The low hum of the engines was calm, but not the imperial guards. You are Basillica “Vasily” Hagia, the lieutenant of the Baneblade squad and a proud Vostroyan Firstborn of the 625th Armored Division, 74th Company, Squad 20, squad call sign “Flowing Don.” It was just another normal day, you and your regiment were being transferred to another planet, where you did not know. So for now, your company was allowed some rest as the ship was in warp drive to the next destination.

As always, the messy affair of moving the regiment into the cruiser was long and arduous. As much as you wanted to rest, there was one final thing to be done. After equipping your mask and checking your cardinal and gold uniform, you walked down to the vehicle storage. Your crew stood in a neat line, and your cousin-sergeant was at the front.

“Commander on deck!” Your sergeant bellowed.

Your crew saluted, their uniform clean and proper as all Vostryans should have.

“At ease.” You said.

You gave a mental count of the crew and all were present.

“Cousin-Private Rivale Prokofiev.”

“Here.”

“Cousin-Lance Corporal Georgie Prokofiev.”

“Here, sir.”

“Cousin-Lance Corporal Gorbachev Prokofiev.”

“Here cousin.”

Rivale Prokofiev was the youngest member of your crew, he has bright blue eyes and messy blond hair, a lanky thing with a button nose and small ears, he was just beginning to grow his moustache.

Georgie Hagia was the second youngest, a quiet lad that had an expression of a stone, he was lean, quick, and deadly with a bayonet with an average look, not too handsome and not too ugly. He opted to grow a side burn.

Then there was Gorbachev Prokofiev, he was on the larger side, but like all Vostroyans that did not stop his duty, he always carried a soft expression with a pudgy face. They were the three gunners of your baneblade. Much fitting to his gentle eyes, he had a broom moustache, and it was always well kept. They were your gunners
>>
“Cousin- Private First Class Urban Karl.”

“Here.”

“Cousin-Private Durani Karl.”

“Here.”

“Cousin-Lance Corporal Doremi Karl.”

“Here.”

Urban Kar was also young and his moustache looked like a shaved rat, he was the second most fit. He was your scout should you and your squad needed to fill the infantry lines.

Durani Karl was quick witted, and clever, his face was that of a wild beast, slightly hooked and pointed nose, heavy jaw, and broad ears, it would snarl in battle. His use of ax bayonet attached to the stock was deadly in his hands.

Doremi Karl had half of his face covered in beard, despite being the third youngest, only noticeable feature was his small nose and observing blue eyes. They were your loaders.

“Cousin-Corporal Fornal Prokofiev.”

Fornal Prokofiev was your comms-operator. A seasoned corporal, his face was sunken, and his body was thin even underneath armor. He kept a light stubble, and the dark circle in his eyes were miserable to look at. A gloomy fellow, but he was a Vostroyan where it mattered.

“Cousin-Corporal Kalishnikov Prokofiev.”

“Here.”

Kalishnikov was the best marksman in your squad. He was the most fit in the squad, and the deadliest in hand to hand combat. Kalishnikov had a round shaped head, and a rugged look with a thick beard that could probably block a bolter round. He was your engineer in the squad.

“And finally, Cousin-Sergeant Sergei Prokofiev.”

“Here, cousin.”

Sergei was your sergeant and driver. He had a sharp chin and a pointed nose, his left ear was missing a piece of flesh, and his stern expression betrayed his friendliness.

These were your squads, your men, your brothers. After the headcount you dismiss your squad and go on your way. You proceed to

“Cousin, you’re not coming to eat?” Sergei said.

“I’ll be going to the church, enjoy yourselves cousin.”

“Ah, then I wish you a good night.”

You nodded. The small cathedral was mostly empty, as when your regiment loaded in it was around night time around the planet, and you worked until the next night to straighten everything out. As much as you wanted to sleep, it was by now a habit to pray before sleeping. You were used to the small space of the church, after all the cruiser was for war not for prayer. The destruction it brings was the holy duty after all.

You sat at the front bench, hands folded together as you looked up at the glorious golden statue of the holy God-Emperor. You wondered if by now your people were forgiven for their crime, of their betrayal. You dipped your head down and softly whisper, begging for his forgiveness and guidance in the upcoming battles. Once finished, you stand up and turn back, only to see Colonel Vyraskin.

“Sir.”

“At ease. You can sit.”

The Colonel sat next to you, the wrinkles of his skin scrunched up like old parchment. He closed his eyes but did not pray.

You chose to wait on the Colonel. After a minute or two, he opened his eyes. All of his hairs were whiter than the snow in Vostroya, and the machines implanted to his left eyes glowed like the fiery fury of Vostroyans. He turned his attention toward you, neither smiling nor frowning, a neutral visage.

“A patient man, as I heard.”

“I didn’t want to interrupt your thoughts, Sir.” You simply said.

“Silence is to be appreciated, that I know. If more of your age could know that.” The Colonel lightly chuckled. “It is good to see a young officer like you be devoted.”

“It was the Emperor’s gift that allowed me to be promoted. I can’t find a reason to not thank him every day.”
“Good man. Try to rest as well, the armored division will play a heavy role in our next war. You are the newest officer in the division, try to introduce yourself if you can to others.”

“Yes sir.”

The next morning cycle, the day went as normal. You and the company did some infantry exercises along with bayonet drills. The Flowing Don was in its pristine state as well. You were told it wasn’t long until the ship would be to its destination. The next thing on the list was meeting with the officers for a final review of the plan.

Inside the war room, it was a massive gathering of all the officers. The senior leaders stood at the platform. It was finally for your division after strategy reviews for the pilots, artillery, pilots, and infantry squads.

“-the 625th armored division will provide cover for the advancing infantry once the initial defense is cleared with the 33rd rapid assault company. Your mission is to kill any traitor heretics and assist the infantry squads to retake the surface level of the hive world, expect heavy armaments. After that, we’ll be making our way below to the subterranean levels of the hive. The upper level’s defense force can’t hold on for much longer so we have to break through fast.”

You relayed the same mission for your squad. With a few days left, your regiment as usual allowed for few days of rest. As for you…

Your squad, who was not so happy about this grumbled save for Rivale, Durani, and Sergei. With how dangerous the mission seemed, it was best to brush up on the infantry tactics. Emperor willing, you prayed for the Flowing Don to survive, but you knew on a battlefield anything could happen. You pop out of the cover and take down the target, and lay down suppressive fire as your loaders move up front.

Suppressive fire, move, suppressive fire, move, suppressive fire, move. Platoon sergeants from the 33rd Rapid Assault Company were more than happy to help you out. You would have preferred practice on the baneblade but the cruiser barely had space for such practices. But after discussing with other platoon sergeants on certain scenarios, you felt more confident than before. Most of the practices were light live-fire exercises on spare targets, you didn’t want to tire your men too much after all.

“Thank you for agreeing for this exercise, sergeant.”

“No problems sir, a little more practice never hurts anyone.”

“A breakthrough of hive city always isn’t. Especially the subterranean levels.” You said tiredly. “I’m not sure if the baneblades can make their ways far down there.”

“Either way the baneblades will be a great assistance.” The sergeant said heflty. “Emperor guide you, sir.”

“You as well, sergeant.”

With practice being done, you went to rest in your quarters after you dismissed your men. Inside the church, you prayed, thanking the Emperor for another safe day passing and for the gellar field to not falter. Soon, you would reach Geneburn V, and enter the depths of the hive world. In about three days, you and your squad would be deployed into battle.

[Trait unlocked: The faithful]
[There will be special dialogue available when regarding the Cult Imperialis. Your interaction with the members of the Ecclesiarchy is more favorable.]

The xenos were xenos, simple as that. The rebels, the traitors, were merely men that turned their backs on the imperium. But heretics, the worst traitors there are, they were the ones to look out for. Not because of their tactics or power, but because of their influence. You heard of stories of men falling, infected by the sweet words of chaos. You wouldn’t be them. Death was preferable. You knelt on the ground in front of the golden statue.

“God-Emperor, all things that’s right. I kneel before your power and glory. I swear upon my heart that my faith will be your sword against your enemies, my faith be your shield for your people. My faith will be the bulwark against terror. My faith will be my armor. My faith will be my offering to you, and the enemies purged in your glory.”

You continued to pray, late into the night. You heard the hum of the engine, footsteps, hints of whispers. Then, warmth, soft hands that cupped your cheeks. You heard no sounds but your own prayer. You opened your eyes, the church… it was filled with people, and Commissar Basilone who was kneeling next to you.

“Ah, Commissar Basilone, how may I help you?” You said politely.

“Lieutenant, do you know how long you have been praying?” His voice was firm, gravely, but not with reprimanding tone, more of subtle awe if you had to guess.

“The usual amount, Commissar, an hour.”

“Lieutenant, it has been a week.”

“But… I was told we would be arriving in three days.”

The Commissar nodded. “That was the expected arrival. But we are a few days late. It is too much of a coincidence that the same day you awake from your prayer that we arrive to the planet.”

“I-”

The alarm for imminent landing rang. No words were spoken, it was time. With neither fatigue nor hunger, you dove into the Flowing Don, and quietly it felt the rhythm of war flow.
>>

And thus, the invasion began. The baneblade company was left aside with the artillery that was softening the hive. It was always a joy to watch the artillery decimate the traitors. Soon, the walls fell with a thunderous crack. As plan, the baneblade advanced. You were met with a raining las fire, ballistics, and explosives, all easily flung away with The Flowing Don’s armor.

“All guns, open fire.”

The barrels roared, and anything that were aimed was eviscerated into pieces.

“You know it’s weird, why are clearing out some heretics in a hive? Our last planet was a manufactorum for titans, aren’t our regiment a bit too qualified for this job?” Rivale said.

Georgie focused on the targets.

“We go where we’re ordered, cousin.” Gorbachev said. “Save talking for later.”

Though Rivale had a point… that thought was quickly gone when you saw reinforcements coming in. The initial assault has yet to end, and until then thinking did not matter, fighting did. Among many targets, the first that needed to be taken out was-

“Urban, degree 78 and 05, aim for that transport fire when ready!”

“Clear!” Durani shouted.

“ON THE WAY!”

The baneblade shook gently, and outside a great explosion bloomed. The bodies, rather, the body parts, flew in every direction. Heads, arms, legs, and just about anything else, all scattered in a fiery spectacle. Of course, there were still remaining enemies. You grabbed your vox-comm.

“Stay behind us sergeant. We’ll take the rest out.”

“Understood.”

Along with the twin bolters and other guns, nothing was left that wasn’t whole. Even the heavy bolter was no match for the demolisher cannon.

“Take out that shield was well.” You commanded.

The banded scraps of iron were ripped to pieces by the concentrated fire of the autocannons and the twin linked heavy bolters.

“Clear, sir.’

“Advance.”

You hear the crackle of bone and metal underneath the baneblade. By now, save for Rivale, everyone was used to the sound. Foes after foes, your baneblade crushed them all.

“Advance to the rendezvous point.”

“Enemy contact!”

The enemies arrived. You first took out the.

You saw the portable autocannons rolling in, and the vanguards were suicide bombers. Those mad sons of bitches, and the bombs on them were an abomination of fuses and metal scraps.

“Gunners concentrate fire on the bombers!”

The twin-linked heavy bolters fired, and once the bullet hit the bomb, it set off a chain reaction. The very street rumbled and even some buildings were on the verge of crumbling. After that, it was simply advancing by giving fire support when the sergeant would ask for it. Aside that, they were nothing but free targets.

There was silence in the streets, save for the distant echoes of las fire and explosions. You hate the quiet, there was something out there waiting for an opportunity. Yet… nothing had happened. You and the infantry squad came out unscathed and arrived at the central square, you saw the usual cathedral for the local worship as well.

“Fornal, patch me to the captain.”

The vox-comms fizzled, then you heard the voice on the other side.

“This is the Flowing Don, Sir. We have arrived at our objective, the central square is ours and the 33rd Rapid Assault Company is securing it. We are also waiting on the upper hive to come support as well.”

“Good work. Have the area secured and provide support. Wait on others then we will advance further in. Out.”

“Yes Sir, out.”

You put the comms back. The mission was too easy, then again they were just heretics without the support of daemons. Considering the hive’s export being mechanical parts and general goods, there was little worry about you now supposed.

“Alright, take a break everyone, if the infantry needs help with some moving thing around go and help them.”

You walked toward the cathedral, while it was a brief prayer you still gave your thanks to the Emperor. A good amount of minutes passed, as you prepared to leave you heard a commotion. Then lasfire, you quickly ran toward your baneblade but as you ran, you saw…

“GENESTEALERS!”

The las fire whizzed by your head, all chaos was let loose and by the time you got on your baneblade the genestealers were already swarming.

“ALL GUNS OPEN FIRE!”

Your gunners and loaders began to immediately shoot at anything that didn’t wear red. Ugly sons of bitches they were. You even got to your hatch and manned the heavy-rapid lasgun and unloaded everything it had. Their ambush was initially a success, but you and your brothers in arms were Vostroyans. There would be no breaking the line.

“THEY’RE SWARMING IN!”

“FLAMERS NOW!”

The abberators advanced, and so did the genestealers with flamers. You heard the cries of your brothers. So your men replied in kind, the great flamers cleansed the xenos in great holy flame. Their disgusting cries mixed with the smell of charred flesh, but that wasn’t enough.

“NOW!”

The baneblade roared as it fired its main gun. Despite the countless kills, the genestealers were still swarming out like maggots from this corpse of a hive city. The filthy xenos would swarm to match the quality of the Vostroyans.

“Turn the baneblade around and give some cover for our brothers!”

Without question, Sergei turned the Flowing Don around. You lost a few guns but the firepower was still superior to theirs. The battle became fiercer, but when the xenos got into the church for cover, something in you… boiled. An anger in you that kneaded and bubbled in your guts.

“You… you dare enter the holy place. YOU FILTHY XENOS!”

The controlled fire of heavy-rapid lasgun became a full on auto fire. No discipline on the trigger, no sound mind to aim correctly. Your mind was in a state of… anger. You pressed your finger on the trigger more than you were taught. Despite the effort, they kept crawling out over and over, not without a rest.

“Sir!”

The platoon sergeant of the 33rd shouted from below.

“That building over there and there, it looks like that’s where they’re pouring out from! We need suppressive fire on the left and come with us as a shield on the right, my boys and I will get from the right!”

You nodded.

“Urban, degree -55.2 and 05, get that building demolished and the one on -30.87! Gunners, lay suppressive fire on the left side!.”

You continued your fire on the right, as you advanced from the left. On the left were more guardsmen to compensate the lack of cover.

“Fornal what are the others reporting!”

“Same thing sir, the genestealers are ambushing!” Fornal said. “We have no report from-”

There was a familiar grimace on Fornal.

“THE UPPER HIVE IS COMPROMISED! I REPEAT THE UPPER HIVE IS COMPROMISED!”

A cold sludge sloshed in your stomach, but it was soon burned by your zeal.

“Worry after clearing this area first!”

The battle continued to rage on, the guardsmen were able to enter the cathedral. The problem was, there seemed to be no shortage of the cultists. The left formation were getting gunned down while the right were stopped in their advance. Then you heard the rumble of an engines. It was not a baneblade, but it was faster and had auto cannons. This was not some scrapped vehicle, it was manufactorum made, and they were coming in like a pack of beasts, they were escorting another infantry transportation. Emperor… it’s unending.

>Tell the sergeant and the others to pull back as you act as the rear guard.
>Get half the guns on the vehicle and half on the infantry, it will be a risky move as the push will be slower which would mean more infantry rush.
>Get one gun to focus, and advance the baneblade, crush them with the treads and metal.

The situation was dire. But not the worst you have been in. It didn’t matter now, if you died, you die. If you live, you fight another day to die.

“GORBACHEV FIRE ON THE VEHICLES, CAUSE MUCH DAMAGE AS POSSIBLE!, REST OF THE GUNS FIRE FORWARD, ADVANCE! ADVANCE!”

There was no hesitation in them. Flowing Don advanced, and you heard the righteous music of crushing flesh and metal. The infantry followed behind you, and moved forward. The line was not held, but it was being expanded. But by the time the enemies began to scurry, the left flank were basically decimated. Only few survived. In the brief moment of respite you got out of the baneblade and had the men formed.

“Brothers, I received news that the upper hive is compromised and we lost communications with the rest of the divisions.”

The men whispered in hushed fury.

“Well, we’re down right fucked.” The sergeant said.

The men laughed, you couldn’t help but to smile.

“We will advance to the rendezvous point and Emperor-willing, we will find the survivors. My baneblade will be in the front, the wounded will be closest. Any questions?”

The men, covered and soot and blood did not reply.

“Good, we move out in five.”

You knelt in the cathedral, and in the brief respite you made a prayer. You prayed that the Emperor was watching over, and everyone makes out safe. You jogged out of the cathedral and return to Flowing Don. Its familiar heat and cramped seat was in a way comforting. The rumbling hum, the clicks of machines. The baneblade advanced, and for a while, all was quite on the front.

“Anything Fornal?”

“No.” Fornal snarled in frustration. “Nothing.”

“Wasn’t the Sisters of Battle with us?” Georgie said.

“They are.” You said tiredly. “But they’re known for going off on their own and doing their own thing. They believe action should be made instead of speaking… which makes sense but not tactically. I don’t know where they are or what they are doing.”

The streets were quite, and you knew there would be an amish soon. There were few, but not big enough to stop, but deadly enough to have men on their edge. You were being watched, and you knew damn well. Yet… you managed to reach the rendezvou point, an open field and a gate that led to the upper hive.

“-can anyone hear me?”

“Fornal!”

You took the comm-vox.

“This is Lieutenant Basillica of the Vostroyan Firstborn 625th Armored Division, 74th Company, Squad 20, squad call sign Flowing Don, attached with the 33rd Rapid Assault Company.”

“Throne, it’s good to hear your voice. This is Commissar Basilone. Were you able to reach other divisions?”

“No, Commissar. We are in the rendezvou point and awaiting orders. What does the Colonel say?”

“He’s dead.”

You lower your head and squeeze your eyes shut, only briefly.

“Understood, what is your order Commissar?”

“We will arrive and meet you there. Until then, survive.”

“Yes, Commissar. Emperor protects.”

“Emperor protects.”

You exited and gave them the news, and they went to work. Fortifications, placing heavy duty barricades, you were going to make the perfect siege-proof area. Flowing Don would be at the front and take the brunt of the damage. Most likely, you were going to be targeted and die. If you place it in the rear, you wouldn’t but that mean most of the damage would be falling into the fortifications and that wouldn’t last long.

Frontlines here we go
>>
With Flowing Don in front, the guns were ready. There was an agonizing silence as you waited. Ten minutes, half an hour, then about two hours passed. Then, a single thud echoed and the gate shook. Another thud, and the gate rattled, then another, and one final thud, and the tall gate fell. The hordes of cultists came pouring through. No commands were needed as the las fire rained the Emperor’s fury. The gunners were doing well and the loaders worked with Sergei to find a suitable place to fire as to not be an unmoving target.

“Fornal do you have anything?”

“None!”

“Damn it!”

You exited the interior and used the mounted the heavy-rapid lasgun. Formal was important for communications, Sergei as well. When surrounded by an enemy there was little you could do, you might as well use the gun. You begin to fire at the unending hordes, one by one. Disgusting freaks that they are, they never ceased to be disgusting.

“LEFT FLANK IS BEING OVERRUN I REPEAT LEFT FLANK!”

“RIGHT FLANK CANNOT HANDLE THE ASSAULT I REPEAT!”

You had to make a decision, until the hordes begin to climb on the baneblade despite the guns that eviscerated them. You needed to move, either left or right would be fine. But that meant damning the men who were behind you. Either you drew you shaska now, or move. There was one another option as well…

There were too much forces, left and right everyone was beginning to swarm in. The platoon commander was dead and you didn’t get any word from the platoon sergeant either. The amount of guardsmen were beginning to dwindle, and your arm burned as you swung your shaska toward any enemies that got too close to the hatch.

“Sir we’re told to retreat and rendezvous at secondary point!”

“RELAY TO ALL UNITS OF THE SITUATION HERE!” You screamed. “FIRE SMOKE WHEN READY WE NEED TO RETREAT! SERGEI BACK UP SLOWLY! GUNNERS FOCUS FIRE ON THE FRONT!”

The Flowing Don roared, and the smoke bloomed. As the guns of the baneblade unleashed its firepower the guardsmen behind you made a slow retreat. Then you heard a bolter fire, more and more from above. Then they land in front of the men, one right on the surface of Flowing Don. They were here, the Sisters of Battle. You saw surges of flames from all sides decimated the incoming cultists. Power swords cut through the unholy abominations and chainswords decapitated the tainted flesh of your enemies.

It was an awe-inspiring sight, but that only lasted for so long. They were in your line of sight as well as other guardsmen. You waved your arms.

“CEASE FIRE! CEASE FIRE! I REPEAT, CEASE FIRE! WE’RE GOING TO HIT THEM!”

Throne! You heard about their serious lack of communication but are they this mute? They could’ve been shot! The reinforcements decimated the cultists and soon the grounds were clear. Just like that, two dozens of them finished them all. You would have been angry, filled with rage boiling in your guts. But now… you were tired. You slipped back into the interior.

“Is it over?” Sergei said tiredly.

“Yes, for now.”

You let your muscles relax and a yawn escaped from your lips. The Emperor’s work was never finished but for now, in this brief respite, you would have peace.
