You are surrounded by blackness, warmth and silence. Time isn’t even a concept you understand, until suddenly… you do. It is pitch black in your room, and the sheets still swaddle you but there is a strange light coming through the crack of your door. You hear a noise, something that shouldn’t be especially considering you live alone. A modest house, away from the city specifically to avoid situations like this. Even out in the country, trouble still has a way of finding you it seems. The cause of that strange noise has to be a burglar, what else could be in your house at this hour? It’s a good thing you carry something near your bed just for emergencies like this, but… what was it?

>Grab Replica Sworde
A blade from your favorite anime! Sure, the edge isn’t sharp but the spiked pommel should be enough to at least draw blood. It certainly drew enough of yours the day you bought it at a convention.

>Grab Fishing Pole
Why would you have a sword? A good fishing rod is a much better way to spend your money. Besides, what can beat the peaceful experience of being out on the lake?

>Grab Screwdriver
You spend most of your days tinkering indoors, why would you ever consider going outside? No thank you, there is plenty to occupy you without needing to be roasted by the sun or devoured by insects.

>Grab Large Tome
Really, there is nothing better than a good book. Fiction, Non-Fiction, it doesn’t matter to a bookworm like you. You sure do love reading about history and mystery alike, hopefully you don’t end up as both.

>Write In
Hmm, perhaps none of those seem right… What were you interested in, again?

Twin Mateba Model 6 Unica Autorevolvers. One silver and one black to look like the ones from your favorite anime. Too bad you didn't actually have any bullets. You bought'em and changed the color for the aesthetics.

You roll out of bed, trying to navigate your room in the dim light while avoiding the many items strewn about. You almost trip over a pile of books left stacked directly on the floor, having run out of space on your bookshelf long ago. Fortunately, you catch yourself and are able to feel around your desk for one of the many tools you keep on hand. You grab a handle at random, and are satisfied to feel the reassuring heft of a claw hammer as you continue to creep towards the door. Slowly and silently the door swings open, as you walk down the dimly illuminated hallway towards the source of the light, and a potential life and death situation. You round the corner, your heart beating faster as you step resolutely towards the only place the intruder could be… the kitchen. You stride forward, readying your hammer in both hands as your bare feet slap on the tile floor. You prepare yourself, though what you find isn’t anything you considered likely. An old man dressed in garb you could only describe as wizardly, serenely drinking your beer while munching on the chips you had been saving. The bastard! Still, your confusion overpowers your outrage as he turns to face you, chip fragments still trapped in his large beard.

“Hark, otherworlder!” He stands up from your kitchen table, standing proudly before you with your beer still in hand.

> ”Who the hell are you, and why are you in my house?”

> ”Hey, get your hands off my beer you bitch!”

> ”Hark, Gandalf.”

Stunned for a moment, you consider your response as the bearded man sits silently, sipping from the open can. There are only two realistic possibilities here, either your friends are staging an elaborate out of season april fool’s joke or this man is mentally unstable. Ahh what the hell, might as well see what he has to say. Who knows, it might be funnier if you just play along.

“Hark, Gandalf! What brings a wizard like you to a place like this?” You respond, your voice dripping with sarcasm.

“Treat me with more respect, boy! I bring you your destiny. ” The robed intruder says, standing up from the table as he approaches you. He reaches a hand out, causing you to jump back but it’s too late!

Strange colors fill your mind, replacing your kitchen with what you somehow KNOW is another time and place. The colors blur at first, but resolve into a watercolor depiction of a large castle being besieged by winged creatures breathing flame and devouring the populace within. The images transition to something else, a sinister black tower lit with red lights, somehow commanding these creatures for its own fell purpose.

The vision shifts again, the tower’s light extinguished and its commands replaced by silence. A shift back to the fortress from before, no longer a battlefield but a mass grave. Weeping is the only sound, smoldering corpses littering the ground. The sight fades as you find yourself in familiar territory, the dim kitchen lights a welcome sight.

“What the fuck?” You exclaim, rubbing your temple in confusion.

“Though Exodus was defeated the lands lay in near complete ruin. This is the third time that the darkness of the human heart has led to the edge of oblivion, and it cannot be allowed to happen again. Using great magics I have sought you out, among the infinite stars you are one of the few who has the potential to help the great kingdoms purge their darkness.” He reaches out his free hand, expecting you to take it.

You look on, not completely registering what he just said. “Uh, what?” You pull yourself up from the ground, unsure of how to proceed.

“You possess the capacity for great virtue, and only that light will see my home safely into the future.”
He grabs your shoulder, pushing you towards the open door. Outside in the moonlight you see a glowing, rectangular… thing. It pulses with energy, making your arm hair stand straight up.

“Come, take the moongate and embrace your destiny.”

>Hold on. Virtue? Potential? Your... sorcery... looks legit, old man, but I'm going to need to know more before I sign up for ADVENTURE. Also, I could collect some stuff that could come in handy. Does this lead to wilderness or civilization? What's the climate like? Is magic trainable or a gift you either have or don't? Will I be able to get back eventually?

guys, what do we need to take on the ADVENTURE?

Even the crickets seem to be silent tonight, a low fog covering the ground as the magical gate casts a soft blue glow across the field behind your house. A full moon hangs in the sky above, sharing the unnatural blue hue.

“Wha, uh, what? C-can I have a minute to think about it?” You manage to blurt out after a moment spent staring straight into the gate.

The old man stares at you, his expression impenetrable. “Prepare yourself as you wish, but don’t tarry long. Fate is a mistress who waits for none, not even me.” He sips from the can once again before throwing it aside with a flourish, the empty container floating in the air for a moment before dissipating into a cloud of glowing insects. L

This was something new, something you had never even considered a possibility. Deep inside you though, a part of your deepest being knows that this isn’t really a choice. You would spend the rest of your life wondering about the truth if you didn’t step through this gate.

He mentioned destiny, some great potential of yours… There was always a feeling that you were meant for more, that you were different. Life had taught you that sort of thinking was just adolescent fantasy, but you couldn’t deny the man standing before you now. It is time to get prepared.

You quickly dash inside, changing into jeans and a hooded leather jacket before grabbing your weathered backpack and begin gathering supplies. Canned food and a few other basics quickly go inside the bag. You look down at your side, the hammer you grabbed earlier still in your hand. You’ve nailed more than a few nails with this thing, so it feels comfortable in your palm. You put it through your belt loop, before looking for something else to use as a weapon. After a bit of consideration, you grab your father’s old hunting rifle and put it aside. Who knows what could be on the other side of that portal? It is best to bring as much power as possible, right?

You begin to leave, but suddenly realize that you have no idea when you would be returning, if ever. A few mementos to remind you of home go into your sack, a few favorite books and a deck of trading cards from your youth are the last things to be sealed away. Locking your door behind you, you turn to the old man.

“Alright Gandalf, I’m ready to go.”

He frowns at you, before pointing a finger at your rifle.
“That is a far too crude implement for where you are going, I think.”
He snaps his fingers, and your gun vanishes in an instant.

“H-hey, that was important you dick!” You exclaim, annoyed at the thought of losing an heirloom.
>>
>>5333812
He scoffs. “Worry not, I simply returned it to where it belongs. Besides, do you think Bilbo carried a gun on his journey?”

You stare at him in shock. “Wait, what did you just-”

Without giving you time to respond further he grabs your shoulder and with a knowing smirk firmly shoves you through the blue portal.

Stars fly past your face as you feel your mind drifting away, darkness being filled with increasingly bright spots of light, filling up your entire field of vision with a blinding whiteness until… You feel the ground beneath your feet once more, birdsong ringing out as you blink your eyes. A bright, mid-day sun shines down fiercely as you look at your surroundings, which happens to be that of a clearing in the middle of a dense forest. You see a dirt path cutting through the middle, but the forest is so dense you can’t see where it goes. Grass is at your feet, and to your side you see an ornate wooden carriage to the side of said path with no horses to pull it.

Also at your feet are a few leather bound books, entitled “Magic for the uninitiated” and “The history of Britannica”.

What dost thou do?

Grab the books, maybe flip through them to see what style they’re, stow them for later reference and knock on the wagon door in case it’s occupied

You pick up the two small volumes in front of you, quickly paging through them. The pages are thick, and they are clearly hand-written but the language inside is English. You find that somewhat strange, but you skim through them regardless before putting the tomes aside for now.

They mention the realm being called Sosaria, though you aren't sure if it is referring to the planet or just the continent. Presumably you are currently in the nation of Brittanica, or Brittania. It is ruled by someone named... Lord British? A supposedly immortal king who arose hundreds of years ago from nowhere to lead the kingdom to prosperity.. or so the book says.

Three Evils are mentioned in the book, Werdna, Mondain, and Exodus. Before you can learn much more about them than their names, you close the books and walk towards the small carriage in front of you.

You reach towards the ornately carved door handle, though after a moment of thought you rap on the side instead.

“Hello?” you call out.

“Oh, come in, come in!” You hear an old woman’s voice yell in response.

The door opens with a creak, revealing a colorful interior. Warm wood, and metal curios hung from the ceiling adorn surround an old woman dressed in a vibrant, patchwork shawl. Before her is a small table, a variety of cards spread out before her. They aren't written in english, and seem quite old.

“Hello there child, have you come to seek guidance on your path?” Her voice is gentle and melodic, but surprisingly loud.

> “Uh, sure? I don’t have any money, though I have a few cards you might find interesting.”

> “Ah, no. I’m lost actually, do you think you could give me directions”
