You are a little Sea Slug, crawling around in tropical waters and eating whatever it is that Sea Slugs eat. But today, all of that is about to change...

>Select your Sea Slug. Find an image of one, and vote for the type of slug you want to be.

First update will be in a day or so.

Dirona albolineata, aka the Alabaster Nudibranch, is translucent white, mauve, greenish or peach with opalescent white outlining the broad, flat cerata, oral veil and the midline of the tail. to defend itself, it readily sheds its large flat cerata which, like a lizard's tail, distracts predators. Chemical defences are also likely, but their nature remains unknown.

Alright! Got home, booted up paint, let's do this! Quick post just to start it off.

You are an Alabaster Nudibranch, also known as Dirona Albolineata! Of course, you know neither of these terms. All you know is eating and wandering. Slugs aren't very bright. But this thing in front of you? Now, that's bright. You're not quite sure what this glowing orb is, but hey, you never know if it's food until you try putting it in your mouth.

WOAH!

Mote Of Awareness Consumed.

You feel the food disperse into your body. And all of a sudden, you're hyperaware of your surroundings. You're in a sandy basin, with several other Slugs grazing in the area. None of your kind, though. Plenty of organic detritus lines the basin. It takes you a bit to acclimate to your new awareness, and process everything. But when you do, you hear something yelling at you.

"Oh, confound it all! I've been working towards that for HOURS. You hear me?! Hours! And you damnable Sea Slugs swoop in with your superior speed, and claim it in just minutes! Curse you, youngling! You can hear me now, yes? Let it be known that I'm cursing you! I curse you!"

Two votes for:

>fear the curse and apologize profusely to the god being

You immediately begin blubbering and begging, apologising to whatever divine being that's trying to smite you. The first emotion you're feeling, as a now-sapient Sea Creature, is fear.

After almost a full minute of this, the voice speaks up again. You realise that it's not coming from high above, but rather, right in front of you! The shell opens up slightly to speak.

"Oh... Well... Alright then, alright then! You really know how to make an old codger feel bad, young'un. I take it back."

It wiggles slightly.

You leave Ol' Salty behind for now, and slither over to the Bodacious slug Babe. I think I kinda fucked up and drew it based off a sculpture, and not a real species... So let's just call it the Teal Slug!

The Teal beauty is grazing at the base of a coral. It's sucking up sand. You slick back your cerata, trying to be as slick as possible, as you say hi to the Teal slug.

You resist the primal urge to start crawling onto this slug and attempting to mate. You know that it's dangerous to do it when the other party isn't receptive. No, she's just vacuuming up the rest of the delicious, nutritious detritus to make sure you don't snatch it up. Damn it!

You're mad. That's a new emotion! Sea Slugs don't tend to get mad. At most, they get territorial. But you feel a new emotion at being spurned. To rid yourself of the feeling, you start biting on coral, scraping the scarlet polyp with your radula. As you rub away at it with your mouthparts, you realise something... That Mote of Awareness that you swallowed was what gave you life. If you can get another one, you can turn this dumb vegetative slug into another thinking being like yourself! Then you can get it on, and have hot, slippery, flesh-slapping SeaSlex (Sea Slug Sex) with their SeaSussy (Sea- you get the point).

Since they're votes for 1 course of action, I'm not gonna count that as 3 separate -1s.

Still trying to figure out voting, so that I don't end up ruining the intended comfiness of the quest but what would you guys think of a system like Twitch Plays Pokemon? Where there's 'modes' of voting that can be swapped between depending on situations. Like a 'everything goes' mode, for when in a spot that nothing matters, a +1 and -1 system, full single-course-of-action democracy that can be swapped to if in a conversation, etc. I'd love suggestions in general, quite lost in that regard.

You express your joy at finding an intelligent slug. Base thoughts run through your head, like immediately trying to mate with this creature. But something tells you not to jump on that wagon quite yet. You hesitate as well, on asking about that term she mentioned. Ferals, was it? Instead, you philosophise for a moment on the nature of Sea Slug life, and then ask if she'd like you join your PARTY.

"Oh! Actually... I was looking for somebody who could help me. I would come along with this 'party', but... I am afraid I would not be of much use. I am infirm."

Just then, you realise that this babe doesn't have any fucking rhinophores. Holy shit. The front of her head is flat and smooth, and she lacks the antenna that every Sea Slug uses to sense things with. It's bizarre that she's managed to survive with such a critical disability.

Alrighty. So, in the interest of un-fucking some of the damage I've done to this Quest with my indecisiveness, I'm going to introduce a system! This will be the Anchor post for it, so please refer to this in the future when trying to figure out what this means.

Along with each vote, you may vote to change the VOTING MODE that we're currently using for the quest. To prevent samefagging for this aspect, I'll only accept votes to change modes from IDs who have been posting in the thread for a little while. If a large number of people vote to change the voting mode, it comes into effect immediately and I'll use that voting mode when processing the turn.

>Tally- (Siloë)
Mode 1, Tally, will be the style we're using right now. I'll process all votes that have a positive number of votes. In this mode, you may give -1s to actions that you particularly disagree with. This allows you to eliminate options. It's a system of mass-disagreement.

>Anarchy- (L???)
Mode 2, Anarchy, turns our little Slug into a schizo, just like how his second name keeps changing. I will accept ALL votes that are reasonable. Doing something dumb or incredibly unwise, yet still within the realm of possibility still counts as 'reasonable'. A vote like 'Commit slug suicide and end the quest' is not considered reasonable. As I'll accept anything if this mode is voted for, this mode will certainly result in a lot of randomness and unpredictability, as well as major swings in character behaviour. It's best for low-stake situations. It's a system of anarchy, of course, it's in the name.

>Popularity- (Urinor)
Mode 3. No -1s in this mode. However, I will accept and process votes that have multiple people calling for them. If only a single person proposes a course of action, and can get no agreement from others, it won't be taken. In this mode, I'll have to use my own judgement at times, and acceptance will probably vary from post to post, depending on the amount of people present who are voting for things. So for example, if two actions get three votes each, a third action with one vote won't be chosen. If there's two actions that somehow get 15 players each voting for them, a third action with 4 or something people won't be chosen. It's a system of mass-agreement.

>Election- (Gabroch)
Mode 4. Rather boring, but extremely safe. This is best for high-stakes situations, like a negotiation, or a bomb defusal where the exact right action is crucial. In Election mode, I will only process a single vote, with the highest amount of approval from people. +1s are very necessary here, to make your prime option count. It's a system of majority-agreement.

We're currently in Tally Mode. I can't say I approve of the revenge -1s very much, but in that case, it's up to neutral parties to add their +1s in agreement, like >>5239127.

That said, it's time for the:

>WRITE-IN!

You're overthinking it dude. Just do what most quest do and pick the choice that's most popular. Feel free to add or reject any write-ins or extra suggestions, and if they're too questionable then you may subject them to popular vote in addition to the option that was already picked by most.
>>

Consider removing the -1 system altogether. Feel free to add write ins or suggestions as you see them fit, you're the QM after all. If people really disagree with an approach proposed by one anon they're usually going to voice that, and then you may think twice about adding it in the update.
>>
>>5239192

>Ask about life circumstances of crippled babe slug; and how we can help

You decide to ask Kuni about what happened to her.

"I don't exactly recall. Our kind recover from wounds fast, but nothing has ever grown back. So it must have been a remnant from birth. I doubt that I would have survived long, but... I've been aware for a long time. Longer than most, I suppose. I only know that I first ate one of those Motes of Consciousness, when I was small. And since then, I've been conscious of the world around me. Even when devoid of smell, or taste."

Come to think of it, you haven't had to rely wholly on your antennae since eating the object. You've been able to perceive the whole portion of the basin that you were in. You continue on, and ask about how you can help.

"I've been evicted, you see. From a Sponge that was once my home. It's just over to the West. A group of ruffians, and a group of Ferals both, have started squabbling over who rightfully owns it. I cannot take on them alone. Until you came along, reclaiming it was just a distant dream."

You segue into your series of questions. There's two ferals, being controlled by a thinking member of their own kind. They're a rather common slug, she says. The Hypselodoris Bullocki, a Purple Sea Slug. The two ruffians fighting are Teal Sea Slugs, the same as the one you tried to flirt with. So five, total, against two of you. They're due West, she says.

You explain to her that you're going to catch these little creatures, place them into a leaf packet, and then fling them at the enemy, whereupon they'll burst out and pinch them with their tiny claws.

To demonstrate, you launch a Cerata arrow at the plant! It stabs through the wood easily. However, you realise that these don't come in infinite supply. The arrow was one of the physical cerata that you have on your back. It's definitely a good weapon, though. How many slugs can say that they have the ability to strike from afar?! In fact, how many sea creatures in general?

>construct a leaf bag and put the balls in it

You make another leaf tube by folding the plant up. You stick the balls in there, though you're not sure how useful they'll end up being.

You pop open your secret weapon and fling them at the two closest, who were about to dive down on you. The crabs burst out, and, frustrated from their time spent in the tube, immediately lash out with their tiny claws. They're not strong enough to do any real harm to a Sea Slug, but they're a hell of a lot better at distracting them than a ball of chewed kelp. Both of them are occupied for now.

You float the idea of a truce to him, where you'll help him look for motes for his buddies. Ol' Salty did say they float from the surface, so going higher might net you more motes. Your companion turns towards you, looking rather put-off by the compromise, but she stays silent to let you continue negotiating.

"You must be pretty new here. There's not much in the way of unoccupied spaces. Back before Sea Slugs and other creatures started eating motes, things were normal. At least, I'm sure of it. Everyone kept to the places that could sustain them. But then..."

He turns towards the yellow slug in your party, and wiggles his antennae spitefully.

"Slugs like these started moving where they shouldn't, and denying the spots to others."

That gets her speaking.

"Hey! Why should I have to give up MY home, that I've been in for ages, just because someone 'needs it'? If someone 'needed' to eat you, you'd just let them do it? Your little friends aren't owed it just because it's there."

((Due to the nature of this vote, I can only pick the top option, rather than trying everything))

You thank Ol' Salty and head further up. Hey, there's a familiar face! The feral you first met is up here now, foraging in the dirt for detritus. Up North, the looming forest casts a shadow over the seabed. Slugs are milling about by the entrance. Kuni and your purple companion follow close behind.

"I've never been into the Grove. I came from the east. Not sure what we'll find in there..."

Kuni glances at the two slugs by the kelp.

"I came here once, but didn't go all the way in. Those types of slug are native, we'll probably meet a lot of them inside."

You get the purple guy to hide in the coral, in case you need him to throw out the element of surprise and overpower the natives. You also head over to the feral Teal who you've had your eyes on. The slug seems plenty intimidated already, by the death of his brother. It seems like they expected to fend the two of you off easily, but the third attacker, as well as your arrows, have completely turned the tide. He's no longer in a position to keep you three out.

You charge in behind him and behold the grove proper. Huge towers of Seaweed take up the landscape, and you can spot dozens of little crustaceans clambering across the stalks. Up ahead, a knot of vines block off the path, and there are split bodies scattered all around. The Nembrother calls for help, and the two additional guards take notice.

"Yeah, keep em distracted..." you mutter, as your squad slides Westwards. You see an opening there, and you can probably get to it before the others reach you. You start yelling something to them about being here to fight Slugsquisher, and how this is a misunderstanding. But the fleeing slug simply shouts:

Eh, fuck it. That was never gonna work with one screaming, fleeing enemy. You get your two allies to stand in front of you, since you're the only one who can provide backline support- albeit limited. You blast off another Cerata arrow at them! You make sure Bull is up front, and in the most danger, in case you have to exploit that later on. You still don't completely trust him.

>Kuni and Bull gang up on closest nembrother while we shoot him

You repeat your tactic. The two of them strike the slug, and both slugs hit Bull in turn. You shoot one with the last of your arrows!

Kuni- 9/10 hp
Bull- 7/10

Nembrother 3- 4/10 hp
Nembrother 4- 10/10 hp

If this Nembrother has that same healing, then it'll definitely be procced when it's struck again. You're out of means to kill them before they can get it off. Bull continues taking the hits, as you commanded.

"Hey... Boss. Can we switch over soon? Or me and the broad? Not a fan of getting hit this much!"

"What did you just call me?"

"Nothin!"

You look over the battlefield. It seems like, in general, the basics of Slug Combat are being made clear to you. Pretty much every slug is evenly matched, so a fight will often be decided by numbers alone. No wonder they always seem to wander about in groups. This druid team would easily be able to repel any slug band or ferals, with their healing and numbers. But all it takes is one slug with a special ability (like yours) to change the situation significantly. You wonder how rare it is, and how many others are like you.

But enough exposition! The battle awaits.

You reassure the purple slug that it's strategic, and you'll swap over when he's no longer the toughest. The three of you continue to pound on the Nembrother.

Like before, the brilliant green shield activates! He's restored to a state where you have to beat him up again.

Nembrother 3- 4/10 hp

>Proceed letting bull on front line while we try to sneak attack the wounded slug

You attempt to go around and sneak-attack them, but they've already been made aware of your presence, and you have no ability to go into stealth mode.

Smack smack.

Kuni- 9/10 hp
Bull- 3/10

Nembrother 3- 1/10 hp
Nembrother 4- 10/10 hp

The strategy of smacking them is working rather well. You'll all be pretty badly hurt at the end of it, but you're going to end up taking these guys down permanently. You start chewing on the fruits, intent on eating your fill and resting. To your surprise and disgust, they're filled with air! As soon as you bite through the skin, you find absolutely nothing. This is terrible! What the heck is wrong with this grove?!

Fortunately, there's plenty of those scuttling crabs around. You can choose whether you eat them or not.

You contemplate splatting Bull. It's a good opportunity to get rid of him, especially since he doesn't line up with your goals. However, you finally decide not to. You need the muscle right now, with a fight coming up. Same deal with Kuni. You're not sure whether you want to stick with her in the long term, and the thought of betrayal lingers in your mind.

For now, they're useful.

As you rest, you see the both of them trying to get your attention. You could pick one to talk to, or just sit by yourself and relax. Maybe eat some crabs, maybe not.

You gather up some crabs and munch on them while approaching Bull. You've got the least time with him, you think, giving a conspirational wink towards the camera. Might as well see what he has to say.

"Hey, boss... Never quite caught your second name. What was it?"

>"It's Larry."

"Riiight. I thought it was Louie."

>"Nope. It was Leon."

"What? But you just said Larry."

>"Lacrosse."

"Look. Okay, nevermind. Just wanted to say... Things have been going pretty swell, with you in charge. Didn't know Slugs could do things like that, or shoot arrows. How do you do it?"

>You briefly explain how you have a count of arrows, and how you can keep track of these things.

"That's... Bizarre. I don't see any of this stuff you're describing. And you say you ate a Mote, just like us?"

>"A Mote of Awareness, yep."

"You mean Consciousness?"

>"No?"

"... Odd."

The purple slug chalks it up to Siloe's eccentricity, and carries on.

"Well. I just wanted to say... Thanks for taking me along on this quest. Hopefully my brothers are doing alright, on the sponge."

You decide to take this chance and ask him all about the food situation, and the conflict between him and Kuni. At this point, you think the entire thing is stupid as fuck, and they're both colossal dumbasses and dickheads for fighting over such a thing. With a sigh, the slug elaborates further.

"I guess you don't know this. But us Sea Slugs? We're picky eaters, to an insane degree. You could put a slug in front of a damn buffet. Crabs, detritus, algae pellets. Sea fruits, a dead clam, a split-open prawn. Bits of coral, another tasty slug... Anything you can imagine. A whole spread. And you know what? It won't lift its head and eat, if there isn't one specific sponge from some backwater part of the ocean, on a platter."

>"Wow, ferals are retarded."

"It's just how our entire race is, boss. You were no exception, not counting the mote. Okay yeah, I guess those are the exception."

Bull pauses to adjust himself in the sand, helping his lardy purple ass to a few of the crabs.

"And it worked out. Because the ocean is huge. With all these different kinds of slugs, everything was a food source for something different. Slugs ate what they were supposed to, and left everything else for the people who would actually finish it. And then the motes started raining down."

You look over at him, observing how he chows down on crabs with relish. Yeah, you three have had no trouble eating whatever you could find. And you've been able to digest it just fine.

"With all these sentients realising they could eat anything, they diversified. You, me, and the yellow bitch? It's not like we're going to starve to death because the sponge curled up and died. We can go around eating whatever. But the Ferals still stick to their guns. Even if I can order them around, they refuse to eat anything outside of their species' diet. Which is why we were so set on the sponge. We travelled all the way from the West, past the SANDCASTLE. My lads were starving to death. So we turned away the two Teal ruffians who were snatching it in the first place, and I let them graze on that springy yellow delight."

You take a bite of the body while Bull tells you his story. It tastes... Pretty alright! Kinda bitter at times, because almost all slugs are at least a bit poisonous, but they taste healthy. You don't get any sort of special abilities from doing that, however. It's just decent quality food.

You decide to negotiate with it, rather than try to blast the Druid straight away. You want those motes, and you'll imply that there'll be trouble if they aren't given up.

>"Hello, wise one. We are traveller on a quest to help our fellows. We're looking for 2 motes for Bull's fellow, which will solve in return Kuni's problem. Would you be interested in joining us? Or maybe you could have need for our help regarding the slugsquisher?"

The Druid stares silently at you, his Cerata bristling across his back. The circle of sunlight shines down on him. Before you is a sandy garden, the floor swept in thin arcs and forming circular patterns. Protrusions of stone stick out from the earth, with moss growing atop it. You're in an area that's clear of kelp, and it's brightly lit.

He speaks in a voice that's rather fitting for his cute face, though his words are anything but.

"You killed... How many? Three? Four, of my fellows? I would have been willing to barter for a mote before that. But now, I need it to awaken more fighters. Otherwise, the next time Slugsquisher rises, it'll rampage across the seafloor. Did you consider that, before you murdered my comrades? The only ones standing between a monster, and the rest of Slugkind?"

"Dead Slugs tell no tales. But not one came to me to announce that there were guests for me to consider receiving. I did not teach them to be this foolish. I would not have imparted my skill onto them otherwise. I do not believe, for a moment, that they would be so hasty as to strike first."

"Your ability... I have not seen it. But to defeat that many of them, with two useless companions... It would have to be one that counteracts mine, yes? One that-"

"Hey!"

"What did you just say?"

"-could overcome the healing buff. With that much capacity to dish out harm, you would likely be able to defeat me. But immediately, Slugsquisher would be able to enter the Grove, and you would not stand a chance on your own."

>Wait, who the fuck is this slugsquisher?

You decide to finally ask what the deal with this thing is. Surely a monster can't be that bad.

"Slugsquisher? It's a beast that has plagued the sea for generations. I've held it back several times myself. The Druid who came before me picked me as his protege, and I watched him get sliced apart by it. It's a devilish fiend, whose armour is nigh impossible for Slugs to breach. We can only keep it at bay, and push it back, but none have managed to kill it."

He examines you and your crew.

"You'll go drown it if I hand you the mote, you say? I wonder..."

The Druid begins moving off his sunny patch. He motions to the little cave beneath him.

"I suppose you're right. A single mote can give a single Slug awareness. And there's no guarantee they would have useful abilities. All of my companions were plain Slugs, with nothing of their own. But you? You have two thinking companions already. Come, select one to claim it. A second mote ought to give them strength, and perhaps they'll have something that will be of use against the Slugsquisher."

>Just one? You planned to make AT LEAST 3 more soldiers and expect me to put myself on the line for 1 (ONE) mote?

The Druid bristles angrily. His cerata rise up as he addresses you.

"I have one mote in the first place. That I'm giving to you, despite your indiscretion. Do not test me further. Now, choose who will receive it.

You look towards your two companions. Both of them are staring at the cave, where the mote is likely hidden. You take a moment to make a decision. Bull does seem a bit hesitant. Maybe he doesn't want to take the mote when his own friends need one. Kuni is trying to remain still, but positively bursting with nervous energy. One of them is sure to have higher potential than the other...

>Kuni.

"Me?"

You nod.

"Alright! I won't let you down. Let's see what this second one gives me..."

She slithers towards the cave, and the glint of the mote becomes visible. You stare at the object. Hey, this isn't the one you ate. This is green! But everyone else seems to be pretty nonchalant about it. Bull leans in close to examine it.

"Yup, same ol' same ol. That'll awaken a slug, alright."

Kuni reaches forward to snap it up. Your rationale is that she's blind as fuck, so she'll have so much higher to climb upon eating another mote.

A pale green light pulses through the room. You can see that her XP has all been consumed by itself, but she's gotten a class and a skill! It doesn't sound like anything conventional, though.

"I don't feel any different... Ah, wait! I can see... Trails? Siloe, there's something left behind when you move around."

You're standing still, so you assume she's having some kind of mote-induced schizo episode. You slither over to check on her further.

The Druid clambers down from his perch.

>+1 and ask the druid to come fight slugsquisher with us

You question him on where the beast is, and if he's going to come with you.

"To the East. You ought to have seen a barricade, woven from kelp. That's my other skill. If I die, it'll come undone, and the Slugsquisher will be freed. So do your best to keep me out of harm's way. I'll do the same. I've rested, and you'll have my healing on your side."

Welp, that's done with. You prepare to head off as a group. Suddenly, Kuni perks up and starts moving.

"Ah, wait! Don't go on without me."

You and Bull stare at her again, confused. Like before, you were standing perfectly still. It does spur you into moving, though, and you slither alongside Kuni while heading for the gate. Bull leans in to whisper:

From the sound of it, the Slugsquisher is a crab. So making bombs filled with its kind is probably not a good idea. You dismiss the plan and spend a bit of timing talking to your Party members. Firstly, you talk to everybody at once, and discuss the positioning.

You can't quite decide on a perfect plan. Either Bull or Kuni will be up front. You and the Druid will be giving rear/mid support, but you'll run out of arrows eventually. You'll have to swap with Bull when that happens. You let them know that in battle, you all will probably have to shake things up depending on what happens, but there's at least the outline of a plan.

Then you turn towards Kuni. You let her know your inference, about her being able to see things that haven't happened yet.

"Really? That explains the trails. So, they're the future... Wow, that ability is useful after all!"

Neither of you can figure out what the other one does, though. 'Confluence of Fate', was it?

>ask druid if there is anything here we should take with us
>ask druid the specifics of his healing ability

"There's nothing here that would be of use, no. We kept it held back with numbers. No need for tools. As for my healing: I can grant a blessing onto a Slug, which activates when they're sufficiently injured. It then heals them for a decent amount. I have seven charges of this, on top of my weaving. Since you killed everybody who I had the blessings sitting on... I'm fully stocked."

>can cerata arrows be reused?

They cannot, unfortunately. When you poke at the arrows in the bodies, you find that they're just plain pieces of cerata. They're only useful/special at the time of firing.

>ask druid the size and speed of slugsquisher and anything about its abilities we should know

"It's many times the size and speed of a slug, with armour that stops it from taking any real harm. We've been unable to ever kill it. Usually, if we bother it enough, it retreats. Or clambers back beyond the drop-off. That's the best case scenario, for it won't return for many seasons after."

You ask him to elaborate on its abilities.

"Abilities? Well, we'd better thank our lucky stars that it has none. If it ate a mote, it would be too formidable to be allowed to exist."

>talk to teal slug

Finally, you return to the same slug who's been wandering around. Seems like she made it all the way here, with the Druid's guards dead. The Leafy Sheep slug doesn't look very happy about his Grove being invaded, but he can't do anything about it now.

>"Hey there."

>Evacuate the teal babe. Don't want the babes to get hurt, man.

It's time. You shoo the feral babe away, making sure she's not in the grove. The Druid seals it up to make sure that nobody else wanders in while you're fighting. You all head through the gate...

"Khkhkhkh.... Clk....

The giant monster looms over you. Behind it is a sheer cliff. You pause for a moment, marvelling at the sight of the open ocean. You've never seen the waters stretch out like that before. Instinctively, you know that if you throw yourself off that edge, you're never going to make it back home. Most slugs can't just swim in open water like that.

Multiple spots of light shine from above, and The Druid eyes them up. The crab's attention is on you now, and you have seconds to finalise your plan.

You guys are able to climb and cling onto any physical objects in a map, but the edges of the wall denote the boundaries of the level, that aren't climbable. Physically, there's nothing actually stopping someone from doing it, but it's just gameified/map logic.

You instruct them on your plan. The Druid immediately blesses them. If they hit 3 HP, they'll be healed. However, as you know from your arrow kills, any strike that would result in instant death doesn't activate the blessing.

[Certain sea creatures are nigh impossible for a Sea Slug to physically dominate. These have an armour score, which protects them from the worst hits. They are not killed if they have armour remaining, but can still be defeated and tend to flee.]

Bull tackles it, slamming his purple form into its armour. It doesn't seem particularly perturbed. Kuni weaves in and out of its claws, and you take note of the fact that she's dodging its swings rather well. She's staying just ahead of it, and occupying one of its attacks. She's not able to land a hit, but it can't touch her either. It has two claws, however, and lands a glancing blow on Bull. This thing hits harder than a slug. Your arrow shoots towards its face, and lodges itself at the edge of its soulless black eye. Oh god. This thing has EYES, instead of Rhinophores. Disgusting.

>Shoot an arrow at one of the crab's eyes

Bull is a bit slower than Kuni, who was able to react even before your warning. However, directing them to forgo attacking helps them to avoid the worst of it. It strikes with such force that you see the sand rise up, creating little shockwaves that reverberate through their slimy bodies. It immediately prepares to do another special attack. You're not going to let it get away without harm, though, so you fire at its face again.

>Have the Druid restrict the Crab's legs with Kelp if he can

The Druid shakes his head.

"I cannot make Kelp from nothing. You see the buds popping up? If you can lead it over there, gradually, I'll be able to tangle it. The sunspots are good for me as well, I can rapidly recover in them!"

The two are unable to attack this time, but manage to lead it to the left. It finishes the rave-like dance, and immediately, the crabs in the area leap into a frenzy! Bull has experienced their little claws before, and he's at least picked up on a bit of resistance to it. But you and Kuni are quickly pinched by the savage little beasts. It's impossible to focus when they're all over you like that. The Druid, it seems, has cerata that cover his entire back, so he doesn't suffer from their pinching claws either.

"I can do it now!" the Druid says.

The crab returns to its prior attack patterns for now.

The Druid grows out the kelp, and it wraps around the Slugsquisher's leg in an instant. It's rooted to the spot, and is unable to move, allowing you guys to get further away from it if needed.

Bull stands there to tank the strikes, making sure it doesn't attack the stunned Kuni.

The two swap positions. The Druid picks up on your signal fast, and places a blessing on Bull. The creature has two attacks it can dish out, and Kuni is now attempting to occupy both. She dodges the first one with ease, entirely avoiding the 3 damage. But she receives a glancing blow from the second. You take advantage of it and blast the crab in the eye!

This time, the arrow draws blood. Blue fluid begins leaking into the water, and it recoils for a moment.

You order the Druid to wrap the seaweed around it. However, the plant already looks strained to the limit. The crab has been struggling against it for two rounds already, after all. He tries to keep growing it, but the crab breaks free right at that moment. Seems like you can't exploit each bud infinitely.

Kuni's precognition allows her to dodge the AOE, same as before, at the cost of attacking. Slugsquisher slams down. Bull, who was trying to get around it, takes the brunt of the attack like before.

Seems like you'll be following her plan of dragging this out. The next few moments of battling are tense. You manage to score another strike with your arrows, drawing blood from the crab's other eye. It's now completely blinded, and is thrashing around with reckless abandon. It's easier to avoid its attacks now, as it can't see you, and the constant damage its been doing is decreased by a lot.

Kuni lures it to the bottom weed, while you and the Druid hang back. Bull bravely pummels its eyes, hanging over the edge to do so. Seems like it does extra, and the crab can't actually do any harm to him. It hits Kuni once for reduced damage, but her blessing activates and heals her. You get the Druid to put one on Bull as well.

"Boss! How many more arrows you got?! We need a bit of help. Once they're out, it's gonna go way too slow."

The battle quickly continues for another phase. Kuni dodges one, receives a strike, and returns a blow. Bull goes for the eyes.

Bubbles froth out from the mouth of the beast. It hasn't landed a good clean blow in quite a while, it's fighting an enemy it can't hit, and it has something on its back. You get the feeling it's about to throw a tantrum, or do something even more dangerous...

"Wha- OH! NO! NONONO! SILOE, DON'T SHOOT!"

At some point, the vines snap. You keep battling. All four of you are engrossed in keeping it here as long as you can. The Druid, in particular, seems excited at the prospect of taking down this creature for good and defending his grove.

Tragedy strikes when it summons its crablings to attack. They pinch Bull and manage to dislodge him from its back, allowing the Slugsquisher to seize him and smash him against the ground.

"Boss, come on! Druid, put a damn heal on me! I can't hang in there!"

But you don't relent. If Kuni falls, it was all for nothing. Bull had the poor fortune of being the most expendable. Well, not so much fortune. He didn't get a mote, and you aren't particularly attached to him, even after your little talk. And so, you let him hang in there on his own. Kuni seems a bit worried, and the Druid is apathetic.

"Don't do it! Come on! I need to recover! I feel my insides about to burst out. Boss! BOSS!"

The Druid looks to you for confirmation, and you jerk your antennae in Kuni's direction. She needs it more. The Slugsquisher flies into a frenzy, swinging out at all of you.

>Ask Druid and Kuni how they're feeling

"I'm okay... Wow, that skill is a lot stronger than I expected."

"... I cannot believe you killed it. The Grove will be menaced no more."

The three of you congregate to look at this strange slug. They have some kind of reflective rock wrapped around them, and you can see their face behind a big bubble.

>Say Hi to it

>"Hi."

"My word! You speak!"

Kuni moves a bit closer.

"Who even are you?"

The strange slug slowly descends from the ramp. His antennae seem transfixed on the three of you, perking up with rapt attention.

"The natives speak... Marvellous, to find life the moment I land. I am Captain Cornu! Pleasure to make your acquaintance."

>Hi, can you bring our buddy back from the dead?

"Ah?"

Captain Cornu looks around, finally noticing the carnage. He looks down at the creature that his hollow rock crushed, watching as the blue blood billows into the water. He notices Bull as well.

"I'm afraid I can't. I have no such technology aboard my little pod. I didn't expect to find anybody at all, and am ill-equipped."

You turn towards Kuni and The Druid.

>The creature coming from the great outer space is able to squish slugsquisher. I haven't seen such a slug, clad in hard rocks and crystals. This must be a great technological warrior; let's recruit him

The Druid nods in agreement, and leans in to whisper to you.

"Indeed. It seems fate has brought him here to us. Though, do not so easily trust entities who come from beyond... They aren't always what they seem."

Turning back to Cornu, you slither forward to introduce yourself as Siloë Limmy Urinor Gabroch, and invite him to come along with you for now.

"Ah... I would most welcome that. I'm stranded here in the Ocean, and my pod is a poor shelter in the long run. I'd greatly appreciate being led to somewhere I could stay. And of course, I absolutely MUST learn more about you natives!"

>Ask him if he know anything about motes of awareness and consciousness, do they come from the same above world as him?

You ask the strange alien about motes.

"These 'Motes', could you describe them?"

After you do so, the slug tilts his head to the side.

"Can't say that I do. You say these motes were what gave you sentience? So you alie- apologies, natives aren't conscious without them?

>Kuni, would you be ok to turn your sponge into a basecamp?
>Cornu, we will introduce you to what we call Ferals there. You are lucky meeting us peacefull lot first, ocean is an home full of various dangers and ill-faith individuals.

Yep, you say. You tell Captain Cornu about the Ferals, and how they're kinda dickheads and retards. Good thing he ran into friendly Sea Slugs immediately! You sense that he'd like to find out all about you, and share more about himself, but standing in the middle of an impact crater is a bad idea, so you ask if Kuni would be willing to share her sponge for now.

"For you? Of course. You've more than earned the right, after helping me this far... And thanks for directing the healing my way."

>>Bury Bull's corpse, maybe you could somehow resurrect him later and at worst preventing his body to be eaten is probably more respectful

But before you all head back and start talking, you need to bury Bull! You begin digging, and Kuni joins you. She stares at the body, with a somewhat guilty expression. The Druid doesn't help, but he seems to approve of giving it back to the grove.

"Siloë. A word?"

You slither over to the Druid, who looks around the Grove. It's utter chaos, with upturned soil, ripped buds, and bodies all over the place.

"I thank you. Truly. I never expected that you and your team would be able to end the menace for good. I do not regret giving you that mote, in the end. A trifling matter, in exchange for defeating the Slugsquisher. Squish slugs, it will no longer do."

He moves into a sunspot to start recovering. Cornu watches in amazement as his wounds heal before your very eyes.

"This is where we part ways, then. I shall open the grove up for you. Do not worry about cleaning up. Soon, it will be restored to its prior state.

Ah, yeah. He wasn't part of your party like Kuni, was he? Now that your job is done, he wishes to go back to his old life. You're unsure of whether you want to let him part ways, and it seems unlikely that he would abandon his grove and go adventuring with you, now that he's the only one in it. His skills are useful though...

Welp, this is goodbye then. You can always come back to visit, he says, once he's restored his security. Considering the fact that you killed all his underlings, you two are still on pretty good terms! Killing a giant crab together tends to do that.

((I've also realised I forgot to give XP, but I'll do that and the skills upon the next rest))

And so, the three of you move back towards the Sponge, in order to get The Captain settled in. He closes up the metal orb he came in, without even touching it. Amazing! It takes a while to get there, and you give Ol' Salty a nod as you pass by. Cornu marvels at the sight of the giant shell, but doesn't linger. Eventually, you reach the Sponge, and see Bull's feral brothers grazing on it. They're no wiser to his death. And right in front of them is... HEY!

The two Ruffians are right there, caught in the middle of mounting an attack.

"Oh shit, bub."

"Hey! That's the dickhead from before, bub! Crap!"

And they have YOUR babe! You recall what Bull said about being able to control his own kind after eating a mote. These two assholes have dragged the Teal babe into their stupid little gang!

"Can it! This dumb bitch isn't enough to turn the tables. Plus, they have six. Where's that damn purple...? Nevermind. See you around, bub."

They turn to leave towards parts unknown, with your feral Babe in tow. If you want to do anything about it, you have a window of time in which to act. But otherwise, you can return your attention to your teammates.

"Well! Who might these two be? They look quite a bit like your purple friend over yonder." says Captain Cornu. He wiggles towards the two ferals and tries to introduce himself, only to be ignored. You can't help but feel entertained by this. Finally, you're not the one that this is happening to.

"Captain Cornu, those are, uh, the ferals we told you about." Kuni interjects.

"Indeed? Well, I just took them for men of few words. You natives are certainly unique. All sorts of different coloration between species..."

He relaxes on the sponge and starts to get settled in. You feel like this is a good time to start fielding specific questions, if you have nothing else you'd like to do first. He'll most likely be giving you answers as well, in a lengthy wall of exposition!

>Abandon Babe. Kuni is good enough as a babe, plus OG Babe will become a bub spamming retard. We can find better.

After having your efforts spurned several times, you've realised that you'd much rather have the company of someone who speaks, like Kuni and the Druid. You decide to let things run their course. If these two try and come back, you'll take them out for good. They really just have it coming at this point, the speech-impeded fucktards.

>Take a rest to restore (and XP) after the boss fight
>Ask him where does he comes from, where does he go
>Ask him what his abilities are
>What's his purpose of learning about life here, plus what is life from where he comes

You decide to settle down and have a chat with Captain Cornu. The first thing you ask him is where he's from.

"Ah. Well... This might be an odd question, but you're aware that you're in an Ocean, am I right?"

>"Yeah, of course."

"Well. What do you know of the world outside it?"

"What do you mean?"

>"Outside the Ocean? What's there?"

"Yes, that's about what I expected. Above the surface of the water is something called 'air', which you can't breathe. I come from the surface, where it's filled with air. That's why I wear this suit, see?"

You look a bit closer. Come to think of it, that strange bubble around his face has been there the whole time! It's not a bubble after all. You reach out to smack it, finding that it's some kind of transparent rock or crystal. Cornu doesn't say anything about you just flopping your antennae in his face, and carries on without skipping a beat.

"I was in a larger vessel with my fellow Snails. But something happened to our ship, that sent it crashing towards the ocean. It was... Unfortunate, and I don't know how many of my comrades are still alive. But I managed to get into an escape pod and was sent down here. My course correction was malfunctioning, so I just followed my instincts... And ended up right on top of your big sea monster!"

Kuni squirms on the spot, looking visibly perturbed. You can pretty much follow the same train of thought as her. What if this was her fault in the first place? Her skill was to see some sort of future. Would Cornu have landed on that same spot, if she didn't influence destiny with that skill? Would it have happened anyway? Either way, it's quite a lot of power for a single sea slug to have. These skills are kinda wacky.

"Well... My goal is to head to the highest point possible, and see if my transponder can signal another ship or activate its distress beacon. I'm too deep underwater to get a connection now."

>Ask him what his abilities are

"Ah. Well... My suit has solar charging, and some rudimentary weapons built in. But apart from that, I don't have anything I'd consider an 'ability'. What are you referring to?"

In response, you blast an arrow into the sand.

"My word!"

>"So, what's life like where you come from?"

"Surprisingly, my people are rather similar to yours. Not as colourful, but I already see several similarities! We have large shells on our backs that we can retreat into, however! I can't do it while in this suit, but we have a natural protective carapace."

"Wow, wish we had something like that."

>"Seems like we have the benefit of Skills, though."

He goes on about the surface for a little bit more, telling you about various animals. Giant monsters named 'birds', massive creatures who have segmented bodies like Slugsquisher, and all sorts of delicious plant flavours. As you rest, the XP from the fight finally flows in.

You pick your new abilities, and direct the blind slug towards choosing hers as well. And then you relax. For the first time since you consumed a mote, you have no obligations. It's relaxing! You have Kuni with you, who's become a pretty decent friend, and you have this strange alien from the 'surface', who's an absolute enigma at the moment. You're also rid of Bull, who was the whole reason you were forced to go on this quest in the first place. Though, if he hadn't been there, you're sure that you and Kuni wouldn't have been able to make it all the way.

>>5239836

Speaking of which, you recall the promise of a reward from Kuni back then. You remind her of it midway through a conversation with Cornu about everything you've done so far.

"Ah? You wanted me to chew on you, I recall. Well, I suppose it wouldn't do THAT much harm, though I'm still confused as to why. But... You haven't quite made good on the promise yet, have you?"

>"What? What do you mean?"

She motions to the two freeloaders who are on the sponge.

"With Bull dead, we can't really drive them off, because they'll just keep coming back automatically. But they're crowding the area, and any Purple slug who comes by can just take control of them again and attack us. I still want them gone. It's true that they need the sponge to eat from, but that's no excuse for barging into my home and demanding they be allowed to stay. I've been here far longer."

Fucking damn it. So much for no obligations.

"I also don't want them dead, though... He gave his life fighting with us. I think we at least owe it to him to not kill his brothers."

Maybe you should have hung back a bit and let those Teals kill them after all. Kuni probably wouldn't have felt bad shooting THOSE assholes. You're perfectly willing to just take them out back and execute them, but your party member is being a bleeding-heart pansy. Now what?

Damn. Yeah... It sure would be a shame if those violet retards died a viole(n)t death. That's the sentiment you express to Kuni, at least. But perhaps Captain Cornu has something that could help out?

"A sponge duplicator? I'm afraid I have no such thing, my boy. I do believe I could analyse this sponge and find out how exactly it reproduces, but I'm afraid I'm short on resources at the moment. My landing pod had only the bare essentials, and I'm equipped with just this solar powered suit."

Well, that's out of the way. The only solution seems to be getting them a mote, or finding some other purple to tard wrangle them. You're completely fine with killing them, but you want to keep that fact from your allies for now.

>Speaking of which, let's ask Old Salty about surrounding, he might know about some higher place to help our snailbro

>"Let's go visit Ol' Salty"

"Who might that be?"

=====

A few moments later, you're standing in front of the giant shell. Captain Cornu stares at him in awe, completely flummoxed by the fact that it speaks the same language.

"By my shell! This is phenomenal!"

"Oh... What an odd little snail..."

You tell the scallop all about your little adventure with Slugsquisher, and then ask him for aid regarding getting to a high place. While you're at it, you ask for any more spots where you might get motes, to rid yourself of the two purples peacefully.

"Oh... There's two places you can go. Down, and up. Perhaps you'll find more motes in the ROCK POOLS. If you're living on the sponge over there, you should have seen the entrance. But be warned... It leads to THE ABYSS if you go too far. And as for a high place? Well, you want to go past the SANDCASTLE and keep climbing until you reach the PELAGIC PINNACLE. That's straight West as well."

It's integral that I at least establish a connection and not delay my rescue, for they don't even know that anyone has survived at the moment. >What are you?

"My name is Brutal Star. I suppose I'm... A warden, who ensures the abyss doesn't leak out."

>What direction did they go in?

"Straight South. The mouth of the ROCK POOLS is a straight line, that branches off several areas down. Beyond that are the depths. But for now... You ought to find urchins and anemones among the rocks, maybe a few slugs of the deep."

>Any more advice for us?

"In search of motes, hmm? My duty forbids me from divulging too much. I will say, there ARE motes. But you'll find little that will help you in the pools. I would ask that you turn back, but it is not my job to prevent things from going in. Only certain things from coming out."

>How do we know it's 'Too far'?

"You'll know."

Well, that's cryptic. Brutal Star shuffles aside to let you pass. You had him pegged as some slow shell-like thing, like Ol' Salty. But he's pretty fast with those five limbs. You catch sight of tube-feet beneath his body, as he sidles up onto a rock and allows you three to go past. With a swift nod to Kuni and Captain Cornu, you make your way into the next area.

====

"Heheh! It's over, bub!"

"Yeah! With this, we'll have a third member, bub!"

"It's red too. Think that'll do anything special? We gotta GET that spike-shooting shithead, bub."

"Maybe, maybe... Guess we won't find out till she eats it, bub."

You slither through the long passage that separates the SANDY BASIN from the ROCK POOLS. The first area you see is craggy and rough, with stone instead of sand. It's rather bare, and the walls loom over you, cutting off sunlight considerably. Several insanely spiky creatures are milling about, and there are red organisms rooted to the ground. Their fronds drift about softly, opening and closing like great maws. The three teals are there, including the former babe. They don't seem to have noticed you yet. However, it seems they've found a m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛o̵̭͑f̸̛̖ just like you did, and are about to awaken their third member.

It's dark. Cold. Something about this place is wrong. It feels like it's rejecting slugkind. You squirm on the spot, looking uncomfortable. Kuni and Cornu seem completely fine.

I'll be finishing the first thread shortly. Unsure when I'll make the next part, but here's the mini-arc that we'll be stopping at. Thanks for sticking along so far, it's been fun drawing little slug dudes and seeing the personality you guys have guided Siloe towards.

Yeah, fuck these guys. They're still plotting to get the sponge, and even though you've left the Babe behind, it's not like you want to deal with the problem of them getting a new ally, who might even have a skill from some special mote. Can't they just leave you all the fuck alone?

You quickly exchange words with Cornu. Kuni backs you up, as she's completely willing to defeat these two while preserving the last slug. The Captain agrees, though you sense he's a bit hesitant to delve into the politics of the natives. You blast one with an arrow before it can react, causing the whole group to turn towards you.

"AUGH! You- No! Fuck off, bub!"

"You'll regret this! Take THIS! And THAT! WHA!"

It's not even worth getting into. Unlike your previous battles, there's no need for strategy or a turn-by-turn breakdown. It's so easy that you demolish them in moments, filling their bodies with cerata arrows while Kuni distracts them. She finishes one off, and you impale the other. Cornu seems impressed at the sight. You all make sure not to aggro the babe, leaving her unharmed and free to eat the mote. And indeed, as soon as the two die, she reverts to normal behaviour.

And indeed, her default behaviour is to approach the m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛. The m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛.

Something is distinctly wrong. This isn't the same colour of mote that you had. That was a Mote of Awareness, and the one that Kuni had was a Mote of Consciousness. This is neither. It's something more malignant. Something wrong. It pulses with the same crimson hue as the anemones of the depths, and you feel a sense of foreboding as the Teal Slug chows down.

As she integrates the m̷̞̕o̶͍̐t̸̟̑e̶͓͆ ̵̠͛ into her body, the darkness closes in. A chant fills the ocean around you, striking terror into the hearts of you and your allies. Kuni grows silent and begins quivering, visions of an uncertain future piercing her precognitive sight. Black sludge bleeds from the Teal slug's radula, and vicious welts burst from her flesh. The same light emanates from the stationary anemone.

It feels like the depths are trying to claim you, and suck you all into itself. You stand your ground, transfixed in place as the change overwhelms the slug. The Urchins attempt to flee, slowly wriggling towards the exit of the pools in desperation.

=Thread 1: FIN=

Thanks for playing, fellas! Its been fun. Not sure when I'll make Thread 2, but I have a lot of stuff planned. Things like what exactly the motes are, and where they're from, other NPCs, other regions, Snails, new allies, etc. I just need to recharge on my Sea Slug enthusiasm, which comes by every so often. Siloe has shaped up to be a fucking psycho, so that should be interesting if we have perspective changes in the future.
