You are Ushi Walker, the half-Japanese/half-American wielder of the mighty quirk “Everything is Bigger in Texas”, one of U.A. High's top first-year students, future motorcycle rider and currently trying to get some answers out of one of your quirkiest classmates, if his neighbor doesn't throw a wrench into your plans.

Bakugo's presence makes things more complicated than they ought to be when it comes to confronting Deku, but after your pathetic performance trying to cheer up Sato this morning, you feel like any attempt you could make to convince the boy to leave on your terms would just backfire. Maybe even literally, somehow. You can imagine more than a few scenarios where firefighters get involved.

Although you'd be lying to yourself if you said you didn’t also imagine just taking Bakugo out of the picture in a much more physical way. Maybe a lariat from out of nowhere?...

You shove that intrusive thought into the back of your head for a rainy day and settle upon a different course of action. You pick up the pace, following after both boys just fast enough to eventually be in range to have a normal conversation, but not too quickly as to look suspicious.

>”Bakugo is going to be trailing the entire way, Ushi. Perhaps we shoul-” Shoto tries to point him out to you.
>>
“Ah know, we’re goin’ to hafta work around it. ‘sides, he’s already in the know from last time. And considering he was also targeted along with us, he has just as much right to know as we do fer’ what Deku’s hiding." You retort. If this is something you should know, as you suspect, the ill-tempered boy has to as well.

You take Shoto’s silence at your side as a sign of agreement. From then on, you both keep hushed as you slowly creep up on the boys, until finally you are just about level with the Bakugo behind your other classmate. The former doesn’t appear to notice or is purposefully ignoring your presence. You figure that wouldn’t last long, as you reached the perfect distance to call to Deku and catch up with him in the time it takes for him to turn and recognize you.

"Hey Deku! We need to have a word 'bout what you said this weekend sugah…" You start, walking up to Midoriya's left side as Shoto comes up on his right.

>"H-hey, Walker! Uhm, what d-do you mean?" He says, scratching his messy hair with his hand.fYou both fall in line with him and all three of you continue on towards the train station.

>"Ushi and I were talking about your encounter with Shigaraki" Shoto calmly answers. It’s a surprise to you both when Deku’s eyes open wide. Not with worry as anyone might expect, but with eagerness. Along with a shade of something that looks like concern?

>"Oh right, okay! I guess Todoroki wanted to talk about it too? Well, I guess it is an interesting issue for heroics students in general. In any case, I’m glad we get to continue discussing it, now that we're both safe." Deku muses out loud, briefly looking up as he thinks about… something.

What does he think that you are thinking about?

“Uh…suuuure, right, we were waitin'. But now that we’re here, you ought to go further into it. For everyone’s sake.” You prod him to carry on, trying to get him to start talking. It'd be easier to steer an ongoing conversation than just trying to force him to open up.

>“...Okay then.” The boy answers after some hesitation, confusion crossing his face from your response before it leaves and is replaced by that contemplative look you know Deku by. "When we were being… interrogated by Shigaraki, you mentioned that The Hero Killer was right to a point, that not every hero deserved the title. But while not everyone can be a paragon like All Might, anyone can be a hero, don't you think?"

That's not what you were expecting, nor was Shoto, considering his quizzical expression.
Bakugo for his part, didn't sound particularly surprised, only amused. Or maybe you are just reading too much into his disdainful crackle.

Uh… But what to say?
>>
>What do you do?

>[A bit unexpected, but you can use this. "Uh… That's not what Ah meant to talk 'bout, but sure, if you answer my question after! >[A bit unexpected, but you can use this. "Uh… That's not what Ah meant to talk 'bout, but sure, if you answer my question after!.. Well, Ah guess you are right. It's just hard to reconcile the title of hero and someone just fighting evil as a 9-to-5 job, you know?"]

If I recall rightly, I thought the reason we agreed that there were heroes who didn’t deserve to be heroes was because we knew from Endeavor that there are heroes who will use their hero status to get away with wrongs. Not because it’s just a job or they haven’t had their mettle tested.

Tactical value of answering the question aside, I just didn’t think these options reflected what we had been talking about to Shigaraki.

Deku’s question is interesting, one you'd have fun digging into some other time and under different circumstances. But you find it hard to ponder the morality and the repercussions of fame-seeking heroes from the average Joe's perspective when you know exactly what a hero abusing his top-of-the-charts position to traumatize his family looks like. Not that you can act on the knowledge. And even if you were to bring accusations against Endeavor, the most it would do is kill your nascent career before it even truly starts.

After a short pause, your first reaction to Deku’s prompt ends up being a harrumph while staring down at your boots as you walk, kicking up dirt or gravel where you can find it, trying to vent the frustration for that topic welling back up within you.

>"You don't need to answer if you don't want to, Ushi." You hear Shoto say as he lays a hand on your shoulder from behind, jolting your shoulders straight.

You look up to your friend, and are met with an uncommon but clear expression of concern from him. He follows it with a slightest shake of his head to reinforce what you already know: don’t bring him up.

"Don't worry sugah, it's just a 'tuff question, that's all!" You smile, pushing back on the frustration with his encouragement. "Y'all know Ah'm not the best at puttin' mah thoughts into words, as Ah've… uh, demonstrated on a few occasions, Ah guess."

Shoto nods with a slight smile full of understanding and a little relief as he returns to his previous position flanking your mark, while Deku just nods with a sheepish smile.

>"Enough times to make someone wonder if it's a problem with your thoughts rather than your words." Bakugo quips from behind, getting a puff of steam out of your nose.

"Hush now sugah, the adults are talkin'." You spit back. If direct aggression normally only stokes his competitive spirit, maybe talking down to him can drive him away, at least for now.

>"I'LL BLOW YOU UP YOU H-" Bakugo metaphorically explodes before cutting himself off and covering his face with both hands, dragging them down his face as he stops in his tracks for a moment and falling behind. You are almost surprised but you know tired-grumpy when you see it.

What was far more surprising in your opinion was Deku’s nervous laughter, audible even as he covered his mouth while his gaze bounced between Bakugo and you. Before long the blond boy reappears in your field of view, now matching pace with the rest of you, red-faced and silently glaring bloody murder at the befreckled boy, whose mirth dies on the spot.

If only to avoid looking at his neighbor, now you have Deku's full attention.

You share a puzzled glance with Shoto, who just shrugs before returning his attention to Deku. Figuring that you must have stumbled onto an inside joke between neighbors, you shake your head and try to compose a less personal answer before you arrive at the train station.

"Deku, Ah think you know that sometimes there's such a thing as doing the right thing for all the wrong reasons." You start twirling a lock of your hair as you go, a small distraction to help you focus on what you are saying. "There are loads of heroes who are just in it for fortune and fame, and it's true that they're still helping people while they do it... But what happens when people like that become the majority? That’s where Ah was coming from back when our necks were in a pinch."

You give a meaningful look to him to emphasize what you said. By your reckoning, heroes only doing it for their own gain may already outnumber the selfless ones. If the boy was into heroics as much as he has let on, he ought to be able to figure the same.

"If heroes are only ever saving lives or fighting evil because they stand to gain something from it, what's going to happen when they need to put their lives on the line for someone who can't afford to…or doesn’t want to, give anything in return?" You posit with a sigh. It was only some months ago that you would have agreed with his stance from the outset. But now… "Is someone not moved by the desire to help alone, really a hero? A true hero?"

For a moment Deku seems enraptured by your answer, scratching his chin and deep in thought.

>"Can’t afford to or even… if such a thing were to happen, it'd need to be from a massive shift in how heroes are recognized..." He starts thinking out loud before descending into a fast muttering under his breath, mumbling things you can't make out.

"Oh, it could very well be hell on Earth." You agree. At least you think you are agreeing, having only heard the beginning of his thoughts. “But all too feasible. In mah opinion, anyway. And that’s what Ah mean when Ah said ‘people care about the ‘why’ as much as the ‘what.’’”

>"As interesting as the philosophical debate between the heroic ideal, the paragon and the idol are, it'd do us well to return to the matter at hand, Ushi." Shoto reminds you of your goal while subtly nodding at the approaching train station.

"Right, thanks sugah." You tell him before focusing back on Deku. "Ya know, Ah’ve’ still got a question of mah own for you, sugah. An easier one even, Ah reckon."

>"...Related to Shigaraki?" He asks, getting a nod from you. At last.

"This All for One fella you asked Shigaraki about. Is it someone we should know about? Somethin’ about The League that keeps tryin' to kill us?" You ask, keeping it fair and simple. "We did some diggin' and found a suspicious amount of nuthin', so Ah figured we'd ought to just ask up front."

Deku stumbles the moment you mention All for One, as if stepping on his shoelaces.

>"Doesn't matter." Bakugo growls. "I'll blow him to bits just like the rest of them next time they show up."

>"It matters enough to ask, to us at least." Shoto foolishly argues with him.

>"If it mattered, you wouldn't be asking him." Bakugo retorts, motioning at Deku with his chin, eminent disdain on display as usual.

>"I… Can't say." Deku slowly answers, mulling every word. Ignoring Bakugo's insults seems to be almost second nature to him. "Please, trust me on that."

One part of you is thankful he didn’t try to deny it. You didn’t want to stop and pull Tin out to have it put him on blast with a recording of his own words. On the other hand…

"Ah trusted ya when it came to your connection to All Might. That's personal. This might get someone killed, sugah. Nearly did if last weekend's anything to go by. Ah don't think we can just take your word for it this time. This matters to 1-A. All of us." You rebuke his plea, feeling a little frustrated with his non-answer.

>"Please Midoriya, just tell us what you can." Shoto insists. "Is it something we should be worried about?"

Deku looks at you, at Shoto, even glances briefly at Bakugo who continues to glare back, before peering towards the approaching train station. You briefly wonder if he'd dare to make a run for it but he doesn't even change his stride, much to your relief.

>"...You shouldn't worry about it, I think. But you will if I don't tell you." He begins his answer. By the end, he looks nearly ashamed of himself. "The villain called 'All for One' is being investigated as the mastermind behind The League of Villains. As an ongoing investigation, it's all supposed to be kept secret. But that connection with All Might I have… it’s from that that I knew that Shigaraki had talked with the villain… or at least interacted with them in some way. That’s why I ended up asking him, thinking he might let something slip that could help the investigation. He did slip up quite a bit at USJ, so I thought it was worth a shot…"

“So this ‘All for One’ is at large, not some historic boogeyman?” You return a knowing look from Shoto.
>>
>"Well… He was assumed dead until… very recently." Deku answers, nervously scratching his neck. Reminds you a bit of Shigaraki, but with less self-harm. "That's as far as I know."

“And Fingers for Brains is just a puppet hand?... Ya I guess that tracks.” Bakugo adds in with a shrug. "Pretty shit-tier mouthpiece, though… Hm."

It makes sense, both why would Deku ask about his plans and why there's no information available about the guy,... but no information available for even Endeavor’s right hand woman? If this villain was such a big deal and him being alive is such a recent revelation, wouldn’t they want all the top heroes to know to look out for him for the investigation, not just All Might?

You don’t think it’s useful, distracting even, but a different memory spurred by Deku’s explanation starts echoing in your mind.

...It always goes back to All Might, doesn't it?

…You definitely feel like there's more to all of this.

And judging by the spark returning to Bakugo's eyes, his glare intensifying towards Deku, you might not be the only one.

---

Normally, I'd explain that you'd contest by rolling better than the person trying to hide information from you, but… Uh… that's a lot of 10s up there. You can still try though! A roll for Out-Think(Brains), 5d10, could, possibly, get you there…

Or you could use RD to try and bolster Ushi’s inquisitive mind… Although there's no penalty (for you) for failure with the roll here unless you put Relationship Dice on the line, and you can always try something else.

If (when) this fails, we can always shoot our shot again by asking All-Might himself why the #2 agency in the country doesn’t have the clearance to go after the guy behind the attacks on us.

Honestly, we’ve gotten just about as much out of Deku already as I’d imagined we feasibly could. No use breaking our fingers trying to squeeze blood from a stone.

Even if we ratchet up our dice pool to the maximum, using all 3 chances, it’s still under a 5% chance of beating quads, and I don’t want to waste any miracles on this.

This system is still disgustingly retarded.
>>
>>5581421
Just because you're too smoothbrained to understand it doesn't mean it's retarded. ORE is a beautiful system that allows you to determine a huge wealth of information from a single pool of rolls. Out of combat, it tells you both how fast things get done and the quality of the work. In-combat, it tells you whose actions land first, where they hit, how hard they hit.
It is the ultimate form of a tabletop system and lesser beings are not worthy to look upon it.
>>
>>5581451
Not going to lie, I got filtered HARD when I was reading up on this quest for the first time when I tried to figure out which rolls were good ones. I appreciate the system though, seems more forgiving than d20 but not as bloated as d100, and offers a bit more complexity to boot. Maybe I'll use this system if I ever run a quest
>>
>>5581522

Yeah, the roll system can be pretty confusing.
>>
>>5581522
To be fair, there has been some slight changes to the approach (as well as how PM has used them and to what extent/fequency) since the beginning so that's not too surprising.
>>
Jeez. So was that a bunch of relationship dice with All Might or is Deku actually that much smarter than everyone else?

Some other specialization?
>>
>>5586462
Well, he's a shonen protagonist, so he must have a decent Face score. Can't give a speech that inspires people with your determination if you don't. So probably that, plus some All Might relationship dice.
>>
>>5586462
He also just got plain lucky. It’s a something like 1/200 chance to roll as well as he did with those dice.

What Deku has told you generally makes sense, as well as what he did and how he went about it… There are just so many different little side questions, most using some form of ‘Why?,’ that you wish you could rattle off in quick succession. But you feel like most of them would just get him to fall back to “It was supposed to be a secret” and won’t get you or any sort of closure.

A number of them just seem like better questions to ask All-Might himself at this point… One of them sticks with you as worthwhile to ask your classmate though. Especially considering the more-than-it-seems relationship he has with the N° 1 hero. Helps that it comes from a place of already well-reinforced cynicism for you.

“So All-Might, he really believes it better to keep us all in the dark on this? That we’re somehow safer not knowing what we’re up against?” You grill the green haired boy, with purpose. Maybe if Deku sees how this whole situation only cements further distrust in your mentors for you, he will be willing to give some detail to keep that from happening.

>“Yes.” You are taken aback by how immediate and assertive his answer is. It must show on your face because he immediately bleats out a follow up. “I mean, uh, that I think he believes that. From what I know, that he knows... what he knows must be so much more that the decision is one that he is confident on. That is, I mean…I believe him…you know?!”

“Everyone in the dark ‘xcept you and you ain’t questioning any of it. Typical.” You inhale and exhale a long trail of steam that dissipates behind your head as you all continue to walk. Part of you thinks to blame it on Japanese culture, but another suggests that you’ve completely underestimated just how blindly devoted Deku is to the N° 1 Hero.

>"It does make sense." Shoto nods along. "Father tends to keep information on a need to know basis on his most important cases. I wouldn't be surprised if All-Might did the same."

"Ah think we’ve established…" You pause, considering the words to use in front of the other boys.” That just because a hero does it, doesn’t make it the right way.” You emphasise that last phrase to really ensure that nothing you mean gets mistaken, at least between you and Shoto.

You know you hit a rather sensitive spot seeing your friend turning his gaze to the ground while furrowing his brow, but you know you have the right to it. And if you need to make amends, you'll have the whole summer to do so.

"So that’s it then, Midoriya? There’s a bigger threat, All for One has it out for us, and we’ll just have to trust you and All Might to let us know when we can stop watching our backs?" You fold your arms in front of you to emphasize your annoyance at his pigheadedness.

>"I-I know it must be hard, but I need you to trust me on this too." The boy pleads. "When… if the time comes and I can tell you, I will. It's not like I like this part at all…"

You glare at him while blowing another bout of clouds out your nose and give a final harrumph. Short of beating the answers out of him, you aren’t getting anywhere with this. And physically bullying a classmate you generally like wasn’t something you had envisioned for your afternoon.

Bakugo, on the other hand, gives a dry laugh before looking you in the eye.

>"That's it?" Bakugo asks as he walks ahead of you and in-front of his neighbor. "'Cause I think there's still plenty to talk about…"

"Ah'd rather not make a scene at the train station." You grumble, nodding at said building, now little more than a block away.

>"Don't worry about that. Mrs. Midoriya for sure will be glad the little shit stayed out a little late with some pals for once!" The ashen blond boy says before grabbing Midoriya by his upper arm.

Oh boy.

Bakugo immediately pulls him in to closest perpendicular alleyway . Midoriya barely stays upright as he follows, grasping his- You are pretty sure ‘friend’ isn't the right word- grasping Bakugo's wrist, trying to pry him off, but the taller boy doesn't let up, towing him along with a wicked grin.

>"Go on, use that quirk you told me about to escape." He taunts him without looking back at the boy as he pulls him further into the alleyway. "It smashes through concrete with ease, surely you've made it your own enough by now to just tug me off?"

Made it his own? What was he talking about?... Does he know something you don't too!?

You may have felt like you hit a dead end, but that clearly doesn't apply to Bakugo, who seems to know more than you expected, including what buttons to push to put Midoriya back on his heels. For someone that seemingly hates his guts, he seems to know Midoriya all too well.

Your hopes to get a solid answer today start soaring again as you peerafter them from the mouth of the alley, but a quick glance at Shoto's disapproving expression immediately reminds you that Midoriya's his friend too, and that this is hitting quite a few sour notes with him.He clearly doesn't approve of Bakugo's manhandling your classmate, and to be fully honest with yourself, you don't either… But with a chance of a breakthrough in sight… Maybe…

Maybe you can look the other way this time?... Or even help?
>>
>What do you do?

>[Bakugo seems to know what he's doing… You should help him out. "C'mon sugah, Ah won't ask you to help us with this, but Ah wanna see him spill his guts… and there's no better way to make sure it won't be anythin’ near literal than by helpin' out."]

Sorry for the small update, I wanted to get something like this posted early last week but didn't manage to. My ideal is to get a couple decent posts a week instead of like 2 updates a month of a few thousand words (unless there's a reason to).

Even fishing for answers, I think this method would definitely not sit well with her. She'd probably regret it even if she did get the answers she wanted.

We have been getting up Bakugo's craw too much. Let him do his fireworks display to make Deku talk. He's out for answers just like Ushi, not to hurt him.

Way I figure it, despite our disapproval, Deku considers Bakugo his oldest friend. Let’s try to respect the history between them and let’m hash this out. Might be good for their relationship.

If it turns literally violent, we’ll pull’m apart.

Who knows, the worst case might be Deku gets a chance to practice some backbone.

Feels fin to let them hash it out. If Bakugo goes harder than this we can step in. We'll probably lose some points with Deku here but I'm fine with that, he's being unnecessarily evasive about something that affects the team (not to mention us personally).

There might not be a better time to get some answers now that we've pressed.

Agreed, theres the set of chars that I have deigned worth going in-depth with (and Tsu beyond them but we have yet to really hang out with her) and Deku is not among them. So really no matter to me if he has a relative negative rep with us.
>>
You know, I’m a little worried that if we shut down Bakugo’s line of questioning here, he’ll just corner him again later when we’re not there to make sure he doesn’t get violent.

We just tried the easy way, we are not getting any answers whitout some pressure.

Thing is, we don't really need the answers right now? We are not in any kind of hurry. The stakes aren't high. Stakes only get kind of high during and after the camp. But we're not there yet, and not gonna be there for another 2-3 IRL years. So I think we can drop the topic just fine and chill

Sucks to antagonize Bakugo because I think he and Ushi have an interesting dynamic, but considering we're talking about Ushi "entire library of childhood bullying stories" Walker here it's hard to imagine she'd be even passively okay with it.
