THE GALAXY IS IN TURMOIL. Chancellor Palpatine is DEAD. The JEDI COUNCIL, after discovering the Supreme Chancellor was a secret Sith lord, attempted to arrest him for HIGH TREASON. In the aftermath, three of the four jedi masters sent to arrest him were killed, along with the Chancellor himself.

The young General ANAKIN SKYWALKER, hero of the Outer Rim Sieges, has denounced the actions of the Jedi and ordered the execution of ORDER 66, accusing the JEDI COUNCIL of plotting to overthrow the Chancellor and the Republic.

In response, the Jedi under the leadership of MACE WINDU have implemented ORDER 65, placing the GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC under the command of Acting Chancellor Organa, amidst accusations that General Skywalker has taken up arms against THE REPUBLIC itself.

Before the war between the REPUBLIC and SEPERATIST ALLIANCE is over, a new conflict looms…

Hello, and welcome to Star Wars: The End of the Republic! An alternate timeline where Chancellor Palpatine was killed and the Clone Wars would continue, pitting brother against brother, clone against clone. You will be in command of a clone battalion during these troubled times, doing your best to find your way in the galaxy, perhaps fighting for one side or choosing your own and blazing a path of freedom. No matter what happens, the galaxy will be more divided than it ever has been before, and danger and opportunity lurk in equal measure. Will you find victory, or will you tragically fall amongst so many others in a conflict that will tear the galaxy apart?

First, your character. You are commander…

>Knox, a shiny fresh from Kamino. You’re inexperienced, but that only means you’ve got everything to prove. However, the war looks like it’s already drawing to a close and you wonder if it’s too late to win any last victories against the enemies of The Republic…
>Jodo, a typical trooper in the Grand Army of the Republic. You’re not sure how to feel about the war. Without it you wouldn’t exist, but all you’ve known is the life of a soldier. You’re not sure what will happen once you’re no longer needed by The Republic…
>Sulla, a Geonosis veteran. You’ve seen and done it all, but the war has taken its toll on you and your men. If it weren’t for the fact nobody knows what will happen to you clones, you’d only want this long war to be over. At least it seems like the Separatists are finally on the road to defeat…
>Write in (This vote is mainly for your personality, it won’t significantly impact any stats)

You are a battalion commander, commanding officer (CO) of 4 companies, with the whole battalion part of the 451st Regiment, under Commander Fabian, a Geonosis veteran and extremely competent officer. But how did you get to your position?
>Trained from birth as an officer. You were born to lead your brothers, take care of them, and bring them to victory. With your rank and experience, you have been given command of 1 specialised company; list will be given at battalion creation, if selected. However, it will be more difficult to resupply this company, and losses will hit them hard.
>Rose through the ranks. While you were originally a humble trooper, your performance in your first battle caught the eye of your superiors, and you’ve now advanced to battalion commander. Your troops are completely loyal, but you may be looked down upon by the other officers and republic officials.
>An ARC Trooper. Due to the losses suffered during the war, you’ve been assigned to the battalion as commander, despite not receiving the formal training for it. A veritable one-man army, you almost don’t need a HQ company, but your lack of proper strategic skills will mean your other companies will suffer.

Commander Sulla risen through the ranks confirmed!

Next, the Battalion itself.

Please read through the full set of posts before voting. There will be a lot to take in here. If you have any questions, I'll be around for the next half hour, but the next update will come in ~12 hours.

As battalion commander, you are in charge of 4 companies of about 250 troops each. Each company will have a different specialisation, with different advantages and weaknesses. You must select from the list of templates below what kind of battalion you are. You must also select your HQ company specialisation. This will be the company you are embedded with, and the one in charge of protecting you. Certain battalions will have restrictions on the HQ they can use, e.g a siege battalion cannot have an airborne HQ company. Use common sense when selecting a HQ.

But first, the experience of the Battalion.

Battalion Experience.

>Shinies: Your men are fresh from Kamino, and thus the battalion is oversized. Pick 1 extra company of your choosing at battalion creation. Your men are no match for battle-hardened troops though, and if you push them too far…
>Battle-Hardened – Your men have been in enough combat to know their way around. They won’t suffer any issues of morale or combat capability, though most won’t be willing to go the full way to winning a battle against brothers.
>Veterans. Your troops will perform better in combat, fight longer and harder, but after 3 years of non-stop war they have become… tired. Many of them are looking forward to the expected defeat of the separatists.

Company Designations

HQ Company – Select ONE from the following list. This is also a useful source for how companies work. You should read through this carefully before making a decision on the battalion formation.

Infantry Company – The most common and basic company in the GAR. No major strengths or weaknesses, able to perform almost any task needed.

Heavy Weapons Company – Anti-tank and anti-air. They will suffer against regular infantry and other skirmish units.

Armoured Company – AT-TE Tanks. Heavily armoured but slow, their firepower is only beaten by siege units. They also come with a complement of supporting infantry, though not enough to make a company of their own.

Mechanised Company – Meant for rapid assault, these A5 Juggernaut units are lightly armed and armoured, but can cross the battlefield with rapidity, deploying infantry much faster than usual.

AT-RT Company – Small one-man walkers, perfect for scouting and skirmishing, but vulnerable to concentrated attack. Much more mobile than regular infantry.

BARC Speeder Company – The fastest company available, excepting airborne. Excellent for reconnaissance, they are extremely vulnerable, though they can skirmish, if needed. Half the size of a regular company.

Airborne Company – Infantry deployed anywhere on the battlefield by LAAT/i gunships. Extremely quick, but extremely vulnerable to anti-air. Even one lost gunship is an entire squad gone.

Siege Company – Self-Propelled Artillery. The slowest company of all, but they can rain down death from almost any position. They are also extremely vulnerable to attack, and need constant protection
.
Engineer Company – Experts in fortifications, and tearing them down. They can help set up forward operating bases, trenches, and anything else needed to protect and house your men, or tear down those of the enemy.

Next, your subordinates. These are the men you will be commanding directly, and you have a responsibility to each of them and all their men.

Once the battalion has been designated and selected, you must pick 3 to be heads of your regular companies (make sure to assign each one), and one who will be your major. The battalion major will be the commander of your HQ company and your second-in-command (2IC).

>Captain Rollo
- Has somehow perfected manoeuvring, his company will always be in position no matter the terrain.
- Administers harsh discipline, some say to an excessive level.

>Captain Joyce
- Geonosis veteran, is capable of leading any unit with distinction.
- Extremely hesitant to risk his troops.

>Captain Beck
- Loyal and dependable, will ensure your commands are carried out.
- Inflexible commander, will carry out orders to a fault.

>Captain Caulk
- Somehow is able to keep his unit supplied no matter the environment or location. Black market connections?
- Doesn’t work well with others, prone to provoking rivalries with other commanders and units.

>Captain Goto
- Excellent diplomat, he’s able to stall the enemy with talk and has sometimes induced a surrender.
- Strong moral compass, will often prioritise it over the mission.

>Captain Loge
- Creative, comes up with novel strategies on the go.
- Disobedient, often ignores orders and pursues his own objectives.

>Captain Thier
- Heroic, an example to the troops. They won’t break when he’s in charge.
- Overambitious, will often pursue an objective without waiting for support.

>Captain Boxer
- An ARC trooper, unmatched in CQB. It’d take a jedi to kill him.
- Advocates completing the mission at all costs, often pursues strategically sound but morally questionable methods.

You will not be voting on company commanders just yet. That will come once the battalion has been decided. I'm putting the list here so you can figure out beforehand who should go where.

i just like big guns. This basically forces the enemy to say goodbye to their troops/fortifications/production capabilities etc. Unless they approach our fortified position, which they’d bleed excessively on. The weakness of this Battalion is that it isn’t very maneuverable, which might present issues if we encounter mobile enemy units without other battalions. Caulk is almost necessary for this kind of battalion, since we’re dependent on being able to sling as many shells on the enemy as feasibly possible, which can only be done with secure supply lines. Joyce is just generally good, and we’re unlikely to suffer immense casualties in a fortified position leading our infantry.

Alright, looks like it's a tie between an Attack, Siege, an Engineer battalion. A shiny 165th battalion seems to be the decision, with an extra infantry company. HQ is also divided between Engineers and Armoured. Going to need a tiebreaker.

Don't worry, I don't plan on you being stuck behind the lines the whole time, or staying as a humble siege battalion until you die. Cato Neimoidia. One of the Separatist strongholds near the core, it’s been a thorn in the side of The Republic since the beginning of the war, but now Command has finally begun the task of capturing the planet, home of Nute Gunray, one of the Separatist council’s most senior members. While the initial assault by Generals Kenobi and Skywalker had dealt a mortal blow to the planet’s defences, several of the bridge cities are still resisting, though it’s only a matter of time before your forces declare total victory on the planet.

The 451st Regiment is preparing itself for an assault on one, though Commander Fabian is still in the planning stages with the other regimental commanders. Resistance is so scattered on the planet you could probably turn up in force and induce a surrender, but you’ve heard the Chancellor wants the treasure vaults of the Neimoidians secured, and it’s near certain that that’s where most of the remaining separatists are going to be.

As such, you’ve decided to put your troops through some simulations while you wait for your next orders, 2 Companies vs 2 Companies. And with the shinies, they need all the training they can get before they enter a real battle. Of course, the droids act more predictable than clones, and the average clone is worth several droids, but it paid to be the best you could be. It was good training for the men, and if they could take on companies of clones without trouble, then droids wouldn’t be a problem.

And, if you were honest with yourself, you worried for them. A batch of shinies fresh from Kamino, they’d yet to test themselves in a real battle. You’d been fighting since the war had begun on Geonosis, but all they’d ever had was simulations and training. Nothing could make up for the real thing. Still, you and your subordinates did your best, and you could only hope that they’d perform as well as any other unit. Even so, casualties in battle are all but guaranteed, and you can’t help but feel trepidation at the inevitable losses they’ll suffer against the droids.

You turn your mind away from the battles ahead to the battle before you. It’s a simple enough procedure. You’ve divided your forces into two, though Captain Boxer and his infantry company will sit it out, to keep things fair. He’s probably putting Company E through his own extreme training regime anyway. ARC Troopers don’t tolerate sloppiness.

It’s a simple game of capture the flag. You and your men are at FOB Alpha, little more than the transports used to carry you here, your opposing forces are in FOB Beta, and each FOB holds a specially marked crate that must be captured by the opposing team and brought back to their own FOB. There’s several options available to both sides. You can send all your forces out and mount an assault on the enemy FOB, keep them here and wait for them to come to you, or split them and have one company on defence, the other on attack.
What are your orders?
>Send the two companies out to attack. It risks the enemy taking your “flag” while you’re away, but if you can eliminate their FOB first it won’t matter.
>Keep everyone at FOB Alpha and lie in wait.
>Split your forces, one attacks the enemy, the other waits for them. (Which unit will you send out?)
>Write in.

You turn from the holotable you’re using to plan the battle and address Major Beck and Captain…

>Beck, Joyce. We’ll be staying put. If I know Goto, he’ll throw everything he has at us, better to lie in wait and fortify the position then go out to meet him. Prep the men.

“Sir yes sir!” They each shout in unison.

You watch them as they go to their respective companies and begin organising the defence. The artillery will deploy and be ready to fire upon the enemy as soon as you know where they are, while the engineers will begin creating basic fortifications around the FOB, giving you more cover for when the attack inevitably comes. In normal combat you’d have the infantry company here for defence, or a little forward to hold off the enemy while the artillery does it’s job, but in this simulation you’ll have to work without any extra support. Then again, so will your opponents. Besides, it’s good to prepare for worst case scenarios, ensures the men know what to do and won’t panic or make stupid mistakes.

I’m assuming that you’ll want the engineers to create fortifications; this will normally be one of several options during combat but for this little preview I’m streamlining things a bit.

You look at the tactical map while you wait. A river runs through the middle of the battlefield, but beyond that there isn’t much of interest. A hill to the North-East, a forest to the East, and beyond that a destroyed Separatist factory. You wonder from where the attack might come from. You should have an advantage due to your defensive position, but the enemy will have the initiative in their attack, meaning that you must defend from their attack before you can properly return fire.

It's not long before you get a communication from Major Beck. The enemy is here! The engineers are mounting an assault, and artillery is “landing” near you, though the only sign of any hits are visuals transmitted to your helmets. You do not have any eyes on the enemy’s artillery, since they’re set up out of sight range, but you hope you’ll be able to defeat this engineer company and defeat the artillery with your full forces.

Roll 2d100 to beat my roll. Bo3. +10 due to fortifications, -10 due to shinies, so no modifier.

You watch from a safe distance as combat breaks out across the FOB. Thanks to the fortifications built by the engineers, there’s plenty of cover for your men, though they won’t do much against a dedicated assault with real combat. Stun blasts fly through the air, hitting both sides, while you see simulated artillery blasts appear intermittently through your helmet display. Looks like their artillery is having difficulty getting a lock on your position. Damn. You’ll have to drill them on that once this sim is over.

The men under Beck and Joyce’s command are doing well though, keeping well in cover and minimising casualties. Some are even going out to drag stunned troopers back to “treat” them. You feel some small stirrings of pride in you as you watch them work. They’re shinies, but they’re doing well. As you watch further you notice a lull in the attack, and that’s when Joyce opens up with his artillery. “Blasts” appear in the middle of the engineers attacking, and Beck orders his men to counterattack, jumping out of cover to lay down a stream of stun blasts towards the enemy.

To their credit, the engineer’s quickly force Beck’s men back into cover, but with the artillery firing so accurately the battle is all but over. More and more men pause and throw down their weapons as the “artillery fire” lands around them. Soon enough, attack by the engineer company is defeated. They must be down to only a few squads at this point. The artillery also begins to let up too, as without eyes on your position to confirm hits and direct the fire, there’s no way for them to know where you are. You begin walking over to Major Beck and Captain Joyce as they discuss the results of the attack. You also notice Captain Goto walking over. He must have been a casualty from one of the artillery blasts.

>Good work boys. You too, Goto.

“Thank you, sir. Was a tough position to assault.”

Further chat is interrupted by an incoming transmission on the commlink.

“We surrender.”

>Droids can’t do that Loge. They fight until they’re deactivated.

“Well, we’re clones. We can make our own decisions, can’t we?”

Joyce and Beck just shake their heads as Goto starts laughing. “You think he knows he’s supposed to be a clanker, not a clone?”

You shake your head.

>Fine. An artillery company on it’s own isn’t going to last long anyway. Head back here for debrief, we’ll clean up then go back to the regiment.

In reply, Loge sends a simple “Roger roger.” before ending the transmission.
>>
>>5743819

Soon enough all the captains of the 165th are assembled again, including Boxer. They’re standing around a holotable displaying the battle, waiting for you to begin the debrief.

>Good work today men. While the mission itself may have been different from real combat, it’s good to prepare for anything. Loge, Goto, it was a good move to assault our position, just bad luck that the artillery was ineffective. Loge, you need to focus on that, drill them as much as you can. We can’t have inaccurate artillery fire in this company, got it? I’ll also overlook your “surrender” this time, but do not do it again. Goto, bad luck for you that you got caught in our counterfire. You might have been able to pull out and keep on directing their fire, or set a trap near the river or destroyed seppie position, but not if your command and company are gone. Beck, Joyce, not much to say, you did a good job. The men are feeling good after their win?

“Yes sir.”

>Good. Emphasise that, keep their morale topped up. All in all, it was a good exercise. They’re still shinies, but they should do well when it comes to combat. I don’t have much else to add. Boxer?

“Nothing, sir. I’m satisfied with the performance of my men.”

Excellent. Satisfaction coming from an ARC trooper is high praise. You’ve seen enough in action to tell they’re no-nonsense, even more so than the rest of the clones.

>All right, I think that will be all. Give the men a break for now, then we’ll resume training until we get the word from Commander Fabian. Dismissed.

In unison the men salute and give you a “Sir, yes sir!” before leaving the tent and returning to their units. Major Beck stays with you, since you generally share command facilities unless he’s leading the men in the field. Before you can say anything to him however, your holotransceiver buzzes. The comms console also chimes with the sound of an incoming message. Strange. You pull the holotransceiver from your belt and activate it. Before you stands the glowing image of General Anakin Skywalker.

This is General Anakin Skywalker, to all clone commanders of the Grand Army. The Jedi council have assassinated the Chancellor. Execute Order 66. Any soldier who does not comply will be committing treason. Further orders to follow.

The message shuts off. Silence fills the tent. You’re still a moment, before moving to the comms console. The same message. Priority 0. The highest. Codes confirming direct from the Chancellor. Going out to the entire Grand Army of the Republic.

You’ve glanced at the screen and scanned through the information in only a moment when your transceiver buzzes again and a new message is received on the console. You send it to the holotable and watch with Major Beck. Neither of you have said a word.

It’s Senator Bail Organa. He hesitates a moment, before beginning.

This is Acting Chancellor Organa. Supreme Chancellor Palpatine is no longer commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. Order 65 has been put into effect. All communications from the Chancellor’s office must be ignored. All orders calling for the arrest or execution of members of the jedi order must be countermanded. The Grand Army’s allegiance is to the Republic, not the Chancellor. I… I hope this is not too late.

The transmission shuts off. You check the codes. The same as the last one, but this time coming from the Security Council instead of the Chancellor. You look to Major Beck. There are no jedi here. According to protocol, there should be a jedi commander leading the regiment and each battalion, but losses have made that impractical, and the jedi commander assigned to the regiment died several months ago. You had yet to receive a replacement. You do know that there are several jedi on planet though, leading the troops in the final push to conquer it.

“Orders sir?”

Major Beck’s face is calm.

if the inhibitor chips were canon in this quest we would have to listen to organa. Skywalker doesn't have the authority to issue any of the 150 general orders because he's only a general.

only the Supreme Chancellor (who can't give orders because he's dead) and the Republic Security Council are allowed to issue any of the 150 general orders. so the highest authority would be Acting Chancellor Organa so she MIGHT be able to issue them.

Skywalker has access to the Chancellor's command codes, which is what allowed him to issue the Order in the first place. Nobody else is physically able to issue commands to the entire Grand Army of the Republic like that. Essentially, he's making them in the name of the Chancellor. Furthermore, Organa has not denied that the Jedi have assassinated the Chancellor. The entire Grand Army has just received two completely contradictory orders from two (seemingly) equal authorities. It's not going to be just Anakin and the 501st implementing Order 66.

>>5743904
You're only a battalion commander, you don't have the authority to make that call. In fact, you're not sure who does. The Jedi generals are nominally in charge of the campaign, but they've just been declared traitors requiring execution. The next in the line of succession would be your division commander, but there are several divisions assaulting the planet and you don't know who has total command over them all.

Difficult choice for clones for many reasons, friendships made through the war, their military service and the fact they don't have much representation and rights in the Republic despite being the main army/navy.
On one hand Anakin is basically the war hero of the Republic, and usually well liked/respected by the GAR, beloved/trusted by the 501st, with usually a good rep for the rest of the republic military (humans in the navy, human officers, military instructors ecc..). And lastly a great public image created by his many successfull missions/campaigns in many worlds, and expanded upon by republic propaganda and Palpatine himself in public speeches.

On the other hand Organa is a decent enough senator, less involved with the corruption in the senate and his party had actually some senators with a program for clones after the war if i am not mistaken. Some clones must have look time to time at the political changes done by Palpatine during the war (and before), and he took away/replaced a lot of laws slowly but surely. The republic from the start of the war to now with the battle of Utapau having claimed Grevious life, is a completely different creature.

Coruscant is probably a war zone again, i expect the Coruscant Guard to be fully behind Anakin unless Fox is not the only one commanding it or if he was killed by Windu and the other jedi masters while fighting Palpatine.
I wonder what Cody will go for, because the one giving him the first command is Anakin which is kind of funny.

Clones have also no ideas on many questions they have for their future, and the republic was vague or didn't provide answers.
Like : What happens to us after the war ? Will clones remain in the GAR ? There will be new clone generations ? What we get at the end of our military service ? Can we go and settle on a republic planet of our choice (like the planets that look at them like saviors, and were they fought tooth and nail for) ?

You sigh, and close your eyes. In all your years of serving the Republic, you had never expected… this. Defeat to the separatists was a real possibility, one that had been in the mind of all clones during the early years of the war as they fought and died across the galaxy, but the Republic turning against itself… There were no contingencies. No fallbacks. This was totally uncharted territory you were heading into. And across the galaxy, clone commanders like you would be making their decisions, declaring the righteousness of General Skywalker or Chancellor Organa, executing their jedi generals, declaring those who did or didn’t traitors, maybe even…

>Call the men back in. I want their opinions before we make a move.

“Very well, sir. I’ll go get them immediately.”

Major Beck leaves the tent, leaving you alone with your thoughts.

You open your eyes again.

The holotable glows dimly in front of you. The canvas of the tent flaps gently as a breeze passes by, and outside you can hear the men moving about, relaxing and joking with each other as they wait for your next command. Unaware of what has just happened. Unaware that their first taste of combat might not be against droids but against…

You’re tempted to replay the messages again, but you have already committed them to memory. You’ll have to play them for the captains when they come in anyway.
You feel a mix of emotions swirl within you. Fear. Excitement. Hesitance. Strange. You’re old, for a clone. You should have learned to master your emotions by now, keep a lid on them so you perform to your fullest in battle. But now you can’t help but experience all the same feelings you had in those dropships as they flew over the rocky wastes of Geonosis, so long ago. Your first battle. The first time your brothers had died around you, when your training had kicked in and you’d fought for all you were worth, earning the commendation that would put you on the track for leadership. So long ago now. You can feel those same emotions now, but changed. Tighter. Closer. Maybe you’re just getting old.

Major Beck returns with the men you’d sent out only a few minutes before, and you straighten up and banish all unnecessary thoughts from your mind.
>>
>>5744474

>Men. I’m glad you’re here. We have an emergency on our hands. I want you to watch the following messages, and tell me what you think.

You press a button on the holotable and replay the messages. First General Skywalker’s. Then Chancellor Organa’s. They watch without saying a word. Even after it’s over, they remain silent. Shock clearly visible on some. Captain Boxer is as impassive as ever.

>Men?

Major Beck speaks first. Always one to follow orders.

“We have to choose between them, sir. It’s as simple as that. We’ve been given commands, we can’t follow both, so we have to obey one and disobey the other.” And live with our choices, he leaves unsaid.

“No, we can’t.” Captain Joyce this time. A fellow Geonosis veteran, though you didn’t know each other at the time. “The Republic, the Grand Army, will tear itself apart. We declare now and we paint a target on our backs, and I don’t want that. Not when we don’t know who’s friend or foe. And the men… they’re shinies, Sulla. They’ve never fought a real enemy before. They’re not ready.” On that, you can agree. The forces on this planet are a mix of veterans and fresh reinforcements. Your men won’t stand a chance against an experienced force. Presuming the enemy will be as heartless as the droids.

Captain Goto speaks up next. “We should talk with Commander Fabian first. He’s our regimental CO after all. And see if we can’t find out what the other battalions are doing. We need to communicate first. Joyce is right, we shouldn’t declare for either side only to find out the rest are against us, we’re only a siege battalion after all. But, sir, I think Organa seems to be the better choice. I think you should go for him, sir, when you do make a decision.”

>Thank you Goto. Loge?

“Sir? I… I don’t know, sir. I can’t tell which side is the better. If the jedi have assassinated the Chancellor… But Acting Chancellor Organa has countermanded any reprisals against the Jedi. General Skywalker is one of the most decorated officers in all the Republic though, and a jedi himself. And he was close to the Chancellor.” Loge is silent a moment, before taking a deep breath. “Sir, I cannot make any recommendations at this time, sir.” Nervous then. You don’t blame him.

>Very well. Thank you, nonetheless, Loge.
>>
>>5744475

You then look at Captain Boxer. The ARC Trooper. He hasn’t said a word yet. Out of all of you, he should be the most independent and free thinking. ARC Troopers are trained that way, for greater success in their mission, but you don’t know the precise details of that training or how free and independent they really are. A lot of Boxer’s service record is classified anyway.

He looks around the room, at each of your captains before speaking. “Whatever choice you make, sir, we will support. You are our commanding officer. There is no right decision to be made here. It’s a bad position for everyone.”

Surprisingly neutral. Not even acknowledging the sides present. You think a moment. They’ve given their advice, now you have to make a decision. But as you open your mouth the comms console beeps with a new message, and you quickly hurry over to it.

It’s an urgent comms ping from Commander Fabian. Just a recording. You open it and watch him appear on the holotable.

“Commander Sulla. Return to base immediately. Do not, I repeat, do not announce allegiance to General Skywalker or Organa. Those are your orders. Additionally, I am announcing new Rules of Engagement for all units under my command: Do not fire unless fired upon. Fabian out.”

You look back at the men.

>Dismissed, for now. But prepare the men for departure, as soon as they are able.

They all give you a salute, before leaving the tent to you and Major Beck. He immediately puts his helmet on and starts ordering the platoons under his command, leaving you to the comms console. As you tap through it, you notice several planet wide transmissions have also been received. Urgent requests for assistance, declarations supporting both Skywalker and Organa, orders to arrest all declaring themselves for Skywalker or Organa, etc. Filtering through, you come across what you’re looking for. Assembly zones for forces loyal to Skywalker or Organa are being assembled across the planet. And commands for all Republic forces to redeploy there. The first moves are being made. You’re too far away to make it too any on foot, but you could request transport to the sites. It’ll be dangerous though, and you have a feeling that Commander Fabian’s ROE might not be planet-wide. What will you do?

>Return to Commander Fabian. Orders are orders, and he is your CO.
>Declare for one side (which?) and return to Commander Fabian. You can’t remain neutral.

It seems like that's what the 165th might become. We might see new units, technology, and tactics develop as the war progresses. Anakin's youngling episode doesn't happen in this timeline, so force users may be present on both sides of the conflict. This might compel Clones to train soldiers specializing in CQC, countering force users, and possibly handling whatever esoteric technology might be floating out there. The million dollar question, however, is how Anakin would fulfill his prophesy now.

Anakin was already leaning dark when the jedi assasination happened, but even during the fight against palpatine he was still hesitating - he's literally the one who snitched on sidious.

It wasnt until palpatine reminded him he was the one with darth plagueis' knowledge. If palpatine isnt there to order him while dangling padme, anakin is more likely to try to arrest the younglings than he is to kill them.

Overall, i expect Dark Jedi anakin to be very different from Vader. Even on mustafar he was still saying stuff like "MY empire", he was obviously planning on ganking sidious after padme was safe.

There is no way Fabian can just sit it out, the planet looks it will become a war zone right about now. Perhaps he is tricking one side and he already decided who to join. Thats a suprise of his own.
>orders to arrest all declaring themselves for Skywalker or Organa
This will be ugly really soon, not sure I want a neutral route. I prefer the conflict of one side.
Pretty much asking for be put down and become worse than galaxy scum, ain't no way you have supplies and this is too big for most parties, states and factions of the galaxy to remain neutral. The Hutt or galaxy borders could be neutral maybe, then again Anakin despises slavers and criminals.
Also the Delegation of 2,000 happened, which is a big deal because those people wanted Palpatine to leave his seat after the war end and give back his special powers, while also making peace with what remained of the Confederacy. They are definetly supporting Organa.
The numbers of worlds that will support Anakin will be also high, and he is the kind of leader that many would follow. His opinion on clones has always been the opposite of Palpatine, and he now has the power for give them whatever they want.

>Declare for one side (Skywalker) and return to Commander Fabian. You can’t remain neutral.
I ll be honest, i want to see both of the two sides. But Anakin side is still interesting. I wonder if the two factions will change their symbols, or keep the republic symbol with new colors under it.
>>
>>5744796
>The numbers of worlds that will support Anakin will be also high, and he is the kind of leader that many would follow
Well, when it comes to support, i think it will have a pretty clear split. For one, it's most likely that the majority of the navy will support Anakin - since a lot of the admirals and commanders of the navy were *not* clones, they were humans. And there was, from what i know, a general tendency of these admirals to be much more pro-war, and later pro-empire than, let's say, clones, who could have split pretty wildly depending on how their experiences were. For example, on Anakin's side you're obviously going to have Tarkin, and with him comes the entirety of Eriadu and their satellites.

But it should also not be forgotten that the separatists are still around - without anakin to slaughter the council on Mustafar and send the shutdown code, you still have untold trillions of droids in the outer rim, and corporations like the Techno Union, Corporate Alliance and Trade Federation still have their leaders, and my guess is that Organa will probably offer them a peace treaty and a pardon so they can work against Anakin, who obviously won't accept any such peace from the separatist remnants.

>Like he arrested the sand people's children?
The sand people killed his mother. The entire reason he killed the younglings was because Palpatine told him to do it, and he had the knowledge of how to 'save padme'
>>
>>5744689
I'm really eager to find out what happens to the Separatists now that Palpatine is gone...
>>
>>5744795
>I'd argue he'd be worse than Vader, he's got nothing.
As the other anon pointed out, he was already plotting against Palpatine by the time he fought Obi-Wan on Mustafar. It was also Palpatine that ordered Anakin to conduct the massacre at the Jedi Temple, as the former was a Sith lord specifically and he wanted to make sure there were no Jedi to oppose him specifically nor finish the job for Mace Windu. Depending on how much time there was between the Chancellor's death and Order 66 in this timeline which he probably spent scrounging his platform against Jedi Temple leadership, Anakin may have used the unique position he has in this scenario to stoke divisions among the Jedi, many around his generation or younger. Besides, resentful Jedi are far more useful than Tusken Raiders, and Anakin is smart enough to recognize he'll have to muster as much support he can get with plans to rule himself.
>>
>>5744823
This, even during Palpatine's purge, some jedi were still allowed to live if they betrayed the order to use them as inquisitors. And palpatine didn't just kill the jedi because he wanted all threats gone, he did it because he was a sith, which is in itself basically a creed.

Anakin, in this timeline, is not a *sith*. With palpatine dead, the sith have been destroyed. The only sith left alive is, arguably, Maul. Anakin is a Dark Jedi. He's on the dark side, for sure, but he doesn't have the Sith Creed - at least for now.

Whether he finds some sith holocrons and becomes a darth by himself is up to the question, but right now? He's not a sith.

They've just killed his wife, in his eyes anyway, and he let them do it. He's going full edgelord.

>>5744823
>As the other anon pointed out, he was already plotting against Palpatine by the time he fought Obi-Wan on Mustafar.
Because he wanted power. Not because he's a nice guy.
>It was also Palpatine that ordered Anakin to conduct the massacre at the Jedi Temple
He's be much more wrathful in this sort of fanfiction due to the Jedi killing the only chance for his wife to live. What would make it even more bitter for him is that he had a chance to save his wife but took it too late. I think this will make his hatred towards the Jedi more personal and intense.
>Depending on how much time there was between the Chancellor's death and Order 66 in this timeline which he probably spent scrounging his platform against Jedi Temple leadership
No idea whats happing on coruscant, if I had to guess the people are rising up against the Jedi. Remember Palp is loved and the Jedi have fallen out of favour with the galactic population. The Jedi are going to struggle to find allies in a war across the stars, maybe ironically the seperatists.
>>

Is padme even dead yet? That didn't happen until after mustafar.

No, but that's fun. Either she will watch him become a monster, possibly meaning he might have to keep her on house arrest, which is an interesting dynamic or join him hating the Jedi, which I think would be more boring.
>>
>>5744832
>Not because he's a nice guy.
No one here is implying he is at this point.

>He's be much more wrathful in this sort of fanfiction due to the Jedi killing the only chance for his wife to live. What would make it even more bitter for him is that he had a chance to save his wife but took it too late. I think this will make his hatred towards the Jedi more personal and intense.
If anything, he'd blame the Jedi Council for it, which he recognizes to have different perspectives or priorities from some other Jedi. There's also a possibility that his visions have changed, but regardless, Anakin likely recognizes force users are too powerful of an asset to throw away. Even in the original timeline, there were Inquisitors.

>if I had to guess the people are rising up against the Jedi. Remember Palp is loved and the Jedi have fallen out of favour with the galactic population
This could be another angle from which he may sway Jedi to his side if resent, ambition, or curiosity fail. Doubt in one's self and the organization they work for make for a strong persuasion. Remember, a Jedi got clones to fight one another before.
>>
>>5744805
I definetly can see that, a lot of admirals will support him, which could secure many fleets unless the clones aboard rebel. Tarkin will be one of the firsts to support him.

The seps are definetly not down and out of the picture, but they got defeated a lot and lost one after the other Dooku (not just a great general, he was also one of the main leaders of the separatist senate and the bridge between the megacorporations and the idealists which had a lot of friction), Grevious and Darth Sidious. They will take any peace treaty they can from Organa, because they might not be at peace between themselves sooner or later (unless someone else takes power and leads them against the split galactic republic).

>>5744832
Palpatine ruined their image, but Organa political party is still strong. The Delegation of 2,000 was a clear sign Sheeve didn't have total control, even if it happened way too late for it to matter.
The jedi will depend heavily on Organa faction and the clones that follow him, plus allies and friends made during the war.
Separatist propaganda on the Jedi wasn't too nice either, but they might be fine with making peace with Organa.
>>
>>5744860
>, but Organa political party is still strong. The Delegation of 2,000 was a clear sign Sheeve didn't have total control, even if it happened way too late for it to matter.
It's a strong minority but still only symbolic, they were never popular enough with the public to challenge sheev's rule. They never had the votes to force anything and governors have already been put in place by this point.

Her being alive is gonna be so interesting, if she joins Ani in hating the Jedi it will have some heavy political consequences, and maybe even keep Ani on a moderate level of hatred?

But there's also Ahsoka, former padawan of Anakin, and outed from the Jedi. Will she feel compelled to respond to him?

>Return to Commander Fabian. Orders are orders, and he is your CO.

You have your orders, and from someone you trust. Fabian was on Geonosis, like yourself and Joyce. He won’t rush into some foolhardy plan that’ll get you and your men killed, or order you to spend your lives needlessly. He and the 323rd, and presumably the rest of the regiment now, are only a few klicks away, 2 hours distance by foot. You put a hand on Beck’s shoulder.

>We’ll rejoin the regiment. Orders are orders, and we’ll go with the ones we can follow.

Beck nods in reply. “Yes sir. I’ll tell the men.”

You leave him to prepare, comming the captains and organising the regiment so it can move out. Soon enough the battalion is packed up and on the move, heading to FOB Tarsus, a real FOB and headquarters of the regiment, not the piles of equipment and ammunition you were using in your wargames. The men pass the trip in silence, each soldier lost in his own thoughts. This was an entirely new experience for you clones, even more for the shinies who had yet to fight in a real battle. The possibility that they wouldn’t be fighting the separatists for their first battle weighed heavy on every mind, even yours.

Soon enough, you arrive at FOB Tarsus. You were right. The entire regiment is here, though that’s not a complete reassurance. There’s more sentries on patrol than usual, and even more troopers standing around uneasily. Apart from the usual movement of men and machines, the base is quiet. The few who are holding conversations do it in hushed tones, and with sideways glances at you and your men as you arrive. As you lead the men to the barracks, a runner approaches and gives you a salute.

“Commander Sulla. Commander Fabian is requesting your presence at HQ.”

You motion Beck over.

>You’re in charge for now. I don’t want anyone to start anything, got it?

“Yes sir.”

You nod at him, then turn and return the messenger’s salute.

>Lead on.
>>
>>5746141

The command building is an octagonal dome in the centre of the base. Inside, Commander Fabian and the other regimental officers are waiting around a glowing holotable. Colonel Shade is standing next to Fabian, while Commanders Fisher and Yegor are standing opposite each other on either side of the table. You walk in and stand opposite Fabian.

Each man here has seen his fair share of combat. While you and Fabian are the only Geonosis veterans, Shade, Fisher, and Yegor are extremely competent in their own right. Shade has been Fabian’s 2IC since the beginning, and he’s utterly loyal to the man. You’ve also heard rumours that he got his name from black ops missions early in the war, but any details would be beyond your clearance level. His stone cold demeanour lends credence to the theory though.

Fisher is different, louder, more aggressive. Though it’s against regulations, he always leads from the front, never asking his troops for something he wouldn’t do himself. A brave man. His men love him for it, and a lot of the other officers in the regiment respect him greatly as well. Little wonder he’s in charge of the infantry battalion.

Yegor on the other hand is a patient man. As long as he has a chance at success, he can wait however long it takes for his mission to be finished. He doesn’t take needless risks, content to play his part and let the situation develop in his favour. You don’t think anything can shake him. A perfect man for sieges.

You look to Commander Fabian. Like you, he’s been fighting since the very beginning of this war. A There’s few officers you’d trust to lead this regiment as well as him. As you wait for him to begin, you notice his face is pale, eyes distant, a heavy frown across his brow. In all the time you’ve served under him you’ve never seen him exhibit any signs of fear, or stress, or worry. But now, you can see he looks shaky, unsure, almost afraid.

He glances at you, sighs, and begins.
>>
>>5746142

“You all know what’s happened. The Republic has been split in two. We’ve been given conflicting orders, and no way to determine which is more legitimate than the other. All communications with Coruscant have ceased. Last word from there was that the fleet was opening up on each other, then nothing. We haven’t had any word for the past few hours, and none of our requests have been acknowledged. Half the brigade [Your regiment is one of 4, part of a legion/brigade] is pressuring Commander Thorpe to declare for Skywalker, but he hasn’t budged either way. There’s no conflict within the brigade yet, but legions in several key locations are already battling each other and calling for assistance; the navy hasn’t started fighting itself, but it’s currently in a standoff in orbit. I presume that’s the work of the non-clone officers. Before this happened General Plo Koon was the highest ranking officer on the planet, but contact with him and the 104th Legion have also ceased.”

The situation on the holotable is similarly grim. The entire planet is displayed, and you and the others can see red hotspots glowing across the surface, calls for assistance, movement orders, units under attack. The system is automatically displaying the separatist symbol for attacking enemy forces. There’s no symbol for an attack by other clones. Commander Fabian continues.

“I understand that each of you will want to go out and fight. To choose a side. Fight for The Republic. But I want you to understand that you’ll be fighting your brothers. The men you’ve trained with, fought with. Not droids. Not separatists. But clones.”

Though none of you have said a word, you can feel the room suddenly become noticeably more quiet. Commander Fabian continues to speak.

“I… I will not do that. Cannot do that. I’ve been fighting this war since Geonosis. I refuse to fight against men I’ve fought with and nearly died for. As for the regiment… I will not order you against your brothers, even if ordered to myself. I can send men to their deaths, but I cannot tell them to kill each other.”

He begins to shake, a little. He leans over the holotable, arms resting on each side for support.

“I acknowledge that this may make me a traitor to both sides. Though if anyone tries to arrest me now, Colonel Shade’s going to shoot you.”

He says it with a weak smile on his face, as a joke, but you don’t doubt Shade would do it. You get the feeling the others know it too. Fabian taps some buttons and the holotable shifts from the planet to some bunker-like buildings and terrain.
>>
>>5746144

“In any case, there’s no jedi here, so execution or protection is a moot point; and since I won’t participate in the slaughter that’s about to erupt across the planet, I’m going to follow the last relevant orders I received. This regiment will be assaulting the Neimoidian treasure vaults, and seizing their contents for the Republic. Fighting the separatists instead of each other.” You get the feeling that’s not the only reason he wants those treasure vaults secured, but you can’t quite think of why.

He looks up at each of you. “If you wish to leave and fight for one side or another, I will allow you to do so, so long as you don’t fight anyone still under my command. Shade’s sticking with me. I can also arrange transport for you if you want to take your men and join up with one side or another, but once you’re no longer under my command I cannot guarantee your safety. Any questions?”

Fisher speaks up. “Sir, I think you should declare for Skywalker, sir.” Always subtle that one.

Fabian just shakes his head. “No. I’ll fight for the republic, but I will not tell you to fight against other clones.” You know he means it, but you also know that sooner or later he’s going to be forced to give that order. One way or another.

Yegor is staring daggers at Fisher, but he hasn’t spoken up. You’re guessing he’s an Organa supporter. He then looks at the commander.

“What of Commander Weylon, sir?” Your divisional CO, one rung above brigade commander.

“We’ve lost contact. Last report was several explosions from his headquarters, then nothing.”

Yegor nods, and says no more. Fabian looks around at you.

“Anything else?”

>Yes, you have some questions. (What?)
>No, move on.

>Do we have any naval detachment for getting the treasure off world?

“I have not yet communicated with the naval forces regarding my intentions. I advise all of you to do the same. Fighting hasn’t broken up out there, and I’m hoping it stays that way.”

>If we encounter partisans attempting to seize the treasure for their side, what then?

“They are separatists, and are to be engaged with immediately. I will be re-issuing our prior ROE upon commencement of the mission, to all units still with me.”

>How are our supplies for the assault looking?

“Supplies will be fine, since this was the original mission we were prepping for. If you’re worried about logistics, we only have access to what we have with us at the moment, but that is enough for now. The logistics depots have mostly remained peaceful so far, and I think they’ll service us if we request it peacefully. But I can’t make any guarantees with the current situation.”

>”Would it not be wiser to organise a temporary truce with the separatists while we figure all this out? Taking the treasure vault can’t be our biggest concern right now.”

Fabian lets out a big sigh. “Commander Sulla, I’d like nothing more than for everyone to sit down at a table and work this all out. But making a peace with the separatists is not part of our orders, and even if they were, we have no way of contacting them or any central authority to make that call. I can’t make any guarantees to them, and even if I could, what then? Right now, my biggest priority is getting away from this planet, before the Grand Army eats itself alive.”

You nod. He loves his men, but he also loves his brothers, and he wants to avoid fighting them at all costs.

>In the unlikely circumstance that we run into a Jedi, what are we to do with them?

He stares into the distance long and hard at that one. “I’ll deal with that if it comes.”
>>
>>5746469

>"Sir, if I may speak up. The issue is about arresting the jedi or not, but seeing as there's no jedi among us, we have no conflicting orders. Therefore, any clones opening fire on another clone are NOT acting in the republic's interest."

This time it’s Yegor who speaks, shaking his head as he does.

“No. Skywalker’s message proclaimed all who did not execute the jedi as traitors. And Organa’s order countermanding that amounts to the same thing. All each side is doing is following orders. That’s all that can be done for us. That’s what we were made for.”

There’s silence in the room as the words hang in the air. All you’ve done is serve; it’s all every clone’s done. To serve and fight. None of you have known anything else. You shake your head. You need to focus, can't get distracted.

>Sir, with all due respect, it’s foolish to think either side of the civil war present here is not thinking to take the treasury for themselves. We will have to fight taskforces of both sides, alongside regular separatists and neimodian forces. We will have to be very rapid and precise to avoid getting stuck.

Commander Fabian nods. “I know. But it’s a risk I have to take. The alternative is… beyond my capacities as commander. Perhaps that is a flaw. But it’s one I have to live with.”

>And what about after the treasury assault? We leave the planet to continue fighting against the separatists? That would be fighting for the republic, but a republic that is split and which will not supplies us if we don't join either side. What then? I'll be honest, if we don't participate in the conflict there is only a few roads left for us out of it, sir. And most of them look ugly.

Fabian’s voice is quiet now. “I know that. It will be a tough road ahead, if you choose to follow me. But one that will stick to the principles of the Republic, and uphold our responsibility to each of our brothers. All of them.” His voice is almost a whisper now. “I hope.”
>>
>>5746470

He looks up. “Is that everything? Good. I will be moving out against the vaults tomorrow. You have until then to make your decision. If you wish to receive transport to one of the assembly zones, I will arrange it. Until then, dismissed.”

You all salute him. Shade walks calmly out of the room, without having ever said a word. Fisher and Yegor walk off together, whispering furiously. The beginning of an argument it looks like. Thankfully it doesn’t seem like a hostile one, but you suspect that if left alone they’ll each choose to leave to fight on the planet. On opposing sides.

Commander Fabian remains in the room, staring at the holotable. On it, the location of the treasure vaults rotates slowly, displaying it from every possible angle of attack. It’s a strong position, that’s for sure. One that will require a fierce assault. Fabian is right, it’s not going to be an easy path.

Things will start moving tomorrow. Fabian and Shade to the treasure vaults, Fisher and Yegor somewhere else, presumably. What will you do now?

This post is unrelated to the quest, but in light of the happenings over at DC Henchman Quest I am deciding to make a PSA for anyone in this thread, on the off chance that it does some good and prevents what happened over there from occurring to anyone here, however low that chance may be.

I know we’re all random anons on a silly mongolian basketweaving forum, but I want you to know that your life is valuable and worth living, and experiencing, no matter how hard and seemingly insurmountable it may get.

If you ever feel down or need anyone to talk to, about anything, I (and I hope many of the players here) will always be here to listen, and while I’m not going to pretend that just talking will solve any problems you might have, I hope it will at least ease any immediate feelings of despair or misery that might be affecting you.

I realise that this probably won’t apply or matter to most of the anons browsing this quest (or at least, I hope it doesn’t), but I think posts like these are worth making nonetheless, since no-one should suffer needlessly, or alone.

It’s hard to live, but, with the help of other people, it can become easier.

Though asking Fabian what his real plan is sounds tempting, I feel like avoiding brother against brother at the highest levels of the military is more important.

While you're right, i'm more interested in seeing things from Mas Amedas' perspective. With Organa, it's still the same general idea of the republic being taken over. But Mas Amedda? He knew about his plans. His death has basically thrown all plans out the goddamn window.

Palpatine's plan, that is.

He's also pretty much the closest thing Anakin's side would have to a 'legal' leader. >Talk to Fisher and Yegor. Maybe you can convince them to stick with Commander Fabian, or perhaps you can go with one of them to an assembly zone.

You decide you’ll go after your fellow commanders, Fisher and Yegor. While your relationship with them is purely professional, you know that both of them are close friends, apparently comrades from the same batch on Kamino. They’d fought together their entire careers. And now, if your suspicions were correct, they were arguing over something which was already tearing the Grand Army apart.

You head out of the command bunker. Friends who might find themselves on opposite sides of a new war. No, not friends, brothers. What has this galaxy come to?

You see them heading into the mess. You follow, taking a slow, relaxed pace. There’s no need to hurry. Forces far beyond your control are moving through The Republic, moving armies and men against each other across all of known space. An argument between friends is inconsequential, in the grand scheme of things. Or is it? If friends like that can fight against each other, willing to kill, even, then what does that mean for the rest of you? For The Republic?

Already it’s late afternoon, the sun slowly dipping beneath the red horizon, and soon it will be twilight. The shadows are lengthening. The cool air of Cato Neimoidia washes over you, soothing, and calm. It carries no sign of the fighting that’s surely ongoing across the planet. Not a hint of war. Like the faces of your men as some pass you. Their smiles as they salute you are clean and carefree. They seem so much younger.

The door to the mess opens, and you shake your head. You’re getting too old. Losing focus like this. The many long years of war have left you weary, yearning for peace, though you know that with this there won’t be any peace for a while. You’ll have to fight until it’s ended. Just like they trained you. Until the mission is done.

Inside, there’s several groups of clones sitting together, probably off duty. Dinner’s not for several hours. You can see that there’s no mixed groups from separate battalions, everyone’s sitting with their own. Keeping to themselves. There’s also an unusual amount of sentries, from Shade’s 323rd, stationed at every one of the exits. All with their helmets on. The two on either side of you turn and give a salute before returning to their watch.
>>
>>5748580

You head across the room to the officer’s mess, which is where Fisher and Yegor will be. As you get to the door you can hear raised voices inside, though it’s not yet at a shouting match. Inside, as you expected, are Fisher and Yegor, standing on opposite sides of the officers’ table. They haven’t noticed you come in, or if they have, they’ve ignored it to focus on their argument. Fisher on the side of Skywalker, Yegor supporting Organa.

“The Jedi have betrayed The Republic!”

“We don’t know that.”

“Of course we do! Skywalker himself said it! He’s one of them, he should know more than anyone what they’ve been planning! He was close to the Chancellor too, close enough that he might have been trusted with Order 66, should this happen. The Chancellor probably suspected it.”

“Chancellor Organa explicitly ordered us not to follow any of Skywalker’s commands. That includes those that would have come from the Chancellor himself.”

“The senator is a known jedi sympathiser. If you ask me, he was in on any plans they had. And he hasn’t denied that they killed the Supreme Chancellor! Instead he proclaims that Chancellor Palpatine has been declared unfit for officer and that he’s in charge now.”

“Order 65 has been authorised by the Security Council. The codes all fit. It’s a completely legitimate and authenticated order.”

“And what if that council was forced to do that by the jedi? They kill him and they declare him illegitimate after the fact. They’re powerful enough they could do that. A neat coup where they seize control of the republic. Like Count Dooku would have tried to do, had he won.”

“Coup or no, we must obey that order. Organa is the legitimate leader of The Republic now. Skywalker doesn’t have anything near the authority of the Chancellor. He’s a general, nothing more.”

“Surely you can’t believe that? Just because Organa has the authority doesn’t mean we should obey him. It’s not right. We can’t let the jedi take over The Republic because we were ordered to. Do you think we should have surrendered if the Separatists won at Coruscant?”
>>
>>5748581

You can tell that this argument is going to go on for a while. It won’t stop, unless you step in. You have to support one against the other, demonstrate that they’re wrong. Or, you could try arguing a different side, you don’t need to be in disagreement. And if you argue well enough, they might be more open to working with you later. You’ll need comrades in the battles ahead, wherever you go.

Note: This will NOT lock you in to supporting one side or the other. It will however affect your relationships with certain characters in the regiment.

>Take Fisher’s side of the argument. As far as you know, it does look like the Jedi attempted a coup. And if they did, isn’t it your duty to fight against them?
>Take Yegor’s side of the argument. Acting Chancellor Organa is the reigning authority in The Republic now. You have to respect that.

>Argue Commander Fabian’s side, taking sides in this conflict, or even fighting against other clones. You can’t take up arms against the men you’ve fought with and bled for, or against men who believe in The Republic.

Fisher is scowling now, while Yegor has a slight frown. Both passionate men who’d fight and die for The Republic. And, perhaps, each other. But you can’t let them continue on like this, entrenching themselves in opposite positions.

“We need to uphold the Republic! Chancellor Organa is that Republic now, and we must respect that. Or are we to follow some military junta instead?”

“Not when the jedi are the ones pulling the strings! Damn you, we can’t sit by and let it be subverted!”

“There’s no proof of that! Skywalker and you are in the wrong, can’t you see that?”

“The jedi started this war. And now they’ve ended it by killing the Chancellor! From my point of view the jedi are wrong!”

>No.

They both turn to look at you, shocked by your sudden interjection. You feel a moment of hesitance, then push on.

>It doesn’t matter who’s right or wrong. Who’s really for The Republic, or against it. Not if we’re being forced to choose between that and our brothers. Our comrades. Our friends. Commander Fabian’s right. We can’t be fighting each other. Look at you. Two friends, arguing. Tomorrow you’ll probably go your separate ways. But what then? Killing each other on the battlefield? Killing men you’ve trained with, and fought with? And not just you, but the troops under your command as well. Why not shoot each other now and spare your men the trouble?

You can feel the emotion slip into your voice, the doubt and the worry. What side to take? Who to choose?

Yegor raises his hand, as if in reassurance. “Commander Sulla…”

>I’ve been fighting this damned war since Geonosis. Never once complained. I’ve done my duty, fought for The Republic without hesitation for 3 years. But this? Taking up arms against men I’ve fought with, and bled for? Against men who believe in The Republic as passionately as any other clone? We’re clones, dammit! We think the same, we feel the same. We can’t let that divide us. We can’t fight each other for it. I can’t let what started on Geonosis end in… clones slaughtering each other.”
>>
>>5749446

Fisher sits down. “We’re sorry. It’s just… high passion, I guess.” He rubs his eyebrows.

Yegor nods.
“It’s hard.” He shakes his head. “Not everyone sees it the way you and Fabian do.” He says, quietly.

>I know. But I don’t want our brothers to fight. They’re not droids. Both sides believe in their cause.

Fisher motions for Yegor to also take a seat, which he does. They stare at you a moment, before Fisher responds.

“It’s how we’re bred. Like the Prime Clone. Confident, and certain in our beliefs.”

>Uncompromising.

They nod. You make a decision and you don’t regret it. Most of you, anyway. You were all identical clones, but there was always going to be some differences. Just the nature of the program. You each sit awhile, lost in your thoughts. It’s Yegor who breaks the silence.

“So you’re on Fabian’s side then?”

>Maybe. I just think he’s right. Us clones shouldn’t be fighting each other. No matter who’s right. Better to leave it be. Find something else to fight against. Like the seppies. Follow the last good orders we were given. Easier that way.

You speak confidently, trying to convince them, but a small voice in the back of your head nags at you. Is it really going to be that easy? Are the powers propelling the galaxy going to let you ignore their insidious plans? Can you just… choose to walk out of this new war that’s already erupted?

No, says the voice. It won’t be easy. It will be hard. Perhaps harder than anything else you’ve known. And you can tell these two that it’s better to fight with each other than against each other, but sooner or later someone’s going to come and recite the oaths you took to defend the republic, and what then? What kind of things will you be forced to do?

The room is quiet as each of you think about the future. Where you’ll be going next. What deeds you and your men will do. The future is never a clear thing for a soldier, beyond your enemy and the Mission, but what lies ahead is murky for every one of you. Brothers against brothers. The Republic set against itself. Nothing is certain.

Yegor looks up at you. “Thank you, Commander Sulla, for talking to us. You’ve given us a lot to think about.”

Fisher nods in agreement. You can only hope you have. You give a salute, and leave the room, heading to your battalion’s barracks. Your men wait there for you to lead them to a new battlefield in the morning. You can only wonder what it will be. And, you wonder where Fisher and Yegor will lead their men. Will they listen? Or will they go off to fight in a galaxy-spanning fratricide?

You pass the night in an uneasy sleep, thinking about all that has happened and the events that are surely playing out across the planet, no, the entire galaxy. War. Clones set against clones. Every one of your beliefs tested to the breaking point. You wonder what will happen if you ever have to face a force of hostile clones, if you’d give the order to open fire on your own brothers. Would you? You don’t like to think about that kind of situation.

And what of the jedi? Were they innocent in all of this, or had they really tried to take over the Republic? The people who had defended the Republic against its foes for the last thousand years, who had lead all its armies against the separatists? There was even one who had lead your regiment several months ago, before you and your men were assigned to it, but he had died in battle on Devaron. A lot of jedi had died defending the Republic. If they planned to seize control though, you suppose they would fight to preserve it. Much of the citizenry had become frustrated too, claiming they were perpetuating the entire war. You’d never questioned it, you had your orders, but now…

You’re not sure whether you should be surprised or relieved when you open your eyes and notice that you have slept through the night. Already, you can hear the sounds of activity through the barracks. You get up and don your armour, heading for the doorway to the base. Outside the dawn has yet to break. A faint orange glow illuminates the Eastern horizon, but above you and to the West lie dark clouds and grey sky. The base is abuzz with activity, as the entire regiment prepares to move out. Whether to fight in this new war or continue your last one, you cannot say.
>>
>>5751077

Around you, clones are moving, carrying equipment or out on patrol. Though you can’t see their faces, tension is visible in their every movement. Fear too, perhaps. Before, you always had your mission and clear orders to execute them. But now not even their commanders are truly sure of what will happen. What they will have to do. It unsettles the men, and it unsettles you too.

Above, the last stars of the morning are shining faintly in the sky. You wonder what’s happening on those distant worlds. A repeat of what’s down here, most likely. If they’re Republic worlds. You have no clue what the Separatists are doing. They must have intercepted those two broadcasts by now, but what they might gleam from them you can’t say. Another unknown for the future. At least the skies seem peaceful. The navy must still be in a deadlock; so that’s one thing that isn’t a problem, for now.

When you report in to the command room it is just Commander Fabian and Colonel Shade there, looking at a map of some terrain. Commander Fabian’s face is pale, and there’s some stubble growing on it. He looks like he hasn’t had any sleep at all. Maybe he didn’t. He nods at you only briefly when you salute him before returning his attention to Shade and the display. Hearing steps behind you, you see that Fisher and Yegor have also arrived. You’re all here now. The entire regiment. 4 battalions of clones. Where will you all go after this meeting? Your separate ways, to fight on opposite sides of this war? Or will you try for something else?

Commander Fabian looks exhausted. He’s going to need all the help he can get assaulting these treasure vaults, and if half the regiment up and leaves, your chances become a lot thinner. No, you need to try to keep everyone together. Fisher and Yegor will leave to fight in this war, maybe even against each other. You’re brothers, comrades, and you can’t let them go off to fight and die like that, dammit. You only hope you can convince them to stay. You’re sure sticking with Commander Fabian is where you all belong.

Your CO looks like he’s still busy with the planning, so you turn around and nod to your two fellow commanders.

>Fisher. Yegor. Can I have a moment?

They hesitate, before nodding and following you to a quiet corner of the room. Out of the corner of your eye, you notice Shade glance at you a moment before turning his attention back to the holotable.

Yegor tilts his neck. “What’s this about, Sulla?”

>I know that both of you want to go your separate ways and fight for the sides you believe in. The Grand Army is coming apart and you want to stop that. But you won’t do it any good by fighting. Whatever side you’re on you’ll just be fighting clones. Brothers. I want you to stick with the regiment.

They both stiffen at this. You know they believe in their chosen causes as much as they believe in the Republic. You know that fighting is in their blood as much as it is in yours. You push on.

>Fabian’s our CO. He cares about his men. About us. And he knows that the separatists are still our enemy. Not each other. And if we take these treasure vaults we’re taking the fight to them. These are the last good orders we’ve had, and Commander Fabian knows it. It doesn’t matter what other orders we’ve had. We’re still at war with the seppies, right? They’re still our enemy, no matter what else is happening in the galaxy. And we have a mission to defeat them.

Fisher and Yegor look at each other, and then at you. You can’t read them. As you stare back at your own face, duplicated, you wonder what they’ll decide. Fleetingly, you wonder how the Kaminoans cloned you so perfectly in body, but seemingly not in mind. Perhaps something for the jedi to discuss. If there were any left.

Thanks anons. They’re silent for a few moments before Fisher shakes his head. “Why do you and the Commander have to make so much sense? Fine. I’ll stay. Can’t just let the seppies get away with it. I’ll stick with the regiment, Sulla.” He offers his hand, and you grip it firmly in a tight shake.

Yegor turns his head to Fisher. “Well, dammit. If you’re sticking around, then I guess I have to as well. Wouldn’t be proper to deprive the regiment of an entire company. And no matter what, we’re brothers. We’ll fight and die together.”

He gives you a smile, and shakes your hand too. You’ve done it. The 451st will operate at full strength, at least for now. You’re not sure what the future holds, but at least you know that you’ll be fighting with men you trust. You suppose, given the situation, you couldn’t ask for anything more.

You nod, and thank them. You weren’t sure if they’d really listen to you. Together, you all walk back to the holotable where Commander Fabian and Shade are deep in thought.

>Commanders Sulla, Fisher, and Yegor, reporting for duty, sir!

Each of you snap a salute. Fabian looks up at you, a surprised look visible in his tired eyes. He looks at each of you, and his eyes widen when he realises it’s true. The Regiment is whole. He smiles. “Thank you. Every one of you.” He straightens up and returns the salute. Commander Shade just looks directly at you and nods, once.

Commander Fabian continues. “Now that we are all together, the briefing will begin.” He pushes some buttons on the holotable, and the display zooms in to a small valley, with a number of small square buildings surrounding a square central building, built into the floor of the valley.

“This is our objective. Away from the bridge cities, where the majority of our… operations are being undertaken, this vallet is the location of one of the Neimoidian treasure vaults. Within, it holds a significant part of the treasure the Neimoidians have gathered and hoarded over the long years, and we are going to seize it from them. This is the mission.”
>>
>>5752323

He looks at each of you. “We were due to assault this position yesterday, but due to recent… events, we’ve been delayed significantly. We’re not sure how well it’s defended. Command channels have almost completely broken down, and I can’t get access to any new intelligence reports. I’m operating on the assumption that there is a garrison there, at least a couple battalions worth, but I admit that we’re going in blind. The Seppies could have reinforced it since the news, or redeployed their forces elsewhere to take advantage of the chaos.”

You nod. There’s no telling how the Separatists have reacted to the declarations from Coruscant. It must be clear to them by now that the Grand Army is fighting itself, but what they’re going to do in response is anyone’s guess. You’d thought that they were on the verge to defeat after having their back broken at Coruscant, but now…

“We do know that there’s a good amount of automated defences.” The briefing is still ongoing. “There’s no way to relocate those. Regardless, it’s almost certain that there’ll be resistance. Some outside the facility, but a significant amount inside. The primary objective is securing the treasure, and leaving with it. The actual destruction of separatist forces is secondary. However, we’re not fully certain on what’s contained within these vaults. It could be anything, and that may complicate the mission. But, having you all here gives me a lot more flexibility. Artillery will help pound the defences, though we need it all sufficiently intact to extract, which will be our main focus. We may have to fight incoming separatist forces, depending on how the assault goes. Commander Shade will be leading the assault on the facility outside and securing the treasure.”

“Commander Sulla. You will be…”

Commander Fabian frowns. "Not without my permission, or unless you are fired upon. I haven't declared for any side, so technically we should still be friendly to all Republic units, but... considering the state of the rest of the planet, I would be extremely cautious when encountering other clones. If we encounter them. We were originally going to be supported by other battalions, but we don't have any comms with them or their regiments. Just keep an eye out."

You nod, and step back.
Also, going to need a tiebreaker between securing the perimeter and fire support.

“We’ll need those walls and defences down, but I don’t want so much damage that we can’t access them. Be careful, and make sure your men know what they’re targeting.”

>Yes, sir.

He know that you’re men are shinies and that this will be their first battle, so he’s keeping you away from the frontlines. You’re happy about that. The men will be relatively safe, and they get to practice being a siege battalion, bombarding enemies from afar. However, they’re fresh, so they might make mistakes when directing fire missions. You’ll just have to witness their performance when they get to it.

“Commander Fisher. You will be assisting Commander Shade in his assault. He’ll assault the perimeter and take it, with you coming up behind. Now that we have a full infantry battalion still with us, you’ll be the support to the tip of the spear. Once the above-ground facilities are secure, you’ll be the one leading the assault on the vaults themselves. Any questions?

“None, sir.”

“Good. Yegor. You’ll be securing our rear. Can’t let any reinforcements come up on us in the middle of the op. You’ll be on your own, but if you need help Sulla can redeploy to help you once the main facility is secure. Got that?”

“Yes sir!”

“Very well. Gentlemen. It’s been an honour serving with you. We secure that vault, we leave the planet, and we keep on fighting for the Republic. Stay true to its ideals. To the Grand Army. To our brothers. Good luck.”

He salutes you, and every one of you gives a salute in return. You all leave the command room after that, returning to your own battalions to prep them on the mission and their role. This will be your battalion’s first taste of combat. After this, shinies no more, at least not officially. They’ll need several more battles under them before you and the rest consider them to no longer be green. Still, they’re eager, and you expect they’ll perform competently. They’re soldiers born and bred.

Before you is the valley, the mountains at the far end looming high as they reach to the clouds. In the middle is the treasure vault, a small, squat facility surrounded by a number of buildings you assume are bunkers and barracks. Or wherever it is droids go when they’re not activated. The terrain is good for a siege battalion, the walls of the valley meaning you’re unlikely to be flanked, though there’s some paths on either side that lead into the hills. There could be anything up there, but you didn’t detect any activity while moving here. The 323rd Mechanised and 819th Infantry of Shade and Fisher are on the road that leads from the highway the regiment turned from, right to your objective. Your battalion is deployed a little to the side, ready to set-up. Behind you, further up the road, is Yegor’s 741st securing the rear.

Your captains are already setting up, the artillery moving into firing positions and the engineers digging and constructing fortifications around them, while Boxer’s infantry company stands guard.

What shall your orders be?

Artillery & Engineers
>Keep them as-is, they’re doing a good job.
>No, you think they should be deployed differently (How?)

Infantry
>Keep them guarding the battalion. They’re unlikely to see any action, but you don’t want to take chances.

The 741st is a siege battalion. I don't entirely trust them to secure the rear. A company of infantry is better used as an advance force to find a potential enemy than to close-protect the arty and engineers. One more company won't make a huge difference when two battalions are assaulting.

“…Already been attacked. We’re seeing a lot of dead clones about, and the clankers are moving around in force. The whole facility seems to be on high alert, but there’s significant damage to defensive structures, some turrets seem to be offline. No sign of any further Republic forces. Droid composition is primarily B1s and B2s, some dwarf spiders. Unclear at what strength. There’s a few wrecked tanks, can’t see any operational. Nothing more than that.”

Republic forces have already attacked? Commander Fabian mentioned there was going to be some other battalions supporting your attack, but you hadn’t expected to be beaten here. And it looks like their attack failed. You wonder what side they were on, Skywalker or Organa. Or had they been like you, and gambled that they could take it alone? Your thoughts are interrupted as Commander Fabian’s voice comes through on the comms.

“Captain Tet, please repeat. Confirm Republic casualties?”

“Yes sir. Those are definitely clones. Can’t see anything moving. Can’t confirm unit designation without getting closer either, sir.”

There’s silence for a few seconds. “Acknowledged. Get yourself back here, and join in once we get closer.”

“Copy that sir.”

You hear him click off. It isn’t easy being captain of a scout company. Often the first ones to make contact, and they’re vulnerable targets on the AT-RT walkers. And far too often they’re the bearers of bad news.

“Commander Fabian to all commanders. New tertiary objective: Locate and extract any remaining Republic forces in the area. Likelihood that there’s any left is low, but we don’t know that for sure. Securing the vaults is still our primary objective. And be on the lookout for incoming enemy reinforcements, the seppies are already alarmed and they may have called for help. Stay alert.”

You hear the other captains give their acknowledgement, and you comm in your own. Sounds like the mission’s encountered its first snag. You have no clue if enemy reinforcements are incoming or not, nor where they might come from if they are. They might complicate extraction, if they exist. If you could still access the GAR Strategic Network you’d be able to check, but you doubt there’s any way to contact them now, or even anyone with eyes on the local area. They’re busy elsewhere.

“I’m calling it now. We proceed immediately. Shade and Fisher, start moving. Sulla, you may fire when ready.”

>Acknowledged.

“323rd Commencing.”

“819th Following.”

The attack has begun. You watch through your macrobinoculars as the A5 juggernauts of the 323rd begin moving down the road, with the 819th doing double time behind them. Time is of the essence now, you can’t afford to leisurely bombard the place and stroll in, you need to take it, and quick. You call up Boxer.

>Boxer.

“Yes sir?”

>The base has already been attacked and the seppies are alert. There’s no clones at the base, but there might still be some in the area. Keep an eye out for any scattered clone squads, or incoming reinforcements.

“Roger that, sir.”

You quickly check the assault as the 323rd barrels down the road at all speed. They’ll be there in only a few minutes, but it might take a while to properly breach the defences. You could open fire, but there's a chance there's still clowns down there. What are your orders?

You watch as the barrels of your cannons raise into the air, ready to unleash a destructive storm of fire upon their target. You recognise the possibility that there still might be friendly forces there, holding out in a building or just hiding from the patrolling droid forces, but you know that if you don’t destroy those defences then Shade and Fisher’s men will suffer the consequences. Even though they’re not under your command you still have a responsibility to them too. And, there is always the possibility that there isn’t anyone left.

Your captains are standing with you, each of them awaiting your order. They’re all perfectly calm, ready to commence the battalion’s first entry into combat. The men have trained for this. You know they’re ready.

>Open fire!

It takes only a few seconds for them to relay the order to their men. As soon as they do, flashes of light appear, immediately followed by a thunderous boom that shakes you to your very bones. The ground you’re standing on shakes, and items on the table next to you vibrate suddenly. There’s few weapons in the Republic arsenal that can match the AV-7 cannon. The power of artillery.

Your captains bring up their macrobinoculars to their helmets again, watching for the effectiveness of your artillery. It should only be a few seconds for the shells to start landing.

“We have eyes on incoming enemy reinforcements. Several MTTs and STAP escorts. Estimate 1, maybe 2 companies worth. They haven’t seen us, but they’ll be crossing the river soon enough. No eyes on any clones or further reinforcements.”

>Acknowledged.

Damn. If they cross the river unopposed they’ll cut you off. Or, they might catch the rest of the regiment in the rear as they move to the vault. And you can’t tell if this is just their vanguard or all the reinforcements that they’re sending. At least Boxer and his men haven’t been seen. Fisher’s already committed to the attack, so it looks like you’re the one who’ll have to deal with this.

77, 67. Good effect on target, and some damage, but minimal.

>Order Boxer to pull back, and engage them when they begin deploying. Risky, since it lets them get closer, but it’ll be easier to pick off the droids when they’re out of their transports.

You give your orders to Boxer. He’ll hit them when they start deploying for the maximum amount of damage, since they’ll be unable to counterattack when they’re still deploying from their armoured transports. Risky if they manage to overwhelm him, but you trust he’ll be able to handle it. He’s an ARC Trooper after all.

As soon as you finish you hear Joyce call out next to you.

“Good hits, good hits!”

He’s watching the artillery come down. As you turn and raise your macrobinoculars you can see plumes of smoke rising in the distance around the facility, and a few seconds later you hear the explosions.

“Spread is wide. Could be more concentrated.” The comment comes from Loge this time. You notice that the artillery targeting the bunkers and turrets surrounding the main wall of the facility are taking damage, but enough that some will still be operational. Still, a good chunk of the bombardment has breached the wall, which should make it easier for Shade and his men to make an assault. All in all, a good performance for your men’s first taste of combat.

You can see droids still moving about in the base, thrown into alarm by the bombardment. Looking down the road, you can see Shade and his men are more than halfway there by now, Fisher’s men a little behind. You’ll probably have room for one more bombardment before it becomes danger close for them.

With that taken care of, you decide to check on Boxer’s situation.

>Boxer. Status report.

It takes a few moments, but Boxer’s voice soon comes in on the commlink.

“MTTs have crossed the bridge. Beginning to deploy West of the road. Will engage shortly. Boxer out.”

It seems like the assault is going as well as it can, for now. All that’s left is to continue hammering them until Shade and Fisher secure the vaults and you can begin to get out of here. Still, the first wave of reinforcements are here, and you don’t know if there’s more coming. You can get in at least one more good bombardment of the base, but it might be prudent to redirect your artillery and back up Boxer if there’s more coming, so he can have more flexibility.

You’ve done a good enough job on the base. The walls are breached and the outer defences have been hit. Shade and Fisher can handle it from here on out. Now you just have to make sure you can all get out of here with the prize instead of becoming trapped.

>Joyce, Loge. New fire mission. Target those reinforcements engaging Boxer. On the double!

“Sir, yes sir!” They call out in unison.

They relay your command to their men, and you watch as the raised barrels of the artillery turn, rotating so they’re pointing in the direction the blasterfire is coming from. It takes a few minutes, but soon they’re in position and ready to fire.

You nod to Joyce and Loge.

They signal their men, and the cannons are roaring once again, shaking the ground you’re standing on. You can hear the thunder roll through the valley, the flashes of light illuminating the area around you.

You send a message to Boxer. Better tell him about that incoming artillery support.

>Boxer. I’m calling down artillery on those MTTs. Sit tight.

“Copy that.”

You wait a few moments, and then remember he’s an ARC. They’re men of few words. Stoic and austere.

>Status report?

“Caught them unprepared. Blunted most of the attack, but those STAPs hit us hard in return. Significant casualties here, but we’re still operational. Got hit a few times myself too.”

>Are you alright?

“I’d be dead if I wasn’t.”

That’s an ARC Trooper for you. The rest of your conversation is cut off as the artillery begins to land. Leaving it be, you turn your eyes to the attack on the base. Looks like Shade has gotten in range, and his Juggernauts are laying down fire while they disgorge their load of troops. Happily, you can see the amount of fire going into the base far outpaces what’s coming out of it. They should have it secure by the time Fisher arrives. Before you can sweep to get an eye on his position, you get a comms request from the man himself. Surprising.

>Fisher. What can I do for you?

“Saw your guys catch those reinforcements. Good job there, would have hated to get hit in my rear. But I can see even more coming down the valley, looks to be an equivalent force. Better tell your men to finish up quick, or move to a more secure position.”

>Copy that. Thanks for the callout Fisher.

“Anytime.”

Sweeping your macrobinoculars up the side of the valley, you quickly locate the new reinforcements. Looks like another 2 companies of MTTs. They’ll be here soon, and you don’t doubt they’ll be heading for Boxer’s position. And if those 2 companies he’s dealing with aren’t finished off soon, you’ll be dealing with an entire battalion of droids on the field.

What are your orders for Boxer?

>Keep Boxer in position. You trust he can handle the situation, he’s got artillery support. Plus he’s an ARC.

You decide you’ll pull Boxer back towards you. He’s already suffered some casualties, better not let him get bogged down and surrounded by those reinforcements. Your artillery fire will be more accurate when they get closer anyway, and it’ll help to draw them away from Shade and Fisher.

You raise your arm to press the comm button on your helmet when Boxer’s voice comes through unprompted.

“Cease fire! Cease fire! Friendly fire! You’re hitting us! Cease fire!”

Your whole world slows as you comprehend the words. Friendly fire? What-?

“Second volley, fire!”

Loge’s voice shatters you from your state of shock. No. No!

>No! Cease fire! Now!

Loge looks at you for a moment, before quickly countermanding his last order. The guns remain silent. But the damage has already been done.

>Boxer! Status report?

It takes a moment, a long moment, but finally his voice comes through on comms. “Operational. Significant casualties. Estimate 50% combat effectiveness. Trying to assert calm. Damn shinies.”

You’re unsure whether the comment’s directed to your artillery troops or his own. Dammit. Dammit all. You’ve fired on your own men. Unintentionally, you’re sure by accident, but you’ve gotten men under your command killed. You can send men to their deaths, you’ve made peace with that, but to fire on your own men…

You look at Joyce and Loge, who along with Major Beck are now looking in the direction of Boxer and his men with their macrobinoculars. They’re silent, until Joyce speaks.

“Did we just-?”

You ignore him and instead give your orders to Boxer.

>Boxer. Pull back. Make your way to us as best you are able. Priority is to get out of there.

“Yes sir.” No hesitation. He’ll be leaving those too wounded to walk, you both know that. But with his casualties he can’t hold off the incoming reinforcements without sacrificing himself and his men, and you’re not going to order him to do that. You look to Joyce and Loge.

>The artillery is to hold fire unless at my direct command, got it?

“Sir, yes sir!”

It’s an easy enough mistake to make. Entering in the wrong coordinates, mixing up the positions of your enemy and your own men. And the men they’re commanding are shinies. The first time they’re fighting in combat. You know they must be feeling the greatest shame and horror over what’s happened, but you can’t let them make any further decisions under that mindset. You need to give them time to calm down before giving back their command responsibilities. Beck is silent, but Goto is the one to speak up.

“Should we go over and…

>No. Not yet. Priority is those reinforcements. Once they’re gone we can go and recover any wounded, but not a moment before. Got it?

“…Yes sir.”

You know he wants to go and help more than anything, but you can’t let him run off by himself. You need to maintain discipline and command. Make sure nobody else gets killed. You can go there later to pick up the wounded. If there’s any left. Prisoners haven’t been taken in this war. The droids are droids, they’re not programmed to surrender, just like they’re not programmed to take prisoners. So both sides have continued fighting until there’s only one left. You wonder what the case will be when it’s against clones?

You get an incoming comms request that interrupts further thoughts. It’s from Commander Fabian.

“Sulla. Status report.”

You hesitate a moment before saying it.

>Blue on blue.

To his credit, Fabian doesn’t pause or hesitate when he hears it. Probably witnessed some friendly fire incidents over the years himself.

“Acknowledged. You alright?”

>Yes, sir.

“Good. Focus on the operation. We’ll talk later. Just focus on getting your boys out of there.
Fabian out.”

The comm goes dead. You turn your attention back to the battlefield. Boxer is pulling back to you, but he’s being pursued by those MTTs and the troops they’ve deployed. You can hold them when they get to you, your engineers have built up formidable forward fortifications, but you also have the problem of those extra reinforcements that are crossing the river. You can see them from here, another two companies of MTTs and the troops within.

What are your orders for the artillery?
>Target the forces attacking boxer. Just a few more good hits and they should be eliminated.
>Target the reinforcements. You need to delay them as much as you can, before they manage to cut you off or catch up with Boxer.

Additionally, do you want to call in support from Yegor?
>Yes, call in artillery fire from Yegor. You need to eliminate those reinforcements.
>Don’t, he might come under attack too. Better not risk it.

>Target the reinforcements. You need to delay them as much as you can, before they manage to cut you off or catch up with Boxer.

You need to target those reinforcements. Having boxer retreat back two you and beating his pursuers back won’t mean much if you all come under assault from two fresh companies of droids. Those MTTs are tricky, they’re mobile, well armoured, and the droids inside, if they deploy, are worth half a company of troops. You’re dug in, but you want to avoid any further casualties today if it can be helped. You turn to Joyce and Loge, unreadable behind their helmets if it weren’t for the drop in their shoulders. With the collapse in command, you suppose court-martials won’t be carried out for a while, if they’re ever going to return. Or maybe at the end of this, if there is one. Still, you’re responsible for them right now, and the foreseeable future, so you can’t let them despair or become combat ineffective.

>Accidents happen in war. It’s tough when it happens, I know. And I bear some responsibility myself. But we need to focus on the battle. Now, can I trust you to take command of your companies and ensure this doesn’t happen again?

Joyce looks at the ground a moment, then takes a breath.

“Yes sir. We will.”

Loge nods in agreement. You know they will. They’re clones. They’re your men. They won’t let you down. And you won’t let them down either.

>Then let’s hit them with everything we’ve got. Redirect fire to those reinforcements. We’ll wipe them out then destroy those clankers on Boxer’s tail. Get ready!

“Yes sir!”

They each begin barking orders to their men, while you turn to Major Beck.

>Patch me through to Commander Yegor.”

He does so immediately, and soon you hear Yegor’s voice in your helmet.

“Sulla. What can I do for you?”

>A little favour, if you can. How’s your situation?

“Good, no sign of the enemy. My men are a little bored if anything. No action.”

>Excellent. I’d like to request a fire mission on grid coordinates I’ll be sending you, we’ve got a couple companies of clankers here and I need help dealing with them.

“Of course. Send them through and my men will take care of it. They need the practice.”

>Copy that. Sending them now. Many thanks.
You send the coordinates in to Yegor. It’ll be rough, since they’re distant and you don’t have any forward observers, but with your own artillery it should knock out those enemy reinforcements for good. You turn to your own men.

>Open fire!

They signal, and immediately your artillery is thundering once again, booming throughout the valley. Now to see the effects…

As you await the results, you turn your eye to the assault on the base. Shade’s men have already entered the walls, and you can see that they’ve begun to take it. Fisher’s men are also nearly there, and it’s only a matter of time before your main objective will be accomplished. Once you’ve dealt with the reinforcements Fabian will probably need your engineers to help break into the vaults, depending on the security measures. You doubt the Neimoidians left their treasure to droids and automated turrets.

Looking away, you focus on Boxer and his men. They’re retreating as quickly as they can towards you, but it’s going to be a close one. You’re not sure if they’ll make it all the way back before being caught. Those MTT’s have been mauled by your attack though, and they only outnumber him by a little. You could send your engineers over to assist, and while they’re not as effective in frontline combat the numbers should simply overwhelm them.

What will you do?

>Send out your engineers to assist Boxer. He needs all the help he can get.

Kamino and no doubt Rothana and Kuat too, are probably becoming just like Coruscant right now : the first harsh and tough battlefields of the civil war. Very important worlds and very useful.
Fabian to do list will get higher very soon.
No means of resupplying or reinforcing
both for equipment and men, unless he can find and buy GAR equipment on the black markets and find more clones groups going out of this massive conflict.
There is another option : secure clone lab equipment and some kaminoans scientists that were out of Kamino for whatever reason (research, study, ecc). Suicide mission tier likely, because clone labs equipment and kaminoans scientists are probably on the list of assets, both sides of the war will want to grab and get hold on ASAP. If one side cant get Kamino (and even if they keep it), they would want to have more labs around in other worlds.

Clones are great soldiers afterall even has shinies. Far above militias and regular troops, and can hold and fight back against veterans, elites and mercenaries troops. If you can produce and train more of them than the other side, you have a good chance of victory.

>unless he can find and buy GAR equipment on the black markets and find more clones groups going out of this massive conflict.
We might just have to pry whatever armaments we can from the battle droids. Their guns and ammunition should be easy enough to refit, but small arms aren't the only weapons that need resupply. Maybe if we capture a tactical droid from the base, our techies could salvage its systems for information or even to trick battle droids into believing we're in charge. It's not clear if we have any geniuses at hand, however.

>clone labs equipment and kaminoans scientists are probably on the list of assets
This will be the most difficult asset to get our hands on, as not only our current stance in the war would make reinforcements difficult to secure, but possession of Kamino technology or scientists will place a large target on our heads as well. I don't see how we'll be able to secure them unless Fabian has a Kamino scientist on speed dial. Repurposed droids might have to do until then.

You watch the incoming reinforcements with some trepidation. While it’s only about a battalion’s worth of droids, if they get close enough to nullify your artillery advantage they’ll easily overwhelm you, and Shade and Fisher will be too busy with the vault to help. However, you’re confident that with your artillery and Yegor’s, you’ll easily be able to annihilate them. Soon enough, through your macrobinoculars you see plumes of smoke and dirt begin to rise around the MTTs, and after a few seconds you witness explosions amongst their formation as your shells penetrate and detonate within the droid transports.

The barrage from four battalion’s worth of artillery is devastating. With no way to respond, the droids have to push on and endure the barrage as it rains down upon them, and slowly but surely more transports erupt in bursts of flame and smoke, or fall to the ground, powerless. After a few minutes it’s clear that the bombardment has been a resounding success, only a handful of MTTs trying to navigate the sea of flame and wreckage that surrounds them. They won’t be a problem anymore.

That done, you turn your attention to Boxer. You can see him and his men by sight alone now, with the ominous shape of his pursuers only a click or two behind him. Only a few minutes later he and his men have reached the fortifications constructed by your engineers, and are busy preparing themselves to face any droids that come through. Boxer continues jogging to your position, snapping a salute as he reaches you.

“Captain Boxer reporting for duty, sir.”

>Good work. Let your men rest a while, we’ll be wiping them out with artillery. And get some rest yourself. Debrief will be once the battle’s over.

“Yes sir.”

He take a nearby seat to watch the coming barrage. You look to Joyce and Loge.

>Target those transports!

They obey, and soon your guns are pointing at the MTTs, barrels lowered a little to account for their proximity. They’re ready to unleash another devastating round of fire that should hopefully bring an end to all droid forces in the area.

Also, once the battle’s over, do you want to see if you can salvage any equipment from the droids? Keep in mind that according to GAR regulations looting is strictly prohibited, and your logistics system isn’t built for scavenging equipment from the battlefield. Additionally, prejudice against droids, while not trained, is natural to you clones after fighting them for so long, and the men may become uncomfortable if they have to fight with them instead of against.

>Yes, see if you can repair and reprogram any droids to make up an extra company or two. You need every advantage you can get.

Possibly but confederate equipment meed some time for retrofit, much of it is made with no typical humanoid safety in mind (like heat for example). That would be tricky to do and clones have a great tendency, to really not like at all or hate confederate droids. So working with them in battles might not be easy or douable has you think, even if we control them. It will need sometime before the idea is accepted, and most clones might still heavily dislike it.

The only way to know something like this is either through a contact or hearing through rumors (that we would probably need to pay for, or find about on our own). Its true for the target on our heads but we are already double traitors if we refuse to join, and if we also fight against both republics. We are also escaping with a lot of republic military assets and a separatist treasury.
Honestly our best bet currently is probably recruiting humanoid mercs, or humanoid volunteers that agree with our position (which is currently no fighting in the GAR. But doesn't answer anything else). Because any other third group like our own, that has split might go away for their own reasons making recruitment with them possibly difficult. And any defeated clones from the two republics might be too loyal to accept entering our group.

A balance of both might be the safe option. Weapons and munitions can always be bought or found in an safe house, but who knows when we'll get our next resupply. Small arms, their ammunition, and grenades should be easier to salvage. Droids can cover losses or be sent into meat grinders, but let's not take more than we can maintain. Our fellow commanders and CO might also want some say in their roles. It's difficult to tell what they'll think, but I have a feeling they'll accept using them on Separatists and pirates but adamantly refuse to point them toward other Clones.

The distant sounds of battle have died down now. Shade and Fisher must have taken the facility. Now all that’s left is taking care of this last group which has given you so much trouble and the regiment will be free to loot the vaults and all they hold. And from there… you don’t know. Off-world? To fight the Separatists? Or…

You watch through your macrobinoculars as the MTTs and their escorting platoons of droids come ever closer. Less than a company now, they’re still a danger. Boxer and his men have come inside the small outpost your engineers have built, and they’re getting a quick rest before they’re sent out again. He’s down to half a company though, and you have no idea where you’ll get the reinforcements. Before all… this happened, you’d put in a request to Fabian who’d put in a request up the chain to planetary GARHQ, and you’d get the needed reinforcements from a reserve battalion somewhere, but now…

Your thoughts are disturbed by the first impacts of your artillery fire. Plumes of smoke arise around the MTTs and… damn! They’ve missed! Not a single hit. You might catch a few unlucky droids who trip in the craters, but the rest are still coming, and they’re getting closer. You almost wish you'd requested Yegor's help again, but he's taking care of the last remnants of the other reinforcements. Already you can hear the booms from across the valley. But you have to focus on this fight.

>Bad impact! Re-target and fire again!

Loge and Joyce are quick to obey, rapidly snapping out orders to their own subordinates. The guns have to be lowered even more this time, and just as they get into the required position the first laser blasts of the droids start to fly through the air, inaccurate, for now, but if they get any closer they’ll start doing some real damage. Thankfully, your engineers have fortified the entire area, and they and Boxer’s men are waiting for the order to jump to the palisade and open fire. If you somehow miss another volley they’re going to need that protection, the artillery won’t be able to target them at such low elevation.

You nod to Joyce and Loge and they shout to their men.

“Open fire!”

You wait with bated breath as the artillery fires just beside you. The ground shakes once again, the men flinching at every shot. They’re trained to become used to blasterfire and shocks, but nothing can compare to the power of artillery. The droids are so close you can make out their guns, and their fire is becoming more accurate until you see plumes of smoke erupt in the middle of their formation, sending them flying into their air while the MTTs explode in a shower of flame and sparks.

The bombardment continues for only a few seconds, and when the smoke clears, you see a few droids advancing, but they’re quickly wiped out by your men on the fortifications blasting them apart into scrap. It’s done. The burning wreckage of the transports in front of you is buffeted by the wind as the smoke drifts across the battlefield. You hear some echoes from Yegor’s bombardment, then that too goes silent.

You congratulate the men on a job well done, but it’s a little forced. Everyone’s still thinking about the friendly fire incident, though it’s not been brought up openly. It’s a bad mark to have that happen in your first battle. You hope you’ll be able to shake it off by the time you leave the planet. Ignoring your misgivings, you call Fabian to give your report.

>Sulla here. Enemy reinforcements successfully destroyed. No sign of further enemy activity.

Fabian’s quick to respond. “Good job. I’m sending Yegor to your position to consolidate, concentrate our firepower in one spot in case there’s more coming. I also want you and your engineer units here, Fisher’s still in the process of taking the underground and he should be done shortly, but we need your engineers to help blow this place wide open.”

>Copy that, sir. I’ll send them over right away.

“Good. I don’t want to stay here any longer than necessary. Fabian out.”
>>

As his voice fades, you look to the men. Many of them have taken off their grey helmets now that the battle is over, savouring the fresh air and the opportunity to speak to each other face-to-face instead of behind a mask. You notice an equal mix of excitement, pride, and trepidation on their faces. Their first battle. It would be a rousing success, if it weren’t for that friendly fire incident. You can see that Boxer’s men are standing a little away from the rest, keeping to themselves rather than mingling with the rest of the men. You’re in the process of trying to figure out what they’re thinking when you notice Major Beck is by your side.

“You’re going to have to talk to the men, sir.”

>Boxer’s?

“All of them. You’re one of them, sir, you know how it is.”

You nod in agreement. Having risen through the ranks, you know there’s nothing more important to the ordinary trooper than brotherhood, and loyalty to each other. They stick together. But coming under fire from your own brothers can bend that bond, even break it. And they’re shinies. Their first taste of combat and they’ve gotten some of their brothers killed, or witnessed them be killed by your own shells. Things will be strained on both sides.

You don’t need to address this immediately however, you’re still on the mission. Fabian’s requested you and your men, and you shouldn’t keep him waiting. You could also talk to the commander’s involved, try and determine their state of mind and perhaps smooth things over a little. Or you could give an immediate post-battle debrief to analyse and address the situation, putting it to rest.

What will you do next?
>Debrief your men first. It’s important they hear from you a full assessment of the situation.
>Have a personal chat with Boxer. He’s an ARC, but you should make sure his men are okay.
>Have a personal chat with Joyce and Loge. They must be feeling guilty over what’s happened.

As you make your decision, you also get the idea to use what remains on the battlefield for your own purposes.

>Beck.

“Sir?”

>I want a couple techies to take some of the men out and salvage as much as they can of those droids. We’re cutoff from the rest of the Republic now and we could use every advantage we can get. Prioritise getting droids in working order and reprogrammed to fight for us.

“The men won’t like working with droids, sir.”

>I know. But Boxer’s down to half a company and it doesn’t look like we’re getting reinforcements soon. See what they can scrounge up.

“Yes sir, I’ll get on it.”

He quickly walks off toward the engineers. A couple squads should do, not enough to be missed when you head over to Fabian. It’ll be a tough job though, and you have no idea how many droids can be salvaged after being hit with artillery.

>Debrief your men first. It’s important they hear from you a full assessment of the situation.

As Beck walks off, you head to the command tent. From there you can call all the officers and NCOs of the battalion together to do a post-battle debrief. You won’t be speaking in front of all the men, since that’s impractical and the average trooper doesn’t need to know the fine details of tactics or how it went in the battle. It’ll filter down to them anyway when all the officers present debrief their own men.

When you enter the tent you turn the holotable on, and bring up a display of the battle with all the units involved. You look at it a moment as you run through what you’re going to say. Overall, it was an adequate performance for their first battle, but that friendly fire incident was a serious blunder, the kind that would require a court-martial and full review of the battalion, if one could be held. With all that’s happening there won’t be one, not for a while, but you know you’re going to have to address it. Shaking your head, you open the command channel.

>Commander Sulla to all officers. Assemble at the command tent as soon as possible, for the post-battle debrief.

Over the next few minutes the officers come in, Joyce, Loge, Goto, Boxer, and their lieutenants, before Beck’s men and Beck himself come in last. You nod to him.

>How are the preparations for salvage coming along?

“Well enough, but my men are doubtful that there’ll be anything left that’s useful. That artillery is devastating stuff, and those droids are cheap work at best, not built to last. Still, we’ll try.”

>Thank you. That’s all I need.

Straightening up, you look at all the men assembled in the room. All their faces so similar, but with slight differences between them; different hair, tattoos, even the expression on their faces. You’re all clones of the same man, but something you’ve come to realise over your years in combat is that each of you is his own person. Similar, but unique. Which makes the loss of troopers all the more painful.

Shaking off your musings, you clear your throat.
>>
>>5761813

>Alright men. We’ve gone through our first battle. Against a disorganised and weakened enemy, true, but a first taste of real combat for many of the men in this regiment. The enemy has been eliminated thanks to us. The base was hit, opening it up for Commanders Shade and Fisher, while the enemy reinforcements were stopped in their tracks, with none left to threaten us.

You flick through the holotable as you speak, highlighting the recordings of the various units around the battlefield, the bombardment of the base, the incoming reinforcements, the placement of Boxer as a delay, the bombardment of those reinforcements, etc. The men watch with rapt attention.

>The engineer companies did a good job on the fortifications. While they didn’t experience much combat themselves, it’s good for them to do this in a proper battle where there may be enemy attack. I want you all to keep on training as if that’s still the case. You never know when the enemy might show up, and with what force. If anything, we were lucky on this mission, with only a battalion’s worth of MTTs. They could have sent gunships, or tanks at us, or all three at once, and then those fortifications would have been invaluable.

>Boxer, your men performed well. Took a few casualties in that first engagement, but that’s to be expected. They managed to catch the enemy as they were deploying and did significant damage to them. And you managed to extract without any further casualties, back to our lines where the enemy was destroyed. Good work.

>Joyce and Loge, your men performed adequately, but those fire missions could have been better. Barrages weren’t fully effective or went wide too many times for me to be happy with them. And I know the men are still shinies, but you need to drill it into them. This isn’t Kamino and the simulations anymore. And our next battle might be against…
>>
>>5761815

You pause, and leave the word unsaid. Clones. Brothers. You continue.

>And, there is also one significant problem.
The friendly fire incident. You have to address it, and everyone here knows it’s coming too. Joyce and Loge are directly responsible as the COs of the siege companies, but you are also responsible for them as their CO. You’re not sure how you’ll address it. The men in Joyce, Loge, and Boxer’s companies are going to be demoralised by the incident, but you need to ensure they’re up to full combat capability. Bring the right attitude to a fight. Able to trust the men they’re fighting with.

The friendly fire. It was…

>An accident. An honest mistake. These things can happen, especially when you’re engaging the enemy at short range. Misplaced coordinates, unclear sightings. Nobody’s at fault here. You just need to do your best to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
>Unacceptable. They need to do better. You can’t allow these things to happen, not when the men are still new. They need to understand that. You can’t make mistakes, not when the galaxy is tearing itself apart.
>Your fault. You were the one who ordered them into position and they carried it out. It was your call, and you’ll take responsibility for it.

>Your fault. You were the one who ordered them into position and they carried it out. It was your call, and you’ll take responsibility for it.

Ultimately, you are responsible for the men under your command. You’re the one giving them their orders, and sending them to their deaths. It’s only fair that you admit that, and tell them as much. You can’t brush it off as a simple accident or blame it on the men themselves. It’s why you’re their commander.

>The friendly fire incident with Boxer’s men is my fault. I’ll be taking responsibility for it if there’s any inquiry or investigation. I’m your CO, and it’s only fair. I ordered them into that position and ordered the fire mission that hit them. So if anyone has any grievances, you take it up with me. I don’t want to hear any questions directed at Captains Joyce and Loge about their abilities or actions as Captains of this battalion. Am I understood?

In unison, the men reply with a loud: “Sir, yes sir!”

You can tell they mean it. Signalling that the briefing is over, you dismiss the men and let them return to their duties. There’s probably going to be some frustration directed at you in the coming days, and if the GAR ever brings itself together again you’ll have to answer for it, but for now the battalion is whole, and there won’t be simmering resentments between the men. The burdens of command.

Calling Beck and Goto to you, you inform that they’ll be taking their engineer companies to work on getting into the Neimoidian vaults. Hopefully, with their expertise, you’ll be able to break in quickly and be out of here with the contents. They nod, and you let Goto return to organise his company. You then check with Beck on the status of the droid salvage you ordered.

“We’ve found a few droids we can patch up, but it doesn’t look like there’s much left to work with. At best, we’ll have a squad of B1s. It’s not worth it, sir. Too much scrap.”

>Alright then. You tried. Now go get the company ready, I’ll be there soon.

He gives you a salute, and walks off.

Shade is there to greet you at what’s left of the entrance to the facility when you and your two engineer companies arrive. Up close, it’s clear that your bombardment had tremendous effect. There’s breaches all through the perimeter wall, and the remains of droids are littered around craters in the ground.

“Fabian’s waiting. Follow me.”

You follow him, with Beck and Goto. In the very centre of the base is a squat dome, with a lot of blaster marks and scrapped droids around it. Leading you around it, to the rear of the facility, you go down a long ramp, which leads to a wide elevator in the centre. Pressing some buttons, Shade takes you and your men down, and after about a minute you arrive at another open space at the bottom, where Fabian is waiting in front of 3 large vault doors. You suspect you’re deep enough that this place could survive an orbital bombardment, if it came to that. Not that it helped the defenders much. Around you are the signs of a violent assault, scrapped turrets and blaster residue all around. You even notice some droidekas lying in pieces around the vault doors.

The four of you walk over to Fabian. To your left, you can see Fisher conversing with some of his officers. Fabian nods at you when he sees your arrival.

“Sulla. You’re here. Well, here’s the vaults. We get all three open, take what’s inside, then get out of here. Away from this war. That’s the plan. Just need to get them open."

>Copy that, sir. Beck, Goto. What do you think?

They approach the closest vault door, a giant circular thing standing before you. Elaborately designed, with interlocking gears all around it, even you can tell that breaking in will be no easy feat. But if anyone can do it, it’ll be your engineers. You wait for them to give their assessment.

Goto’s the first to speak. “It’s going to be one hell of a job.”

Beck whistles in agreement. “Don’t think I’ve seen something like it before.”

>Can you do it?

Goto shrugs. “Sure we can. But if we mess up, it’s going to take a lot longer to have another go, depending on the damage. We’ll need to be precise, and extremely careful if we want this open first go.”

>And there might be more droid reinforcements coming.

Goto takes a deep breath. “We’ll do our best.”

He and Beck then walk to the waiting engineer companies and begin giving our orders. Some return up the elevator to get their equipment while others begin measuring the vault doors, determining the best place to begin their work.

As you watch your men get to work, you briefly wonder what’s in the vaults. Treasure, you know that much, but what? Not money, or at least not republic credits. The valuables of Neimoidia, whatever those are. Aurodium, perhaps? You knew that the currency of Hutt space was made from that valuable metal, and the Neimoidians were obsessed with money. Or it could be something else. Maybe Spice? Or something valuable to the separatist cause? They might hide something like that here. You know that these vaults were only one of many dotted around the planet, and they could hold anything.

Regardless of the contents, you’re not sure what Fabian plans to do with them. He said that he still believed in fighting for the Republic, but with the Republic you knew now split in two, you’re not sure what he’ll do with it. You suppose you could ask him, while you wait for your men to finish their work. Or you could try and talk to Shade, ask him why he’s so loyal to Fabian and his plan, or talk to Fisher, see how he’s feeling about the situation now that he’s chosen to stick with the regiment.

As you wait for your men to open the vaults, you walk over to Fabian. He’s been a bit vague with what he’s planned for these treasures, and all he’s talked about is getting off-planet, and you’d like to know what he has planned for it. You give a salute as you approach, and he gives one back.

“Sulla. What can I do for you?”

>Nothing much, commander. Just wanted to ask what we’re going to do with this treasure once we’ve got it. It’s not like we can just turn it in to the Republic treasury anymore.

“Oh, that. Well, it’s only fair I let you in on what I’m thinking. I was planning to brief the regiment on it once we secured this anyway.” He sighs. “Our original mission objectives were to take it and secure it for the Republic. The Chancellor himself expressed an interest in securing these vaults, probably to shore up the treasury. Now he’s dead and we have no clue which side has control of the money, if either of them do at all. Which means none of us are getting paid and neither is anyone else. So I’m requisitioning this in the name of the Grand Army, and using what we find here to fund us wherever we travel. We’re effectively cut off from the rest of the Republic now, and unless we have leverage or pick a side, nobody’s going to jump in and help us resupply. This is our leverage.”

You reflect on his words. It makes sense. With Fabian and the rest of you going neutral, it’s only going to make it tougher to get by without the support of one of the sides in this new war. It’s a sound plan. But what will happen when the money runs out?

“I’ve already negotiated us a ship. The Captain will take us off-planet, to wherever we want, in exchange for some of the treasure. And after that, we continue to take the fight to the separatists. Let the jedi and General Skywalker battle it out. We won’t be getting involved.”

He’s neglecting to mention the unknowns in his plan. Where you can find separatists to fight. How you’ll do it, with just a regiment. And how long you’ll keep on fighting? This war was so close to ending. But, you think, nothing’s certain now, and it looks like it’ll stay that way for a long while.
>>
>>5764408

You’re still thinking about it when you hear someone shout.

“Everybody back! Back now! Out of the way!”

You turn and see several squads of your engineers moving everyone back from the vault doors. Looks like they’re ready to blow. Sure enough, as soon as they’ve moved everyone to a safe distance, one of them gives a signal and the room is split by a blinding light that follows the edges of each door, followed by two ground-shaking thuds. There’s smoke everywhere, and an acrid smell in the air. The vaults are open.

Stepping through the smoke, waving it away, you see that two of the gigantic doors are lying on the floor, though the third is still in position, burn marks all around it’s exterior. Looks like your men only managed to get two open. Damn. Better than nothing, you suppose.

Stepping through the first door, you’re met with piles upon piles of gleaming metal. Aurodium ingots, arranged into tidy piles that sit snugly on the tall shelves that go from the floor to the roof of the room. It’s a massive hoard. What’s here must be worth millions of credits, at least. And the Neimoidians have been hoarding this for who knows how long, in one of many vaults scattered across the planet! They’ve earned their reputation as money-grubbers, that’s for sure.

You see some men reaching out to touch the golden bounty, but you’re quick to yell out.

>Hold it! Nobody touches this without my or Commander Fabian’s permission! I want guards set up at the entrance, on the double. And if anything goes missing there’ll be hell to pay.

The men are quick to obey, and you see Fabian nodding approvingly in your direction. With that done, you go check out the other vault. It’s much the same, and Beck and Goto are standing in the middle looking at the piles of treasure surrounding them. Before you can go speak to them however, one of your engineers rushes up to you and salutes.

“Sir.”

>What is it trooper?

“I’ve been doing some scans of the vault, sir. Looking for traps and the like. But I’ve found something interesting, a concealed alcove with a doorway resistant to scanning. Doesn’t show up on the facility plans, sir. Almost wouldn’t have caught it if I wasn’t flipping through my scanner frequencies. Thought you ought to know.”

>Can you open it?

“I can. Was about to ask you permission, sir.

>Of course. Lead the way.

You walk with the trooper to a wall inside the vault, waving to Beck and Goto to follow you. You’re at the far end when the trooper stops in front of a blank wall, and gently pushes on it. Sure enough, shadows outlining a small doorway appear, and the wall slides in, then to the side. In front is another door, secure it seems. The trooper quickly applies a pliable material to the frame, and motions for you all to step back and turn around. You do so, and a moment later you hear a sharp hissing noise and light shining from behind you. And then, a thud. Turning around, you see a small room at the other end, dark, and much smaller than the vault you’re standing in.

Stepping through the doorway, your eyes take a moment to adjust to the dim light before the trooper who discovered it flips a switch. You’re in some kind of workshop, tools and machines scattered about the place. And, in the centre of the room, standing tall and motionless, is a super-tactical droid.

The generals of the droid armies when there’s no flesh and blood entity to lead them, cold and calculating, they’re utterly lethal. There’s a standing order across the entire GAR to recover them, intact if possible, but to this day not one has been recovered undamaged. They have a tendency to self-destruct when close to capture. It’s said even Jedi have trouble beating them. And here’s one standing in front of you, deactivated and completely harmless.

What is it doing here? Why is it in a hidden part of the vault? What use would a Neimoidian have for one of these? You’ve never come across something like this in your entire career. Still, this thing’s of almost inestimable worth to the GAR. The separatist secrets that it might hold within it…

What are you going to do?
>Reactivate it. You want to question it, and there’s no better place to do it than here.
>Take it with you. You’re not out of the woods yet, you want to get away from any clanker reinforcements before you mess with this thing.
>Try and hack into it. Your engineers are trained for it, and the data it contains is going to be a motherload of information.
>Look around the room for some clue to its purpose. This obviously isn’t a normal droid. But what could it be for?

We should investigate it, and then take it. We can hack into it or reactivate it later. We should probably question it, but it would be wise to remove the self-destruct measure before we do such a thing.

In that order. Let's see if we can take any of the machines, tools, and schematics lying around the workshop with us. If we've got room for tons of ingots, we've got room for a small workshop. We have plenty of time to hack it and repurpose it aboard the ship.

The 165th really is getting closer to becoming the Clone equivalent of Iron Warriors, minus the bitterness.

You’re taking this thing with you. An intact super-tactical droid? Who knows what kind of secrets it holds within its memory banks. Separatist tactics, codes, base locations, maybe more. You won’t know until you find out. But you can’t do it here. Not with separatists still in the area. You’ll pack it up with the rest of the treasure and examine it more closely when you’re safe and off-planet. But, while you do, you might as well do your best to investigate this workshop and find out what exactly this droid is doing here. You doubt there’s many super-tactical droids locked up in secret rooms of separatist vaults, so what makes this one so special?

>Beck, get some men and start packing up everything in here. We’re taking this droid and this workshop with us. And tell them to look out for clues on this thing’s purpose. I want to know what it’s doing here.

“Copy that sir.”

He walks out of the room, leaving you with Goto and the trooper who discovered this place.

>Any ideas, Goto?

He shrugs. “None sir. I’m just as clueless as you are. You’d think it would have fought us up top instead of lying deactivated down here.”

The other trooper shakes his head. “No, it must have been left here long before we got here. I don’t think there’s any way to open the door from the inside. Probably left here by the owner of this room.”

“But who just leaves a super-tactical lying about?”

It’s a strange one. Droids like this one are about the most valuable ground combatant in the separatist arsenal. They’re basically the clanker equivalent of a jedi, a general of entire armies, but also fearsome in personal combat as well. Yet here this one is, deactivated and gathering dust. While you wait for Beck to return with the men, you rummage through the various pieces of equipment lying about, looking for a clue to this droid’s origins.
>>
>>5765205

The workshop, if that’s what it is, is small, almost nothing in comparison to the gigantic vault outside. Everything in here looks haphazardly thrown together, a random mix of equipment you don’t recognise. Some desks and shelves, but beyond that you don’t know what anything in this room does. Walking over to one, you pick up a datapad, and turn it over. It’s completely unremarkable, except for the initials R.S stamped on it. Nothing else. It could stand for anyone.

Leaving the datapad, you walk over to a desk and push some buttons. It turns on, but requires a password. You turn it off. Don’t think you’re going to be that lucky.

Goto’s voice rings out. “Hey, look at this.”

>What is it?

“Don’t know. A list of some starships and their parts. Don’t recognise most of these. Hell, there’s even a Marauder here, old rustbucket. Don’t think we use those anymore.”

>Can you tell what it’s for?

“No sir. The list seems to be going by date, but that doesn’t help much.”

>What’s the most recent one?

“Couple decades ago. Some engine, the X-C 2. Never heard of it. Some seppie thing perhaps? I know those Neimoidians have been a pain for the Republic a long time before this war started.”

You shrug in answer, and return back to looking. You have no clue what this place is for. There’s some equipment that’s obviously meant for modifying the tactical droid, but there’s a lot more of the files and bulky things that you’ve never seen before. At a guess, you’d say that this place definitely is a workshop of some kind, or at least the equipment from one since you doubt someone would actually work in a secret vault, but you have no idea what they would be making, or designing. You’ll just have to keep on digging.

Holy shit, this is one of Raith Sienar's hideouts. He probably spent time working on projects here after fleeing from the Republic Senate. For context, he designed Palpatine's Star Courier ship and it's engine, and would go on to develop the TIE series of fighters. If we identify this, it's proof Palpatine was playing both sides of the war. This revealation could change everything for everyone under Fabian's command. We'll get our hands on advanced tech either way, but who knows how this bombshell would affect our men. It's strange that Raith was working on a tactical droid, given he usually works on ships.
>>
>>5765230
Well that's a shame innit, no dice.
>>
>>5765230
I guess we'll need to do a bit more digging once we get on the ship.
>>

It seems we won't have another chance at uncovering the identity of the workshop's owner Raith until we have time to investigate on the ship and look at the datapad, but the lack of ways to open the door from the inside implies that he was held here against his will. That being said, we have a Super Tactical Droid clearly worked on by someone from the Republic given the list of starship parts, a whole workshop, and files containing schematics for all kinds of new tech. Let's make it a priority to ask Fabian who exactly our getaway pilots are, and have the strongest Clones guard this stash. It's nowhere near as conspicuous as precious metals, but who knows who aboard the ship might be waiting for us. Our next priority should be figuring out what we do with all of this. Schematics for ships, droids, and likely weapons are in our possession along with the STD kek, which probably kept the owner plenty of company while he was alone in the workshop. The droid might know who R.S is and even have a personality installed given the context. However we plan to use these, we'll need a place to crash so we can establish the logistics to secure materials for manufacturing armaments and technologies as well as developing both. Some Clones should be trained to work with the machines, new tech, and others with multiple squadrons of droids if we produce them. As we have no means of securing new troops for the time being, we should keep the Clones we have better equipped to increase their chance of survival. Droids, better gear, and raw materials will only keep us going for so long, so recruits should be our objective once we're settled. That leaves one question: where is Raith and what is he up to? Palpatine's death, the Senate's ire, and his stint as a Neimoidian prisoner put him on the run. If Skywalker found out about Raith's connection with Palpatine, he'd see the bigger picture and we wouldn't be having this war in the first place; there's no way he's working for him, and certainly no Hutt. This means we won't have to worry about retaliation from Raith, but if he isn't dead, he most definitely has a sponsor we don't know about. We have no idea who that could be, and that's concerning.

While the dice roll failed, since you correctly guessed that all this belongs to Raith Sienar I'll be treating it as a quasi-success. So in-character you'll realise this belongs to him, but as to why the disgraced former director of Sienar Systems has a secret room with a super-tactical droid in a Neimoidian vault is something you'll have to find out later. I'll also say that he wasn't stuck there unwillingly, I meant the "only opens from the outside" bit to indicate it's more of a storeroom for his stuff, not that he got locked up by some Neimoidians for whatever reason.
>>
>>5766281
That's pretty generous, but if it is fine with you, then is going to change a lot of things for sure. The vault and its contents are proof that Palpatine was playing both sides of the war, acting against the rest of the Senate given Raith's actions, knowingly sent Clones to their deaths in countless farces of battles against droids he controlled, and ironically enough committing treason. If Sulla's men and Fabian's forces proclaimed loyalty to the Republic as they said, not necessarily with Organa, our priority will likely be to spread word as much as possible and b-line it to whoever has authority to declare Palpatine as having committed treason. The sooner it's taken care of, the sooner the fighting ceases and Clones stop dying. An overwhelming majority of Clones are likely to recognize this information, but we'll have to be wary of the Republic navy. Most of them are regular humans and a large chunk of the will have their own agendas outside of Skywalker vs. Organa, whether out of spite for Clones or for an industrial military takeover. Who knows what Tarkin is thinking right now. All the same, we should document everything we found here. Put it on video, take photos, scan and copy documents, make physical and digital copies of both and do it again and again. Make the evidence unfuckable. Once we do, spam send it all to every Clone frequency we identify. The STD, separatist tactics, vault location, datapad, and list of Republican ships and parts alone are evidence enough; any schematics of unreleased technology can stay hidden for now. Sulla and the others are likely keen enough to realize there's a conspiracy beyond what the impending civil war appears to be, so we'll have to figure out how to stay on the move and disperse even though the news will spread like wildfire. Let's avoid being reliant on anyone with a grudge against Clones. Organa is likely to listen once it all reaches his ears, but that's uncertain with Skywalker, even if he's popular among the Clones for good reason. Separatists other than Neimoidians and Geonosians will have mixed reactions, but let's not make any bets with them. The war just became a different one for the Clones, starting with those on Cato Neimoidia. Goddamn QM, you have me on the edge of my seat.
>>
>>5766334
Thanks for being so interested anon. I'll say this much: There's a lot of material in this vault, but no definitive proof that Palpatine's been playing both sides. Sienar is already known as the builder of Maul's Infiltrator, and he's been caught supplying fighters to both sides, and been censored by the Senate as a result. There's nothing you know (so far) that links him directly to Palpatine. On its own this vault will no be enough to blow the conspiracy of the sith wide open; for that, you're going to have to do a lot more digging.

You look through all the equipment here. thoroughly, piece by piece, until Beck returns with a couple squads of men. You haven’t found anything. You have to admit, you have no clue what this stuff is for, and that’s probably why you can’t figure any of it out. That droid could probably tell you, but that comes with a whole other set of unknowns. Like if it’s going to try and kill you as soon as you activate it. You shrug, and give permission for Beck and his men to begin moving everything. You hang on to that initialled datapad though. The mysterious R.S intrigues you.

They begin with the super-tactical, carefully removing it from its housing and carrying it out of the room, before placing it on a hovercart waiting outside. A few minutes alter they return, and begin dismantling and moving the stuff in here one by one, desks, shelves, boxes, machines. Looking through the doorway as they go through it, you can see the rest of the battalion is moving all the treasure, stacking the piles of Aurodium on hovercarts and taking them to the elevator. Fabian’s going to notice the extra equipment soon though, and he’ll probably have some questions. You just wish you had some answers to give him.

“What’s that Commander?”

It’s Goto, pointing at the datapad you’re holding.

>Oh, this? Just something I found. Nothing interesting on it other than some markings, R.S. You know anyone by those initials?

“Yes sir, lots of people. Don’t think any of them own any super-tacs though. Or secret vaults.”

>Ah well, was worth a shot. You find anything?

“No sir. Can’t tell what most of this stuff does, besides, not a lot of it is powered. The terminals are all password locked. Been going through this list of starships and their parts, but I can’t figure out anything. There’s starfighters here, a couple corvettes. Even a star courier. It’s just a list I think, maybe a shipping manifest.”

>There’s really nothing there?

“Maybe. I know a lot of this stuff was built by Republic Sienar Systems, but they’re one of the bigger companies out there, so I’m not sure.”

>Sienar Systems?

“A shipwright. Builds and designs ships and starfighters. Headed by Raith Sienar, or, was. The company’s-

>Wait. That name. Raith Sienar.

You take out the datapad. Sure enough, on the back is the finely engraved initials of R.S.

“R.S? Sir, you don’t think that’s-

>Is there anything on that list that isn’t designed or built by Sienar Systems?

Goto takes a moment to read through it all. “No sir. And this list goes back long before the war.”
You look at him. A Republic designer with a secret vault on Cato Neimoidia? And a history, going back long before these Clone Wars started. This whole thing is weirder than that Force the jedi use, and you suspect it’s only going to get stranger.

>We’re taking this to Fabian.
>>
>>5766392
You walk out into the vault, which is rapidly being emptied by the men. You see some of Shade and Fisher’s men too, helping carry the heavy metals to waiting carts that they push to the elevator that leads to the surface. Accompanies by Goto, you head straight for Fabian, who’s with Shade and Fisher themselves, as they examine a datapad, probably the inventory of what’s here. Fabian looks up as you approach.

“Sulla. Saw that droid your men were carting out. What the hell did you find back there?”

>Sir. I’m not entirely sure, but I believe the droid and the contents of the room were the property of a Raith Sienar. And they’ve been his property for a while.

“Sienar? Show me.”

You hand him the initialled datapad, and motion for Goto to show him the ships and parts list. He’s quiet as he reads through it.

“Sienar Systems was dissolved recently.”

>Bankrupt?

“Supplying the enemy. And there was that Sith incident, before our time. Sienar’s had a cloud hanging over it ever since. I wonder…”

He looks at the list, then back at you.

“They were almost as big as KDY and Corellia. Unusual for the Senate to shut down such a big corp. They say the company was just selling, or at least that’s what went in the official Senate reports. But these, they go back a long time.” He shrugs.

“Something for Republic Intelligence, if it still exists. Though I don’t think either side would be much interested. For now. I want you to focus on getting all this equipment you’ve found out, and then help out with moving all the treasure. After that we’ll get some of your engineers to open up that droid and see what secrets it holds.”

You nod, but you can’t help but feel that the droid might have other uses. Super-tacticals are rare, and extremely useful. It’s probably worth a lot, not as much as the treasure, sure, but it might be a useful bargaining tool. Or, perhaps, you could reprogram it and use its tactical abilities to serve the Republic, instead of the separatists. There’s also the matter of why it was down there, and what exactly Raith Sienar has to do with it. Then again, maybe the passcodes and other separatist protocols would be of better use to you.

What shall you do?
>Obey Fabian and hack the droid. Those separatist codes would go a long, long way when you take the fight to them.
>Suggest you keep it and sell it instead. You never know when you might need some leverage on some unscrupulous bounty hunter or corporate figure.
>Suggest you keep the droid, and try to reprogram it. Having a super-tactical droid giving you strategic advice would be invaluable.
>Request permission to interrogate the droid. You’d like to find out more about its master and why it was hidden away.
>Request permission to focus on hacking the datapads and terminals you’ve found. You’re sure there’s more to why Sienar had them placed in a secret vault.

Have our computer wizards crack at it while the rest of us finish moving all the stuff. Apart from certain information, it might have context for what the machines do and what they were doing in the vault. We can hold off on hacking the STD until we finish hauling the equipment and get the droid in a secure space, just in case it goes berserk.

>Sir, I’d like permission to focus on hacking the equipment we’ve found. I’m sure there’s a reason Sienar had them hidden away, and any data we recover might turn out to be useful in the coming days.

Fabian frowns, but doesn’t immediately refuse. He takes a moment to look back at the initialled datapad, then shrugs.

“Well, alright then. But focus on getting the rest of this bounty packed up first. You can focus on Sienar’s data after that. And there better be something good, otherwise we’ll be wasting precious time.”

>Thank you, sir. I’ll get right on it.

You salute him, and he returns it before dismissing you.

Over the next hour or so you help organise the looting of the vaults, transferring their gleaming contents to waiting carts and pallets that are taken up to the surface, where Shade’s A5 Juggernauts are being cleared of all the spare room they can manage to hold the Neimoidian treasure. There’s barely enough room for it all, and the Juggernauts are overloaded, but you somehow manage to pack it all in. It’s an intensive process, made all the more stressful from the fear of an incoming separatist attack, but none comes. It looks like you might actually get to keep it.

Checking in with Fisher, who’s managing the inventory, the full load that you’ve recovered amounts to about 50 million credits worth, on top of the equipment you recovered from Sienar’s vault. You could buy a star destroyer with that amount of money. There’s also that one vault you failed to open, which probably holds another 25 million credits worth, but Fabian’s still worried about a separatist counterattack and is ordering you to leave it. Looks like those Neimoidians will get to keep at least something for themselves, if they ever return to reclaim it.

Stepping outside after all your work, you feel the cool breeze on your face as the wind starts to pick up. Above you, the skies are clear, bright blue; and if you squint your eyes you think you can even see some of the ships of the fleet up there. The valley seems oddly peaceful after the violence it was subjected to only a few hours before. The unloading of the vaults hasn’t been completed yet, but you’re no longer needed down there. So, you walk over to Goto, who’s inspecting some of the equipment you took from Sienar’s hidden room.
>>
>>5767291

“Sir. No seppie reinforcements. Strange. You’d think those greedy worms would be jumping up and down to reclaim their treasure. I wonder what they’re up to now?”

>Could be they know it’s too late to stop us. Or maybe they’re trying to get off-planet themselves. Could be any reason. I’m just glad they haven’t sent more waves at us.

“I’ll agree with you on that, sir.”

>How’s the equipment? Got any progress on where we can start?

At this, he smiles, and he pulls up a datapad left lying on one of the boxes in front of him.

“Well sir, I think we’ve managed to decipher some of what this stuff does. Figuring out it belongs to Raith Sienar and knowing what he does has helped a lot. The men haven’t begun the proper hacking, they’re still reprogramming some of the R2 units, but we think we’ve identified four areas of interest.”

He moves to a big cube-like machine, with a small terminal embedded in the side, and some ports for various droids. It looks heavy duty.

“This we think is one of the main data storage drives. Holds a lot. No clue what exactly though, but we’re presuming it’s for starship designs, weapons, that kind of thing, since that’s Sienar’s specialisation. The likes of KDY would kill to get their hands on this, the seppies too. With Sienar Systems dismantled, there’s probably not a lot of these to go around. And we have 8.”

He then moves on to several boxes of slates and smaller terminals, the kind you could carry around yourself without the use of heavy equipment. They’re organised in tidy piles on a shelf.

“We actually broke some of these already, turns out it’s a bunch of financial data. Really boring stuff, the kind a Muun would die for. The actual security is pretty easy to get through, but we’re bred for combat not banking, and I don’t know how much we’d be able to find in this. Still, it could be a good source for Sienar’s business partners, or other things he might have spent his money on.”

Moving on, he comes to a different pile of dataslates and terminals, though you can’t tell the difference between this and the one you just looked at.

“These are all stamped with the initials of Raith Sienar. The security is tighter than those financials too. Guessing these are his personal records, diaries maybe, the kind of things he wanted to keep off the books. No telling what’s in that, sir.”

He shrugs, and leads you to a pile of different equipment, this one seeming much more haphazard, desks and slates that look older and more worn.

“This, we got no clue. Just a mix-match of things that didn’t fit the other categories. A lot of old stuff, going back decades. Looks like it was meant for deep storage. Still, there might be something interesting on it. Never know what skeletons in the closet these corporate types might be hiding.”
>>
>>5767294

He turns to you. “And that’s it, sir. And there’s that droid which had a bunch of equipment hooked up to it, which we still haven’t figured out. But I’m presuming you want to look at this stuff first.”

>That’s correct. So where are you going to start?

“I was actually going to go to you and ask what you wanted us to start on, sir. We can start immediately, though we’ll only have time for one, I think. That treasure’s going to be packed up soon and I need to get all this packed up with it.”

Which means that you’ll likely have to leave the rest for when you’re on the ship, once you get there. That and that super-tactical droid. Still, figuring out at least one part of this puzzle will be a good enough start.

What shall you begin with?

Choose ONE from the list to begin investigating.

Updating tomorrow. Having too much fun writing this new update I've done more than I planned and need to take a break, kek. Will come a little early, about 12 hours from now, and then another update at the usual time that will probably mark a proper break for a while since I've been going at this for... holy shit a full month. 30000 words on my doc. Thanks anons for voting and playing the quest.

>We’ll start with the personal records. I want to know how Raith Sienar thinks, and the secrets he keeps close to him. It’ll probably give us some hints to the purpose of that secret room too.

Goto nods. “Copy that, sir. I’ll tell the men to get right on it. We’ll have the first few slates for you soon.”

You thank him, and let him get to work. While you wait, you idly wander the immediate area, inspecting the equipment from the vault and listening to the idle conversation of the soldiers you pass by. A lot of it seems triumphant, proud of themselves for taking the vault and stealing the Neimoidian treasure, but you also detect and undercurrent of concern with the war, how it’s going to develop now that the Republic’s split into two. You’re tempted to approach them and tell them that the Republic will stand strong once all this is over, that you’ll see them through it to the end, but you’re not so sure of that yourself. Who knows when this thing will stop, or if it ever will?

It's only a few minutes before Goto finds you again and motions you to follow him. You do so, and are lead to a small field tent buzzing with terminals and other technical equipment. There’s several of your engineers here, and they’re all hunched over terminals hooked to the dataslates of Raith Sienar.

“We’re still working on a few, but we’ve cracked the code for almost all of them, enough that I think you’ll get what you want out of them, sir. We’ve identified a rough period when they were written, going from only a few years before the war started to about a couple months ago, probably when Sienar locked up the room for good. Guessing he hasn’t been able to come back with the invasion, might have even hoped to recover all this once the war was over. I’ll let you read over these, sir, and I’ll tell you if we find anything else interesting.”

>Thank you, Goto. Your efforts are much appreciated. And give these men some extra grog rations once they’re done for the day, okay?

“Yes sir.” He says with a smile.

You let him go back to work supervising the hacking, and start looking through the datapads. Sifting through them, you skip over the more inane communications with Senators for funding and Sienar Systems designers, instead focusing on the things he seems most interested in. There’s not much at first glance, a lot of personal notes about a new starfighter he was designing and his hopes for it, mostly how successful it was going to be, though he doesn’t mention it by name or give any hard details on what it does. A lot of snobbery and gossip about the members of Coruscanti society. General annoyance with his rivals, KDY and CEC, how his new starfighter is “going to put their arrogant asses in the ground”. The kind of thing you’d expect from an important designer like Sienar.
>>
>>5768661

One thing does catch your eye though. There’s several mentions of a Tarkin in these files, an individual from the influential family that controls Eriadu, the staging ground for the Eighteenth Army, right on the frontlines with the Separatists in the South. Could he be talking about Admiral Tarkin, first Moff of the Greater Seswenna sector? Now that’s an influential figure, these days one of the most powerful men in the Republic. You hone in on mentions of him, finally coming across a sizable diary entry from only a few months ago that talks about Tarkin and a new project Sienar had a hand in.

“That fool Tarkin is plunging ahead with the Battle Planetoid design. I’ve told him it’s dangerous, foolish to even consider it, but all he sees is the glory and power he could wield with it. I should have never presented him with the idea. The man’s tenacity and single-mindedness unnerves me. Still, the Chancellor has expressed a great interest in it, and still is asking if I would be willing to work on the idea further, but I think I shall at last refuse. Too much can go wrong with it, and I’ve had enough of wonder weapons that will solve every problem that might come up. If anything, it will provoke even greater dissatisfaction with the current system, or the new one that is to come. Let others take the credit.”

Interesting. So, he’s been involved with Tarkin on some important project, though it seems like he won’t be contributing to it. You have no idea what a Battle Planetoid would be though. Some new starship design? Moving on, you come across a communication from Tarkin himself, apparently in relation to this project, one of the last communications Sienar received on these datapads.

The Chancellor is disappointed to hear that you do not believe in the merit of your own ideas, but he is willing to overlook it in light of the fruit of your other projects, which I myself also have great hopes for. However, selling ships to the Separatists was a foolish move, and I’m afraid there was really nothing we could do to prevent your company’s dissolution; it would have been too obvious that you are favoured, and the Senate does retain a modicum of power. Still, the Chancellor has assured me that you’ll have a place in the coming new order, for “services rendered” and there is an expectation that the name of Sienar will be known in the highest circles in the coming years. I look forward to the results of your future projects.

Attached to the communication is also a personal note by Sienar:

“That arrogant ass. Of course he didn’t intervene on my behalf. I’m not sure if I should be relieved or worried by that kind of talk. The Chancellor’s guarantees are reassuring, but what I suspect is about to happen will be… different. Much different from what we have now. I’m not sure if I will enjoy it. Still, I need friends in high places, and I at least have my uses.”
>>
>>5768663

He’s got connections to the Chancellor? Strange, you wouldn’t think the Chancellor of all people would be so interested in a starship designer, especially after he’s been censored by the Senate itself. You wonder what Sienar had done to earn such high esteem? And you don’t have any clue about the finer details of Coruscant politics, but it’s strikes you as strange that Sienar would have such high connections in the Republic yet still have all this material in a Separatist vault. Reading through, you don’t come across anything more, but it leaves you with a lot of questions. What was Sienar designing? And why were Tarkin and the Chancellor so interested in someone who had been selling to the Separatists? You’re still deep in thought when Goto calls out.

“Sir! I think we’ve found something interesting.”

You shake out of your reverie, and walk over to him.

“We just broke through the security on these pads, sir. Looks to be notes and designs for that super-tac.”

You take them from him and give them a quick read through. It’s a collection of schematics, that’s for sure, but it takes you a moment to realise what they’re showing. Among other things, it lists a range of modifications that have been made to the super-tactical, adding onto the strategic and command abilities it came with. The data-storage module has been completely replaced, along with a new personality module, and an advanced combat matrix. Is this droid… Sienar’s personal assistant? Or bodyguard?

>What is this, Goto?

“A damn advanced droid, that’s for sure. Here’s a smug little note he wrote for himself.”

You take the proffered tablet and read it.

“The design has been improved. Not something for mass production I don’t think, but they wouldn’t be interested anyway. This will be very useful indeed. All I have to do is ask and it will project all my projects, communications, etc. and I’m interested to see what its tactical matrices will do when applied to engineering projects. Better than those stupid R2 units at least. It might even replace me if I’m not careful. Haha. My only fear is some KDY spy trying to steal it, but the Neimoidians should take care of that. I’ve been assured of their discretion.”
>>
>>5768665

>So the droid has everything Sienar’s ever worked on in it?

“Think so, sir. Have to actually dig into it to find out. Or reactivate it. Might be useful to ask it what it last saw, and what Sienar’s up to now.”

You take a moment to think. This is a lot of information. Not conclusive though, you’ll probably have to dig into the rest of the loot to get the full picture of Sienar’s plans and what he’s been doing. But some very interesting leads here, and some things you’re not entirely sure about, like those connections to the deceased Chancellor and Tarkin. What was all that about you wonder? You better go report your findings to Fabian anyway, the regiment will probably be moving out soon.

A few minutes later you’re at the entrance to the bunker, where Fabian is supervising the last of the treasure being loaded up.

>Sir.

“Sulla. So why does a renowned starship designer have a secret vault on Neimoidia?”

What have you found?

>Give him a rundown on everything. The intriguing links to the Chancellor and Tarkin, and the custom droid which you suspect has even more information that the likes of KDY would jump at to own.
>Just tell him about the droid, you’re not sure about that Chancellor and Tarkin stuff yourself, and you need more time to investigate.

Rough sketch of what I had planned is this: Darth Jar Jar is reflecting on how his plan is coming to fruition, now that his apprentice Sidious is dead and the galaxy divided he can concentrate on his true plan: conquering and ruling the galaxy with a clone army of Anakins! Then he wakes up in the middle of a speech in the senate and realises it was all a dream. Or was it?

You explain to him all you’ve found. Sienar and his designs, this “Battle Planetoid” he’s created, and how the two most powerful men in the Republic were interested in him, even going so far as to go behind the Senate’s back. It’s strange, but you have no idea why the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic would be so interested in a starship designer, even willing to ignore the Senate in the matter. You guess you’ll have to go through the other data to get the full picture, or talk to the droid. And of course, you also mention the droid, and the modifications it contains, including the likelihood of it holding all of Sienar’s designs. Fabian listens in silence as you explain, and once you’re done he stands awhile in thought.

“I see. Something strange is going on with the Chancellor there, and I am intrigued, but for now that’s not our priority. It seems like that droid may be more useful than we thought. When we get on the ship I’ll want you to take a look at it, see if you can’t get it to give up Sienar’s secrets willingly, and hack it if it doesn’t comply.”

>Yes sir.

“Also, I heard what happened with your men earlier, and how you’ve taken responsibility for it. In normal circumstances I’d have to make a report and get you reviewed by an internal board, maybe even a court-martial, but since everything’s pure chaos right now and I need my battalion commanders, I’ll overlook it so long as it doesn’t happen again. Otherwise we’re going to have a very long chat.”

>Thank you sir.

“Don’t mention it. I’m going to call a regimental meeting soon to outline the situation and what we’ll do next, make sure you’re there.”

>Copy that.

You salute him, and return back to Goto and the engineers. They’ve finished hacking all of Sienar’s personal data and are in the middle of packing it up, so you help them until you get the notification from Fabian about the meeting. Leaving with Goto, you head to the A6 Juggernaut that Fabian commands from, a massive mobile tank that’s one of the heaviest vehicles in the Republic arsenal. In a temporary command tent beneath the shade of that giant beast, you and the rest of the regimental commanders and captains gather around Shade and a holotable.

Once everyone who’s at the base is there, Fabian begins.

“Well men, we’ve done some good work today. We’ve struck a blow to what remains of the separatists and we’ve secured their treasure for ourselves. I know there’s a lot of uncertainty right now, and you’re probably wondering what’s going to happen next, so I’ll tell you: We’re leaving this planet, and going off to fight the separatists wherever we’re needed. I’ve secured us transport on a ship in the fleet with some of the bounty we’ve recovered, and with the rest of it we’ll have enough to keep ourselves resupplied for a long while to come. And I’ve been in contact with other commanders who don’t like the thought of going against their brothers, and they’ll be coming with us. We won’t be fighting alone, I can guarantee you that. As for-

Before he can speak, Shade quickly steps across the room to whisper in the Commander’s ear. His eyes wide a moment, before turning grave. He nods, once.

“Men. I’ve just received word. The news has come through and Coruscant has fallen to General Sky-

But before he can utter the name a loud ping rings through the tent, from the comms console just behind him. A priority transmission. The first in a while. Fabian looks surprised, then presses a button on the holotable, and the hologram of an alien figure appears for all to see.

“This is Jedi General Plo Koon to all forces loyal to the Republic. I am-

The transmission is suddenly paused.

“Everyone out. Shade, Fisher, and Sulla, stay here. Shade, patch me through to Yegor, now.”

The men are quick to obey, yourself and Fisher standing in place while Shade moves around one of the terminals. Soon enough, the glowing blue figure of Yegor also appears standing next to you. Fabian glances at him.

“You receiving it?”

Yegor nods. “Yes sir.”

“Alright. We’ll watch it together.”

He presses a button on the holotable, and the transmission continues.

-sending this transmission to all republic forces on the planet. I am requesting that all forces loyal to the Republic rally themselves to my position, in the attached coordinates to this message. I will state to all units of the Grand Army that I do not have any intentions to overthrow the Republic, the Chancellor, or any other institution of the state. I implore all units to stop fighting if they can, and to surrender rather than let themselves be destroyed if they cannot. However, for obvious reasons I am not willing to give myself up to forces obeying the orders of Skywalker. If there emerges an authority who reliably represents all those forces loyal to General Skywalker, then I will be willing to negotiate with them, but until then I will do all in my power to preserve the life of my men, and all the clones under my command.”
>>
>>5769200

The message ends. The room is silent, except for the buzzing of Yegor’s hologram. Then, Fabian gives a sigh, and shakes his head.

“This is bad. We need to get out of here as quickly as possible. Men, return to your battalions and get them ready for departure. I hope to reach the landing site by evening. For those friendly units joining us, you’ll need to identify them by password. The password to identify will be “We’ll scrap any clankers we see!” Response: “It’s a waste of ammo!” Got it? Alright, dismissed. We leave in 30 minutes.”

You all nod, and the room darkens as the holograms disappear. You begin to file out, back outside where your battalions await. You take a breath of fresh air as you do, before noticing some flashing in the sky. Looking up, you see distant lights shining and fading directly above you, before one big one outshines all the rest for a brief moment. What is-?

“That was the Justice. A Venator class.”

It’s Shade, standing next to you with his helmet on. He too is looking at the sky. He turns to you.

“There’s going to be a lot more of that soon enough.” And with those words, he walks off.
>>
>>5769202

You can feel the tension simmering amongst the men as you march to the location Fabian’s picked out as a landing zone. The only topic of discussion is all the latest news, from space and the ground as fighting breaks out across the planet with an even greater intensity than before. Now that Coruscant’s been taken and General Plo has made his move the lines are being drawn, and the clones are marching in step with their orders. The men are muttering and whispering to themselves, reciting all the latest open transmissions.

“You hear about the 300th? Heard they got wiped out to a man.”

“442nd still holding out. Commander Neyin is a tough one.”

“Heard most of the bridge cities have fallen to forces loyal to Skywalker.”

“What do you think’s happening to Kamino? I still have some friends there…”

“The Neimoidians aren’t showing their heads at all.”

There’s no way to tell who’s winning from the latest broadcasts. A lot of them are patchy, or so basic they leave you without any context. You should probably enforce some discipline in the men and put an end to their speculations, but you don’t have the heart for it. They should enjoy the free time while it lasts. You suspect that everyone’s going to be busy from now on.

It’s approaching twilight when you eventually reach the top of a wide basin, a perfect landing zone for a ship you can use. However, there’s no ship waiting, and you can’t see any sign of those other clone forces Fabian talked about. The regiment halts, and begins to unwind after the battle and long march you’ve had to endure.

You’re debating whether to contact Fabian when he calls you.

“The ship’s not here, but that’s to be expected with the battle going on. Spread the men out. I don’t want to get hit by artillery or an air strike. Further orders to follow.”
>>
>>5769203

You obey, and order the men to take up wide defensive positions, but to still be ready for departure. You wait a while, and after an hour when it doesn’t seem like the situation’s going to change, you order the men to get some rest and sentries to be posted. It looks like the other battalions are doing the same. Once you’re satisfied that everything is taken care of, you leave Beck in charge and go get some rest while you can. If you’ve learnt anything over the years it’s that sleep is the most valuable thing you can have, and you shouldn’t waste any opportunity to get some. You drift into darkness, but it seems like only a few minutes when you open your eyes again and see that it’s the middle of the night, and someone’s calling out to you. It’s Beck.

“Sir.”

>Beck? What is it?

“Report from Goto, sir. His men have encountered other clones.”

>Friendlies?

“Not sure. He requested your presence ASAP.”

>Alright. Let’s go.

Quickly grabbing your helmet and sidearm, you head out to his position. There’s men rushing about your impromptu camp, and you notice that there’s a lot of lights moving around the other battalions too. After a few minutes, you reach Goto’s position, which is at a basic checkpoint they’ve set up. He’s standing behind some boxes, and a little beyond his position you can see clones from a unit that’s not part of the regiment. It’s hard to make out a precise number though.

You walk up and yell out into the darkness.

>We’ll scrap any clankers we see!

The response you get is worrying.

“We already told you! Identify yourselves or be treated as hostile!”

Goto leans over to you. “Already tried that, sir. Bad response. One of Commander Fisher’s companies is already flanking them, but I’m not sure what to do from here.” You notice that his men have their weapons out, though they’re not pointing them outwards, yet.

What will you do?

>Give orders for the artillery to be set up while you try and stall for time. When you can, you’ll attack in conjunction with Fisher’s men.
>Negotiate with these men. They’re clones after all, you’re sure you can come to some understanding.
>Identify as for the Republic, and emphasise that you’re not on any side.
>Chance it, and identify for Skywalker or Organa (which?)
>Write in.

[/blue]ON CORUSCANT[/blue]

Two of the Red Guard flanked the doorway, standing motionless even as the room shook again. That was the fifth time now. Or was it the sixth? Mas Amedda’s mind had begun to wander as he sat in the cold and rather spartan room. He was the Vice Chancellor, and at this moment he was utterly powerless. There wasn’t anything to do down here other than wait for the all-clear. No terminals to the outside, or communications. Just the Red Guard, some benches, and the Vice Chancellor of the Republic. Or Chancellor, now, if the Senate would ratify him. But who could tell how they would react after today?

Skywalker would be a problem. A brilliant general and a fearless warrior, but an awful political leader. His blundering might very well cost them everything. If they had managed to announce the assassination of Sidious to the senate, turn them all against the Jedi, then the Plan could have gone through, the Jedi all executed by soldiers loyal to the Republic instead of to them, but that damned Skywalker had blindly rushed ahead and ruined it by using codes only the Chancellor was supposed to use.

He still wasn’t sure how Skywalker had managed to do that. Those codes were supposed to be known only by the Chancellor himself. Perhaps it had been Sidious’s final act. A final stab at the jedi as he died. He would carry out the Plan, though he would not see it to fruition. But the Plan was in ruins. Everything had been invested in Sidious, and with his death went all their effort to unite the galaxy. The Separatists were free to act. The Republic was split in two. It was civil war, and there was no other way to address it. One in which the Jedi were still players.

The damn Separatists were also a problem. They answered to Sidious, and it would be difficult to get them together in one place for assassination now that he was dead. And the civil war might embolden them, bring out the opportunists looking to make more power, and money. He’d have to approach them through Sidious’s channels, try and see if they could work something out. Maybe woo them over somehow.
>>
>>5776058

But he was stuck here beneath the Executive building. Of course, the jedi could have mounted an assault. Butchered their way through the executive building to get through to him after they’d dealt with Skywalker. That would have ended any questions of parallel authority. But their greatest flaw was that they had always been weak, hesitant to do what needed to be done, and this was the source of their downfall. Or, at least, that was how it was supposed to be.

If only he had been able to be there when it had happened. But he hadn’t, so it fell to Skywalker to do what he saw fit. Sidious’s protégé didn’t have a clue how the Senate worked, and now the Jedi and their sympathisers were setting up their own power-base to threaten theirs, and Skywalker couldn’t see it. It was almost strange how ignorant he was, considering his closeness to Senator Amidala, but then again, it probably wasn’t why he was interested in her. Maybe he could use that. Security Services had been tracking them for 3 years now, and it had taken a lot of effort from Sidious to keep the relationship quiet from the Jedi. But now the Jedi had other concerns, and there was no more need to protect her. Yes, Skywalker could be used, certain things might be suggested.

But he had to be careful. Skywalker was liable to kill him outright if he suspected anything, that much was clear from what Sidious had told him. He was still a problem, but one that could be managed. Someone who could be manipulated, if he was subtle enough. A tool, to be pointed at problems. And there would be many.

The most immediate one would be handling Skywalker. Letting him take command of the army, maybe even promote him. Sidious had mentioned that the Jedi had snubbed him. Yes, he’d give him free reign for a while, let him wage a campaign against the Jedi wherever they were gathering. Move him away from Coruscant, play into his strengths and remove him from the political stage where he could not interfere with the Plan any further. Separate him from Amidala. And the Vice Chancellor would become the Chancellor. Skywalker’s rage and impatience, useful for a student to Sidious, were of no use to him. The fact that he was sitting in this reinforced bunker for the second time that week was proof enough.
And with that, the interlude is done! The End of the Republic will return in approximately a week's time, maybe earlier if I feel I've got it planned out well enough. I'll archive this thread now and post a new one for the next part. Thanks for reading!
