Life's been rapidly changing ever since the virtual experience called META usurped the internet.

Nearly everything that's published online has META involvement somehow.

Digital property ownership is at an all time high in the form of NFTs.

What META failed to take into account was the rise of Digital Monsters. They organically rose from the chaff of the META infrastructure and these Digital Monsters have the ability to change META, beyond what is intended by the system.

You've got a chance to obtain one of these Digital Monsters after wallowing in the dark underbelly of the METAverse.

You gotta pick one.

You decide to pick the red one because fire monsters are cool and you're the raddest dude around.

You were going to kick the blue one for looking like a little faggot before the shop owner stares you down, telling you not to damage the merchandise.

Well, no harm done. You've got enough food NFTs to feed your monster for a month, so you better get to training it so it becomes useful enough to start hunting for food.

Your Digital Monster's attacking dice is:
1) Body Hit
2) Body Hit
3) Body Hit
4) Body Hit
5) Bubble Blow
6) Bubble Blow

And its defensive dice is:
1) Brace
2) Brace
3) Brace
4) Dodge
5) Dodge
6) Dodge

Both dice are pretty average for a baby Digital Monster, with a slight lean towards a physical attacker. This will change with time as your Digital Monster learns new moves.

You could only afford food for your Digital Monster for a month before you have to start hunting. What stat do you wanna focus on?

Power (Increases effectiveness of Power type moves)
Magic (Increases effectiveness of Ranged type moves)
Skill (Increases effectiveness of Dexterity type moves)
Speed (Increases effectiveness of Speed type moves)

Currently, the Skill stat is useless to you since your monster doesn't know any Dexterity moves.

You've also got an e-mail from one of your nerdy friends asking you if you got META shanked from following the shady hyperlink that gave you your Digital Monster

You follow the online instructions and train your Digital Monster's power. You'd be a fool not to, given that your Digital monster uses it for both attack and defense and you don't really know enough about Digital Monsters to try a janky build.

You decide to ask your nerdy friend if there are any more scams that you should know about. After all, one of the shady links he sent you led you to getting a Digital Monster of your own.

"Well, if you actually clicked that link, I've got a nigerian prince I'd like to introduce you to."

Your friend's avatar is a bit glitchy probably due to your shoddy connection. However you can feel the sarcasm in his online voice, and tell him to cut it out.

You punch him in the shoulder for good measure, but the gesture is a bit empty given that you two aren't in meatspace.

In a fit of devilish cunning uncharacteristic of you, you decide to tell him that you got a blue Digital Monster. You attempt some reverse psychology and try to get him to adopt a green one.

"Holy shit! You actually got one? Sorry but I don't mess with that dark META shit. Don't go around telling people you have one of those things. You'll get your account zucced."

After that, your friend didn't really seem into the conversation and was in a hurry to log out.

Your conversations with him after that were relatively short and you get the feeling he's trying to avoid talking to you.

Because you're a loser, you don't really have many friends so it kind of sucks that one of the few you have is avoiding you.

After about a month of training, your Digital Monster has reached his first evolutionary milestone.

He doesn't really look that different other than gaininh a pair of stony arms.

He's ready to take on the world and acquire digital property for you! However since you're a newbie, you only have access to the shallow parts of the dark META.

You'll have to pick where to enter from.

Although Pollution Town and Slimworld are by far the most common entryways into the dark META, you decide to access it by way of Gear Valley.

The security is a little harder to breach, but you feel Slimworld would be too easy and Pollution Town would be too hard to navigate because of all the Poison-type Digital monsters.

As it is, you manage to glitch through a wall in the Cryptocoin Mining district. Security was a little tight due to holding most of META's economy, but it was nothing that a plucky young hacker like youraelf couldn't avoid.

Now that you're firmly in the dark META, you feel safe enough to materialize your Digital Monster.

Gear Valley is a pretty large area with three different sub-areas to explore, although they head deeper within the dark META.

Given that you didn't go through Slimworld, you decide against probing the deeper parts of Gear Valley for now and search the shallower areas for scraps.

While you were busy trying to find something useful, a Digital Monster attacks you. It looks like a security program that clipped through the Gear Valley entrance and mutated.

What do you do?

Since you didn't want your exploration to be for nothing, you decide to fight the metal slim.

Your Digital Monster opens with a Bubble Blow, distracting the opponent. The opposing Digital Monster charges through the bubbles only to find that its attacks do absolutely no damage to your Digital Monster.

You're pretty surprised, but then again, it's just a slim.

Your Digital Monster exchanges a few attacks with the metal slim before the metal slim dissipates into a chunk of cryptocurrency.

The Cryptocurrency chunk can't actually be spent unless it's refined by a mining rig, but there are people who buy them for cheap so they can refine them for a profit. You're pretty sure Digital Monsters can eat them too

Your Digital Monster is trying to learn a move:
3) Body Hit (P) -> Focus Shot (D)

Allow it?
>Yes
>No

After every battle, your Digital Monster will try to learn a random move. Most of the time they try to learn something of their own level. It's up to you to make sure your Digital Monster learns moves appropriate to its build.

In this case, it's trying to replace the Power type move "Body hit" with a Dexterity type move "Focus Shot"

What do you do?
>keep searching for stuff in the current dark META layer
>Head deeper. The enemies here don't give you enough of a challenge

You decide to keep searching in the shallows of Gear Valley. While deeper in the valley contains more interesting treasures, you aren't tempted because you don't want to prematurely end your Digital Monster journey.

After rummaging around, you find another chunk of unrefined Cryptocurrency.

You can keep searching, but you're pretty sure the inhabitants have been alerted to yout presence and you're unlikely to find anything more interesting than unrefined Cryptocurrency.

You decide to keep searching in the shallows, since your Digital Monster is still a slim.

After about one more hour of searching, all you get is another Cryptocurrency chunk. With three in your inventory, it's about all you can carry so you prepare to leave.

On your way back to the Cryptocurrency Mining sector, you run into a pink-haired girl who's talking to her Digital Monster.

Unlike yours, the Digital Monster is no longer a slim. She seems surprised to see you.

"Whoah. Are you a newbie? You don't normally see people take slims to the dark META. What, are you poor or something?"

The girl was a little shrill. And did she really have to call you poor? I mean, you are, but that doesn't mean it needed to be pointed out.

"Hmm, I don't give money to newbies or anything. I'll give you my contact details, though. Here's one of my burner accounts. You can contact me there if you need advice or something."

She hands you some contact info with an obviously fake name. Still, it would be a shame if you alienated the first acquaintance you made on the dark META, so you add her.

You have 3 Cryptocurrency Chunks in your inventory. You can have them refined into cryptocurrency, but the refiner will likely take a cut. Alternatively, you can feed it to your Digital Monster in irder to fuel their training.

(Different foods have different effects. In this case, Cryptocurrency chunks aren't that good of a food, so they will increase a random stat and decrease a random stat. However, Cryptocurrency Chunks cannot reduce a stat below 1, so there's a decent chance at getting free stats while you still have 1s in your stats.)

What do you do?

You decide to feed all of the Cryptocurrency Chunks to your slim.

The combination of food and constant training bumps up his Power and Magic, while leaving his other stats alone. This is an incredibly lucky result for just using Crypto Chunks for food. You probably shouldn't expect such good results from using Crypto Chunks every time.

However, at the end of the month, you are now out of food for your Digital Monster. With how strong it is, you feel like it would be a good idea to start diving deeper into the dark META.

Where do you enter the dark META from?

With your familiarity with Gear Valley, the choice on where to find food for your Digital Monster was easy.

As the backends of abandoned cryptocurrency refineries continue to drag into the ground, you get an alert that Kawaii Princess is in the area. You don't see her immediately, so she's probably deeper in.

What do you do?
>Search in the shallows like before. (Loot includes crypto chunks. Enemies are mostly Machine slims)
>Head deeper and see if you can meet up with Kawaii princess (Monsters will be stronger, but you'll have Kawaii Princess by your side. You won't get to learn good techniques)

If it was a genuine mistake, just continue the story as if that vote was never there, and be more careful in the future. Another idea is to wait at most 20 minutes after the last vote was given out, or wait until one of the choices got at least 3 votes. Update the thread frequently too.

You start filling your Inventory with Crypto Chunks. The unrefined digital crystals sit heavy in your inventory, but along the way, a Machine slim attacks you, furious that you've infringed on its territory.

Your Digital monster makes quick work of it, moreso now that it's on the cusp of evolution and the slim is just... a slim.

Your Digital monster is trying to learn a technique

4) Body Hit -> Body Hit +

Allow it?
>Yes

However, your Inventory is currently full and you'll have to discard some of what's in your inventory to store more

While you were mulling over your options, a young blue-haired avatar takes a seat on a pile of discarded gears. You think to yourself that it can't possibly be comfortable before you remember that he's an avatar in virtual space. He's probably sitting on a comfy couch IRL.

With him is a blue and yellow Digital Monster. It seems weaker than Kawaii Princess's, but still stronger than your own.

Despite your life being fairly easy, the temptation to go deeper and find NFT treasures hidden deeper inside the dark META weighs heavily on your mind.

However, before you go deeper you decide to make friends with the blue guy.

"Hey, my dude. Smelling the roses?"

You're a little confused since VR goggles don't actually transmit smell. And then you hear the sound of him inhaling from a bong coming from his mic.

"Oh, umm. No thanks. I don't do drugs. I just wanted to ask you what's up."

"Nahh man, I don't do drugs either. Just smoking a sweet bowl of weed. It's all natural, man. I got some of the high quality stuff so HMU if you ever decide to smoke a bowl."

He hands you his under META account info, RealLeaf420, before he goes back to spacing out on his pile of broken gears.

Sensing that you can't get any more info out of him while he's that off his rocker, you head deeper into the under META.

You take quick stock of your surroundings. It doesn't seem that different from the shallows, but you're not really THAT deep.

Traceries of silver colored plants grow in cracks in the abandoned cryptominer software.

Unfortunately, you don't get much of a chance to think as you're attacked by a Digital Monster.

The opposing Digital Monster is fast and tries to collide with yours while emitting a pronounced "SSSS"

Your Digital Monster tanks the attack and flings away the attacker only for the attacker to self detonate.

This doesn't destroy the attacker though as few things in cyberspace make sense. Your Monster retaliates and charges the creature, pummelling it with its stony arms. It's a direct hit and glowing cyan cracks spread across the metal slim's wireframe.

It tries to attack again, but your monster does the same deflecting move it did the first time, immediately following up with a fierce straight punch.

Silver metal flakes off the slim's skin, revealing its Digital core. A punch directly to its innards vanquishes it.

Your Digital Monster did surprisingly well. It seems that all your trepidation about delving deeper into the dark META was for naught as your Digital Monster was still doing decently well.

On the other hand, Kawaii princess was deeper still. Just how strong is her Digital Monster?

Your Digital Monster is trying to learn a technique:

2) Brace (Power) -> Dodge (Speed)

On top of that, you scavenge a Metal Casing from the Metal Slim's body.

>Discard Crypto chunk for Metal Casing
>Discard Metal Casing

(Metal Casing increases power by 1 up to a max of 5. It also changes one defensive move to "Metal Coat", a Machine Attribute Magic type defensive move. Metal Casing can be crafted with a Creeper Heart to make a bomb. There may be more uses for Metal Casing that you don't know about.)

You decide not to interfere with the guy's fight since he seems to know what he's doing. You can't help watching him for a bit, though since his Digital Monsters are so cool in action.

After absconding, your treasures get placed into your crypto wallet and look up the price of Metal Casings. As it turns out, they're common enough that you won't get a good price for them. You'd make more money getting crypto chunks refined for you.

However, there are a bunch of uses for them. Too bad you'd need your own Crypto Refinery to turn Metal Casings into more useful items. Having them refined for you is going to cost a bunch of crypto that you don't have, so it's better to hodl them, unless you were going to feed them to your Digital Monster.

Inventory:
Crypto Chunk (Can be refined for crypto. +1 to random stat, -1 to random stat)
2 Metal Casing (Power +1 up to a maximum of 5. Changes 1 defensive move to Metal Coat. Used in a bunch of recipes for higher tiered items)

>Feed Digital Monster (Select item)

You also get a DM from Kawaii Princess. Looks like she DMed her entire friends list. She'll be having a public fight in Gear Valley and will be handing out free NFTs to people who cheer her on. 20 lucky guests can also meet her personally after the fight.

You don't really have anything to lose other than time.

You feed one of the metal casings to your Digital Monster and then get to training. Once your monster finishes training, it evolves to its next stage.

Your Digital Monster will now start learning elemental attacks.

Feeling confident now that your Digital Monster is no longer a slim, you attend Kawaii Princess's event. Most of the people here don't seem to have Digital Monsters with them.

About half of the people in the link Kawaii Princess sent you is cheering for someone called xGothxKissx, presumably Kawaii Princess's opponent.

An absolutely devilish thought comes to you as the participants introduce themselves. You command your Digital Monster to hack the firewall that separates the participants from the audience and declare a fight against the two online divas.

the crowd falls silent for a moment before erupting into murmurs, then loud jeers. One of the nerds watching calls you an autistic retard, demanding you get off the stage.

But it's too late now and war has been declared. You don't let Kawaii Princess and xGothxKissx get their defenses up before your Digital Monster tackles the goth diva's demonic monster. It summons up a magical flame barrier in response and deflects your Digital Monster's attack.

From your blind side, Kawaii Princess' Digital Monster lets loose a pink aura-empowered punch. Your Digital Monster braces itself for impact, but finds that the force of the punch is greater than its legs can withstand. It is sent flying towards the barrier, but not before xGothxKissx's Digital Monster can loose its own attack.

A magical circle forms in front of the demonic Digital Monster and fires at yours, adding force to Kawaii Princess's attack.

Your Digital Monster hits the barrier with a sickening crunch and it flashes a bit as it tries to withstand the speed your Digital Monster collided with it.

As your Digital Monster struggles to get up, it fires bubbles from its mouth in an attempt to muster some kind of ranged attack. However, the bubbles pop harmlessly against xGothxKissx's flame barrier.

A final attack from Kawaii Princess cements your loss as her cat Digital Monster's aura-empowered kick forcefully reverts your Digital Monster into its NFT form.

xGothxKissx sneers at you.

"You're about a hundred years too early to challenge me," She says as she sweeps a hand through her hair, making it flutter.

You were expecting a similar rebuke from Kawaii Princess, but instead she winks at you and makes a heart shape with her hands.

"That was a good fight," she says. Although it feels rather empty given that she curb stomped your Digital Monster. "Keep training and there's nothing the power of your friendship with your Digital Monster can't overcome"

Security droids drag you out of the arena and you have no choice but to let them, since your Digital Monster is in NFT form.

Your Digital Monster is trying to learn a move:
1) Brace (Non-Elemental, Power), Sparkle Skate (Light-Elemental, Speed)

How elemental defense moves work:
Elemental Defense moves are treated as if your stat is 20% higher if the opposing move is the same element as, or weak to the element of the defense move. However, if you are hit with an elemental move that is stronger than your move's element, your defending stat is treated as if it's 20% Weaker.

>Learn Sparkle Skate
>Don't learn Sparkle Skate

Now that you've experienced your first loss, the urge to train your Digital Monster is even stronger. What do you do?

You feed your Digital Monster a Metal Casing. Because its Power is already at the maximum of 5, Metal Casing couldn't raise its power. However, Metal Casing still gives your Digital Monster the move Metal Coat (Machine, Magic).

Your research says that Machine is strong against Lightning and Light, but weak against Water, Fire and Nature.

After feeding your Digital Monster, you start scavenging in Gear Valley.

You decide to further your exploration into gear valley. Having been exploring it for several months in a row, you feel pretty confident in navigating its twists and turns.

As you go deeper, it becomes less "valley" and a little more "gear".

Even the occasional tree has been taken over by primitive crypto miners, turning them into what looks like a techno-organic modern art piece.

Your first attempt at scavenging leads to you finding another Metal Casing, however you get the feeling that you can find more precious materials if you keep searching in this area.

This deep in the valley, Slims have gotten rarer and rarer. They're replaced by the explosive Creepers, unstable masses of data that autodetonate at the slightest provocation.

Your explorations lead to you finding a Laser Bit

(10 Laser Bits can be refined into a Laser Module. Feeding a Laser Bit to a Digital Monster raises its Magic by 1, up to a maximum of 5 and replaces one of its attack moves with Autodetonate (Machine Type, Power))

You were considering looking for more items until you hear the familiar sounds of fighting.

Since the black guy has two Digital Monsters, your stoner friend is outnumbered. Unlike Kawaii Princess, RealLeaf420's Digital Monster isn't freakishly strong for a child level so being outnumbered works against him.

The PKer hasn't noticed you yet, so you bide your time and wait for an opening to attack. Your Digital Monster is itching for a fight too-- you can tell by the way it's charging up digital energy.

Eventually, you're unable to hold your Digital Monster back any longer and it unleashes a torrent of bubbles against the gun-shaped Digital Monster.

The PKer was caught totally unaware as the bubble attack clogs the barrel of his gun Digital Monster. It tries desperately to fire, but only succeeds in burning off the bubbles.

"Yo, what's the big deal, man? I'm trying to PK here. Why you gotta be a douche?" Says the black guy.

"Like, whoah dude. You totally, like, saved my skin there," says RealLeaf420.

"I got two Digital Monsters anyway, so I can take both of you," the PKer boasts.

You're up against the gun while the sword battles with RealLeaf420's Digital Monster.

The gun was quick to regain the initiative after burning off the bubbles with its laser attacks. Your Digital Monster tries to dodge, but the gun's laser attacks were simply too fast to avoid.

Laser beams quickly fill the field, slowly boxing your Digital Monster in as they reflect off the metallic structures littered about.

Thankfully, even without commanding it, your Digital Monster has the wits to slowly approach the gun and tackle it to the ground.

Belatedly, the gun tries to activate some kind of shield move, but does so too late to protect itself from hitting the ground. It looks a little beat up, floating a little lower to the ground with its barrel drooping.

Meanwhile, RealLeaf's battle with the sword Digital Monster was at a standstill. Without the advantage of numbers, the sword and the dog were too evenly matched for there to be a clear winner. There's an opportunity here, but it's risky.

You decide to ignore RealLeaf's fight for now. It's foolish to think about someone else's battle when there's an enemy right in front of you after all.

Your Digital Monster continues to throw itself bodily towards the gun, making sure that it can't fill the field with its dangerous laser bullets.

As it does so, the Plus-Aura envelops your Digital Monster, ensuring a critical hit.

In its disoriented state, your Digital Monster easily manages to trick the gun into shooting its ally before he shatters the glass lens that acts as the Digital Monster's eye.

The gun-like Digital Monster is reduced to an NFT, but the browser extension that your Digital Monster came with quickly funges it, supplying you with a copy.

(Your Digital Monster is trying to learn a move)
5) Dodge (Null, Speed) -> Flame Booster (Fire, Speed)

RealLeaf420 finishes his fight soon after and the sword Digital Monster is also reduced to an NFT

The black guy clicks his tongue annoyed and uses a hack to log out directly with the remains of his Digital Monsters in tow.

"Hey, thanks for helping me out man. If you ever want a discount on weed, just give me a DM."

You feed your Digital Monster the Machine Casing. This doesn't do anything for its stats, but it does change one of its defensive moves to Metal Coat.

You guess that's better than wasting it.

You manage to escape with a Laser Bit, a Creeper Heart and the MachineGun NFT.

(Laser Bit Raises Magic by 1, up to 5 and teaches the offensive move Autodetonate (Machine,Power))
(Creeper Heart increases Power by 1, up to 7 for Machine monsters and up to 5 for other monsters and teaches the offensive move Autodetonate (Machine, Power))
(The MachineGun NFT increases Magic by 3, up to a maximum of 10, and teaches the defensive move Neon Accelerator (Machine, Speed))

The MachineGun NFT can be sold on the market for 50 Crypto.

>Select item to feed Digital Monster
>Sell MachineGun NFT
>Do nothing

While you were doing market research, you research on how to refine items. Apparently, all you need is a GPU, the same thing used to refine crypto. GPUs cost 500 Crypto on average, but you can have items refined by a miner for anywhere from 20 to 50 Crypto.

While you were doing your research, you get another message from Kawaii Princess, talking about another event for her 'fans'. It doesn't seem like she remembered to take you off her mailing list after your stunt at her last event. It looks like her opponet this time is some chick named SweeTButtercuP. The opportunity for trolling the vtuber simps is ripe.

However, you're given more to think about when RealLeaf420 asks if you want to make some quick Crypto by doing a meatspace delivery for him. Since it's a meatspace job, the pay is a little high at 100 crypto and carries no risk to your Digital Monster. Also, weed is legal so there's no risk to you. However it seems a little odd that RealLeaf420 knows your location, and doing this job means you lose the opportunity to trash Kawaii Princess's event.

>Crash Kawaii Princess's event
>Do RealLeaf420's job
