Welcome back to the world of Untamed, a collaborative Civilization-style world-building project. I use Project instead of Quest because you, the players, are going controlling a civilization from nomadic hunter-gatherers to a massive empire instead of a traditional story-driven quest. The only story here will be an emergent one that concerns the history of an ever-growing population of people and the struggles they face throughout the ages. Eventually, at the end of the project, a fully fleshed-out world will have emerged.

You, the anons of /qst/, control a civilization in a randomly-generated world, experiencing random events each age and fleshing out the history, technology and lore of this civilization one age at a time. There are also players who control their own civilizations individually; they play by the same rules as this thread does. The game is played out in a series of ages, in which players experience random events, are given the choice to perform a number of actions of their desire, and progress along technological and magical trees. Much like in a Civilization-style game, once each player has finished their actions for an age, all players advance to the next era and the cycle continues. You will be playing the game alongside my players, eventually interacting with them through the lens of these threads. You will vote on everything that happens to your civilization, which will be the only one in this game with more than one person controlling it and the only anonymously-controlled society.

This is going to be a long-form game, and may not be akin to traditional civ-style quest threads on this board.

This begins the 12th age of our people, the Roman-inspired Half-Elves.
>>
In the last thread, our civilization was beset by terrible storms that afflicted the entire region in which we lived. It was a dark time for our people, during which a terrible subversive power arose within the civilization promising an end to the storms but was eventually put down and order restored. Our people suffered for a long while under the cruel heel of the seemingly never-ending storm, but as with all things, it passed in time. The century storm departed and the sun shone through once again.

The discovery of a strange pocket dimension amidst some standing stones and its monstrous troll-like inhabitant spurred much discussion amongst the leadership in regards to how it should be utilized. With one of our dragons dealing with the troll, the strange time mechanics of the pocket dimension were discovered; anything within it is preserved for years and years, for time passes slowly within. It was eventually elected to turn this pocket dimension into a storage room for our food, in case of another crisis like that storms of this age.

We also established a royal guard, an elite unit of warriors to protect our Rex/Regina.

In the eleventh age of our world, not too many new achievements were won by other players: Early Medicine was unlocked first by the Mongolian Centaurs, and an unknown civilization invented Numerology.

Sadly, one of our players, who controlled the Babylonian Giants civilization, has voluntarily departed from the project, citing being too busy to respond promptly. Regrettable, but understandable; the Babylonian Giants will continue as an NPC civilization controlled by myself, and they are up for adoption as well, along with the Anasazi Yuan-Ti, the Ottoman civ, and the Zulu civ, all of which are currently controlled by myself.

A player has adopted the English civ, revealing them to the other players and this thread: the English Halflings.

Here is our current civilization map.

In the tenth age, our people hatched two dragon eggs that arrived in meteoric primordial dragon-like beings who died upon experiencing our atmosphere and reformed into eggs like a phoenix. At the end of the 11th Age, it was decided to not yet hatch the other two meteoric dragon eggs; they are still housed within the Curia (mage hall).

As our two dragons have been alive for two ages now, they are still in relative Juvenile status; they will be of young adulthood and able to breed next age.

Animals Domesticated/Domesticating (Frequent sights in our civilization):
Cows
Wolves
Horses (Mustangs)
Chamoises (Goat-Antelope)
Llamas
Herd-Bugs
Stegosauruses

Crops cultivated by our people:
Nectarines
Rice
Peas
Star Fruits
Grapes
Red Cabbage
Peppers
Shallots

Hexes surrounding our two other communities have been revealed due to natural exploration and observation of those living within them. The northern and northeastern hexes of Sylvia, both of which are sea hexes, contain nothing notable.

The hex south of Taurica contains Talbuk herds, majestic stag-antelope-like creatures with large horns, powerful hooves and lustrous coats. The hex southwest of Taurica contains two strange obelisks covered in unknown runes that flank the entrance to a large tomb; none have explored its depths.

Here are our current population demographics.

Last age, the daughters of the half-vampire twins married scions of their sister bloodline; they themselves were descended from the Fourth Rex, and the men they married were descendants of the First Rex. With this rejoining of the distant bloodlines, the wedded pairs bred prodigiously, each producing three children; a son, a daughter, and a son in the exact same order. Even though the stigma of thirdborn sons surrounded both families, they grew up healthy and strong, all with stunning stark-white hair and pale skin. The first two children of the descendant of the free-spirited half-vampiric brother were twins, and they both have grown up in this age to be prominent leaders of the community, exemplars of our civilization. Fiercely competitive, they both were in a prime position to be the new leader of our civilization, the coveted role of the Tenth Rex (or Regina).

In the end, the male scion won the competition, and was selected as the 10th Rex. His twin sister, ever by his side, became an accomplished Diplomat, a Great Person of the age. Their brother, meek and unnoticed, is easily lost in the long shadows his exemplary siblings cast. The other three children descended from the more serious-minded half-vampiric brother, while still notable and contributing members of society, are not as relevant to the larger goings-on of this age.

The 10th Rex was crowned in a great ceremony presided over by the Crimson Serpent, the immortal naga who guides and advises our people and whom our people worship and pay tribute to (ever reluctantly on his part).

And now, for the random events of our age.

>Age Quality
It is an Age of Research. This age, scholarly minds abound with new thoughts and ideas. It is a time of learning, of testing and triumph of intellect. Research-based initiatives will be more successful this age, and have less difficulty in acquiring support and funding. On a surface mechanical level, this allows for the free unlocking of a technology of your choice, developed by the inquisitive minds of the age, from your current list of available technologies.

Please vote on a free technology to unlock for our civilization:

Very well then, the Furnace it is, in which more advanced forms of cooking and metallurgy will eventually be forged in. For the time being, however, it will afford greater comfort, heat and utility for drying meats and other useful functions.

We now move onto the next randomly-generated event.

>Infiltration!

It has come to our attention that the rat-goblins have been sneaking into our lands more and more frequently as of late, and are now making their way into our cities. These rat-like goblinoids have been skulking about, mostly at night, digging burrows in which to hide. When glimpsed, they would always run and hide, and many believed initially they were mistaken or had seen something else. However, definitive proof is obtained when a particularly vigilant group of guards captures a pair of the rat-goblins and strings them up in a net.

The rat-goblins attempt to escape by chewing through their bonds, but a threat of violence if they do so keeps them in check. The rat-goblins deny any attempts at broader infiltration; they claim to be alone, but this is known to not be the case, for the number of reports and location of them are too numerous and spread out to be done by merely two of them.

In the midst of questioning, however, is when reports of illnesses start coming in. Tainted food and water causing terrible sores and boils begin to afflict your people on a wide scale, causing great pain and discomfort. It is known that two ages ago, the rat-goblins habit of burying their dead in the water was causing your people to become ill, but now it seems the rat-goblins have harnessed this and employed it on a mass-scale. The captured rat-goblins initially profess no knowledge of any such plot, but when tortured they reveal that it is indeed their doing. They, and many other scout cells, have been crossing into your lands and purposefully contaminating food sources while their main population focused on contaminating the water supply (as they live upstream of your people). The reason is apparently due to your dragons, which are demons of fire and smoke in their sky-worship religion (the dragon's history of eating their kind is also a contributing factor).

It is difficult to determine how many of your people have fallen ill already, but the effects are already upon you, reducing the effectiveness of the populace. Regardless, action must be taken. What will we do to combat the disease? How will we respond to this act of aggression by the rat-goblins?
>>

It is on purpose which means War.

Seperate the spoiled food and water from the clean ones and investigate any water source that we have. they may have buried bodies in them.

Execute the prisoners and promise to spare their lives if they rat ouf their friends

Have any shamans and/or healers try to find cures, and quarantine the worst affected areas and people.
Send emissaries to the rat-goblins to stop that shit, or else we're kicking them out with our dragons.

Multiple initiatives are put into effort to combat the growing plague; quarantine, cleansing of food, separation of suspected contaminated material, but despite all of our attempts we are unable to fight the infection or stifle its spread. The rat-goblins must have been plotting this for some time now, gathering materials and intelligence in preparation for this day. It is clear that if we wish to stop the infection, we must stop it at its source: the rat-goblin civilization.

The two that we have captured are tortured. However, no knew intel is gained from this; it seems the crafty leadership of the rat-goblins kept the full scope of the plan from its advance scouts. A prudent move on their part, for now we do not know what to expect. Attempts at divination reveal nothing of substance; the seers are afflicted with the disease and unable to perform their duties as capably as usual.

The Rex calls for war! His twin sister, however, believes that some diplomatic initiative can be achieved, but does agree that these actions demand reprisal on our part. The Rex calls for an ultimate extermination, whereas his sister believes that the rat-goblins could be harnessed in some other fashion, perhaps as a servile class, controlled and corralled to the benefit of the civilization. The thirdborn son has a suggestion, but his is lost amidst the debate between his much more prominent elder siblings.

The dragons are still in healthy and fighting condition, and it has been quite a few years since they have been allowed to attack the rat-goblins. The two we have captured are deemed no longer of any use, and so are fed to the dragons, a fitting end that brings some morale to the people who gather to watch the spectacle of the public execution.

With the twins in agreement that an immediate combative reprisal is demanded, the civilization prepares to go to war. Right now, as our warriors are of a hardier and sterner stock, our fighting force is only reduced to about 90% efficiency, with the remainder too sick to fight. Without divination to predict what may lie ahead of us, we may very well be marching our soldiers into some manner of trap.

>What tactics do we plan to put into effect before making contact with the enemy? How will we utilize the dragons, if at all? What time of day do we attack? How do we approach the enemy? etc.

I'm very doubtful that the Serpent will just allow us to enact a genocide. This was a poorly thought out decision, imho.

That said, the rat-goblins seem nocturnal, so we should attack in the morning.
The dragons should be utilized to disperse any large concentrations of the enemy and scout from above. I'm wary of possible traps, so the dragons should not be allowed to land and especially not to eat anything.
Our warriors should form a chain to intercept the enemies fleeing from the dragons. With the dragons taking care of any large formations, they should be in no danger.
>>
>>5726337
Also, we can drive the goblins into the river.
>>
>>5726337
Surround the population centers of the rats, loose the dragons with a renewed taste for their flesh upon the towns. And we shall slaughter or capture any and all that excape the carnage and confusion.
>>
>>5726321
We should make extensive use of our wolf scouts and the dragons to scope out our approach and flanks, then we burn their settlement to the ground.

Use Dragons and scouts to screen for traps and ambushes. Once our path is secure, raze their settlement to the ground and kill any ratmen on sight.

The battle plan laid out, our forces move into position, led by the Rex, his sister and their thirdborn brother. Our scouts and their elite wolf scout brothers move ahead to secure the way and sniff out any ambush, and our dragons (with express orders not to land during the battle) assist them, flying overhead to survey the plains.

Knowing well the home of our enemy, in the heart of the plains alongside their river, we know that we need only few scout forces on the northern side to deal with any rat-goblins that make their way across the river seeking sanctuary from the attack. The bulk of our army is on the south side of the river, and our scouting is successful; we manage to maneuver our forces into position without being seen by the enemy.

At the crack of dawn, the signal is given, and the attack begins. The dragons descend from the heavens like the demons of their heathen religion, bringing fire and death from above. They unleash torrents of flame from their gullets that set aflame anything they touch; huts, stockpiles, living beings. The village is quickly reduced to a burning ruin.

The rat-goblins attempt to fight back, slinging stones and javelins into the air, but the dragons are too fast and ferocious, changing up their attack direction and working in tandem so that when one dragon finishes its attack run, another begins from a different direction. The chaos and confusion spread panic and the rat-goblins begin to run.

Our forces are ready for them, killing and capturing them by the dozens. Our scouts pursue those that make it through the net of our forces, running after them for miles or letting loose our hounds upon them. The rat-goblins have no chance; whatever ambush or tactics they had in mind are gone. Your forces outmatch them numerically and physically; their smaller, scrawnier bodies are no match for your warriors, even with your force slightly weakened due to illness.

When it is done, their village is nothing more than a smoking wreck. Your dragons feast upon those bodies that are already charred while your army assembles all of the survivors and captives. There are somewhere around two-and-a-half-thousand of the rat-goblins that remain, mostly women and children and what remains of the warriors, hunters and scouts.

The Rex and his sister once more argue over what to do with the prisoners. The Rex seeks total elimination of these foul vermin; they are worthless, ugly things, unfit to see the light of day, carriers and spreaders of disease. Our ancestors left them alive, and what did it earn us? Suffering and death at the hands of their intentionally-spread illness. Furthermore, their religion runs counter to our own, and our beloved dragons are demons to them. His twin argues that they can be useful, perhaps as labor or house-servants, even shock-troops to send in waves against an enemy. The presence of the dragons alone would cow them into submissiveness, as they have developed a taste for rat-goblin flesh.

The Rex argues that bringing them into our lands and homes is only inviting future disaster, as would be leaving them alone; one allows them to conspire within our very homes, and the other allows them to regroup and try again in the future. People have suffered and died due to their disease-spreading, and putting them all to the torch would only improve the future. The sister yet feels that if they were controlled, perhaps through a system of neutering most males to prevent large warrens from forming and out-of-control breeding, they could be a valuable (if expendable) resource.

The thirdborn son suggests seeking guidance from the naga, but his suggestion is yet again drowned out in the passionate debate of his siblings.

>What to do with the prisoners?
>>
>>5726524
I guess asking the Naga would be prudent. But i am not trusting these creatures to be anywhere near anything important, we saw what they could do, if they got access to a granary or the like it would spell doom for us.

Also, we got any tech from them for taking over their city ?

Either total extermination or the castration of all males. Don't want any permanent underclass and as the Rex said, look where mercy has gotten us.

>>
>>5726524
If anons don't have the heart for extermination banishment is the only option. Their foulness will infect our people if we try to keep them as slaves.

Tell them to cross the mountains to the west and never return, or kill them all on the spot.

But sure, consult the Red Serpent first.
>>
>>5726524

Since this has already been done, we need to fully get rid of them. Leaving them be will only cause major problems in the future.
I don't think it's wise to ask for the Serpent's advice now.

The warriors and assembled scouts heed the words of the Rex, and champion his cause. They call for blood! His twin, knowing when to concede, nods her approval at last and the Rex announces the total extermination of the filthy vermin.

One of their heathen priests arises and proclaims that they will be avenged in the end. Your dalliance with the demons of the sky, these beasts of smoke and ash and death, will be the end of you! He curses your civilization to die a horrible, choking death of black and evil smoke and fire!

The Rex replies with some wit that he'll be glad to deliver them the very death of which the priest speaks, and commands the dragons to burn the crowd. The warriors cheer as the dragons unleash a torrent of flames and the air becomes thick and rancid with the scent of burnt rat-goblin flesh. The Rex looks on with a smile as his twin frowns; she feels it is a waste, but is glad that at the very least the problem is solved. The thirdborn son looks on in horror as the women and children, ugly though they may have been, are roasted alive and the civilization of the rat-goblins scorched off the face of the earth.

It is unknown in the annals of history if what follows is a result of the rat-goblin's words, or merely a cosmic coincidence, but its results were nonetheless devastating.

>Age 12 Random Event 2: Disaster - Meteor Storm

As the army prepares to leave, the sky seems to darken, and dim orange lights can be glimpsed through the clouds. Suddenly, streaking across the sky are several massive meteors, from which break off dozens of smaller flaming chunks. Much like ages ago, these heavenly fireballs descend with great fury, smashing the landscape and setting ablaze forests and plains alike.

And, in perhaps the cruelest twist of fate, the rat-goblins hex is where one such meteor lands, in addition to five others scattered randomly throughout the region. The army scatters and the dragons take to the sky in the hopes of avoiding a terrible fate, but the terrible stone has other plans, impacting on the terrain with a great explosion of fire and dirt and carving a path through our forces as though a cruel and angry god had thrown it at us intentionally. Smaller chunks of fire break off and scatter around, setting fire to the plains around us; the chaos of smoke and fire becomes an impenetrable haze of chaos.

One of our dragons flies up, but is struck by flaming debris and cast down to the earth. The other dragon swoops down to attempt to aid his egg-mate, but tragically, the debris blew a hole clean through her. She is dead.

Miraculously, all three of the nobles survived, but a massive chunk of our fighting force was wiped out by the meteor. The meteor itself, much like the tales of old, suddenly cracks open and unfurls into a great and terrible primordial dragon, a creature not of this plane of existence, who unleashes one final roar and a volcanic spout of flame before dying to the conditions of our world. In its place it leaves two eggs, creatures who will be adapted to this world's environment.

Our male dragon lets out a long, mighty cry as it mourns the loss of his kin. Our forces re-assemble and assess the damage; there are many, many dead and wounded.

The march back to home is not an easy one, and fears abound about the other meteors that were seen streaking through the sky. What if one hit home? Or one of the other cities?

Thankfully, it is not the case. Our capital, as well as our other two cities, are untouched, but the lands nearby are not.

Our naga lord and guide is disheartened at the news of the wholesale slaughter of the rat-goblinoids, but concedes that perhaps it was the only prudent solution to a difficult problem. Even so, the timing of these meteors seems almost too coincidental; perhaps they are a form of divine punishment, or perhaps it was merely random fate. He does not dare suggest that it was deserved retribution for our slaughter. Either way, it is not good to dwell on the unfortunate rat-goblin situation when there are much greater issues at hand; nameless the illnesses and the meteors.

>Random Event 3: Magical Curatives Discovered

With the guidance of the naga, our civilization unlocks a new rank in Restoration magic, earning us a total of two ranks (Apprentice level). This newfound level of magical healing allows us to completely wipe out the rat-goblin contagion, decontaminate our food and water supplies, and tend to the horrible burns of the survivors of the meteor crash.

It goes without saying that our military forces were hugely impacted by this tragedy; nearly ninety percent of our army was wiped out, along with one of our dragons, a terrible loss and truly a time of mourning and burying the dead. But with our people cured and the illness wiped out, we can now turn our attention to the meteor issue.

Six meteors landed in our landscape. A combination of scouting with our dragon and our ground forces and reports from the sylvians and tauricans places the locations of the other five meteors in rough approximation. They are indicated on the map with Red X's. It is doubtless that they are all of a similar nature, these primordial draconic colonists come to settle our world with their progeny. Something must be done, even if it is to merely secure the safety of our lands and people.

>What will we do about these landing sites? Shall we scout them out? Seek to transport the eggs home? Bury or otherwise hide them? Leave them alone for now?
>>
>>5726962
>Send out a scouting mission towards the other meteors, starting with the closest one.
>Use what's left of our scouts and volunteers.

In sending our scouts south towards the nearest meteor landing site, easy enough to locate due to the gigantic column of smoke and the wide swathes of destroyed forest, they discover that this land was the nesting grounds of gigantic birds, rocs, avians large enough to carry off cattle. Disturbed by the meteor, these creatures are in a frenzy, and attack anything that enters their territory; one of them picks up and carries off two men to certain doom.

We could utilize our dragon to fend them off, but some of these birds are even larger than our dragon currently; they are truly massive creatures and their current state of frenzy and panic due to the mass destruction brought upon their nesting grounds makes them unpredictable. There is also the fact that we now have but one dragon, and there are several of these terrifying birds.

Do we persist in our efforts to secure these eggs, use our dragon to fight the rocs, or leave the hex alone? Or something else?
>>
>>5727156
What are the chances we lose? I think we need to risk it for the reward, we should wait for the cover of night and sneak in in groups with spears, keep the birds at reach and everyone cover an angle. That should maximize sucess
>>
>>5727156
Continuing to go after this is ridiculous. We already lost more than 90 percent of our military and a dragon, let's wait until a more opportune time (or at least until the beasts have calmed down).
I'll vote for having our magicians and healers try to find signs and for us to generally recuperate.
>>
>>5727164
The eggs or young may be eaten by the time we get back, with our military so deleted it's imperative we do everything we can to replenish the ranks, people come easy especially if we use an action to promote child birth, dragons are the stop gap we need, and will only improve as we age.
>>
>>5727159
>>5727164
>>5727169
Perhaps we could have the dragon kill the rocs one by one? Im certain it could easily dispatch a bird in mid air combat with it's fire breath so if it slowly and steadily did so, it could eventually kill them all.
>>
>>5727172
Yes but take into account that the birds are already panicking. Having dragons go after them will make them go into more of a frenzy.
That and I feel like the gods will punish us for our hubris, especially since we're now talking about exterminating again.

>>5727169
>people come easy especially if we use an action to promote child birth
We don't know what events will happen or what will come to pass. What if there the rocs overpower yet another dragon and then we get invaded by orcs? We're on the verge of a potential civilizational collapse if we push ourselves further.
>>

Withdrawing from the lands of the rocs for now, we focus on acquiring eggs elsewhere, from two hexes we have explored previously: the former site of the ratfolk village, and the hex west of that, containing deposits of orichalcum and wild peas. As in ages past, transporting the eggs home is difficult and arduous, but not impossible due to their round nature and enough manpower. The dragon also provided some much-needed muscle for this task, able to carry an egg for short distances before needing a rest.

Our surviving dragon is sad, but to alleviate his pain we begin putting plans into motion to hatch more of our eggs; we currently have six unhatched, two within our curia's pool and the four we have acquired thus far.

Our civilization has grown large enough to support three player actions per age; what will they be? (We do not need to spend actions on hatching the eggs, though we will specify later how many we intend to hatch before the age is through.)

A fertility festival is held, and a heavy encouragement of large families, particularly for those surviving warriors and scouts, is put into place. Our civilization's military will recover from this blow within a generation, but for the time being, it would be best to avoid conflict. To assist us with our trouble, the sylvians send many people to live within our capital, and as a result the percentage of sylvians and half-sylvians in our capital increases this age. The festival and the time that follows is a success; our civilization grows to a population of 26,267.

In sending out an expedition to the northwest, beyond the landing site of the first dragon-meteor ages ago, we enter a land where wild cranberries grow. We do not have much of an opportunity to scout around, however, for this region is also home to wyverns; winged dragon-like reptavians with four limbs, the front two of which feature large membranous wings.

But more than that, we have a random encounter: a group of strange, obsidian-skinned, white-haired, red-eyed creatures with a feral, almost demonic and wild appearance. They are tall, with digitigrade legs and elongated claws.

Despite their frightening appearance, however, they show no signs of aggression and speak in our tongue that they mean us no harm.

How do we react to these creatures?

Their leader, the large one, explains that they are a small tribe who live in the jungle. This meteor has landed near their river that they use as their primary source of clean water. As for what they eat, while they do primarily subsist on meat that they hunt down, they also enjoy fruits and leafy greens that grow from the land; in fact the leader himself prefers some sweet fruits to most meats that they consume.

As for what they want, they came to see what all this fiery trouble was that had disturbed their territory, setting fire to great swathes of their forest home. They avoided this area for a time due to the fires and fear of what it may be, but have now come to investigate its source.

Despite the bestial appearance of the leader and his kin, there is a friendly eloquence to him, a cordial attitude that leaves a positive impression. He doesn't seem to be hiding anything from us, speaking openly and plainly. When asked if they desire the stones, the quick reply is that they do not, as it brought much devastation to their home and would be happy enough to see them removed.

In asking if they need assistance in recovering from the fires, their leader politely declines, as they managed to avoid any significant damages to their small clan. As for the land itself, it is in the wisdom of their ancestors that they find the answer to merely let it heal itself, for the ash will mix with the soil and promote new growth.

The strange and still frightening creatures assist you in dislodging the dragon eggs, happy to see them gone, and bid you farewell as you begin your journey back, rolling and dragging the eggs behind you. You part ways amicably with the creatures; they hope their descendants meet you in such a friendly manner again.

We now have a total of eight unhatched eggs, and will be putting in preparations to hatch some of them shortly.

In exploring the northeast hex of the former ratfolk village, our people discover a very strange structure, a hive of some sort, almost resembling some kind of gigantic chitinous corpse of an unknown creature. Upon further investigation, nightmarish creatures rapidly emerge from it and attack, dragging several of our men into the depths of its black tunnels to a certain doom. The monsters themselves are a horrific cross between spider and dragon, with multiple limbs, claws and a maw of man-shredding teeth.

It is unknown how long this hive has been here, but it is clear that it is growing, for observation from a long distance can see that the nightmarish animals emerge at night to drag animals and other hapless wanderers back home to nourish a growing clutch of young.

In consulting with the sylvians and our augurs, and with hefty divination rituals conducted while also ensuring that nobody goes near those lands, it is determined that these creatures are not natural. While any connection between these dragon-spiders and the meteorite eggs cannot be determined, it is clear that these creatures are not meant to be in this environment. They are breeding in large numbers and expanding unnaturally; while their true origin can only be guessed at, it is clear that these hybrids do not live in harmony with the land. While our dragons are themselves unnatural in origin, otherworldly even (extraplanar), they possess an intellect and can be brought up in intelligent society and reared properly so as to live a life in harmony with both people and the land.

These creatures, however, are not intelligent. Theirs is a feral yet cunning, malicious even, bestial form of life. Something must be done about these creatures, because soon enough there will not be one hive, but many; once it grows too large to sustain easily, they will spread outwards and create other smaller hives that will themselves grow larger. The sylvians predict that all of the land may be consumed by them if they are not culled here and now.

Yet, they are very dangerous, possessed of the ferocity of a dragon, spiked limbs like spears which are each capable of impaling a man, and with a cunning strategic mind like that of a spider. They are at their strongest in their home, crafted by them to their benefit and comfort, an alien environment to beings like ourselves, a hive of overlapping tunnels and resin-like webbing, like a dragon's lair twisted and corrupted.

What plan shall we put into place to stop this unnatural plague of hybrid monstrosities?
>>
>>5733147
I guess we should prep for total war soon. Send an envoy to the group we encountered North west to explain whats happening, and ask if they can help, or know any other groups we have not encountered yet, that might help.

Right now we should contain it, maybe send probes into the territory to check the nightmares resistance and reaction. Maybe slaughter the surrounding fauna to deprive them of food for growth while supplementing ours?
>>
>>5733147
warning the neighboring factions about the hive would be a start and it lets them know we're not just marching a huge army for no reason.

As for the tactics we should employ, Surround the hive at a large distance and use the dragons to stir them up and pick off any that break through. Heavy infantry up front with archers in the rear to soften the targets as they charge us. Once they stop pouring out then we burn the whole thing down. We should keep the area under observation in case they have burrowed too extensively underground to simply be burned out.
>>
>>5733147
Staling, or starving them out as >>5733213 suggested sounds like a good start, while I also support warning neighbors as per >>5733236 also makes sense.

Adding to that, though, lets ask any neighbours we encounter if they will help us defeat this terrible evil, for the good of all. Maybe they'll send reinforcements?
>>
>>5733147
Poison. Find out what poisons them and leave out poisoned bait.
>>
>>5733147
Right now I support telling any neighbors what we know about the hive. As for an actual plan of action, I'm not entirely sure. Poisoning them could work, but we don't know much about them to begin with. If we can get a coalition against them then that could help.

>>5733236
While I like this idea, we don't really have much of an army left to make it a reality.
>>
Set up a perimeter, burn the land with dragonfire and kill everything that moves in this hex. Arm our troops with very long lances. They are burrowing so any attempt to wall them in will only be a temporary hindrance, but this is a fearsome enemy and unless we somehow discover some glaring weakness this war can only be won by attrition.

It is clear that while there is much discussion and many suggestions, there is not much in the way of consensus. Our diviners and seers and warrior-priests bicker over conflicting divination rituals, and our depleted military is in little condition for a straight-up assault or an effective surrounding of the hive.

Our leadership turns to the guidance of our naga lord, who contemplates the situation. Finally, moved by the plight of our people and the sorry condition we are in to tackle this issue, he decides to take action personally. Using a combination of strategies proposed to maximize our odds of success, he lays a multi-faceted plan into motion.

Privately, to the trio of the Rex and his siblings, he expresses quiet regret at having to deal with the issue personally, not due to the effort it requires and a desire to be lazy, but rather because many in the civilization already worship the snake as though he were a god, and actions like this will only embolden his deity status through the power of legend as the ages go on. The Rex encourages him to use his power to save the people from this grave threat, as does his sister. It seems that the younger brother is the only one who empathizes with the naga, but neither he nor the immortal serpent are in a position to stop what must happen.

The naga has the Rex position the military to form as great a perimeter as they are able, while maneuvering the dragon into the skies to lay down a torrent of hellfire. The naga himself unleashes powerful and destructive magic upon the hive in the form of great magical fireballs, blasting it open and exposing its innards to the burning sun. The dragon circles the hive, raining fire upon its exterior.

The dragon-spiders and their young, burning and screaming in nightmarish voices, emerge and are set aflame. Those that manage to make it past the ring of flames and the blasts of the naga are set upon by the military, who use long spears and javelins in great numbers to put down the burning creatures. The hive's resin cracks from the great heat, breaking apart and exposing more areas for the naga and dragon to assault. In the work of an afternoon, with a great pillar of smoke rising to the sky, the hive is dealt with.

After the fires die down, the forces carefully and cautiously pick through the remains of the hive, stabbing anything and everything they can: egg sacks, dead monstrous corpses, charred remains of hive wall.

>>5735601

At the heart of this hive is a mysterious magical artifact, a floating orb. It hums with unnatural energy, and though its surface appears to be completely smooth and reflective, strange runes can be seen shifting and warping underneath its surface.

The naga recognizes this device, and seems mortified at it. He says that it must be destroyed, but that our civilization, and even he, lacks the power to do so. As destruction is impossible for the time being, it must be contained.

What is to be done about this mysterious artifact?
>>
>>5735602
Consult with the Snake about what we must do to destroy and contain the artifact without suffering any potential ill effects from it, and how best we can do all of those things. Take his words to heart and ensure that all the diviners, warrior-priests, from the rulers themselves to the lowliest peasant, and anyone else heed to the naga's words in regards to it.
>>
>>5735602
I say we move it to a new location and then dig far underground and build a prison to contain it, and task a small group to protect it and maintain its prison over the ages in case we forget its existence until we have the means to destroy it.

The naga explains that the orb is a product of beings that exist in realms alien to conventional understanding, eldritch creatures that exist in the extremes of the furies; the far realm, the blind eternities, the space-between-spaces, the nameless reaches. It warps and mutates anything that has prolonged contact with it, twisting them into forms more like those which crafted the orb, meaning that these creatures may well have been simple spiders or reptiles, or perhaps both, that dwelt near it and mutated or merged into these monstrosities you have put down.

Utilizing the pocket dimension we have uncovered would be a fantastic way to ensure that it doesn't come into contact with anything, for even burying it risks worms and other similar creatures to mutate into horrific versions of their former selves. However, placing it within this pocket dimension would mean that we would not be able to utilize it for food storage, for the orb will corrupt and wither all around it, its foul alien magics may even not be subject to the time-warping effect of the pocket dimension.

When asked what else can be done about the orb and if destroying it is possible, the naga once more relates that it is beyond his current power, and far beyond conventional means of destruction. Perhaps one day our society will advance in magical fields of knowledge enough to permanently end the threat this orb represents, but that day is many generations away.

Do we store the orb in the pocket dimension, barring its use as a food storage area, or do we seek some other means of sealing it away?

While there is some discussion on hatching between two and three eggs, and giving one each to the members of the royal family, the stigma of the thirdborn son wins out in the end and only two eggs are hatched, to be raised by the dynamic duo of the Rex and his sister while their sibling languishes in their shadow. Denied at every turn, spurned by society's stigma against thirdborn sons, and now forced to watch his siblings raise dragons of their own, the young man turns to even greater levels of isolation and despair. His siblings, so caught up in the wonder of raising their own dragons, do not even notice his pain.

Perhaps the one person who would listen to him is the naga, but he isn't allowed to go and see him due to the fervent belief that a thirdborn son shouldn't be alone with the snake lord as it would be a bad omen. The young man silently laments that if they are going to forever treat him this way, then he may as well remove himself from their presence.

And so, one day, the thirdborn son flees the civilization, and is barely noticed to be missing until a day later. By then he is already far on his way south, his feet carrying a wounded heart towards an unknown destination.

Little does he know that despite his thoughts and feelings of being alone and nobody noticing or hearing him, he is being drawn towards someone who has been watching him very closely. This person calls out to him in his dreams, whispering subtle things in his ears on the wind. He doesn't even know it, but he is being lured to a very specific location. The newly-discovered ruins outside of Taurica have been untouched, for people fear a dark energy rests within that place. The thirdborn son of the ruling dynasty follows the subconscious voice that has been calling him to this place, though he knows not why.

He makes his way into the ruins, slowly becoming aware that someone is calling out to him. He grows more and more conscious of the voice that cries out for his help, the wailing of a trapped woman that only he can save.
>>
>>5738525

In the heart of these ruins he discovers a chamber with a grand and ancient stone altar, its surface scarred and ruined by countless ages of neglect. Yet upon this altar, chained with rusted bonds, is a beautiful woman, her flesh supple and untouched by the time this place has been abandoned. She is like a goddess to him, with lustrous black hair, dark grey skin, and burning green eyes that pierce through the darkness with intense focus, searing straight to his soul and etching a permanent place within it.

Her voice is like music to his ears. She says that everything that has happened to him is wrong; he did nothing wrong. When his voice raised suggestions, others shot them down. When he should have been praised or part of the glory, he was forgotten. These injustices and cruel apathy he has garnered have sorely wounded her just as surely as they have him. She says she knows how he feels, to be forgotten and abandoned, with no one to understand, to speak to---to love. He deserves so much more than what society has forced upon him due to the circumstances of his birth, a thing which he couldn't control. Why do they neglect and fear him so, just because his parents decided to have a third child that happened to be male?

Her words are what he has wanted to hear his entire life. He rushes to her and hurriedly works to free her, picking up stones and bashing the chains until his hands bleed. When they shrug off of her perfect form, she embraces him, softly stroking his hair and comforting him, whispering honeyed words into his ears. She thanks him for freeing her, for now they can be together. She lays him down upon the altar and lavishes attention upon him, bringing him pleasures unknown to mortal men with her flawless body, ensuring that he will forever remain her loving savior---and devoted servant.

When the seers and warrior-priests finally learn through divination where the thirdborn son has gone, his two siblings and their retainers scour the ruins. Wolf scouts and dragons comb the region for miles, but there is no sign of him. He, and his mysterious lover, are gone.

What becomes of them will only be known in the future, for they are not seen again this age.

Holy crap our tech advancement is so slow.
>>
>>5738526
>Art (Leads to Astrology, Proto-Writing, Numerals, and Pottery) (Culture Boost)
Dammit why the fuck did people want two dragons instead of three? Now we have a potential future problem.
>>
>>5738527
>>Advanced Foraging (Leads to Pathfinding, and Early Medicine) (Food Boost)
This leads to pathfinding which doubles the amount of tiles explored for every action, thus doubling the potential resources and awesome things we could find each age.

Also lol neglect arc has come to a close. sad people didn't like my idea enough : \

Isn't everything decided by RNG?

Medicine would have come in handy, I imagine it will again

For sake of transparency, when the hex alongside Taurica was generated at the very start of this age, with the ruins containing a bound entity, I rolled dice to determine how it would affect the civ this age, eventually ending up with the involvement with the thirdborn son. However, I'm very much a "nothing is set in stone" kind of guy, and am usually constantly rolling dice to see if things continue down the initial path.
When the suggestion to give each child of the royal line a dragon came up, I rolled and determined it would avoid the initial fate that was set for him (to be lured to the ruins); he would've happily raised his dragon and become truly one of the family. However, when the result became tied between two and three, I made one final roll to see if the curse of the thirdborn would come back, and it did, thus sealing his fate.

We might've been able to get things done better with a third dragon...

Christ I wish I'd been awake for the vote, that would've been nice to have royalty become the dragon riders and the curse to be broken.

I legitimately cannot understand the reasoning for why the other anon's idea didn't get support from the majority. There was no reason why the we couldn't of let the third son at least try to fight against fate and make things better, and we would've gotten another dragon on top of that.
Did people just want the civ to have more problems for drama? Just a lack of foresight?
>>
>>5738589
I can say for myself that I just feared three dragons at once would be too hard to control. I never even considered the third son could act like he did.
>>
>>5738590
That's fair. although I think even without the three siblings we could've handled it.
In the end I should've said that the third son was getting neglected too much and this would've done him good.

Overall it's just something to keep in mind for the next ages. In retrospect, QM kept dropping hints that the Thirdborn was suffering. Now we know that NPCs can actually act of their own initiative, and not always to the benefit of us anons
>>
>>5738602
Agreed.
But it's still a lost opportunity to not have all the royals as dragon riders, that just sounds badass.
>>
So far it's three for Advanced Foraging over two for Art. I'll leave it up a while longer for any additional votes before I call it.

I'd have switched votes myself, but between sleep and work, well here we are

>>5738527
>Animal Husbandry (Leads to Trapping, Aquatic Husbandry, Chariotry, Riding, and Falconry) (Animal Boost)

I really want us to double down on the animal stuff first
>>
>>5738527
>Art (Leads to Astrology, Proto-Writing, Numerals, and Pottery) (Culture Boost)

Also, solid arc. Spooky! Interested to see where it goes. Hopefully not to our doom
>>
I meant to call it yesterday, but got distracted and pulled away. Advanced Foraging was in the lead for a significantly longer amount of time, I know >>5741313 just voted but I'm calling it for Advanced Foraging, giving our civilization a permanent food boost.

That will officially bring a close to this, our 12th Age.
