>Stay in the air and look around as long as you can before the helicopter has to go back.

“Keep us up as long as you can,” you request through the headset as you reach the battlefield. “I want to see as much as we possibly can.”

“Can do,” Erwin replies. She fiddles with a dial and flicks a gauge before swinging the helicopter around to give you the best view possible as you circle the field.

“Notice anything?” You ask Azusa as the two of you observe the ground through the window.

“Uh, big hills in the centre?” Azusa offers. “Some forests, and not much else really.”

“Exactly,” you nod. “Several big dominating terrain features, and otherwise pretty empty. You missed something though.”

“Huh?” Azusa glances to you confused then back to the field. “What did I miss?”

“Look at the roads,” you reply. To her credit, once pointed in the right direction she quickly gets what you’re driving at.

“Oh! They’re covered by thick hedges!” She realises. “They basically cut the field up!”

“Exactly,” you nod. “Even from the top of the hill, it’d be difficult to see and shoot through the hedges like that.”

“So flanking chances?”

“A lot of chances,” you agree. “That depends on where we start though.”

“Well, we either use the forests or we use the hedges,” she replies. You spend a little longer going around the field till Erwin tells you that the helicopter needs to head back at which point the aviation club member with you takes over. The three of you are dropped off in the southern field, as close as the helicopter can get you to the rally point, but still a long walk.

>Take the time to have a look at something nearby (The forests/The hedges/The hills)

>Call for pick up from your team.

“Couldn’t they have dropped us closer?” Azusa complains as she realises how far the three of you will have to walk to get to the rally point.

“Not really,” Erwin hums. “No good ground to land on closer, and I think it’s better not to get disqualified in exchange for less achy legs.”

“I hate it when there’s a good reason for things,” Azusa mutters.

“Thankfully, we should be able to avoid both,” you chuckle as you pull out your phone. “Axel, we need pick up.”

He says nothing as usual, and the call ends. Ten minutes later however, Werewolf is rumbling towards you and twenty minutes later, the three of you are back at base where you’ve arrived just in time for a strategic conference.

“Anything to report?” Miho asks as the three of you approach. You nudge Azusa, prompting her to speak.

“As expected, the field is dominated by the hills in the centre,” Azusa begins. “Aside from that, there’s forests on the west and east of the field as well as hedgerows that block line of sight running along all the major roads.”

“There are, are there?” Miho hums, looking at the map again. “They’re on here, but the map doesn’t do them justice. In that case, we can go with operation three stooges.”

“Three stooges?” Azusa asks.

“Boko movie reference,” Yukari states.

“One team will seize the high ground and use it to pin the enemy in while the other uses the road and hedgerows to sneak around, and the heavy tanks guard our flanks,” Miho explains. “Pravda can easily throw their numbers against us here, so we must be smart about it.”

>Offer up an alternative suggestion.
>Ask to be placed with the team taking the high ground, Werewolf is purpose made for the mission.
>Ask to be placed with the guard forces. From the front Werewolf might as well be a heavy tank.
>Ask to be put with the flanking force. Werewolf’s speed makes him able to keep up with lighter tanks while bringing a much bigger punch.

>Ask to be placed with the team taking the high ground, Werewolf is purpose made for the mission.

You take a second to scan the plan, and instantly realise where you’d be best placed.

“I’ll take that high ground mission,” you state. “Seems pretty clear cut to me that Werewolf would be best for that mission.”

“Agreed,” Miho nods. “Azusa, do you want to take one side of the blocking force? Leopon team can take the other.”

“Right!” Azusa confirms. “We won’t let you down!”

“I know,” Miho smiles. “I’ll take the flanking mission then.”

With the missions doled out to their respective command elements, then comes splitting the rest of your team among the various missions. Miho taking the most dangerous task, takes first dibs, but to keep the team stealthy she takes only Duck team and Cheetah team with her – both very fast and relatively stealthy compared to tanks like yours. That however leaves the other ten members of your team to split up as necessary.

“Do you want any support, Azusa?” You ask. “The more you have, the easier it’ll be for you to hold, but the less we’ll have to force the hills.”

“Uh,” Azusa seems to blue screen for a second. “I’ll take a tank to support each side? The rest of you are close enough to reinforce us, if necessary, right?”

“Right, just holler at us if you do end up needing help,” you reassure her. “Do you have any ideas for who you want?”

“We’ll take a Jumbo each?” She asks. “I don’t want to take too much away from the centre.”

“A Jumbo each sounds fine,” you nod. That leaves you with the bulk of the tanks and several hills to put them on.

+1, with the addition of having the tank destroyers and de facto tank destroyers (Werewolf) be on the north/south hills. Those hills have much wider and longer fields of fire. It should look like a 3/2/3 split.

>Mostly even split, slightly more on the North and south hills

“Right, we need to think about how we’re going to take those hills,” you say to the members of your team directly under you. “I think that we split ourselves three-two-three between the north, central, and southern hills that we’re responsible for. We want our best long-range tanks on the north and south hills to cover the fields, and the middle tanks just have to be able to hold it. Between the three hills we can also support each other if any one hill comes under concerted attack. Any questions?”

Erika’s hand goes up.

“If you promise to be smart about it, you can be in charge of the tanks on your hill.”

Erika’s hands go back down.

“Any other questions?”

“Which tanks do you want on each hill specifically?” Erwin asks. “I’m assuming ourselves, Turtle, Ocelot, and Werewolf will all be on the outer hills?”

“As well as Hound,” you nod. “Myself with Turtle and Anteater on one hill. Yourselves, Ocelot and Hound on the south, with Mallard and Shark taking the centre.”

Most of your team looks fine with that and after a little bit more chatter about each team’s jobs, you disperse to go to your tanks and get them ready. Yours is mostly ready thanks to the work of your crew while you were touring the field, but you go through your checks anyway since you have the time.

“Friiiiiiiitz,” a familiar voice whines as she approaches. “I think you gotta re-think your plan.”

“What makes you say that?” You ask as you turn to face Erika.

“The tanks in the centre are going to get stomped,” she replies. “The Mark IV is only good for taking a shell for a better tank and by itself, Mallard team won’t last against a concerted push.”

>“We’ll be able to support them from the other hills.”
>“Go help them take the hill then head south then.”
>“I’ll send Anteater to help them.”

>“Go help them take the hill then head south then.”
I'm between this one and sending Anteater to help. I think this one best solves the issue while maintaining long ranged firepower on the flanks, but it does leave some down time while she repositions. I'm almost willing to just let us have a "weak" center that's just there to contest the ground.

>“Go help them take the hill then head south then.”

“Me?” Erika asks, pointing to herself.

“Is there anyone else around to help them take the hill?” You retort, looking around dramatically. Erika has the good sense to look slightly embarassed for a moment before shaking her head and puffing her chest out.

“Damn right I will, I’ll take that hill harder than it’s ever been taken before in its life!” With that, Erika spins around and marches off towards Shark and Mallard team, likely to inform them of the change of plan and her new temporary lordship over them. You consider going over there yourself, but both Shark and Mallard have strong personalities, so you leave them to it, and instead get back to finishing your checks.

You’re done a few minutes later, and a few more after that, Miho begins leading the first tanks of your team onto the field.

“Let’s get moving Max,” you order. The engine whines in response, swiftly turning to a roar as the turbine spins off and with a grunt of exertion, Werewolf sets off leading the element that will head for the hills to your starting point. You reach it with no problems, and while Miho gets out to go do the pleasantries with Pravda’s leadership, you have a think about getting everything to the hills they’ll need to get to.

“Max, map shows a river between us and the hill, will we be able to cross it?” You ask.

“Easily,” he snorts. “Might be a bit dicier for Turtle and Anteater though, they’re smaller than us, less waterproof too.”

“River’s not all one depth though,” Leo points out. “If you look at the map there appear to be various crossings depending on time of year.”

“Any that will be available right now?” You ask.

“No clue,” he replies. “I’m sure there’ll be at least one though, and if worst comes to worst, we can tow them through, and they can use a bucket to bail their tank out or something.”

You take a second to think about it as you watch Miho begin the walk back to her tank.

“They’re gonna have to swim,” you decide. “If we had the choice, I would’ve liked to save the automotive club the trouble, but we need them there fast.”

“Aye aye,” Leo nods, “good thing we brought the tow cables then.”

“And didn’t bother to unpack anything not illegal,” Max grunts. You can head a crinkling through the intercom, suggesting that he’s working his way through rations left over from the Unlimited Class.

“All tanks,” Miho interrupts your musings. “You know your jobs. If Pravda plays it like they usually do, you guys will have to fight off the bulk of the enemy forces while we attempt to find and destroy the enemy flag tank.”

You glance to yours as she says that. Turtle team are sitting pretty, with the big obvious flag marking them for death. They should be safe behind you, but it will be very easy to get flanked given the numbers discrepancy your facing, you just hope that Miho snag their flag tank first.

“Panzer Vor!” Miho’s voice signals the beginning of the match, confirmed by the artillery overhead.

“Let’s get moving Max,” you order. Werewolf roars to a start, and you start trundling towards the hill with the rest of your group following behind you. It’s smooth sailing for you, with your engine deciding to play nice. The same cannot be said for Leopon team’s tank which decides to break down as they’re traversing a rather tight gap between the river and one of the hills, effectively blocking the rest of your team behind you.

“Leopon, report,” you order as you hear them grind to a halt behind you.

“Minor engine fire,” Hoshino reports with a grunt. “Nothing we can’t fix, but it’ll take time to do.”

“Time we don’t have,” Ruby mutters from beneath you. “I say we shove them into the river and let everyone pass.”

“The commander would go ballistic,” Max points out. “How about we tow them? With overdrive and in a low gear, we should be able to shift them to their position without losing too much speed.”

“What’s the but?” You ask.

“But if we do that, I wouldn’t use overdrive again till we can work over the engine,” Max replies. “I rather like it, you know?”

“Right,” you sigh.

“Yeah, no worries,” Nakajima grunts. “It was a small fire, we’ll be done in no time.”

“Good to hear,” you nod.

“And up I go!” Erika declares. You don’t look back, too busy scanning the ground in front of you, but you can hear the whine of her tank’s engine as it climbs up the hill. You continue moving forwards as well, soon reaching the river that your team are going to need help to cross.

You see a flash.

It’s followed a moment later by the crack of a shell.

“They’re shooting at us!” Sodoko complains. “Good think they can’t seem to aim.”

“I saw a flash on the hill! The Furthest one!” Erika exclaims. That lines up with the flash you saw, though unfortunately given the elevation of the target and the distance to it, you probably don’t have a great shot. Neither does the person shooting at you if the degree they missed Mallard team is anything to go by.

“Max, stop us here,” you order before quickly switching channels. “The rest of you keep moving.”

You grind to a stop a moment later at which point you swing the turret around to face the hill.

“Ruby, three kilometres away, top of that hill,” you order. “Axel, give us some SUHE.”

You hear the clunk of a shell being ejected and another being slammed into the breach.

“On the way!” Ruby declares, you watch as the shell flies through the air, and hits the ground in front of the T-34 on the hill, showering it in dirt.

“Nice shooting,” Max snarks, once he realises it’s a miss.

“Chauffeurs aren’t meant to speak,” Ruby retorts. As they bicker, you refocus on your team. Erika has lead the charge across, followed by the pair of Jumbos that can make the crossing easily. Anteater is cautiously picking their way across while the Mark IV and Hetzer scour the riverbank for the easiest place to cross. Leopon has also managed to fix their issue and is slowly moving to catch up with everyone else.

“I see them!” Erika crows, “a pair of T-34s! They just came around hill!”

“Nail them,” you order, slightly superfluously. Erika has already fired and hit the leading T-34 with a shot from the occult club finishing it off, while a third from Mallard skims the side and ricochets off. You spot the commander of the other one look at her comrade, then quickly begin reversing. Your turret also begins to turn, Ruby automatically tracking the target.

“Not right now I’m afraid,” you sigh as you retake control of the turret and straighten it out. “We need to get our other tanks over.”

“What! This is literally 1984!” Ruby complains.

“Max, put us upstream of where Turtle and Shark are attempting to cross,” you order. “We can break the current for them which should make it a bit easier for them to cross.”

“Aye aye,” Max grunts. Werewolf shifts back into the river and you immediately notice the area immediately downstream of it becoming a bit calmer.

“Turtle, Shark, now’s your chance,” you say over the radio. “Max how long can we stay here?”

“Depends on how soft the ground is,” Leo answers for him. He pokes his head out of the the turret and stares at the river for a moment. “Very small rocks, easily movable. Werewolf could stay here forever and be fine but we’ll be slowly sinking them entire time.”

“So don’t stay longer than we have to,” you summarise. Thankfully, neither the Student Council or Shark team get stuck and quickly make it to the other side at which point Max punches it and pushes Werewolf out of the river.

Ahead of you, things are starting to heat up. Erika and the Jumbos are trading shots with more and more arriving tanks. From what you can hear, an IS-2 has appeared to reinforce the fleeing T-34, and an ISU is somewhere nearby though no one has given you a concrete location yet. Similarly, on the other side of the field, reports are coming from Duck team of a massive convoy using the east-west road, though the contents of said convoy are unreported.

>If there’s a convoy in the south, there’s likely one in the north. Overdrive to get to the northern hill.

“You guys know what a convoy in the south means,” you grumble into the intercom.

“One in the north?” Ruby asks hopefully.

“Got it in one,” you nod.

“Oh man…those flanking shots…” Ruby makes a weird noise which you immediately scrub from your memory.

“Max, get us to the north hill, as fast as we can,” you order. “Our teammates are more than enough to fight it out in the centre, but someone needs to intercept that convoy.”

“If it exists,” Leo points out.

“It exists,” Ruby insists. “It must exist.”

“Whatever floats your boat,” Leo shrugs.

A minute later, Werewolf’s turbine is roaring, and you’re racing for the northern hill.

“Leopon, cover Turtle as they move up, over,” you order. They’ve now caught up having dealt with their fire issues.

“Copy that!” Nakajima confirms.

As you speed over to the northern hill, the battle is really beginning in earnest for your teammates. There are almost enough enemy tanks to outnumber Ooarai’s forces facing you already, with no indication that all of them have arrived. Even more pressingly, the heavier tanks are starting to arrive, with reports of a pair of tank destroyers moving up as well as more heavy tanks that will need dealing with.

At the very least, Miho’s stealth mission has remained undetected.

“Strap in,” Max warns as you approach the hill. He doesn’t slow down as you reach the hill, and since not one of you has straps of any kind, you’re all thrown around as you thunder up the hill.

“Fu-”

You don’t get to find out who Ruby is swearing at since her headset gets thrown to floor somewhere and she gets thrown into Axel. You make it to the top of the hill though, and after a moment to collect themselves, your crew is ready to exploit it.

Those 152's are no joke. they should be prioritized. Also get a use in of the gunslinger while we can. Also, that convoy moved really fast, faster even than our own flanking force, there is no way they have any sort of heavy armor, so I bet we can expect lots of that around us. Nice of them to go single file head on against an M6 and Jumbo with TD support though.

“Ruby, it’s your time to shine,” you inform your gunner as she readjusts herself. “We need both those tank destroyers on the hill opposite gone as soon as.”

“That means…?”

“Poor Axel is going to have to put those muscles to use, yes,” you confirm. You hear the thunk as Axel’s head impacts the turret thinking about the work he has to do, but he’s a trooper, and you can hear the breach moving already. “Give me SUHE. We’re going to try hitting the tank destroyers and the T-34-85 on the hill west of us.”

“Aye, we’re not going to have much left after this,” Ruby warns.

“Acceptable,” you reply. Axel slams the breach shut.

“We’re ready,” Ruby confirms.

“Max,” you don’t need to say any more than that. Max skillfully moves Werewolf forward just enough to see them, that’s all Ruby needs.

“On the way!” She shouts, confirmed by the roar of Werewolf’s gun. She’s already turning for the SU-152 as the shell impacts and detonates, just too slow to prevent the ISU getting a shot off.

“Good kill!”

“On the way!” The second shell screams out the barrel. This one is right on time, destroying the SU-152 before it gets a chance to fire a thing.

“Good kill!”

“On the way!” The last shot leaves the barrel, but whether by luck or skill the T-34 on the hill manages to avoid a second SUHE shell.

“Miss,” you say, getting audible complaint from Ruby at that. While she’s complaining about that, and Axel is taking a breather, you take stock of the damage. Your team between them has managed to destroy an IS-2 and damage another T-34, at the cost of Anteater being taken out and the Mark IV being put out of action while saving Mallard. Despite the save, Mallard team is squawking about taking a hit, but a cursory inspection put them in decent shape. Similarly, down south, there’s a lot of chatter and excitement but no damage taken for a T-34.

“It’s success, but they can afford these losses to grind us down,” Leo summarises, and you can’t help but agree. They’ve lost only five tanks to your two and unlike you, they have another 25 or so to throw at you.

Turtle team begins to rumble up the hill behind you, and Leopon begins to move up the road to cover your flanks.

“Hound team, can you stay on the central hill? Mallard team won’t be able to hold it by themselves against any concerted effort.”

“If they have the tanks left for one,” Erika snickers. “Sure, thing Fritz, we’ll be right there.”

“They have more than we do,” you warn.

“A target rich environment,” Erika dismisses. You have a retort ready, but she’s following her orders so you let it die in your mouth and turn your attention back to dealing with the enemy.

“Fritz, I’m seeing a lot of smoke to our north,” Anzu drawls.

“I see it as well,” you confirm, pointing your binoculars to the northwest. “I also see tanks though the smoke.”

“You do?” Anzu asks, She sticks her head out and glares in the general direction. “Huh, guess sticking your head out the tank has benefits.”

“It does,” you grunt. “I see at least three T-34s through the smoke, with the amount they’re putting out, I bet there’s more.

“Agreed,” Anzu nods. “Probably hoping to encircle us.”

“There’s a similar situation in the south,” Leo reports. “The column has spread out now, about nine more tanks on top of the one that got knocked out.”

“Did they spot Anglerfish and the infiltration team?” You ask.

“No requests for help from them, so they must have slipped past,” Leo replies. “Which means that the plan is working.”

“We need tanks clearing the smoke and tanks firing,” you say over the intercom, sounding the order off your team. They mistake it as an order though, and Axel begins pulling out another round.

“No no, you guys take five,” you order before switching to the team radio. “Turtle, Occult club, you guys put some HE into the smoke clouds, see if you can clear it. Leopon, be ready to engage anything that we spot after that. Rabbit team, I don’t know the situation over there, but I expect it’ll be something similar.”

“A lot less smoke and a lot more tanks,” Azusa mutters back. “We’ll deal with them though.”

“Do your best,” you reply. By the time you’re done giving orders, the teams on your side are already firing away. Turtle and the Occult team are ripping into it with their guns, and Leopon is waiting for it to clear enough to get a shot.

“More smoke is being laid,” Leo crackles over the intercom. You look down, and his hatch is open, and he’s looking out north towards the Pravda tanks pushing east.

“Yeah, I see it,” you nod. “At least a couple of them in the hedgerows along the road providing covering fire.”

“We got one!” Nakajima crows. You turn your attention back to the column and while you still can’t see most of it, you can see the one smoking wreck thanks to Leopon’s actions.

“Azusa? Your end?” You ask.

“We must’ve taken like a dozen hits, but we got a pair of them,” she says, slightly dazed. “There are more though, and they’re moving fast.”

“Any hits taken?” You ask.

“Occult club’s taken a nasty hit,” Nakajima replies.

“We took many but no damage,” Azusa replies. “Our Jumbo escort has though.”

If we move from here, the Northern flank probably collapses. I think we need to trust that Miho will find the flag tank in the rear while protecting our own on this position. Our high ground perks are now active too, so we are quite tanky where we are especially with the wolfpack. Penetration contests, plus long range to decrease penetration, and extra HP in case anything actually does penetrate. If we are able to defeat the Northern attack soundly enough, then we can perhaps counterattack. For the center, we can't abandon it or holding either flank will become much more challenging, but they won't necessarily know if we move just one tank, and I trust Erika to hold any advance down the center, and she can counterattack well too.

“Gents, lady, we’re responsible for guarding the flag tank, with ourselves if need be,” you mutter over the intercom.

“Turtle, stay behind us,” you order.

“We have no problems with that Fritz.” The President says it casually, but you can hear the creeping anxiety in her voice. She might not be a tanker, but you reckon she’s cottoned on to the fact that two to one odds isn’t great for success.

“Miho will pull through,” you reassure her before turning your attention back to the situation at hand. The T-34s to your north are still moving at high speed. Ruby is already tracking them, and from the chatter over the radio, so are Leopon and their escort Jumbo.

“Azusa, how’s it going down there?” You ask. “Do you need support?”

“There are a lot of them,” Azusa mutters. “Support won’t get here in time. We’ll fight a delaying action for the rest of you.”

“Alright, good luck,” you nod before switching channels. “Do you think it’s worth radioing Miho?”

“She usually guides us through each battle, and she isn’t right now,” Leo replies. “That suggests that either she can’t or doesn’t want to.”

“And there’s nothing we know of blocking comms,” you finish. “Alright, we’ll just have to trust her. How’s the aiming going Ruby?”

If they are changing course, I assume that means they are going east? Anyways, if they aren't heading straight at us, that should expose their sides. Not sure if Ruby knows where the rack on these tanks are, but it doesn't hurt to try when we get the opportunity. Don't want to use our frenzy here, because it's useful for taking down high priority targets.

Also, counting these tanks brings me to 24. Funny how they leave their flag tank isolated wherever it is. We might be able to push through the center after all depending on how this develops.

“Sure thing,” Ruby murmurs. “I have that T-44 picked out, it isn’t going to be going anywhere fast.”

“Whenever you’re ready,” you reply. You watch as the smoke gets thinner and thinner despite the efforts of the tanks in the treeline covering them because they’re moving too fast.

“There! On the way!” Ruby exclaims as she fires. Her shot seems to be the cue for the gunfight to begin, as the other tanks on your team open fire as well, and return fire quickly comes in from the Pravda tanks in front of you.

Turtle team fires a few seconds after you do, and the moment they do, you’re on the intercom to Max.

“Move us forward a tad,” you order. He responds instantly, and surges forward, ahead of Turtle team which is just as well because as you overtake them you take a hit from one of the tanks below you. You’re thrown about a bit, but the damage is minimal, and the flag tank is safe.

>-1 Guard Dog HP

“What’s the damage like!” You call to the rest of your team as you turn your eyes to the tanks to the north. Most of them are still moving, but to your immense satisfaction, the T-44 that Ruby hit is not.

“Jumbo three is out of commission,” Leopon team reports. “We tagged a T-34 as well, but it’s still moving.”

“We’re trading with an IS-2 over here!” Erika exclaims between bangs. “No effect on target yet but we’ll keep hammering! Stop them getting any closer to our Tank Destroyers!”

“We took out a pair of tanks for the Jumbo down here as well,” Erwin says. “Rabbit team took one hell of a pounding, but I don’t think they’re out of action.”

I kind of want to do blue, but I'm not sure that would accomplish much. If the flag tank is around Pravda Start, Miho's group would get there about the same time we would, and if it's not, we just lost our best position to hold off all the tanks bearing down on us. At least with us on the hill, they won't be expecting Miho's advance. We could also get flanked pretty easily by those T-34's still around the northwest hill.

As for the second prompt, I think sending in Erika could work, but she's currently dealing with the IS-2, and if we order her in, she could lose her position and would lose an advantage against the IS-2. I'm not sure how we would "tighten the perimeter" without compromising our position. I think everyone is in a decent position as is as long as they have the ability to shoot. Not sure if Jumbo 1 can shoot anything, but that should be in Erika's purview to manage.

“Erika? How’s it going?”

“We’re dominating here, Fritz,” Erika chirps back, “literally, just give me the word and we’ll sally out, crush their centre.”

“Are you sure that’s possible?”

“There are three tanks against us,” she snorts. “Max there’s another three or four hidden somewhere, but if we push them they’ll be off balance as hell.”

“Right,” you mutter to yourself. Axel is rapidly reloading Werewolf and Ruby is about ready to fire again. The T-34s to the north of you are fleeing for cover, but some of them are still visible. Ruby could probably still hit the ones that weren’t visible if she wanted.

“All tanks, Anglerfish team,” Miho’s voice cuts in through the radio. “We’ve found what we assume to be the flag tank group, close to Pravda’s start. Only problem is there’s a river in the way. We can cross, but we’ll be vulnerable while doing so. Fritz, if you could send any support our way, I’d appreciate it.

We might lose a battle of attrition here, so we should take what we can (us and Erika) and go for the Flag tank now that we know where they are. Of course, we should take Hetzer with us, I trust our ability to protect them more than them being alone on that hill, especially with Guard Dog active and Erika coming as well.

Disrupting comms might prevent the majority of the team that's on our side of the field from knowing what's going on and being able to properly respond, effectively removing them from the important part of the battle.

Scary to see that KV-2's and IS-2's are classified as medium tanks now, what kind of wonder weapons are the Russians cooking up? :^)

“Right, we’ll wait for you guys to make your move,” Miho replies. “Let us know when you’re ready.

“Will do,” you confirm before switching back to the immediate situation. “Ruby, you ready?”

“As ever.”

“Send it,” you order. There’s a split second where all is silent in the tank before Ruby calls out.

“On the way!”

By now the T-34s are specks in the distance, but you watch the shell whizz out the barrel and collide with one of them, causing it to spin out and stop moving. Another one is forced to a halt by Leopon team’s shot. The rest of the tanks stop briefly, fire back, then keep moving. Most rounds fall short, but one hits and bounces off you’re your front plate as does the one that hits Leopon team if their radio chatter is anything to go by.

“Scratch one!” Erika cheers. “We got that T-34 that’s been pinned down just below you since like the beginning of the match!”

“We got another two down here, Commander!” Azusa adds. “Unfortunately, they uh, also got me.”

“It took six of them to put Rabbit team down,” Erwin muses. “Unfortunately, that also means we’re next on the chopping block.”

“Just do what you can, we can see the Flag tank now,” you reassure her. “Speaking of doing what we can, Leo, can you hit them with some comm disruption?”

“Sure can,” he replies. “Let’s hope their comms girl isn’t paying attention.”

You leave him to it and turn your attention back to helping Miho.

That North group should be both sufficiently cowed and out of vision of us due to the hedgerow. I also like the idea of pincering them. This route doesn't really show how Erika gets there, hopefully she should find her own way to get in and support.

That's true, but if we go down the center they might be able to escape North, and we are popping smoke along the way, which made us have to shoot HE to disperse against them using this tactic. Middle isn't so bad, we do have overdrive after all.

“Turtle team, be ready to move,” you order. “We’re going to be swinging around the north of the hill ahead of us to hit the flag tank.”

“Is that safe given the number of tanks to our north?” Yuzu asks. “There were a lot of them.”

“We’ve whittled them down,” you reply, “and for the rest, well how many smoke grenades are you carrying?”

“Um,” you hear the background noise as they rummage around the tank. “We have some handheld ones?”

“We have six canister launched ones,” you reply. “We’ll be fine.”

“Erika, we’re swinging around north,” you say. “You want to push their faces in in the centre or come around with us?”

“We’ll push through them,” Erika replies. “Maybe if they spot both of us, they’ll flee south towards the commander.”

“That would be nice,” you reply. “Alright Turtle, we’re stepping off, stay right next to us.”

“Trust me, we intend to,” Anzu replies.

“Max, let’s push off,” you order. The engine goes from humming to whining to roaring, and with a jerk, Werewolf moves off. Turtle team forms up on you, struggling to keep up.

You quickly make it to the bottom of the hill – the T-34 on the one opposite you doesn’t even get a chance to fire. You take the opportunity to squeeze the trigger for the first set of smoke grenades which quickly detonate which is quickly followed by handheld ones being lobbed out of the Hetzter by Anzu. You motor forward and a couple seconds before reaching the edge of the smoke you pop the next pair, again covering your advance.

“We’re almost around the hill!” You inform Max since he likely can’t see anything anymore.

“They’re moving this way!” Miho exclaims. “We’ll have them in a second!”

The way I see it, if they are all fleeing to the South, that means their rears are to us, and we get easy knock outs, and the smoke protects our North. If the KV-2 and/or IS-2 turn to face us instead of going with the T-34, then Miho's group has an easy time picking off the flag tank. Using our abilities here is mainly just a precaution for knocking one of them out before they can fire at us. Also, at this point, these are the deciding moments of the match, so might as well use what we can, and we still have Lance for if their flag tanks survives this next round.

We do have HVAP right? Or was that just a temporary thing for the Ultimate games? I'm not seeing it in the pastebin.

“Let’s press them,” you say for Turtle team’s benefit before repeating it for your crewmates. “Axel, get the HVAP ready and have a couple rounds ready, we’re going to hit those tanks as hard as we can.”

“We going for another rapid fire?” Ruby groans.

“Yes, just one more and we should be done,” you reply. You glance behind you and see the smoke starting to dissipate already.

“Unfortunately, we can’t use Willie Pete smoke,” Leo sighs wistfully. “Those would burn forever.”

“Maybe there’s a reason we can’t fire white phosphorus around,” Max snarks.

“Ready!” Ruby cries.

“Hit them when ready,” you order, attention instantly back on the fleeing tanks. Unfortunately, they’re not stupid enough to all be facing in the direction of travel given the threat is coming from you and Erika pushing them in. Fortunately, the Flag tank is faster than its escorts, quickly creating distance, and with distance, comes the ability to slip a shot though.

“First shot! KV-2! One thousand two hundred meters!” You order. Ruby rapidly adjusts the gun, turret whirring as she does.

“On the way!” Ruby cries.

The HVAP shell whistles through the air far more obnoxiously than its AP cousin and slams into the KV-2. It detonates against the carbon, and Axel is already loading another one.

Unfortunately, the KV-2 crew seems to be on the ball today, and not a second later, a shell roars out towards you. As the massive shell detonates against your front plate, you idly muse that that’s the first time you’ve seen the KV-2 even hit something. The thought is squashed, as are you against your cupola as the shockwave from the massive explosion rocks your tank.

You’re left dazed for a moment, and slowly recollect yourself.

“Are we still in action?” Ruby groans.

There’s a pang of annoyance from Werewolf at that, as if offended by the idea that a tank like that could take him out action.

“Guess that answers that!” Max guffaws as he feels it as well.

“Axel, get the next shot up!” You order. The KV-2 is still trundling backwards, covering the T-34-85 which is moving south fast.

“We see them!” Crows Noriko out of nowhere.

“On the way!”

You fire at roughly the same time as the trio of tanks to the south. The HVAP screams through the air again, causing the KV-2 to stop dead in its tracks. The T-34 appears from behind it, only to crash into a tree as the white flag pops out the top.

“That’s it,” you sigh as you rest against the hatch. “Miho got them.”

As much as Werewolf might scoff at them, KV-2's don't screw around. Also, Miho should be the first to the bragging rights discussion with Katyusha, since she's the Captain of the team, and especially since she came up with the plan.

>Get out and have a look at the damage from the KV-2 shell.

You take a breather as you wait for the match to officially be declared over. Your radio soon crackles to life declaring it at the same time as a federation plane flying overhead dropping flares. The scattered firing you can still hear around the field slowly dies out as crews realise that the match is now officially over.

“Reckon it’s safe ta leave,” Max grunts. He pulls his headset off and opens his hatch. After a quick look around to make sure no one’s shooting at him, he hauls himself out of the hatch. You do the same, climbing to the ground. You take a moment to stretch before turning your attention back to Werewolf. His engine is still whining, Max having left it to idle but you can already see where he’s been hit this match.

“At least nothing got through,” you mutter as you inspect the front plate. Werewolf huffs in annoyance again as if aggrieved you’d consider that a possibility at all. You laugh and shift your investigation to the accursed roadwheels. Several are missing outright, but the ones that remain look intact.

“We should probably get him properly looked at,” Ruby says as she emerges. “I don’t see any damage, but you know, structural issues and all that.”

“Do we even have the facilities for that in Ooarai?” You ask.

“Not unless they’re buried somewhere,” Ruby shrugs.

“Great,” you sigh. Further negative thoughts are cut off when you’re jumped from behind.

“We won! Again!” Yuzu cheers.

“You expect anything different?” You reply as you shift your arms down to hold her legs. She wraps them around you as best she can, and you’re left with a Yuzu sized burden on your back.

“Not for a minute! You were here!”

>“Mmm, yes, stroke my ego more.”

“Ha!” There’s a bark of laughter from Yuzu and she light swats your cheek with one of the arms wrapped around your neck. “I’m sure any shmuck in your tank could do what you do.”

“If Werewolf were to let any schmuck command him,” you reply with a chuckle.

“How is he?” Yuzu asks. “I saw the KV-2 hit.”

“Well, it didn’t go through,” you reply. “Ruby wants to get him checked out though, that much high explosive can’t be good for structural integrity.”

“Well, if you need help with that, the school can fund it,” Yuzu says. “The tankery budget has money for heavy duty repairs like this.”

“It does? How do you know? How did I not know?”

“Yes, and because I helped Miho planning the budget in a way that allowed for the money for costs like this.”

“Huh, go figure,” you reply as you mull that over. “Miho handles all the money stuff?”

“More or less,” Yuzu confirms.”

You let the conversation lapse as the two of you walk roughly in the direction of the river, Pravda’s flag tank and Miho.

>“Not even when we were being charged by ten T-34s?”

“Not even then,” Yuzu laughs as you bring up the topic. “We had faith in Miho pulling through in time and faith in you to keep us safe. Which you did.”

“Like always,” you reply, getting another giggle from her.

As you approach, you see several directions you could go in. Miho is still talking to Katyusha on the outskirts of the forest. Your sister has also found Klara and is engaged in a rapid back and forth with her. There’s also the matter of all your knocked out tanks that need to be checked on and prepared for extraction.

“Let’s head for Miho,” you say as you spot the two of them talking. You readjust Yuzu on your back, then march off in their direction. It’s a short walk, and though the conversation seems to be coming to an end, you arrive in time to hear the last of it.

“I still hold that it wasn’t fair! We encircled you! That means we’re meant to have gone around and captured all of you!”

“Well, like I said a minute ago, your team ran down the road. You probably would’ve spotted us if even one tank checked the other side of the hedgerows,” Miho replies.

“Or if you’d had flank guards,” you add. “We had some of those and they held back the forces you sent at us.”

“We took them out eventually,” Katyusha replies.

“One of them, and they survived long enough.”

“Meanies!” Katyusha declares. She snaps a finger at Nonna who dutifully picks her up. That reminds you that you’ve been carrying Yuzu the entire time, so you let go of her legs and put her down. “You better win! If you beat us then lose to someone else, I’ll never forgive you!”

“Well, we’re not planning on losing any time soon, are we?” You glance at Miho as you say that.

She laughs and shakes her head. “Losing isn’t on the agenda for us any time soon.”

That seems to satisfy Katyusha. “Good! It would be embarrassing if you did!”

With that Nonna turns and they leave into the field, likely to start getting damaged tanks onto transporters to take back.

“A lot of personality in such a small person, hmm?” Yuzu muses.

“I should’ve picked Miho up when Nonna picked Katyusha up.”

“It would’ve been funny to see her face when you elevated Miho above her,” Yuzu giggles. “You might have lost that opportunity, but she could still be tired.”

It takes you a second to realise what she means by that.

“Yeah, she could be…” you reply as you turn and walk over to Miho who thankfully wandered out of earshot.

“So, Miho, long day, huh?” You ask you approach.

“You can say that again,” Miho laughs. “I’d take this over losing any day though.”

“Planning it all before hand, moving off road in what was basically radio silence, must have done a number you. I’d be pretty tired.”

“Yeah, I’m definitely pretty tired,” she sighs. Her eyes go wide as she realises her mistake. “Wait, no! Ahhh!”

She tries to run, but you’re a hair too fast and seconds later, you have her slung over your shoulder.

“Fritz put me down!” Miho complains. “Everyone is going to be able to see up my skirt!”

You shuck off your tank jacket and throw it over her. “Problem solved, feel free to rest your legs.”

“Somehow this is worse,” Miho sighs. She gives up fighting though, allowing you to carry her back onto the field where the rest of your team is slowly working on recovering all your tanks.

“Commander..s?” Azusa crows as she notices that Miho is slung over your shoulder. “I’ve started the recovery. Sorry for getting knocked out.”

“You did a great job,” you reply.

“You held off a full third of their force,” Miho says from behind you. It’s slightly muffled, so you turn around so she can say it again. “You held off a full third of their force, that’s a great job in my book.”

“Right, let’s see about getting our tanks back then, shall we?” You say as you get moving. “We can use the ones that are still operational to get the damaged ones onto the transporter. Where is that?”

“It should be arriving any minute now,” Miho says from behind you. “Can you put me down now?”

“Then you’d have to stand,” you reply, “and you’re tired.”

“I could sit?” She offers but you ignore her and go about organising the return of the tanks to Ooarai. Despite Ruby’s worries, under Max’s careful guidance, you’re able to put Werewolf’s power to shunt most of the lighter tanks onto the transports. Rabbit team’s tank is a bit more of a problem given how much it weighs but the Sensha-Do federation thankfully has other vehicles on hand and between their recovery vehicles and your own, you’re able to get everything loaded up and ready to go.

It’s only when the last tank is finally aboard that you release Miho into the cabin of the transporter.

“Ugh, I hate you,” she mumbles while glaring at you.

“How ungrateful,” you sigh as take the seat next to her, getting scattered laughs from the other tankers in the cabin with you. With everyone aboard, the transporters push off and you’re headed back to Ooarai.

It’s a long journey back, but everyone is buoyed by the victory so spirts are high. You stay at the warehouse long enough to get all the tanks down and into the warehouse before heading back to your apartment and crashing on the bed.

>Get the Sensha-Do team together so you can go over everyone’s performance

You wake up late that morning, which you reckon you deserve due to your performance. You muse on that as you get up and make yourself breakfast. It’s as you’re eating that the lightbulb goes off. You’ve gotten everyone together to discuss performance before so why not do it for this match.

You pitch the idea to Miho who is already acquiring footage of the match, so you pass it on to the rest of the club and let them know what’ll be happening in a couple hours and to be there if they can. You watch all the affirmations come in for a little bit before putting your phone away and going back to your breakfast.

You hear a thump on your door a few minutes later, followed by someone fiddling with the lock before stumbling in.

“Sleep well?”

Erika grunts as she takes the seat next to you. She takes the plate of eggs you’d made to leave in the fridge for later and digs in.

“Too busy celebrating winning,” she grunts.

“You’re not hung over, are you?” You ask.

“Nowhere to get alcohol on this ship,” Erika sighs. “Not that I would know that.”

“Of course not,” you nod, noting that down to ponder later. You wait for her to finish before the two of you leave for the warehouse together. The theatre area at the back is already starting to fill when you arrive, so you just head to the front where Yukari is fiddling with the laptop connected to the projector.

>“Lets focus on everyone’s individual performances.”

You say. “Anything that highlights what a specific team has done or the like.”

“I know exactly what you mean!” Yukari nods. “Now only if I could figure out how to get what I wanted on the laptop…”

“I’ll leave you to it,” you chuckle as you head back to your seat. There’s another couple minutes of fiddling with it till Mako gets tired of watching Yukari struggle and takes control.

The projector finally comes to life and you watch with the team a combination of official, TV and fan footage of the match.

You don’t have the time to watch the whole thing so Mako fast forwards through it, slowing down to real time or slow-motion whenever she catches an individual tank crew doing something of note. Every time, like clockwork, when a team sees themselves on the screen there’s some kind of cheering.

You ignore it though, as do Miho and Azusa from what you can tell. They and you are instead watching for moments where an individual team has shined in some respect, rather than the flashiest victory. It takes time, and a couple rewinds but eventually you have a mental list in your head of who did what well.

“What do you think, Azusa?” You ask, turning to the girl.

“Hmm?” She seems slightly surprised you’re asking. “Well, Shark team moved very fast to get in front of that shot, though whether that was by skill or luck…”

“You don’t know?” You ask, slightly amused.

“Skill,” she decides. “Despite how little they turn up to practice.”

“Anyone else?” You ask.

“Erika was pretty gutsy,” Azusa replies. “But that’s par for the course for her, so I don’t know if it was anything special.

“You guys did a decent job on the flank,” you add. “As did Leopon team and the tank destroyers covering you.”

“Who do you think did best though?” Azusa manages through a blush.

>“Probably Hippo team.” (Bonus for Hippo to accuracy when fighting from higher ground.)
>“Is it Nepotism if I say Erika?” (Erika gains another toughness roll for 3 total)
>“You guys were very gutsy.” (Rabbit team gains 1x toughness roll from all angles)

“Huh? Me? Us?” Azusa asks.

“Yeah, you, Rabbit team, all six of you,” you confirm. “You did a great job down there.”

“No way, we got knocked out,” Azusa replies.

“After facing down a third of the enemy team basically by yourself,” you sigh. “I thought we were past this Azusa, you’re working with Miho and I as equals, surely it’s not so hard to believe that you did a good job, is it?”

“I…I suppose not,” she decides after a moment’s hesitation. “We did do a pretty good job.”

“You hear that Rabbit team!?” You shout as you turn to face them. “You guys did a good job!”

“Ain’t nothing but some guts!” Aya shouts back.

“That’s our word!” Duck team cries back. An argument breaks out which you watch devolve for a minute before turning back to Azusa.

“See, your team knows it, so get it into your brain that you’re a good commander, with a good team, who gave Ooarai a great performance yesterday, understood?”

“Understood!” She confirms.

“Atta girl,” you cheer as you ruffle her hair. “Give it a couple years and you’ll be giving me and Miho a run for our money.”

“You think so?”

“I’d bet on you against everyone else here,” you reply. You consider that for a moment, look around and rephrase. “Everyone except Erika.”

Azusa follows your gaze to your sister who is currently rolling around on the floor clutching her arm after attempting to arm wrestle.

“Erika can be a bit weird sometimes,” Azusa says quietly.

“That’s my sister,” you reply.

“You didn’t say I’m wrong though.”

“So you’re not like your parents?”

“I’m more like my mother,” you reply. “Bigger on thinking before doing. Erika thinks while doing.”

“Reminds me of my younger brother,” Azusa nods.

>Schedule to take Rabbit team out as a reward, and meet with the History Club to strategise before meeting with the museums.

“You guys did well today,” you say, ruffling her hair. “I have to take you all out to celebrate.”

“Eh? When? Today?”

“Not today,” you shake your head. “Myself and the history club have a meeting with a pair of museums.”

“Museums? Anything interesting?”

“You’ll find out soon enough,” you answer, getting a pout from the girl. “For now though, I must leave.”

“We’re holding you to that!” Azusa promises.

While the rest of the club begins to filter out to do whatever they do on a Sunday, you catch the history club at the door.

“Ladies,” you greet them. “What do you say we grab a coffee and discuss how we’re going to deal with these museums?”

“That sounds like a great idea,” Caesar says. She turns and begins marching onto the high street. You follow her to a small cafe you think you’ve been to before.

A waitress comes over to take your orders and once she’s gone, you get down to business.

“Right, so we’re meeting with two different museums this afternoon, aren’t we?” You ask.

“Yep, two very big, important museums,” Caesar replies. “Who are run by important people, so we don’t want to annoy or offend them at all.”

“I sort of figured that out,” you nod. “Doesn’t hurt to be reminded though. It’s the Kure Maritime Museum, and Yūshūkan today, right?”

“Correct,” Erwin nods. “We’re meeting with Yūshūkan first, and Kure a bit later on.”

>”Anything I should know about either of them?”

“Well, both of them are reputable institutions, so we want to tread lightly with dealing with them,” Caesar says.

“Yūshūkan is way older though,” Saemonza warns. “Over a hundred years older.”

“By law, we’re also meant to hand in valuable finds like this as soon as we can,” Erwin adds. “And both museums will know that, and if they wanted to either could force the issue quickly.”

“Force it how?”

“By going through the courts,” Oryou replies. “They could force us to hand everything over to them in exchange for suitable compensation.”

“Courts take time though,” Saemonza muses. “So, we’d know and have time to do something in response.

“How likely are they to do that?” You ask,

“No idea,” Erwin shrugs. “But it’s probably not a good idea to anger them.”

“Yeah, staying on their safe side is probable our best bet.”

“I think Yūshūkan will be able to offer us more,” Caesar says. “Given they’re the first and oldest museum in Japan.”

“They’re liable to be more…difficult as well,” Erwin says. “Since you know, they can get away with it.”

“And Kure?”

“Well, they’ll be less formal, but they’re also smaller and less influential,” Erwin says. “So, what they offer in exchange will also be less.”

“Right, got it,” you nod before checking your watch. “We should get moving if we want to get to Ooarai on time.”

“Let’s,” Caesar nods. She stands, and the other three History Buffs stand with her. The five of you pay for your drinks and leave.

The carrier is in dock for the weekend, so getting into Ooarai is easy. The five of you walk down the gangway and head for the closest bus stop. Ten minutes later, you’re in Ooarai proper, headed towards another coffee shop for the meeting with Kure’s representative.

You spot them instantly. The suited man looking very out of place in what’s obviously meant to be a trendy place.

>Take the lead yourself. You’ve handled talking to politicians and this won’t be so different.

As the five of you approach, Caesar moves forward to take the lead. You subtly stop her, placing a hand on her leg. She looks over to you, and after a moment, lets you move ahead of her.

“You must be the representative from the Kure Maritime Museum?” You ask as you approach the table. “We’re the Ooarai History Club, it’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“Yes, I am,” the man confirms as he reaches for your hand. “Haru Todaka, a pleasure to meet you.”

“Fritz Hermann,” you reply. He lets go and shakes the hands of the other members of the history club.
He works his way though them, before finally reaching Oryou. She introduces herself then says: “I was not expecting the director’s son to be the one reaching out to us.”

“The museum is very interested in your recent find, so we’re taking all available steps to secure the items,” he says. “Please, take a seat.”

He gestures to the table he was sitting at in the corner of the Café. It already has several plates of different pastries and other baked goods.

The five of you sit, and after a moment to get comfortable, get down to business.

“So, I’ve read the report the five of you put out,” he begins. “Fascinating stuff really, who would have thought that such an interesting piece of history would be hidden away on a schoolship?”

“Well, they’re big ships Mr. Todaka,” you reply. “A lot of things can fall between the cracks.”

“Like those documents you found initially, right?”

“Exactly,” you nod. “Given how much stuff is on and in the schoolship, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s so much more to be found.”

“Though I’m sure what’s left is no where near as exciting as an actual treasure hunt, is it?” he replies.

“Well who knows?” Caesar says. “There’s plenty of Ooarai left to be explored.”

“Definitely!” He laughs. “Though that’s perhaps best left for later, lets get back to your finds, shall we? I have to admit, the museum and I would love to get our hands on it.”

“We appreciate the enthusiasm,” you reply. “I’d just like to know how would we be compensated?"

“Of course,” he nods. “Well, you’ll be happy to know that as a registered museum, we’re able to draw on government funds to compensate for finds like this. I’m sure you five know how it works – you get market value if the item has one plus a bonus for finding it and whatever cultural value it has.”

“How much cultural value do you think it has?” Caesar asks.

“Good question,” he smiles. “As budding historians why don’t you try and decide between yourselves.”

The five of you look among yourselves and the table goes silent for a moment before Erwin speaks.

“Well, it’s existence or not has been a hotly debated topic since the end of the war,” she says. “That plus it’s connection to the subjugation of the Phillipenes and the ah, modern day, probably make it pretty relevant.”

“I think I would agree with that assessment,” he smiles.

>“What are your plans for it?”

“To put on display,” he replies. “Our main interest in it is the story – how did it end up back in Japan? Because it was shuttled around by ships, and we have the resources to find out what ships were involved – if any where other than your schoolship.”

“From that I assume you know the story of the gold then right?”

“Of course! Fascinating stuff!” He nods. “I read the report you five put out and I managed to ah, read between the lines regarding the connections to today.”

“Good to hear,” Saemonza nods. “Are you planning to do anything with that?”

“We’d rather not annoy any mega-corporations,” he replies. “I’m sure you understand.”

“We had similar thoughts,” Oryou adds.

Ask if they have any idea of how much we can be compensated in numerical terms. We have multiple museums that are interested, and while this isn't the only factor in choosing, knowing this will make it easier to know if giving it to Kure is a wise choice.

“If that’s all?” You ask, slowly standing.

“Yes! Yes! Please don’t let me keep you! Budding historians like yourselves are probably very busy!” He shakes each of your hands in turn before you guys turn to leave. You make to leave some money on the table to pay but he stops you. “Already paid for,” he says. “Think of it as a thanks for the interesting article.”

“We will,” Caesar replies, and with a final nod, the five of you take your leave and begin the journey to the town hall where you’re meeting Yūshūkan.

“He’s a nice guy,” Erwin says as you board a bus. “Pretty credible interest and story as well.”

“Yeah I like him, and market rate for gold bars isn’t something to scoff at,” Caesar adds. “We won’t do badly out of helping them and historian to historian I like him.”

“Lets see how it goes with Yūshūkan first though,” you say. You arrive at the town hall where Yūshūkan has decided to meet you. You nod a hello to the mayor as he passes by, and a helpful secretary directs you to the meeting room.

An older woman is sitting at the table, and she rises as the five of you enter.

“The Ooarai historians?” She ask.

“That’s us,” you confirm. She gestures to the seats opposite her which the five of you take.

“Did you bring it with you?”

“We thought it best not to carry around such valuables after publicly admitting possession,” Caesar answers.

“Smart but frustrating,” she admits. “I shall cut to the chase. The acquisitions committee has deemed the items worth acquiring for their historical value so have began court proceedings to acquire them and compensate you appropriately. We simply must arrange the handover.”

>“What do we get in return?”

“The five of you will be paid what the court determines to be a fair amount based on the cultural importance and inherent value of the goods,” the lady, who still hasn’t given you here name, replies. “Additional the Museum is willing to extend an offer of an internship to each of you over this holiday. Since we pick well, this usually translates to jobs in the future as well once you graduate.”

“Of course,” you nod. You share a look with the girls and you’re certain none of them missed the fact that she hasn’t given you a figure either. “That’s an awful big risk you’re taking on us though isn’t it?”

“The talent acquisition board is satisfied that if your able to put together a report of the quality you already have you’ll be fine additions to the Museum,” she says. “I see no reason to question their judgment.”

>“What are your plans for it?”

“It will be displayed,” she replies immediately. “The bars themselves will form their own exhibit with excerpts from your report and our own research as to their history. They will likely be displayed either with the naval section or the Philippines section.”

“Good to know the plans are so thorough,” Oryou says.

“Yūshūkan is the best for a reason,” she says. You see the first sign of emotion as she smiles softly. “No other museum in Japan can compare.”

>Ask what she knows of the story

“I know the basics - I read your report, and was very impressed by the quality of the work,” she replies. “So were our head historians. I myself am not a historian however so I can’t comment any more than I found it a thoroughly interesting read.”

“That’s great,” you smile. “Glad you found it interesting.”

“Anyone could appreciate the work you did,” she replies.

Caesar makes a show of checking her watch. “I think it might be time for us to depart now.”

“Quite,” the lady replies, checking her own watch. “I believe it’s almost time for me to depart as well to catch my train.”

“We’ll call it here then,” you say as you stand. “Thank you for talking to us.”

“No, thank you for working with us,” she replies, taking your hand in a firm shake. “I shall send you all a copy of the agreement for your perusal. Any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me or the museum.”

“We won’t,” Erwin promises. The five of you shake hands with her before taking your leave. The five of you reconvene in the lobby to discuss once you see she’s taken her leave.

“That was…something,” Saemonza says. “Though what, it was I’m not exactly sure.”

“A rip off,” Oryou says. “They promised us exactly what Kure did but with internships tacked on.”

“They did?” You ask.

“Both mentioned the same reward – whatever the courts decide is worthwhile,” Caesar muses.

“So, the internships are the big difference,” Erwin says.

“Plus, how they approached us,” you add. “Kure’s rep wasn’t such a…dick.”

The five of you discuss it, and are gently directed to an unused office by the secretary sitting in the lobby. You discuss the two offers so far and the third you know is coming from the British Museum. The general consensus is no consensus, but an agreement to discuss it together at a later date.

“Agreed,” Caesar nods. The five of you make your way back to the ship. It’s a short trip and once there you split with the buffs.

>See Miho and the new student council to figure out what’s next on the agenda.

You text Miho and Anglerfish team to see if they’re free to chat about what’s next. Thankfully, all five of them are in the warehouse meaning you can talk to them now rather than having to arrange a meeting down the line when they’re all free.

You walk to the warehouse, and while it’s mostly dark, the lights are on in one location. You walk over, past the other tanks and find Anglerfish team and their tank the only one illuminated.

“Working on your tank?” you ask as you approach them.

“Sure are,” Miho laughs as she spots you. She’s standing on her cupola, and you can see the dirt on her face from the cleaning. The rest of Anglerfish team also emerges from inside or underneath the tank in similar states.

“I wanted to talk to you lot about what’s happening next,” you say. “Whenever you’re ready.”

“We’re almost done!” Yukari announces before promptly falling off the tank.

“I’m alright!” she groans. You help her up and the rest of Anglerfish team makes their way down the tank far more carefully, and you make sure to offer your hand to each of them which Hana, Saori, and Miho all accepting the help.

They take a minute to clean up before reconvening in the lounge area.

“Let’s talk tanks then, shall we?” You ask as they make themselves comfortable.

“Tanks are a good subject,” Yukari nods. “I like tanks.”

You laugh and offer her a fist which she happily bumps. “I meant the tanks we lost in the last match.”

“I knew that,” Yukari replies immediately, you pretend to believe her. “We lost seven tanks. A pair of Jumbos, shark team, Rabbit team’s M6, a JagdPanzer, a Challenger, and Anteater’s Chi-Nu.”

“That’s almost half of our frontline strength,” you frown. “As far as I know we have 6 tanks sitting in reserve?”

“Two are CVs, one is a Type 89, and one is a B1 Bis which are effectively useless,” she looks around as she says that, making sure Duck team isn’t around to hear her belittle their precious Type 89.

“So, we only have three useful tanks in reserve?” You ask, getting a nod in confirmation. “Well, at least we have a reserve, huh?”

“That still leaves us four tanks down, never mind the quality,” Miho says. “That also doesn’t consider the tanks that are operational but damaged.” She looks out to the warehouse, and you can’t help but cast an eye out to Werewolf who took several nasty hits in defence of the flag tank.

“Which other tanks were damaged?” You asked.

“Yours,” Hana says immediately. “Far worse than any other tank. The closest to it is Leopon’s Tiger which barely took a knock.”

“So, what can we do?” You ask.

“We can swap out three knocked out tanks for reserve tanks,” Mako mutters. “Then we should easily be able to repair the other four in time.”

“We couldn’t repair all six in time?” You ask.

“We’d either need outside help which is expensive, or all hands-on deck during practice which means no extra training,” Miho says.

“No point stopping ourselves falling apart physically only to fall apart because we’re rusty,” you muse. “Though how much damage will a week really do?”

“Maybe nothing, but why take the risk?” Miho counters. “We have a way to avoid it, so lets take it, all things considered, we’ll still end up relatively strong.”

“Sure,” you nod, “was just throwing the idea out there.”

“Shall we have a look at a list of the damaged tanks?” Miho asks. She’s handed some paper and a pen by Hana and quickly scribbles down the seven damaged tanks.

“Right, we have to prioritise which four to repair,” she says. “We’ll be fighting either Jatkosota or Blue Division, so lots of smaller, faster tanks but not much in the way of heavy armour.”

“And the tanks we’re using as replacements?” You ask.

“The Crusader, the StuG, and the M3s,” Miho replies. “The CVs are only useful as run arounds here or if we couldn’t get anything else into service. Same for the B1 and the Type-89.”

“Now, we just have to decide,” you say. “I hope Shark team will take a replacement…”

Pick 4 to repair, and 3 to replace and what with. (Crusader, StuG, M3 Lee)

M6 is a very capable tank, and we can't let our MVP go without MVP treatment. Mark IV because the crew might not be able/willing to operate another tank, and it's fine especially against a bunch of lights. Replacing the Jumbos because they're the likeliest to have similar internals to an M3 and a Crusader of the bunch, and replacing the Challenger because iirc, it only fired once every other turn, but with a powerful shot. That's a bit sub-optimally overkill against lost of small tanks. Replacing it with a Tank Destroyer will let the crew at least have a similar role to play that they are familiar with.

“I think Rabbit team is valuable enough in their tank that we repair it for them,” you say.

“Of course,” Miho smiles. “That’d be like asking you to leave Werewolf unrepair- ah, I forgot about Frederick.”

“I take your point,” you chuckle. Saori seems to realise something and begins to speak, but you cut her off. “Frederick is an odd tank. Doesn’t seem to work properly unless you know how to use him.”

“And who does know how to use him?” She asks.

“My crew, Erika. Probably Miho,” you reply. “On the note of odd, Shark team’s Mark IV?”

“Well, they’re not going to join us otherwise,” Miho frowns. “They have two guns though, and we’re against lighter tanks so at least they might be useful.”

“And maybe one of the Jumbos with the M3? They’re close in terms of controls! Right?” Saori adds.

“They are,” Mako confirms from the couch.

“And maybe the Challenger for the StuG?” Hana offers. “Both are tank destroyers.”

“Hippo team’s better suited for the StuG though – they commanded it before!” Yukari argues.

“They also own their tank,” you point out. “So, they might just refuse and attempt to repair it themselves.”

Miho considers it for a moment, before agreeing. “I would do the same.”

“So that’s three we’re helping to repair,” you say. “And the fourth?”

“Anteater?” Mako offers. “Their tank is unlike the other reserve tanks.”

“Anteater?” You ask Miho.

“Anteater,” she confirms, scribbling it down. “That’s everything then. We can get started on repairs tomorrow.

You stay to chat a little bit longer but they have plans for the evening, and even though you don’t have any in stone yet, you know what you want to be doing.

>Find the old Student Council and hang out with them.

As expected, all of them are free, and all of them are hanging out together. The only question is what to do with them.

>Absolutely nothing. They are doing nothing, you will do nothing with them.
>Take them out to eat. The win must be celebrated!
>Go out to do something. See a movie? Talk about the next match? (What?)

>Absolutely nothing. They are doing nothing, you will do nothing with them.

When you question them on what they’re doing, the answer is a resounding ‘nothing’.

Nothing? You text back. Or “Nothing”?

Literally nothing. Yuzu replies. It’s followed shortly afterwards by a picture of the other two laying about in their pyjamas. There’s no Yuzu but that’s probably because she took the picture.

Can I join you guys? Where are you? You ask.

My place. Anzu chips in. This is a girl’s night. Can you do gay best friend?

Why can’t I just come as is?

Because it’s a girls night. Yuzu replies.

^ is all Momo adds to it.

You take a moment to consider it and your alternatives which aren’t great in comparison. I’m not wearing any nail polish.

There are threats to do just that in the chat as you put away your phone and begin waking towards Anzu’s apartment which – now that you think about it – you haven’t been to before.

Like all walks on Ooarai, it’s a short one, but you end up in a part of town close to where the History Buffs reside with larger houses shared between several people rather than the apartments most other people have.

You reach the address you were given which looks like a typical Japanese townhouse.

You text them that you’ve arrived and a moment later, Anzu is at the door.

“Fritz,” she greets you. “No pyjamas?”

“I have an undershirt,” you reply. Anzu moves out of the way and closes the door behind you.

“Nice place,” you say as you look around.

“Who do you share it with?”

“No one,” she replies. “I have the entire thing to myself.”

“That sounds…pricey,” you reply.

“I like to think of it as my presidential palace,” Anzu shrugs. “I think I deserve it for my years of dedication to the ship.

“Of course, you do,” you chuckle.

You reach the living room where the other two are. Yuzu is on the sofa, and you dive towards her.

“Hey! Hey! Gay best friend!” She squeals as you grab her.

>“That would be literally 1984, and therefore I cannot comply.”
>“That can start in five minutes.”
>“You were serious about that?”

...what is this whole "Gay Best Friend" thing? At first I thought it was because this was a "girls' night", and so us attending would make Fritz a "girl", and since we're in a relationship with Yuzu, we would be her "gay best friend", but now that I write it out, not even that makes sense. What's this all about?

They’re saying that Fritz should play the role of the gay best friend, still as a guy, if he’s going to be hanging out with them during girl’s night

>“You were serious about that?”

“Why wouldn’t we be serious?” Anzu asks. “You have interrupted a sacred ritual by being here so you must participate or leave.”

“What really? Momo are you going to stand for this?”

“Don’t look at me,” she shrugs. “You’re the one that wanted to join us, so agree or forfeit your presence.”

“What?” You turn to Yuzu below you. “Come on? You’ll defend me, right?”

“These rules have been around longer than you have,” she giggles, playing with your hair.

“Fine,” you sigh.

>“That can start in five minutes.”

You resume your cuddling of Yuzu, despite the protests.

“Fritz!” She complains half-heartedly.

“Say that you want me to let go, and I’ll do it,” you reply, staring her down. She holds your gaze for a moment before wavering and relenting.

“Five minutes,” she allows.

“Hehe, sucker,” you chuckle, earning a huff from Yuzu, but she doesn’t stop playing with your hair.

Anzu returns, reclining in a massive armchair. “So, first match of the tournament done, how are we looking?”

“Well, we’ll be worse going into the next match given we can’t repair everything,” you reply. “But we’re against Jatkosota so hopefully, the few tanks we have to replace won’t hurt our qualitative advantage.”

“We might have a quantity advantage as well,” Yuzu muses. “They’re not the richest school in the world.”

“For once in our lives,” you complain.

“Make do,” Anzu shrugs. The clock ticks as the four of you discuss everything and nothing. Five minutes passes and you’re sure you’re about to be reminded, but thankfully, no one says a word.

You start to relax, content in your victory when Anzu abruptly stops talking and looks at you.

“Time to swing for the other team,” she orders. You just huff as Yuzu rolls you off her and the sofa.

Fin.
