For a young race interstellar war is unfathomable. The distances between worlds are vast and the time frames stretch over decades. A battle may be long over by the time reinforcements arrive, a force’s weapons obsolete before their first deployment. Worse still each world is unique, differences in gravity, atmospheric pressure and temperature ranges mean a warmachine that dominates one planet becomes useless on another.

Any military force deployed abroad would have to be capable of adapting to the conditions on site. It must be self-replicating and self-improving; it must be capable of evolution…

So it was when the Architects went to war with the Engineers. The former deployed advanced AI cores capable of analysing planetary conditions and fabricating drones suited to local environment. The latter deployed a genetically engineered swarm of warrior creatures that could rapidly evolve to overcome any threats encountered.

These two philosophies, similar yet different in subtle ways, would be pitted against each other across countless worlds…

(One thing I'm kinda curious about, how will evolution work form a player-input standpoint? Do we tell you exactly what we want and you accept/deny/tweak it ("i want to strengthen my exoskeleton for a defense buff"), or can we just give a general idea and you work off that ("gimme more defense")? Maybe a bit of both?)

Okay, here's the backgroundless .png template so you guys can illustrate your changes. You don't have to draw a picture if you don't want to, you can just describe you evolution and leave it to me to visualize it. I have to redraw each new sprite anyway to incorporate it into my map.

Evolution Guidelines
>Evolutions will usually have a mechanical effect, you can suggest what effect you'd like to have, or you can just describe the change and leave the crunch to me. Either way I have the final word how it translates into the rules. I may add drawbacks to balance an especially powerful evolution or veto it entirely.
>Evolution must be a gradual process in response to the environmental or enemy challenges. You can't just tech straight to ultralisk.
>Given that you are playing super organisms you can evolve a bit faster than a traditional evo, but it still must be incremental.

At the command of one of the hive consciousnesses a flyer drone evolves ranged attack capabilities. The forward limbs evolve organs that that use an intense muscle contraction to fire a chitin spike at lethal velocities.
For some reason the carapace also gains a gilded sheen that does nothing besides giving the creature an almost imperceptible confident swagger.

The snow drone evolves a thick fur covering, stronger leg muscles and an extra pair of legs to resist windchill and maintain their movement speed in blizzard conditions.

The armoured drone has developed thicker carapace which increases its overall survivability. Futher improvements in this area may come with drawbacks, or require evolution in other areas.

All the above evolutions have been saved as new species in the genetic repository.

We have visual contact with the AI units. One appears to be a standard combat walker, the other appears to be a light gunship. A scout? Or the vanguard of a much larger force?

The hive re-engineers a drone to walk on water. Achieving this will require elongated legs with specialised “feet”. Unfortunately the stricter weight limit means the drone must lose it’s defensive carapace, and the loss of gripping talons means it can no longer climb cliff faces or mountain sides. On the plus side it’s increased agility on water makes it harder to hit.

((The grabby hands and builder arms are similar enough that I'm gonna roll them into one adaptation.))

Two drones simultaneously evolve a pair of long dexterous arms. This enables them to more effectively manipulate objects, throwing them as an improvised ranged attack. They can also navigate forest more easily climbing and swinging from trees. Their new found dexterity allows them to build crude structures out of local materials, although without any kind of bonding agent further evolution might be required to become a true builder.

Okay some hotfixes and clarifications:

Posting the current genetic respository now as just a list of units you can spawn from the hive, the whole evolution chart will be a separate thing just so you can see how far you've come.

Hotfix: Giving the ranged flyer's attack the roll 2d10, pick the highest quality since I felt the base attack was too weak. Given that it was the first ranged adaptation it's supposed to be weak, but an unmodified range 3 attack might be a bit too weak.

Also: When re-spawning from a hive, you can take your turn immediately. By the same token if you start your turn next to a hive you can change your creature to any one in the genetic repository at no cost then take your turn. Skirmish moves slow and it sucks to spend a whole turn just spawning or swapping out your critter.

Based on discussion in the discord I am adding the following rules:

When creating a hive you may choose to forgo evolving the hive and instead do one of the following:
>Evolve the current creature you are sacrificing to create the hive.
>Evolve another creature that is saved in the genetic repository.
>Evolve the cocoons.

Provided the hive survives the enemy phase, all changes will automatically be saved to the genetic repository.

Finally, hive cocoons have 3 hitpoints and no defensive bonuses. Damaged sustained during gestation will carry over to the mature hive's HP.

I will not provide intelligence reports every turn as they take extra time to put together and sometimes my schedule is tight. However I will try to post some on a semi-regular basis, if only to keep myself honest about enemy capabilities.

The combat walker and engineer are known staples of Architect design. They were likely the initial template units that the AI core adapted for this planet shortly after landing.

The gunship and fabricator likely had to be developed on site. The latter is concerning but expected, the AI core itself is probably far from out main hive cluster and will need to set up forward positions if it is to launch a sustained attack.

idea is so these gun drones dont have any melee attacks if you get close they cant really do anything.

The Hive minds feverishly work on a slew of new evolutions…
The basic flyer’s musculature and nervous system is overhauled, enhanced optics and neural processing allow the species to rapidly detect incoming threats. Independent wing muscle groups give the capability of omni-directional flight. These two abilities together grant the flyer an almost uncanny ability to evade incoming attacks.

The Goldbug line is taken in three different directions.

The first replaces the chitin spike throwers with a gas-based weapon inspired by the glacial yak. Although the hive’s version is more efficient and focuses the ignited gases into a hot cutting torch. While effective range is severely reduced it’s ability to defeat armour is vastly improved.

The second augments the chitin spike launchers with gas propulsion, granting greater range and damage potential, a mundane, yet crucial improvement.

The third evolution enhances the goldbug’s eyes with a fly like nerve complex similar to that of the dodge flyer, but without the omnidirectional flight capability the defensive benefit of this new awareness is not as great.

The newest hive evolves a serious of pores and glands that allow it to exude an adrenal cocktail, galvanizing nearby swarm creatures.

Finally, the lone water strider, stuck between a rock and a hard place, reverses it’s water walking adaptations, growing an extra pair of legs with gripping feet to navigate vertical surfaces. The lessened weight restrictions even allow it to regain a light defensive carapace. Unfortunately since it was away from the hives, the water walker species has been lost.

BTW if you guys wish to name your new evolutions feel free to do so, so far I've been naming them myself as the mood takes me.

Oof the Genetic Repository is getting huge. I might have to start omitting certain older species if it gets too big. Rest assured You will always be able to spawn units that have been added to the repository even if they are not shown in the latest version. This is purely a visual space saving measure.

Also following discussion in the discord I am adding the following rules update: Since the players are limited to 10 active units while the AI can keep spawning from fabricators in the interest of fairness I am imposing a 10 active unit cap on the bots. This does not apply to structures.

As of now between the visible units and units hidden by the fog, the AI have more than 10 units in play. They will not spawn more until cap has been freed up.

Speaking of the discord, here's the invite link:
https://discord.gg/YwG5y9FH

Rest assured for those who do not like discord all important information will be posted in thread.

Finally here's the latest template pic of all extant swarm species.

I'd like to stress that while I will do my best to provide people with the supplementary materials(updated gene repo, template image, intel report) as often as I can they take extra time to prepare so I might not be able to give you new ones every turn.
>>
>>5322740
Perhaps allow for additional spawning? Thinking of evolving swarming perhaps
>>
>>5322764
I'd rather not solve problems by "adding more stuff", mental load is a serious problem when running a skirmish. I've learned the hard way that giving the QM too many things to think about seriously bogs down the game and saps their will to run.

That's not to say you can't propose an evolution that let's you spawn more units, just know that I will be extremely cagey about anything that increases my processing load.

The hive mind haphazardly tries to enhance the reaction times of the basic flyer. This results in an unstable mutation. The new creature is in a constant state of agitation, while this boosts it’s evasion and attack power there is a small chance of a spontaneous stroke or heart attack.

The super torch flyer combines dodge capabilities and a powerful torch weapon. However the caloric requirements of the gas weapon, enhanced nervous system and independent muscle groups mean that the flyer’s body is at the limit of it’s capabilities. Further enhancing this species will require addition adaptations to offset this, lest it suffer a draw back.

The new armed adrenal support hive grows a set of hybrid chitin gas cannons similar to the long ranged flyer making it a solid support structure.

Oh one last rules update, this came up during processing:
>Up to two units may occupy the same hex, but they must be a flyer and a ground based unit. There cannot be two flyers or two ground units in the same hex. This is mainly to avoid visual clutter. While I have no issue with allowing units to stack up from a game play stand point, stuffing too many sprites into the same hex makes it harder to keep track of things.

The hive takes the spider drone species in two different directions.

The first evolves a special sensor dampening web. Allowing it to create coverings that can hide itself and it’s allies from even the machine’s advanced sensors.

The second evolves a tail for swimming and special water proof silk that can be used to store air for trips underwater. Together these adaptations allow the creature to traverse the seas without fear of surface attack.

The berserker flyer evolves a photo-reactive carapace that broadcasts it’s presence to all nearby enemies but confounds their ability to get an accurate weapons lock.

Finally the snow drone evolves a hyper active metabolism, increasing attack speed at the cost of it’s lifespan.

>Evolve Cocoons with Abundant Stem Cell Reserves, granting whatever spawns from the Cocoon to regenerate damage taken as a Cocoon over time after it hatches (1 HP per turn). This Resiliency also allows the Cocoons to take more damage before being destroyed, gaining +1 HP.
For example, a Hive Cocoon takes 2 damage as a Cocoon, then hatches into a Hive. It spawns with 3/5 HP, and after a turn, regens to 4/5, and after another, to 5/5. Does not regenerate HP taken after hatched, so if it goes to 4/5, then takes 1 damage, it would only regen back up to 4/5 since it was due for 1 more.

The Hive begins converting the super-fly to look more like one of indigenous amphibians, beyond aesthetic changes this doesn't appear to affect it's capabilities at all. Further evolution will be required

Taking inspiration from the hybrid cannons the hive evolves a set of gas assisted muscles around the spawning tubes, allowing fresh units to be "deployed" at a greater distance.

Cocoons now have enhanced healing.

Alas Roach's hive was destroyed before they could complete their evolution.

The main hive species has reached the limit of it's genetic complexity, the booster regen hive sacrifices the reactive armour to gain regeneration capability.

The armoured booster battle hive evolves higher durability, this is a comparatively simple evolution so previous traits have been retained.

However both hives are now branched as new species. When creating and evolving hives, please specify which species you are using.

The Bane Wing is born in the acid, molded by it. It is now a volatile, wretched creature driven by unstable impulses, drawn to battle and liable to explode at any time.

The guard drone sacrifices it's mobility for even more durability. This species must grow larger to continue evolving in this direction, this could have the potential for even more powerful abilities but becoming larger than 1 hex will make it more difficult to spawn.
Front arc defence already covered 180 degrees so I'll just give you plus 4

The camo spider evolves more muscular arms and specialized eye stalks for increased throwing power and accuracy.

The sapper spider evolves acid glands and acid resistant webbing. It can now basically make it's own grenades.

The cocoons have evolved a cameleonic outer skin which makes them harder to hit. However the cocoon genome has a much lower threshold for adaptations since it must grow quickly around evolving creatures. Cocoons cannot be evolved further without reverting one of their traits.

The glacial battle hive evolves a set of small hooked appendages along it's underside. This allows it to crawl up glaciers at a... well... glacial pace. Not fast enough for any real strategic repositioning, but it will stop the hive from being destroyed by the cold season.

The glaciers begin their advance, the volcanoes cease their ash productions, the amphibians prepare to hibernate... the cold season returns...

Can people *please* try to kill that drill? We're not going to make any progress here as long as they have drills. >>
>>5337702
Yeah, the drill can kill a hive a turn and lift our siege entirely if it's not dealt with. But it's not just the drill. The AI has a critical mass of bots around the core that make our offensive pretty difficult, but it's bottlenecked on production speed. Maybe it'd be better if we focused on clearing out bots and blowing up its infrastructure for a couple turns before we resumed attacking the Core? That Research Center and those factories are much softer target, and they'll make our siege of the Core easier in the long-term.

>>5337541
I can think of a few ways to weaponize the fauna:
A) Parasite bug that infests a critter's nervous system and allows the player to control it
B) Bug that spawns parasites to infest critters. Not directly controlled by a player, just making them friendly to us and aggressive towards the machines. Bonus for self-replicating parasites that encourage the host to procreate.
C) Bug that lays eggs in the fauna, with the eggs using the biomass to rapidly hatch into swarms that seek and attack the nearest machine.

>>
>>5337975
You're right, pheromones would work nicely. Pheromones to increase reproduction, make them hate the machines and identify us as friendly.
>>
anyone else noticing how the machines have now mainly become mostly just ground based melee units after the amount of scramblers and ranged defenses we have set up.

And those escort units are really super effective as adjacent units damage can get willingly shunted to them with a shield generator that produces 1 constantly regenerating single HP so a circle or triangle formation of them would be frightening spreading the damage.

any ideas for counters? i see we are going for acid AOE damage should be effective with how they are going to cluster overwhelming the generators, but should we go for more exotic paths, we got metallic carapace as a trait so cybernetics atleast will not be rejected from the bodies immune system if needed and stuff being made is looking pretty tasty, we now got the acid bomb could perhaps be coupled with the overcharged metabolism for a power boost for living missile attacks.but i worry they will develop acid resistance.
>>5338034
i had a weird idea coupled with that what if we just mutate a hive to have teats? would nourish them identify it as a maternal figure and allow us to constantly dose them with mixtures and hulk them up with seeming endless fonts of biomass

>>
>>5338038
>any ideas for counters?
Zerg rushing should work in the short term. The AI can build 2 units at the core, +2 from the factories. If we kill more than that and blow up the factories, we can whittle them down over time. Evolving a more powerful weapon that can one shot them would also work nicely, or maybe EM-sheathed projectiles that can bypass shields.
>that what if we just mutate a hive to have teats

I think this should be acceptable movement, I've moved through a frog earlier in the thread so hopefully I won't have to kill it first. If I can't move past it my action is:
>Kill Frog

As for the current situation, we've got a solid siege on the AI Core right now and the northern flank is all but secure barring the Fabrication Unit. The AI Core has deployed a Missile Launcher, which I assume is for self-defense, sacrificing a construction slot for it. If we keep between 3 or 4 units on the core we can surpress any units spawning out of it for the time being.

The rest of the team should sweep south as fast as possible, clean out the Reaserch Center and try to break the Fabrication unit and secure the side of the mountain currently under Fog of War. The Machines most likely have another Fabricator there and maybe more Research Centers.
Also if the player controlling unit 11, I forget who it is, could snipe the Engineering Walker this turn that would be great. As long as we actively hunt and snipe those Engineers until we're certain the only production building remaning is the Core, the AI will not be able to sneak off and build new fabricators. At that point we win since we have much more biomass to throw at the AI Core than it has metal to ward us off with.

If you want to domesticate the local wildlife you're going to have to do more than just lactate. How will you encourage the animals to come to you for food? Once they've grown comfortable around the swarm how will you control them?

Alright guys PSA:
When posting actions please use green text so it's easier for me to find them. Also please put your assigned number in your trip so I can find you on the map.

I've been very generous with interpreting vague commands in this game but the mental load is getting to me. The easier you make it for me to figure out what you want me to do, the less likely I am to make a processing error.
>>
>>5337996
You know you don't need to assimilate the wildlife to evolve their traits. Unless you want to study the creature's specific biology the Swarm is quite capable of evolving gas organs and sticky tongues without having to consume yaks and frogs respectively.

With the results of how people's actions will be interpreted and resolved being in question, I find it too risky to plant a hive right now. It loses its Bite attack and the mandibles alter their shape so they can plant themselves in the ground to brace the Spider for firing its enlarged gun. The increased offensive power of the new form comes with numerous drawbacks: It loses the ghili suit, its carapace softens and no longer confers a defensive bonus, it has a maximum lifespan similar to other overcharged drones, and the need to brace for firing makes it able to move OR attack in a single turn but not both, and the gun cannot be fired in close range.

Hey, can you use that torchbug to liquefy the missile launcher strapped to the AI core? I have a feeling it's targetable seperately. I would, but (°–°) in my way needs to be euthanized first.

Well, since bugs and drones don't have self-awarness or high intelligence, I guess hivemind and AI would have to talk it out. Kinda dissatisfying, but I could get real guns. Cyborg bugs are tempting, but wrong and horrifying on many levels. So many things to consider.
Let's wage war like there's no tomorrow, for this map.
Also yeah let's just build a mediumnuke and modify rear-end base to become an orbital launch platform. Then we can turn AI into hiroshimAI.

The artillery spider is evolved into the heavy artillery spider. Its Mortar becomes bigger and expels its payload with more force. The acid it excretes becomes even more corrosive, changing to clear coloured instead of green. Its sniper eyestalks evolve a second eye each for better accuracy over long range. Its legs become heavier and sturdier to withstand the increased force, like the Heavy Guard Drone's.

The armoured booster battle hive is evolved into the corrosive artillery obelisk. It gives up much of it's hive support adaptations, including the the ability to spawn units in favour of a massive acid mortar.

Finally the super yakolev replaces it's torch weapons with web dispensers designed to clog enemy mechanisms, temporarily disabling them.

Time for some clarifications:
>Yes the new heavy artillery bug and web flyer should not be in the repo. I totally forgot about that. However given that some people have already declared actions assuming they were I will give it to you this time, but I will be more mindful of this going forward.

>Unless explicitly stated, a unit can be assumed to have NO ability to traverse water, mountains and cliff faces.

And here we go, the obligatory evolution chart. It's interesting to see what was expanded upon and what was an evolutionary dead end.

So what did you guys think of the game? Feel free to leave feed back. I put this together in a hurry so the planet didn't have much in the way of local fauna or "secrets". If I run this again I will definitely change two things:
>More neutral stuff on the planet to explore and interact with.
>Victory point based win condition. (Score points for completing objectives rather than just trying to wipe each other out. Annihilation victories take forever, and I was already starting to feel QM fatigue from this game. If the machines had been luckier and the QM less lenient we might have been here all year.)

Also is everyone fine with me hosting the supplemental materials on World Anvil? There's a lot of extra info the players need access to and dumping fresh images in thread is a bit of a pain for me.
>>
>>5344713
I love World Anvil it's my new home. If you can start posting some of the stuff in thread and then in world anvill it'll be perfect.

It was fun. Reminded me of the fun RTS Starcrafts or Dawn of War game and the Evolve into you dream bug was a nice add on. At the start though I was a bit unimaginative what with the simple stuff I created (Oh look Aqua Drone and Climber Drone were my lost ideas! Very Inspired) but I got into it and started us on the Sapper Drone. Feelsgoodman. Though it was put together in a hurry you got your definite basics down (like always) and that's great.

Keeping us at low HP at the start through most of the game made me care a little less about if i'd live or die by next turn. The true stress is trying to evolve and not get caught by the enemies stopping you (on the bug side, it'll be drastically different for Robo side from what I witnessed.) Nice work non the less.

>More Neutral stuff
Interesting, It'll be good becausse we could get some more stuff going. Though I did expect the volcano's to erupt or something. Guess next time I should evolve something to make the eruption happen/travel between volcanoes. Would be fun. Perhaps even making true alliances with the local fauna.

>Victory points
Yes please, I didn't mind how it went but it did seem to take a long time to get there or to a point we could actually kill the AI core (thanks Sapper Drone. Me love you long time my creation.) Make sure to plan fairly how points are distributed and...well that's pretty much it.

Thanks for running! Can't wait for whatever you decide to run next. Even if it's a past system (maybe it'll put to vote? Who knows? We all love "democracy"xD).

Stay healthy and excellent =)))

Enjoyed the game a lot, can't wait for any potential continuation.

I'm fine with things being on WorldAnvil and it's convenient for me, but my worry is that people won't bother looking at it, and things being in thread is much more visible and obvious.

I think it was too easy and consequence free to just die and respawn anywhere. In my opinion, there should be some negative consequence to your death such that you want to avoid it if possible. Maybe all units, including player units, take 1 full turn just to spawn. Maybe only a limited number can spawn from any given hive in one turn. Maybe spawning consumes a limited "biomass" resource. Many ways you could do it, but I don't like that we can spawn for free and act instantly after dying.

I loved the change in seasons, and I thought the dynamic world was a really cool idea. The environment could have been more impactful though; outside of the central area completely denying fliers, I didn't feel like the environment did much to influence gameplay outside of providing biomass and restricting movement. I'd love to see an expansion of environment diversity and impact. Also, the yak farts, while humorous, were way too easy to avoid, even if you were oblivious to the mechanic.

Can we get a full fog-less version of the map? I'd like to see what that fabricator in the North got up to, and what else happened in the South.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

>May we know what that huge platform at HF1 was for or a glimpse/teaser trailer.
Nothing, I hadn't designed it yet. Since it would take at least two turns to build what I wanted I created the platform before I created what it would build. There was a unit I had planned that I didn't get to deploy though...

Nothing much DESU the hidden fabricators in the south just made tactical bombers in the end and the north fabricator didn't make anything you hadn't seen. I think it pumped out an air superiority fighter before I ran into the unit cap.

That was fun, even if I only joined at the end. I'm looking forward to the next game, hopefully bigger and a little more balanced.

I actually found having World Anvil open on another tab more convenient than searching the thread for that info.

Thanks for running, love your skrims.
I have a question: is it possible to make hive manufacture metal bugs similar to Ultra-Mecha Fly? Doubt I'll be able to play AI and that's my best alternative.
Also post unfogged map.

Thanks for running! I had fun.
World Anvil is alright, much better than scrolling up the thread any time you need a reference.
Mega Mercs when?

I agree with this, but I'd appreciate an intelligence report memo whenever a new unit is added to the worldevil database. Ideally have all the enemy units also posted here, but I understand if that's too much work.

Fine, but there's not much else to see, just some Yaks I forgot to make visible, a bomber and the mecha flies I never got to use.

>is it possible to make hive manufacture metal bugs similar to Ultra-Mecha Fly?
The short answer is yes, the long answer is you gotta tell me how you evolve to become that, especially if you want to make full on machine bugs rather than just a biological equivalent with similar capabilities.

>World Anvil Feedback
I think going forward I'll post small images with only the new stuff in thread but keep the compiled master versions on world anvil.

Oh wait, there was a research facility up north you guys never found just one hex below the top of the map. Forgot to make that one visible before exporting.

>the long answer
Well, either evolve hivemind until it can manufacture biological organisms with metallic properties (what I was going for with gold and mimicking guns, strapping armor plates to a bug), or make a hive that works as a small factory to make legit mechanical shells and then supply them with a nervous system, creating proper cyborgs.
Dunno how I'll end up going about it, that depends on circumstances and opportunities we get. I only know that I like machines.
>map
So you've already deployed two UMFs, huh? We got lucky.

in the discord i advised hiding the bomber same reach but its unseen thats why i hoped it would be extended by a round or 2 as then AI could have had any chance.
also we would probably be really good catching dissolved metal from water using bacteria
>>5345590
nice not bad as skitter was sort of trying to destroy the research center eventually
>>
>>5345625
I’m thinking we should create some form of symbiosis instead of competition between our factions, imagine the potential! Not to mention I’m pretty sure they shot first thinking we where some diabolical destructive force while we merely killed a couple heads of cattle and froge, we did not that much to this planets ecosystem in the long run

More like creating a no go zone between the research center and the hive
