/qst/ - Quests

The year is 1374 DR. Sixteen years have passed since the Time of Troubles, when the gods were made humble, and forced to wander the Realms as mortals. With the ascension of the mad god Cyric, Prince of Lies, and the recent return of the tyrant god Bane, Lord of Darkness, the future of Faerûn seems increasingly uncertain. It falls to bold individuals who possess an abundance of cunning, might, and determination to shape the future... should they be up to the challenge.

'Temple' is a word that summons forth a collection of memories. You recall the days during which you trained as a priestess of Lolth, goddess of chaos and darkness and spiders, the matriarch of the Ilythiiri race. The Spider Queen is a demanding deity, and her followers in turn must spend every moment vigorously working to gain her favor, be it through combat, tributes, or intrigues. Capricious to the extreme, to serve Lolth as a member of her clergy is to devote the whole of one's being to becoming a judge, a juror, an executioner that carries out her will in exchange for a fraction of her power.

It should come as no surprise that you spectacularly failed every single one of your lessons. Even as a girl, you were inclined to follow your own lead. Feverishly doing the bidding of a higher power in the vain hope that they would elevate you at their whim held no appeal for you at a time when you were beginning to realize that you possessed a rare talent for athletics and skill-at-arms. Mother made certain to hit you twice as often after you had declared that you would be dropping your theology lessons to fit more exercises into your schedule.

That is not to say that you did not pray to Lolth out of fearful obeisance. The gods of the Realms are present and active, and the Weaver of Chaos is more than capable of destroying you where you stand should she so desire. Fortunately for you, they are not omniscient - you can only assume that her attention has not turned toward you recently, or that she has yet to pass judgement on your actions. Still, it would be prudent to seek the protection of another divinity soon, even a surfacer god, lest you be smitten before you can confront your sisters.

The temple of Mielikki - or the 'Evergreen Hall' as this specific one is known - is a serene verdant chamber that prominently displays a great tree surrounded by a tiered garden, which itself is bordered by a pool of tranquil water. On the grasses kneel lay worshippers, mostly human women with an agrestic aura about them, quietly meditating on the precepts of their faith.

Leaning against the tree is a rugged woman in rustic dress, her russet hair deliberately allowed to grow wild. Her muted elven features suggest that she is a half-breed, or at least of partial elven lineage. She sizes you up as as you approach, speaking at you with what is possibly the most irritating provincial accent that has ever assailed your ears, which differs significantly from the one shared by most of the locals.

"Ya must be Sindi?" She asks, continuing before you can offer a reply. "Name's Willow, High Ranger around these parts. Ilanis's been talkin' about'cha a whole lot." You grit your teeth and grumble to yourself. It should have been a given that the girl would gossip, but you've scarcely been in Everlund one entire day. What was there to talk about? "If she says yer all right, 's good 'nuff fer me. Now what cen I do fer ya?"

It is a given that you came here to discuss business and take on the challenge of eradicating the werebeasts infesting Silverwood, the nearby forest. But before that, there was something else you wanted to discuss...

You may choose no more than three.
>What do you think about how the council is handling the werebeast problem?
>I'm curious about the goddess. Who is Mielikki, and what is she about?
>High Ranger sounds like an important title. Where are all of the other priests?
>Pretend for a moment that I want to commune with Mielikki. How would I?
>I seek my people. Could you tell me where I can find the followers of Eilistraee?
>[Write-in.]

I was going to compile a pastebin with all of the rules, but it's going to have to wait a while longer.

"I am looking for my people." The idea had been stewing in your brain since the hideous anthropomorphic rodent mentioned it to you. If Eilistraee and her followers were real, then surely they would be willing to provide the assistance that you need. Ilanis, Amaranth, both defied every ingrained expectation that you harbored and encouraged you to reconsider your entire worldview through their actions.

And yet, it was no substitute for being among those who shared your language, your heritage. Much in the same way that humans possess a shared 'humanity' despite their multitude of differences, or the surface elves collectively know themselves to be one people, to you there is only one Ilythiiri. Driven into the belly of the Underdark by the traitors countless ages ago, subject to its cruelties for millennia, growing splendid and mighty because of your hardships. Those not of your lineage could never fully grasp your culture. "I need to find the followers of Eilistraee."

Willow seemed to understand the your desire to seek out kindred souls. She nods along with your words and creases her brow. "I'd holp ye if I could, Sindi. They an' us all promised ta share the Silverwood, an' Lady Silverhair's folk were good ta us." That is an odd choice of words. You interject, requesting further clarification. "Were? Why not now?"

"Ain't seen 'em in two years," she sights out, smiling bitterly. "We was all fightin' the cult of Malar together, way back. Black-bloods hit 'em real hard, an' we ain't seen hide nor hair of 'em in a long while. Sorry." To hope that there would not be a complication of some kind would be naïve. It is a relief to know that your people are out there somewhere, although you conclude that finding them is a lost cause so long as the black-blooded creatures are infesting the region.

"They chose to be allies of Mielikki, then?" You ask, receiving a nod in turn. Just what is the nature of this power that Eilistraee's faithful would willingly align themselves with? How significantly did her doctrine diverge from the divine law of the only goddess you have ever been permitted to worship for so long? "There is a goddess where I am from. Is yours... different?"

Willow's face lights up as the conversation drifts to the topic of her faith. "Don' much know what'cha mean by that, lady. If yer axin' what the Forest Queen is all 'bout, I'd be right happy ta tell ya'." You lean in, which she takes as an expression of interest. Adopting a more formal inflection, she transitions into an enthused rigmarole that you surmise to be well-practiced.

"Our Lady of the Forest is goddess of the woods, an' all the life in 'em. She teaches that wilds're good, an' how folk can live as one with nature." Willow slaps her hand against the trunk of the tree behind her. "We guard the trees an' plant new ones, an' wallop anyone that hunts down critters just fer sport, like the black-bloods."

Mielikki's dogma sounds vaguely familiar. Her ways resemble the lessons contained within the literature that you consumed just last night, The Pretty Princess of Myth Drannor. "And you feed the forest friends, and talk with them?" You inquire, raising an eyebrow. "Like the 'squirrels?'" Willow rubs the back of her neck and stares you down whilst sporting an expression of deep concern. "Wha-?" Clearing her throat, she musters a smile, she places a hand on your shoulder and gives it a gentle squeeze, an act which catches you by surprise. "We sure do, sweetheart. We sure do."
>>
>>5310315
Carefully, you grasp her forearm and push her away. "You are hunting the werebeasts, then. What does the council do?" You ask, studying her reaction. Willow snorts and spits a gob of mucus at the grass in front of her feet, a telling gesture if there ever was one. "Half of 'em's got this wild idea of smokin' out the black-bloods with fire. Like doin' that ain't gonna do more harm than good. Only reason they ain't gone through with it is 'cuz Cywir got the High Captain ta vote against it, bless that sweet man."

She folds her arms and shrugs. "Fer right now... ain't an awful lot they can do. The black-bloods only come out at night, an' sendin' the army out after dark's just gonna get those folks killed. The Keeper said he was gonna step up the patrols ta keep the roads safe, but his heart ain't really in it, if you catch my meanin'." You feel that you have learned enough about Brandt to draw your own conclusions from her words.

"I plan on hunting the black-bloods," you mention to her. Willow grins from ear to ear, regarding you with newfound respect. "Thought'cha might be interested. Called back my boys an' girls ta see if they found anythin' while stalking the Silverwood. In 'bout four or five days, we're all gonna get together an' call a new hunt with anyone decides they're gonna come with. Figure this is our last chance ta hit 'em where it hurts afore the council calls another vote."

She waggles her index finger at you, looking you in the eyes. "Got a nice reward set aside for whoever brings me the head of their high priest. How 'bout it?" It is a given that you will be partaking in the hunt. You have already decided as much. The question is how you'd prefer to approach the situation.

"I will be here. How many hunters will be with us?" Working with the Mielikkians diminished your chances of claiming the most valuable prize by slaying the high priest of Malar, but that was fine by you. It has been over twenty years since you last went on a proper hunt, exterminating umber hulks from the caverns surrounding your family's holdings. The prospect was refreshing, and you must admit that you were intrigued by the idea of working with the High Ranger and her forest friends - which may or may not include a genuine dragon.

"'bout thirty of my finest. An' whichever adventurin'-types we can scrape up from the Stag."

"And how many werebeasts are there?"

Willow's frown speaks volumes. She is afraid that a straight answer will deter you from participating, until her honesty gets the better of her. "No tellin'. All it takes is one bite, an' the curse'll spread." That's right. Greycastle explained that the curse is contagious. Determining an exact number while the cult is actively working to infect others would be nigh impossible. Perchance that is why the council is willing to resort to desperate measures.

"Not a problem," you assure her. You have fought in wars before, and even commanded on several occasions. This would not be the first bloody attrition fight that you have become entangled in. The total extirpation of the black-bloods, you reasoned, was not a goal that could be accomplished in a single day. "I can do it."

Willow grins and punches your shoulder softly. You assume that there is an intention behind this otherwise inexplicable surface-dweller behavior, though the truth eludes you. "Much appreciated. Anythin' else on your mind?" Folding your arms, you consider her question and shake your head. Nothing in particular came to you. Moments like this made you curse your poor affinity for idle conversation. "I should go," you murmur as she waves you off.

Where to?

I'm not super good with DND mechanics, but perhaps we could ask around for something that makes us resistant to infection or increases our (or our companions) chance of resisting being infected by the wererats?
Possibly that might be more in the Cleric department, but still.

I imagine that anyone who catches it just will just tell the clerics there and they'll be put on a list of who needs remove curse cast on them. Can't imagine that the Mielikkians doing this wouldn't have the means to cure it if they're gathering a host to beat everyone up like this.
>>
Well I really shouldn't make it sound so simple. IIRC the first thing to do is take Wolfsbane and pass the required check. If that fails, you need remove disease or heal. If you don't have a cleric with a high enough level for that, you then just throw them in a jail during a full moon and cast remove curse on them. And THEN they need to pass a check. This is all assuming 3.5e lycanthropy rules as it's currently 1374 DR, but no idea how closely this system will follow to this quest.

Since it's common knowledge in-character, curses and various other afflictions can be cured by priests and mages that have some experience under their belt... often for a hefty donation to their cause. They may be willing to waive the fee if you're working together with them or they like you, so Jez will either need to start saving or start simping if she decides to stick with the adventurer lifestyle, where such things are an occupational hazard.

Twice have you visited the Bell Market, though both occasions were business-oriented. Today, you intend to spend on self-indulgence, and prepare for future adventures. You exchange the Evergreen Hall's tranquil reverence of nature for the hustle and bustle of city life fixed around the oversized bell at Everlund's heart. The fragrance of aromatic spice wafts through the air, blending seamlessly with the smell of fresh produce which in turn accentuates the vibrant colors of dyed fabrics swaying with the breeze.

A number of goods on display are prohibitively expensive, even with the wealth you have accrued, but you are able to pick out some goods which are both desirable and affordable for you. What shall you purchase?

That sums up to 242 which leaves us with 327 - 242 = 105 GP. I think this might be on the higher end of expenses, but Jez strikes me as quite practical minded and realizes it's better to have a cash reserve. Plus if she survives, she will have money. At this moment the only way I see her justifying makeup is if it's for camoflauge, like batman has beneath his mask?

Importantly, I think she would set aside a tenth of her money for church healing/tithe, practical minded that she is. She also strikes me as someone who doesn't count on the inherent goodness of a "church", like say a LG crusader might.

A tenth of her current money is a further 32.7 GP, even if it's just mentally set aside, that leaves her pretty low on reserves.

We have our upcoming dance with one of the city's most powerful men attending, it will probably be wise to make a good impression and be dressed appropriately. The robe is just to have some casual clothes to change into when relaxing if our dress isn't clean.

For adventuring I could see us needing all of these, so far it hasn't seemed like we will be in dire need of healing but this was the tutorial adventure and we probably shouldn't base how hard things will get off of that, plus healing is always useful in the future and it pays to have it on hand. Shame we can't afford the bless weapon oil without cutting out the potions or a bunch of the luxury items and clothing, but I'd rather be alive and have appropriate things for our dance than an easier time overcoming some tough foes. Don't really care about the acid as a ranged weapon, but it could be good in case we need to open locks or something.

Yes, this is a decision motivated purely by need - it's not as though you want to adorn yourself in all of the gaudy surfacer fabrics on display. The absurdity of such a thought is not to be understated.

You pick out a few articles that catch your eye. The toga, a white garment suitable for casual occasions made of an exotic substance known as 'linen,' which is both comfortable and tough, imported from the far-distant land called Chessenta. A simplistic robe of spun wool colored by an expensive purple dye, ideal for relaxing in should you feel inclined to stay indoors someday. Most prominent is a short dress of red silk, lovingly shipped from southern nation of Calimshan, to be worn in the unlikely event that you end up in a formal setting. It would expose the web of scars that mar your body, though the worst are on your back, and your hair is long enough to conceal those.

As you fret over your presentation - with purely pragmatic motives in mind - the memory of the stench you accumulated over the dismal tenday you spent surviving in the wild Undardark fights its way to the forefront of your mind. In silent acknowledgement, you decide to purchase a perfume to put the nagging thought to rest. Of the fragrances on offer, two fit both your tastes and your economic circumstances.

One is Ocean Mist, a pleasant though implacable smell meant to remind of a geographical phenomenon unique to the surface. The other is Night Spice, a piquant aroma that the merchant assures you will make the person of your choice eager to 'gobble you up.' While understandably leery of inviting surface-dwellers to commit cannibalism, you ultimately dismiss it as some odd vernacular and decide to take both of them.

Moving on to more adventurer-centric products, you stock up on the essentials. Potions of Healing, should you become wounded. Antitoxin, a niche but critical item to have on hand, and vials of acid should you ever need to dissolve a lock or surprise a foe. A decrepit dwarf woman aggressively propositions you as you fill a new backpack with hardtack, jerky, and an unfamiliar baked good referred to as 'koo-kees,' and walks away from the encounter with fewer teeth. You ask after the sequel to the Pretty Princess of Myth Drannor - alas, the author passed away before she could finish it. Allegedly, the manuscript sits in the collection of a wealthy book collector in the city of Calimport.

That should be everything. Or is it? Calling out to you is a clean-shaven gnomish man dressed in finery, marketing some sort of metal undergarment. "What ho! You there, good lady! You seem like an agile warrior. Am I wrong? I have the protection you need at a reasonable rate, fresh from Aurora's Emporium in Westgate!"

You take stock of his inventory. Chain mail corsets. Oversized war belts that leave the chest bare. Armored plates that protect the loins... and only the loins. "Stupid," you hiss, staring daggers at him. "This can't work." He beams, extending his palms toward you as he goes on. "Oh, but it does. That much I can promise you. Did you know that weapons are statistically more likely to only hit the metal bits? Some scientists even postulate that monsters are genetically predisposed to behave in this manner. I actually have a pamphlet right here referencing the rich literature on the subject, actually-"

Half of the words he used were beyond your comprehension, but they sounded intelligent. You pinch the bridge of your nose and sigh. "I will buy something. Please, just... stop talking," you groan, much to his delight. Perusing his wares, you pick out something to protect your bosom, together with complementary groin armor. It is... minimal enough that you should be able to comfortably wear it beneath your new toga.

Buyer's remorse weighs heavily on your shoulders as you conclude your business at the Bell Market for today. You should know better than anyone that this skimpy 'armor' affords your body no real protection... or does it? At any rate, you have an obligation that needs fulfilling, and it does you no good to delay it any further.

Your return to the Dreaming Dragon is filled with surprises. For one, it seems that Ilanis has assembled an entire orchestra - strings, brass, percussion and winds, an ensemble of instrumentalists setting up next to the stage. A crew of gnomish engineers work diligently on an elaborate machine partially covered by a tarp, hauling parts in and out of the tavern at regular intervals. Overseeing the operation is Ilanis, who rubs her palms together as she issues a litany of directives without pause.

Spotting you, she rushes over and grabs you by the wrist, whisking you off before you can open your mouth to address her. "Sindi! There you are! Guess what I got? Go on, guess!" Pulling you into the seclusion of her home, she releases you and wanders off, returning seconds later with a basket in hand, rifling through it.

You clear your throat and speak. "I-" the girl cuts you off, shoving a flamboyant tangle of fabric into your arms. "It just came in from Waterdeep. Pretty nice, huh? I really need you to put this on and come down here with the rest of us so we can start the rehearsal." You blink, speaking at her. "Wait-" a plea that falls on deaf ears. She is already gone.

With the Dark Fantasy in hand, you descend dressed in a white mesh dance costume, taking your place on the stage as Ilanis speaks at the ensemble. You shut your eyes and breath deeply, considering how far-reaching the consequences of your upcoming performance will be for the first time. All eyes will be on you this time, and as an outsider, your actions will color Everlund's perception of not only you, but your people as well. Whatever you convey here is the light under which both they and you will be seen.

What is it that you want to express with this dance?
>Power. Rapid blade twirling and explosive acrobatics. I want everyone to witness the might of the Ilythiiri, and to understand what my people are proud of.
>Sensuality. Dramatic sweeping motions and delicate footwork. The surface world must know that despite our reputation, our culture holds beauty as an ideal.
>Expertise. Real combat techniques and difficult technical movements. Now is the time to demonstrate the value of the ancient traditions handed down to me.

Eh, we aren't here to seduce the guildmaster, he's one of those cultist folks or something, as much as we may be a sensitive soul, it is best we impress those watching by showing not only our skill at dancing but our martial spirit. Plus, this choice may reflect a stat we end up using for the dance potentially, and strength is our best stat.

"Sindi?"

Lifting the lids of your eyes, you are faced with the sight of Ilanis and her assembled band looking toward you inquisitively. "We're all wondering what kind of music you want." She turns to them, nodding firmly. "I asked one of the best troupes in the city to come play for us, so I think they can do anything!" 'Anything,' she says. If these individuals possessed a talent with instruments comparable to your weapon skill, then that may just be the case.

What is it that you want the audience to see? Your heart is the one to answer. That infernal work of literature, The Pretty Princess of Myth Drannor, ignited an amorphous warmth in your breast. There is a certain uncomplicated beauty contained within the pages of that book which stirred emotions that you did not even realize you had. Is it possible to make others experience this peculiar phenomenon?

The next few days are spent working together with the musicians, doing your utmost to explain what it is you want from them in their language. This approach is not without its challenges, as the specifications you issue are at once unhelpfully vague and unusually specific. On the second day they return with pages of sheet music, a classic from farther south as they explain, demonstrating the piece to you. Satisfied, you begin choreographing movements to suit it, expediating the process by pulling from familiar routines. The entire production is a bit slapdash, in your view, though the crowd is unlikely to recognize this.

Ilanis is more than happy to cover your living expenses up to the day of the show. You are no scholar, but it is evident that she is deeply invested in your success. In all likelihood, something of significance to her - the Dreaming Dragon itself? - is dependent on the result of this venture. At the least, she alluded to as much the other day, albeit unintentionally.

Mentally and physically, your project is incredibly demanding. You labor day and night until the morning of Rupert Tenpenny's scheduled visit to the Dreaming Dragon Tavern, which is scheduled for this evening. As you must be in top condition for tonight, exerting yourself is out of the question, but you must to do something if you are to pass the time.

>I will go for a walk to clear my mind. Everlund is a sizable city, there must be something I've yet to explore.
>Conventional wisdom dictates that I arrive early, to assist with final preparations, and I shall do just that.
>It is best if I meditate in silence until the hour for me to take the stage arrives.
>There is something else I would like to do. (Write-in.)

We've practiced enough to be proficient in this dance of ours I think, better to take some time to relax. Plus, there is more to a city than just the major sites.
>>
>>5316267
Have a decent sized breakfast, but don't pig out. Meditate until shortly before the performance, and then limber up with some stretches before we go on stage.
>>
>>5316293
I guess that really depends on all of (You). Much like a real campaign of D&D, the story of this quest is largely meant to be emergent. You could have Jez be an itinerant monster killer with no friends, or try to become an important person here in Everlund, or hunt for the rare manuscript of a certain book, or maybe make a few bad choices and die horribly. The only static goal is the one paired with the first prompt, which is trying to defeat her sisters.

If we meet them and people think that Jezyrene can redeem any of them (or if it's even worth the attempt), then you can definitely try. As for whether she'll succeed, who knows?
>>
>>5316519
I want to build a positive reputation and earn more coin as a monster-hunter and dancer here, establish a home base, and then go on a trip to get that lost Pretty Princess sequel once we're established. Just putting that out there for other anons to consider and weigh in!
>>
>>5316267
>It is best if I meditate in silence until the hour for me to take the stage arrives.
I like the almost jedi like imagery of emptying yourself of emotions before committing to the outpouring of emotion that is art.
>>5316523
I'd like to see Jez lead or join a group/adventuring group/mercenary group, which fits nicely with building a positive reputation. Getting to a bigger city eventually would be a big part of that. Also, do our utmost to befriend/flatter a dragon, but that's very, very highlevel I imagine.
What's the closest major metropole to where we are?
>>
>>5316523
I don't really have any specific goals beyond achieving the goal stated in the first choice, otherwise I'm kind of just playing it by ear. I feel we'll develop more sophisticated wants and goals as we go along that will pull us into natural arcs. That being said, as much as I enjoy the children's book memes, I don't want to overplay it too much, as our knowledge of the language develops we'll probably realise it was just a children's story. Wouldn't mind going on an adventure or two into the wider world regardless though.
>>
>>5316530
We'll get to a geography lesson on the wider world as soon as Jez has the good sense to buy a map, but we are in the North, which is sort of a frontier region. The Silver Marches is a little more developed, as it is a confederacy with three major city-states.

The capital is Silverymoon, which is a center of magic and learning that exports books and furniture and depends heavily on imports of food, clothing, and what have you.

Sundabar is a fortress with a large dwarf population geared mostly toward manufacturing and resource extraction. As one might expect, it is also very dependent on imports of food.

We are in Everlund, which is a city of commerce. Goods from the south (food, clothing, wine) come in, and goods from the Silver Marches (fur, books, precious metals) go south. It is the second largest city situated on the only major trade route that leads south.
>>
>>5316519
It’s less about Jez redeeming her sisters (although that would be an acceptable outcome) and more about her establishing her fabulousness over them, to the point where their minions go, “Holy fuck, she got that good from three days on the surface? Why the hell am I still living in a cave taking shit from these bitches? At least there seems to be at least 99.91 percent less snake whip beatings here, maybe I should give surface living a shot.”

As for long term goals, besides beating her sisters and possibly her mother, after meeting Eilistraee‘s followers, I’d like to do some adventuring around, maybe visit all those far off places we heard of, like Myth Drannor, Neverwinter, Waterdeep, and possibly even Calimshan, if we’re still a Pretty Princess head. After that, ruining our sisters lives and making them flee from Menzoberranzan to live as failures, maybe come back and take over the Speaker of the Town job from that dwarf who runs The Stag at Bay.
>>
>>5316605
Oh, almost forgot a couple of bullet points on the list…

>Write a book about our experiences as a children’s book
>Bring surface fashion to the Drow so they have other colors than various shades of black, dark red, and purple

And if we’re really, REALLY going for overachieving/stupid funny…

>Challenge Lolth… to a dance off.

Remaining idle does you no good. The thought of being the main act of an upcoming show makes you incomprehensibly restless. Donning your toga, you find your way to the Dreaming Dragon, making sure to pull the hood of your cloak over your head before stepping out to shield your eyes from the dawn's hateful radiance. Your eyes are growing accustomed to the surface light, though you refuse to risk scorching them a second time.

Through an open doorway you spy Ilanis, standing on the tips of her toes at the zenith of a comedically tall ladder. Meticulously, she works at attaching crystals to the ceiling using silken cords. Judiciously, you remain quiet and behold the scene with a sense of morbid curiosity. Is she ignorant of the danger that she has placed herself in, or does she simply have no regard for the risk? Seemingly content, she descends to inspect her work, at last becoming aware of your presence.

"Woah there, lady! Don't sneak up on me like that!" The girl wipes her brow, her gaze returning to her handiwork. "Why are you here, anyway? We don't start until tonight." Folding your arms, you speak at her while slowly pacing around the venue. "I am restless. I thought you would have something for me." Some light activity could do wonders to ease your nerves.

Ilanis shrugs, looking at the bulky device the gnomish engineers finished installing the other day. You hadn't the slightest as to its purpose, but the girl promised that it was pivotal to your performance and said no more. "You're right on time! I just need to finish moving all of the crystals around and we're all done. Why don't you get on the ladder? That way I can see how it looks from down here."
>>
>>5318766
The hours fly by as you and Ilanis spend the morning rearranging the Dreaming Dragon's lighting, altering the atmosphere bit-by-bit. When you are finished, the mood of the tavern has transitioned from glistering and wondrous to something more dimly lit and intimate. Once the last crystal is set, Ilanis sits you down and forces you to partake of a meal which she refers to as 'brunch.'

It would be a grand understatement to label Ilanis as chatty. She is the most talkative individual that you have ever met, freely sharing any thought that pops into her head. The girl tells you of her parents - that her mother was the kindest woman, passing tragically shortly before her father vanished. She also goes on to tell you that her father was a mage of rare talent who used to adventure when she was still a girl, and how Amaranth apprenticed under him.

The girl gabs for an indeterminate amount of time, given pause only when the ensemble begins filing in to set up for the evening. "Oh!" She leaps up from her chair, rubbing her palms together anxiously. "It's time for us to get ready. Your outfit's in my room. I- I'll call you down when it's time for you to go!"
>>
>>5318774
You adjust your costume a second time and stretch, looking out at the dimming evening sky through the window of the girl's bedroom. Over the duration of an hour and a half, guests trickle into the Dreaming Dragon until the telltale jabbering of a large crowd can be heard over a convivial piece of music emanating from the tavern downstairs. By your reckoning, Ilanis is allowing them some time to settle in and mingle.

Just as you are beginning to relax, she barges in, appearing flush and disheveled. Procuring a comb and a hand mirror, she hurriedly brushes her hair, taking labored breaths as she talks. "Whew. Th- this is all really stressful to me? Usually we don't have more than a hundred people in here, maybe!" She gulps, looking to you for some affirmation that she does not find, returning her attention to her reflection. "It's time! For you, I mean," she squeaks, waggling her hand vaguely at you.

Breathing deeply, you make your descent and behold your audience for tonight. From end to end, the building is filled with folk from their myriad of species, all well-to-do individuals by the look of the finery they sport. Everlund's upper-crust is here, chatting away and imbibing in drink as they await tonight's main attraction. Unless you are mistaken, there are hundreds... perchance just under a thousand people in attendance of this event. Even when you visited the cities, you never demonstrated your skill to more than a few dozen. This... is an unexpected development.

What is it that you are thinking right now?
>This is what I was born to do.
>I am speechless. Awed. So many people wish to see me?
>One, a thousand, the audience matters not. I remain calm and follow the routine.

Beholding the multitude of spectators, you are struck dumb. The only assemblies of similar magnitude that you have ever laid eyes on prior were during wartime. Though a commander of troops, you were still a face to be lost in the crowd then. And now, you demand more attention than you have held in your life prior. Tonight, a veritable army has gathered to witness you, and your art. This could be the only opportunity you have to perform for so many. You resolve to make it your finest. Swallowing a gob of spit, you summon up your courage and take the stage.

Dark Fantasy in hand, you stand upright and scan the mass for familiar faces. None turn up - you are surrounded by a throng of uncountable strangers. Behind you, concealed from sight is Ilanis, adjusting dials and levers on the odd device. The Dreaming Dragon gradates from dim to dark, its sole source of gentle luminosity hanging directly above you, guaranteeing that your actions will be emphasized to the exclusion of all else. Glancing at the conductor, the two of you share a knowing look and nod in unison.

It begins.

The piece opens softly with winds and strings which carry a tender, almost sorrowful timbre across the building. On cue, you synchronize your movements with the tempo and rely on your core to gently cut wide crescents through the air, unhurriedly twirling your sword as it changes hands once, twice, three times. Shifting your weight onto one leg, you spin yourself clockwise at a speed that appears leisurely whilst angling the blade of your weapon diagonally, the glint of its metal creating a mystifying spiral pattern. These slow exertions appear unchallenging at face, but such legato, controlled motions are taxing enough to make your muscles burn in protest, an unwelcome reminder of your advancing age.

The crescendo of strings and gradual introduction of brass prompts you to commence the next phase of the routine. The music adopts a brighter, more optimistic tone, and your gesticulations by extension grow more energetic. Elegantly, you weave your weapon encircling your legs, under your arms, around your waist and behind you back without nicking yourself, actions which appear superficially effortless to those ignorant of how many times you have cut yourself attempting them as a girl. Everything culminates in your most technically impressive showing yet. You whirl the Dark Fantasy about your shoulder and release it from your grasp, continuing your dance unimpeded as it rotates around your neck without your intervention as if possessed - a trick of inertia and gravity that provokes widespread whispering in the audience.

The clash of hand cymbals serves to usher in the final portion of the show as the brass and strings brilliantly come together to create a resounding empyrean atmosphere. You believe yourself to be a sensitive soul, and have chosen to represent the ideal of beauty with this dance. It is to be now or never. Like the rupturing of a dam, your inhibitions break down as you allow the most raw expression of the fundament of your being to burst forth and consume you.

Emotion takes hold as you slip into a trance. Seizing the moment, you maneuver the sword about your body at such a speed that it looks to be mere flickers of light to the naked eye. Mightily, you leap across the stage, refusing to allow the spectacle to abate even while in the air. Heralding the end is a rolling decrescendo, during which you land on one foot and toss the Dark Fantasy into the air, performing a slow pirouette while extending a hand that effortlessly grasps its handle mid-descent as all falls silent.

Returning to the center stage, you bow deeply, a gesture that is met by uproarious applause.

>Orb Alur Mastery - You deepen your understanding of the Superior Spider style. +3 bonus to dodge hazards or perform acrobatics. Commanding Presence becomes Performing Combatant. Sword Dance becomes Whirlwind Attack.
>Luth Alur Style - You draw on your diverse training to expand your arsenal. Permanently increase Perception by 4. +3 bonus to hit targets using projectile weapons. Commanding Presence becomes Dazzling Display. You learn Shot on the Run.

Going for increasing intellect to synergize with Luth Alur's bonus to perception. With the increased perception we can preemptively avoid hazards and traps that the +3 bonus from Orb Alur would've helped with, plus all the standard benefits of perception.

It is also pretty important to have a ranged weapon that we are proficient and good with, particularly as we may be facing foes that transmit a curse via melee attacks. DnD martial types tend to get overshadowed by spellcasters, but when we have only ourselves to rely upon for the moment we need a good ranged weapon to fight flying foes, or harass foes that are superior to us in melee before they close, or be able to fight while retreating while in groups.

The sneaky-shooty types of drow stick in my mind just as much as the hit-things types, at least in terms of mechanical presence.

Plus I just like the idea of being more perceptive in general and seeing more when the QM relays what we perceive in the updates, and the intellect goes with us being a cultured soul.

Going with the Agility to increase our Defense, it is more valuable than one extra health or slightly more Power, we haven't had trouble with running out of Power so far. Plus I'm not sure whether ranged weapons key off of strength or agility.

Light returns to the Dreaming Dragon, claps and cheers giving way to a deluge of discussion as the audience turns away from you to trade words with one another. Your senses have sharpened. You feel more aware, focused. And, something more - you are... braver? Ilanis steps onto the stage and nods firmly, placing her hand on your shoulder, jostling you around. So enraptured are you by the thrill of the moment that you do not even care to push her away. "I knew it! From the first time I saw you, I knew you were this good!" Both of you stare absentmindedly at the crowd until she releases you. "Oh! I should introduce you to Master Tenpenny!"

Keeping pace with the girl, you ascend a staircase leading to a secluded balcony with a magnificent view of the stage. Seated at the end of a lengthy rectangular table is a balding, corpulent halfling adorned in deluxe business attire. So rotund is he that his proportions seem almost fictional when observed up close. There is no stigma against being portly in your society - on the contrary, only a handful of the most influential Ilythiiri can afford to grow fat - but the man before you is less than half your height and weighs at least three times as much as you.

Flanking him are two people of a familiar sort. At his right is a sly-looking woman with umber colored skin wearing a fine suit, her dark hair cut short. The cold smirk and sadistic glint in her eye telegraphs that she is a lifetaker, though you see no weapons on her person. As for the left, a burly man wearing suspenders and a dress shirt that is tight enough to highlight his overdeveloped musculature sits hunched over the table, the greenish tint to his skin suggesting he is of orcish descent. You have seen this type far too many times in the past - a brute addicted to a cocktail of performance-enhancing drugs that spends all of their time lifting weights, foregoing a more rounded training regimen.
>>
>>5321498
"Master Tenpenny!" Ilanis bows politely, gently nudging you forward to be presented like a well-raised racing lizard. "This is Sindiira. We just want to thank you for stopping by. What did you think of the show?" The halfling reaches into his coat pocket, fishing out a cigar which he places gingerly in his mouth. A miniscule flame appears at the tip of the woman's index finger, which she uses to set the rolled tobacco alight. Tenpenny speaks at her with an offensive, croaking voice with the texture of sandpaper.

"It was O-KAY. I rate it five stars," he states, waggling the cigar in your direction. Ilanis smiles from ear-to-ear, completely elated. "Solid five outta' ten," he corrects, blowing a cloud of smoke in your direction that sends the girl into a coughing fit. More surface-dweller vernacular that you fail to grasp. Five is half of ten. Is he saying that your performance was only half-decent?

"That's fine!" Exclaims Ilanis, inhaling deeply as the coughing subsides. "We're always trying to improve. I- I know! We'll do better next time! Everything will be twice as good!" She shoots you a hysterical look, hope and fright painted over her visage. "Right, Sindi?" Tenpenny hops out of his chair, motioning for his entourage to follow after him. "You do that, kid. I enjoyed myself tonight, I'll give ya that much," he huffs, waddling toward the staircase. "Now if you'll excuse me, I gotta prep for tomorrow's council meeting. Ciao."
>>
>>5321501
At the very moment that Tenpenny passes by you, he grabs a generous handful of your buttocks and gives it a firm squeeze. Reflexively, you raise your weapon, prompting his hangers-on to confront you. The half-orc smirks and cracks his knuckles, whilst flames lick the edges of the human woman's fingers. Ilanis places her hands on your arm, encouraging you to lower it as the trio makes their exit. A fight would have won you nothing, you reason.

The two of you stand on the balcony overlooking the tavern's entirety as you share a tense silence. "You should leave," says the girl, chuckling nervously. "I need to see everybody out. We can talk some other time, right?" Though it is presently mid-evening, your body urges you to refrain from exerting yourself further. Your legs especially threaten to rebel against you should you demand anything more than the lightest activity from them.

"Right," you sigh in agreement, gathering up your belongings to depart. What next?

Put plainly, you are far too exhausted to do much of anything, save resting your head. You drag your aching bones to your room at the Phantom Knight and bathe only to remove the stench of athleticism from your person before laying down. Opinions on Tenpenny notwithstanding, the room has already been rented for the night, and you are in no mood to search around for another inn.

Fatigue takes hold. As you slip away from the world of the waking, your tranquil slumber is disturbed by the sensation of something soft brushing up against your hand, punctuated by a stinging pain in your palm. With great effort, you force your left eye open and lazily look upon the source of your distress. An eight-legged creature wreathed in darkness bites into your flesh. A shadow given form, its only distinct feature is the pair of smirking, sensuous lips set atop its abdomen.

Both eyes open, you spot dozens, hundreds of the spider creatures, slipping into your room from beneath the door and under the floorboards. All at once, they creep toward you, emitting what you can only call an aura of murderous intent. Your heart pounds as you become painfully aware that you are going to die here if you do not take action immediately.

Air floods your lungs as you spring into action. You instinctively dive for your weapon, surveying your surroundings for foes as you consider the best escape route. Adrenaline floods your bloodstream to make you ready for a desperate struggle. Yet, there is nothing out of place. It was but a night terror. Or could it be a reminder that you are straying from the course that is intended for you?

The night has not been kind to you, but it has passed. It is now dawn. What would you like to do?

You've decided that you'll not be hunting by your lonesome. There is safety in numbers, and having access to talents outside of your repertoire could be the difference between life and death. As such, you decide that it is imperative that you first know your allies. Readying yourself for the day, you pack your belongings and leave the Phantom Knight behind, making for the Evergreen Hall.

Mielikki's temple is abuzz with activity. Most present are local hunters equipped with whatever implements they are familiar with. They gossip and jape with one another, speaking of the plucky adventures that they will share and reassuring one another of their upcoming exploits. These people have the look of fresh-faced youths who have grown confident in their abilities. You distinctly recall being similar before your first true conflict disillusioned you to the supposed romance of bloodshed.

Sitting cross-legged in a circle on the grasses of the garden are four robed men and women adorned in wild flora, chanting a in language that is wholly unfamiliar to you. Unless you are mistaken, these sort belong to a denomination of nature-priests that worship trees, or some such nonsense. Despite prominently decorating themselves with flowers, the stench about them is... uniquely awful.

Clustered around Willow are the real survivalists, enough to count on both hands. Rangers, hardened by regular skirmishing and long treks through the untamed wilds. She delegates tasks to them, waving them off to attend to the others as she takes notice of you, leaning herself against the tree at the temple's center.
>>
>>5324859
"Good seein' ye again." Willow tilts her head toward you, shooting you a toothy smile. "Didn't think a celeb like yerself still had time for us small folks. So, you still comin' with us, or are ye gonna be busy with whatever it is y'all famous folks get up to?" Folding your arms, you narrow your eyes and regard her skeptically, seeking clarification on the meaning behind her words. "What?"

"Aw, you ain't gotta be shy. Can't find one person what ain't talkin' 'bout that dance. 'Sindiira this,' 'Sindiira that,'" Willow throws her hands up and chortles. "Figure you could do that dance here? Gotta get some new blood in here somehow." She slaps your shoulder playfully. The High Ranger's mirth tapers off as she fixes her vision on her brothers and sisters in faith. "So?" She asks with an expression that you find yourself unable to place no matter which angle you view it from. "What do ye think?"

"About?"

"Jus' wonderin' what ye think 'bout my hunters, the Needles. Ye look like the sort that's seen some things. Real fightin'. Got that look in yer eye 'n' all." She was not wrong. Mother often delegated the unglamorous work of commanding the vanguard to you. The intensity of the frontline can irreversibly alter the psyche of any creature, and you are no exception. Obliging her, you appraise the people who are meant to be accompanying you.

Your limited experience fighting werecreatures did not leave you impressed with their prowess - but you far outstrip this lot in terms of both talent and know-how. Though uncertain of the intent behind the question, you do know that the priestess awaits your answer expectantly.
>They lack experience, but the guidance of a firm hand and a few whippings can shore up their deficiency and bring out their raw talent.

"I like them," you say, nodding approvingly. "Some of the weakest ones will need to be whipped to get them to fight. The ones that do not die can be good warriors one day, if you are harsh on them." In many ways, you see your younger self in these surface-dwelling provincials. A little hardship would go a long way toward thinning out the less capable and bringing the most talented to the forefront.

Willow blinks, staring at your face, jaw slack and eyebrows raised. You look over your shoulder to ensure that there is nobody behind you as she wordlessly sucks in a lungful of air. "Is there something in my teeth?" You ask. The High Ranger looks into your eyes, exhaling deeply. "Naw. Naw, you just got a way with words, is all. Y'know what? I'll just take it as a compliment." She thrums her fingers against the tree, debating with herself internally before going on like a parent lecturing a child on a critical facet of reality. "Lissen', sweetheart. I know ye ain't from 'round here. This kinda' thing might be different where yer from, but we don't let good folks don't hit good folks," she instructs.

"Why?"

Your challenge of her grievance is direct and incisive. It seemed terribly wasteful not to discipline others with the intent of bringing out their better traits. The multitude of Ilythiiri who cannot reach their potential are quickly culled by those who can. As such, inuring the next generation to the world's difficulties has always been considered natural wisdom among your people. So why does this half-breed think differently?

Willow rolls her shoulders. "How's about I show ye instead? That treatin' others right - helpin' folks - gets more respect than pushin' 'em around?" A novel idea. If you are to acknowledge the efficacy of such farcicality, then you will have to witness it firsthand. "All right," you respond, "I want to see that. Show me how to lead without punishing."
>>
>>5326665
"Deal." She grins from ear to ear, assured that she can live up to her allegation. Whether or not others will follow someone into mortal peril out of some naïve sense of misplaced admiration is yet to be seen, though you are willing to keep an open mind. "We're leavin' in the small hours tomorrow mornin', so wake up early. Make sure ye get yourself a silver weapon, if you ain't already."

So the creatures are vulnerable only to a certain substance - it would explain why your blade had such a difficult time cutting through their flesh during your first encounter. That is one mystery resolved. There is something else that has captured your interest as of late. "And your forest friends? Have you asked them about the black-bloods?"

Unexpectedly, Willow's expression darkens. She seemed quite enthused when discussing the activities of Mielikki's cult the other day, but there is grim edge to her inflection which betrays carefully suppressed acrimony. "We ain't seen too many forest friends here lately," she hisses vaguely, allowing you to find your own meaning in her words. Your talk grinds to a sudden halt - somehow, it was not the first time that a conversation ended for you in this fashion.

"I should leave," you mutter stiffly, receiving a cool wave from the High Ranger in return.

You have formed your initial opinion on your allies, and have the foggiest idea of what sort of opposition to expect, as well as how to dispatch them. What now?

From your perspective, a weapon made from silver metal would perform horrendously in combat. Silver is soft and ductile, good for jewelry and currency, not stress nor strife. Fashioning a weapon made of the substance must involve a trick of metallurgy which you are ignorant of, then. Opting to enlist the help of a professional, you pay visit to the Bell Market to look for an item that suits your werebeast-killing needs.

"Aha! The warrior returns!" Shouts the gnome that talked you into purchasing that tasteless (but allegedly effective) armor. He holds out a silken cord with two meager metal studs loosely attached to it, offering it to you. "I have just the thing for a blade-wielding beauty such as yourself. This here is the bleeding edge of personal protective equipment. For you see, it is a state of the art-"

"I need a weapon," you cut him off before his surface-dweller rhetoric can deceive you a second time. "Silver weapon. Show me your silver weapons."

Recoiling in place, he lovingly sets the so-called 'personal protective equipment' down and directs your attention instead toward a small cabinet filled with conventional-looking weaponry. "As you wish, milady. Hunting a vampire? Need to slay a devil or make sure a wraith stays dead? We have the finest selection of alchemical silver armaments this far from Athkatla."

You know what's better than running into combat and stabbing someone? Forcing them to run to you while getting shot, and then stabbing them.
>>
I would also point out that the damage floor for the silver longsword is 2, the average is 4.5 (so 4), and the max is 7. Compare this to the damage floor of the silver katana which is also 2, an average of 5, and a max of 8. The damage difference between these two weapons is negligible aside from crit fishing, which will always be a poor tactic.

If I'm not retarded with my math then its actually quite higher than that. I'd figure the double damage on 1 refers to getting a 1 on either damage roll which'd mean it'd have anywhere from 106/16 (6.62) to 110/16 (6.87) damage on average depending on whether it quadruples on double 1 roll.

You run your index finger over the surface of an exotic scabbard made of lacquered wood, slowly drawing out the armament therein by its grip, designed to accommodate two hands. It is a slim, single-edged blade with a circular guard and a moderate curve that rests easily in your hand. "What is this?" You wonder aloud.

"Ah, a woman of culture I see. That is a katana, a rare thing brought here by mercenaries all the way from a place known as Kozakura and given a silver treatment. Do you like it?" Ordinarily, you preferred double-edged swords - trying to alternate between using the blunt side to defend and the bladed side to strike could be tricky with the often improvisational movements of Orb Alur - but at your level of mastery, you could turn a kitchen utensil into a weapon fit for military use.

That aside, whether it was the aesthetic or the unique craftsmanship, there was something about it which appealed to you on a superficial level. There are other weapons on display which are more affordable and doubtless equally as lethal. Yet, this 'katana' looked pleasing, and felt good to hold. "I'll take it. What do I need to know about using it?"

The gnome throws his hands up, shaking his head. "Oh no! Don't ask me! I don't know the first thing about fighting, and even less about how the warriors from the far east do it. You'd need to ask someone smarter or more well-traveled than me." Something to keep in mind should you feel the desire to pursue that knowledge, then. The deal is done, and you are now the proud owner of one silver katana.

Good advice is a blessing which often goes unappreciated. You, however, recognized its true value. As you will be setting out to hunt creatures of the night, it is only fitting that you defer to the wisdom of one who has made a career of dispatching such beasts. Dulnur Darkshadow, Speaker of the Town and proprietor of the Stag at Bay, is a seasoned adventurer that has achieved the status of a local celebrity according to Ilanis.

The difference between the Stag at Bay and the Dreaming Dragon is so pronounced that the two are hardly comparable. Raucous laughter, wild gambling sprees, and drinking competitions among diverse, hotheaded youths who think themselves intrepid fills the Stag from end-to-end, even at this hour of the morning. A rakish-looking swordsman breaks into song as an ongoing argument devolves into a fistfight, drawing bets from cheering spectators. The clientele here is mostly young - and by your metric, inexperienced - adventurers drunk on their latest victories.

You must shout to converse with the patrons, asking around for Dulnur. Battling your way through an unruly tide of persons at variable degrees of inebriation, you find the man seated in a booth situated in the corner of the tavern, holding a smoking pipe in his right hand as he occasionally sips from a glass of stout with the other. He sneers as you step in a shallow pool of vomit, tracking it across the floor.

This hargluk - dwarf in the surface-dweller language - is the mortal manifestation of aged bitterness. His hard features and joyless expression lend credit to the possibility that he is made of rock, exacerbated by the wrinkles in his skin that resemble fissures in stone. Bushy white hairs erupt from his skull, neatly maintained and arranged into an elaborate beard. Thinking on it, this is the first time that you've encountered someone older than yourself while in Everlund, a truth that is not easy to reconcile with.
>>
>>5330114
Dulnur regards you with open disdain. Not even the barest attempt is made to disguise the expression of entrenched hatred permanently affixed to his face, a fact that it not lost on you. He blows a reeking cloud of bluish smoke toward your face and snorts. "Can't farruking believe it. By Tymora's tits, they really did let a drow in. Worse, she's an honest-ta-gods Zhent." The dwarf slams his fist against the table, attracting attention from some of the Stag's patrons. "Everlund's going ta shit! In ten years this place will be worse than Westgate!"

Activity in the Stag abates slightly as a small crowd gathers to listen in on the conversation, sharing excited whispers with one another. Keeping in mind the reason why you have come, you speak at Dulnur with a measured cadence, making certain to emphasize why you are here. "I am Sindiira Torani. I am hunting black-bloods, and I-"

"Aye, I know who yae are, drow. I know why yaer here, and how yae work fer Zhents, too. I know thet yae're a liar, a strumpet, and a killer. How yaer kin murder and enslave each other and come up here ta do the same ta good people some nights." He takes a sip from his stout as the rowdy mob encircling you grows steadily in size. "We used ta hang yaer ilk from the walls ta remind them that we don't tolerate yaer nonsense, until Gingey got on the council and started crying about 'barbarity.'"

'Gingey' must refer to the High Sorcerer, Amaranth, on account of his reddish-yellow hair. "Yae know what's barbaric? How yaer entire race can't stop stealing and murdering fer an entire tenday." Dulnur places his pipe in his mouth, blowing smoke from his nostrils with every word. "So which one are yae here fer on this fine morning, drow?"

The mob's mumbles continuously increase until they fully transition into a vigorous discussion. It is not as though you are in a position to dispute any of Dulner's claims. The Ilythiiri did not earn their reputation overnight, and you yourself do not have a history of pacifism and honest conduct. What's worse, any words you trade here are not between yourself and the Speaker, but with all of the Stag's patrons.

What say?
>Is there an actual reason why he hates me? I have done nothing to him.
>I simply wish to know how to deal with the black-bloods and I will leave, I swear it.

Particularly unfavorable is the situation that you now find yourself in. This sort of jeering is commonplace enough where you are from; opinions normally disallowed in public flow freely behind closed doors among 'good company.' They could clamor on and on about their unashamed loathing for you and your kin until they spat enough venom to flood all the planes, and it would still be dismissed as 'some lighthearted banter between friends.'

You shut your eyes and imagine a way that you might convince Dulnur to adopt a less belligerent attitude. Whatever the dwarf and his clique of adventurers believed you were guilty of mattered little to you. Securing his expert insight on fighting black-bloods was your objective here, and to do that, you would first have to find common ground. What would Thiala do? You swear under your breath. It is the height of folly to fall back on lessons learned from a children's novel, but it is the closest thing you have to a guide on surface-dweller diplomacy.

Raising both hands to your face with the palms facing outward - a gesture meant to demonstrate that you mean no harm - you attempt to explain your position. "I," you sigh, "am not a Zhent, hargluk. I do not know what a Zhent is. And-"

"Yeah right!" Shouts someone from the ruckus behind your back. You sustain a meaningful silence before you go on.

"And there is no bad blood between us. Never did I do anything to any of you. All I need is-"

"Yae've done enough, I think," interjects the dwarf. Getting a word in with these people is nigh impossible. "In three hundred bloody years, naer have I killed a dark elf that wasn't asking fer it. I've fought yae in the mountains and in the forests, up here and in the Underdark too. Not a single good soul between any of yae. Get ye gone, drow, and don't let the door hit yer arse on the way out."

"He's right, you know!" Cries a young woman clad in polished plate.
"Yeah! Find me one good drow!" Agrees another.
"I saw what they do to people down there! Cyric's blood, it ain't right!"

It is apparent that you could attain sainthood in the most beneficent surface-dweller cult and these folk would still detest you for merely being born. Rather than agonize over this, you elect to take your leave - there is nothing for you here. You pivot in place and make for the exit at a brisk pace. The very second that you turn away, you catch sight of an object rapidly approaching you in your peripheral vision and tilt your body aside. An empty bottle flies by your face and shatters against the tavern floor.

Coolly, you step over the shards and out into the city streets.

That got you nowhere. What now?

Arming yourself with information is not a fool's errand. You may not be able to draw from an adventurer's experience, but understanding the goals and methods of your adversaries is still an advantage that you will not be passing up. In the Underdark, it is the books of the mages which serve as repositories of lore, and the only mage you know of by name in Everlund is Amaranth Cywir. Unlike Dulnur, he seemed cordial enough when you met him. Surely a few minutes of his time would not be too much to ask?

The search for the bell which opens a portal to Amaranth's retreat takes you to the alley in which you found it prior. Rapping your knuckle against it tears apart the fabric of space, opening a window into the mage's home, through which you step. Some distance away is the High Sorcerer, his eyes fixed on a lectern upon which rests a weighty leather bound grimoire, oblivious to your presence.

With an unhurried stride, you step towards him, entering his awareness little by little, until his concentration breaks away from the text. He blinks, adjusting his posture as he looks in your direction. "Sindiira?" He clears his throat. "Do forgive me. I was memorizing my spells for today. Is there something I can do for you?" The Ar-tel-quessir's willingness to assist shocks like icy water splashing against your face after enduring Dulnur's scorching antagonism. You make a mental note to ask him about the dwarf and his choice of company after you have concluded your business here.

Once again taking in the sight of stacked books and inexplicably floating spheroids, you speak hesitantly, half-expecting your request to be denied. "I need to learn about Malar. I am hunting black-bloods." The wizard presses his left index finger against his chin, considering your request for a time. Smiling pleasantly, he inclines his head toward you. "Never in my travels have I encountered a werewolf, but I have some material pertaining to religion that might interest you. Please, wait here a moment."

Amaranth ascends the spiral staircase built into the wall, returning moments later with a comically oversized hard cover book. He sets it on a nearby table, and beckons you over, inviting you to have a look at it. The title reads FAITHS & AVATARS 2nd Edition. "Often, I find myself returning to this one. My days of traveling are behind me, but I do enjoy learning about other cultures." He looks to you, expecting a response, though you find yourself with nothing to add. Gently, he opens the book to the table of contents. "Should you require anything else, you need only ask."

He returns to the lectern, situated only ten paces away, leaving you to page through the book. Lathander, Lliira, Loviatar... you reach the beginning of a chapter dedicated to Malar and his cult. The text is far more formidable than the simplistic prose of The Pretty Princess of Myth Drannor, but you are up to the task, sounding out unfamiliar words as you go along.

Malar, known also as the Beastlord, the Black-Blooded Pard, and the Stalker, is the god of the savage wild. Hunters, bloodlust, predatory beasts, and stealthy pursuit are his purview, and he is well-liked by those who hunt only for the sport of it. The survival of the strong and culling of the weak are chief among his precepts, and all Malarites wish to die a bloody, violent death, for the challenge between hunter and prey is the most important facet of mortal life. Indeed, he commands that his faithful never kill from a distance and always taste the blood of those whom they have slain.

The church - if it can be called that - is scattered and only loosely bound. Malar is not a popular god, and believers spend their time in the wilderness hunting or harassing roads and small communities. Naturally, the worship of Malar revolves around the hunt. Prayers are to be offered before and during the chase, after which the faithful celebrate with a toast - occasionally, they quite literally drink the blood of their prey. There are but two important rites in the Malarite religion; the Feast of Stags, a festival of gluttony during which even non-believers are invited to dine on hunted animals in peace, and the High Hunt.

The High Hunt must take place once every season by Malar's decree, and all clergy that can walk must participate. A non-believer, equipped with any non-magical weapons and armor they desire, is set loose into a wooded area, surrounded on all sides by faithful. Every Malarite, armed with nothing but a single knife, is tasked with hunting down them down for the glory of their god. Should the prey escape the boundary or survive for a full day and a night, however, they may never be hunted again and can ask any boon of Malar's priests that does not involve the murder of a Malarite.

The god himself appears as a catlike beast, always covered in blood, or a similar black-furred creature, as well as a cloud of darkness surrounding two red eyes. When needed, he can act through predators such as bears, wolves, and lyc-.... lyca-.... lyca-...

You squint at the page, struggling with an unfamiliar word. The letters are there, though the pronunciation is tricky, and the meaning is beyond you. Another attempt to sound it out is made by you, to no avail. Unable to help but notice your predicament, Amaranth leaves his spellcraft behind to join you, looking down at the page. "Lycanthrope," he offers. "It is a term for a humanoid capable of shapeshifting to become an animal. Some are afflicted by an infectious curse, whilst others are born with the condition." An amorphous sensation stirs uncomfortably in your stomach. Being helped feels... peculiar.

Smiling again, he steps away, leaving you with your thoughts. You now know more than the average person about Malar and his doctrine. What do you think?

That DOES align with what's been established of Jez's culture and her traditional leadership style. They also share food and let worthy people escape, which seems like things a drow might even see as noble and magnanimous, since they'd be unlikely to be so "generous" in their brutally pragmatic, resource-scarce society.
>>
File deleted.
>>5334030
Maybe I didn't write that option very well. It's basically Jez thinking "Struggling to survive is a part of life, but my life is not about struggling to survive." Anons have been pretty consistent about portraying Jez as a deadly but refined person that likes arts and luxuries so far.

To kill and struggle is to survive. You would never have circumvented certain doom were it not for your affinity for martial arts and willingness to take on hardships. But to live in seclusion as a wild woman, subsisting only on blood and flesh, killing for its own sake and praying that someday, another will slay you and dine on your meat... it is a life that you do not envision for yourself. The only consistent theme of the Beastlord's dogma is violence, visceral and raw, totally absent of purpose.

No, you think you will keep your weapons, and your beds, and your wines and baths. The life of the hunt belongs to the werebeasts and the dullards and the madmen, and you do not count yourself among their number. You flip the page, and skim what appears to be an abridged history of the Stalker, his cult, and their recent activities - nothing that pertains to your immediate quest.

You close the book, resting your hand on the cover for a time as you imagine the precious information that could be printed on its pages. As if he can read your thoughts, Amaranth speaks at you. "Forgive me, but that must remain here. Good books from Calimport can cost a small fortune, you see. If you'd like, I could leave it on that table, and you may return should you ever have need of it again."

Stepping back, you incline your head and study Amaranth's face, trying to unearth some malicious intent or concealed motive in his apparently selfless offer. In turn, he stares back, perceptibly bewildered by your skepticism. Ultimately, you decide to put your concerns behind you. Other thoughts occupy your mind.

Relaxing your expression, you roll your shoulders and face him properly. "I met Dulnur." The words manage to siphon a good deal of the warmth from Amaranth. He smiles weakly, exerting himself to maintain the pretense of being in high spirits as he replies. "Speaker Darkshadow can be a coarse individual, but his efforts have earned the adoration of our community. The Silver Marches were, and still are a dangerous region at times, and he is something of a mentor to the young adventurers that come here looking to do some good." Each word is carefully selected to give a certain impression of an otherwise particularly acrid individual and his goons.

"Do they cause trouble?" You ask directly. It is easy to envision a scenario in which the unruly patrons of the Stag at Bay cause a disturbance for Ilanis over at the Dreaming Dragon given the establishment hosted your performance. Such a thought is enough to give you pause; worrying after others is most unlike you. What, exactly, would compel you to ever ask such a question at all?

The High Sorcerer folds his hands as he tries to assuage your apprehension. "Nothing more severe than a tavern brawl now and again. We have been very diligent in regulating their behavior; alas, there are many among us who do not share our vision of a welcoming Silver Marches." He stands taller, the lost geniality quickly returning to his voice and visage. "Do not let them drive you away. You belong here, just as much as anyone else."

"I see," you hum, settling your eyes on the portal. That, you felt, covered everything you needed to know for the moment. Certain that you are adequately prepared, the time is come for you to return to the Evergreen Hall. "Work is waiting for me." You exchange farewells and part ways with the mage, set to your task. There is much yet for you to do, to learn here in Everlund, but fate has other designs in store.

Tomorrow, you will hunt the hunters.

And that is the end of Volume II. Next time, we'll get right into the violence, risk dying a horrible death, and maybe spend a little more time with the sisters.

Now is the time for questions, comments, and what have you. Like the last time, there will be a hiatus of two days before the quest returns.

Thank you for running this quest! It's an especially good one. I'm at a loss for questions just now, though.

Great quest! Thanks Greenwood!

I like the quest. Simple system, good writing.

I was abroad for a bit more than a week and had a good time reading up on this threads updates today. Nothing much to add, I look forward to what comes after the hunt, ie where we can take it next.
How does Jez view a relatively benevolent (male) mage like Amaranth? Does her drow mentality (hard to understand benevolence/friendlyness etc) make her think she should give some kind of tribute/gift to Amaranth for his help and/or to ensure his future aid?
>>

Let's talk about drow physiology and the trouble with mages in their society.

On the whole, drow are sexually dimorphic. All drow can be warriors, but females tend to be taller and more robust than males, so they overall gravitate toward professions that involve melee combat and athleticism. Wizarding, on the other hand, is generally seen as a profession for men, and girls with an interest in magic like Jezyrene's younger sister Phaere are viewed as "tomboyish" rebels. Going against the social norm like this attracts dangerous attention; "the traditional is best" is a common drow proverb.

Mages are the linchpin of their society. They provide necessary protections against the long list of dangerous creatures that inhabit the Underdark, make valuable items that keep their economy afloat, and are experts in security and gathering information. They are also quite formidable in a fight, making them both highly respected for their abilities and resented for the disproportionate amount of influence that they can throw around. Lowly apprentices are still subject to the social order, but a sufficiently powerful archmage is, for all intents and purposes, literally untouchable. Now that we've gotten through all of that...

Jez implicitly believes that a powerful wizard can be a valuable ally worthy of her respect. Where she is from, there is no such thing as benevolence, so she is naturally skeptical of his motives. An act that seems selfless is usually a way of investing in future favors, or a way demonstrating how much power one can exert. If anons want to try to secure his help by giving him a gift or performing some grand gesture, it would be a logical thing for Jez to do.

As for what she thinks of him as a person, that's up to all of you (You). If we make it through the hunt, there will be a chance to meet the two council members that we haven't become acquainted with yet and interact more with the rest of them.
>>
>>5335324
Can Jez have children of her own?
>>
>>5336446
No. Jez will either have to get over it or hope for some divine intervention.
>>
>>5336421
Thanks for the indepth explanation, makes a lot of sense. I've never really read much on drow culture before as from what I've read they seem fairly one note, but this was more nuance than I expected. I'll try to remember the point on "giftgiving" to the mage - if nothing else it could lead to a humorous interaction leading to a greater understanding of the Tenets of Friendship.
>>5336545
Not the same guy, but interesting. I had forgotten that from last thread, had to look it up.
At least that's another internal plot hook to seek out a deity/divine intervention, if she wants kids herself one day.
On a meta level, I wonder if Lolth gives and takes away fertility to Drow to reward/punish them, given that Jez has been stated to find it hard to subjugate herself to a higher power like that.
>>
>>5336545
Could this divine intervention just be in the form of Jez paying a cleric for a restoration spell? Perhaps something along the lines of regeneration or heal?
>>
>>5336545
You keep mentioning Jez's age catching up to her, but exactly how old is she?

Also, you've mentioned before that there might be a chance to meet Faerûn's most famous ranger, and that there might be even more obscure ones to meet, but how far are you thinking of going with this? Like, am I going to be tempted to find my long lost high school reading material of yellowing Richard Lee Byers and Elaine Cunningham books, or, god forbid, buy them on the internet?
>>
>>5336769
Well let's see from the last thread.

>If you had to estimate, you'd say that you're at least eighty years older than her, perhaps ninety.
>Having suffered over two hundred years of sustained agony, you had long wondered if you were capable of any emotion beyond loathing, yet for a brief moment, you did not resent the fate that had been foisted upon you.

Then from this thread.

>Thinking on it, this is the first time that you've encountered someone older than yourself while in Everlund, a truth that is not easy to reconcile with.
>In three hundred bloody years, naer have I killed a dark elf that wasn't asking fer it.

So, we're over 200, probably late 200 early 300 if I were to guess.

We'll get into our options if voters decide to pursue the path of dealing with Jezyrene's condition, but to make a long story short, the gods really enjoy making mortal life difficult.

>>5336769
There won't be too many cameos, I don't think. I don't want this to turn into a fanfiction quest any more than a home game of D&D would be a "fanfiction." Well, a certain (in)famous wizard may pop up now and again to antagonize us.

>>5336789
I guess I'll clear this up so everyone can better picture where the non-humans are in their lives.

Jez is in her early-mid 200s. To put that in numbers that actually matter, if she were a human, she would be in her 40s. She underestimates the age gap between herself and Ilanis, who would be a quirky girl in her late teens by our metric. Working off of this scale, Dulnur easily lands somewhere around 90. Last is Amaranth, who is at a similar point in life as Jez, but he ages a little more slowly, which puts him in his late 30s.
>>
>>5337024
>Jez underestimates elf ages because she doesn't want to think she's old

So Ilanis is probably around 100? Or does the whole quirky teen by human metric mean she's in her 20's? I say in her 20's as I feel that Jez would immediately notice a lack of complete physical maturity. Just from the conversations shown so far I really felt like Jez was rather off with her assumed age for Ilanis.

Sounds like the starting point for an adventure with friends. Find a fertility blessing.

>>
>>5337213
Somewhere around 100, yes. She would be between 16 and 20 for us, hence why Jez calls her "girl."

Be careful what you wish for.
