/qst/ - Quests

The great war has dragged on to just a few weeks shy of the first year of the conflict that has seen the two countries of the lowlands thrust into war, at first by the Prußenmarkians and then by the Gallonians. However the brave pilots of 14e Escadre Mixte "Liberté" continue to serve diligently and bravely despite increased losses of late. Yet even with this, there has been a disturbing string of murders near the front. Something that you, lieutenant-colonel Helene Valmont, have decided to get to the bottom of. Investigating the only Escadron that thus far could be tied to all these crimes and it's pilots. That of Rouge.

========================================================

This is a continuation of the last Air Wing Commander Quest Thread. I plan on continuing this until real life kills me literally or metaphorically, you get yourself killed, or the war ends. Rules are on the first page of the original thread, and the second thread is also listed below in order.
https://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/2022/5285615/

Also if you are wondering why it took 4 days since the archive of the last thread, I didn't expect it to go from top of page 10 to archived. So I took a short break. This also has nothing to do with the release of a new game I swear. Also it pains me that it got archived in the middle of a conversation.

"I appreciate the sentiment, though who exactly are you referring to with the one exception?" You ask having a bit of a hunch.

"Oh they are just someone who cannot coordinate with others in the slightest in the air and cannot take an ounce of responsibility for their own actions and mistakes." Roselyn says dismissively.

"Right...So, how have you spent your leave exactly? Given you are on the reserve list."

"I wouldn't exactly call being given easier assignments and not going up into the air being on leave. Though I've mostly been spending it writing letters to home and reading what books or newspapers are actually on base. I've not done too much else other than what limited tasks were assigned to me during this time. It's not the best, but it's relaxing enough, especially after a long time flying." She says in a far more neutral tone.

"Alright. I have to ask though, what sets you on edge? The war? The little things, or something else?" You ask hoping to get a bit more information on themselves that could be important.

"What do you mean 'something else'?" She ways with a bit of suspicion, though after says "I'd say it's mostly the little things like how infuriating some people who would be more at place in a bar than a battlefield that I have the misfortune of dealing with are. The war really isn't stressful at all to me. Unless they invade Sveiterland and reach my hometown to bombard it with artillery, they aren't going to do much to tick me off compared to what some so called mechanics and pilots are able to do...Though I must admit most of this anguish can be attributed to some more than others..." She says with a fair bit of annoyance in her tone. Though, she still seems to be expecting an answer as to what you meant...

"So you mentioned earlier a bit about your families origins, and how you had a little brother. Do you mind telling me a bit more about them?" You ask, a part of you worrying that maybe she'd grow a bit concerned over the question.

"Well, as I mentioned earlier my family has a fair few ties to Sveiterland. In fact my relatives still in the country are nobility. Despite what you might think most in Sveiterland who are nobles still took up more common trades even long ago though so they still worked for what they have. It's something that I need to remind some people who use it as an excuse to dismiss my statements...Regardless, my own parents are fairly affluent and hold a decent amount of political power. I believe your own family is heavily involved in politics if I recall correctly. While my own isn't as well known or powerful we don't need to be. We just want to ensure what's best for our little part of Gallonia. As for my younger brother, he's quite a bit younger than me. I suppose it's likely for the best given he'd likely join the air corps or army in general like myself to try and become a knight or similar. And while I want him to succeed in his ambitions I'm well aware war isn't as glorious as it used to be. I have been trying to nudge him to go for the air corps or as an officer or general if he does join, even if it will be years from now before he's eligible to do so. The next best thing is him following in my father's footsteps but he's a bit...disinterested in most of the finer points of his work. Something that makes my attempts to steer him towards safer lines of work a bit more difficult..." She clearly sounds concerned when she speaks of her little brother. Even though from the sounds of things it'll be some time before he'll be involved in the war, if it doesn't end before he's old enough to join...
>>
With this, you give a nod before asking something you've been wondering for some time. "So, I'm sure you are well aware of the...rumors about you. Why do you think people view you as paranoid and aggressive? At least, in your own words and opinion."

"I am not paranoid nor am I aggressive. I am shrewd, vigilant and secure. And I am well aware that there are people who are manipulative and whom have ulterior motives that do not align with this Escadron or our countries goals. People who would doom our missions and efforts and undermine the war effort. People who I will never allow to get their way. The reason I believe some might think of me as aggressive is simply because I am direct and honest. If I don't trust someone I will not hide my distrust as that will only cause problems later down the line and potentially cause our missions to falter. And even then, I'm not distrustful of those who do not warrant it. In fact there are countless examples I can bring up where I wasn't 'paranoid' or 'aggressive' when questioning the actions of another. The most recent being the last time Sarra became drunk...Where did you get these rumors from anyway?" She says all of this fairly calm, if a bit miffed initially before shifting to more disappointment than anything else.

"It's come from a number of sources...They are called rumors for a reason." You swiftly say.

"I can guess the source of them at the very least..." Roselyn flatly says before you move on.
>>
"So. I've asked every pilot this, and I'd like your input as well. But how do you view the Escadron and by extension Escadre? Or the war for that matter?" You ask wondering how her view of the war will be.

"I've already mentioned a few of the...problems that have plagued me, but with regards to the Escadron itself I think that some caution should be given to Catherine, Amélie and Calantha. The former should be blatantly obvious. The latter I feel is more so doing all of this for her own gain rather than any commitment to this country and simply trying to take advantage of the war...Meanwhile Amélie simply is a risk due to her naivety. Besides, her childishness clashes harshly with Catherine's own immaturity...There's also the ground crew, but I've already expressed in detail why they might be problematic. Despite that I can only commend Hahewisa for her devotion to our cause, and Haydée is doing her best despite the situation. Yda is just a great person who I could only wish wasn't stuck in this situation given their more pacifistic nature...Although I suppose I'm merely repeating myself... I suppose I have to give some credit to Sarra for staying alive like myself despite the efforts of our enemy. But she has her own problems...As for the war itself. I believe it needs to be ended in a decisive victory as soon as possible. Even with soldiers exhausted and supply lines stretched we need to keep pushing until the Prußenmarkians collapse or clamor for a peace treaty. The longer the war goes on the more likely terrible things will happen to not just Gallonia but Europa as a whole. Time is not on our side. The Pretan navy has shown itself incapable of dealing with the High Sea fleet that was the Kaiser's personal prestige project. And while Varuskie is doing well, they have terrible supplies and while their tsar is apparently a decent commander I doubt he has the logistics required to maintain the forces he has while still keeping them an effective fighting force capable of dealing with the forces of our enemies. Further, just as we have brought in new allies, so too will our enemy. I'd not be surprised if Agdemark or Jutden decided to abandon their farcical neutrality for the opportunity at Varuskie land or otherwise just to make it official. It doesn't matter how we achieve this decisive victory. Only that we do achieve it by the grace of god." The latter part of what she says seems to be with a fair bit of zeal and seriousness, the former being the most surprising.

>Ask Roselyne how she thinks Gallonia could win the war faster

I don't really think there is any way to win substantially faster honestly, the way WW1 was fought was not something that could just be avoided by 'doing X" differently from what I understand. Still, may as well make her feel heard. Honestly, the Pretan crit fail was a fluke, we should stay the course, decisive battles or going at a high tempo is fine and all, but we aren't going to be able to ride one quick battle to victory or pursue some silver bullet hyper-aggressive strategy.

>Ask Roselyne about the murders and what she knows about them.

No point trying to beat around the bush, we aren't accusing anyone of anything yet and while she is more suspicious than most, that doesn't mean anything at this stage. Just ask what she thinks, what she knows of where people where at what times. Most important of all is her suspicions regarding the ground crews, and I guess her own alibi.

How often does she attend Mass? Also ask what she thinks about Socialists, Trade Unions and the like. I suspect she is the Gallonian counterpart to a High Tory.

> the way WW1 was fought was not something that could just be avoided by 'doing X" differently
Well, Bataille de La Somme was awful and a huge waste of material and manpower, while failing their stated objective of piercing the frontlines.
>>
>>5420185
Sure, I'm not saying there weren't stupid things that could've been avoided, there were good and bad generals, hypothetically there could've been superior alternatives to someone like Luigi Cadorna and their actions.

My point is that generally there was no silver bullet that could've decisively and easily won the war, the tech for tanks and air power wasn't there, infiltration tactics may have had their start attributed to WW1 but they couldn't have won the war alone, making choices differently like "conduct X operation slightly differently" or "develop hurricane barrages earlier" aren't exactly war enders. Basically, there was no one strategy or miracle operation that when conducted perfectly would've easily won the war, nor was the tech where it needed to be to enable the tactics that would overthrow the WW1 paradigm.
>>
>>5420185
Somme was hardly a waste -- it diverted the Germans away from Verdun when France was on the brink, and it killed off the last German pre-war regulars.
>>
"Well, given your belief in the need to end the war quickly, what do you suggest?" You ask, curios as to what she'd think of.

"There are a variety of factors at play that could help. But first and foremost we should break them. Their forces were in retreat and yet our own stopped. I understand that logistics are important but we have some of the best rail lines in the world, and those were built by our own people. We should have a fast team of rail workers and logistics personnel right behind the army constantly funneling guns and men to the front and relentlessly strike while the iron is hot rather than let it grow cold and resilient. The fact we do not have such specialized brigades is a mistake. Further, there is no need to restrain ourselves against their forces. They broke the laws of war with gas against the Varuskie, there is no reason we should continue adhere to them against their soldiery. Though, their civilians shouldn't be exempt unlike their soldiers. Otherwise some pilots should be replaced with far more competent personnel. The air is crucial to maintain so the bombers from Lothring cease to cause problems for us and to ensure we have free reign over the enemies air space. Thirdly, I feel foreign intervention would be great help in this war. I would suggest the Confederacy of Abmeryk States but they are divided given the recent...intervention into Lothring. Further, Sveiterland itself is also divided as to whom to support much as I hate to admit it. However, greater support from the Cipanto Empire with our efforts outside of Asu would be great. Yet I doubt it. The best thing that could be done at the moment in this regard I believe is to force the businesses of Abmeryk and all other states who don't share a land border with our enemy to trade with us and not them through the continued blockade. Yet given the fact that Pretany no longer rules the waves I have my doubts as to the viability of such an action. Especially with continued efforts from our enemies own naval forces." She seems to have actually put in a fair bit of thought into this.

"I see...I must admit I was not expecting such detail from you. Have you thought about this for a while?" You ask further

"Yes, after all while I view the end to the war as swiftly as possible imperative, I know full well that winning isn't as simple as just improving one aspect of our fight against our enemy. One might wish that this was the case, but if things were so simple, it would be just as easy for the enemy to do so against us." She adds further.

"I suppose...It would still be nice though if things were guaranteed to end in our favor. Though at the moment things are going well for us." You say, trying to give some reassurance.

"Perhaps. But things can change. And the longer we take the worse it will be for us. However we are only a small part of the efforts undertaken here...We can't do everything, even if we try." She says with a serious tone that has a hint of agitation to it.
>>
"I suppose one can call this related to the rumors I asked about earlier, but what are your thoughts on the murders that have been happening at the front? You ask hoping she doesn't suspect anything.

"I have heard a bit about them from the newspapers and some of the conversations some other pilots have had, yet...They feel absurd. Sure, I'd believe some sort of vile murderer like the type Pretany had to deal with in their capital is out and about but...Sowing buttons into their victims eyes? Really? That simply sounds like senseless sensationalism to try and draw more eyes and sell more copies, perhaps also to sow more fear or make the murders more significant. If they are simply exaggerating, I suppose their fearmongering is at least for a decent reason more than pushing up profits given who this killer apparently targets... Though I must admit I know very little of this as outside of some gossip, I have only skimmed over one article in the papers... Regardless, exaggeration or not they are a sick and twisted individual who deserves no mercy and should be killed on the spot once proven the perpetrator of such horrible crimes!" She sounds fairly cold and almost scary at the end of their statement, though otherwise was calm while she spoke.

"Understandable. It is a very strange modus operandi and method of mutilation..." You say, thinking for a bit before continuing. "I have to ask, given how you mentioned god a fair bit. Do you go to mass?"

"Of course! I used to go all the time back home. Though I admit recently I have struggled to find much time for it given how often I'm pulled away into the air. But when there's a congregation so long as my duty to this country doesn't stop me I will gladly join it. I wish I could always join however. Though I know such is impractical. It's quite important to me at least. Though I accept that sometimes despite my desires my country needs me elsewhere, and perhaps god as well..." She seems accepting of the fact she cannot always go, though clearly it's important to her at least.

Giving a nod, you soon after ask "I suppose you can consider this somewhat related, but what do you think of the Unionists and syndicalists? Along with some of your beliefs politically."

"I highly doubt the effectiveness of such things, however given the nature of the industrial revolution and the working conditions that some have been put under I can understand their agitation, all be it misguided. As for myself, I personally believe that traditional values of faith should remain quite strong, and I believe that there should be a number of people who can serve as a guard to proper morals and as good inspiration and paragon's of virtue. I believe nobility can serve this role. And I believe my own family does such quite well, at least in Sveiterland. I know that the latter desire is impractical here in Gallonia however, but I still hold it to be a worthy cause. One that perhaps the clergy can hold here." She says with conviction.

Not really considering her a suspect at this point, but I am curious just how reactionary she can be. From Wikipedia, I see that the 1905 law that established laicite is not in effect in some parts of eastern France. . .

"Considering this, what other beliefs do you hold exactly in general?" You ask with a bit of curiosity to see if she was merely a religious conservative or reactionary given her statements. Though she'd hardly take time to answer.

"Well, I personally believe that schooling and policy making should have religious framework. I view it as quite important that the people of any country should have the faith hold an important sway in everyday life especially here in Europa for the betterment of society. I don't mind that many others aren't as zealous as myself however, yet I feel that those who are as zealous as myself or more so go about things in the wrong way. I feel it would be best for this country and any other in Europa to let those who aren't faithful be, even if based around religion. Despite what one might think I'm fine with those who hold different beliefs. Proselytizing to a large number of people isn't the way forward. It just doesn't work in these days. It is far better to instead show the advantages of a religious society compared to one who's people have abandoned their faith or hold another and make people slowly adopt doctrine and, hopefully faith, elsewhere and bring a shining utopian future to this world through proving that a society built on faith is far better than one that is separate from it. Despite this, I'm fine with some things changing, even if I know some things aren't the right way to a better future, such as syndicalism. One can hold poor beliefs and still make a point after all..." It was clear Roselyne had an interesting perspective...

"What about politics? Economic policy and so on." You ask further.

"Well, I believe protection of our nations goods is important as local businesses are crucial to maintain our independence. Especially smaller businesses, as the modest are the most beautiful in a sense. Of course, this shouldn't be to such an extent that it becomes mercantilist. We still need proper trade with other countries after all. Though, tariffs should be risen highly against immoral countries. Otherwise, I would say I am fairly liberal. While I hold dear tradition and faith, I do believe there is a point to some of the more modern political thought. Alms should be given to the poor, and this should ideally be done through the clergy. I also believe that the safety of the people is important and a far greater amount of funding be delivered to services like police. Along with far harsher sentencing for certain despicable crimes." They seem to believe what they are saying, despite some aspects being a bit strange...

After this, you continue the conversation a bit before thanking Roselyne for her time. After which you look for Amélie. Walking around the base, you faintly hear music from some sort of phonograph in one area of the base but hardly think anything of it as you search for her, though after a while you find that the source of the sound is also where the guardian angel is spending their time. A small room not really used for much that seems to have been claimed by the woman who, having finally properly seen her in person, clearly looks like an angel of sorts with long blonde hair, blue eyes, and soft and gentle features. She seems to hardly notice you as you enter, if at all, as she works on a canvas as orchestra music plays from the phonograph you heard earlier. You stand there silently for a bit, waiting for her to notice you, and even clear your throat, but she only seems to actually acknowledge your presence once the phonograph ceases it's operation and she pauses her work to reset it and potentially set it to play another song.

Upon noticing you, she simply stares for a few seconds before saying "Commander...? You're actually here?! I'm quite happy to finally have the pleasure of meeting you miss Val!" She sounds quite cheerful, though she'd glance at her painting and say "Uhm, I might be a bit distracted while we talk, if you don't mind me continuing my work. Actually, would you like a portrait of yourself? I'd gladly make one! If you want something heroic or more traditional I can easily make one for you! I presume you would like it in Neo-Classicism style? Or maybe you'd like a Neo-Impressionism work of the base! I'm talented in a number of different styles, though those two are my favorites, at least currently. I've seen some interesting works from the east that look quite unique, and there's always more Avant-garde works that are quite fascinating coming out all the time...Or at least were...I guess that sort of thing has slowed down with the war, huh..." Well, someone certainly matches what you were told about them. Though probably far more excitable than anyone would have expected...

With the...extensive enthusiasm from Amélie, you find yourself more than a little curios as to why. So, you simply ask. "Why are you so excited to meet me? I get that I'm important to your Escadron but there has to be more than that, right?"

"Oh! It's simply because of all you've done! I know the papers don't give you anywhere near as much credit but if it wasn't for your hard work I'd never become an ace and this Escadron wouldn't exist! At least, not in the way it does now. Besides, you are an icon! One of if not the most successful woman to hold the position of a proper officer! I'm sure eventually people will come to understand your major contributions to the war effort are just as impactful and important as my own!" She seemed very, very cheerful...You get why Roselyne called her childlike given that's the only term you'd use to call her wonder and awe to you.

"Alright, alright. I get it. You don't need to try and praise me more than necessary." You say trying to be humble.

"If anything I haven't given you praise enough yet!" She swiftly says with a smile.

"Anyway, you mentioned the offer of a painting. I suppose I could accept such after a bit of c-" you manage to get out before you are interrupted

"Wonderful! I wonder what you'd like? Maybe more traditional attire with a sword upon a horse? Or maybe you'd like to be next to an aircraft in pilot's uniform? Or perhaps a more classical portrait sitting upon a chair in formal attire fitting for a ballroom! Or did you rather art of this place? A aircraft? Maybe some sort of battle in the sky? More importantly, what style would you like? Classical? Neo-Classical? Maybe Realism? Perhaps Impressionism? Or would you rather something more exotic?" She pauses before she realizes she interrupted you and swiftly adds "Oh, uhm, sorry for interrupting you commander...I uh...As you can tell am just very excited." She seems a bit embarrassed with her mistake, not looking at you for a bit.

"It's...fine..." You say, which gets her to look back at you and her eyes light up again a bit. Swiftly you say as to ideally not be interrupted again "I must ask first before we carry on about art, what do you think of the Escadron and how it's been managed?"
>>
This swiftly gets Amélie to ponder for a bit before she seemingly adds a few things to the canvas she had with a few strokes. Her attention briefly shifted before she pauses and says "I think it's fine. Maréchal Marchal does her best! Though I think Cat gives her a headache at time. I suppose it's fitting though, she's as grouchy as an angry kitty after all. But I guess you more mean the way things have been run here. I'd say I'd like a bit more freedom of movement and such but otherwise it's fine! I managed to get this room all to myself since it wasn't being used for anything and I can do whatever I like in here after all! Like painting while listening to wonderful music! But uh, in the air things are a bit chaotic. I'm not sure if those with higher ranks above me other than Maréchal Marchal are...uh...good really. They kinda tend to just...fall out of the sky. Kinda like flies when you swat them. I do my best to protect them though! But sometimes they just...do really dumb things that don't work and...it's kinda sad..." She seems a bit distracted when mentioning this, slightly upset and maybe a tad sad thinking about it, but not too much oddly. "Otherwise, I think the orders you give us are great! Though I think you can guess my favorite kind of mission!" And just like that she switches to a much more cheerful mood.

"Right...What do you think of the other members of the Escadron then?" You ask curios as to how her...unique view will come across.

"Oh I like the ones that stay with the Escadron and don't leave a lot! The Rose is harsh but it's fun seeing her interactions with the ground crew, and she has some funny thoughts with how serious she always seems! Maréchal Marchal is great overall and kind! And Cat is extremely fun to talk to with how grouchy, annoyed and flustered she can become! Cal is quite fun to poke too and she always seems like an actor to me as if she deserves to be in a dark and dramatic play as the tragic villain and star of the show! The only one I don't really like I guess is Déprimée...Erm, that's Sarra. She always just seems...sad and miserable...And that's not fun. I think I maybe did something bad at first that made her not want to talk to me early on but I want to help her not be so...well...sad and miserable. I'm a guardian angel after all! I want to brighten peoples day! Even if I do tease them sometimes. But her's...I kinda can't." She returns to a sort of distracted state as she speaks of Sarra. Though after seems to push such things aside as she returns to painting, though you feel it pertinent to ask something that might distract from more somber things before asking about her thoughts on the war itself.
>>
After a bit of silence though as she quietly works on her painting, you decide to move on and ask "Can you tell me about yourself a bit?"

This quickly gets Amélie to say "Well, I was born to a destitute pairing and abandoned to an orphanage. Though I did eventually learn who my true mother and father were. Not nice people in the slightest. The family that properly adopted me though were a bit better off and were extremely kind and nice! They taught me to be generous and kind, though there's a fair few things they've said about politics I don't really care for about Syndicalism and how it's the revolutionary future for this country and Europa much like how liberalism was a hundred years ago and stuff like that...Otherwise I've always been a fan of flights of fancy and artistic things like painting, sowing, music and so on. I wanted to be an artist when I grew up but seeing the opening in the Army Air Corps and the whole war thing I thought I could take a shot. Besides, I could save people and protect them. And I really have become something of a heroic knight of a fairy tail! A hero to the country and the world!" She seems cheerful again, though she probably won't be after the next question you had in mind.

"What do you think of the war in general, Amélie?" It's a simple question, though it's one that leaves Amélie silent for a bit.

"I...I think at least in my position it's like noble knights fighting for what they believe in. Something very romantic and right out of fairy tails and old stories back when kings lead armies. It's heroic, it's artistic, and it's beautiful...But...That's my experience. Our experience. A pilot's experience. I've heard a lot of not so nice things down below with the army. With the navy it's still dramatic and arguably heroic but...for the people in the trenches it's just..." She pauses, and doesn't continue, instead after a few seconds simply deciding to just return to her work. Though you notice that there's a slight twitch from one of her eyes that's swiftly met with one of her hands rubbing it a bit. You honestly aren't sure if she finds what's going on down there depressing, disgusting, angering or any mix of the three from the tone of her voice...

After a bit of silence as she simply returns to working on her art, you ask "Can you tell me a bit more about yourself Amélie? How you view yourself anyway."

"Oh! Well, I'm a guardian angel aren't I? I consider myself a protector of the pilots of Gallonia, and hopefully in the future those of Pretany, who are flying high above with me. Pilots in lesser aircraft incapable of defending themselves adequately from the enemy! A heroine able to strike down her vile foes from Prußenmark and their allies! I'd like to think I can be that on the ground as well, a shining beacon of kindness, generosity, chastity and diligence! I suppose I tease the people I know on the base a bit much at times, though some people like it! Cat certainly doesn't though, but I suppose that's what makes it so fun to mess with her a bit...Otherwise I suppose I can get a biiiit angry at my enemy in the air. Mainly when they manage to break through my defense and harm my fellow airmen and women. But, that's normal, isn't it? Otherwise I quite enjoy creative pursuits of art, music, and other such things. One thing I'd like to try in the future is sculpting, but I believe that likely will have to wait until after the war." She says this with a bit of excitement and a fair bit of cheer, as if what was talked about not a minute ago never happened. Perhaps she's deliberately ignoring such thoughts?

"Do you by chance have a portfolio I can see?" You ask, wondering if you could perhaps see her other works of art.

"You mean a collection of my art? Unfortunately, not really many at the moment. There's only three paintings at this base, and plenty of my works have been sold at auctions recently for the war effort as I'm sure you might have read in the papers. There's some at my home, but that's a fair distance from here. Still, I'll gladly show you the work I have if you'd like. If you so desire, you can take a look at the painting I'm currently working on, but it's far from finished. Maybe in a few hours I can show you the few others that are here? I hope you enjoy them, though I know they aren't perfect." She seems fairly happy at the idea of showing you some of her works, even if they probably aren't her best.

"I'll have to take you up on that offer later...Speaking of, did you make any while you were at training command? Related to that, what did you think of the pilots there?" You wonder what her view on them is.

"Well, I was able to make one painting while I was there of the pilot who I believe did the best there. A woman named Sabina Carrel I believe. She was quite nice, and I think a lot of them quite enjoyed my presence. Though, there were a few people who were...weird...They seemed to wish for me to become a fallen angel given some...things they desired. Some blatantly, some more discretely... I didn't like them. But the others were overall quite nice!" She clearly was a bit distracted and disturbed. Though you wonder what those pilots in training did.
>>
"I see. I'm sorry for your experience with some of them, but I am glad to hear those problems only came from a few of them and not the majority...Could you tell me a bit more though about your family? Both your adopted family and the one your blood is tied to?" You honestly are more curios about the former given what she said about their politics than the latter, but having both in mind would be quite good knowledge to have.

"Well, my adopted parents are a union leader and a political theorist. My father being the former and mother the latter. I never really fully picked up on their political stuff much but I do believe things should be made better for everyone in Gallonia! Although I don't know the best way to do that, I have at least some ideas! Anyway, my mother has made a few fairly long books about syndicalism and workers rights. I think one of them is quite popular but they are kind of...dry and not very interesting to me. I suppose the same can go for all politics...But yeah, they make a decent living and were able to raise me to become what I am today! If it wasn't for them I might have become an incredibly grouchy and upset person like Cat! And we wouldn't want that!" She seems fairly cheerful and joking talking about this, though she remains silent for a bit before you feel the need to remind her of the other part of your question.

"And your birth parents?" you simply say which drives Amélie to go silent for a bit.

"They...were destitute and desperate. At least, my mother was. She let herself be a toy to others under the orders of my father. A cruel and despicable man just as vile as the Prußenmarkians if not worse...I do not know if I should thank him for forcing my so called mother to abandon me or not...I hope Roselyne finds him." She says this with somberness that swiftly turns to a cold sort of fury unlike everything else she's said so far. It's a bit surprising given how different she sounds compared to earlier... After a bit of a pause, Amélie simply says "I'd rather not talk about them." before returning to her work.

Deciding to try and better understand her artistic process and her current work, you simply ask "Do you mind if I see what you are painting right now? I'm curios what it is."

After which Amélie smiles and gives a nod "Of course I don't mind! I'd say I'm about done with the main focus that's front and center of the work. But I need to work on the background and give some refinement to other portions, like the main object in the background. I've worked a bit on the latter but it's far from done." Coming over around and looking at the canvis, you notice the main thing that's been painted is a S.U.D Caraque R, with a fairly rough Bergen D.I in the background. The Dupont is quite well made and very realistic looking, with the rear gunner seemingly aiming at the Bergen. Noticeably the S.U.D seems to be carrying bombs, though one is missing from the rack. After a few seconds of silence, Amélie says "I have a few finishing touches I need to do for the fire of the rear gunner, but I think it's a bit of a dramatic piece. Though I admit that given the distances it's a bit close up. But that just adds to the urgency for those who actually fly I feel. And for those who don't, it shows it." She seems quite pleased with the work so far at the very least. Though you are well aware that it's likely far from finished. She would continue however "I plan on adding a detailed ground with farmland and a few portions burning from a bombing run, some ack ack in the background, a bomb that's been dropped and perhaps an aircraft or two a fair distance away from the main S.U.D."

"I must say, already it's quite impressive. I'm eager to see the final product. Tell me though, what do you tend to draw, and what inspires you?" You ask further interested in her artistic pursuits.

"What inspires me...That's a very good question. To be honest, I am not very sure myself. Sometimes it just...happens. I'm walking around the aerodrome, I'm about to go to sleep, sometimes when I'm flying in the air or when I was simply eating a meal. I just get an idea, usually based on something I've seen earlier, and then swiftly build upon it with further ideas and sort of become enamored with it for a time until I paint it. As for what I usually paint. It's usually landscapes, parts of towns, or most recently battles in the sky! Though I do quite like portraits too! Of course, it's a bit hard when you don't have someone to base it off of, but photographs do the job well enough as a base at times if I don't have anyone available, or if I'm trying to paint someone who doesn't actually exist outside my mind." With this said, she happily works further on her painting, adding more to the Bergen in her work of art.
>>
"Considering what you are painting. What are your thoughts on the aircraft you have been able to fly or fight against." you ask, realizing you haven't asked a question like this in a while, something probably important given the fact that there's been a fair few new enemy aircraft in the air since you last asked.

This gets her to pause and ponder. "Well, from what I've seen, the original S.U.D is a bit outdated and unable to defend itself. Proficient pilots who are able to break through or maneuver in such a way to negate the escort will break wings, tails, engines and pilots swiftly. Especially those who are crack shots. The Dupont 4 P at least can run away but isn't much better. From what I've seen the Faeco EL1 is incapable of fighting back, but is far from defenseless with it's maneuverability being comparable to a Bergen. So long as you aren't outnumbered in that Pretan plane, I think you'll be fine. But with no real way to fight back, you have to hope none of your fellow pilots if they are in it don't screw up either given you will struggle to get away in it. The Königstein is just flat out better than both, having the maneuverability and the speed. The Dupont 6 C is quite good. The position of the gun makes aiming a bit difficult and less accurate but you can compensate for it, at least partially. It also makes it a pain to reload. I personally prefer it with a Conley gun though, as you can feel the aircraft's performance increase with the lighter gun. Even if the firepower is lesser. I would say it is decent competition to a Bergen thanks to the extra maneuverability and speed, at least with a Conley. Without it's basically comparable all be it less accurate. Something that newer pilots I see constantly struggle with. The Faeco EL2 is kind of like a slower and slightly longer ranged C-N 3. It's just as maneuverable and quite stable from what I've seen, but I'd prefer the C-N if I had to pick one of the two, even if the EL2 is likely a joy to fly. This is purely due to the speed. It gives more options. The Koerkamp T.II is a monster of an aircraft that is well armed and hard to take down due to it's raw size. With an escort, it's practically untouchable with our current aircraft. Without, it's a tricky thing to take down for our lesser skilled pilots. For those of good aim though, the gunners can be dealt with or extensive focus fire on one of the pairs of engines or wings can take it down. I've not ever seen a Koerkamp C.I “Mus”, so I can't say much about those, but I can say the Kronlein CL.I is basically a slightly better S.U.D with the same problems while the Frÿg CL.IIa is kind of similar to our own newer Caraque. The Gaerhirfryn F.2 is. weird though. It's like it was made more to fight than to bomb or take pictures, yet still is a two seater..." She says calmly and surprisingly analytically.
>>
After a slight pause, she adds "I've yet to fight a Falke D.II but I'm concerned from what I heard it might cause another scourge. Not as dramatic as the first, but still. Not concerned for myself, mind you. But the other pilots. Well, except the kitty and l'As." She seems to turn to her more normal tone at the end of what she was saying.

Giving a nod, you swiftly say "I see. You seem to have a good understanding of how most of the aircraft you've flown or flown against work...How do you know about the Pretan Aircraft though? They aren't exactly used by our forces after all."

"Oh, that's simple. It's from what I've observed and heard of them. Of course, it's a bit harder to pin down with them as I'm not fully aware of their characteristics given I've not flown alongside them for that much time, or at all in some cases. But I can get information from speaking with pilots of other Escadrons. Or even just Pretan Squadrons. Though I'd say most Pretan pilots are kinda...untrained and more just rushed into the cockpit. It's not hard to get a response from either of them though, given my reputation." She seems to ponder something for a bit after saying this, but only briefly.

"Well, I suppose that's good to know...What do you think about the other nations in the war? Our enemies and our allies?" It's a simple question, but one that gets Amélie to think for a while.

"Pretany is quite nice honestly. At least, I think the people are. Even if our governments have been at each others throats multiple times in recent and ancient history. I do think their training policy is kind of sad and needs major reform though. Their pilots seem to just be trained how to take off, land, and not crash and nothing else. Just the basics. Nothing about combat, nothing about maneuvers. This leads to some creativity but it also leads to bad decisions being made that get pilots killed. This is especially true for the glory hounds among them. Varuskie is a place I don't have much experience in, but their emperor seems to be a good general and an inspiring person. From what I heard he's quite kind and close to a saint in some qualities. Even if running a country seems to be something he struggles with. Though most of what I know comes from the papers...Vitulia...I don't want to think about what's going on with them...Daloyaume is in a sorry state and has been hit hardest by the war so far I'd say. It's kind of sad and tragic how desperate many of it's people are becoming, and I'm kind of scared Lothring will end up the same way. They didn't exactly want to be in this war either, and we kinda...invaded them just for trading food to our enemies...Illyrpsja is holding out against all odds so far, which is nice. Though given what's happened...I feel as if they are kinda responsible for this. At least, if what I know about the whole assassination thing is true. Steyerland-Magyria is in a bit of a sorry state and I feel is really doing a poor job at fighting the war, which is good. But I feel a bit bad for their ruling family given what happened to kick this war off in the first place. Prußenmark is our hated enemy from long ago, that hasn't really changed. And we will avenge the injustices committed against us in the last war." She pauses for a moment to think.
>>
"I guess the last two nations I can think of are the Cipanto Empire and Sāriqīn Empire. The former I feel will benifit the most from this war when we win provided they aren't screwed over in the peace deal. The latter is...kinda irrelevant. They were called the sick man of Europa for a reason. I feel their empire won't survive this war." She seems to have put decent thought into answering your question here.

"Huh...I'm surprised you put so much thought into it." You state

"Well, you are my commander! If it wasn't for you I wouldn't be a hero! So, it's only fair I answer your questions as best as I can! Even if I don't think about some of them that much." She says with the same cheer you've grown accustomed to.

"I'm glad to hear that. I am curios though. What other passions do you have? Other than painting." You ask with curiosity.

"Well, I like music. I mentioned that before, but I don't think I mentioned I can play the piano or violin. I'm much better at the latter than the former though I'd say. I need a lot more practice with piano's, in my personal opinion. I also mentioned I like sowing, and that's true! Making clothing, dolls and stuffed animals is quite fun! Especially the reactions of people getting their gifts hand crafted by myself! Otherwise I suppose one other passion is self improvement. Getting better at my craft and so on. I also...kind of still like playing with toys...I know it's a bit childish but, it's nice..." She sounds almost a bit embarrassed her last comment. Ironic given how more than just that trait could be considered a bit childish... After a pause she continues. "I suppose the other thing I enjoy a lot is flying and defending people in the sky and striking down our foes. I didn't know what to think of it at first but it's really grown on me. I also like the public appearances and people looking up to me, not because I like myself too much or anything but because it gives inspiration to other people and allows me to potentially be what drives them to improve themselves as well! Along with obviously making them happy. I suppose when it comes down to it, the main thing I like is making people happy, thoughtful, or otherwise making them feel different things. I feel that I do that best with my art though, which is why it is my main passion...I suppose in a way your questions have helped me do some introspection! And for that I thank you!"

While it had been nagging you for a bit, the decision to ask about it comes into your mind. Why did Amélie mention she wanted Roselyne to find her biological father? "I see. I'm glad to hear you seem to be quite fond of the altruistic side of your work. Though, I have to ask about earlier...You mentioned you hoped Roselyne found your father. Why, exactly?"

Her jovial mood seems to fade a bit before saying "I said it for a reason...I take it you haven't talked to the Rose have you?"

"I have, but I still don't really get where you are coming from." You say, a bit confused.

"Well. She is harsh. If you asked about her view of criminals you would know what she'd have the justice system do to most crimes that are greater than mere petty thievery or drunken disturbance..." She goes silent after this, though you ask one thing to be sure.

"So, you think if she had things her way, he'd be executed if caught?" You inquire for confirmation. She simply nods in response. After a long silence, she does say something.

"There's a reason I don't like talking about them. I much rather my adopted family. My real family...It's strange too...Genuinely hating someone...I'm...not a fan of the feeling." She says this softly, though with a hint of concern, perhaps about herself.

"Lets talk about something else then. You mentioned you believed Illyrpsja is responsible for the war. Why, exactly?" You ask. Honestly you didn't think much of how the war started, though perhaps she has paid more attention to the papers than you have.

"Simple. The Brotherhood of Union...Have you heard of the April Coup? The one that rocked Illyrpsja a bit over ten years ago? A group of conspirators executed the king and queen in the night, along with a number of other government officials. All people aligned and backed by Steyerland-Magyria. It was a major thing, though I was a mere child when it happened. I'd not be surprised if you were or similar...Still, if you pay attention to the news reports, and just what has happened in Illyrpsja, this was something in the making long ago. A constructed plan to cause a 'defensive' war so as to be protected by the Varuskie Tzardom...Of course, the messy nature of the coup delayed things, but this...organization I believe is responsible for the assassination. I don't disbelieve the claims by Steyerland-Magyria after their interrogation of one of the people responsible for their arch duke's death. I think there was one major miscalculation with their plan however. They knew full well Steyerland-Magyria would fold like a house of cards against both them and the Tzardom. However, they forgot about Prußenmark and Bulģhakia. The latter hasn't made their move yet, but given the previous war, I wouldn't be surprised if they jumped soon. The former...well, you know how things fell to cause this great war."
>>
She gives a slight pause before finishing "Regardless, the Brotherhood of Union has received funding and training from the government of Illyrpsja for some time. It helps that they kind of replaced the government with their own people years ago to ensure that. But not many people pay to obscure semi secretive terrorist organizations in the backwaters of Europa known as the Balākhānh's." She once more seems highly analytical and calculated in her explanation, though after she adds "I don't really care about it too much though. It's given our nation the chance to right the wrongs of the past after all!" in a far more cheerful tone...Seems she agrees with the propaganda too, at least to some extent...

"How did you...find out all of this?" You ask surprised at her knowledge on the subject.

"Oh, I'm just interested in the most chaotic region of Europa! I mean, the Balākhānh region has always been kind of on fire and quite interesting, what with the constant wars. I mean, there's always the saying of those who put their hands into the Balākhānh fire will get burned. Still, Elada, Illyrpsja, Bulģhakia and Dacinia are interesting places. Sometimes stuff that happens there or which has happened there in the distant past has given me inspiration, too." An interesting method of drawing inspiration. Then again it often comes from the strangest of places.

"Right...Before we got sidetracked, I wanted to ask. How did you run into Pretan pilots? Where they on your PR tour? Training command? Or elsewhere?" You expected the answer to be yes in some regard or another.

"On one of the tours to the field hospitals I was able to meet some of the Pretan Pilots and some of their soldiers. I also wrote to a few of the more renowned ones to get some information, and on one occasion we were deployed right next to their air field so, I just sorta visited them a couple of times when I had the chance. I do quite like the look of the Faeco EL2. It just looks like a fun, unique aircraft! But, yeah...Nothing too special. Just have the chance to speak a bit to them about stuff, and some stuff went to their aircraft." Seems reasonable enough.

"How much more do you know of the Balākhānh region? Are you something of a fan of history for the region in particular?" You ask, wondering if you could get some more insight.

"Oh quite a bit of the more recent wars in the area, like the second Balākhānh war that essentially removed Bulģhakia's gains in the first. Somewhat ironic given it was Bulģhakia's fault the second one started. Still, I'd not be surprised if they tried getting some revenge on Illyrpsja or Dacinia. Especially when the former is being struck by our enemies. Though I think our recent successes have dissuaded them, at least in part. Otherwise, I know quite a bit of the area's more recent history. Part of it spurred on by a certain Pretan writer's gothic horror. Anyway, Varuskie has heavily focused on the region for quite some time, often at the expense of Sāriqīn. More distant history isn't as interesting to me though, mainly because it's just them under Sāriqīn rule. At least until you go very far back. And well, I'm mainly just interested in the region and it's more recent history rather than just history in general." she explains with a bit of thought.

"I see. I have to ask though, considering how knowledgeable you are on the aircraft you've fought against and those who are of our side, I'm curios if you know anything of the enemies aces? Perhaps nicked some papers of their exploits or otherwise learned anything about them?" You ask. Honestly you thought it was a bit of a stretch but she surprised you before.

"Well, I fought Wickten. I didn't down him but he seems like a good pilot. Though that's a given with how he's the third best enemy pilot in the air. He has a very aggressive approach yet a smart one that focuses on altitude. He's kind of like my opposite, what with how effectively he downs our own recon and bomber aircraft. Harthmann Von Rútlingen from what I have heard is a very skilled pilot and tactician who is extremely oriented towards the combined effort of a flight, focusing on the success of the mission rather than just the pilot. Otherwise, I don't really know much about any of the other aces. There was a bit from a paper from Lothring about Jagdgeschwader XIV "Eidgenossen" that I managed to read a bit that was mostly about their exploits, but other than that I unfortunately don't know too much of the pilots who we oppose. Though if one's downed and survives I suppose I could speak with them, once captured anyway." she says seemingly interested in the prospect of speaking to her adversaries in the air.
>>
However there was one important question you had to ask. That about the murders. You had been dragging your feet on asking for a while, but you were curios. "I have another question for you. One about something I'm sure you have heard of. The murders. What do you think of them?" You expect a quick response, and yet, Amélie simply blinks, staring at you for a bit before she speaks.

"The...murders...?" She asks out loud as if for confirmation she heard you right, after which she simply seems to ponder for a bit. "I haven't really heard anything about any murders. Maybe a rumor or two but I hardly know of anything about some sorta scary killer. This person has been caught, right? Surely, it's some scoundrel who's made a major mistake and is now safely behind bars...Right? After all, I trust the Gallonian military police to deal with such a matter swiftly! Or just the normal police if the killer isn't in Daloyaume or Lothring. Actually, tell me more about this! If they are still out and about maybe I could help a bit!" She seemed a bit confused at first before seeming very...interested. Maybe she wants to play detective of some sort?

"Well, the murders are being done by someone near the front lines, and the victims are always a man and a woman, the latter being a prostitute and from Daloyaume. The former any soldier that presumably was with them. The bodies are also always mutilated with buttons being sown into their eyes. It's...quite gruesome. Other than this, I don't know much else..." You say, hoping that Amélie won't question it.

"I see. How dreadful...I feel bad for the soldiers led astray and killed... And those desperate women too." She says as she seems to become lost in thought for a bit.

"So, why exactly do you want to help solve them anyway?" You ask, swiftly getting a response

"I believe it's quite simple. I'm a guardian angel. I save people from demise. Especially demises that are caused by another's hand. If there is anything I can do to ensure that these sorts of things don't happen again and that I could potentially save yet more lives I'll be happy to do it! After all, death only brings tragedy, and...it's kind of hard to brighten someone's day when they lost a loved one." She seemed fairly confident in herself, though she turned a bit more sad in tone at the end of what she was saying. Yet this gets you wonder if perhaps she might be too entrenched into her own view of being a hero of some sort for her own good.

"Well if you want to help I'd like to know if anyone has acted strangely of late, along with your interactions with the ground crew." you say, thought his swiftly is met with an answer, a bit quicker than expected to be honest.

"Strangely? I suppose the starlet Cal has a bit. But, she's always been quite eccentric. She's been far more boisterous than usual of late. But that might just be because she's managed to become an ace. She did seem quite in a hurry a while ago though before she left on her PR tour. As for my interactions with the ground crew, I would say quite positive! A few of them are fairly witty and fun to banter with! They kind of remind me of the Pretans in some ways. Still, I've mostly just talked to them and asked for supplies to help paint my aircraft. Well, until orders were only minor modifications were allowed. Then my hopes were a bit dashed. I kind of hoped that I would be able to have a aircraft design that stood out and was unique, like that Pretan gambler or the many, many fancy designs our Prußenmark foes have. Otherwise, I've mostly just spoken to them about the state of my aircraft and the Conley gun I have. Given how simple, reliable and useful it is I see why the Pretans like the thing so much!" Amélie says with a bit of excitement as she get's a bit off topic. Though after she asks you one thing that might be problematic. "Why do you ask this though. Do you suspect one of the ground crew or one of my fellow pilots is responsible?" Well...This is awkward.

"There are many suspects...Too many to be honest." You say with a sigh. Honestly you just wanted to clear your own pilots of such a crime, and the ground crew, but you never know. Then again, you aren't even able to talk to all the suspects among the pilots given some are away still well behind the front lines

"I see...So, who's done it is not really known...That's not good, not good at all...I would hope that they'd be caught by now." Amélie says, a hint of worry in her voice, though soon after you ask something a bit different.

"On a unrelated note that I feel is pertinent. Did you lose a loved one at all?" It was mainly to change the conversation away from the investigation. You just hope the suddenness of it didn't bother Amélie.

"I...I have. Though this is a surprising turn...I used to have a sister...An actual sister. A twin in fact...She spent a good deal of effort looking for our actual parents when we were older. She found out some things and...She vanished...I can only imagine what happened. But I suspect vile acts of criminals to be the cause of her disappearance..." She sounds almost as uncomfortable and sad as when speaking of her normal parents. It's very clear she doesn't want to go into much detail, and for now you grant her that wish.

"I understand...What exactly did you have planned for your aircraft? You mentioned a plan to decorate it." Clearly once more trying to change the conversation to something not completely depressing.

"Well, I planned on adding angel like wings and perhaps a sword or shield. Maybe both. I planned something as grand and detailed as what some of the enemies aces have, and what some Pretan pilots have. Something to inspire my fellow pilots with confidence and instill fear in our foe. Plus, I think it would be quite cool and interesting having such decorations!...But I can't do that due to the request being shot down." She seems to be a bit distracted in her thoughts after saying this, clearly not realizing the horrible pun she made before returning to her work...

Giving a nod to acknowledge what Amélie said, you continue with a fairly simple question. Whether she'll think it's about the murder or not you honestly don't care. "Can you tell me a bit more about Calantha? Considering she's not here and I presume you know a good deal about her I'd like you to tell me what you know of her."

This is met with a short bit of silence before Amélie spoke. "Well, I would say she's fairly talkative when she gets going, and she's quite an interesting person! She's quite interested in history, chemistry, mythology and a whole bunch of other things. If anything it's kind of hard to find something she isn't interested in some way or another. She also is quite fond of learning new things, and I've even taught her a little bit about painting! Though, I don't think she's too good at it just yet...Ironically when being taught things she's quite the good listener despite how talkative she is normally! But otherwise she's also quite prideful at times. I find it kind of amusing! She kind of comes across as some fancy duchess at times! Though, she get's quite annoyed when her talents are ignored or dismissed by others and acts...well...I suppose how you'd expect more negative depictions of rich people would show. I mess with her occasionally, given it's fun...The only other thing I can think of about her other than some of her more eccentric things is she's got a very thick accent. You can very easily tell she's from Lilon, or Gallonia really. Uhm...Other than that she often manages to get her hands on fancy perfumes...That's what I can think of off the top of my head about her. I hope it helps!" She naturally seemed cheerful as ever. Though that'd drop with the next question.

"Can you...tell me more about your sister then?" You say a bit softly, Amélie going a bit quiet and her mood seemingly falling a bit.

"I...I can...She was a nice person. Laëtitia was her name. She was more interested in investigation and research sorts of things. I think if given time she probably would become some sort of scientist perhaps, though she always wanted to be a detective of some kind. She was adopted with me, and is my proper sister... I don't know what happened to her exactly, but she just...vanished while looking for our parents...I miss her a lot and I wish she was still with me. She helped me a lot whenever I forgot things that were important or just in general. And she was quite supportive..." She sighs and adds "I wish I knew what happened to her...But maybe it's for the best I don't. After all, I really don't think it was a natural thing. I think it was intentional. Something or someone got rid of her for some reason...At least, that's what I fear happened. I don't think I'll ever know for sure though..." She seems to look down and stop for a while before taking a breath and regaining some of her composure before focusing on her artwork again...

After this, you simply let her work on her artwork and wait. She seems to be slow and very methodical at points, though after a bit Amélie asks "Do you simply want to watch me until I'm finished?" Which you give a nod to. With this, she seems more at ease and works quite a bit. She seems to go a fair bit faster, though still seems to be very focused on certain area's. There are plenty of times you think some part of the enemy aircraft or sky is fine and yet she adds a bit extra to make it better. Clearly, she was a bit of a perfectionist. Something very much shown in the work on the terrain on the ground, as she went so far as to ensure there was nice delicate farmland and even a well detailed no man's land in the distance. Needless to say, simply watching her is something that takes a fair few hours, especially given how she seems dedicated to making everything just perfect. Still, by the time it's finished the painting in question is very, very impressive. Though she'd spend a few minutes looking it over before saying "I believe I'll leave this here for now. I need to work on a second coat of paint perhaps but for the time being this should be good enough. I'll check on it later and finish it up then..."

"So, given you are done. Mind showing me your other work here?" You ask, taking Amélie by a bit of surprise.

"Oh! Right, I almost forgot! They were hung up where it was believed they'd be best for decorum, and where they'd be fairly safe if something happened to the air base." Amélie says before motioning you to follow. It wouldn't take long until a modest place near the mess hall had a few paintings. One was a painting of a part of Palon clearly given a certain monument in the background and in a impressionist style. Another, a more traditional classical style painting of a mechanic. There was two others however, one similar to the painting that Amélie had finished working on, one of a duel in the air. Though with no clear winner and more a raw dramatic piece. Yet, oddly, there was a fourth. One in a almost cubism like style, yet wasn't. It was of Gallonian soldiers along a road, a good few sat down resting and a few standing around. She stares at the painting a bit confused for a moment before saying "I thought only my art was supposed to be hung here?...Is there another artist among the pilots? I don't mind sharing but I would have liked to have been informed. Actually, it'd be quite nice to see more works of another artist! I suppose I'll have to ask Haydée about it later...Wait, maybe Cal actually learned a few things on her own?...But, why would it only be hung up here now?...Hmm..." She seems lost in thought for a bit before adding "I do hope you enjoy my own works though." She seems a bit hopeful thought that you'd enjoy the work.

"Personally I think the art you have made is quite good. You clearly have put in a lot of effort and there is a fair few small details that have been worked on that most others I feel would overlook. And all of this cumulates to show your dedication and care for your work. I'm no art critic, but I'm sure after the war you'd certainly be able to make a living simply painting. It's also quite good how you have a decent amount of variety." You say, clearly complimenting her well done work.

"I'm really glad to hear you enjoy it! I've worked very hard on each piece. Though, sometimes I notice small mistakes that irk me to no end given how I missed them while working on it...I've got better works done elsewhere, all be it not at this air base, but I'm glad you think these ones are of good quality!" She seemed fairly pleased, though considering the conversation was about art you decide to ask a simple, related question.

"Considering the extra piece of art here, what is your thought on avant-garde art? Your own style seems to take heavily from the last century more so than the current one, so I'm curios if you are simply more of a fan of the classics or if you are just good at making them."

"Oh, I quite like some avant-garde art...However, I must emphasize that it's only some. I think it depends heavily on the individual artists own style and interpretation of it. For example, the sort of cubist art here is personally quite good. I feel like it has it's own charm and it still shows what it needs to in a stylistic way. Others though...Well, some other works from that same genera I feel just go overboard to the point it detracts from the piece. I feel futurism is in a similar state. Expressionism meanwhile I feel is something that's quite nice most of the time. While it's a bit more rugged and rough at places, I feel that's part of it's charm. I suppose the best way to put it is I'm a fan of art that represents something clearly. I'm not too fond of a piece that can look like a dog to one person, a man falling over to another, and a horse to someone else. I like things that you can look at it in a second and understand it's a painting of a building, a city, a landscape, a person, a group of people doing something. That sort of thing. You can certainly do different things to make it unique and in a different style, like what artist behind the extra work here of some of our soldiers resting did. But once it becomes a cacophony of color it doesn't interest me. There's exceptions of course, as some people can still manage to convey something and use the style in ways I like, but I suppose you would be correct in calling me a fan of more classical and traditional art. Of course, I don't mind people doing their more unique styles, I just hope there are more future ones that are more centered around something you can imagine seeing rather than some sort of cypher in the form of a painting." She seems pleased talking about her tastes, and quite thoughtful...

With Amélie's explanation, you give a nod and say "I believe I understand where you are coming from and I believe that your view on such things is actually fairly nuanced...I suppose though we should potentially find out who painted the one piece here that isn't your own. Perhaps we should go visit Haydée and ask about it? Maybe you can find out who your fellow artist is then?"

This seems to excite Amélie a fair bit and swiftly she says "That sounds like a great idea! Let's go find her!" before walking at a fairly brisk pace ahead of you trying to find the Commandant. Of course, it takes a bit of time to actually find her, partially due to Amélie seemingly checking every place except her office, and upon actually arriving it seems that Haydée was still doing various paper work. That or she was back to doing it after a break, it had been a fair few hours since you last checked in on her after all. Still, she seemed surprised that you were back, and with Amélie.

"Lieutenant-colonel? Is something wrong or do you and Amélie simply have something to tell me?" Haydée asked, clearly a bit confused by your arrival and not having expected to see you again.

"Oh, we just wanted to ask you a question. See, you know that portion of the base that has my art? We noticed there was a new painting there and our valiant miss Valmont suggested we ask you who the new fellow artist is! I am quite excited as to learning who else likes painting after all!" Her enthusiasm and excitement were quite clear, though Haydée simply seemed confused.

"You mean to say there were more than four paintings there?" Haydée says, seemingly a bit surprised, though, this naturally confuses Amélie, and yourself a bit.

"What do you mean more than four? There should only be three paintings there if it's only my work. I don't mind sharing the spot with someone else's own art but I just wanted to know who it was." Amélie explains, her confusion quite clear.

"You...You made four paintings though. You told me you were experimenting with that new art style to try and make something you were more fond of when you showed me it...I take it you've been very busy and focused with a lot of other things if you've actually forgotten that...Or I guess you were half asleep when you worked on it. Which, I suppose makes sense given you seemed like you were up all night when you submitted it." Haydée explains, surprising Amélie a bit.

"So...I made that...I really must have been tired then..." Amélie simply mutters

"Well despite that you still made a surprisingly high quality work. Perhaps you should try experimenting with that sort of style a bit more maybe? You seem good with it." Haydée suggests before looking to you. "So, Miss Valmont. You just were curios about the extra work with her then?"

"Yes, I was the one to suggest she ask you about it. I didn't know she actually created it." You say. Curios how this happened though.

>Ask Haydée if Amélie is normally forgetful at times.
Given that Amelie is an officer, ask how proficient she is at her ground duties. Given her 35 Fatigue rating, she may just be tired.

With a bit of contemplation you think of if you should perhaps ask Amélie why she seems to go from cheerful to somber and back so quickly, but you decide against it, instead glancing to her and saying "I suppose that answers that...I believe I'll be speaking to Haydée for a bit and then talk with some of the other people here. Feel free to go back to your work or do something else."

Amélie gives a nod and says "Alrighty! I'll hopefully speak to you later! It was really nice talking with you!" after which she left you alone with Haydée.

"So...Is she normally forgetful at times?" You simply ask once Amélie had shut the door behind her.

"Kind of? She doesn't have the best long term memory. She won't forget something you just told her but occasionally it's a bit bad. Usually though at worst it's something that happened in the morning will be forgotten in the evening, more often it's something that happened a day or two ago. It's not really been a problem though. I just think it might be she has a lot on her mind and plate. I mean, she's the best pilot of our escadron, and only l'As rivals her in our own forces...It doesn't help she's often up later than she should be at times working on her art or other things." Haydée says. Though you swiftly ask another simple question.

"How proficient is she at her duties on the ground. She is an officer after all." You are fairly swift to ask, though this gets some surprise from Haydée.

"I mean...She doesn't have many. The ground crew take care of the aircraft and she helps a bit with maintenance like everyone else. She doesn't have much paperwork outside of debrief and there's a reason she has enough free time to paint a fair bit. Really, the main thing we do is fly. Of course, I have a lot of duties in the management of the escadron given how I'm it's commanding officer but she's surprisingly low in rank for all she's done. Really if it wasn't for her being pulled up to the air so often due to her skill and just about every flight leader wanting her with them she'd probably have a lot more paintings done. And to be honest, I think the only reason every pilot has at least a non commissioned officer rank is because it's seen as something befitting of gentlemen and ladies rather than the average soldier. We are sort of knights of the sky after all...Doesn't stop people who likely wouldn't be considered either in. I'd say Catherine is a perfect example of that but she's just a major..." Haydée says a bit casually.

"I see, thank you. I hope I didn't disrupt your work too much." You say fairly respectfully, planning to leave soon after.
>>
"No, you didn't. It's fine. Though while you are here I have a request. I'd appreciate if Catherine got a promotion in the near future, if you could arrange that. I know it's a bit out of left field but I'm a bit tired of having to explain to the Pretans I occasionally deal with that she isn't the leader of Rouge, I am, and that a Major in our forces is equal to their Flight Sergeants, not a Commandant. Given how things have been going I'd rather not be redeployed next to a Pretan airfield and have to deal with their attempts of cooperation resulting in a bureaucratic mess." Haydée says with a bit of exasperation.

After this, you search for Calantha's crew chief, given they were the closest thing to her you could talk to with Calantha off on her PR tour still. It takes a bit but you find them in a hanger. They seem a mildly surprised yet unfazed about your arrival.

"Hey, whatchya want officer ma'am? You with logi or some arty liaison? Haydée's in the main building o'er there if ya want to chat with her." they say incredibly casually as they give a slight salute.

"I've already spoken with Haydée. Further, I'm Valmont. Helene Valmont...Not some sort of liaison." You say a bit tired.

"Ah, so ya 'ave come to visit the escadron under ya eh? Well, whadaya need from me?" she asks as you honestly wonder what's with her strange manner of speaking that you really can't put your finger on where it's from.

"You are the crew chief for Desjardins, yes?" You ask hoping that this won't be like pulling teeth as you fear it might become.

"Desjardins? Ya mean Calantha?" They ask as you are able to tell fully they are well aware who you mean...

"Yes...I mean Calantha." You say, thinking about some of the things Roselyne said about the ground crew the more this conversation goes on.

"Alright. Whadaya want to know? Got anything in particular or ya just want general stuff? Can't tell ya much of 'er if you don't tell me whatchya want to know...Unless ya want to sit 'ere for the next five 'ours as I go off." They say calmly and casually with a slight smile.

A Surface Navy guy once wrote that he understood how Aviators earned their flight pay, but he did not know how they earned their base pay. Joking aside, I expected Amelie to at least be on the Squadron Duty Officer rotation, but I suppose the queep only really starts at the Department Head level.

"I want to know about Calantha. Firstly, what is she like? In your own words?" You ask fairly directly in the hopes for a answer just as clear.

"She's a yapper. Talks a lot. Full of 'erself too. Bit of a show off, extravagant, and a bit snobbish. Yet, not terrible. Kinda hard to explain. She's surprisin'ly open too. She ain't keen on people ignorin her. Also is interested in a lotta stuff. Strangely good at actually listening between 'er chatter...Not much else to really say. Ya'd think she'd be some sorta author, artist or maybe one o' 'em fancy pictures or theater stars...Guess it fits though given what the Prens call their aces. Star turn pilots. Also 'as an accent thick as molasses...Don't believe she's too fond of me though, but I don't care. After all, ain't nothing new. Sometimes I wish I was like 'em other mechanics who 'ave a few pilots who like 'em and a few who 'ate em. But ya ain't chattin to me about that." She says fairly casually, though you swear her accent is getting worse...You wonder if she's putting it on purpose or if she normally sounds like this.

"Have you seen Calantha do anything strange?" You honestly don't expect much of an answer, but you would get one at least.

"Yep. Lotsa stuff. Bit of an investigator kinda. 'Least I think she did a few things like that. Though, could just be a tad nosey. Or I'm misunderstandin things. Curios I guess could be a way o' describin 'er. 'ardly know 'ow else to explain it." It was in fact an answer, even if not the best.

"...Right...Where are you from exactly?" You ask, mainly because of her very distracting accent.

"A small farm not far from Kartiia's border." She says swiftly and without elaboration much to your chagrin given it hardly explains anything.

"I've met a fair few people from there but they don't exactly share your...accent." You simply say.

"No one does." She flatly replies. You can't help but feel at least a bit annoyed at the fact she wouldn't go into more detail. Then again, she's probably explained it enough for her to give up.

"Do you know of anything about missing tools or parts?" You ask, deciding to give up on trying to discern her location from for the time being.

"Yep. Bit annoyin'. Not sure if it's just the logi boys fuckin' up or someone misplacin' the damned things. Then again, few screwdrivers keep missin, and then there's the canvas. Can guess who nicks the latter. Haven't a clue 'bout the former. Few other things as well seem to vanish, though I'd not be surprised if that was just 'cause they were used up so quickly." She states with a bit of apathy really.

"I take it the canvas is taken by Amélie for her painting." You simply state hoping she'd answer you with a clear answer.

"Nope. I think it's Haydée. Wouldn't be surprised if she gave it to 'er though." She says seemingly half paying attention as she starts checking a nearby crate of materials.
>>
"Interesting...How have you and the other ground crew held up during the high tempo of the operations over Lothring?" You were curios if they were doing fine, or at least saw themselves as doing fine. Along with if they were tired.

"Nuffin too 'ard. Quite easy 'onestly. 'Least for me anyway. Not sure 'bout the others too much, but they did alright. Not great, not terrible. Acceptable. Ya know how it is, 'least I hope so anyway." She states. You get the feeling she's not going to be as detailed as you hoped. Perhaps another engineer would be better to speak to about that sort of thing.

"Right...Anything you think you need? Perhaps more cloth or wood?" You ask hoping to get a good answer.

"A drin-" she manages to get out before you let out a disappointed sigh.

"Other than alcohol..." You say with clear annoyance and dissapointment

"A raise then. And a promotion." She states, much to your disappointment.

"Okay...What physical goods do you need that are important to allowing you to do your job effectively." You ask one more time a bit more sternly.

"Jus' told ya, didn't I?" She says as you give a unamused glare. "Guess more cloth 'n lumber. Bit more guns too. Better pilots who won't damage the things as well would be nice." Well, at least it's something...

Back to the war, unless anyone else has an idea. I am tempted to ask about the timing of the missing screwdrivers, but discipline seems a little lax here. . .

Speak to Gaspard

Supporting. I'm curious and we can be brief if there's nothing that sticks out.

After hearing the mechanic you decide you have had enough, and given what Roselyne said before, you really, really do not want to deal with another mechanic for fear they'd manage to be worse. Still, you swiftly say "That is all, I'll be going now." And walk fairly briskly away, though you can't help but catch a slight smile come from the mechanic as you do so. A part of you wonders if that was all an act just so you'd leave them alone. Though you decide that it's not worth thinking about for too much. Clearly the discipline of the ground crew was lacking to say the least. But regardless of that, so long as they did their job competently and didn't cause too many problems it should be fine...Fine enough anyway.

After this, you decide that it's best to go back to base and maybe speak with Gaspard again upon your return. You aren't sure what you should ask him, but after you could get back to business in winning the war. Though before you go, you would try and have a short meeting with the other pilots you run into on the way for morale purposes, if only to be courteous. It'd be bad if some jealousy sprung up because you just talked to the aces, one mechanic and no one else, though you keep these conversations fairly brief. After, you make your leave and get on a train back to HQ. The trip is fairly uneventful, but you can't help but think about things. If the killer is in Rogue, who is it? You hope that this all is just getting worked up all over nothing and the murderer is actually in the 1st Vesperia Division or logistic teams rather than the air corps. But it still gnaws at you. Had you missed something? Not asked something you should have? Or maybe this was all a fools errand thinking you could play detective...Then again, who could it be and why?...It's something that you keep in your mind. Though, maybe expressing some thoughts would be useful. You did plan to talk to Gaspard Botrel once you got back...Maybe you can throw some idea's at him...Be it of which of your pilots, or if it even was a pilot...

(Pick one)
>You believe the murderer is a part of Rouge (If you pick this, add if you think it's a pilot or maintenance crew, and who specifically if you have anything more solid in mind.)
>You believe the murderer is part of Logistics.
>You believe the murderer is a part of the 1st Vesperia Division.
>You believe the murderer is someone else unrelated. (Write in)

Still, despite it all, and all the thoughts and various ponderings that happened, you cannot help but feel you don't have all the information you'd like to have for one reason or another. Though this begs the question, was that deliberate? Were you fed misinformation by someone, or kept in the dark about a few things? It would make sense, after all image is something focused upon over actual results given what happened to a certain officer some years ago that became a national scandal. Still, these thoughts get you wondering. Botrel told you about how Guilloux isn't Guilloux...That her name was just an alias and she wasn't even born here...If that was ordered to be buried, what else was? Will they try finding some random person to take the fall for these murders instead of the actual culprit? If it was someone important it'd certainly be a possibility. Though taht begs another question, is the list of suspects currently available to you even the right one?...Perhaps your efforts to actually try and find out for yourself are actually meaningful in some way or another. Still, it's quite a bit to think about...Eventually, as the night falls, you arrive back at your HQ and start looking for Gaspard. The first place you check is his office, and low and behold it was a good thing to look there as he was busy at work, looking up from his papers and saying "Oh, I take it you are back from meeting the Pilots of Rogue. How was the short trip near the front?"

"It was fine, I spoke to quite a few, but I wanted to talk to you about a few things first before returning to my duties..." You say before pausing. What you ask or say to him next will perhaps be of vital importance. Perhaps something quite key and pivotal. Or it could be nothing if not well constructed...

>Write in what you wish to ask, tell, and say to him. Both a rough outline or detailed description are fine.

(Sorry about the delay. Though, once we get back to the 'war' part I think I'll end the thread there and take a break. Then again I sort of already have given how long it took to get this out.)

Any other weirdness we should know of? Tell him to report any unusual absences to us.

Will need to think about this one. Could we feed him some crumbs for our conversations and see how he reacts.

Maintenance crew.

Suggest tighter inventory control?

Should note, my plan is once the thread falls off and is archived I'll do the results of your actions. If you haven't decided by then I'll try and work with what makes the most sense.

Also surprised how diverse your thoughts are on who did it. I'm not sure if that means I did a good or bad job on this little mystery...Suppose it at least means I certainly didn't make it obvious.
