BLEACH QUEST: SHINIGAMI SCHEMER #2{/b]
The year is 1866.
You are Hokkyokusei Danketsu, and you have been a Shinigami in the 5th Division for almost a year now. Despite the prodigal pace with which you became a shinigami, and a seated officer at that, to the general observer, it hasn’t seemed to translate to your success as a shinigami, with you still in your initial position of 20th Seat.
Your ‘girlfriend’, Nohara Tsukuya, who joined with you in the seat below your own, has outstripped you by now, rising to 15th Seat herself, despite you being stronger and more talented than her by her own admission.
Most of the rank-and-file attribute this perhaps to your Captain, Hirako Shinji, simply not paying attention to you or something similar, but you and the smarter ones in the Division know that it’s actually the complete opposite – Hirako-taicho simply recognises what kind of person you are, and knows you don’t particularly want to stand out wfor no reason, and so he’s let you do what you want at the bottom of the ranks, content for now that you’re simply in his Division.
However, you’re well aware that this nice arrangement won’t last forever.
You’ve used the time you’ve had being in a lower position well, focusing down and really working on your…
>Swordplay fundamentals (focusing on Zanjutsu)
>Relationship with your zanpakuto (learn more about Ryūkihei and his abilities)
>Spell repertoire (learning various kido)
>Hand to hand with Tsukuya (gain more hakuda experience)
>Speed (train hoho and shunpo)
>Fundamentals (increase general stats (which?))

You can pick multiple options here, but bear in mind the more you pick the less effective the training will be for each picked.

Welcome to Shinigami Schemer!
>What is this?
This is a quest set in the world of Bleach, currently 135 years before the first chapter takes place. Whether that canon story takes place as it did originally, goes drastically differently, or doesn’t occur at all is entirely up to you and your actions.
>Who are we?
You are Hokkyokusei Danketsu, a relatively new Shinigami in the 5th Division, under Captain Hirako Shinji. Character sheet and social links here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Mhb-DEn4oGZ1TSKONhDjoBgYcRziVzKZfe_9ALYzKlY/edit?usp=sharing
>Voting?
Depends on you. If it’s busy and votes are coming in quickly, I’ll generally give 15-20 minutes for voting, aiming for hourly updates. If it’s slow, I’ll let votes run for a few hours, perhaps overnight, and update whenever a majority is reached. If players have a preference for either option over the other, I’ll see what I can do to ensure the threads are always fast paced or always slower and take place over a long period.
>Dice?
We’ll be running off a 3d10 system, best of the first three linked posts to my posts calling for rolls. Don’t worry about rolling a critfail - I’ll always take the best of the first three linked. If people want me to take them, I’ll consider it, but I think opening up that system will cause more harm than good.
>Archive/Twitter?
https://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Shinigami%20Schemer%20Quest for all the previous threads, and my Twitter is @QMKWormmy for updates on run times.
>Questions?
Feel free to ask and I’ll answer best I can.

Sorry this took so long, QM curse hit hard, but I'm back now, and here to stay. This quest won't be dying prematurely, you have my word on that.

>Relationship with your zanpakuto (learn more about Ryūkihei and his abilities)
Great timing, I was starting to go into withdrawal.

+1
Gotta learn the zanpakuto
>>
>>5298973
>Relationship with your zanpakuto (learn more about Ryūkihei and his abilities)
>Spell repertoire (learning various kido)
This is a year's worth of training right? It would be shame for it to just be one thing.
Besides, lightning Kido translates into more effectiveness out of our Zanpakuto anyway.
>>
>Speed (train hoho and shunpo)
>Relationship with your zanpakuto (learn more about Ryūkihei and his abilities)
>Fundamentals (increase general stats (which?)) Stamina

We should probably advance our scheme potential and prepare for the inevitable black ops surveillance

Alright. Will begin writing in about 15 minutes.
>>
>>5298973
You spent most of the year working with Ryūkihei, and learning what you could do with it, only touching upon your other skills so much that you at least didn’t lose any knowledge or become rusty. It seemed the obvious choice to you - regardless of what you were good at, or what you lacked in, Ryūkihei represented your greatest advantage - it was the only thing you could use that was wholly yours, something no one else could replicate, and something only you would ever know the full extent of the abilities of.

You spent a lot of time in jinzen, both to figure out abilities with Ryūkihei himself, but also after a while simply to talk. After all, he was a part of you - pretty much the only thing in the world you could never betray you. It made sense that if there was anyone in the world that you could possibly trust, it would be him. It had to be.

Over time, you both discovered what Ryūkihei had meant by you controlling electricity in your domain, and expanded the range of things you could do with that control. You realised your ‘domain’ wasn’t your body, or even your general vicinity - it encompasses all that was completely ‘yours’, including, as you found with Tsukuya’s help, other people.
>>
>>5299022
The girl had reiterated time after time that she was yours and that would never change, and you found that fact to be true, discovering that you could control her bio-electricity as easily as your own. However, when you tried the same with Shin when you went to see him once, another person who you considered to be one of your tools, you found you couldn’t. At least for people, it seemed that they themselves had to willingly become yours for you to manipulate them, although…

Perhaps if you owned them legally? Or otherwise marked them or other items in a way that everyone agreed made them your own?

Questions for later.

You found that you could use your body’s bio-electricity to enhance your active speed and reflexes, or use it passively to have your body automatically respond to stimuli, but not both at the same time - there wasn’t enough electricity in your body for both. You could use kido to artificially overcharge your body to accomplish both, or increase the strength of one or the other, but it was painful to run the extra electricity through you, and it ran the risk of you accidentally electrocuting yourself. Perhaps with more medical knowledge, you could make it easier, more efficient somehow…

Then finally, more recently, you found you could even make electricity do things that it naturally couldn’t. You had been messing around with the lightning from Tsuzuri Raiden, seeing what shapes and forms you could make, when you formed it into a replica of yourself. You were shocked when the clone opened its eyes and looked back at you, and you realised mentally you could tell it what to do, the same way you commanded electricity. For now, the clones didn’t seem intelligent themselves, only responding to simple commands, but you wonder that in time, you’d be able to make clones completely indistinguishable from yourself.

Regardless, that was all irrelevant for now. It was time to relax, you think to yourself, even as you stare up at the familiar gates to your father’s compound.

You were home.

You…

You decide to sneak in. After all, you hadn’t told them you were coming, so you were sure it’d be a nice surprise. Using almost silent-shunpo, along with what now your favourite spell, Kyokkō, you scale the wall of the compound quietly and unseen. It’s not hard to do – your father believes himself enough of a deterrent that he doesn’t bother to hire guards, or any other form of security.
You enter the main building without any issues, making your way to the dining hall, where you know everyone would be by now. You spy inside, seeing your father sat down with your mother, and your two half-brothers. You take a breath, before dropping the spell and leaping into the room, one arm around each of your brother’s shoulders. “Happy birthday, both of ya!”
Ichimi, the one who was the spitting image of your father’s eyes lit up, his ever-present grin growing even wider as he realised what was happening. “Niisan! You came, hahaha!”
“Of course I did.” You smirk. “I might be a shinigami now, but I ain’t so busy to miss this. Ain’t that right, Konban?” You ask the other boy, him the spitting image of yourself, if not for his mismatched eyes.
“I’m… happy to see you.” He stated quietly and simply, you knowing that you wouldn’t get much else out of him, so you just pulled him in a little tighter, him clutching your arm as you did.
“I’ll bring Tsukuya-chan to see ya next time. She’s great, you’ll love her.” You were interrupted by a cough, and you look up to see your father staring at you, and your mother continuing eating as if nothing had happened, her eyes completely devoid of life.

You ignore your father for the moment, instead turning your head to look at your mother. “Hey, mum. How’ve you been?” She doesn’t respond at all, mindlessly continuing to eat, before your father clears his throat again, tapping the table with his fist. Instantly, she then turns, looking at you, taking a second to think about who you must be, before putting on an obviously fake motherly smile.

“Hello, Danketsu. I hope you have been well.” She then turns back to the meal, eyes back to that dead state, as you sigh. You hadn’t expected anything more than that, but… still. You pitied the state that the woman was in, even as you took notes on what you needed to do should you have to reduce Tsukuya to that sorry state too. Most of all, you supposed it was a shame Ichimi and Konban would have to grow up thinking that a mother like her was normal… but they were smart. They’d be fine.

“How long will you be staying, son?” Seinaru asked you, staring at you unblinkingly, to which you just shrugged.

>”I’ll be leaving soon, don’t worry.”

“Hey hey, I just got here.” You murmur, smirking back at your father. “Don’t tell me ya want me gone already? If I didn’t know any better, I’d think ya didn’t even like me, old man.”

“That’s prob’ly because he doesn’t, niisan.” Konban quietly says from beside you, and you put a hand over your heart as if you’d been struck.

“What? How could ya say such a thing? Oh, that breaks my heart, little brother. Say it ain’t so!” From your other side, Ichimi just laughs, while your father sighs, frustrated. He stands up, clapping his hands, making your mother stand instantly too, and then they both turn, walking out of the room.
You shrug, leaning back and crossing your hands behind your head, regarding the two boys while they turn to you, sparkles in your eyes. “So, how’s trainin’ with the old man? He treatin’ ya better than he did me?”
“Nope, hahaha!” Ichimi laughed, even as he went over his frustrations with your father. “It’s still really boring and easy, like you said. He made it a bit harder after you left a year ago, but both of us are still doing fine, hahaha!”

“He always says… that we shouldn’t listen to you, or turn out like you. He calls you defective.” Konban mutters, to which you respond by putting a hand on his head and rubbing his hair.

“Well, keep up the good work, you two, and don’t listen to him besides. If any o’ us’re defective, it’s him.” You say, staring ahead to where he had walked away.

The three of you are quiet, before Konban looks up at you again. “What’s it like being a shinigami, niisan?”

“It’s…”

“It’s harder than you think, y’know.” You say, looking down at the two of them. “It ain’t as simple as just being the strongest around. Ya gotta use your head too.” You grin, as you tap Ichimi’s head with your knuckles, causing the boy to laugh and swat your hand away. “But I’m sure ya’ll be able to figure that out.”

“But I don’t just mean in the sense you gotta be smart about who ya fight, and things like that. Ya gotta know when and where to use your power. Ya hafta know when the right time to show off what ya can do is, so that ya can keep people on their toes. But…”

You sigh, before smirking. “That’s for later. As far as trainin’ goes, the Academy’s even easier than training with the old man, and while hollows might look kinda scary, they ain’t special either. It the other people around ya that make things hard. After all, ya never know when some dumbass who thinks ya insulted him is gonna attack ya.”

Konban nods, having taken that all in. “Okay, niisan.”

“When can we go to the Academy, hahaha?” Ichimi whined while still laughing, looking at you expectantly, to which you shrug.

“Nothing stoppin’ ya from going now. Ya won’t get through as fast as I did, since you haven’t got all the training I did, but it’d be faster than waiting for the old man to let ya. Plus, it’d be way less borin’ than stickin’ around here.”

Konban looked over to Ichimi, and the other boy did the same, the ‘twins’ seemingly communicating without words, before Ichimi laughed and Konban smiling,

You patted both their heads and ruffled their hair, smiling yourself. “Don’t you worry about that for now, though. It’s your birthday, so let’s have some fun! Although… If ya do wanna go ahead and join the Academy any time soon, I’ve got a friend who can take care of ya, if ya want. He’ll be a second-year soon. Whaddaya think?”

“I think… It’d be helpful. Right, Ichimi?” Konban asked, quietly, to which Ichimi laughed.

“Yeah, you said it brother! Hahaha!” You smile, before extending your fist out to each of them.

“Then I’ll get that sorted for ya. But remember what I told ya, about how the world works-“

“Nothing is for free.” Konban interrupts, fist-bumping you.

“Yeah, it’s all give and take!” Ichimi finishes, fist bumping you as well, while you smirk.

“So you do listen to me huh, you little smartasses? I’m the one who annoys people like that, not you two.” You say, faux-exasperated.

“Well, someone has to irritate Dad while you’re not here.” Konban smiles again, while Ichimi laughs.

“We never got him to leave after speaking to him for like two minutes though, so you’re way better at it than us, hahaha!” You smirk, before laughing along with your brother. You sit with the ‘twins’, just talking and eating, genuinely enjoying yourself, while the sun sets and night falls.

I agree on that but so far it seems to be based on emotions such as Tsukuyas borderline Yandere devotion.
We need to inspire similar levels of devotion in subordinates or friends for this to work.

>we are a psycho trying to manipulate everyone
>our shikai is forcing us to build genuine connections instead
>shikai/bankai reflects the true nature of the shinigami wielding it

Danketsu at his deepest level just wants company and genuine relationships rather than the manipulations of his father...

It may be one way but we aren't tossing her away either.

Well, to be fair, he's already stated more than one time that he thought he'd be able to develop feelings for her (except he didn't), be it either by kissing or by having their first time.

It's definitely one-sided (he doesn't have many emotions at all) though he seems to have thought he'd feel something. That's a step in the right direction, at least.

I mean, i don't even want him to stop being a schemer. I just don't want tsukuya to go the way of the momo. Would be good to have someone at his side permanently, no matter who we betray.

You were having a good time, but…

Time to get back to business.

You ruffle Ichimi and Konban’s hair again as you stand, the two boys looking up at you as you do. “I’ve gotta go. I’ll come around to see ya again sometime soon though, and I’ll bring Tsukuya-chan like I said. Remember you two – even if the trainin’’s easy, make sure ya pay attention to it and remember it. Ya never know when what ya learnt will come in handy, y’know?”

“Okay, niisan.” Konban says while nodding, while Ichimi only laughs in response, making you smile, feeling that sensation you sometimes got when you were around these two, and only them.

“Good boys. I’ll see ya soon. If ya do go to the Academy soon, try not ta die before I get a chance to, alright?” You say with a wave, not waiting for a response before you leave the room, preparing to leave the compound, only to run into your father, who had seemingly been waiting.

“Was I right about you all along?” He asks, you tilting your head at the non-sequitur.

“Gonna have to clarify what ya mean by that. I don’t speak retard.”

The man grimaces in annoyance, before he continues. “You got through the Shin’ō Academy at a heretofore unseen pace, the only person in history to have done it faster being your own classmate. You imprinted on your asauchi in less than 24 hours, and a Captain offered you to join his Division multiple times before you took it, and was more than willing to wait for you to make your own decision about it. And yet, it’s been a year. You haven’t improved your rank at all. You spend your time slacking off, wasting your time with things like this, instead of actually improving yourself. You’re an utter disgrace, and an embarrassment.”

You stare at the man in disbelief, completely shocked that at some point in your life you actually thought of him as somewhat intelligent. “Genuine question here. Are you like, actually mentally impaired or something?”

He scowls at that, glaring at you threateningly. “What!?”

You ignore his anger, not scared of him in the least. “If you genuinely believe I’m still the 20th Seat because that’s the position I actually deserve, you’re so stupid it physically hurts to be related to you. Can’t you see that…”

>Hirako-taicho is letting me keep that position because I want it

“…I’m only in that seat because Hirako-taicho’s letting me be there? Do you really think he’d be content to let one of the only people he’s ever bothered to recruit directly from the Academy sit on their hands and waste their potential just like that, without a reason?” You scoff, turning away from the man. “He’s far more intelligent than that.”

You couldn’t see it, but your father was staring at you, his expression unreadable. “You think highly of him.”

“Of course I do.” You respond instantly. “He’s my Captain. He’s worthy of my respect.” Even if I can’t feel it.

Your father turns away, seemingly satisfied. “Fine. You may go.”

You scoff again at that. “You don’t control me, and you never have. I was free to leave whenever I wanted.” You spit with disdain as you turn back around, walking past him.

Your father says nothing as you leave, slamming the door shut behind you as you shunpo off, reflecting on what had just happened. It wasn’t like you to get riled up like that with hm, it wasn’t like you to get riled up… at all, really. But for better or for worse, seeing the state of your mother, and especially seeing your brothers… well, it brought things out of you that you didn’t normally experience.

You sigh. “And I’d been having such a good time, too…” You mutter.
You arrive back at the Division grounds, waving to the unseated officer manning the front gate. You walk through the grounds towards the training field, almost immediately feeling a familiar reiatsu coming towards you as you keep walking closer to them.

The moment you step onto the grass, you lean back, avoiding Tsukuya’s jumping kick as she flies past you, the girl quickly recovering and smiling at you as she settles into a fighting stance. You run your hand through your hair as you sigh. “What have I told ya about trainin’ so much with Mashiro? She’s teachin’ ya bad habits. I keep sayin’, go to Shihōin-taicho fer-“

“Good to see you too!” Tsukuya shouts, rushing forward with a punch.

You smirk, disappearing out of the way of Tsukuya’s punch with a short shunpo, sliding around behind her with your hands in your pockets. You bounce on the balls of your feet while she recovers, turning back to face you with a smirk on her face as well. She charges forward, and you continue to dance around her moves gracefully, the two of you looking like you were going through a choreographed routine more than a fight.

She tries to take out your legs with a low sweep, and you jump up to avoid it, pulling your knees up to your chest. Seeing an opportunity, she immediately then punches forward, but you avoid the blow by forming a reishi platform perpendicular to the ground and kicking off of it with a shunpo, sending yourself flying backwards.

Tsukuya responds to that instantly as well, running forwards at top speed before jumping towards you, her leg extended into a kick. “Tsukuya Kick!” She shouts, and you roll your eyes as she does. Kuna Mashiro really was a bad influence. You avoid the kick by kicking off another reishi platform, this one sending you straight into the ground, allowing Tsukuya to sail right over you without hitting you. She rolls to her feet again, back in a fighting stance, as you…

You keep letting her chase you, not seeing any need to draw your sword and make this into a proper spar. Every now and then, you let her catch up to you, letting her land a few glancing blows that looked a lot worse than they were. Tsukuya knew you too well to be fooled by that now, but it wasn’t to convince her anyway – it was for the few unseated officers around who, like your father, had yet to realise that you weren’t in your low seat down to a lack of ability.

She throws a punch at your face, but you dive and charge under it, throwing your arm over hers and trapping it under your armpit, while your other arm reaches underneath her leg. In one swift motion, you lift her up and throw her over your back before she can react, and she lands heavily, being momentarily winded.

You look down at her with your hands on your hips, as she glances up at you. “See? Mashiro’s style of fightin’ is way too straightforward. Makes it easy ta grapple ya like that, despite the fact that yer a better martial artist than I am. Shihōin-taicho is a better person to train with, ya know that.”

“And how am I gonna get her ta agree to that?” Tsukuya snapped back, the twang she was starting to pick up from you and Hirako-taicho ringing in your ears. “I ain’t- I mean, I’m not in her squad.”

You shrug.

“Have ya even bothered tryin’ ta ask her? We have met her before, remember? At the very least, Kisuke’d probably talk to ya if ya tried, and Shihōin-taicho seemed nice enough as well. You might as well give it a shot.”

The face she was making on the ground made it obvious that she hadn’t thought things through as simply as you had, and as you pick her up off of the ground, she looks away, both pouting and blushing. “You have a point… I guess.”

“You guess?” You ask, raising an eyebrow. “Come on, Tsukuya-chan. I always have a point, and ya know it.”

“Yes, yes, Dan-kun. You’re so much smarter than everyone else, it’s not like you haven’t said it a thousand times.” She quips, waving you away, before peeking over her shoulder at you with one eye, and then turning fully to face you, a warm smile on her face. “How were your little brothers? Did they have a good birthday?”

You think back to the time you spent with them, and you find yourself mirroring Tsukuya’s expression without even having to think about it. You guessed you were getting even better at feigning emotions, or something like that. “Yeah. I think they did.”
The two of you walk back to the barracks, Tsukuya content with listening to you talk about what happened while you were home, sans your little spat with your father. The next morning, you…

I don't want to leave you guys completely hanging though, so while I'm gone, I'd like to ask - what did you think of Danketsu's brothers, at least the little you saw of them? What sort of role do you think they'll play/what abilities do you think they'll have? Would Danketsu betray them too if it came down to it, or does even he have a soft spot for his family? For that matter, what kind of zanpakuto does his dad have? What's his dad really trying to do?

And of course, if you have any questions for me, feel free to ask. I think'll have time to answer any of those over the weekend at the very least.
>>
>>5306679
I think the brothers are interesting, they seem way more lively than Danketsu, but obviously have some similarities with him, personality-wise.
>>
>>5306679
I think he would not admit that he cares about his brothers not even to himself ,but if something bad would happen to them it would make him angry not visibly of course , he would
continue to show his usual (faint smile closed eyes) face but inside would furiously plan to make whomever hurt them suffer then die slowly and painfully.
As for his dad i think he is trying to be a "clandestine power" dude with all the wierd secret society bullshit and family/clan building selective breeding crap lol. For his sword im going with a zanpakuto that capitalizes on his kido similarly to danketsu (duh he is his dad).

You wake early, as usual, and head straight out to the training ground like normal. You lazily wave to the other early risers who were also getting in their morning workouts, as you draw your blade and prepared to practice. I’ve learnt most of what I can do with my shikai… So it’s time to stop neglecting everything else.

You begin to run through kata and different stances to begin, starting slow but steadily speeding up as you go. You slash at a training dummy near you, checking your strike to not cut right through, yet you still bite quite deeply into its side. As you continue, you notice some of the unseated officers approaching you, and as you turn, you smirk. “Wanna try yer luck?” You ask teasingly, resting Ryūkihei on your shoulder as you smirk at them.
At one’s nod, you smile wider, before readying yourself, and then charging at them with blinding speed. You take a few hours sparring with them, careful not to destroy them too hard. You were only meant to be 20th Seat, after all. You didn’t want to completely destroy their confidence.

You sit down in the middle of the training field, watching over the beaten officers, when you hear a whistle behind you, turning to see Hirako-taicho. “What happened here? It’s almost as if someone was showing off a little.”

You roll your eyes, smirking. “Didja want something from me, Captain?”

“Nah, I was just tryin’ ta think through this problem.” He approaches, before sitting down next to you. “I was gonna send Sosuke off on to lead a patrol, but he’s all sick and in bed.” That’s a lie. You think, knowing he wasn’t even trying to hide that it was one. “So I was wondering what to do. I need someone to lead, but no one’s coming to mind…” He glances over at you, and as you look at him, his intention is obvious. “Ya know anyone who could do it?”

>”Yeah, I can handle it.”
>”Tsukuya-chan could probably do it.”
>”Nah, I don’t know anyone. Sorry Captain.”

You roll your eyes again, choosing not to look at your Captain, but instead look straight ahead. “Why don’t ya just out an’ tell me ya finally want me to start doing some work around here? You know that I know that’s what you mean. Ya could just order me ta do it.”

Hirako-taicho smirks, before he responds to you. “I could, but it’s not like there’s any rush. It’s only been a year. We’ve got time. It’s up to you whether ya still want ta just take things easy… but I guess that ya don’t want ta, not anymore. At least not as easy as ya have been.”

“And what makes ya think that?”

“’Cause yer bored.” He responds instantly, turning to look at you. “Or am I wrong? I know I would be if I were you. And besides, wasn’t there somethin’ ya wanted to do? Ya can’t do it wallowing down at the bottom of the ranks.”

You shrug, not giving him the satisfaction of knowing that he was right on the money. “I dunno. My life’s been pretty cushy. There ain’t that much reason ta change things up… But who am I kiddin’. Yeah, fine. I’ll do it.”

Hirako-taicho nodded, before standing. He was about to leave, but something came to mind, and you decided to just out and ask. You knew that despite the fact that the two of you instinctively lied through your teeth constantly, your Captain valued honesty greatly. “Captain.”

“Yeah?” He asked, looking at you over his shoulder.

“When I first met the Captain Commander, he thought I was a Lieutenant based on just my reiatsu. So… I’m curious, since you came to me over Aizen… If you had a choice, right now… Who’d you make your vice? Sosuke, or me?”
“Sosuke.” He responded instantly, which surprised you – the fact that he had meant it was a question he’d considered himself. “And don’t get me wrong – you’re way more fun than that stick in the mud. But… I don’t need to watch you.” With that, he left, leaving you to…

You decide it’s probably for the best that you prepare for this patrol you’re going to be leading, since it’s the first time you’ll be running one yourself. You decide to go into the Division records, reading up on regular Rukongai patrol routes and history of the danger along them, as well as looking up who you would be patrolling with, their strengths, weaknesses, and personalities.

All of them going with you were of course more senior than you, and most of them were also higher seated than you were. You doubted any of them were stronger than you, although you could be wrong about that, but that was good – it meant that if any of them yapped up because they felt they were insulted you were leading and not them, you could bring them to heel and show them their place if need be.

There were five other shinigami in the squadron going to patrol – Momiji, the 10th Seat, and a kido specialist similar to yourself and your father, Inamaru Toyohisa, the 15th Seat and the most senior member of the squad, Sakaki Manabu, the 22nd Seat who had formerly been the 20th before you and Tsukuya had joined the Division, Anamatsu Kikyo, a seemingly unremarkable 17th Seat, and Urushima Yukiko, an unseated officer. You decided to…

You think it’d probably be a good idea to catch up with one of your mates for this patrol and tell them what’s going on ahead of time, so they’re not too confused when you show up instead of Aizen, and hopefully with the two of you be able to quash any dissent about you being the one to run the mission.

To that end, only two of the squadmates seem like a good choice to talk to now – Momiji, since she held the highest rank, or Toyohisa, since he was the most senior member. After some consideration, you decided to talk to Toyohisa for now – a man that old would respect the chain of command, and would likely go along with you leading the mission, even if he didn’t like it. If he’s survived this long, he’d likely see it for what it was – training for higher profile scenarios in the future.

That was also the reason you didn’t choose to speak to Momiji – because she wasn’t that much older or experienced than you, and therefore would probably have the exact opposite view of things than Toyohisa, and be insulted that you were taking charge, rather than her. From the little you knew of her, you also knew she had a certain… affection, for Aizen too… Hopefully that won’t be a problem. You think to yourself, even as you flag down Toyohisa, the man kneeling next to his zanpakuto, seemingly in jinzen.

“Yes? What is it… Hokkyokusei, was it? I need to prepare for a Rukongai patrol.” The old man asked you as his eyes snapped open. He seemed stern, but also rather fair. You didn’t think there would be any problems with him.

“Yeah, about that. Captain told me that Lieutenant Aizen’s sick, so he can’t lead the patrol. He said that I’m gonna do it instead.” You murmur, causing the man to stroke his beard and think in response.

“Is that so… Well, I suppose it was only a matter of time. You are destined for greater things than just 20th Seat, after all, after how fast you managed to become a shinigami.” He picked up his sword, tying it to his obi as standard. “I assume you came to find me so that if any of the others had any problems with your leadership, you’d have support?”

You nod, happy that this man seemed as sharp as you assumed he would be. “Yeah, exactly that.”

He nods in return. “Do not worry. I will assist you where I can.”

“Alright, then… Let’s go speak ta Momiji. She is the highest rank, after all. If both of ya are behind me, the others’ll have no choice but to fall in line.” You say, and Toyohisa nods in response.

“A sound idea. I believe Momiji-san would be in the mess hall around now, as she isn’t the earliest riser.” Toyohisa adds, and you smirk.

“Seriously?” You ask, running a hand through your hair. “Well, nothing for it then. Let’s go ruin her breakfast.”

The two of you quickly make your way to the cafeteria, and sure enough, Momiji is there, eating. It’d be impossible not to spot her with that striking two-tone hair. You still don’t understand how that could possibly be natural, and in such bizarre colours too. You boldly approach, Toyohisa trailing behind, and you push whoever it was she was speaking to out of the way as you sit down opposite her, causing her to glare at you. Out of the corner of your eye, you see Tsukuya raise an eyebrow.

“What do you want, loser?” She asks brusquely, and you recoil as if struck, acting as if she had crushed your feelings, while still keeping a smirk on your face that from that initial reaction she surely found infuriating.

“Now, now, Momiji-chan! Is that any way to speak to someone you’ve just met?” Her glare intensifies as she pushes her food away from her, before slamming the table with both fists.

“I don’t talk to failures who can’t get a single promotion in a year after being hailed as some kind of prodigy by fucking everyone! Now fuck off and let me eat in peace!”

>”Whoa there, Momiji. The Captain hears you talkin’ to yer leader like that and ya might get done for insubordination.”

You raise a hand behind your back, causing Tsukuya to stop in her tracks from where she had begun to storm over at Momiji’s tone. You kick back on your seat, closing your eyes and making a big show of sighing disappointedly as you begin to stand. “Ah, what a shame, Momiji-chan. I had a message for ya directly from Aizen-fukutaicho… I’ll have to tell him ya weren’t interested.”

“You what- Er, I mean… What did you just say?” Momiji shouts at first, jumping to her feet, but collects herself, sitting back down and attempting to look composed.

“I said Aizen wanted ta tell ya somethin’. Pretty simple stuff.” You mutter, shrugging, still feigning disappointment.

“And… what did he want to tell me?” She asks, almost pleadingly. She was so wrapped around his finger it was embarrassing… though you were one to talk about that subject, even you could see.

“Why should I tell you, especially after ya’ve been so rude ta me?” You reply, turning your head away and crossing your arms.

“Please! I’ll do anything-“

“Anythin’, ya say?” You cut her off, opening one eye and smirking at her. “Well, it just so happens that I’m gonna be leading a patrol we’re going on today. If you’re a good girl and behave durin’ that, I’ll tell ya. Deal?”

Momiji squirmed, realising what she had walked herself into and what she was agreeing to do, but for whatever reason, this made-up message from this man was more important to her than arguing the point, despite the vehemence she’d had for just talking to you considering your perceived inadequacy. “…Fine. But you have to tell me as soon as we’re done.”

“Yeah, sure, pleasure doin’ business with ya. Meet in the courtyard once ya’ve scarfed all that down, alright?” You wave, before turning and walking away, Toyohisa following you.

“I’m surprised that went so smoothly, considering how angry she seemed at the outset. However, I am curious… What is the message that Aizen-fukutaicho has for her?” He asks you as you leave the mess hall, and you smirk.

“There ain’t one.” You respond easily, and Toyohisa’s eyes widen slightly.

“And you aren’t afraid of her retaliation once she learns that that is the case?”

“Not particularly.”

“…You are a brave man, Hokkyokusei Danketsu.”

“Thanks, man.”

“So, what general strategies do we tend to use out in patrol in the Rukongai? Pretend I’m a completely green rookie who doesn’t know anythin’, and explain it simply ta me.” You ask Toyohisa once you’re away from the mess hall, finding a bench and sinking into it, throwing your elbows atop its backrest.

“It’s recommended to use a diamond formation if everyone on the squad is a combatant, or a T formation if there is a healer or otherwise not-combat focused member on the patrol. If there are multiple kido users, the Y formation is also used, although I find that even in those cases, it is rather rare.” Toyohisa answered, choosing not to sit, but rather to stand at attention.

“Other than that, it depends on the specifics of the mission and the strengths of those on it. An extermination mission would of course require differing tactics to a regular patrol. However… it shames me to say, but of late I have noticed that both junior and senior members of the squad have chosen to eschew group tactics in favour of simply rushing in with flashing blades, cutting down all before them. While effective, it is a brutish style, and one that breaks down as soon as they encounter anything more dangerous than a few hollows.”

“Right, right.” You mutter, as you pick at your ear. You look at the wax on your finger, before flicking it away, turning your gaze back to the old man. “But I notice that the formations ya mentioned were based on four-man groups. There are meant ta be six of us on patrol, no?”

The man nodded. “Indeed. Sending this many on patrol is… irregular. However, I would not worry – Hirako-taicho’s methods have always been far from orthodox, but there is always a reason for them, and they result in good more often than not.”

“Yeah well, it’s the not that I’m worried about.” You mutter again, thinking as to why Hirako-taicho might’ve done this.

You…

Hirako wouldn't have sent us for no reason. He's got some idea in that head of his.

He's testing our leadership abilities and adaptability.
We can't discount Aizien making trouble either.
For let's stick to the basic diamond formation with a Kido user in the middle of it and us as the outlier moving independently.

Having us as an outlier moving independently is actually a bad idea. How can we quickly relay orders to them in response to new situations if we aren't in the thick of it with them? Having an independent shinigami isn't a bad idea if they are a scout. But I don't feel like we should do something like that yet. We are doing our first patrol, lets keep everyone where we can see them.

Could it be leadership?

This was a squad with relatively prominent members of the Division, after all – Momiji was the rising star of the Division before yourself, and many people believed she was still after it seemed that you had been all talk. Then there was Toyohisa, old and wise enough to be talked about in the same breath as Kuchiki Ginrei-taicho, despite not being from a major clan or being anywhere near a captain.

The other three weren’t nearly as important, but that wasn’t the point – after all, Sakaki Manabu likely had a grudge against you specifically, having entered the Division, knocked him down two seats instantly that he had worked hard to earn, and then seemingly done nothing at all to deserve it. He hadn’t even clawed back up to 21st Seat yet.

Had Hirako-taicho picked those three specifically to be in your squad? Furthermore, the two others seemed pretty unremarkable in comparison – had he also selected them for that reason, to test you further, but not in how you would deal with clashing personalities or big egos – but simply to give you a larger squad to command, and therefore make your life harder?

You could see him doing something like that, to see what you could do in a roundabout way. And yet... you also knew that that might not be what he was getting at at all. What else could it be? Perhaps there was something in the Rukongai he wanted you to see. Maybe it had to do with the fact that this had been meant to be Aizen’s squad? After that statement he’d made about not having to ‘watch’ you, that also seemed like something it could be. There were so many things to consider.

You decide that it’s about…

>Showing you something in the Rukongai
>Aizen

I'd give everyone a read through, everyone's been updated. I'll have an update out some point tomorrow, and hopefully we'll have a full day of questing Sunday.

Are we going to be a 5 ft tall manlet forever?
How does aging work in soul society?
>>
>>5325021
Like normal, just much slower depending on your reiatsu. Also, in terms of Bleach characters, you aren't actually all that short - certainly on the shorter end, but apart from the really tall characters like Ichigo and Gin, everyone else is within a few inches of you.

damn you Japanese shortness.

Alright, so sorry about the really haphazard schedule we've had for this thread. It was the best I could do. However, from this Monday, my schedule will become far more structured and set in stone, so from then I'll be able to commit to a schedule for threads in the future.

Archive for this thread is up here https://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/2022/5298973/ and my twitter is @QMKWormmy, where I'll update you all on when we next run. It'll probably be the week after next, after I've had a week to properly feel out my new timetable. I hope to see you guys there,

See you then
