Monday 6th November (Day 204)

You wake up on the floor in a tangle of limbs. Unfortunately, all of them are clothed, but you take what victories you can get. Despite the terms of your entry to the sleepover, Yuzu has migrated off the sofa to the floor next to you. You’re content to lay there and go back to bed, but you remember it’s Monday as you close your eyes. You crack one eye open and check your watch, and as usual, you are awake on time, meaning no more sleep.

“No rest for the weary,” you sigh as you begin to get up.

“Didn’t you just have a whole night’s sleep?” Yuzu murmurs from next to you.

“It’s the principle of the matter,” you explain, getting a roll of the eyes as she seizes your abandoned blanket. “You’re going to have to head home too.”

“Momo-chan and I have our own closets here,” she yawns. “No need to go home.”

“Of course, you three would be that prepared,” you chuckle. “Do they have wardrobes in your apartment?”

“A drawer each,” she corrects. “Shoo, I’ll see you in class.”

“See you then,” you say. An arm rises from the bedroll on the floor which you squeeze before letting go and heading back to your apartment.

You quickly head back and get ready for school – a shower, breakfast, and some food set out for Otto – and you’re ready to head in for the day.

>Talk to Miho about what she knows of the next match

As usual, you head for the warehouse. Whoever decides where Ooarai steams has chosen well, as it’s not particularly cold. You reach the warehouse, and go through the usual pleasantries, waving hello or returning waves as necessary as well as avoiding being jumped by the Rabbits.

Your first stop is Werewolf, where Ruby is already peering down the barrel, preparing to clean it.

“Morning, skipper,” she greets you, hearing your approach. “We have a lot of work ahead of us.”

“You have a lot of work ahead of you,” you reply. She pauses at that, and looks towards you, eyes narrowed. “I have to talk to Miho this morning, so it’ll just be you four.”

“About?”

“The upcoming match this week,” you explain.

“Ah damn it, I can’t even be mad since that’s a reasonable excuse,” she groans. “Fine, go. It’s not like Werewolf is going to fall apart without you helping.”

“Knew I could count on you,” you chuckle as you turn around. It takes a minute to locate Anglerfish team, and another to weave through the warehouse to them.

“Hana!” You greet as you reach the tank, spotting the girl climbing out of the turret. “Where’s Miho?”

She points down. You step around to the rear of the tank and spot a pair of legs underneath it.

“Hello down there,” you say as you nudge her boot.

CLANG

“Oww,” you hear from under the tank. Miho rolls out with a hand on her head. “You surprised me.”

“Sorry,” you shrug. You hold out a hand to help her up which she takes. “I want to know what you know about the match.

“Aside from that we’re against Jatkosota?” she asks. “Well, I have Yukari working on more information. She’s looking for any information on what specifically Jatkosota has. We’re also due a map, but you know how the Federation is.”

“Out to get us?”

“Well…yeah,” Miho agrees. “I’ve been on that field before though I think. It’s an airfield in a valley.”

“Oh yeah?” You ask. “Anything I should know about it? Or anyway to find a map?”

“You could go bother them if you want to know more,” Miho offers. “Or help Yukari on her OSINT mission.”

>You can sit on the phone as you help repair Werewolf so call the Federation about a map.

>You can sit on the phone as you help repair Werewolf so call the Federation about a map.

“I’ll talk to them about the map,” you say after a moment to consider the options. “I can help my team out with repairs while doing that.”

“Good idea,” Miho nods. “I know my team get grouchy when I abandon them to do Commander stuff.”

“A bunch of whiners and moaners,” you agree with a laugh. You copy the Federation helpline from Miho, dial it, then begin heading back to your team.

“Thank you for calling the MEXT helpline,” the automated voice drones as you head back. “If you are a Senshado practitioner, press 1…” you press them as required, eventually getting to the waiting music.

You’re thrown a spanner by Max as you arrive at Werewolf. You catch it, and get to work on helping him and Leo disassemble part of the engine. It’s slow and deliberate work – if you break anything you don’t have many spares – but the lot of you are professionals.

“Hello? Hello? Anyone there?” Your phone says.

Max chucks it to you again. It flies high and you’re forced to lean dangerously far off his back deck to catch it.

“Hi!” You say, greeting her back. “I’m calling from Ooarai academy – we need a map for our match, and we haven’t received it yet.”

“Of course, that’s definitely a problem,” the lady replies. “Let me have a look and see what’s happening for you.”

There’s some tapping away on the other side and you wait patiently as you’re handed an optic to clean by Ruby.

“Weird, records show that you’ve already been sent a copy,” the lady says. “I will send it again to the same e-mail address.”

“Oh, thank you,” you reply, slightly surprised by how easy it was.

“Ten euros says there’s another mistake,” Max says the moment the call ends.

>“It could’ve just been an actual mistake.”

“I thought you got rid of the dude that was causing all this,” Max says. “Out the window.”

“Well, if he worked there a long time, then it’s likely he still has friends that work there,” you state. “As we can see from what’s happening right now.”

“That sucks,” Max sighs. There’s a moment of silence as you continue tinkering with the engine. “You know, we have our own friends, don’t we? Instructor Nishizumi or Chono, the mayor? Why don’t we ask them?”

“Not a bad idea,” you reply. “Let’s hold out on the big guns till we see if they’re actually going to send us the map.”

“If you say so,” he grunts. “We should just blow up the headquarters and be done with it.”

“Who’s going to organise matches for us to win if we do that?” You chuckle. Max laughs with you and goes back to working on the engine.

>Talk to the history club about the gold.

You work through lessons as usual, and at lunch, the first people you seek out are the history club. They are in their usual classroom.

“Close the door behind you,” Caesar orders as you enter. You do so, then take a seat, noting the stormy faces on each member of the history club.

“Someone die while I wasn’t looking?”

“We have to decide on who we give this to,” Erwin says. “Or how to slow down the process so we have some breathing room.”

“And what are your thoughts?” You ask gesturing to the room.

“They’re both offering the same thing,” Saemonza says. “Effectively anyway, plus or minus some small things.”

“And we haven’t been able to talk to the other museum yet?” You ask. “The British Museum?”

“They said they’ll contact us when they can get a representative to us,” Oryou says.

“We should try stalling,” you say. “So, we have more time to think about it.”

“Yūshūkan has already started the process,” Oryou warns. “Depending on how hard they press we may not have a chance to stall them. It might be better to at least choose.”

“Do we even have any way to stall?” Saemonza muses aloud.

“That depends on if any of us know how to use the court,” Erwin points out. They look amongst themselves before looking to you.

“I’m not Japanese,” you remind them.

“I just figured since you know a lot…” Caesar begins.

“Not about courts or law – or the Japanese courts, sorry,” you remind them getting a round of curses.

“Don’t be sorry, be better,” Erwin states. You don’t know what to say, but then all four of them burst out laughing.

“Ha, ha,” you say. “On a more serious note, what can we do?”

“We’ll file our own application,” Caesar states. “We can purposefully make a mistake or two and blame it on being school kids – they’ll throw both applications out and make us start again.”

“They won’t just fix the mistakes and move on?” You ask.

“Japanese courts are too exacting,” Caesar says, shaking her head. “They’ll throw it out to punish us.”

“Which is exactly what we want,” you state.

“Bingo,” Erwin nods. “We’ll still need to make a decision though.”

>“Yūshūkan is the one pressing us, so as far as I’m concerned we should go with Kure.”

“Agreed,” Erwin speaks up. “It might be the less prestigious option, but I trust the maritime museum to do their best to look after it.”

“Exactly my point! Plus they’re not being difficult about it,” you add. “’Want to work with us? No? Ok, no problem, have a nice day.’ Versus being told what to do and what’s going to happen.”

“I think we’re more or less agreed,” Caesar says, looking around the room. “Let’s sleep on it, but otherwise we’ll push for Kure to take it.”

“And the British Museum?” You ask.

“They’ve either forgotten or don’t care,” Caesar shrugs. “Whatever the reason, we’re on a timer so we can’t wait.”

“And if they do contact us?”

“Then we talk to them,” Caesar replies. “But I’m not holding my breath.”

“Okay,” you nod. “Tomorrow then?”

“Tomorrow,” Caesar confirms. “I’ll have the paperwork ready.”

>Consult with Miho on the map, or what to do next if it hasn’t arrived.

That evening, you head to the warehouse as usual. Most people are working on their tanks, working hard to be ready for the upcoming match. You squeeze between them and head for the lounge at the back which again has been transformed into a briefing room.

“Did they send a map?” You ask Miho as you enter.

“They did actually,” she replies, sounding just as surprised as you do. “It was an old one, but I’ve fought on it before at Black Forest, so I just asked Erika to send us the latest one.”

“And she said yes?”

“We’re not fighting her,” Miho shrugs. “Even if we were, she would probably send it to us.”

“So, what do we have?”

“An old airbase in a valley,” Miho replies. “Lots of open ground, surrounded by mountainous terrain and forests that are hard to traverse for larger tanks.”

>“A lot of open ground – good for our big guns.”
>“It looks pretty easy to hide small tanks in those forests.”

>“A lot of open ground – good for our big guns.”

“Definitely,” Miho nods, “the forest cover is pretty light, so we’ll be able to see a long way away. Only real line of sight breaker is the airfield, but even then, some of it is unobstructed.”

“Yeah, no buildings on the southern end,” you observe. “At least according to this map.”

“It’s less than a year old,” Miho reassures you. “So, it should be identical – or at least no major changes.”

“Doesn’t excuse the Federation giving us outdated maps,” you mutter, comparing the two. “Half the buildings and forests are missing on the old one – we’d be walking into the match at a disadvantage.”

“I thought we had dealt with this,” Miho sighs.

“So did I,” you reply.

>“How do you think Jatkosota will play it?”

“Well I don’t think they’ll oblige us with a meeting engagement,” Miho remarks. “My bet is they’ll scatter what they can into the woods and hills where most of our tanks can’t follow then try to ambush us where they can.”

“Makes sense I suppose when they’re rocking things like the BT-42, right?”

“I don’t think everything they have is quite that bad,” Miho replies. “I know they operate T-34s and Panzer IVs and such as well.”

“So not quite that bad, but not great either,” you summarise. “Any heavy tanks?”

“A couple probably,” Miho replies. “Nothing I would expect to be too hard for us to deal with. Especially if they aren’t able to escape into the forest.”

“Easy pickings at that point,” you nod. “What does Yukari have on their strength?”

“They should be able to fill out to over twenty tanks,” Miho says. “Probably not thirty, so we won’t be too outnumbered.”

“And we should have the quality advantage anyway,” you finish.

“Exactly. Let’s come back to this tomorrow, but this is winnable.”

>Go back to the warehouse. If you can finish work on Werewolf early, you can help others out.

Miho takes her leave a little later after finishing up a few different bits and bobs. You don’t leave the lounge, staying a little longer to check both maps and see just how hard the league tried to screw you. Not too hard - just enough it could be played off as a mistake, but enough that any planning done based on it might’ve had to have been thrown out the window.

You consider heading back to hang out with the ex-Student Council or History club but your mine drifts back to Werewolf sitting partially damaged in the Warehouse. He’ll be done in a couple of days anyway, but the match is only a few more after that, leaving precious little time to do much else.

So you get to work on Werewolf.

Most of the grunt work is already done, mostly by your crew, but there’s still work to be done. The engine was mostly disconnected so Max could tinker with it to try stop any backfiring, without success. It’s back in now, but there are a few connections left to do which you get to work on. You do the ones on the back deck first before moving underneath to do the last of them.

You work in silence for a while before you hear someone enter the warehouse.

“Is it just us?” A voice asks. You quickly place it as Hana.

“I think so. Someone left the lights on though,” Ruby replies. They head over to Werewolf where they fail to notice you sticking out under the back of the tank. “I need your help with realigning the optic.”

“Of course!”

>Scare them

The two of them climb into Werewolf and get to work. You ignore them initially, content to tinker away and finish off your work on the engine. They’re also content work, initially, but they soon begin to distract each other, giggles interspersing hushed words.

“You thinking what I’m thinking?” You whisper. A flash of amusement from Werewolf, followed by the sound of the turret moving an inch. Both go dead silent for a moment.

“We must have hit the traverse,” Ruby declares.

You feel Werewolf’s attention on you, and you see someone tensioning his tracks with a spanner. You’re on the wrong side to do that, but you take the spanner you have and lightly clang it against the tracks. Since they’re in the tank they likely have no idea where the noise is coming from.

“Something is probably lose in the engine,” Ruby sighs. “The boys were taking it apart but didn’t finish putting it back together again.”

“Of course,” Hana replies, sounding rather nervous. Unlike Ruby she likely has no clue there’s more to Werewolf than meets the eye.

Werewolf decides to go next, and he decides to simply close the hatch they entered through.

Your hatch clangs shut and both scream. It’s one thing to be used to being in a tank in the relative darkness, but it’s another to be plunged into it without warning. You can hear the mad scrambling, and you bang about with the spanner as they do, generally adding to the confusion.

They quickly make it out of the tank. From your position underneath, you can see both sets of shoes strike the ground as they dash out of the tank.

“What on earth?” Hana begins, flustered at the tank seemingly going haywire. “Is your tank haunted?”

“It would seem that way,” Ruby huffs. That’s when you choose to roll out from under the tank, and you’re only slightly surprised to see Hana’s shirt is missing and Ruby’s skirt is rolled a little too high. It’s immediately rolled down when they spot you.

>“Sex is for on the tank, not in the tank.”

>“I bet that optic is super realigned, huh?”

“Optic…” Ruby seems to go blank for a moment, halfway between anger and embarrassment.

“Your secondary sight,” Hama reminds her.

“Oh yeah! That’s realigned,” Ruby nods. “Tank should be finished tomorrow if you were finishing the engine?”

“Mostly done,” you confirm. “I was about to finish it before I was distracted.”

“Before you distracted us!” Ruby snaps back finding her fire again. “We were almost finished inside the tank as well!”

“I’m sure you were,” you chuckle, sliding out fully from under the tank. You stand, stretch, then throw Ruby the keys which she grabs out of the air. “Don’t forget to lock the door behind you.”

You turn around and begin walking for the door – then abruptly step right. The keys sail past your head, clanking off Rabbit team’s M6.

“Rude,” you say to your gunner before turning around again and leaving.

Tuesday 7th November (Day 205)

You wake up a bit later than usual that morning. You reckon you deserve it given you basically finished today’s work yesterday, but Otto does not, the cat yowling at his food being three minutes late.

You fill his bowl, get ready and head out. You make it to the warehouse doors before you’re shooed out the way by a member of the Public Morals Committee in a high visibility jacket. Hippo team’s M6 clatters out, followed closely by Werewolf, though you’re surprised to see Azusa in your cupola.

“Taking him out for a spin?” You ask.

“Getting antsy,” Max shouts from his hatch. “He’s born to kill!”

“Don’t I know it,” you chuckle. “Look after him Azusa.”

“Sure thing!” She promises. They roll off into the training grounds, while you head in.

You head into the Warehouse where everyone else is hard at work on their tanks. You slip past them, glare at members of your crew who are not hard at work, then head through into the lounge turned war room.

“Yukari!” You greet her as you walk in. “How goes the intel gathering?”

“It goes!” She laughs back. “Come have a look!” You walk over to the board she’s staring at, and you can see dozens of pictures pinned to it, pictures of tanks Jatkotsota has used in their recent matches.

“What do you have for me?” You ask. “And where’s Miho?”

“I’ve already briefed her, and she’s doing something important. Probably,” Yukari says. “Anyway, Jatkosota isn’t too complicated. They have three or four heavy tanks, and that’s about it for dangerous firepower.”

“I see,” you nod. “What about other tanks to worry about?”

“Lots of older medium tanks,” she replies. “Short barrelled Panzer IVs and T-34s – maybe a T34/85 lurking somewhere. Otherwise, it’s very light, very fast tanks that can’t really take much damage.”

“Like Mika’s BT-42?”

“Exactly like Mika’s BT-42,” Yukari nods. “They own probably 20 tanks at most. Not much more than we do.”

“And they’re basically on par or worse?”

“I would say so,” Yukari nods. “In a straight fight we could destroy them, even though we have five less tanks.”

“But they’re not going to make it a straight fight, are they?”

“Probably not,” Yukari agrees. “You or Miho would know better though.”

“She thinks they’re going to use the terrain to deny us a decisive fight,” you say. “Try and whittle us down.”

“Not surprised,” Yukari hums. “I would look into what tanks we have that can chase them into the bad areas, and which will have to sit pretty.”

“Sure,” Yukari replies, turning back to her board. “I’ll leave that to you guys.”

“Not interested in getting involved?” You ask.

“Commander Nishizumi and you haven’t lead me wrong yet,” Yukari shrugs. “So, I’ll focus on what I’m good at, and you focus on what you’re good at.”

“Ha,” you chuckle. “I guess so. I’ll leave you to it.”

“And you leave the research to me,” Yukari replies. “I’ll get you a full list as soon as I can.”

“Thanks Yukari,” you nod as you leave.

You spend the rest of practice helping others with their tanks. Everyone is making good progress, so you might be able to squeeze in getting another tank repaired. You make a note to also consult with Miho about that, before heading off to class.

>See what Azusa thought of Werewolf while she was working with him.

At lunch, you grab your tray and head over to where Rabbit team usually sits. You begin eating as you wait, and a few moments later, you hear them.

“Hey! Commander Hermann!” Yuuki crows. “What are you doing here.”

“I’m here for you,” you reply.

“Oh my,” Yuuki goes red, “m-me? Aya, bathroom. Now.”

“He means the royal you,” Azusa sighs. Yuuki looks to you hopefully, but you just shrug your shoulders.

“Oh,” Yuuki sighs.

“Maybe next time,” you chuckle as the Rabbits take positions around you. “I wanted to talk to Azusa actually, ask her what she thought of Werewolf.”

“Here to talk tanks as always,” Yuuki sighs.

“He was very sweet to me,” Azusa replies, as she elbows Yuuki. “I don’t know if it was because Max was in the tank with me but it’s almost like he was going easy on me, as if he was encouraging me.”

>“As in you felt encouraged, or you just had no problems with him?”

“Both,” Azusa giggles. “He ran like a charm, even Max was surprised! And, I felt like I could do anything.”

“Interesting,” you hum, patting her head as you do.

>“Max gets no mercy, so it’s all you.”

“Really?” Azusa asks, doing her best to ignore your hand. “I’d have thought he would behave for his crew.”

“Nope, we work around him and what he wants,” you chuckle. “I bet Max was annoyed.”

“He just looked resigned,” Azusa states. “That plus a lot of bitching and moaning about life in general.”

“That sounds like Max,” you nod. “I’m glad you had fun.”

“Loads!” Azusa confirms.

“Speaking of fun,” Aya cuts in. “You promised to go out with us!”

“I did?” You ask.

“You did!” All of the Rabbits apart from Azusa confirm.

“Did I?” You ask Azusa.

“Uhhh,” she looks between you and the rest of her team staring at her. “I can’t remember?”

“Right,” you chuckle, patting her head again. “We’ll go out again soon, I promise.”

“He promised!” Karina declares. “It’s decided!”

“Of course,” you sigh as the Rabbits declare their victory.

>Talk to Miho about what tanks are going to be useful for what role.

That evening, you head into the warehouse as usual for evening practice. People are scurrying around tanks, aiming to get them ready to go. You move past them to Anglerfish team where Miho is standing atop her tank, surveying the team.

“Looking out upon your kingdom?” You ask as you approach.

“State of the team,” Miho laughs. “What’s up?”

“I wanted to talk to you about what tanks you want to use for what,” you ask.

“Right,” Miho nods as she hops down off the tank. “I was thinking that we have a core of our tanks that can take hits act as bait as they push up.”

“Those tanks that can go off road can try hunt for their tanks in the forests – or try to cut them off when they come out to hit us.”

>Sounds good to me, I’ll take the off-road hunters.
>I don’t think my gun is that good in the forests, so I’ll roll with the bait I guess.

Hmm. If this is a flag tank battle, and we have them outgunned, we'd really need to make it worth it for them to engage tanks that are armored enough to survive being placed as bait, otherwise they just won't take it. That makes me think that we'd be putting the flag tank in the "bait", but that's dangerous if we're not Guard Dog wolfpacking it. On the other hand, I don't think we have a ton of tanks that off road super well? Which would make our addition to the off roaders very important.

Of course, we don't have to have the flag tank in the bait group, but I do wonder what would make them take the bait. Maybe our intel on them reveals that their commanders are bloodthirsty? If that's the case, then I guess it works out.

Regardless, with this firepower advantage, I'm more worried about an assassin going for our flag tank like what we pulled against Pravda. It would be real nice to teach some of our teammates to do Wolfpacks with each other, but for now:

>Join the group where the flag tank is going

“I think it’s a good idea if I stick with the flag tank,” you say. “Best that someone who can protect it stays with it.”

“Whatever tank we pick, it’ll likely have to stay with the exposed, main group,” Miho explains, accepting your choice. “Both because I’d prefer our more heavily armoured tanks act as the flag tank for this one, and I want them to come to us.”

“I mean, a dozen tanks sitting in the open is a decent target,” you say. “No reason not to hit us.”

“Also a very hard target,” Miho replies. “According to the information we have they might struggle to even penetrate our side armour for many of our tanks. They might not come in on the bulk of our firepower at all unless we force them to, at which point we fight them off and whoever’s hunting in the woods knows where they are to ambush them.”

“And who will be hunting in the woods?”

“The Ducks, myself maybe, any other tanks that can off-road decently,” she replies. “I’d want to keep them all together. They can probably dance around us, so we’d get picked off alone in the forest.”

“How do we win then?”

“Well, we start by getting our flag tank to the relative safety of the airfield,” Miho says. “Once there, we should be in a better position to pull tanks into search parties and roam the fields.”

“I thought most of our tanks couldn’t go off-road?” You ask.

“Well, they can,” Miho replies. “That’s what tanks were designed for after all, but it’ll be slow going.”

I don't like the idea too much of sending out search parties, feels like splitting the group during a horror movie and they'll just get picked off. Splitting up seems like one of the only ways we could lose. I'd rather stay in as large of groups as possible, but I don't know if that would be able to properly engage them and we'd just be in a stalemate. I really don't like it, but I guess..

“Ok, sure,” you say. “Let’s see what we think as Yukari learns more and as we get closer to the day.”

“Of course,” Miho smiles. “I wonder what will happen if we end up in a stalemate.”

“Oh yeah?”

“I’ve never seen it happen before,” Miho admits, “but it might just happen here given we don’t really want to go chasing them, and they might not want to engage us head on, meaning it might get to a point where we can’t go attack them because otherwise, they might ambush us, but our position is so good they can’t risk coming out.”

“What do you think would happen if it came to that?” You ask.

“Hmm, well, it’s bad for tv to have two teams doing nothing, so the federation will probably force us somehow,” Miho muses. “Maybe they’ll begin decreasing the field area to force us to collide. Depending on how they do it, it could be great for us or a bad thing.”

“That sounds fun,” you sigh.

“Let’s focus on winning before that,” Miho replies. “I’m feeling confident about this match.”

“Aye, aye, skipper.”

>Find the History Club, see how the paperwork is going.

You catch the History Club on the way out of the warehouse, and the five of you head back to their house to discuss the paperwork.

When you arrive, you see their lounge has also been subjected to the time-honoured tradition of being turned into a workspace. Their table and most of the floor is covered in different papers and books.

“Since we decided we wanted to work with Kure, we have to make sure we actually get the paperwork right on our end,” Caesar explains. “Which means a lot of checking for proper procedure.”

“Which explains the books,” you state.

“Which explains the books,” Caesar nods. “We should be done before the match.”

>“Have we told Kure so we can get their help on this?”

No one says anything for a minute, everyone looking around at each other.

“Have we?” You ask again.

“I haven’t talked to them,” Caesar says.

“Me neither,” Erwin adds.

“Not me,” Saemonza says.

Oryou just shakes her head.

“Well, I guess that’s why I’m here,” you sigh, checking the time. “Do you think it’s too late to call them?”

“Probably,” Caesar says.

“I would do it anyway,” Oryou counters. You weigh the options for all of twenty seconds before deciding just to call. It takes two rings before the automated response begins.

“Kure Maritime Museum, we’re closed now, but if you call back tomorrow, we can-,”

“Try Mr Todaka’s cell,” Caesar suggests. You end the call, and dial his number.

“It’s the Ooarai History Club,” you say the moment the phone is answered. “We want to send everything to Kure.”

“That’s great,” you hear rustling and thumps, probably as he throws books and papers off his desk. “I can start the paperwork immediately.”

“We’ve already started on our end,” you reply. “But we realised that no one told you, so we thought it was prudent to tell you. Especially since Yūshūkan has already started their own proceedings.”

“Unsurprising,” he grunts. “They take what they want or try to anyway. With you guys on our side we will be able to snag it from them.”

“We thought about submitting the paperwork wrong to slow them down,” you reply.

“Ha,” he chuckles at that. “Smart kids, but there’s no need now. We have a legal department on this, so we can handle both ends. Just sit tight and we’ll handle it from here.”

“Can do,” you reply.

“Good stuff, you lot have a bright future ahead of you, so I’m glad you’ve chosen to work with us,” he says. “I’ll call you guys later.”

“Of course,” you reply. He hangs up, and you put the phone down, looking to the history club around you.

“Guess we have the evening free,” Caesar says.

>“Movie night?”

“Well, we’re suddenly out of things to do today,” Erwin says.

“It’s a school day tomorrow,” Caesar replies.

“We planned to stay up late anyway,” Oryou points out.

The four of them are silent for a moment before nodding in unison. “Movie night.”

“Hell yeah,” you grin as they begin shovelling paperwork off the sofas so you have somewhere to sit.

Caesar takes control of the remote and immediately arguments about what to watch erupt. Erwin wants to watch Fury, Caesar 300, and Saemonza and Oryou asking for The Last Samurai. You sit and listen as what must be a very familiar argument erupts, each of them extoling the virtues of their chosen time period, explaining why a different period is bad or complaining about Saemonza and Oryou ganging up all the time – or Saemonza and Oryou ganging up on the other two.

You see the remote slip out of Caesar’s hand and snatch it up when no one’s looking. You browse through the movies for a suitably neutral one, settling on Master and Commander.

“We never agreed on a movie!” Caesar complains.

“You guys were deadlocked,” you explain. “So I broke the tie.”

“That’s not how a tiebreak works,” Erwin muses.

“Shhh!” You complain. “Movie’s starting!”

With something playing, the arguments die down, and the five of you settle down to watch.

Wednesday 8th November (Day 206)

>See how it’s going with the tanks being brought out of storage

You sleep over in one of the History Club’s spare rooms that evening. You leave while they’re still asleep, head home, and change before heading back to the warehouse. There aren’t many people, but one of the few is Hoshino, who’s standing with the tanks being restored.

“Commander,” she grunts as she notices your approach, promptly turning back to her clipboard.

>“Do need me to chase anything down or shout at anyone?”

“Hmm,” Hoshino hums as she considers it, flipping through the pages on her clipboard. “Well, we have all of the tanks and they should all be in working order soon.”

You hear a clang as a roadwheel falls off the Crusader nearby.

“Soon-ish” Hoshino corrects. “But we’re missing a lot of equipment.”

“Missing how?”

“Well, we took the good equipment was taken out to equip other tanks,” Hoshino explains. “And there’s no point of ripping it out of tanks that we’ll be using again later for a single match. What we need are the spares to fit, but I have no idea where they are.”

“They aren’t in the warehouse anywhere?”

“Nope,” Hoshino replies, shaking her head. “I’ve not seen them around here.”

“Do you have any idea where they could be?”

“Absolutely none,” she replies. “Thanks for volunteering to find everything.”

“No worries,” you sigh as she stalks off towards one of the tanks being refurbished.

After initially having no idea what to do, you decide to head for the best source of administrative help you can.

Turtle team are where there tank is usually parked - right in the corner. They’ve created their own small area with a spare sofa, table and some chairs. As usual, Anzu is doing absolutely nothing, Momo is planning – though what she is planning you have no idea, and Yuzu is staring at her tank’s engine, looking very confused.

“Are you stuck?” You ask as you reach her.

“I can do it myself!” She complains. “I just need to figure out what goes where.”

“Is that why you’re holding a hammer?”

“Absolutely not,” she replies, throwing said hammer to the side. “It was just the first tool I picked up.”

>“Why not help me track down some missing equipment, then I’ll help you with this engine.”

>“Why not help me track down some missing equipment, then I’ll help you with this engine.”

“I don’t need help,” she replies pouting. You hold her gaze for a moment before she blushes and looks away. “Maybe a little bit of help.”

“And I’m not a very good mechanic, so all I can offer is a little bit of help,” you reply holding out your hand. “Deal?”

“Deal,” she replies taking the hand and shaking it. “Let’s head for the Student Council office. Most of these tanks were stripped in my tenure, so what happened to the equipment should be recorded somewhere.”

“After you,” you reply, gesturing to the door, getting an eyeroll and a smile from her.

“Hana! We’re breaking into your office!” Yuzu calls.

“Have fun!” Hana calls back from somewhere in Anglerfish team's general direction. “But not too much fun!”

“Guess Anzu told her,” you mutter, causing Yuzu to go bright red. The two of you make your way to the Student Council office and make your way in. Yuzu heads straight for the filing cabinet behind her old desk and begins digging through it. She pulls out a wad of papers and hands half to you.

“Start looking,” she orders. You take your half and do so, rapidly sorting the papers into those you know are irrelevant and those your Japanese isn’t good enough to understand.

It’s less than 10 minutes later that Yuzu triumphantly pulls a sheet of paper out of her pile.

“Bingo!” She exclaims. “We’ve found the storage space!”

“Great, are we going to pick everything up?” You ask.

“Lets take a couple of CVs and Anteater team,” Yuzu nods. The two of you head back to the warehouse, acquire the tankettes, some trailers, and the gamer club, then head to the noted location. Thankfully everything is there.

>Hang out with Rabbit team, you said you would eventually

At lunch, you text Azusa, asking where her and the rest of Rabbit team are.

>They’re deep in the ship. Absolutely nothing good can come of that.

The moment Azusa texts you back telling she’s in the bowels of your ship, many thoughts flash through your mind, none of them good. You put them to the side however, and instead ask for their location.

B23-A. That means nothing to you, but you know how to use the deck numbering system to get there, so you tell them to stay put then rush to the nearest entrance to the inside of the ship. One thing you make sure to do is record the directions you take, so you can work your way back up if necessary.

For how little time they’ve had, the Rabbits are ridiculously deep in the ship. You catch up with them about ten minutes later once you’ve descended almost to the bottom of the ship.

“Commander Hermann! What are you doing here!” Yuuki gushes. “I didn’t expect to see you.”

“I came to find you when I found out you came all the way down here,” you frown, though they probably can’t see it in the light. “What are you six doing down here?”

“Well, we read your article!” Karina chirps.

“About the gold!” Aya adds.

“So, we wanted to go treasure hunting!” Yuuki finishes.

“And you thought this was a good idea?” You ask turning to Azusa who at least has the decency to look embarassed.

“Well…you did it, and we prepared,” she mumbles. “Plus Ogin laughed when she overheard us.”

“She said she’s better than us at navigating the ship!” Yuuki growls.

“You realise she lives down here right?” You ask rhetorically. “She would be better than you at navigating the ship. I bet you guys are lost.”

“We are not!” Karina gasps. “We even brought a compass and recorded which direction we went in and for how long!”

>“You do realise that compasses aren’t very useful for navigating a moving ship right?”

“Eh?” Karina looks thoroughly confused. “What do you mean? It means we know which way we went!” You see Azusa sigh and mutter to herself as Karina says that.

“It’s alright, Commander, I was tracking our position,” Azusa says, passing her phone over. “Even if it probably wasn’t the best idea to be down here in the first place.”

“You can say that again,” you grumble as you check the directions which seem alright to you.

“Ogin…” Saki mutters. It’s so quiet you almost miss it, but Yuuki catches it.

“Ogin? What about her?” Yuuki asks.

“Ah snap, guess I’m rumbled,” the shadows grumble. You turn your phone in that direction and it illuminates the girl herself.

“Keeping an eye on them?”

“So, they don’t get properly lost,” she grunts. “When I overheard their planning, I decided to stake out the closest entry to the warehouse and followed them down.”

“Wouldn’t you have had to skip classes to do that?” Aya asks.

“Yeah, and?” Ogin asks. “Delinquent, remember?”

“With a heart of gold apparently,” you observe, getting a stuck out tongue from her. “The bar is nearby, should we head there?”

“Lead the way,” you reply. Ogin does so, and the seven of you follow her back to the bar which is currently empty apart from Cutlass at the bar.

>“I can’t fault you for wanting to copy me. I would also want be me if I were in your shoes.”

You say as the Rabbits take a table.

“What! Really?” Yuuki gasps.

“Really,” you nod. “I helped with the search and everything that came afterwards, but the initial idea to search the bowels of the ship was the history club’s idea.”

“Rats, I guess that means no more treasure hunts,” Aya sighs. “That’s a shame.”

“You’re sure the history club won’t let you?” You ask. “Well, if they even have any more planned.”

“Very,” Yuuki frowns. Cutlass appears with food which seems to be exactly what you would get from the cafeteria.

“We have a small food lift that goes directly to the cafeteria, we’re right under the main school building,” she explains.

“Interesting,” you hum as you take one of the served plates. The lot of you eat and stay a little longer at the bar before it’s time for afternoon lessons. It’s a tight squeeze, but you and all six rabbits fit in the elevator just outside the bar and head in for afternoon lessons.

At evening practice you head over to Turtle team with a spare toolbox.

“I hear someone is having engine troubles?” You ask as you approach.

“Yeah, she’s elbow deep in it already,” Anzu drawls from the sofa. She’s at least pretending to be busy this time, with what looks like a list of Jatkosota’s tanks in hand.

“I am,” Yuzu crows, waving from the back of her tank. You head over to her and immediately get to work with her.

It soon becomes apparent that Yuzu has more or less no idea what she’s doing.

“So, what’s the problem?” You ask.

“The tank won’t start properly,” she moans. “It’s not the battery, but for some other reason it complains when I try to start it.”

“And you didn’t think to ask anyone for help?” You ask.

“The automotive club has a massive workload, as does everyone else,” she replies, shaking her head. “I didn’t want to bother them unless necessary.”

>Try to teach her how to fix the problem. It won’t make her a mechanic, but it’s a starting point.

“Well, it’s a good thing I know how to fix an engine. Mostly,” you reply. “At least it’s German so it’ll be somewhat familiar.”

“How did you learn how to fix one?” Yuzu asks. “I usually see Max doing the mechanical stuff for Werewolf.”

“I didn’t always have an automotive club to pick up my slack,” you reply. “Right, I think I can see the problem, now you just have to fix it.” You hand her a spanner and point to a sparkplug. “You see that plug? Compare it to the one next to it.”

Yuzu stares at the one you pointed out, then to the one next to it. She goes back and forth between them for a good minute before something clicks.

“This one is cracked!” She exclaims. “Is that why we had the problem starting?”

“Exactly. The spark plugs are where the fuel is turned into kinetic energy to move the tank, so if it’s cracked, then it might struggle to do that,” you explain. “Meaning problems starting and moving the tanks.”

“So how do we fix it?” She asks.

“Simple. Take this spanner and unscrew it,” you say. She takes the spanner from you and stares at it for a moment before turning her attention back to the spark plug. It hovers in front of the plug as she tries to figure out what to do. You gently guide her hand till the spanner is just above the right nut. “Turn it clockwise,” you say.

She does so, and after a couple of tugs the nut comes loose and the spark plug tumbles out. With that done, she’s able to replace it with a new one and screw it in.

“There you go,” you congratulate her as she finishes putting it in. “We’ll make a mechanic out of you yet.”

“It’s dirty work,” she complains. “I cracked a nail.”

“Let’s fix the tank first,” she says, looking around to make sure no one heard you. The closest person is Anzu who’s on the sofa, distant enough not to hear anything.

“Good thing we’re almost done then,” you reply. “We only have a few more plugs to do.”

The two of you continue to work on swapping out damaged plugs, as well as noting other minor things that might need attention. Given how hectic things are repairing tanks and generally preparing for the next match they won’t be dealt with now, but eventually they’ll have to.

You finish work on the engine as practice ends. Your other teammates are packing up, and you two do the same, finishing with the engine then heading back to your apartment.

There is no waiting. Both of you are dirty and sweaty from digging through the engine, and neither of you wish to stay that way for any longer than you must. A long shower later, both of you are much cleaner than you were before.

“How’s it going with the gold,” she asks as the two of you sit together on the sofa.

“It’s going,” you reply. “Kure is happy to take it off us, so their legal department is handling most of the paperwork.”

“My dad is a lawyer,” Yuzu says. “I can get him to have a look at it for you.”

“What’ll it cost us?”

“It’ll cost me a hug and asking nicely,” Yuzu snickers. “Maybe a stiff handshake next time you see him.”

“I think I can live with that,” you reply. “Might have to tighten my belt a little though.”

“Do you think it’s going to go anywhere?”

>“Who knows what historians care about. It could be the next big thing, or a footnote.”

“Really?” Yuzu replies frowning. “After all the effort you went through to find out all that you did, it could end up meaning nothing?”

“Well not nothing,” you reply. “We’ll still get paid for it.”

“But still! The recognition!” Yuzu complains. “It’s not fair!”

“You’re preaching to the choir,” you sigh, hugging her tighter. “I hope something will come of it, as do the history club, but I’m not holding my breath.”

“Well, you saw how many museums were vying for it,” Yuzu huffs. She drops the subject though, and the two of you settle in on the couch.

Thursday 9th November (Day 207)

That morning, the two of you stroll into practice together, and you’re surprised to seeboth the CVs have been dragged out, as well as the Type-89.

“What are we doing with these tanks?” You ask aloud as you spot them all rolling out of the warehouse.

“Dissimilar training,” Miho answers stepping out. “We’re ahead of schedule on repairs, so we can use this morning to prepare for facing an enemy that won’t fight us head on like usual. Some of us are going to be Jatkosota using the Type-89 and the CVs while the others try to fight them.”

“I see,” you say observing the tanks being brought out. Duck team are already crowding their Type-89, likely about to play one of the Jatkosota tanks, if only to use their old tank again.

“What about you, Fritz?” Miho asks. “Would you like to play the enemy or help guide the others through fighting irregulars? I’ll take the other role.”

> Join the Ducks as the irregulars.

“I’ll join the ducks as irregulars,” you reply. “My crew has enough people in it to crew both tanks.”

“Sure,” Miho nods, scribbling on her notepad. “The CVs and the Type-89 are both loaded with paint already, so feel free to head out, we’ll follow you out onto the field when we’re ready.”

“Sure thing,” you nod. You round up your crew as they arrive and distribute them amongst the tanks. You take one CV with Ruby while Max and Axel take another.

“That’s just grand,” Leo mutters as he realises, he won’t be able to sit in any of the tanks. “I guess I get to sit this one out?”

“Absolutely not,” you reply. “Ride shotgun and we’ll find something for you to do.”

He grumbles but complies, climbing onto the back of your CV as you trundle out into the practice area.

You reach the area in good time given it’s right next to the warehouse, giving you plenty of time to plan what you’re going to do when you arrive.

“I don’t know what I’m even here for,” Leo complains. “Especially since I’m not in a tank!”

“Sit in a tree,” Ruby suggests. “Tell us what you see.”

Leo laughs but stops abruptly when he sees the thoughtful expression on your face.

“We do have to fight like irregulars,” you muse. He looks around the rest of the team for support, but they either think it’s a good idea – Axel, like seeing Leo suffering – Max, or don’t care – the Volleyball club. He trudges off to find a tree, Max laughing all the way.

“We need to decide how we’re going to fight,” you say. “We could stick to what they expect us to do – small hit and runs, never leaving the trees, forcing them to hunt us down.”

“Or,” Noriko pipes up. “We smash them decisively. We use our spotter in the trees to find weak spots then swarm them. Destroy their plan and shatter their morale!”

>This is a training exercise. Play the part so your team can learn whatever Miho’s trying to teach them.

>They must learn to adapt. Jatkosota can’t afford to show mercy so you shouldn’t now.

“Good idea,” you nod. “If we smash them up now it’ll get them ready for Jatkosota attempting it then.”

“You saw how aggressive Mika was against the all-stars,” Shinobu adds. “Ducking and weaving, between the Pattons like nobody’s business.”

“I don’t know if the entire team will be capable of that, but I take your point,” you say. “Prepare for the worst and hope for the best, right?”

“Exactly!” Akebi cheers.

“Let’s get moving then,” you state. The eight of you mount up your tanks, and rumble into the forests and wait. You don’t have to wait long. It takes another five minutes before Leo crackles over the radio.

“I see them all, heading our way,” he says. “Heavier tanks are splitting into groups and going on the prowl. Lighter tanks are grouped together and hanging back.”

“A kind of quick reaction force,” Ruby summarises from the driver’s set next to you. She wasn’t particularly happy to be saddled with chauffeur duties, but most of the time she gets to fire the gun, so you think it’s fair.

“First group is passing you now, three tanks,” Leo warns. You put the radio away, and pull out a pair of binoculars. Rabbit team’s M6 is rumbling through, supported by Anteater in their Chi-nu, but you can’t see the third.

“Should we rush em?” Ruby asks. “We could be in and out before they are able to respond.”

>Try and work your way around to the fast tanks being held in reserve – it might help your other tanks out.

>Find and attack whatever the third tank is.

“We’ll find and destroy the third tank, notionally destroy, anyway,” you state. “It must be a short way behind the other tanks if Leo hasn’t been able to identify it yet.”

“We’ll follow your lead,” Max grunts from the other CV. You give the M6 and Chi-Nu a chance to move off before signalling Ruby to move off. The CV hums to life, and you move off, followed closely by the other one.

“There!” You shout to Ruby over the engine noise as you spot the third tank. “It’s the JagdPanzer!”

“I see it!” Ruby shouts back, swinging the tank towards it. Max and Axel turn to follow behind you and you pick up speed as you rush towards the edge of the forest.

“Go!” You shout as you rack the anti-tank gun and start firing. In an actual fight you’re not sure if you’d do any actual damage to the tank but you do enough for the purpose of the exercise, and zip past them into the woods on the other side. Max and Axel do the same, putting a few shots into the side, before following you. They however, experience a near miss, as a paint shell explodes close to them.

“Leo! There was a fourth tank!” Max complains into the radio.

“A shame,” he replies. “Given I’m tracking a dozen of them.”

“It’s fine, things slip through,” you say. “Just keep us as updated as you can.”

>Keep going fast and hitting Ooarai. Don’t give them a chance to reorganise.

“Keep it up?” Ruby asks,

“Keep it up,” you confirm before turning back to the radio. “Leo is there anyone else nearby?”

“There’s another column that Duck team just hit further east,” he replies. “Why don’t you give that a whirl?”

“Just after they got hit?” Ruby asks.

“It means they’re not expecting another one!” Max whoops. “Drive Axel!” The other CV guns the engine, and after a moment to fiddle with the gears, Ruby follows after them. You’re not moving long before you come across them. Like last time, you burst out of the woods, and start blasting.

“Aim for the Commander!” Ruby crows as you head straight in towards the column. Anglerfish is at the head of it, so you do your best to put as many shots as possible into them before zipping out into the forest opposite. This time however, the return fire is more accurate, with several paint shells bracketing both you and the other CV. You make it out unscathed though and disappear into the forest before anyone can arrive to chase you down.

You repeat the process several times, on the other columns scattered throughout the AO, each time however it gets dicier, and the shots land closer. Eventually you hear on the radio that Duck team hit a tree, and the other CV got caught in a crossfire and forced to stop. With the entirety of Ooarai’s tanks directed against you, they’re able to sweep the entire training area and eventually squeeze you out. You decide on one final charge, but get brutally cut down by the waiting tanks.

>Hang out with the ex-student council

At lunch, you head out to find the ex-student council. It’s been a while since you’ve hung out with the three of them at lunch despite it usually being your go to thing to do.

“Long time no see,” Anzu drawls when you walk into the lounge area. It’s still mostly a command centre, but part of it has been cleared a way to let people sit.

“I’ve got a lot of work to do,” you reply as you take a seat on the sofa next to her. “I hope it wasn’t my girlfriend that had to do it all.”

“She belonged to me before she belong to you, buddy,” Anzu retorts with a grin.

“Who belongs to who?” Yuzu asks as she enters the room, eyebrow raised. “We’re past women as property nowadays.”

She walks over and then promptly sits on your lap. “You however belong to me.”

“Oh gee, what a shame,” you say, making it abundantly clear that you don’t mind at all. “That really sucks,”

“Good,” she says, making herself comfortable.

“That was some interesting driving,” Yuzu hums. “Do you really think Jatkosota will be like that?”

“Without a shadow of a doubt,” Anzu replies. “You saw Jatkosota’s driving during the University match, they’re probably far better than Fritz was then.”

“Hence why I went as wild on you as I did,” you nod.

“How will we ever manage to hit them?” Momo asks, walking in. “If our guns aren’t pointed in the right direction, it’s game over.”

>“Then ram them.”

>“Then keep your guns on a swivel towards the forests.”

“Oh, right, that seems reasonable,” Momo nods, calming down slightly and taking a seat opposite you. A minute later as she processes the information, she very quickly un-calms down.

“Our tank can’t swivel it’s gun! Fritz!” Momo cries as she stands up. “What are we going to do!?”

“You could ram them?” You offer, getting a chuckle from Anzu. “Otherwise just hang back and offer fire support like you did.”

“That didn’t stop you from peppering Hippo team,” Momo points out.

“Well, uh, someone has to be the bait?” You offer to her. Momo doesn’t seem to like that answer, huffing and returning to her seat. “You could always ram them.”

“Don’t worry Momo-chan, you might not be able to do anything about them, but I can!” Yuzu giggles.

“That makes me feel so much better,” Momo sighs. “We will win right?”

“I think so,” you reply. “But at least this time there’s no threat of Ooarai being scrapped right?”

“Thankfully,” Momo groans. “It was like a Sword of Damocles hanging over us right till we dealt with it.”

You stay with them in the warehouse for the rest of lunch before heading off for lessons. You’re back in the warehouse in the evening.

All of the repairs that were scheduled to be done are done, giving you Friday to rest and do whatever last minute maintenance needs to be done. You’re still not back to 100% strength however, with some tanks still being struck off for the moment due to limited manpower on the repairs.

>Go over tactics with Miho and the rest of the club.

You decide it’s not worth pushing to get another tank into service before the match on Saturday. The automotive club might hate you for it and given the kind of tanks Jatkosota is bringing you’re not risking too much, making it unnecessary. Instead, you find Miho.

“Hey Fritz,” she greets you as you walk into the theatre. She’s at the back of the room, manning a projector with a map of the field you’re fighting on.

“Miho, what do you think of bringing the rest of the team in to have a chat about how we’re going to fight this?” You ask. “We’ve gone through some of the basics today, but it can’t hurt to have everyone on the same page?”

“Yeah! Good idea,” she nods after taking a second to think it over. “Call them in.”

“Sure,” you say, turning around and heading out. “Tactics meeting! Get in here!” You shout. It takes a couple goes, then a little longer for the club to play telephone, but eventually people trickle into the room.

“Thanks for coming guys,” Miho starts. “I’ll keep this short since I know you’re all busy. The plan is to proceed to the airbase in two to three groups. The first group will be the flag group. Our most heavily armoured tanks will escort the flag tank to the airbase where we’ll have the cover to hide the flag tank from any marauders. The other groups will stay slightly behind in the woods so once we repel an attack, they can bounce the Jatkosota tanks returning to the forests.”

She pauses for a moment to let it sink in. Yukari helpfully draws Miho’s plan using the projector.

“I am open to suggestions, however. I think the flag tank should be a lighter one to entice Jatkosota in, and we should have teams in both of the forests so we can respond regardless of where they come from.”

The room immediately bursts into suggestions with people giving their two cents. Azusa just looks to you to see what you have to say, along with a couple others.

>Force Azusa to say what she’s thinking.
>Say nothing, do nothing, see what comes of it.
>Speak up

Your opinion
>A heavily armoured tank should be the flag tank. No point taking chances.
>One of the mediums would make a decent compromise.
>A light tank would make the best bait.

>Everyone should stick in one massive blob so Jatkosota are powerless to attack you.
>There should only be one group hiding in the woods so you can mass your tanks.

As long as it's not light, I could see them sneaking a win off snagging one of our lights
>Having two groups should be fine, you just have to be sneaky about it.
If they're in range of each other, it should be all good. If they do a charge at the main group and run away, even if it's from a weird angle, at least one support group should be able to get good shots on them. Though we do have to worry a bit about being defeated in detail, if we are getting picked apart, it would be better to group up.

>Force Azusa to say what she’s thinking.

“I think,” you begin loudly, cutting through everyone else, “that Azusa has something to say.”

The room goes quiet as everyone now focuses on Azusa who’s burning bright red at the unexpected attention. You’d think she’d be used to it by now given her relatively senior rank in the club but apparently not if her face is anything to go by. It takes her almost a minute to snap out of it and get to explaining what she thinks.

“I think it’s a good idea to use a heavy or medium tank,” she begins. “A light tank is too susceptible to an errant flanking shot, and the back of a medium or heavy tank is just as good for a target to lure them in.”

“And on the force composition?” You ask.

“Well, I like the idea of one massive blob,” Azusa says. “They know how may tanks we have and if they notice ten missing, they might go searching for those first.”

“That’s true,” you nod. “But just the same they might see an “easy target” and go for it anyway. Even if it is a trap.”

“What do you think!?” She asks, putting you on the spot.

>One of the mediums would make a decent compromise.
>Having two groups should be fine, you just have to be sneaky about it.

“I think we should use a medium tank,” you say. “Enough of a bait, but not going to be plinked by any hidden tank destroyers. I think two groups would be fine too, as long as we’re sneaky about it obviously.”

You look back at Azusa eyebrow raised, silently asking what she thought she would achieve. She looks embarassed as if realising that you’re used to speaking to in public especially to the teams assembled in the theatre.

“We’ll go with two other groups and a heavy tank as the flag tank,” Miho decides. “Rabbit team will hold the flag for us.”

>Stay in the warehouse with Miho.

Practice ends shortly after the tactics briefing does. People very quickly begin to filter out to enjoy their limited free time. Tankery unfortunately is a time-intensive extra-curricular, not leaving much time for anything else.

One notable exception is Miho. You find her as you’re shutting off the lights one by one. When you reach the lounge, you spot her just as you’re about to turn the lights off.

“Burning the midnight oil?” You ask, causing her to jump slightly.

“Oh Fritz,” she sighs as she realises it’s you. “You scared me for a second there. I wasn’t expecting anyone else to stay this late.”

“Neither did I,” you chuckle. “Though I suppose someone has to close the warehouse on the days I don’t.”

“It’s me most days,” Miho chuckles. “It might be hard to move but it is a lot of expensive equipment.”

“Definitely,” you sigh. “After we recovered Werewolf there was a break in attempt at the museum. No luck getting him started, but it happened.”

“I wonder if there are fences for tanks,” Miho muses, “pretty hard to move several tons of steel.”

“It’s possible,” you muse as you slump in a beanbag. You gesture to the one opposite you and after a moment, Miho collapses into it.

“Yeah, long day, right?” You say.

“You don’t know the half of it,” Miho groans. “Well, you do know half of it since you do it for me, but there’s so much more – I don’t know what I’d do without your help.”

“I’m sure you’d figure it out,” you reply.

“Maybe,” Miho doesn’t look convinced, but has decided not to argue. “It’s crazy to think just three or so more tournament matches, and we’re done for the year.”

>“Anything else I can do to help?”

“Mmm, anything?” Miho repeats, a hint of amusement in her voice. You get the feeling you’ve made a mistake for a minute as Miho smiles at you, but then she drops it and collapses back into the beanbag.

“You’re already doing so much,” she says. “I don’t want to ask anymore of you.”

“That’s what I’m here for,” you shrug. “Whether you want to take advantage of that or not is up to you.”

“You can take everyone out for gunnery tomorrow,” Miho says after a moment to think about it. “I’ll deal with the rest.”

“Of course,” you reply. “Anything else?”

“Stay here a little longer?” She asks.

“I have no where else to be,” you reply.

“Good,” she sighs, making herself more comfortable on the chair. “The others understand a little bit since they’re on the Student Council now, but not really. Running a Sensha-Do club is a bit different.”

“And you’re complaining to me because I’m Vice-Commander?” You ask.

“Exactly,” she nods.

“Then vent away,” you reply. Miho does so. The two of you sit there talking for late into the night. Eventually, the two of you realise you should probably get some sleep, so you take her back to her apartment before going back to your own.

Friday 10th November (Day 208)

You get up and head for the warehouse as usual that morning. Your conversation with Miho the night before is fresh on your mind, so as soon as you enter, you’re rounding up everyone else to head to the range for practice.

>Get everyone firing as much as possible. Off the side of the boat or at trees if there aren’t enough targets, but get them firing.

>There’s no point firing without purpose. Split what targets you have up amongst them and let them practice.

You decide against wasting shells or barrel life. The work the art club has been doing for you has been a constant, if minor, expense, and when better to make use of their hard work than while preparing for a match.

There’s a few dozen of them, so as the tanks file out of the warehouse, you and Axel strap them onto the back letting them head out to the range. All the targets are soon strapped and on the move, so the two of you climb up onto Werewolf and follow the column out.

You reach the shooting range as the first of the tanks are setting up. Anglerfish team minus Miho appear to be first with another four tanks setting up alongside them. As you watch them you realise the firing range might be worth expanding but then you doubly realise that it’s rare enough tanks are out practicing gunnery to spend anything on it.

“Use regular bullseyes first to warm up,” you order as you approach. “Save the targets for your final shots.”

Your tankers dutifully do so and you watch for the entirety of practice as they carefully take aim then blow pieces of cardboard to smithereens. Unsurprisingly, Hana and Ruby top the scores, but the rest of the team are far closer in terms of good hits than you ever remember them getting. A sign that your constant training is having some effect which is reassuring.

You arrive back at the warehouse in good spirits. Everyone is shooting better than the last time you used the targets which hopefully should translate to a better chance against small, fast moving targets.

Same, Miho has been very nice, and our moments have been wholesome, but Yuzu has been better than I expected. We've technically been doing lewds with Yuzu for a while now, but as for artistic renditions of it, not sure the demand would be there for a commission to be made.

>See how it’s going with Kure and the History Club

At lunch you make your way into the canteen and wait. Most students on the ship pass through it during lunch, meaning the history club are also likely to pass through it. It belatedly occurs to you that you could just call them, but by then you’ve spotted the four of them, and are on your way.

“Mackensen,” Oryou greets you as she notices you, drawing the rest of the History Club’s attention. “Come to sit with us?”

“If I’m allowed to,” you joke.

“Of course, you’re one of us,” Oryou replies, missing the joke, That earns a laugh from the other members of the club as you take a seat with them.

“Kure,” you begin. “How’s it going and what can I do?”

“Well and watch,” Caesar replies. “Kure has begun the process on their end, so now we just need to be ready to intervene if any other museums start getting to far in the process.”

“I thought Kure was handling everything?” You ask.

“They’re trying,” Caesar replies. “But they don’t have the heft that other museums do, we might be needed to help.”

“Okay,” you nod, mulling over the explaination in your head. “What should I do?”

“Keep reading papers, scan the Tokyo courts webpages every few days,” Caesar suggests. “Whatever you can do to find out how the other museums are doing.”

“Then what?” You ask.

“We stop it,” Caesar says. “Either we get Kure to do it, or we file the paperwork ourselves.”

“Will we be able to?”

“We’ll have to,” Caesar sighs. “Besides you’re an expert at paperwork, right?”

“Ish,” you reply. “I get by.”

“Well hopefully that’s good enough,” Caesar says. “They probably can’t stop us, but it’s not impossible.”

Evening Practice
>Final maintenance, you can never check for flaws too many times.
>Early night. Everything is done by this point, let your team have a stress-free night.
>Teambuilding! The team is already built, but it should be fun for everyone (hopefully).
>Write-in

Sorry about the delayed updates gents. Things have been rather hectic but I figured you guys would prefer one a day than none.

RE Yuzu and waifu choices, my one regret is the rush that it happened in, I don't think Yuzu pushed it too fast, but rather I gave the lock option too early. I agree it's turned out well, but I was perssonally a Maho-chad. I'm glad people like the individual character scenes and wil try to weave more in.

Maho would've been super cool too, though perhaps with less chance for interaction. But the times we would get to interact would be all the sweeter because of that rarity.

>Early night. Everything is done by this point, let your team have a stress-free night.

You arrive at the warehouse as it fills up. Everyone on the team has filtered in – it’s the last practice before the match – definitely important, right? You watch it all and frown though.

From what you can tell both through paperwork and talking to the crews themselves, there’s nothing really to be done. The tanks have been thoroughly checked and re-checked throughout the last week with those that needed work done on them getting it done in that time. There’s still bits and pieces of busywork – Rabbit team’s trying to beat a dent out of their tank with a mallet, and the history club are messing with a spare track link.

“It’s not helping,” you sigh as you watch what the club is doing.

“What isn’t helping?” Ruby asks from next to you. She’s polishing a bullet for your MG for some reason, only proving your point.

“What everyone is doing right now,” you explain, gesturing to Rabbit and herself. “There’s no need for anyone to be here.”

“Then let them go home,” Ruby shrugs. “So they can rest up for the fight tomorrow.”

“Yeah,” you nod as you consider it. “Let’s do it.” You climb up Werewolf, but instead of mounting up, you use him as a platform and shout.

“Everyone! Practice is over! Go relax before the match tomorrow!” You repeat it a couple times, and a game or two of Chinese whispers is necessary but soon everyone gets the message, and most people begin to file out. Some stay to socialise, but they’re not working anymore which is the point. You don’t see Miho filter out though.

You move through the warehouse to the lounge-turned-command-post at the back where Miho is set up.

“I’ve let the rest of the team go,” you say. “Let them get some rest before the big match.”

“Probably for the better,” she nods. “All this preparation can be pretty tiring.”

“Yours in particular?” You ask.

“I wouldn’t say that, but yes, it is,” she replies. “Very tiring.”

>“If you say so.” Sling her over your shoulder and deliver her to Anglerfish team.
>Give her a minute to make the right decision and leave of her own accord. Carry her out if she doesn’t.
>Leave her to it. She’s smart enough to realise if she’s overdoing it.

>“If you say so.” Sling her over your shoulder and deliver her to Anglerfish team.

“Yeah,” Miho nods, not really paying attention. She turns her attention back to the map, so she doesn’t notice as you walk up behind her.

“Wha? Ah, no!” Miho complains as you lofty her over your shoulder. “Fritz! Put me down!”

“You said you were tired,” you reason as you head out from the lounge into the warehouse. “Thus you obviously need to be picked up.”

“Fritz! People can see my underwear!” She complains.

“Most of those people are girls, it’s fine,” you reassure her. “Or are you afraid that they’ll see they’re boko-themed.”

“Don’t look!” She whines, ineffectually hitting your back with her hands.

“It was more of a guess,” you chuckle. “An accurate one I suppose from that.”

“I hate you,” Miho groans. “You’re fired, Azusa’s replacing you.”

“She’ll probably do a better job than me,” you reply. “Well in a couple years, today it’s probably about even.”

It takes you a minute to work your way through the tanks, especially with Miho on your shoulder as you don’t want to slam her into anything.

“Anglerfish team!” You call to the girls as you spot them, about to leave the warehouse. “I got something that belongs to you, where should I put it?”

“You can put it here!” Yukari offers. You see Hana look at Miho over your shoulder and giggle while the others look confused.

“I don’t think so,” you reply. “It will probably go missing in the warehouse.”

“Best to deliver it to my place then,” Hana smiles. “I’ll make sure it doesn’t disappear.”

“Of course, lead the way,” you smile back. The six of you, one unwillingly, head back to Hana’s place. Only when you’re in the door do you finally put Miho down who immediately rearranges her skirt while glaring at you.

“Would you care to stay for a while, Fritz?” Hana offers.

>Decline and go find Yuzu.

>Accept Hana’s offer.

“Sounds great Hana,” you reply, closing the door behind you. You take off your shoes and place them alongside those of Anglerfish team. You take a couple steps in before realising that unlike the rest of you, Hana is not living in an apartment. She has an entire house to herself, and from the looks of it, it’s just as big as the one that the History Club shares between the four of them.

“Nice place,” you say as you enter the living room. It’s very expensively decorated, lots of decorations and fancy furniture that looks painful to sit on.

“My mother chose it,” Hana explains. “It’s a little bit…excessive for one person I think.”

She leads you through the living room to another living room. This one however is decorated more like you’d expect from a teenage girl, with less expensive furniture, though the TV is massive, and there’s more flowers than you’d expect though, that’s probably Hana being Hana.

“Please all, take a seat,” Hana says. “I’ll bring refreshments, and one more will be joining us shortly.”

“Ruby probably,” Yukari guesses. She’s proven right as a few minutes later, your gunner walks in and notices the five of you.

“I wasn’t expecting so many people,” she says after a moment.

“Is that a problem?” You joke as Hana returns with drinks and snacks.

“Not really,” Ruby replies. “Hana is just embarassed by the house so she doesn’t invite people around often.”

“Untrue,” Hana huffs, without elaborating, getting a laugh from the rest of the table.

Fin.

The thread’s on page 10, so let’s stop here. Sorry for the glacial pacing. Things have been hectic, but hopefully next thread we can get straight into tank battles.
