/qst/ - Quests

(This is my first attempt at a quest. Keep your expectations low and go easy on me, please)

Standing in front of you from across the table is a girl with a weird hairdo. Your opponent. On the table rests your hard-earned deck of cards. There's nothing but darkness all around you, and yet you feel watched by countless stares. Your heart is pounding and your hands are sweaty, despite your best efforts to keep your cool. Your life is at stake after all.
What will you do before the duel begins?

>Look at your deck

You flip through your deck one last time before shuffling it. The back side of each card is pitch black, while the front is hand drawn: you made them yourself, after all. You created it following the instructions you found online: choose one of four decks, make a physical copy of it ( you had to draw every single card, since you didn't own a printer), then perform a ritual to infuse it with power. Of course, you chose...
>Cyan: a slow, controlling deck that focuses on negating your opponent's actions and acquire board advantage. It's signature card is Electric Eye
>Magenta: a tempo deck, looking to create and exploit openings in the opponent's defenses. It's signature card is Causality Cruiser
>Yellow: a ramp deck, specialized in quickly acquiring resources to play expensive and spectacular cards. It's signature card is Flesh-Bastard Hydra
>Black: an aggressive deck, it wants to close out games as quickly as possible through overwhelming force. It's signature card is Iron Leviathan

>>Yellow: a ramp deck, specialized in quickly acquiring resources to play expensive and spectacular cards. It's signature card is Flesh-Bastard Hydra

You stare at Flesh-Bastard Hydra as if you could talk to her. If you can get her to stick to the battlefield, you are almost guaranteed to win, but it will take a while before you get there.

"We don't have much time. Let's begin". It's the first time you hear your opponent talk. Her voice is surprisingly soft, contrasting with her bombastic haircut. She is right, though. You can feel the invisible spectators getting restless. If they aren't entertained, they will devour you both.
"You may start. I don't need to go first"
[How to play]
Every turn you will be asked to choose which cards to play. As the game progresses and you accumulate resources, you will gain access to more powerful cards, or be able to play multiple, weaker cards.
Each turn you'll be either the attacker or the defender. You start as the attacker, next turn you'll be the defender and so on.
(I'll explain rolls later)
You draw five cards and plan your move. As it's only the first turn, so your actions are limited.
Choose one:
>Play Organ Harvest, a spell that gives you more resources
>Fat Storage, a weak creature that will empower the next card you play
>Stacy, a defensive creature
>Do nothing (gain resources)
While you think about your line of action, you...
>Take deep breaths to calm your nerves
>Study your opponent, looking for her tell
>Make small talk, get her to lose her focus

Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. Panic and adrenaline flow through your veins. In a game of life and death, there's no room for error. Inhale. Exhale. You must get in the zone. Right now, there's only your opponent, you, and the cards. You got this.
You use one resource to play Fat Storage. He won't do much on his own, but your next play will be much more impactful.
It's your opponent's turn. She seems to be thinking carefully about her play. Is she feeling as anxious as you? You can't tell.

>[Rolling&Combat Resolution]
To find out whether you successfully deal or defend from damage, you will be flipping coins (roll 1d2. 1 is heads, 2 is tails). How many coins you flip will be determined by many factors, like the cards you play, your board state, your strategy, your mental state etc. Each coin flip has a stated difficulty class, so to succeed in a DC 2 roll, you must flip 2 heads. I will randomly select one of the first 5 rolls.

>Flip 1 coin. Difficulty Class 1.

Not sure how that card makes our next play more impactful.
Either

Your opponent matched your creature with one of her own, Empath. As expected, your attack didn't go through. Your opponent is playing a Magenta deck. She will likely be the aggressor, this game.
The first round ends. You both draw a card, gain a resource and start anew. Unfortunately, Flesh-Bastard Hydra is still in your deck and you didn't draw any immediately playable card, so your choice is still limited to:
>Organ Harvest, a spell that gives you more resources
>Stacy, a defensive creature
>Do nothing (gain resources)
Fat Storage is still in play, but is damaged and will likely die this turn, empowering your next play.
"Why are you doing this?". Her question comes as a bit of a surprise. She didn't strike you as the talkative type. "Do you have a wish so important you are willing to throw your life away for it?".
What is your answer?
>I want to change my life
>There's someone I wish to save
>There's someone I wish to destroy

>She's bluffing! Run her over!
You attack her directly. You clench your teeth and wait as three tense seconds pass...
"It resolves" she says, with a hint of annoyance in her voice. Ah! You saw right through her bluff and scored first blood: you need four more attacks to connect to win. You think you hear a devious laugh coming from the dark, but you might be simply imagining things.
Before the turn ends, your opponent plays Peeping Tom, a Martyr-type: they are creatures that have powerful enter-the-battlefield effects, but are immediately destroyed upon coming into play; Organ Harvest is also a Martyr.
Peeping Tom forces you to reveal your hand to your opponent and shuffle a card of their choice back in the deck. After a few seconds of deliberation, your opponent picks Stitched Idiots.
As you shuffle your deck, a thought comes to mind. You could easily try to put Flesh-Bastard Hydra on top: you feel confident you can fool your opponent and there's no judge around, but there's no telling how your demonic spectators might react.

>What is this place?
It's hard to describe. You can clearly see your opponent and the table, but there's no recognizable light source. It's almost like the darkness around isn't absence of light, but a filter over your own eyes. You hear whispers but there's only silence, you feel their touch but there's only void. The guide you found on the internet mentioned that the duel would take place in "their" court, whatever that means. All you know is that you were swallowed by the dark right as you met with your opponent.
The girl played Liche, a zombie capable of temporarily resurrecting other Zombies. "Then, I remove two parts attached to Magus to move your cards to an empty space".
You are left wide open and take three damage! Your defenses are greatly weakened. Any slip up would spell your doom now. Panic surges through your mind, and you begin breathing heavily.
>Panic rolls

>Tell her your name Raff Barron.
>"Don't talk to me like you've already won."

Your heart sinks as you fail to deal any direct damage. Is this how you die? Was your opponent right about you?
No. No. You look at the board. You destroyed Magus and Liche, her only card on the field is Melancolia. You, meanwhile, have two giant creatures.
"Don't talk to me like you've already won. I'm Raff Baron, and I'll be the one who defeats you!"
You confidently draw a card for the turn. It's not Hydra. You feel slightly less confident.
You now have enough resources to play two cards per turn.
Choose up to two:
>Organ Harvest, a Martyr that gives you resources
>Cancro, a creature that can heal from the damage it's taken
>Curio Collector, a creature that lets you trade a card in your hand for one in the discard pile (Pick what you discard and what you get back)
>Baroque, a creature that lets you send a card of your choice from your deck to the discard pile to gain resources
>Chimaera, a creature that deals double damage if it gets to attack directly

>Curio Collector(Bring back stitched idiots)

*Bring back stitched idiots, discard cancro
>>
>>5727090
The obvious play here is.
Baroque to get the hydra into the graveyard.
Curio collector to get the hydra out of the graveyard. Discard Cancro?
>>
>>5727138
Sounds like Baroque maybe can't be used immediately?
In which case we should play Baroque to set up a play like that, and NOT play curio collector.
Maybe Chimaera? Throw more big creatures at her so if she reads our play and removes the Baroque somehow, there are other threats she isn't dealing with.
Or Organ Harvest if we need more resources for the hydra I guess.

Hahaha, you are a genius! This setup guarantees you get to play Hydra next turn. She's done for!

"May I see that?". While you are in the middle of congratulating yourself, your opponent asks to see Hydra. You look at the board: you haven't played Curio Collector yet, so Hydra is still in the discard pile. You are pretty sure there's no rule that forbids looking at the opponen't discard pile, so you begrudgingly hand her the card.

You can see her eyes going over the text again and again. Every time she does, her frown gets deeper. When you play Curio Collector and get it back in your hand, she begins biting her thumb.
Seems like a good sign.

Your opponent plays Causality Cruiser, a creature that makes two enemy cards collide and deal damage to each other. Mother of the Beast and Teratoma are heavily damaged, and Mother is destroyed in the following combat step, but you are safe for another turn. The girl is turning her thumb into a bloody mess and she's murmuring something to herself. Or is she talking with the spectators? No way to tell, but it doesn't matter. She isn't long for this world.

Does this game have counterspell? You have no idea, so you play Hydra and hope for the best. She resolves comes into play, but your opponent doesn't seem to be paying attention. Her head is tilted upwards and she's still talking to herself. You aren't sure what to make of her sudden change of attitude, so you decide to not think about it and move to combat. As you do, she closes her eyes and says "I will do anything. I accept your contract".

Thanks to some twisted whim of fate, Hydra couldn't deal any damage to your opponent, but you still have a powerful board going into next turn.
"I apologize for calling you a fool. You've proven yourself to be a fearsome foe. But I can't die now".
She holds her left arm in the air for a few seconds. Then, it's gone. Her screams fill the void and a fountain of blood springs from her arm socket. You are both covered in blood, as are the table and the cards. Whether it's shock, surprise, or sheer horror, you are paralyzed.
Slowly, her screams die down. She desperately tries to pull herself together, her face deformed by pain and her eyes red with blood and tears. In her right hand, a card. Its back is perfectly white, there's not a single stain on it. It's so white, it's almost hard to look at.
"Now..." Her throat is sore and her voice is broken. You can barely make out what she's saying. "Now... let's kill each other".

> Play nothing*2 (let hydra work)

Tiebreak first to last.
She got that card because it solves her situation somehow.
She's the next attacker, so there's no point playing offensive creatures right now.
Her card probably either wins her the game quickly (in which case we probably end up making a sacrifice)
Or it deals with our board unconditionally (in which case conserving resources is best.)
Or it deals with our board using damage (in which case we can maybe tank it using andaluz, but conserving resources is the safer play.)

>Organ Harvest, a Martyr that gives you resources
>Chimaera, a creature that deals double damage if it gets to attack directly
The smell of iron fills your nostrils. The girl is panting heavily. You understand she made a deal of some kind: her arm for that white card. There was nothing like that in the rules you read. Is this cheating? Can you do it as well? The thought of losing a limb makes you shiver.
You have no idea what the white card might do, so you opt for closing the game quickly and play Chimaera and the Organ Harvest that you've held in your hand all this time.
Your opponent plays the white card. At first, its front side looks as empty as its back, but looking closely, the are reliefs on in the shape of some sort of sigil. The girl drags her finger on the relief, staining it with her blood and revealing the design.
"This is...". Excise/Journey. The words ring in your head, like she's speaking directly in your mind. Flesh Bastard Hydra is lifted in the air by an invisible force, then it's cleanly cut in half. You immediately understand that Hydra is gone forever, from this game and every future game.

When the new turn begins, your opponent smears more blood on the white card, and Chimaera is destroyed just like Hydra was. Your complaints fall on deaf ears, as she's in too much pain to pay attention to you. You never heard of white cards, but you figure this one destroys a card each turn. You are on a clock now, though you don't know how long she'll last before she dies from blood loss. What would even happen then? Would you win? Stay trapped here forever? You decide that you don't want to find out.

Her face is pale. You look at her straight in the eyes, and she stares back. She seems to hesitate for a second, then says: "If you defeat me, and keep walking this path... you will learn. Of the power, and the horror, that lies beneath our duels. If even my sacrifice wasn't enough, then...". She can't bring herself to finish the sentence. She's can barely hold back her sobs. You look down on the table.
Your opponent plays a second Liche, which in turns resurrects Causality Cruiser and destroys two of the zombies summoned by Hydra. You quickly dump your whole hand on the field, knowing that if she had a board clear she would've used it already. You can't tell whether she has a plan or she's just desperate and hoping for a miracle.

The last of her defenses goes down. You look at each other in silence for a few seconds before the realisation kicks in.
The girl falls to her knees. "I...I lost".
A rush of adrenaline fills your brain, and it takes all your self control to stop yourself from exulting in front of the person you've doomed. She clutches her arm socket tight and finally breaks down. You can barely hear her say "it's not right...they promised... it's not right...".
Before you can say anything, your excitement is replaced by an oppressive feeling of dread. The shades are gathering around your opponent. She screams, then she's consumed by darkness. There's only silence. Your opponent and the spectators are gone. Your head starts spinning, and soon you pass out.
You wake up in a dark alley. You are alone. Your memories are slowly coming back to you. This is where you and your opponent agreed to meet online. Somehow, you were transported to that place right after you met.
Something on the ground catches your attention. A card. You pick it up and examine it. On the top it says "Causality Cruiser".
You sit in the alley for almost an hour, stunned. Then you get up and head back home, where your prize awaits you.

This is the end of the oneshot. I'm very grateful to everyone who played, and especially to the people that stuck around to the end.
Before the thread is archived, I would really like to hear your feedback. I admit I got a bit lazy at the end, and I don't think I have the work ethic to run a long form quest, but it was still fun and I hope it was for you as well
>>
>>5750307
I enjoyed it! The method by which we 'played' the card game made a lot of sense for this format. The atmosphere was forbidding and gloomy in a good way. I hope you consider teying your hand at running something again, even if it's not exactly like this. Thanks for running!
>>
>>5750307

It was really cool! The two unique styles of the cards sets up a really interesting contrast. My understanding of the game itself is pretty spartan, but I don't think that hurt the quest much.

Was very pleased that you stuck with it to the end. Thanks for running.
>>
>>5750307
+ Dramatic high stakes spooky card game is a fun vibe, and the art worked perfectly.

+ there were a few decisions I initially felt uncertain about, but which grew on me.
> designated attacker and defender each round
> coinflip system plus die to determine which set. (Felt quite dramatic, and was less cumbersome than it looked)

- I had difficulty following the board state and rules? There should maybe have been recaps of how the board looks, how many cards the opponent has, etc., after each opponent turn. Unless very little happened.
>>
>>5750336
>>5750326
>>5750325
I'm happy to hear you enjoyed this game, really makes the effort worth it. Here's a ruleset I made for the game a while ago, it probably won't entirely make sense but should give you an idea of what the game is like
>>
>>5750361
Using different colors of cards in your discard pile as the main resources is neat. And having no actual "exile" zone, just temporary limbo and Actually destroying the card. Scaling the zombies with their parts seems very overcomplicated for a quest.

Kinda wonder how you'd do an MTG-style temporary removal effect. (e.g. portable hole)

Zombie that removes an enemy zombie when you play it.
The enemy zombie's main card becomes one of the parts of yours, the rest go into void.
When yours dies, put the removed zombie into their hand.
>>
>>5750389
I figure it would work something like this
"When [cardname] etb, destroy target zombie. That zombie can't leave limbo while [cardname] is on the field. When [cardname] leaves the field, return that zombie to its owner's hand"
Though I do like the idea of keeping it captive in your parts.

>>
>>5751652

>>
>>5751652

>>
>>5751766

>>
>>5751766
I can kinda imagine a narrative + dice based way to resolve multiple turns at once? So we only start caring about what exact cards we play once the midgame starts.
Assign dice to priorities.

Different decks have access to different priorities.

E.g. ramp has
> grow own board
> grow own resources
> pursue finisher
> maintain hand size/quality

Tempo has
> grow own board
> suppress opponent board (subtract die from their grow board roll)
> suppress opponent hand (subtract die from their maintain hand roll)
> deal damage

Each option defaults to a D4. We assign a D8 to one option, and a D6 to another. The rest are D4s.
Opponent does the same for their own options.

Start: talk to opponent
Opening moves: assign 1d4 and 1d6 to two priorities and roll
Characters react: talk to opponent
Going into the decisive part of the game: assign 1d4 and 1d8 to the remaining priorities and roll.
Calculate how the board looks right now.
Strict gameplay starts.

e.g.

Result:
us:
grow board 5
grow resources 3
pursue finisher 2
maintain hand 3

opponent
grow board 1
suppress opponent board 4
suppress opponent hand 1
Deal damage 6

So we start
Opponent has removed two meatshields (-1+(6/3)), but stalled out to and had to remove all creatures, then we played one small creature (0+5-4), and they played one small creature (0+1)
We have four cards (2+3-1), they have two (base number, they don't have dice for this)
We don't really have any progress on finding our finisher.

Would probably be better with d2, d4, d6. Not d4, d6, d8.
