Two-thousand years before the birth of Christ, a people divorced from all civilization emerges from the cave they call home, naked and hopeless, they are ready to leave behind the world of their forefathers and venture out into the unknown.

Ktk Okh Rrtegkhm, the name of the man who has to lead these desperate people to a new future. A frail old man with poor temper, known in his youth for his unruly behavior. This man has never seen the desert before, he had always known it was there, but the cave had protected him and his people for countless generations, there was never a need to leave, but no longer. This sorry excuse of a chief is none other than you.

Where will you take your people?

You follow the face of the mountain toward the Sunrise, unsure of what the future might bring.
Two days pass with no issues, but starting with the third day, the lack of water has become a hazard to your people, and you especially.
An sickly old man like yourself should not be leading people through the desert.
You were never meant to be chief anyway, but the quake that caused the cave-in robbing us of our precious water, also robbed you of your kin.
After four days, the heat has killed its first man.
On the fifth, a child had perished.
The day after that, the people in their desperation turn to you, the one who is most likely next to die.
They ask for your guidance in a matter that would be unthinkable normally...
Your people ask permission to drink the blood of the dead.

Appalled by this blatant disrespect of the dead, you strike the idea down immediately. Pragmatic as it may be, who knows what kind of disaster could befall us if we were to desecrate the dead during this time of weakness.
You refuse to even think about the possible consequences and instead urge your people to press on.

The sixth day passes without further incident
On the seventh day, your people seem more motivated than before, no doubt the last struggles of the dying.
The eighth day has dashed all previous optimism, and the dead are in the dozens.
The ninth day at last, brings ease of mind, as in the distance, a few young men spotted a lake nearby.
Upon our arrival we can see shapes in the distance, they look human, but something about them seems wrong, they look as though they have fur from head to toe.

Suspicious of these furred people, you decide to wait it out.
As night falls on the ninth day, they finally leave and your people approach the lake.
Compared to what you've known, it is titanic in scale, indeed it might be bigger than your cave, judging by the fact that despite any attempts to look for the other side, it's simply out of sight.

A day passes and the lake has provided us with new strength. Though some of our people, including yourself, have not quite recovered yet, so you stay a few more days.
The longer your stay, the stranger this place becomes.

The landscape is jagged and scary, the mountains running in perfect parallel to one another, the lake being full of furless animals that don't breathe, and our people's shining white skin turning red like fire, and hurting as such.

The outer world is a place full of unspeakable evils, it is no wonder then, that we have never left the inner world.
Now that we have recovered however, we must decide on a new course of action.

As the skins of those afflicted by redness begins to peel off, and the realization dawns upon you that despite the size of the lake, there is not a plant in sight, it becomes readily apparent that the lake is a cursed, unholy place.

We continue on our way east, along the mountains.
As we have no means of storing water, many pray that this journey will be short.

On the first day, we went along the lake, staying within its vicinity for continued water supply, it was a very slow walk.
The second day, we picked up the pace, invigorated by everyone's good health, even those suffering from redness, we make the most of our strength and walk at twice the speed we normally would.

Day three, we return to normal, as the heat begins to continue its merciless attack on our stamina.

The fourth and fifth resemble the last march, the desert has taken its toll again, and it will only become worse from here, despite that your people seem more resilient than the first time, at least there's no talk of desecrating the dead this time around.

A young man comes up to you and claims to have seen animals nearby

You trust the lad's words and assemble a hunting party to bring back some food.
As the party of about a dozen boys leave, you find a singular solitary tree in the middle of nowhere, and decide to take shade under it.
Many of your people huddle together to get some shade too, resulting in nearly four dozen people squishing against each other akin to an orgy.

As the day slowly draws to a close, the young men return with meager, but tangible results.
Five creatures had been caught and slain, these man-birds look even more bizarre than they sound.
Of course, this isn't nearly enough to feed the close-to three hundred people you command.

How do we distribute the food?

>split it among women and children
>give it to the sick and elderly

The birds are butchered to the best our abilities, netting us enough food to feed barely one hundred people, which goes directly to all the women and children.
Some of the women share their ration with their husbands, or give their children some extra, but by and large, everyone that was given food was sated for the day.

Thus ends the sixth day.

The seventh and eighth days are a chore as the days before them, more of our people have died of thirst, but at least fewer women died than men, the children despite their complaints, are doing the best of all of us.

The ninth day has us yet again on the brink of total annihilation, but by the end of it a new hope came into view.

On the tenth day, we arrived at a lake, surrounded by greenery.
A few creatures are here too, these aren't man-birds however, as the hunter boys confirmed, no, these are the furred people again.

Your people are getting tired of migrating.

Upon approaching the lake and its surrounding greenery, some of the furred people flee at the sight of us, but the ones that remained seemed more cautious than hostile.
You get closer to them in an attempt to communicate.
They speak words at you, most certainly, while pointing at your loins and flailing their arms about wildly. Whatever it is they're saying, they seem pretty angry.
After a few moments of this, one removes all the hair from its head, revealing a second set of hair underneath and a normal face. It then proceeds to wrap its removed fur around you waist and loins.

This gesture has seemed to ease their minds a little, but they're still visibly upset about your people for some reason.
If you had to guess, it must be because we do not possess fur around our loins.

What do we do?

Since their upset at our lack of fur is readily apparent, you try to ease the tension a little.
Gesturing vaguely at yourself, then at their fur, you shake your head.
You repeat this motion, but the second time you gesture at the fur they have given you, instead of them.

One of them approaches you slowly, taking the fur off his head, then putting it back on, points at you, and shakes his head, giving you a questioning look.

You nod in response and he returns to the others, they talk about something and one runs off to the people who fled.
Shortly thereafter, he returns with his tribe in tow.

It is apparent that we outnumber them, but they don't seem to have gathered with hostile intent.
Everyone takes off their head-furs and gives one to each of your people.
When they ran out, a few took off their massive body furs and pulled them over the remaining members our people.

Astonishingly, underneath all that fur, they look just like us, just a little darker.

With a reverent bow, you thank them for their generous reception of your people. Though they don't know the words you've spoken, you have a feeling they know what it is you said.

Your people take rest at the lake, and mingle with the natives, while you yourself take count of the survivors.

87 women, 25 girls, and 14 old women
51 men, 32 boys, and 7 old men; 8 if you count yourself

of the original two thousand or so tribesmen, a little over three hundred made it out of the caves to begin with
and of those, a good third died on their way here.
A more than tragic fate for your people.

Two years have passed since you've arrived here, and in that time, the lake had dried out.
Your people were ready to leave again when that happened, but the natives, whom we have learned are "Hamatsik" have told us that this is a regular occurrence, and that within two years it will be full again.
Until then, the water is still there underneath, it is however sparse and should not be wasted, an advice our people take to heart.

In these few years we have spent with them, we have learned how to harvest the fur of animals, and work them into the man-furs the Hamatsik wear, lending us protection from the sun.

As life stabilizes once more, several women, who are lacking husbands, offer themselves to be your wives.

You don't think you have it in you anymore to have multiple wives, but the youngest looks nice, so you take her.

While the memory of your family still burns brightly in your mind, mourning over your sons won't bring them back, so you try for a new one in your last years.

In the meantime, you marry off the single women to the Hamatsik, and the odd nomads that come by, on the condition they settle with us.

After a few more years, you are blessed not just with one son, but two - twins.

Though the seasons here are different than back in the inner world, you approximate the time of year it should be right now.

your sons...
Gkhm Raal Ktkprokh
and
Gkhm Yoro Ktkprokh
they shall lead the tribe in your stead, together, as one.

these were your last words
still, they are but infants and cannot lead our people in the meantime.
It has fallen upon their mother Prokh Fala Darrkhturun to keep the peace and raise the heirs of her husband.

You stand before the other women and proudly announce the last words of your husband, holding in each arm, one of your twin boys, as they suckle on your breasts.

For as much as you cherish them, they cannot yet lead the tribe. You ask them whether any of the men should do it, trampling Ktk's legacy, or whether the women themselves would like a shot, dishonoring you, the queen-mother.

Ktk left the future of our people, his sons, in your care, this is not something you will let them take away from you.

The women are dumbstruck, while the men nod in quiet agreement.

A few more years go by afterward, and the Hamatsik's hospitality is wearing thin, though they enjoy our people's company, their village is simply too small for this many people.

Raal and Yoro meanwhile have grown into toddlers barely capable of walking, they misbehave quite frequently around the other children.

You beat some sense into your boys for being mean to other children. They might cry now, but they're boys, they'll stop soon enough and learn their lesson, kings should not bully their tribe!

In the mean time, the tribe's elders and you try to figure out what to do about the Hamatsik's waning patience.
After some deliberation, it is unanimously agreed upon to build our own caves, since us occupying the ones of the Hamatsik is their chief complaint.

During the day, we stay inside with them, but at night we use the cold to work.
The men dig holes, and the women tend to their scraped and bruised hands, bring them water, and relief their urges.

They dig until they hit stone, from there, they grab a few pieces of rock and chip away at the stone.
One by one, day by day, the men put their backs into fighting the very foundation of reality, so that we may have an innerworld again, even if it's a fake.

Though they're not of much use, even your little kings try their best, if they're still awake.

Seasons come and go, and after a few years, our tribe moves back into the innerworld, one of our own making, and the Hamatsik seem in awe at our cave being so much bigger than their little ones.
This is a proud day for all of us.

While the men spent the past couple years digging out our new cave, they noticed that the heavy and pointier rocks both were better at carving through stone than any other old rocks.
And now that one of our chief worries has been taken care, the younger of the men start banging rocks together, deliberately shaping them into something like a wedge, but pointier.
These are no small rocks either, they're pretty big, not fully fitting into one hand.
They look rather clumsy in handling them, it's kind of cute, but eventually they figure out a way to use these pointy wedges effectively.

Holding the tool in both hands, and swinging with the foll force of their arms, over their heads, they smash the wedge into the walls of the cave and...there's a dent, a big one, these aren't like the chips the men made previously.

The young men cheer at their success, but the rest of us can't share in it, not sure why.

As time passes and your boys grow from toddlers to children proper, the men of the tribe spend their time making tools, hunting man-birds, and slowly expanding our cave.
The women on the other hand, have little to do, so we turn to the Hamatsik who clearly know a thing or two about tending to plants.
Despite the fact we've been doing this back in the innerworld already, the Hamatsik just seem better at it, taking seeds and putting them in the ground, making plants grow there on purpose. Such a simple thing, yet we never thought of it.

They show us how to cultivate the basic plants of their diet: A yellow grass we've come to call "Khesh" for the sound it makes when you chew it; as well as a mighty tree bearing yellow-brown fruits we call "Nerte" because their skin feels like that of an old person.

Though Nerte trees, we are told, take half a generation to grow, Khesh grows within the short wet-season and excess can be stored until the next harvest, and soon become the staple of our diet as well.

By the time your boys have reached adolescence, we have gotten used to this new life in the outerworld.
We farm Khesh and Nerte, make man-furs from animal hair, dug a new innerworld and are expanding it, and finding ways to make all of these things easier to do.

One such way is to divide up the work between men and women and what they're good at.
While you and the women take care of light labor, like farming and weaving, the men take care of heavy labor, like mining and hunting.

As you all live together, undivided, in a single-roomed cave, child-rearing befalls the entire tribe rather than any one person.

Though nothing binds us to these behaviors, we have simply come to expect them.

Your childhood was an unusual one in the tribe, born in the outerworld, growing up without a father, and witnessing change that none of your ancestors could have ever dreamed of.
As you reach adulthood, you and your brother witness yet another innovation, flat rocks getting knapped to roughly resemble the shape of a human hand. With these, the men of your tribe move the earth faster, and safer, than they would with their hands.

In a world full of wonders such as this, neither of you can really understand why your elders are so melancholic for a world, that they describe as stagnant, never changing.

Irreverent as it might sound, the time of these relics is over, whether they like it or not, things will change, or your name isn't....

You and Raal are in agreement for most things concerning the tribe, but one issue brought to your attention, now that the two of you are kings, is that we have lost a significant part of our heritage, a heritage that you - for the most part - don't even know.

As eager to bring change as you are, you cannot change that which you don't know.
Raal has an idea on how to go about this, so you should worry about other things for now.

Wearing man-furs is a new thing in your tribe, you've grown up with it of course, but your elders don't like it, they miss being naked.
The Hamatsik don't like us being naked, for reasons they won't tell.
Neither you nor your brother want to upset your tribesmen, not so shortly after becoming adults.
A way must be found to appease both the sensibilities of your people and your neighbors.
But for this, you need to first gain some understanding of why we are naked, and the Hamatsik are dressed.

Inquiring into both peoples and their motives, it becomes clear why such a different approach to fighting warmth has developed.

Despite the warmth of the air, the exposed stone of the innerworld is cold, soothingly so, it is preferable to have it touch your skin and cool you off that way.
Man-furs meanwhile, while warm, keep you somewhat cool in the scorching heat of the outerworld and prevent redness - a disease which has befallen our tribe ever since their migration.

Equipped with this knowledge, you spread it to your people and argue that they should be as thickly dressed as the Hamatsik when outside, and remain naked when inside.

This makes sense to the tribe, and they follow your instructions.

Raal goes a step further and covers the entrance to the innerworld from top to bottom with man-fur, arranged into a movable wall.
He argues that if man-fur contains the heat, then putting it on the threshold of inside and outside, will keep some of the hot air out, and in turn make it more pleasant in the innerworld.

A flawless line of thought, but your people are skeptical.
They don't seem to question it though, not like it intrudes upon their lives in any way.

It has been some years since you've become adults, and others who were born during your childhood, became adults themselves in that time.
You have spent it mostly on pioneering new tools for the other men to use, though finding a more efficient mining shape than the pickaxe is difficult, as you've yet to come up with something.
The supportive young men, whom you grew up with, however took note of your endeavors and tried to emulate them. Though it didn't yield any new tools yet, it lead to something different, new techniques.
Your combined efforts have yielded not a physical tool to wield, but a mental tool to make not only mining easier, but shaping stone in general.
Pickaxes are built and repaired much faster, and some have even begun to work stones into art pieces, albeit...lacking.

Raal has used this time to gather the memories of the elderly and the other survivors of the migration.
He has come to you, bursting with knowledge of our past, our traditions, our heritage.

You've elected to not worry about such an important issue and leave it to your twin brother, and now here he is, having truly solved it as he had promised.

You could hear him out now, or later, as long as he's there, this knowledge will be preserved.

Though nomads and the odd trader come by every wet season, usually we don't have anything to give them in exchange for items we might desire.
So you decide to emulate the Hamatsik and try to bargain with one such trader.

At first, simply offering him food for some of the shiny brown rocks he carries, doesn't quite cut it. Even the offer of a wife fails to sway him.
Though by mere chance, and probably the trader's good will, he offers to trade a small rock in exchange for - what is to you - a worthless piece of furniture: A Man-bird carved from rock.
He seems to like it.

Though the piece of rock you traded for seems equally worthless in your eyes, the Hamatsik tell you that it is something called "Nihas" a rare material whence weapons are made

Truth be told however, you only wanted it because it looked pretty.

As the years pass, you let Raal tell you stories of our tribe, every time another one. They're not the most exciting, but they are interesting for what they're worth, it certainly beats having to listen to the old folks rambling on and on with no sense of coherence.

Innumerable generations ago, we supposedly lived out here already, when this whole wasteland was supposedly green and brimming with life.
The animals that once lived here are all long gone, yet we remember them with the names we give our children.

Rrte - were horned beasts, taller than a man, and twice as long. Our ancestors hunted them for their flesh and horn.

Ktk - were running beasts, faster than a man, and just as enduring. Our ancestors admired them.

Gkhm - were trickster beasts, they all looked the same, and lines all over. Our ancestors thought them mysterious.

Prokh - were lurking beasts, their skin rough like mountains, their teeth sharp like spikes. Our ancestors avoided them.

Urekh - are poison beasts, they're smooth and silent, hiding in the ground. Our ancestors say they were bigger then, but they hated them same as we do.

Fenhn - were child beasts, they looked like tiny men and acted like children. Our ancestors were amused by them.

Goshr - are stinger beasts, they're tiny and aggressive, one wrong step and they might kill you. Our ancestors respected them, but kept their distance, same as today.

Inoft - are digging beasts, they might be timid, but are excellent hunters. Our ancestors considered them pest control, just like us.

Mekhti - were hopping beasts, hard to catch but easy to kill, there used to be hordes of them. Our ancestors thought they were delicious.

Tkthra - were swimming beasts, their bodies bloated and smooth. Our ancestors feared them.

Khinot - were wandering beasts, big, docile creatures constantly wandering around for food. Our ancestors used them as guides.

Unfortunately, the origins of the names Akhl, Atkrr, Esl, Khpf, Lokhtl, Nhli, Otiap, Paknhn, Tenhl, Ttl, Voifpo, Vumu, and Yoptkia have been lost to time.

Likewise, most other aspects of your culture has been buried in the ruins of the innerworld, what we have now is merely a fraction of who we once were.

Similarly, we have lost our feeling for time, as these names were supposed to be bestowed upon a child at specific times of years, and times of day.
Yet here in the outerworld, time flows differently, and we cannot make out the supposed 12 seasons of day and 12 seasons of night.
However, a sense of order in these names remains, an idea of who comes first, and what partner they have.

If we don't come up with some way to salvage this, the most integral part of our remaining heritage will cease to be.

Some more years pass, you've traded a fair amount of nihas for your animal figures, but don't know what to do with it.
You take this issue to the Hamatsik, since they know what this is.

They take you behind their caves and show you a place where you can turn nihas into any shape you want.

They explain the procedure to you, plain and simple.
Take the nihas, put it in the portable hole, insert it into the fire-device, wait for it to become liquid, then pour it into a shape of your chosing, and wait for it to become a rock again.
Free it from the shape, and it is done.

The Hamatsik show you the procedure once, and then leave you to your fate.
You try your best to replicate what they did, step by step. The shape you've chosen to make for this is a portable hole, since you've never seen anything like it before. It fulfills the same purpose as your hands when you lay your palms side by side to drink water.

Upon completion of the process, you unveil your portable hole made of nihas. You decide to dub it water-hands.

In exchange for sharing stories with you, you share this newly gained knowledge with Raal, so he may spread it. Not that it is of much use, given that only you have nihas.

Although the sun is a constant source of suffering, the outerworld itself isn't all that bad, many have come to realize.
In our free time - which is most of the time - we mostly converse with each other, or work on our hobbies, like hunting bugs or shaping rocks.
But Raal finds these activities dull, he'd much rather play proper games, like he did back when we were children.
You completely agree, and together the two of you try to come up with games for adults to play.
You figure that the best way to make a game suitable for grown men, is to make it a competition of some sort, a measure of ability, no matter how silly.

Together you come up with a bunch of nonsense:
-Throwing a big rock and measuring who threw it farthest
-Getting from one place to another as quickly as possible, while crawling across the ground like a bug
-Knocking over stuff by throwing small rocks at it
-Holding each other's hands and pushing against them until one topples
-Pulling each other's legs with kicks, until one falls
-Climbing a tree, picking nerte, and coming back down before the other does so.
-Dueling with sharpened rocks until one breaks the tip of his
-Getting spun to dizziness before having to walk to your friend without stumbling
-Catching a rock that is being thrown back and forth, until one drops it.
-Holding a long piece of man-fur in your mouth and pulling until the opponent is pulled to the ground.

[brought to you by Tie Breaker(TM)]

Raal and you try out your ideas at day, when everyone is up and about. Most of your actions seem insane to them. Though as you begin fighting each other with kicks, a small crowd joins to watch, probably out of curiosity than actual interest.
When you start hitting targets however, the crowd grows significantly.
As you begin chucking the big rocks, almost the entire tribe has gathered around you, and even some curious Hamatsik.
By the end of it, you went back to fighting, this time with your hands, and the crowd cheers in amusement, instinctively taking bets on who will win.

The fight ends in Raal's victory, and the crowd cheers while you're busy picking the pebble that made you fall, out of your foot.
With a brotherly hug the two of you congratulate each other on a job well-done, and in the coming days, more and more people fight their boredom by throwing rocks, hitting targets, and pushing each other around.

Your people have taken to your new games quite well. Most men seem to have a preference for the strength feat of hurling big and heavy rocks. Children and the elderly enjoy hitting targets the most. Women favor to push each other, though some men are here too.

Now that these adult games are part of our daily lives, boredom has set in for you and Raal again. The two of you are simply restless.
In an effort to relax, you observe the stars together, hoping to find wisdom in these mysterious lights illuminating the night sky.

You find it rather fun to draw lines in your head, connecting the dots up above, to make shapes.
Most prominently currently in the sky, is the shape of a man reveling in nudity.

You've seen the stars in this shape before, they always come around at the start of the great wet season, and leave with the advent of the dusty season.

You decide to dub this figure "Astu" - the Reveler

But finding patterns in the skies does not end here, in this year's dusty season, you notice another familiar set of stars in the sky. They take the shape of an outstretched hand, empty, much like the season it appears in.

You dub this one "Nikhlo" - the Beggar

When the Beggar leaves, you'd normally retreat to the innerworld for the duration of the burning season, in which all living things are fried by the sun, but this year, you spend your nights outside and notice a whole new cluster of stars.

These take the shape of a pickaxe striking into a wall, and it looms over your heard every night until the end of the burning season.

You dub it - "Yaklk" - the Miner

As the rainy season comes, so does a vague cross shape in the sky. Following along with your imaginary lines, it begins to resemble a man, throwing a boulder.
You never really thought about it, but this rock thrower in the sky brings you the joys of rain, every year, sometimes an uncomfortable amount, one dare even say too much.
Maybe it's because of that boulder he's tossing...

In any case, you dub him "Raal" - the Hurler
your brother is quite bemused by this.

As the year draws to a close and the horrendous heat begins to die down, awaiting the arrival of the Reveler, one unseemly entity in the sky is there, every year, hiding in the shadows of the bright stars around it.

You call it "Urekh" - the Snake
it's long and thin, just like a real one, hiding in plain sight. It is the epitome of calmness, a perfect match for the resting season.

Staring into the sky every night, you wonder what other pictures you might find, what other patterns you might discover.

As your people are gaining a better understanding of time, and the world around them, they become more and more like the neighboring Hamatsik, out of necessity.
We've observed them occasionally digging long, narrow ditches through their crops, which fill up with water during the wet and rainy seasons.
On our side however, our crops are occasionally flooded by the lake as it refills, sometimes getting almost close enough to flow into the innerworld.

Though many are aware of the danger such an eventually might pose, they don't quite seem to acknowledge it.
As per usual, it is up to you and your brother to do something about it, even if it's still in the middle of the burning season.

In emulating the Hamatsiks' practice, you draw their attention as well. As many of them consider you or your brother personal friends, they're willing to share their knowledge with you, although actually digging is something they abstain from.

Now armed with the knowledge of how deep to dig and where to direct the flow to, the two of you get to work more eager than before.

Motivated by your initiative, your people come to help you at last, finishing a few of these water paths before the rainy season sets in.

Though you've been spared from a flood this time, the next wet season might change that.

When the next flood came, it flowed off into the wields, helping the crops grow through the troubled heat, it was just like the fields of the Hamatsik.

After this achievement, not much else happens for years on end, there is simply nothing else to do to adapt to this life, you've got it all figured out.

Raal finds himself a sweet girl in the mean time, and makes her bear his children, turning you into an uncle.
An uncle without any children of his own.
At 32 years old, this is unheard of, both within your tribe and with your neighbors. There is simply no girl good enough for you, you are a king after all.
Raal didn't seem too concerned with that problem, arguing that the need for an heir comes before the need for a loving woman, thus he tells you to just find a pretty girl and call it a day.

There is truth in his words, after all, he is a king too, and this would certainly be the objectively better choice, besides you've got him, he has an heir, you don't have to rush it, but...

When a family of nomads came by in the burning season, you couldn't help but notice a stunningly beautiful pair of...eyes, among them.
After a brief chat and an exchange of suggestive looks, you've decided that this is the wife you want, you simply must have this girl.
However, she and her family left northward yesterday, it would be nearly impossible to find her now.

So it's either run off into the sunset and die or get a mid woman?

well, there's also getting depression and killing yourself

not like it matters, you don't play a character to the end, you only play the current ruler

Waking up in the arms of your wife, you slowly wiggle out of her loving embrace. It's still night, the cold wind blowing into the innerworld. Normally you'd wake your brother at this time, so the two of you can go stargazing together.
Yoro however, is nowhere to be found.

He's not in the night-pile, neither is he under the dripping arch, nor in the shadow of the pillar, or in front of the entrance.

You step outside, assuming he'd already awoken before you, but to your dismay he's not there either.
It's like Yoro had been swallowed by the earth, not a single trace of him.
The only person you can see out here, is a single hamatsik man, running off into the distant north.

After a good while of searching for your brother , you decide to go back to sleep and look for him properly in sunlight.
