You gently set down the Giga Cutter, acknowledging that maybe spraying burning fuel everywhere isn't conducive to your continued survival. You creep forward, only to find out that, unfortunately "gently" and "Giga Cutter" don't mix, and it heard you.

Your first swing it dodges deftly, but it sakes your second and third to the gut and shoulder respectively, before it swings its flamethrower to bear and blasts you point-blank. Thankfully, because you're unmodified, you get away rare rather than well-done.

You dart forward with your knife, hoping to finish the fanatical flash frying floor cleaner in a single strike, before being deftly dodged by the dastardly drone. Then you miss as you go back around for another swing, twice. It dodged a bit too far for you to hit it.

It levels its flamethrower for a jet of... flame... it fires too early, blasting into empty air.

After patching up not just yourself, but your clothes, you set out, onward and downward.

However, soon enough you note something interesting: The statues at the side of the wall look different, more detailed. You take a closer look and sure enough; the statues are more finely carved. Where previously they were only human-shaped, devoid of detail with a rough, seemingly unworked finish, they're gaining progressively more detail as you move deeper. First you seem them with faces carved into their craggy heads. Next, their bodies begin showing more detail, chiseled physiques lovingly worked into the stone. Then, the surface of their stony hides are smoothed, with a level of care you've only seen at museums. The detail only increases as you go deeper, different expressions, different bodies, different poses, with only one commonality: Each holds a glowing orb, and the hand that does is uncarved, a large, ungainly mitt. There are even smaller statues interspered throughout, each in some position of care. You can swear you see them look at you as you pass.

Next, you see something unsettling. The walls (now showing signs of work too, carvings. Angels and demons, man and monster alike,) are covered in dried blood, and you keep seeing small scraps of metal from the corner of your eye. Not parts, but broken pieces too small to be made use of. Half a screw, or a third of a bolt.

Finally, you come to a grand pair of doors, the wall above carved in bas-relief form, a massive scene of an armored angel embracing a skeleton, painted in red. Curiously, the skeleton only has one arm.

You knock on the door. No need to be rude, after all.

"Hmmm... come in, traveler. It has been a long while since I've had company," says a voice, rumbling like stone.

You enter. Before you sits, hunched over... something, a towering skeletal titan, no less than 15 ft tall. Likely taller, although his posture makes it hard to tell. He wears a piece of cloth, perhaps a cloak or robe clearly meant for a much smaller man, tied around one of his ribs, near where his heart would be. Notably, he only has one arm.

After you're done looking at the elephant in the room, you notice the piles of broken machinery and shattered metal, the various incomplete statues, and workbenches scattered about the room, as well as a few doors, presumably leading to other rooms in this... house?

As his gaze alights on you, the skeleton seems to frown, as much as a skeleton can frown.

"I have met your like before. Speak, machine, and tell me why I shouldn't remove you from this temple."

>Speak (what?)

>"I'm guessing you met bloodstarved war machines? I don't really have any interest in killing someone that wishes me no harm."

"Haaah, it seems the machine can speak. Tell me, machine, for what purpose do you wish to enter the Hell beyond?" The giant gestures behind himself with his one arm towards a door, holding what looks to be a chisel. Around him, you note, are various makeshift implements: Files, rasps, picks, and other various tools. Above the door, there are two oars, one intricately decorated and comically small for a man of his stature, and one that is well worn, and MUCH larger.

>"I'm looking for two humans, Antonio and his nephew Salvatore. They were my friends, and I want to try to protect them in death when I failed to while they lived. Do you know if their souls passed through here?"

"Hmm... A worthy purpose. They have not passed through here. This is a path for the living... a man sought to retrieve his wife from Hell, and sang words so sweet the earth itself opened before him. He could have left, but he looked back at the precipice of escape, and his wife was dragged back for his doubt. The fool joined her soon after, when he drank himself to death."

"What would you do when you find them? Follow in his footsteps and try to leave Hell?"

>"Settle down in a place where I can open a restaurant. I'm a cook, and there's no one else to eat my pizzas on Earth anymore."

"HAH! A fine prospect, if not for the day that Heaven looks down. Come now, Machine, have you any pay for the Ferryman?"

"Hooooh... Never had a 'pizza' before. Never even heard of one. Make me one, then."

And so you make one. You set up your stove, toss your dough, prepare your ingredients, and then bake it.

It's not a great pizza by any means (you'd need an oven and actual ingredients for that), but it's still a pizza. For him, it's no more than a single bite.

"Hah! Best meal I've had since I've died! Come, Machine, let me bring you to hell."

You go through the door you noticed behind him, and he grabs the larger oar above the door and rests it over his shoulder before pushing the heavy door open with his hip.

It's a rather large boat, for a rather large man, but simple. The only thing complex about it is a small outboard engine on the back, which looks rather out of place on the almost barge-like boat.

"This river leads to and borders Limbo, the first layer, where the simple folk who lived well yet could not enter Heaven reside, but should you wish I can take you to Lust, the second layer. It's where this portion of the tunnel was meant to lead originally."

>Limbo. It's where you're most likely to find Salvatore, in your mind, and there's very little Antonio would stop at to find his nephew, so there's a chance that he's there too.
>Lust. Antonio had a new girl coming into the shop for you to play wingman every week. Assuming that his mobility is limited, in some way, this is most likely where he is, and Salvatore quite likely went after him.

"Hmmm. You're burning with questions, I can tell. What are they?"
>What are your questions anons? Both for this giant husk and for me, the QM.

"He was... inspired, perhaps divinely. There are your fellow Machines, bloodthirsty and amoral. Husks of the dead, souls in newfound flesh, usually too weak to think. Those that do are very dangerous, with all the mind of a man and the strength of a demon. Demons are what's left of Fallen Angels, their gory remains congealed into a hellish mass, trying to remember their form and mind, now lost. Their skins are as stone, and their mastery of the divine power gifted unto them twisted. Should you meet an angel in this place, tread carefully, for they hold power unending or are on a mission from Heaven."

"Aye, I was a man once. My hate killed me when it surpassed my devotion, but it is the way of God to give a second chance..."

"It is simple. Between each layer, there is a cliff. One may climb down, or take the proper path down. Man made an alternate path, elevators. they work no longer. The more terrible the sin, the worse the punishment, the worse the environs, and the deeper the layer. To go past Limbo, you must pass through the court of Minos, to pass beyond Wrath you must enter Dis, and every circle thereafter has a guardian. Limbo is a kind place, and I hope you can find your friends there. Just keep in mind that to speak and show kindness in this place may be folly, but it is by that 'folly' that many reside in Limbo, rather than deeper places.

... And though this is but a legend, it is said that the only way out of hell is to meet the devil himself."

"Ahhhh... That is Gabriel, the only angel to still visit Hell nowadays. He saved me from a false servant, who sought to steal my shroud, and stole my arm. A pity, I was looking forward to having two again. The murals are my work. Something to do with my hand, to keep busy."

"A prospective ferryman, one who wished to take without serving."
"No. They are my work, much as your pizza is yours. I could not bear to leave them." (2-4)
"I suggest you tread carefully, Machine. Many remember dying by your kind's hands. Were you human, I would suggest training yourself in both skill and body. I do not know how that would help a Machine, for I am unfamiliar with the particulars of your kind. I would also suggest learning of the energies of this place, whether or not you can harness them. Nothing can truly ensure you save them, but you must try nonetheless, eh?"
