North Falls Sheriff's Department. Now.
-----

The pouring rain was pounding on the old brownstone like waves on a shipwreck; the lamp out front dancing in the wind-- its beam erratic, like a broken lighthouse.

Inside, Megan was out cold on her desk, drooling over some polaroids, with her golden ponytail covering her eyes; a half-empty bottle of Jack by her side, and a tear-smudged letter still in her hand, as South Lake's KPUT played some schmaltzy country tune on the radio.

*BRRRING!*

*BRRRRING!*

"Wuh...?!" Megan jerked awake. "Recess over, already...?"

She looked from her reflection in the window to the phone and back again, wiping the drool off her face as reality kicked in.

*BRRRRING!*

"Crap..."

She reached for the receiver, which momentarily slipped away and did a little twirl in the air before landing in her hand.

"Forth Nalls Sheriff's Department-- Dep-- *cough* Deputy Scott, speaking."

*"You been drinking again, rookie?"*

"Sheriff Campbell! I--" she mechanically stood up and tucked in her shirt.

*"Did you at least remember to pack the flag?"*

"Um..." Megan looked out the window just in time to see a lightning strike the flagpole, before whatever was left of the Old Glory flew past her and vanished into the storm. "Sir, I--"

*"My flag's gone, isn't it?"*

"..."

*"Look, Megan... I'm saying this as a friend..."*

"..."

*"Sweetheart, you gotta get your shit together... pardon my French. It's been two months-- You have to move on. What are you, twenty-five?"*

"Twenty-four this February, sir."

*"Do you have any idea what I'd give to be twenty-four again?"*

"..."

*"So, this guy doesn't need you. Big whoop! You know who does? Your folks need you, the community needs you-- Hell, I need you."*

"Thank you, sir..."

*"Don't mention it. Not gonna dock your pay for the flag either, 'cause I'm a great guy like that, but I do expect one of those delicious apple pies of yours on my desk, Monday. Swear to God, closest thing to crack that I'm ever gonna try."*

"Heh, yessir."

*"You smilin', rookie?"*

"A little..."

*"Attagirl. Now, focus, 'cause I need you to do something for me."*

"Shoot, sir."

*"Been trying to contact the kids at Amber's for a while now, but it looks like the lines are fried-- I want you to drop by, make sure everything's all right."*

"Sure thing, sir."

*"Oh, almost forgot-- Please stop by the house and let Sarge in the garage on your way to the Mayor's. Pretty sure he's still in his dog house-- Poor fella must be freaking out."*

"Got it."

*"And Megan...?"*

"Sir?"

*"Chin up. It gets better."*

"Yessir..."

*Clack!*

Megan walked over to the bathroom and splashed some water on her face.

"Why not me...?" she mumbled to herself; sad, big blue eyes staring back at her in the mirror.

She went back to her desk and tossed the polaroids and the letter in the trash, before picking them up out of the trashcan right after, and stuffing them at the bottom drawer instead, after a swift change of heart; a bittersweet smile on her face. She put on her jacket, grabbed her 8-inch Colt Python, and popped out the cylinder to make sure it was loaded.

"Okay, we're good." she slapped the cylinder shut and raised the revolver to her face, "Fingers crossed, I don't have to use you..." her breath steaming up the nickel finish.

"Game time..." she holstered her hand cannon and let out a heavy sigh.

Moments later, Megan was hopping down the stairs on her way to the garage; her ponytail dancing as she went.

Back on her desk, a box of .357 Magnum ammo was still waiting for someone to pick it up. Or was it a flare gun? No, wait-- Was it a radio? Maybe it was a medi kit... Fuck. I can't remember, dammit...

Welcome back, I wish you good health op

>Radio

Ammo is necessary

Nedi kit is also needed for injuries

That leaves radio and flare gun

We are in a storm so given horror tropes the radio will be wonky

So flare gun it is

Hughes Mansion. Now.
-----

Time stood still. The killer's laughter gave way to heavy, distorted breathing as he sized up his prey, looking from one kid to the next; his antlers casting an ominous shadow on the wall, his axe lodged in the hardwood floor.

Stephanie's gaze was fixed on Tiffany's corpse, now lying on the floor with her limbs at impossible angles; her right arm extended, as if she was trying to reach for her glasses...

The Sheriff's daughter swallowed and took a deep breath. Warm blood and jasmine wasn't exactly the best combination of smells, but her brain needed the oxygen. There was a single thought on her mind.

"Miles..." she turned to look toward the living room.

The killer reached for his axe.

"Steph, run!" Norman yelled.

"But--"

"RUN! I've got Miles-- Go warn the others!"

Stephanie wouldn't have to be told a third time. She gave Norman a nod, grabbed a frozen Priscilla, and started running up the stairs, as the Linebacker made a beeline to the living room to retrieve her wounded fiancé.

"LeAvinG so SooN?" the killer rested his axe on his shoulder and picked up Tiffany's dead body. "DoN't yOu wAnNa sAy Hi to yOuR fRieNd?" he held her by the neck and bobbed her head back and forth like a ventriloquist's dummy. "HeY, StEph! LoOk! No gUts! HaR-hAr-HaR-hAr-HaAaR!"

Stephanie didn't look back.

"Please tell me you're not stoned." she turned to a distraught Priscilla, as the both of them climbed up the steps two at a time; each one gripping the other's hand like their lives depended on it.

"Well, not anymore!" Priscilla blurted, gesturing toward the foyer; her eyes wide with horror.

"Good. Come on, we gotta hurry."

Amber's bedroom.
-----

Derek was lying on the king-size bed with a goofy smile on his face, surrounded by a sea of pillows and teddy bears; one hand behind his head and the other one stuffed down his jeans.

Amber was dancing at the far side of the room, doing a naughty little cheer number designed especially for her boyfriend; jumping and bending and jiggling all over the place.

"Whoa, babe-- I don't know what you did, but your tits look extra stupendous tonight!"

He wasn't wrong. Amber's top was so tight, so stretched, struggling to contain her full D cups, that you could barely make out the NFHS logo embroidered on the front; its seams moaning in protest. She always strategically ordered her cheerleading uniforms one size too small, but tonight was something else.

"You're not stuffing, are you...?"

"No, silly-- I'm on the pill! The box, like, mentioned 'some swelling might occur' or some junk." Amber chuckled, delighted at her beau's reaction.

She took off her top with some effort, twirled it around her finger and tossed it at him; her pink lace bra overflowing with boob flesh.

"Wanna, like, get a closer look...?" she arched her back; a mischievous grin on her face.

*SNAP!*
>>
The clasp couldn't take any more abuse. Amber's breasts jiggled forth to sweet freedom.

"Like, oops!" she placed a hand on her mouth in mock shame, before cupping her boobs to hold her bra in place as she strolled over to Derek.

"Wait, what...? The pill?" the boy said, pulling his hand out of his jeans and sitting upright. "But babe, I thought we said we'd try to... you know." he gestured toward her belly; a disappointed look in his eyes.

"Omigod, like, not this again!"

"But, you agreed. You said you wanted to start a fa--"

"I know what I said, okay? I, like, changed my mind."

"Babe..."

"Like, don't 'babe' me. How is this gonna work, exactly? You're gonna be, like, all the way out in New Jersey, partying with your buddy and your brainy college whores, and I'm gonna be here, all fat and bloated, doing what? Like, waiting by the phone?!"

"Amber, we've been over this." the boy got up. "We've been together since middle school. I love you, you know I do." he walked over to her and grabbed her by the shoulders. "I'm gonna find a way to make this work, I promise."

"Ugh, I don't wanna talk about it. Way to, like, ruin the mood." she jerked herself away from him, turned off the music, and walked over to her closet, clasping her bra and throwing on an oversized school sweater.

"Babe, come on, I thought we were on the same page, here!"

"I said, like, leave it alone."

"Amber, did something happen?"

"Don't push me, Derek."

"Hey, don't walk away from me!" he grabbed her by the elbow and forced her around to face him.

"Ow!"

"This is some bullshit, you know that? I've always been honest with you. Always! Never lied to you once. But every time something gets you all worked up, you just close up and shut me out. Every single time, like clockwork. And now here we are, trying to plan our future-- a future I thought you wanted to be a part of--"

"I CAN'T HAVE KIDS, OKAY?!" she shot back.

"What..."

"My mom took me to the doctor... My tubes are all, like, messed up and junk. There. Like, happy? So, what now? Gonna take me back to the store and exchange me for, like, a model with a working oven?" Amber said; her eyes welling up.

"Aww, babe..." he hugged her tight. "I'm sorry-- I'm so sorry. Don't worry, I'm never letting you go. We're gonna get through this together." he kissed her. "But wait... If you can't-- you know-- then why are you on contraceptives?"

"Um... Priscilla told me they, like, make your boobs bigger, and I know how much you love boobs, babe." she blushed.

"I don't deserve you." Derek smiled.

Audrey had just unbuttoned Spencer's pants, and was about to swallow a few inches of nerd, when suddenly the boy started convulsing.

"Calm down, cutie. I haven't even started yet. Glad to see I got you all excited, though."

"Too excited! I'm *cough* having *wheeze* an asthma attack!"

"What?!"

"I was *cough* afraid this would happen! Quick! My-- *wheeze* my inhaler!"

"Oh God, oh God, oh God! Where is it?!"

"My *cough* backpack!"

"Where the fuck is your backpack, Spencer?!"

"Derek's *wheeze* truck!"

"Fuck me sideways... Stay put. I'll be back in a bit."

"Please *cough* hurry!"
-----

Downstairs, the killer walked over to the now empty living room, taking a look around; his gaze stopping at the Hughes' family portrait. He got closer, and placed a hand on Amber's face. He stood there for a while, his head tilted to the side, as his hand slid down the glass. He shook his head and made a fist.

*CRASH!*

He punched the picture and jerked his bloodied hand to get rid of the shards.

"LeT's hAve sOmE fUn..."

The man started making his way to the basement...

Megan was cruising down an empty Main Street on her way to the Campbells', lost in her thoughts, with KPUT's country schmaltzfest still going strong in the background, and the pitter-patter of the rain on the roof keeping her company; the once bright spark in her eyes gone, as if someone had stolen a piece of her soul.

*HONK-HOOONK!*

The Sherriff's deputy jerked back to reality and made a sharp right as a pair of headlights stared straight at her, narrowly avoiding Buck's truck as she guided her patrol car back into the right lane; her hands a pale white blur on the wheel.

"My bad, Mr. Hodder! Uh, drive safe!" she waved at the angry old man driving past her, flashing him an awkward smile.

"Jesus..." she ran a sweaty palm over her face. "Right... Better stop feeling sorry for yourself, there, Scott... It's getting dangerous." she reached over to the radio and turned the dial, with the needle resting on KLLR, only to be met with the always unpleasant sound of static.

*KSHHHHHHHT*

"Weird... Walter's never let KLLR go down once-- Dude even made it through the Columbus Day storm of '62 without a hitch. Huh..."

She rounded the corner to Williamson Drive, and slowed down before parking on the Campbells' driveway.

"Woof! Woof!" Sarge exclaimed the second Megan went through the gate, hopping up and down in his dog house and tugging at this chain, as if to say: "Finally! Get that thing off of me! It smells like wet dog in here, for crying out loud!"

"Hey, Sarge." Megan patted him on the head as she unhooked the chain from his bright red collar. "Come on, buddy. Let's get you inside." she walked over to the garage and was about to lift the door, but the big white retriever had other plans.

"Bark! Bark!" Sarge yelled as he strolled down the driveway, as if to say: "Nuh-uh! I don't know where you're going, but I'm coming with you! I mean, just look at you! You could use all the help you can get!"

"Sarge, come on, man! I gotta drive up to the Mayor's and the Sherriff said--"

"Grrr!" Sarge growled, baring his teeth, as if to say: "You giving me lip, rookie?!"

"Okay, okay! Whatever..." she raised her hands in the air. "Just be careful not to get any mud on the--"

"Arf! Arf!" the dog smiled and wagged his tail at her, as if to say: "Shotgun!", before jumping into the car through the open driver's seat door and getting comfy on the passenger's seat; a battlefield of muddy paw prints, stains, twigs and patches of wet grass adorning Megan's formerly pristine cabin.

"...seats." Megan sighed. She wiped her seat with her jacket sleeve and got inside, before shutting the door and turning the keys in the ignition; big bright headlights illuminating the Campbells' empty residence, as a fat possum with a chipped tooth and mangled ears peeked out the doggy door at he bottom of the garage door to see what was going on.
>>
Megan glanced at her watch. "Crap... I'm already late." she tapped an index finger on her chin. "Should I maybe take the shortcut...?"

"Bork! Bork!" Sarge yelped, as if to say: "Hey, do you have any snacks?! Why does your breath smell like happy juice?! Are we there yet?!"

Stephanie and Priscilla paused at the top of the stairs for a second, to catch their breath, making sure nobody was following them before staring down the long hallway ahead of them. There were numerous doors on either side, and the bay window at the end cast long shadows down the grimy carpet every now and then, as lightning tore the skies apart outside; moths flying around the peeling fleur-de-lis wallpaper, and the lamp sitting on the small table about halfway through, inching closer to the edge with every thunder.

"So *huff* what now?" Priscilla asked; hands on her knees.

"I'm gonna go get Mikey." Stephanie turned her toothbrush a couple times to tighten her bun. "You should go look for Audrey and Spencer."

"What about Amber and Derek?"

"Amber's like Spider-Man with boobs-- She could easily cheer her way out of a tight spot. Derek, um... Derek's a dude. He can handle himself, right?"

"So is Spencer."

"Barely..."

"Good point."

"Okay, go. We meet back here in five."
-----

The basement door creaked open, and the horned visitor began his descent down into the bowels of the mansion; the termite-ridden old staircase moaning with each step, his axe dripping innocent blood.

The man reached the bottom of the stairs and just stood there for a moment.

"Come on, doofus! They're, like, never gonna find us down here!" a thirteen-year-old Amber in a flowered summer dress called at him; her eyes sparkling, her mouth full of braces.

"RrrRrAaaAaagGggHh!" he swung his axe around. "LeAve mE alOne!"

Little Amber vanished in a cloud of smoke as the blade went right through her; her warm laughter still echoing all around the musty basement.

The man shook his head.

"RiGht... If mEmoRy sErvEs, tHe bReAker bOx mUst bE riiiGht..."

He kicked the giant freezer to the side and lifted the old tarp behind it with a swift motion, using the hilt of his axe.

"...hEre!"
-----

Stephanie was about to place her hand on the doorknob, when Mikey's bedroom door opened.

"Aaaah!" startled, the boy yelled, stumbled backwards and fell on his butt; his toy blaster escaping his grip.

"Mikey!"

"Thteph! What happened?! Why are you all..." he didn't finish his sentence, he just sat there, shaking, motioning toward the bloodstains all over Stephanie's face and hoodie.

"No-no-no, it's ok! I'm fine, I swear!" Stephanie helped him up, handed him his blaster, and made a beeline to the boy's desk. She picked up the school backpack off his chair and peeked inside. There was a pack of Milk Duds and a small water bottle resting among the books and notepads.

"That'll have to do..." she mumbled to herself.

"Thteph, you're thcaring me... What'th going on...?"

How could she even begin to answer that? She strapped the backpack onto the boy's back, and kneeled down in front of him.

"Okay, little dude... I need you to do me a favor." she grabbed him by the shoulders, doing her best not to stutter.

"Thteph..."
>>
"I need you to go hide in the attic, and wait there until I come pick you up. Do you understand?"

"But, why d--"

"That's how you get your star, little dude-- Do you want your star?"

"Yeah..."

"Good. Come on, let's go." she ruffled his hair and grabbed him by the hand.

The both of them walked out of the room and back to the hallway. Stephanie looked up; the trapdoor to the attic was straight up above her, right outside Mikey's bedroom.

She jumped up and reached for the string dangling from the ceiling.

"Thteph, wait!" the boy tugged at her sleeve. "The mechanithm ith broken. If you pull that, the ladder'th gonna hit you in the fathe. We have to uthe the thtairth."

"Where are the stairs to the attic, Mikey?"

"Down the hallway to the left."

They ran down the hallway and turned left at the bay window, before climbing up the stairs to find an old red door; half-open, as if it was waiting for them.

"Thteph, it'th too dark..."

Stephanie unscrewed the laser sight from the boy's blaster, to reveal a pretty bright bulb hiding behind it.

"There." she pushed him inside and closed the door behind him.

"Lock the door, Mikey."

*Click!*

"Stay put no matter what you hear, and don't open to anyone, okay? Can you do that for me?"

"Okay..."

"I'll come get you when it's sa-- I'll come back for you, okay? I promise..."
-----

Priscilla picked the lock to Mayor Hughes' study. The room was empty.

"Where the hell are you, guys...?" she mumbled to herself.

There was a polished, 12 gauge Remington 870 Wingmaster resting on some hooks on the wall at the far side of the room; probably the most well-preserved thing in the house.

"That thing looks unwieldy..." she looked around some more, her gaze landing on a ceremonial Officer's dagger in a display case on the big mahogany desk, from back in Maddox's West Point days.

"Don't mind if I do..."

*CRASH!*

Priscilla broke the case and picked up the dagger off the blue velvet pillow, before exiting the room.

She was sprinting down the hallway when she noticed something... There was a baby blue piece of fabric with a hot pink streak running down the side, wedged between what looked like a crack on the wall.

"What the..."

Priscilla gave the wall a light push, before it gave way with a subtle click to reveal the staircase behind it as the patch of tracksuit fell to the floor; she was well aware that this was the secret passage leading down to the pantry.

"This motherfucker's been here before-- he knows the house...!" she picked up the piece of tracksuit and tried the next room over.

"Locked again! I'm gonna run out of hairpins, dammit!"

She forced the door open once more, and found herself in the game room. There was a small bar to the right, a pool table in the middle, and a movie projector at the far side, but no Audrey or Spencer.

"Fuck..."

Priscilla kept searching.

The Hughes' master bedroom and maser bathroom were unlocked, but there was nobody in there, either.

"Last chance..."
>>
She made a right at the bay window at the end of the hallway, on her way to the library...

*THUD!*

"AAAH!"

"EEEK!"

"Pudge?!"

"PJ?!"

"Thank fuck, I've been looking all over for you, guys! Where's Lurch?"

"He's in the library, having an asthma attack! Outta the way, quick! I gotta go get his in--urk!"

"You're not going anywhere." Priscilla held Audrey back by the collar.

"What the fuck, Priscilla?! You trying to kill me?!" Audrey protested, rubbing her throat.

"There's some maniac with an axe downstairs."

"Oh, fuck off. Like I'm gonna fall for th--"

*SLAP!*

"Listen to me! He killed Tiffany and chopped off Miles' leg!"

"What...?!" Audrey asked, now rubbing the red handprint on her cheek.

"I'm not screwing with you, honest! Norman's trying to find a safe place to hide Miles, and Steph and I ran upstairs to warn you guys!"

"Did you call the--"

"Phone's dead." Priscilla started rolling a joint.

"This really a good time for--"

"Oh, shut up. It's for Spencer. It's good for the broncho... uh, somethings. Come on."
-----

When Priscilla rounded the corner back from the library with Audrey and a slightly loopy Spencer, Stephanie was already waiting down the hallway.

"Catch!" Priscilla said, tossing the dagger Stephanie's way. "Found it in the Mayor's study. There's a shotgun, too."

"I'll keep that in mind." Stephanie caught the dagger in mid-air and stuffed it down her ankle.

"Oooh, ketchup!" Spencer reached for Stephanie's face.

"No." Audrey lowered his hand.

"Mikey?" Priscilla asked.

"Locked up in the attic." Stephanie rubbed her temples.

"There's something else..." Priscilla started. "That guy-- It's someone we know."

"Yeah, I figured." Stephanie said.

"No, you don't understand." Priscilla pulled the piece of tracksuit out of her pocket. "I found this in one of the secret passages."

*BZZZT!*

Suddenly, the mansion went dark.
