Hemya was digging a hole moments ago.
She feels like she just fell of a tree, hitting every branch on the way down.
Except that it was a mess of thick cables that slowed her fall, instead of the limbs of a tree.
It was quite the drop, she is lucky that she got away with just some bumps and bruises instead of a broken leg.

Sitting on the pile of dirt that that came along on her journey down she looked around.
A mostly metallic room, except for the ceiling, which appears to be covered in some kind of construction foam.
The Hemya-shaped hole in the foam ceiling lets in enough light for her to see some rickety scaffolding along with some broken machinery, vents and one dark doorway.

There is nothing here that could help Hemya get back out, the ceiling is just too high.
She will have to explore this strange, buried structure with just the two things that she carried on her person.

This has more utility than it would seem on the surface. It could heat up the knife, melt rubber, and the construction foam implies the presence of wooden beams. Torches and makeshift glue from the melted rubber can be made.

If we find things to stack like boxes or beams, we could cut one of the cables with the heated knife to make into an artificial vine to climb back up and down as needed.

To her relief, the old flashlight survived the fall just fine, she attaches it to the front of her belt.
Clutching her trusty pocket knife helps Hemya to calm her nerves, who knows if something is still alive down here?
She would much rather have her crossbow or hatched right now but that stuff is left on the surface, along with her supplies.
Hell, even her shovel would have been a better emergency weapon.

Speaking of which, where is her shovel, wasn't she using it just before she made her grand entrance?
Hemya can't find it anywhere in the room, not even her flashlight helps.
Eventually she looked up and saw the wooden handle poking over the edge of the hole above her, seemingly to taunt the girl.

As she gathered herself, she notices a faint yellow light illuminating the dark doorway ahead before slowly fading away.
Did a light-source just pass by? Is there anything alive down here or was it just some ancient automated system still running?

Leaving the comfort of her crash-chamber, Hemya realizes that this "underground complex" that she found might be bigger than first imagined.
The entrance of her room leads her right onto an intersection of a rather spacious hallway.
Pipes and cables run along the upper walls and the ceiling and the floor plates show signs of vehicles passing trough.
There are a few lights along the walls but they barely emit any light, Hemya couldn't tell if they are electric lights running on very low voltage or chem-lights that are almost spent.

Back to the task at hand, Hemya managed to follow the yellow light to the south of the intersection and around the corner.
The sound of dripping water and smacking lips was audible even before the girl peeks into the room where the light shines from.

Hemya is familiar with those creatures, mutant subhumans that use abandoned human structures as their homes.
Since they can subsist on nothing but insects and puddles of mud, they are spread far and wide even in the most desolate places.
They make the lives of scavengers like Hemya hard because they occupy the very same structures that scavengers are interested in.
Those Wretches are small, deformed and barely stronger than a human child.
Killing just one shouldn't be too hard, even if her only weapon is a pocketknife, but a group of them are a serious threat.

The corroded and bend metal underneath Hemyas boots refused to cooperate with her.
The fat little mongrel turned its head before Hemya could cover more than half the way to it.
It jumped on its feet just before the girl could jab the small blade into its neck.
The mutant tried to dig its filthy nails into Hemya's hands but it couldn't penetrate her leather gloves.

Screeches and squeals turned into gargles and sputtering as the knife did its bidding.
The creature collapsed as its blood ran down the drain.

Some of its ugly friends might have heard its yapping.

By the way OP, are the outcomes of these actions pre-determined or resolved through rolls?
>>
>>5768650
A coin flip decided how it went this time.
Lost the first coin flip, won the second one, so the kill was a bit messy and loud.
I think i need a better way to decide the outcomes in the future.
>>
>>5768662
If you wanna do a coinflip in the future you can just type 'dice+1d2' in the 'Options' section above--that'll roll a 2-sided dice. A lot of other quests use the best of 3 1d100 rolls, but it's largely up to how you wanna play it.
>>
>>5768627
>>5768647
And +1 to this vote, by the way.
>>
>>5768650
For the sake of making this a bit more transparent:
-if the "slam head into pipes" method would have been chosen, Hemya would have caused some noise by default but it would have taken a lot of lost coin flips for a truly loud fight.

-if the ambush would have been chosen, it would have been an easy kill but the mutant would have dropped the things that he was carrying, which would cause some moderate noise.
A lot of lost coinflips would have resulted in more mutants walking over while she waits for this one to leave, and many wins would have resulted in quiet kill.

-the sneak attack was the high risk, high reward option.

> Wouldn't that ruin the tension and excitement.
Well...
You could give a vague challenge rating for each option, then have players roll [1d100, avg of 3] or [1d100, rand of 3].
This would preserve player anticipation and give you leeway to fudge things a little if the need arises.
At the end of the day, you're providing an interesting adventure with some pretty good accompanying art.
Only the most pedantic of powergamers would complain about the lack of absolute mechanical transparency.
>>

Thats too big-brained for me, calculating all the rolls of the corresponding posts together sounds so painful.
It would also make thing more complicated for the posters.

Unlike the other vents she has seen so far, this one is placed higher up the wall and offers very little head space.
The short mutants would struggle to climb inside and all who are remotely as fat as the one Hemya just killed would get stuck.
A perfect emergency exit if it wasn't for those four pesky screws holding the cover in place.

The "lantern" that our fat friend was carrying turned out to be a bundle of chem-light sticks, glued onto a metal base.
Their light might have dimmed over the years but its still bright enough for Hemya to work on the vent.

The girl managed to remove two of the screws before she heard the wet smacking of bare feet on metal.
She quickly tore of the hood from the dead mutant and covered the lantern to dim its light a little.

The flickering light of a torch approached from the left, accompanied by the toxic smell of burning plastic.
There is at least one of them, huffing from the exertion of waddling at a brisk pace towards the noise he heard.

The torch-wielding mongrel waddled in without a care in the world.
It didn't even seem consider the possibility that the killer of his fellow mutant could still be around.
As t started poking the corpse with its foot while letting out a croaking laughter, Hemya wondered if that one might have come from a different tribe of mutants.

Slowly and quietly, a clubfooted female mutie entered the murder scene.
She is even smaller than her companion and carried some empty glass bottles attached to some cordage in one hand and a bone-shiv in the other.

Unlike the torch-carrier she did look over, made eye contact with the human and froze.

Not wanting to get stabbed, Hemya simply shoved the crippled mutant aside and rushed at the torch-wielder.

Despite of the commotion happening right behind him, the potbellied mutt was still focused on stepping on the corpse in front of him.
Perhaps the distressed noises of his female companion and clattering glass bottles is something he is used to?

The pocketknife dug deep into his armpit and Hemya pulled it out with as slashing motion while pushing the mutant over.
Since he only had one foot on the floor, he fell over right away, but was still able to hold onto his torch.

A few thick drops of the black goo covering the torch flew off and kept burning on the floor as the mutie hit the ground, nasty stuff.
Despite the rapid blood-loss the mutant begins to rise while giving Hemya the stink-eye.

Meanwhile the cripple still struggled to get on her feet, the clubfoot to be more specific, while clutching her shiv.

To her credit, the mutant woman did not try to run away after seeing her partner getting stabbed.
She barely managed to get on her feet before Hemya grabbed the hand that was holding the shiv.
The difference in size and strength was to great for the mutant as the human effortlessly managed to stab her multiple times.

The torch mutant still tried to go after Hemya, either ignoring or being oblivious to the slashed artery in his armpit.
The dimwitted creature collapsed from blood loss before reaching the girl, probably confused as to why his body stopped working.

Now there are 3 dead muties in the room, not a sound aside from the dripping of the leaky pipe.
Nothing else seems to be approaching this place for now, Hemya has some time to think.

>>
>>5773154
Since we don't appear to require an emergency escape at the moment, perhaps we should hide the mutant corpses in the vent.
Removing indicators of our presence minimizes the risk of unpredictable behavior from the natives.

We may also want to search the disgusting little gremlins for objects of interest.
They almost certainly have nothing worthwhile, but it would be silly not to check.

Hemya quickly unscrewed the grate from the vent to secure another escape path in case she gets swarmed by mutants.
Even without the screws the grate can be re-attached without any issue, the stupid mongrels wont notice a thing.

After that was done, the scavenger-girl had to deal with the dead mutant situation.
The fat mutant with the lantern came from north of the junction near of Hemyas entrance room.
The other two came from the east , lets call them the torch mutants.
One came with a bucket, the others brought glass bottles.
This room with the leaky pipe must be the watering hole for (at least) those two tribes.

Considering how the torch wielder reacted to the fatty's corpse, those two groups might not like each other.
Both tribes will probably sent out some more mutts to find out why their water-carriers have not returned yet.

Hemya is coming up with a devilish idea, but first she has to deal with all of the possible loot.
The rope holding the female mutant's "dress" in place seemed pretty sturdy.
The fat guy carried a sack made of some kind of tough synthetic fibers, there were some roasted insect remains inside of it but the girl dumped those, she is not that desperate yet.
Torch wielder had nothing but a loin cloth and a necklace made of chewed-up electronic scrap, useless.
Aside from that there is the steel bucket that the fat guy brought, the water in the bucket looks clean and only has a slight iron smell to it.
His chem lantern can't be turned off but it offers some nice permanent light source.
The 3 glass bottles look pretty sturdy, plus they still have their caps attached.

Hemya used the moment of peace to scrape the cloth scraps covered in black, burning sludge from the torch-stick.
Using the rope from the mutant girls' dress, she fastened the bone shiv onto the stick to create a (quite fragile) war-pick.
The pile black sludge is still burning and stinking up the place, but its Hemyas only source of fire so she refrains from extinguishing it for now.

There are still no signs of mutants approaching, our heroine still got some time to plan her next actions

arrange the corpses and climb into the vent, don't see why we can't put the loot in there too. wait inside the vent for the mutants that come looking for their fellow tribe members, maybe both tribes will show up and they will fight it out, getting rid of some more of them without lifting a finger. even if that doesn't happen, at least we can possibly get more information on the inhabitants, like how many come looking, and what stuff they are carrying. if either tribe is convinced that one of theirs got killed by the other, then it might start a hot war between them, as long as they aren't focusing on us, we'll benefit from it.

Since it would look suspicious if all three mutants would have been killed by efficient, lethal stab wounds, Hemya slashed them up a little more and moved the bodies closer together.
"The brave, unarmed, fatso was attacked by a group of rival mongrels but still managed to kill two of them before dying a warriors death!"
At least that is what the girl imagined, watching the scene she created.

After a little crawling, the vent became more spacious.
There seems to be a deep shaft going down, in the center of this vent system.
The thin metal grate covering this hole didn't look like it could handle a human putting their weight on it so Hemya turned back.

The grate on the western vent was larger than the one she entered trough.
After messing around with it for a while, Hemya found a mechanism to unlock the grate from the inside, it must have been some kind of maintenance entrance.

The L shaped room had two sealed doors and too much crap for the girl to worry about right now.
On first glance this must have been some sort of maintenance/janitorial room, shelves with various cleaning equipment and miscellaneous scrap lined the walls.
It would take some time to check if this room is actually save, but Hemyas time is limited.

There is no obvious way to open either of the two doors, no way the mutants could figure that stuff out.
The garbage chute next to the vent seems to be bottomless and it has a latch to lock it tight, neat.
The cleaning vehicle underneath the tarp has one of its four wheels firmly placed on top of a trapdoor.
Hemya could jam some plastic broomsticks into the opening mechanism of the vent to lock it.

Overall this room is far more save than her starting location.

>>5775069
Hemya couldn't decipher the symbols on any of the labels that cover the various bottles and jars on the shelves.
After opening some bottles and taking a whiff, she became a bit dizzy.
None of this stuff smelled like it could be used to purify drinking water.

Four identical bottles had a strong medical-alcohol smell, perhaps this stuff is flammable.
Perhaps Hemya could purify some water using some sort of alcohol stove.

She poured some of the liquid into a small tin can and stuffed a rag inside to serve as a small torch.
Now she just needs to ignite this miniature torch and she would have a reliable source of fire.
The burning sludge in the water room would do the trick, there are still no sounds of approaching mongrels.

After the pile of burning sludge ignited Hemyas can-torch, she quickly extinguished it to put an end to that burning plastic smell.
Stuffing everything in the vent saved her some time.
She even managed to fill the three glass bottles at the leaky pipe before she heard angry squealing in the distance.

Sliding into the vent and reattaching the grate, the girl began to quietly shove all of the stolen goods into her new home.

>>5775886
With all of the loot secured, Hemya had time to inspect that sweeper thing a little closer.
Even with her limited mechanical knowledge, she could still tell that this 'vehicle' was not powered by a combustion engine.
Calling is a vehicle might be a stretch, it has no seat or steering wheel, it must be either remote controlled of autonomous.

The sweeper won't budge even a little as she pushes is, the wheels seem to be locked and the traction on the metal is too good.
At least she can use the tarp as a blanked later.

For now, there is plenty of time to kill as she waits for things to heat up between the mutts.

We’ll make a makeshift bed, then look for any kind of food. Maybe we can boil some moss or something, not to eat now since we’re not too hungry, but just in case we can’t leave for a while. After that we can do a quick rummage through the boxes and go to bed. Tomorrow, we’ll leave in search of food and a way out.

Searching trough the shelves, Hemya found some pliers, glue, screwdrivers and two canisters with an oil-like substance.
It looks like lubricant for machines but its also flammable.
The scrap box is filled with plastic cordage, small metal scrap pieces and cloth fragments of various sizes.

Hemya is happy, now that she can finally cleanse herself of all of the grime and odor sticking to her.
She could hear a loud argument between mutants trough the vent as she washed herself.
But that quarrel ended rather quickly, Hemya hopes that this wasn't all of it.

The girl utilizes one of the longer pieces of cord to dry her cleaned clothes.
At least as cleaned as they get after being dunked into the brown muck that was left in the bucket after Hemya was done scrubbing 4 days worth of sweat and dirt off of her skin.
Not to mention all the filth she encountered down here.

Trowing a bunch of cleaning rags on top of the pile of mats and covering it with a tarp makes for a decent bed.
She is not tired yet tho, still got some time to kill while waiting for the Mongrel battle to start.

Based on how the room is laid out, the door to the left must lead out into the hallway.
However, the door to the right must lead into a new room. There aren't many options for what that room could be given this place seems to be some kind of janitorial station - but maybe we can salvage some more useful items in there.
Its uncertain whether it is secure so prying open out saferoom to access it may not be wise - but perhaps after the mutants have gotten tired of shivving each other we can circle back through the hallways and verify that.

Picking only the nastiest pieces of scrap metal from the box of junk, Our resourceful scavenger quickly constructed some painful-looking caltrops.
She put them into the fat mutants snack-sack, she could pour them out to slow down any pursuers when she has to flee, or use the sack as a 'rock-in-a-sock'-type flail.

A while after getting comfortable on her improvised bed, she could hear a plethora of mutants approaching the watering hole.
At first it was just arguing that Hemya could hear trough the vent, but it did not take long for things to escalate.

Their 'fearsome' battle cries rang throughout the complex as the two factions clashed.

This kept going for what felt to her like hours.
There is no way that this is a battle to the death, Mongrels lack the stamina and aren't that self destructive.
She imagined that most of the fighting consists of insults and shit-flinging, with the occasional stabbing and bludgeoning.

Be as it may, both groups will retreat sooner or later to lick their wounds and cannibalize their dead, as is tradition among these subhumans.
Hemya will have to use that time to explore the complex further, finding an exit or some food are her priorities.

Shoving one of the thick, rigid rubber mats trough the vent was hard work.
Luckily the muties were to busy fighting to pay any attention to Hemya messing around in the vents.

She thought it would be enough to stabilize the fragile, corroded grate covering the pit in the central of the vent system.
The mat reached across the pit and would help displacing Hemyas weight over a larger area.
But the groaning of the old metal turned into cracking as the grate finally gave in, letting Hemyas lower body and the mat quickly sink into the hole.

Hemya kicked as hard as possible against what little remained of the grate to launch herself forward just a little bit further.
The rubber mat was sticking half way out of the vent hole, there are only jagged remains of the grates frame left there.
Somehow, in that short panicked moment, the girl managed to scrape her right leg pretty badly.

The wound is large but mostly superficial, she should still disinfect and bandage it later.
At least the mutants didn't notice the noise she was making, still busy fighting one another.
The vents to the east both seem to covered with those screwed on grates, similar to the water room.
With no way to remove the grate from the inside of the vent, Hemya checked the one on the opposite side.
It was the same type that lead to her room, she opened it and entered cautiously.

There was only one door, the one that leads to her room.
A bunch of metal drawers and shelves lined the wall opposite of the vent.
Some scary looking machinery hung from the ceiling, in the center of the room.
The most interesting part are those four chambers, lined up next to the girl.

Three were empty and dead, but the last one emitted some light and a soft humming noise.
The terminal next to them was also active, so this place still has some power left.
Hemya imagined that there must be some sort of system responsible for the distribution of the limited power down here.

Shining her flashlight trough the ports of the first three chambers, Hemya could see nothing but a cramped spaces with cables and hoses dangling from the upper parts.
The last one in line was something else, the cables and hoses in there were attached to a human-looking figure wearing what looked like a hazmat gear.
At least that is what first came to the girls mind.
On closer inspection, the re-breather part of the mask looked far too tight, almost as if that thing is missing its lower jaw and upper teeth.
Even in the greenish light, its skin looks sickly pale and wrinkly, no eyebrows or eyelids whatsoever.
The suit looks like thick bulky rubber and had no visible seams.
That is all she can make out trough the viewing port, at least.

To her surprise, Hemya could actually read what was displayed on the screen.
Well, most of the letters, she still used some interpretation for a few of the letters and words.

>Vessel J1-N1 UNRESPONSIVE
>Vessel J2-N1 UNRESPONSIVE
>Vessel J3-N1 E892
>Vessel J4-N1 READY

This terminal must be responsible for those Vessel-things inside of the chambers.
Hemya tried to access different functions of the terminal for a while.
It would either lead her to different kinds of error messages or a screen full of those strange machine-language symbols, like those on the bottle labels.

The only real option she has on the terminal is:
>activate Vessel J4-N1
She has no idea if it would work, and if that 'Vessel' wouldn't become hostile.

There is a lot of stuff here, aside from even more janitorial supplies and empty plastic cylinders, many of the drawers are filled with an assortment of materials to maintain electrical equipment.
Not that Hemya knows how to use any of that, but the scavenger in her already speculates what that stuff could be worth.
Her most important find was a suspiciously small pry bar with a pentagonal hole.

It was impossible to force the door open with such a small tool, it wouldn't even fit in the gap.
It was perfectly capable at opening the panel next to it tho.
Underneath the panel were some wires, switches and most importantly, a pentagonal socket.

Hemya used the pry bar as a lever on the socket and the door began to slowly open up as she kept spinning it.
She opened it up wide enough for her to slip trough.

Turns out this alcohol-based liquid made for disinfecting surfaces is a bit more potent than the actual medical stuff she used in the past.
After washing out her wound, she poured just a little of it on her leg but it was enough to almost have her scream out in pain.
Hemya poured half a bottle of her water on it to stop the searing sensation.
Her leg is still throbbing with pain but at least its cleaned and bandaged now.

The mutant fight is dying down, they must be getting tired.
Maybe some left due to injuries or they got knocked out, or (if Hemya is lucky) even got killed.

As for the preparations before she starts up that machine-man in the neighboring room.
She left the pry bar attached to the panel on her side of the door to look that thing in there in case its aggressive.
Her flimsy war-pick probably won't do much to it, but its should buy her some time if things turn sour.

As an additional measure of safety, Hemya poured some of the lubricant she found in a empty can and placed it in front of the semi-open door.
She can kick it over when she retreats, at least that is the idea.

With nothing else to do, the girl starts the activation process and quickly retreats to the door.
The soft humming of the chamber turned into hissing and rumbling, she could hear the popping sounds of the hoses and cables disconnecting from the body.
Suddenly the greenish light of the chamber shuts off and all is quiet.
Hemya almost thought that it failed but then the chamber slowly opens and the tall, hunched figure stumbles out on unsteady legs.

It looked kind of confused as it turns its head, probably wondering why all the machines are silent and the lights are off.
After an awkward greeting from Hemya, it stared at the weird girl wearing a blanket as a dress but did not approach her.
Instead, it decided that the terminal, that now is the only thing in the room that still has power, could explain what is going on.
It appears that our awakened friend is able to read that machine language on the screen, as its switching between all the different pages that Hemya couldn't understand.

This is awkward, Hemya just stands there for some time, not knowing what to do.
It clearly isn't hostile, but what should she do now?

After running out of patience, the girl final approached the Janitor with a question.
It appeared like he understood her, as he looks at her before returning to the terminal.
He switched the screen to one of the [no connection] pages before looking at Hemya again.

Hemya sat down on one of the drawers next to the terminal and began asking the janitor some questions.
"This place is overrun with ugly little mutants, can you fight them if we had to?"
"Are you a man or some kind of machine?"
"Do you have any kind of medical knowledge?"
He kept shaking his head at all of this questions while looking at the terminal.

As Hemya asked her final question, the janitor finally showed a real reaction as he turns around and looks at her with slightly widened eyes.
The girl told him everything about their current situation.
Despite the fact that she just admitted breaking into this place, the janitors disposition didn't seem to change in any way.

While mulling over all the events that happened in the past hours, Hemya became a bit drowsy.
It was late afternoon when the ground gave way and Hemya plummeted into this mess.
She does not know how much time passed since then, but it must be dark outside by now.

She secured a save place to sleep and her stomach isn't growling yet.
Hemya contemplates leaving her friend to his own devices for now to catch some sleep.

The link on the bottom of the left bar is used to add a thread, it takes you to a page where you put in the post number of the original/opening post, a title, description, and tags people can use to search for it. Usually for a quest like this you'd see tags like the name, Buried Derelict, along with the genre, Survival?, and other miscellaneous ones like Drawquest, Resource Scarce, etc. If it's still too troublesome I can do it for you, just let me know what you want for a title, description, and tags.
