/qst/ - Quests

Gaol Quest: a text adventure occasionally illustrated.

For your various (alleged) crimes against the Eternal Empire, the High Magistrate had sentenced you to life, and thrown you into the Gongalla Gaol: the pit of despair, the mistake of architecture and magic, the continent-sized holding facility. Thankfully, as per the required humanoid decency act, you are issued your mandatory spoon... for what good it does.

PREVIOUSLY, ON GAOL QUEST

Everything culminates to this point.
>>
>>5319064

And what point it is, on a dagger made of cthonic bones - if this dagger has need of a name, it would be Extinction's Blade.

"Are you sure about this, handsome?" Petunia asks, with concern and yet curiosity in her voice. Considering you're about to mercy kill a dead god, her caution is reasonable.
"By the Revolution, yes. The old needs to make way for the new." You grip the admittedly huge dagger tightly, and start to head towards Tezcatlipoca's chest, where a bleached white mirror sat.
"Well, where would we get a new deity to replace him?" Petunia follows suit behind you.
"I have a good idea, don't you worry." The mirror reminds you of ice, the way its reflection goes, but without the slipperiness. You hold the dagger high, above the centerpoint of the mirror.
Petunia also grips the handle, from the other side. "Welp, count me in as your accomplice, handsome."
You nod. "Whatever happens..."
Petunia nods. "Happens."
>>
>>5319068
Together, the dagger plunges cleanly through the mirror, and cleaves it in half under your feet. In the next instant, a blackish-blue darkness erupts from the wound, making a hissing sound like a silent whistle. Tezcatlipoca's godly essence pours upwards in a thickening, billowing cloud. For a second, you thought you'd lost yourself in that endless abyss of night.
>>
>>5319072
Meanwhile, back in Goblinton, Sierra was discussing future Beauty Pageants with the liquid vendor when she suddenly turns her head.

"What's the matter?"
"It is calling me. I must go." Sierra turns towards a single direction.

And then she runs.
Fast.

In a blink, she's cleared the Cubicle forests that surrounds Goblinton.
Faster.

The next moment, and she zips past the hilly outskirts of Wreck, ignoring the ships.
Even faster.

She is speed incarnate as she reaches the city of Crack, everything else seem still to her as she climbs the nearest ladder available and jets towards the aperture Lucifer cut into the crack.
>>
>>5319077
You shake your head from the impact with the floor of this pocket reality.
"Petunia?!"
"Here, handsome! I had to yank you off the mirror, it started to lose coherence. This place's starting to fall apart."
"Come on, head towards the slash, back outside!" You yell, when a certain plastic someone bursts through the rift.

"Fret not, for I am here." Sierra states.
>>
>>5319078
You can only stare in awe as a chorus slowly rises to be heard.

GOSPODI GOSPODI
LYUBIMAYA GOSPODI

Petunia also froze in disbelief as Sierra's prison collar and bangles disappear, as well as her prison uniform. She then grabs Tezcatlipoca's essence of night and pulls it up - you haven't even realized that she grew in size.

The new divinity that was your comrade spoke in the same chorus you've heard. "Now go, you two. Farewell, for now."
>>

https://youtu.be/Whuf6C_T8tc

It was a blur.
The next thing you remember, you're already outside the Crack - which no longer murmurs with static. Just a field of white, and a closing rend. Beside you sat Petunia, and she takes her helmet off.

"Whoa, that was quite an adventure, handsome!" Petunia says, out of breath.
"Well, here's hoping that fixed Gongalla, somehow. Say, Petunia?"
"Yes, handsome?"
"I love you, let's get married."
"Aw! I love you too, handsome. Yes, let's!"

You hold her hands in yours, as you both look outside, towards a sunset in the horizon.

Very nice!
>WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE ENTIRE QUEST?
It was great, i was here since the start and i liked all the threads. The characters were fun, the plot was fun. I liked it
>ANY CRITIQUE, SUGGESTIONS, SPINOFF IDEAS FOR THE QUEST AND/OR SETTING?
Well, critique-wise, some other anon said it best, but there weren't really any villains. Basically all character that we thought to be villains turned out to be good or at least on our side.

Spinoff wise, i'd take pretty much anything. Maybe something in the future, given the Empire is in a pretty bad situation and Gongalla is going to become a good city.
>□ A character's fate after the end (fill in)
Personally, i want to see our main couple in the future, obviously.
>□ Gongalla in the future (fill in)
Because we also got hints about it.
>>
Congratulations for finishing the quest. It was pretty good.
>>
Congrats on finishing! Didn't get the chance to read all the threads myself, but the artstyle's very charming and the plot/lore was solid.
>>
>>5319090
thanks for running good quest
the idea of a mannequin god and how it was presented in the dream was very cool
it felt meandering at times and i dropped off a few times but all that's well ends well

>>AND LASTLY, WHAT EPILOGUE(S) DO YOU WANT TO SEE?
scene of Ko viciously breeding Gobson please
>>
>>5319116
Great quest! Was lots of fun and characters were charming. Do you have any idea what you plan to run next?

>WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE ENTIRE QUEST?
Good stuff! Very unique, memorable characters, and all in all not a bad ride!

>ANY CRITIQUE, SUGGESTIONS, SPINOFF IDEAS FOR THE QUEST AND/OR SETTING?
It's nothing big, but I feel like there wasn't much tension in anything we did, really, even when Gongalla was going to collapse. Like some of the other anons said, all the would-be antagonists kinda rolled over and became our pals really quickly and there didn't seem to be much at stake halfway through. That said I know quests tend to be pretty improvisational, so I took that all with a grain of salt.

I really dig the reality-bending setting of Gongalla and wouldn't mind seeing it more. Maybe if there was a spin-off from the perspective of someone from one of the other factions?

>AND LASTLY, WHAT EPILOGUE(S) DO YOU WANT TO SEE?
>□ Gongalla in the future (fill in)
Because we kinda made a bit alteration just now.
>□ A character's fate after the end (fill in)
James please

Thanks again for running and congrats on finishing it! It's been a blast!
>>
>WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE ENTIRE QUEST?
Enjoyed it. Wish I'd caught it sooner then I did.

>□ A character's fate after the end (fill in)
Ko/Gobson

>>5319452
A spin off from the dance-fighting one-shot, perhaps? Disco Dictator?
>>
>WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE ENTIRE QUEST?
Great, been with it since the first thread. Very charming, a little lewd. I think it would be a great setting for an RPG with a surreal side. There's a lot to work with in this world.

>ANY CRITIQUE, SUGGESTIONS, SPINOFF IDEAS FOR THE QUEST AND/OR SETTING?
Character traits never seemed to come into strong play, and like one anon said there wasn't much tension. A lot of story elements got introduced but never seemed to go much further which with so many plot threads made me wonder what the heck was going on much of the time. I kinda stopped caring and stuck around mostly for the wild ride.

>AND LASTLY, WHAT EPILOGUE(S) DO YOU WANT TO SEE?

>EPILOGUE VIGNETTE: WEDDINGS

True to their promise to each other, James and Petunia got married soon after returning from their adventure, in Goblinton. It was a modest ceremony attended by friends, comrades, and acquaintances (excepting Sierra, who by now had mantled the Reality Anchor) - but the entirety of Goblinton threw an improptu parade anyways. The newlywed couple then went on a honeymoon across Gongalla, and finally settled somewhere between Goblinton and Zimmingham, where James built a farm.

After dating for another year, Gobson and Ko finally had their own marriage ceremony, a fusion between Orcish and Goblin traditions. They stayed in Goblinton and had 11 kids, and still kept in touch with James and Petunia.

Veri nice
>>
>>5320597
is this supposed to be the gobson from that other thread that inevitably devolved into the author just being a (insert rude words here)
>>
This quest was a lot of fun! I loved the tongue-in-cheek and easily likable characters. Though I agree there wasn't as much of a sense of direness and risk as one would be expecting from a story about escaping a continent-sized prison.
The variety and range of places and characters really did make it feel like a place where creatures from hundreds of worlds were dropped together to try to ecke out a living.

On what I would like to see as far as epilogues go, it would be:
>The fate of the main cast.
>Gongala in the future.
>The Eternal Empire in the future.

An idea for a spin-off could be a story from the point of view of a citizen of the Eternal Empire, either close to the capital, or in one of its expansionist conflicts.
>>
Oh, also to keep things interesting, here's another option for the Epilogues:
>□ The roads not taken (alternate paths if we chose something different)
>>
>>5321424
>□ The roads not taken (alternate paths if we chose something different)

Well, now that you've offered us this peek behind the roads not taken... let's take a peek.
>>
>>5321636
You choose which untaken path, because there's loads of them in the quest. Pick a choice moment, perhaps?
>>
>>5321682
I had an idea, but given the ending, it wouldn't have mattered anyway
>>
>>5321682
Say, what about if we had decided not to be in a couple with Petunia?
>>
>>5321810
Do tell anyway, it's the scene that counts.

>EPILOGUE VIGNETTE: PETUNIA, RE-OCCURING VILLAIN

An ambush! And led by that loathsome horny nerd girl and her three minions, no less.
"Aha, I've got you now, handsome! Come now, join my harem already!" Her voice grates your nerves, ever since you first met her.
"You again?! I thought you've learned your lesson by now - don't mess with James Calaca!" You prepare to lay the smackdown on her, and not the kind she'll enjoy.
"Oh, I wouldn't be so sure about that. Rubeda bros, get him! First one to capture him gets fucking privilege for a week!"
Wait what? Is that why all three of them are hard down under? Damn, guess you gotta bully this nerd even more!

>EPILOGUE VIGNETTE: PETUNIA, FORSAKEN

You scarcely had time to react as yet another slash comes your way, barely deflected by your spoon. There's no doubt, this is indeed the rumored 'naked reaper'! Her movements are quick and athletic, almost dancelike - and to top it off she has next to no presence nor bloodthirst, as if she's a ghost. You've heard that such stealth is only possible by those who had been spurned for far too long, that they gave up on the world and let despair dictate their actions.
How could you fight someone who had discarded every emotion?
>>
>>5322068
Wow, extra lewd...
In any case, I didn't think to mention this the previous post but I found your quest great though I'd say it felt a bit hurried at the end: at thread 7, it felt like you could have really started expanding on the setting and really gone on more adventures.
I don't really hold it against you though, it's really reefreshing to see a quest actually end around here...

Is there anything you wish you'd done differently with the quest or are you globally satisfied with how it turned out?
>>
>>5322068
>Do tell anyway, it's the scene that counts.
Hmm, well, it was more so that i was wondering if we took the other choice back when you had the whole thing about petunia being jealous of sierra? One of the option was to joke about a threesome.

Honestly though, it feels dumb to only ask about the romantical side of things. It would have also been cool to see what happened if we had actually revived the deity to full power.
>>
>>5322078
More or less satisfied that I can finally run a quest from start to finish. I had intended for Gaol to run for at max 10 threads, and making that 'deadline' feels good.

>>5320734
Kinda based on that goblin quest - at least the name.

>>5319784
>>5319452
It's going to be called Fall of the Reign, where we will be playing as a lich dictator.

BTW, any chance we might learn more about the Eternal Empress? We kinda saw here in a rush last thread and I wish we'd had more time to discuss with her and learn more about the outside world, her point of view and such things.

>EPILOGUE VIGNETTE: THE REALMS AROUND THE ETERNAL EMPIRE

>The Eternal Empire: Heartlands
The homeland, core, and seat of power of the Eternal Empire. Prior to discovering inter-realm travel, the Empire had conquered, subjugated or subsumed the other nations in its world. The Empress became the first person from her realm to step into another realm, and became immortal as a side effect. Soon after, the Eternal Empire launched subjugation attempts at nearby realms, and prospered from their conquests - at least for some time.
Domestic problems arose due to the overly authoritarian government and constant wars bringing an influx of dispossesed veterans, signaling the beginning of the downfall - but it was the arrival and intersection with the Singularity that broke it. Billions of refugees flood the neighboring realms as the Heartlands became unstable and flux-ridden.

>Hinomaru
One of the few realms that willingly joined with the Eternal Empire, they were but a technologically inferior realm before the integration. But, they progressed in leaps and bounds afterwards, becoming the technological center of the Empire. They have also managed to promote their culture across to the other realms of the Eternal Empire since, in the form of Anime.
After the Singularity hit the Heartlands, Hinomaru took in the most refugees, and became the seat of the Empire-in-Exile - that is, until the Eternal Empress abdicated the throne and went to Gongalla.

>Libertad
When the Eternal Empire invaded, Libertad was only slightly technologically behind, and fought tooth and nail - although in the end the Empire was victorious. Libertad was modernized and became a source of workers for the Empire, although the animosity from the natives still remain.
After the Singularity hit the Heartlands and the refugees started coming, Libertad wised up to the situation and a great revolution occurred. A short guerilla war ensued, ending with the liberation of Libertad.

>Anima Mundi
A realm not yet subjugated by the Empire, it possessed similar levels of technology to the Empire - but alas, it was hit by the Singularity before the Heartland did. Some refugees from this realm managed to gain access to inter-realm teleportation technology to survive, and now they're spread out in a diaspora.
>>
>>5324312

>Predator Kings: Tmavy Les
The homeworld of the Boogeymen and necromancy. Initially, the Predator Kings were the ones who tried to invade Heartlands and failed - then the Empire counterattacked and subjugated them. Scars of war can still be seen all over the realm, its once-vicious inhabitants now fearful and cautious.
Only a few refugee groups entered after the Singularity hit the Heartlands. The locals either don't know, or don't care about it.

>Mainframe Masters: Central Node
Populated by robots, androids and artificial intelligences with technologies more advanced than the Empire, the Empire subjugated this realm after a long, bloody war in search for new technologies. The Mainframe Masters was only defeated after the Empire pinpointed a crucial communications node and managed to hack it, rendering the majority of the robots and AI disconnected from each other.
Only a scant few refugees from Heartland arrived here.

>Infernal Realms: Pandemonium
Also known in many other realms as Hell, it became yet another Empire colony-realm after a subjugation war. Apparently the Eternal Empress herself decided to invade after losing a beloved consort, but this is probably just hearsay.
Only a scant few refugees from Heartlands arrived here, mostly once-repatriated demons returning to their homelands.

>Nowhere
Not a realm per se, but something outside it. All of the realms are firmly in the Is, and Nowhere is firmly in the Is-Not - usually, that is. Sometimes things from Nowhere somehow manifested in the Is, but usually they're ephemereal, quantum-subparticle small things. But an experimental foray into inter-realm technology had managed to spot a vacant space, a vacuousness, in Nowhere that could be stabilized - and that became Gongalla Gaol. The rest of the Is-Not and Nowhere still exist - or rather, not exist.
>>
>>5324312
>>5324319
Pretty damn interesting, i have to say. A shame we didn't see much of the empire in the quest.
>>
>>5324312
>>5324319
Extra neat!
Is your next quest gonna have any relevance with this setting or are you planning on starting over?
>>
>>5324347
Yea, the Eternal Empire isn't the focus here. Gongalla is.

>>5324373
Different setting, perhaps - but be on the lookout for cameos. Fall of the Regime is going to be more focused on nation-building (or its equivalent of patching a sinking ship).
Be on the lookout for the thread sometime in July.

That said - feel free to use Gongalla, the Eternal Empire etc. in your own quests, stories, campaigns and/or art. The more the merrier!
>>
>>5324509
>Fall of the Regime is going to be more focused on nation-building (or its equivalent of patching a sinking ship).
Does that mean it's gonna be a civ?
>>
>>5324518
Sorta like spess monke kinda civ, only that the leader never changes.
