/qst/ - Quests

Without warning, the cradlelike rocking of the train ever so gently shifts the tilted cap off your wide open eyes. Your pulse quickens. Parts of the world sway into focus. The soothing sound of railtracks. The soft tick-tock metronome of the Timekeeper conductor unit. The smells of old upholstery, bitter diesel, blood, coffee, and the tender stench of cigarette smoke which seems to permeate everything.

You pull the officer's silk coat tighter around your body, trying to recover your rest, but the sensations of the waking world have already cut through. You sigh and adjust your cap. Remnants of sleep fall away like dust. Your work is not yet done.

You are the Agent known as...
>Mr. Lead (Start with the Big Iron + normal pheromone capacity; COMBAT focus)
>Ms. Director (Start with a stiletto + expanded pheromones; SOCIAL focus)

And you've been assigned a Mission to complete with all your strength, all your effort...
>There's a traitor in the car next door. She's been caught selling trade secrets. Silence her, one way or another.
>There's a private buyer on the Surface looking for wholesale cuts of MEAT. He wants to buy literal tons of it. You're going up there to close the deal.
>There's something making workers go missing in the Hives. Something that leaves behind shells drained of blood and workers struggling to stay awake.
>The night ahead is young and bright. The job's done. Everything's all right. Just need to pick up some milk on the way home...
>It's that weird dream again, the dreams of the dark ocean. A suffocating sense of déjà vu. The Company can't know about this little trip out here, not after your last psych report...

I interpreted the 'social focus' as being soft mind control with pheromones, hence the Ms.Director label. Not necessarily only a diplomat. Doesn't matter now though.

The Big Iron weighs heavy in its holster, ready and steadfast as a faithful hound at your side. Unequal in power, unbelievable in accuracy, and tremendous in recoil. Bullets which can puncture anything you please. And when you have no bullets left, the gun itself is heavy enough to smash out teeth, shatter bones, knock heads, and cause a lasting limp in your right leg. The biggest, baddest gun in the world. Amen to that.

Real darn shame it can hold only four bullets at a time, though.

Mission Objective: The Company wants you to officiate the sale of Grade A MEAT to a private buyer on the surface.

You take out the folder with all of the necessary documents inside. They might as well be written in Mandarin, but if the Company wants you to sign here, here, and here, well, the pen's already in your hand.

Here is a photo of a gray little man in a red vest sitting behind a desk. The buyer, Mister John Smith. Typical dusty bureaucrat who's never smiled in his life. As you stare at the photo, you feel a unsettling sense of seeing something vast and grotesque. It's utterly irrational but...

(Suits RPG Ost - Pain Station) https://youtu.be/ip2eciao1es?si=vWRYdRwaVGmHivuw

You shudder before you realize the train's already stopped. As you disembark, you draw yourself deeper into your coat. Take a deep breath. Steam, smoke, oil. The dark silk of the coat seems to draw into itself the din of the thronging crowds and the dazzling station lights which threaten to draw your attention this way and that. You're grateful for this - genuine officer's silk, standard material for police uniforms.

Today, the Railroad Bulls are out in full force. T Company's private security guards, up and down the railway. They seem to be looking for someone in the crowd, someone else, certainly not you. Hopefully not you. But with their meaty hands and their time-shattered visages, you can't help but feel threatened by their unnerving presence.

It's only when you get in sight of the tollbooth do you realize your ticket does not go all the way up. You have to get to the Surface, one way or another. How do you want to proceed?
>Pay the toll. Even though it costs an arm and a leg, you have the money for a pass to the Surface.
>Mug someone. You have the physique and focus to take what you want when you want. And you want a pass now.
>Just sneak onto the lift? You'll have to concentrate your pheromones here for a proper obfuscation.

We can mug our way back down if we don't have the money. If we get caught on our way up then that means having to fight both going up and down rather than just down because we'll be making this space hostile 'early'.

In the ancient glassy eyes of a railway man, the greatest crime a passenger can commit is being a filthy fucking freeloader. It isn't uncommon for the Bulls to walk people to a lonely corner of the rail yard and teach them a hard lesson on having the proper identification.

Savage beatings, or worse. The police pick up the pieces afterwards. No blood, just pieces. The sand they use for the emergency breaks soaks all of that right up.

No ticket, no ride. So if you're going to pay, it better be on someone else's dime.

An electric current seems to run across your fluff. Your arms get all tingly. You resist the primal urge to wave them threateningly. You swivel your head, looking for an easy mark among the masses...
>Roll d6.

A clipboard in one hand and a Surface pass clutched in the other, held like his very own ticket through the Pearly Gates. The clerk is trying and failing to keep a low profile as he scurries on by. It's impossible him to not stick out. His reddened complexion and dark hair mark him as a Surface-born, striking an almost violent contrast against the red-eyed, albino swarms of ordinary City folk. You can literally taste the alarm pheromones radiating from him as you close in. You're getting all riled up inside.

A clawed hand comes down heavy on his shoulder. His eyes bug out as he turns. You flick at your collar, turning on the voice changer embedded within.

"Come along," your second voice growls.

The suit tries to make a break for it, but he has the fear of a mouse and all the strength of one too. You wrangle him far from any wandering eyes then shove him against the door of a maintenance tunnel. The kid finally has the nerve to open his mouth, but you grab handfuls of his shirt and yank him to his feet before he gets a word out.

"Listen up, pinkskin." You flex your forewings and your shadow looms over him entirely. He closes his eyes like it's all a bad dream. "Hand over your pass and you get to live another day. You try and scuttle to those guards over there afterwards? I'm plunking a hole right into your stinking guts. You'll take a damn long time dying with the filth mixed into your blood... So what's it gonna be then, eh?"

"HHhhhHhh-H-Here. J-Jesus, don't kill me-" His grip weakens and you snatch the pass right out of it. Real official, has the wax stamp of T Company's time and tracks and all that. You give him a little love tap right across the jaw as an afterthought. Something cracks. He'll live. Moving right along.

You have the open platform lift all to yourself. Everyone must be out to lunch. After only a few moments, the creak of unseen and ancient mechanisms begins to draw you up into the sky. The air is becoming thinner and colder. You draw your coat tight again and start beating your wings to keep warm.

(Fear & Hunger 2: Termina OST - Memories) https://youtu.be/spDP_AXUtaE?si=GxoCLVloq9u5UTio

It's quiet up here, atop the world. You're not used to such a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. The good feeling from earlier is gone. Your mind wanders aimlessly over your cares and worries. You allow it.

Through your compounded eyes, the City below turns into a faint dance of lights and shapes among countless shadows. It's all so distant, so bright, and even now...

You hear the City's voice. A composite vocal message of massed humanity. You listen. Just a whisper now. The millions of hushed and unseen footfalls reverberating into the savage darkness. The comforting ambience of gunfire across the velvet horizon. The breaking of waves across the blackstone shores. She's calling you, calling out to you, a soundless voiceless roar carried throughout the endless tunnels underfoot, across the dark waters, in dark days and bright nights, in rain and in dust...

You can't escape me, Agent. You can't escape yourself. And so you'll come back, as you always will. Come back home, back to my dark streets, my outstretched arms...

It might be why the Company selected you for recruitment. It might be why you're chosen for the Missions. It might just be what makes you special. What you know is that this is what makes it personal.

[CRUELTY] - So what's it going to be then, eh? (You are a man of blunted sensibilities and ready violence; a man of restless, aggressively stimulus-seeking disposition; an enthusiastic advocate of pain and wanton destruction. In short, a psychopath. You thrive in situations with high TERROR and gain bonuses when exercising your power over others.)

You've known yourself ever since you emerged from your chrysalis and first spread your damp wings, glistening under the tunnel lights. You worked the neighborhoods as an enforcer, acting on unpaid debts, protection fees, simple viciousness. Organized crime has its place in nearly every city. This City is no exception.

The primitive prey part of your bug brain kept your head down when the bigger players like the Sanitechs and Alphabet Companies swept through the tunnels like heavy weather. You knew the score. So when the Company came to you, it was an opportunity to keep doing what you were good at and enjoy freedom and impunity in doing it. You're stridulating to yourself, lost in fond memories, when the lift rises into a suddenly warm and suffocating air.

What is an Agent? you ask yourself as the desert sand swirls at your feet. A bad man doing bad things to bad people.

It's time to get back to work.

You arrive onto another train platform - just as the ones below, so above. There is no true sunlight on the Surface from the Tethered Sun, hidden behind the choking clouds of smog and sand. The industrial heart of the City juts into the sky, still beating and impaled on jagged and chaotic outgrowths of the underlying Support Structure. Heavy industry grinds eternal in the distance, underfoot, everywhere, nowhere. Shells of ruined buildings stand side by side with ordinary office towers, and everything is swallowed up in the sea of pipes and dunes.

You cough as you take it all in. You recall that breathing the Surface air for any longer than you need to would spell a long and excruciating death. You slide your ill-gotten pass into the nearby scanner and receive a small oxygen tank and breath mask, compliments of A, F, and R Companies, Bolverk Mining, Toha Heavy Industries, and so on and so on. The visitors guide station drones out half a dozen more names before screeching into static and collapsing.

Goddamn it.

You look around. You feel an incredible consternation. It's all the same pipework and rusted walkways everywhere. You're at the risk of being lost to the industrial labyrinth or to the endless desert, pick your fucking poison.

All you have is an address and a photo. You consider your options. You hate to admit it, but this isn't a problem you can solve by shooting at it. (By your understanding, at least.)

How do you want to do this? [The chosen approach will determine your second best skill, so don't skimp on details for resolving this scene. Even a small sentence start will do.]

You click your tarsal claws together in the hopes of triggering some hidden mnemonic. It doesn't. But you feel calm and in control even as your oxygen's pressure gauge slowly shifts to the red, tic by tic, moment by moment.

By a flickering service light, you take a quiet moment to plan your aggression and the advance. What did Control say about the case, what did she say, what do you know..?

1. Take the first stairs you see, labeled A1-B. Second door to the right and straight on till morning.
2. Careful where and when you step. Time isn't what it used to be. It is all steel now, hours in every direction.
3. People know how to navigate here, otherwise this place would be empty. Follow the people. Follow their shadows which run along the far walls of the halls.
4. There is nothing for you out there in the brazing sterile desert.
5. Listen to the City's heart and let it guide your steps. Surrender.

A picture begins to form in the mind's eye. You are developing a "feel" for the terrain of the outrageous Surface. The map is useful in its structure. It's time to put the pieces together, then walk the path.

The world shifts...

The heat is killing you in this mad landscape of metal and machine. Everything seems like a fever dream on the Surface. Here is a conglomeration of buildings and places without purpose, consistency, even conformation to earthly geometries. You try one path and you find it impossible to retrace your steps. Stairs without destinations and walls behind doors. Always trailing behind some skittering office drone, only for him to vanish into thin air around the corner.

The world shifts...

There's another ruined building here. It's not supposed to be up here. Its surfaces are worn smooth as if by the passage of water over time. The taste of brine and pungent salt water carries on the wind. The sounds of industry are muffled as if coming somewhere far underneath the dark waters.

You can feel the ocean soaking your boots and you recoil only to find yourself stepping back into the sunlight and arid air as the sand crunches underneath your weight. You shiver and retreat into the sweltering depths of your coat. The heat's been stolen out of you.

The world shifts...

How can it be that A Company can create an orderly City but permit its District to exist in this madness? How can the flowers of F Company bloom in the desert? What even is this place? WHERE ARE YOU?

The world shifts...

You are running out of air. You can't sweat as a mothman and you're not going to take off your coat. You don't have the energy to flap your wings to cool off anymore. You are dying at the hands of the desert and no one will avenge you. Your nerves, your nerves.

"Show me a wonder," you whisper at the heart of the world. Succor and hope lie in her byways and mysteries. You demand it to be, so it shall. Please. Please help me.

And just for a moment, there is the Sun. The pains of your body and earthly worries drift away. You fixate on the faraway light. The Sun hangs over the mountains, warm, hot, and very fine.

The heart of R Company... the Tethered Sun, the Slag Sun chained to the distant horizon. The Star of the City rages and boils even centuries after it was struck down and chained to the top of the sky. Molten metal gushes forth like blood from the Christ. The foundries rush to drink their fill.

The light fades. The haze you were in is gone. It's as if the Sun had burned away the madness and insanity. You stand, staring into the clouds with your newfound clarity.

And just like that, it clicks. You turn around the corner and just as the briefing says, there's the wall of doors amid the mess of bridges, walkways, paths...

But there's one door with a barely noticeable red tint to it and a series of numbers that doesn't fit with the others. Something that sticks out within the ordered rows.

You enter.

"Come in, Agent. Have a seat." Sitting at the desk, peering down at you, is a gray little man in a red vest. The man in the photo. "We'd like to commend you on your hard work."

You've made it.

You take a few steps in and collapse from heatstroke.
>>
What follows is one of the most painful and awful experiences in your entire life.

If you could cry and if you had the water to spare, an endless river of tears would be jerked from your eyes - it was just that fucking boring. You will not repeat the details of paperwork because you were literally half dead in the seat as the little man was explaining every single clause in the folder you were given. He was very thorough and it sounded just about right.

Thank God that he has the full amenities for living in such a horrible place. An AC cranked to full blast, a minifridge with those little Company water bottles, the big blue oxygen tank. You've barely recovered from the ordeal before he offers you a pen and slides over the documents.

"Now, just one more formality. Sign your name here, Agent." [Choose one.]

You sign your name as best as you can without your glasses. Damn your eyes, it ain't easy being a mothman.

"Very good." The old man takes the file and reviews the document one more time. He stands, old bones a-creaking and hands behind his back, and hobbles towards the small barred window behind his desk. "Very good, indeed. All the MEAT will be delivered on the appointed time. The Company treats its clients well. Even us middlemen, you know."

You hum your agreement. The checks always clear and that's the bottom line.

"You've come at a good time, Agent. Just in time to see the last remnants of light. I'd liked to have basked under that great imperial Sun for only a little while. The sky turning awful pretty, the color of blood and red wine. Will be a long time till we see him again. If my grandkids were here..." Thin beams of the strange light of the Surface fall on his face through the small barred window. "Ah..."

"Can you tell me how to get back down?" You're getting real sick of the sight of white sand, and now the musty smell of an increasingly lonely old man. He turns around and points.

"Oh, it's quite simple really. Just take a left, go down the second stairwell, and you'll be at the lift with those tanks again." A small smile appears on the old man's face, the kind of smile people get when they know more than you do and want you to know it. All his teeth are shining white. You would be angry, but you feel disgusted instead.

You storm out without another word, snatching another water bottle on the way. The old man's voice follows you onto the platform overlooking the former Mojave Desert. "The Syndicate wishes you a swell day, Mister Lead!"

INTERMISSION

The exhaustion fades as you step into your home after another successful Mission (and another painfully long debrief across the phone). Although you can't quite explain what happened to you on the Surface, the job is done and your account filled to the brim. Everything is as it should be. Finished, finally.

"MROOOOOOW?" Your only friend in the entire world comes crawling around the corner to greet you.

"Heya Nigger," you chirp. You put down your groceries and carefully pick up your magcat. He purrs and whirs, comfortable in your arms. It's like holding onto a tiny waterbed. "How I love you, magcat."

"MROW." Good, good cat.

- Don't lose your mind.
- Second of the two health pools.

CONTROL: In Good Standing
- An Agent in good standing deserves respect :)
- Determines interactions with Mission Control and the Company as a whole.

Skills and Talents:
FORCE: 4d6
- You are good at acting very badly indeed. (+1d6.) [Probably going to add something nicer and more mechanically interesting, but extra dice is good start.]
- Formerly COMBAT. Used in contests of strength, endurance, celerity, all aspects of physical activity.
- Failure in FORCE rolls (ex. smashing down metal grates or chasing after a target across the rooftops) may cause a loss of CORPUS.

INSTINCT: 2d6
- The veins may be cold, but the nerves are not. (-1d6.)
- Used in the exercise of perception, persuasion, intuition, all sorts of mental and emotional bullshit you don't really get.
- Failure in INSTINCT related rolls (ex. calming down a small child or investigating who stole sandwiches from the fridge) may result in a loss of COMPOSURE.

ACCESS: 3d6
- You're a man of the street, you're still a face in the crowd.
- Used to pull favors in from the Company, speak the corporate tongue, tune in to the City, listen to the distant sound of crashing waves...
- Failure in ACCESS related rolls (ex. networking with the black ties or navigating your way through the pipe nightmare) can result in unforeseen consequences. Or nothing at all. Bureaucracy, baby.
>Navigation (You have a feel for the City's terrain. +2 to tallies.)

>2 Talents have yet to be determined.

Traits and Equipment:
[CRUELTY]
Breaker Bullet (FORCE)
Breaker Bullet (FORCE)
Breaker Bullet (FORCE)
Breaker Bullet (FORCE)
- Traits and Equipment can be used during an conflict to add 2d6 in their respective categories.
- You may use each Trait or Equipment only once, but can use as many as you want during a conflict. For example, you can spend all four of your Bullets to roll a whopping 8d6 for shooting a particularly mean-looking sewer rat.
- Special traits in brackets are not permanently lost when invoked and their 2d6 can be added to ANY type of conflict. Wild card option.

IMPORTANT: 6s are criticals and color the entire result. For example, if a 6,6 is rolled for [CRUELTY], you probably will succeed, but more people will be hurt as you indulge your sick pleasure.

Bonds:
- Nigger, your magcat (Excellent)

The spidermen won't venture this far into the maintenance tunnels on their regular patrols. This is a Gray Zone of influence — even the police can go missing here. Contested ground. Your grounds. Your City.

(Desiderii Marginis - Mantrap) https://youtu.be/NfMpMZuLEU8?si=7Yj7_Hkdl9ClbZpA

It's easy when they're lost, when they're in the dark, when they're alone, when it's a young woman. You've been following her for several lengths of tunnel without her noticing. It's easy.

The giant spider silk of your coat works both ways, dampening both your footsteps and all the sensory input from a normal day in the City. You know every turn and junction around these parts, even if the City shifts, and the darkness holds no secrets to your moth eyes.

But you can see her pretty well already, standing underneath the payphone lamp. She has sleek, tar-black hair, cut short, nice, and neat. Her skirt uniform complements those supple legs of hers real well. She certainly has some wit since her hand keeps hovering over the telltale bump of a gun. And if she wasn't so tense, you can imagine a cute grin spread on that pretty face of hers. She does lose major points for not being a moth, though. And for being Asian.

Enough waiting.

You knock hard on the nearest pipe, then step into the edge of the light. The woman drops the receiver in shock. Your body constantly pushes out pheromones to disguise yourself as a regular human being — to her, it must seem like some huge and smiling Chinese thug had just materialized out of thin air.

You stare each other down. You imagine the smile growing wider. The only sounds in the tunnel are the rush of pipework and the garbled words coming from the other end of the line.

A tender moment of tension. You savor these.

She takes out her gun. You take out yours.

*BLAM*

If this were an old cowboy movie, you'd have shot the gun right out of her hands. You went one better and blew her hand apart in a shower of gore with the Big Iron. Her screams echo beautifully up and down the gray tunnels as she clutches the torn mess of meat, tendon, and bone.

The woman starts running, somewhere, anywhere from here, and the submachine gun is sent clattering to the floor. Bad decision, lady. You give her a headstart, then chase the trail of fear and the blood leaking through the stale air...
>>
"MrrrrOOOWW?" Nigger greets you inquisitively. He almost doesn't recognize you with all the blood on your coat. You let out a few familiar clicks and he quiets down again.

You'd like to hit the shower immediately after a night on the town, but you're feeling sore and awful after that little trick with the wind tunnel. Your wings hurt.

The doctors within the Company network diagnosed you with a case of mild nerve damage. On a good day, you can move your wings like stiff joints. On a bad day, you're struggling to get even a single good flutter out of them. What a cumbersome mantle! What awful rigidity!

As a mothman, your wings don't have muscles in them. Instead, you need very strong shoulders and chest muscles in order to flap those wings. (The doctors also said that it's impossible for your wings to actually support your weight in flight, but that's bullshit because you've flown before.)

The solution becomes very simple. You enter the gym room, turn on the shadeless lamp in the middle of the room, and put on some good workout music.

(Hulk Hogan's Theme Song - Real American) https://youtu.be/fKJDAVvs_JA?si=U0GjYKK_utFjyJfh

You start with the stretches before anything else. But you make the mistake of staring too hard into the lamplight and you fixate your vision without realizing it. Instead of what the doctors ordered, you start lifting instead.

Landmine presses. Loading up three plates and just do ten plus reps. 307 bench. 328 squat. 426 deadlift. 172 shoulder press. All for reps of 5 per set. 45 minutes of lifts and cooldown.

Your body burns, you might have thrown out your back, you might have fudged the numbers on the weight, but YOU FEEL LIKE YOU CAN TAKE ON THE ENTIRE GODDAMN WORLD!

And at the end...

You hop up into the air and just for a few sweet, brief moments, you rapidly flap your wings and hover without falling...

Then you fall back to earth, where you belong, once more.
>>
Suddenly, while you were eating raw eggs with Tabasco sauce with your magcat again, your landline starts ringing. That phone's been disconnected for a long time. You feel the thrill rising up inside.

When the Company calls, you pick up. What are your talents needed for this time..?

"Mister Lead?" A soft, breathless voice you've never heard before comes over the line. Today's Handler must be whispering directly into the receiver. "Please listen carefully to what I'm about to say. Time is of the utmost importance. The Objectives of your Mission are thus:"

1. Extract HUMAN BLOOMING from the C Company facility.
2. Deliver her to the closest Company safe house and await further instructions.

"The Company intelligence division has discovered plans to transfer the HUMAN BLOOMING anomaly to a secure containment site. If you act now before the transfer is executed, you can acquire the anomaly before site security becomes too tight and before rival Agents in the field can stage their own assault."

"Currently, the target is being grown within a C Company pharmaceutics laboratory. The facility is located within an office tower on the 2nd strata, District 3. Look for the numbers 453."

"With the research material provided by the anomaly, the Company will be able to break C Company's monopoly on the pharmaceutics industry as well as provide performance-enhancing drugs for use on later Missions."

She hums a few bars out of confusion, almost as if not expecting the questions, then speaks.

"Regarding threat levels, while several lab employees have reported headaches, nausea, and feelings of being 'lured' when working with the main body of the anomaly, the anomaly is rather docile overall. In fact, the fruit is typically used as substitutes for human volunteers, leading to expedited drug development and clinical testing. One such harvest can provide enough material for several years worth of trial testing."

"As for site security, I believe there will be a small division of security guards installed in the secure lab areas. The site is expecting heavier reinforcements to arrive when the time for the transfer is at hand. Since this is C Company, all guards are supplied with some kind of combat cocktail, and will be armed with both non-lethal deterrents and small caliber firearms."

"In addition, the laboratory manager has been using some of the anomaly's roots and fruits as a biological defense system in order to cut corners on his security budget. The fruits are not particularly resilient nor intelligent, and require constant direct orders to function. But the harvest has been good this year and the roots have not been pruned..."

"Tell me what floor the anomaly is on, then summarize," you chirp with some aggravation. A few important-sounding bits stick out, but you don't need all of that science research junk.

Company clients sometimes work with Agents directly — for a higher fee, of course — but they are next to useless when it comes to you actually completing the Mission. And because she's new and certainly not Handler material, she just doesn't get how this works.

All of this extra context and sultry tone is intriguing you, drawing you in, and you fucking hate that. The Company doesn't tell you about all the why's and you don't ask. And aren't you on a time limit!

The Handler lets out a deep sigh, as if speaking takes an incredible effort.

"My apologies, Agent," she says in that luxurious voice of hers. "HUMAN BLOOMING can found on the fourth floor of the building. Please use proper respiratory protection and keep an eye out for additional security patrols and anomalous growths."

"Better." You hang up and get moving.

It didn't seem like Control was able to provide equipment, so you left the drop-off site instead of waiting any longer. You walk into the lobby of building 453 and look around. This time, you have your glasses.

There's a road of colored tiles laid out like a red carpet leading to the receptionist's desk and up the stairwell behind it. There's soft glowing light everywhere, reflecting off the smooth tiles and polished stone. Along the walls, there are glass enclosures housing leafy white plants and more lighted wall scones. It's all very sleek, open, and modern.

Beside the stairwell, you see a freight elevator alongside the ones for visitors. One of the workers swipes his ID in the scanner and the doors open. In goes a few handcarts and pallets, out come several researchers in lab coats and clean suits, followed by a guard with an unsteady gait. It's already lunch time, come to think of it.

A class of students walks past, armed with lab coats and varying looks of interest. You're suddenly a lone figure in black in the sea of white. The tour guide is talking about C Company research opportunities in a peppy voice. Looks like she has an ID card of her own...

You breathe in. The air smells like people, antiseptic, cleaning chemicals, and delicious chocolate.

You assess the situation calmly, then come to the conclusion on what exactly you need to do.

You march towards the tour guide without hesitation and unleash a wicked right straight into her jaw. She instantly crumples into a heap. You kneel down to grab the ID card from her neck, when one of the students starts screaming.

Something feels wrong, something sickly is in the air, there's a chill coming through the ventilation shafts like the feeling of narrowly avoiding your own death. The combination of smells, faint chemicals, and the sudden, high-pitched noise cause your instincts to ignite.

Your fight-or-flight response kicks in. Your entire body tenses. The moth brain starts screaming for release! The hate-and-murder pheromones steam out of your body!

YOU FEEL FEROCIOUS!!!

(04. Combat Cocktail) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdQUUBOWzOo

The panic spreads like a wave. Everyone in the lobby is trying to get away from the giant fucking moth who started screaming and twitching violently. You spread your wings as far as you can manage, dropping any pretense to stealth, and let the nerds run.

Terror is the tool — you're using it to clear the path to your Objective. The Objective is not where you are. You need to advance constantly and aggressively to get there. Anyone trying to prevent that is already fucking dead.

In fact, here comes one of those dead men walking.

The lone guard who arrived with the science team takes out a long ceramic knife. His glazed eyes are set upon you. There is no change in his blank expression as he steps forward, drops down on all fours, and starts sprinting straight towards you!

You sidestep erratically and claw at his uniform! His flesh instantly yields as if cut with a knife. Something clear oozes out from the wound and it tastes sweet on your hands.

The guard aims a counter punch, but you swiftly dodge and retaliate with another claw! You catch it in the neck, severing the unnatural vasculature! The body drops to the floor, going still far too quickly. White plant matter flesh starts oozing out of its wounds.

Whatever this is, it is NOT a human being. The Fruit for Human Endeavors dies.

You don't have time for questions. You're just going to break any bowl of fruit you come across before more guards arrive and everything goes down the shitter.

You swipe your ID across the scanner, but think twice and start your ascent up the stairs. Don't get caught in an elevator deathtrap — that's how they got your wings.

Far above, the alarm starts screeching and the intercoms crackle and the emergency orders start rattling off, but that doesn't seem quite right. Whatever.

You reach the 2nd floor stairwell and immediately there's a pack of guards, both human and inhuman together. They raise their voices and their rifles. You can only react...

You void all the air in your lungs out of every spiracle and orifice, and the voice changer mangles it all into a single, sustained, and terrifying shriek! You sense the release of stress hormones as the guards hesitate to open fire. The fruits mutely rush forward with their knives. You drop low, rush forward, then slam up into the closest fruit with your bulky momentum, ramming him into the crowd like a Penske truck!

A fruit swings from your side. You counter with a crushing elbow, but his flesh doesn't break like bones and muscles do. So your third arm unfolds from your body and literally pulps his head.

Meanwhile, your fourth arm has reached into your holster and taken out the Big Iron. You start blasting holes into the fallen guards before there's time to recover. One, two, three, four. Movement behind you. You turn around, wrench the last surviving guard's gun out of his hands, grab him by the leg, and throw him down the stairs. You don't look back to confirm the sixth kill.

You reload your gun frantically as you storm up the stairs to the 3rd floor. The stairs to the fourth are entirely blocked by a thicket of thorny vines. Now you hear the intercoms more clearly — and your bad feeling gets worse — as they drone incessantly "WARNING! WARNING! CONTAINMENT BREACH, HOSTILE INTRUSION ON FOURTH FLOOR! WARNING! WARNING!"

FUCK! You're already late to the party...
>>
But just in time for the massacre.

Several guards lie dead on the vine-choked floor with slashed throats or with bites taken out of their arms and armor. Still more of the strange fruits have been slashed apart and shot to pieces. White flowers in various forms of bloom and wilt are everywhere. There's a clear path cut through them, leading to the end of the hall. Has another Agent beaten you to the punch?

The heavy unbearable stench in the air smashes into you like an ocean wave. The entire hall smells like coppery blood and the special odor of spilled viscera underneath an entire department store's equivalent of dumped perfume. Then there's another smell. You find no words in any human language to directly describe it. You can only say that that pheromone is an object of pure desire. Your claspers start groping around uncomfortably. You let out a primal moth squeak and the noise murders your unnatural arousal. You can't lose control of the situation, much less your own body, any more than you already have...

You get a grip and focus on your surroundings.

This hallway is filled with numerous containment cells, protected with glass walls and housing the experiments located within. To your right, a vivisected fruit with various metal instruments juttng out of it. To your left... it's filled with compacted plant matter, like grotesque flesh. Goodness, that's disgusting. It writhes and squirms, brimming with vitality as it slaps against the glass.

This entire scene reminds you of a visit to the your own Company's Monster Facility, which every serious company seems to have a copy of, where you would rather not have to visit personally again...

You raise your handcannon and start to walk forward slowly. The sirens blare and everything is cast in a hellish, lurid red. How do you want to proceed?

This is what we get for trying to wait around for a gadget. I guess if we fail because of that we can always blame the lack of communication on the company's part for not telling us we wouldn't be getting anything and wasting our time.
>>
You start running. It's go time.

You pass more and more horrors in each cell. More bodies strewn across the floor, cleansuits, labcoats, guards. The smell of death only intensifies. The foliage becomes denser. Delicate buds recoil as you stomp past. Suddenly —

The unwithering flowers violently blossom.

You hear the shattering of glass behind you, and in your 360 degree periphery, a heaving roiling mass of slick writhing humanoid bodies erupts out of a containment cell! The ravenous clicks of dozens of teeth echo even stronger than the sirens' blare — the familiar sounds of newborn hunger!

You point your gun, but realize that it's futile to take a stand. Even with the ludicrous power of your Breaker Bullets, there are simply too many disparate entities for the "breaking" to kill all of them. Unless..?

Your next course of action becomes clear.

You slam down carts, shelves, bodies, anything with weight is thrown to the surging horde behind you. Even the thorns and roses which had borne fruit hamper the fruits' advance, tearing into the pale sweet flesh, seizing, entwining, strangling. And yet the mob stampedes onward, heedless to injury, mindlessly pulping the tender flesh of those who fall underfoot...

You follow the signs of passage through the spreading undergrowth. Cut stems and fallen petals mark the path, along with that scent of pure desire. Your lungs burn with that wonderful, wonderful smell.

More of the horrible plant spawn emerge, tearing forth from man-sized ovaries growing on the thorns and hurling themselves to the floor. Your Big Iron roars death, shredding anything which tries to grab hold of you. Red haze of hallway turns blue with every muzzle flash. The recoil slams in your hand, one, two, three, four —

THIS WAY TO THE EXIT.

You shoulder bash through a hastily-made barricade and ascend to the fourth floor in a frantic cloud of flying papers and gunpowder!

Your target, at last!

SPECIAL ENCOUNTER

Everyone in the stairs landing turns their heads as the 200 pound giant moth comes through the door with a gun in his claws.

The contingent of armed guards smelling bizarrely of chocolate stares you down but holds its fire.

A horrified little man in an important-looking suit looks at you pleadingly, choking on the bladed edge held to his throat.

And holding the stiletto is a beautiful mothwoman in an elegant and bloodstained coat dress.

The smell of her is utterly intoxicating. You have to tighten every muscle to resist walking over to her and burying yourself in her fluff. You force yourself to concentrate on one point. The Mission. You need to accomplish your Objectives, no matter what. Down the hall is the sweet, alluring smell of flowers. HUMAN BLOOMING is there.

She moves at last, fluttering her delicate wings in surprise.

"Ahh finally! Backup! It's about time you finally showed~" she chirps in an voice range inaudible to human ears. "Don't worry, prettyboy. The guards won't fire at us as long as I have their site director. Now, listen. We need to leave before the flower down the hall ruins our evening together, okay?"

I can't tell if the seductive act helps her pheromones control people or if she is just playing cool to hide her surprise or if she really just thinks we're her backup, but I DO know that we can deal with the horde without her. It's possible she's actually after the site director instead of HUMAN BLOOMING and not just using him to fend off the guards on the way to our mutual(?) target, but I wouldn't trust her. Better just hope we can control ourselves enough to blow away the potential competition.

You take out spent casings with one hand and motion with another. The Agent wrestles her hostage over, visibly struggling even with a size advantage. The security team moves forward.

"Say," she whispers. There's a trace of suspicion in her voice now and even then it sends shudders down your carapace. "Weren't you supposed to have a partner in crime?"

"Relax, baby," you mutter. You can't help yourself. "It's just the two of us now, everything's alright. There's always time for fun. It's Friday night. What's your name?"

"Oh? Who the HELL are you supposed to be! You're not my backup at all!"

"O-Oh. S-Sorry. I'm L-Lead, and—"

Then she stabs you in the face with her second knife.

-COMPOSURE
COMPOSURE: 1/2

It's only a surface cut. But there's hemolymph running down your face. And there's pain now, biting and hot, the first time you've been hurt this entire evening. You grab a hold of it. The haze of chemical fumes and pheromones burns away from your mind.

A sense of clarity washes over you.

With a clear head comes clear thoughts. You feel fucking embarrassed for letting another Agent get the drop on you. You're disgusted with yourself for being weak. You're madly in anger with her for making you feel this way.

You want to hurt her. You want her.

You sense some dipshit point man trying to flank, so you quickly load in a round and punch a hole in his head. The other Agent takes advantage of the distraction, but you grab the edge of her coat before she skitters away. You point the barrel of Big Iron to her head.

Whether at the hands of the C Company guards, the strange fruit experiments, or your own, she's definitely not going to make it out alive if she tries to fly off on her own.

"Follow me if you want to live, girlie," you growl as you always do. "Stick with me, we both get what we want. Reinforcements are coming and that dinky butter knife just isn't going to cut it. So what's it going to be then, eh?"

She hesitates. The site director starts struggling even harder.

"Not like I have any choice here," she mutters darkly. "But I can't say I prefer the alternative. Fine then."

She spreads her wings once and a very spicy scent fills the air. You're brimming with vigor!

"And my name is Miss Director, just so you know~"

You slam four more long steel rounds into the hungry chambers of Big Iron. The gun is in your hand. Everything is making sense again. Now all you have to do is take control.

>[FORCE] Roll d6. The first SIX rolls will be counted towards the tally. (+2d6 from Miss Director's Frenzy Pheromones.)

How do you want to do this?

Let's show them why our name is Mr. Lead. Rolling just 1d6, in case the others want to be more reserved with our resources.
>>
1. I'm still working on the dice and conflict system, and will have the results by next Mission. Trying to figure out representing degrees of success/different flavors of results (ie. the 6s as narrative influences).
2. You can roll more than one dice per post to speed up to the next update. If it's not declared, I'll count dice as regular Force first, then Cruelty, then Breaker Bullets, etc.

Aight. Since most people agree to invoke CRUELTY and ONE BREAKER BULLET, I'll roll another d6 for the final F O R C E dice.
We are at 21/35 right now. With 3d6s left, I'm not liking our odds.

>>5789732
Lemme recount.
FORCE: 4+2+4+1+3+6 (20) [QM said the first six rolls are counted as Force rolls.]
Breaker Bullet: 4+1 (25) [an extra 2d6 per bullet]
One roll on Cruelty (my second roll): 4 (29) [an extra 2d6 for using Cruelty. No one has rolled the last Cruelty dice yet]
We got six rolls for Force, an extra 2 from your breaker bullet, and one left from Cruelty that no one has rolled.
We need a perfect six to make it hit.
>>
>>5789743
We actually have 3 more cruelty rolls to go, since as stated here >>5788435 the scenario has TERROR
>>
I'm sort of curious what the other character traits like pride, fear, or hunger would have given. Or what trait Ms. Director has.

FORCE and CRUELTY dominate.

The mooks down the hall start to move as if through deep and heavy water. You feel that familiar rush inside and your hands feel tingly. The excitement and adrenaline overload washes over you and it feels as if God Himself has graced you with all this clarity.

There is no fear. Miss Director watches as you step out of cover and into the firing lines of dozens of soldiers.

The Big Iron comes up again, faster than ever before, and a tremendous thunderclap roars down the hall like the wrath of God! The light and noise is overwhelming as the Bullet shatters through the air, but with their formation thoroughly Broken, you seize the momentum and enter the offensive!

Blindfire whizzes past, you ram into a guard, and hold him tight. The human shield turns into a limp hunk of meat, you toss it into another security member, and leap upon another. One two three four, you barely feel your own claws even as you crack skull and the blood and brains spill out.

Everything is happening so fucking fast, it's going in slow motion. You're feed Big Iron as fast as you can fire and every shot finds their homes in flesh, bone, armor. Your other claws are ripping guns out of hands and tearing apart anything they can get a hold of. You pick up the body of a dead fruit and smash it against a guard until there is nothing left but its legs. You dodge gunfire furiously and break bones as you retaliate, one two three four one two three four. You crush bones into flour, press in flesh, throw corpses, dedicate every wild movement towards the utter destruction and contempt of all other living beings.

The killing frenzy rages on and on, until, at last, you are the last man standing. The enemy has been degraded utterly — Company dogs retreat to lick their wounds. Live to murder another day, yes, yes, yes.

"Baby," you say in your real voice. "Before I met you, I didn't know what I was missing."

Then you turn around and realize she's gone. Both directors are. Looks like she's gotten what she's wanted.

Emergency lights burn red in your ommatidium. Blood plasters your coat to your carapace. Only a trace of that smell lingers. You stand there in the aftermath of all the mayhem and terror you've wrought, but all you can think about is when you'll see her again.

:)

You've acquired a Memento.
>>
Then the moment passes. Moving on.

Following the strong smell of flowers down the hall, you catch your breath, step through the thorn-wreathed doorway, and —

(Lobotomy Corporation Full Soundtrack "story 4") https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKGh9WDDqKM

You raise your arm as a sudden bright white light falls upon everything. You find yourself standing in a deep forest in the middle of... somewhere else.

A flower blooms upon the plot of disturbed earth in the center of the clearing. Its petals are delicate sheets of marble; a lonely and lovely shade of pink among the sea of milk-white roses.

Warped and unfinished fruits slide and dance about in careful movements, side by side with the thorns spreading out in all directions.

Shedding flower petals in place of tears, a quiet voice whispers in the language of the still-yearning heart, desperately, hopelessly, madly in love.

Everyone is politely smiling. This aroma is not one you will soon forget.

What should be done?

I think so, reread our briefing, unless this is an illusion then it fits the description of something being grown rather than being synthetically created or merely held.

Though I do wonder what happens if we drink the nectar or smell it. Maybe some radical transformation. Hell C Company has a monopoly on pharmaceuticals, could be super special buff if we consume it. I don't want the potential side effects though, or for the flower to suddenly wilt after we drink from it, leaving us as the only remaining sample or something lame like that. Then everyone would want to use us as a lab rat and dissect us.

Just do our job and grind that rep, get that money.

You decide to approach. The whispers coalesce into warm words, "Mon amour, it's you for me, me for you in life. We could go away together. Dearest, I beg of you. Press me to your heart. Speak to me!"

You pause. A thought that is not your own appears. How long has she been here, dwelling in this place of great happiness? Another world apart, such a secret place, this life in pink, this land of tears. It is too sad, too sad. He was too young to know how to love her...

But you are too strong, too willful. You will not be swayed by the sweet scent. It's an awful smell, the smell of white mourning. All you know is that violence is the City's language of love. You harden your heart and march on towards the bloom.

You cup the cracked flower in your hands. Its petals are pulsing with life, heavy and hot to the touch, like a still-beating heart. The shrub and roots are anchored down in the unbearable weight of her grief.

So you pull as hard as you can and HUMAN BLOOMING is plucked from the grave earth. Blood spills from its petals, leaving it ivory-white. The thudding of the heartbeat that animates her voice stops, like it had a heart attack. The thorns of her heart tighten. The muscles squeeze tight around and crush you into nothing.

CORPUS: 1/4

OBJECTIVE COMPLETE.

You are in the bloodstained halls again. Your entire body hurts and now your own insect blood soaks into what's left of your ruined coat. And good fucking grief, here come the stomping boots of those reinforcements. You weakly raise your gun and start to reload, but they move fast, too fast in their drug-fueled agitation, moving right past you..?

Awful and as crushing as it is, the smell of grief is strong enough to hide you like a shroud. You mutter a superficial prayer as they brush past without knowing.

You limp down the stairs. Fourth floor, third, second, first. Everyone is shouting, looking for the anomaly, certainly. But they all pass you without looking back.

You stand in the dark streets once again. It's raining. The cold water washes away the rage, the blood, and the smell of flowers. You bring your tattered wings together into a waxy mantle and sink back into the safety of the darkness and chaos of the City...

The knocking at the door is so sudden and unexpected, you are instantly roused from your torpor. There is no drowsiness even in your convalescence; not while you are still on the job. You retrieve Big Iron and point it towards the person just beyond.

"Copper." Your handcannon drops down to your side. All the tension inside of you goes slack. It's the voice of your usual Handler. You open the door to the Red Room and greet the man standing there.

I refuse to explain too much outside of what Agent LEAD experiences. That and I don't have a 100% unified lore document to throw at people.

As for being on Earth... You can drive or take the train to Las Vegas from the City. Good women, good cards, some of the best restaurants in the world (as well as every whacky American regional memefoods). Indulge in refined gluttony, pure Vegas style. Just as man is man, some things stay the same.

"'Journey to the Center of the Earth' if Julius Verne got a hateboner for Macdonalds" - Lammar

"McDonald's truly is a monument to the arrogance of Man. Every time I succumb to temptation and eat a combo meal from there, my insides churn and the salt stings my mouth. And yet, eating it instills a sick euphoria" - /wbg/

"There is always a city of men. There is always a magic work of men. Man always falls. Tell the story again, arrogant man. Tell the story again, prideful man. Tell me the story again, man of greed, says God, as Babylon falls. Et-fucking-cetera." - Anonymous

Spoilers for inspirations, naturally. Not a completely comprehensive list, just the ones off the top of my head.
For the main crux of the Quest (playing THE ULTIMATE IN BADASS COOL AGENT MAN): Lacuna Part I. The Creation of the Mystery and the Girl from Blue City, and Hollowpoint TRPG
For the setting: Project Moon (Lobotomy Corporation and Library of Ruina), SS13, Don't Rest Your Head TRPG, Fallen London, LISA: The Pointless, and BLAME! and other Nihei works.
For themes: The Ocean Game TRPG, Madness Combat series, SS13 again, a lot of thrillers and action movies and comic books, real life.

Big thanks to my friends Jack and Lammar, /tg/'s /wbg/ server, and (You) :)

NO MORE HANDLER VOTES PLEASE.
My heart is set. The Butterfly Man cometh.
>>
>>5793330
It's cool!
Being a complete psychopath murder bug is a unique concept and its working out so far
>>
"Pineapple." Your code response seems to wither in midair as the Handler himself steps in.

The Butterfly Man. Thin and long-legged, with his large white wings folded upright. Always dressed in that same dark gray trench coat and bowler hat. Never in a hurry, moving like he has infinite time.

You don't say another word. You don't breathe. The sounds beyond the doorway have died away, as if the City is holding its breath. The Handler looks around, his clubbed feelers swaying from beneath his hat, then at you.

"Agent LEAD," Officer SILVER says.

"Yes?"

"Let's review tonight's results, shall we?" He motions to the table, for you to take a seat. He will, as always, be standing.

DEBRIEFING

Tut-tut. He writes something green on his clipboard. "Did you really have to use the Breaker Bullets in the City proper?"

"It was either them or me, and I've decided to live another day," you explain.

"Hmmm. The results are quite spectacular, aren't they? But there are laws, statutes, and regulations that must be adhered to. Today's casualties are quite... acceptable relative to your prior numbers." A high note of praise, coming from him.

...

"And she was alone?"

"She mistook me for her backup, but they were a no-show." The Handler cocks his head. The pen moves. You squirm like the insect you are. "Yes, she was alone. We traded a few words, cooperated against the guards, then she left. Her target and mine were not the same, thankfully."

"So it seems." He clicks to himself. "By the by, from our own intelligence, another party had disabled the camera systems before any Agents arrived. You have a very memorable profile, Mr. Lead, so that effort saves us the trouble of executing our own media veil-out. A happy coincidence."

You nod quietly, whether it be a threat, an insult, or a mere statement.

...

"I was somewhere else... I stepped out of the lush forest," you struggle with your words. Everything feels fuzzy to recall. "But when I looked back, it was really a lab room."

"Given the circumstances, it seems you had been exposed to a psychoactive substance. Were you properly equipped to handle the anomaly?"

"That fucking client!" You can barely restrain your rage in front of this man. You've realized just how bad you were affected by the anomaly, both you and Miss Director. "I was standing by the equipment pipe for so damn long! Nothing came through!"

SILVER stops writing for a moment. You remember who you're talking to and force yourself back down. He sighs and presses a claw to his head. "Requesting your services and not providing guidance in the field? It will simply not do for our clients to behave this way. I will have to speak to the Directorate about this... breach of procedure. Hmmm, hmmm." That's his way of apologizing, you think. He must have been in your position, once upon a time, you think...
>>
File deleted.
"I didn't even know flowers could cry. Its feelings were manifested... Like a physical force." You approach the end of the debrief with as much as you can say about the anomaly. It's hard to put into words.

"I can't offer an explanation for anomalies. It is by definition, of course." He titters, politely. "One more case for the files. That's all. There are millions of such stories in the City. This was just one of them." You accept that. Sounds more reasonable than whatever emotional nonsense you were being exposed to.

"Under these... extraordinary circumstances, the Company is very pleased with your recovery of the anomaly." The Handler takes out a half-full sheet of gold star stickers and places one right on your coat. Huh. You're just one away from getting promoted. "Your payment will be disbursed in the usual time and method. We will discuss further compensation later."

"Now then. Let's wrap this up." He claps his claws together, then slides a Potentializer 3000 across the table. You force your terrified moth brain to relax as you place it under your head. You can't get used to this.

You pull the trigger with an unshaking hand. A roar of static reverberates throughout your carapace. You struggle for a moment, then succumb to the pain. Oh, it is so, so dark here...

Your realization awaits...
Rethinking prior experiences...
Inserting into the deep blue...
Employing immediate heuristics...
Assigning semiotic importance...
Who will you be today..?
Initialization... OK.

When you come to, SILVER is already packing away his briefcase.

"So what happens now?" you ask as you groggily stand. Your insides feel dazed, but you feel... different. Stronger?

"You must be well, LEAD. Be well. But you've said that already. Much better than I can now." SILVER turns to give a knowing (and all-knowing) look from the doorway. "'It's Friday night. There's always time for fun.'"

"Bastard."

Your Handler laughs, unfolds his wings, then vanishes past the threshold of the door. Once he's well and truly gone, do the sounds of the City start to come through again.

Gonna have to veto that. Choose another Downtime activity.

Funnier answer: Unfortunately, you have lost too much blood to honor the age-old moth tradition of CHASING WOMEN AT NIGHT. You'll probably gas out in the middle of the chase and find yourself in the clutches of the Spidermen. You might die to police brutality or, worse, have to show up at court at an appointed time.

Everybody's heading somewhere, good or bad. THEN

"... hold still." You brace yourself. SILVER walks over and, with a firm yet gentle touch, slides the knife out of your face. As you put pressure on the wound, he inspects it under the wan light of the bulb, turning it this way and that. SILVER takes one of the medical spray bottles in the Red Room and spritzes into the puncture. You squeak in rage and indignation as it gets onto your eyes, that shit stings!

"My apologies. I was merely lost in thought. This knife presents a most curious case." His antennae twitch upright like receiving signals from Heaven. "I've seen this manufacture of weapon in the hands of members of the Bolverk Mining Company and those foreign investors from the East. Many of these have been disseminated throughout the City. Quite lethal in the hands of... skilled combatants."

"Can you help me?" You whisper, low but with intent.

"In what way?" Another head tilt.

"I want to find the other Agent. Miss Director. It's her knife." You keep your voice as neutral as you can. This may be between Agents, but this time... it's personal.

"Quite a bold request, LEAD." Tut-tut-tut. "I'll grant it, however. I'd like to see where you go with this. Knowing you, you'd probably try to 'return' it. Ha-ha-ha."

It's not blood you're out for, but you stay quiet. SILVER scares you, to be Frank. You feel giddy, having made some headway already.

"A few words. Don't go rushing off straight after her on your own. Wait for my assistance. I would advise you to be discreet in your investigation, but valor is better suited on a man of your Talents. And do try to reign in those... impulses. You've gotten enough blood on your hands already."

"Thanks SILVER." A man is only as good as his word. SILVER's word is gold.

"Hah."

In the City, in a split second, time changes and the pipes shift...

NOW

You come to this bar at the top of the world when you want peace of mind and a damn fine cup of coffee. There's a word to describe the fact you've just attacked a major C Company facility and are now enjoying the smell of their beans, but it slips your mind. Quarters jingle in your coat pocket. Even though the binocular stand is free, it just makes more sense like this.

The City is divided into several vertical layers: Surface, Urban, and Suburban, which are further divided into strata, floors, and subfloors. Since you are currently in the upper-central floors of the Urban layer, you can peer both up and down into the residential districts, above the lives of people and under their feet. You used to do this when you were younger; it was always a treat to see the City's shifting skylines when you were safe.

If people can go mothing, a moth can go people-watching. So you peer through the binoculars and start watching.

And so on.

The hostess of the cafe keeps flitting around and asking too many questions, like the busy bee she is. "How're you doing?" and "did you like the coffee?" M Company women annoy you to no end. But you like the owner of this cafe and the bartender is a good fellow, so you just politely push on her face to make her go away.

She runs away crying, betrayed by a similar-smelling "friend," but that's better than getting her blood on the nice tablecloths.

And so on.

Two men stagger out of a nearby bar, fighting all the while. Without fail, a random woman starts screaming like an alarm clock. You reach for Big Iron, but the words of SILVER echo in your head.

Jesus. She's not even slightly involved, or at any risk, but she's been screaming for several minutes now, long after the two were scared off by the pursuing cop...

And so on.

A man in a gray gas mask hands his fellow City dweller a few dollar bills before walking away. The hobo throws the money on the ground, hissing at it like he was burned.

And so on.

Looks like Public Safety is on the prowl. An entire line of those lanky Hazmat Workers with their bulbous heads and long cloaks goes marching round the block.

"Keep your City clean," so say the recycling signs. Or PS will, you add. Don't fuck with the Department and they won't fuck with you.

And so on.

A small child runs around with a toy pistol, blasting off a few foam darts. The faint outline of an Officer sneaks up behind him... but only tussles his hair. They talk for a bit. The Spiderman reveals his holster to the kid. You swear you can see sparkles in the kid's eyes afterwards.

And so on.

A woman in a long coat wanders down the street. Something small, black, and many-legged is kept close to her chest. She cradles it like it was her own child.

And so on.

A young man is showing off his cool and new butterfly knife to the girl he's talking to. He does his best to attempt a badass knife trick. He fucks it, cutting himself and dropping it to the ground. The girl laughs. So do you.

And so–

"Hello!" "Hello, sir!"

Two very identical women are staring at you, armed with smiles and clipboards. You realize, for a moment, that they don't smell like M Company Workers do. Or like sisters. Or anything alive either. No sweat, no body odor, no human pheromones. Just the smell of new clothes and plastic.

It's fucking creepy.

"Hello," you growl with your second voice. They don't seem to react at all.

"Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen, if I could have a moment of your time, please?" No one else is here by the binoculars at this time of night. She leans in with a finger raised. "My name is Sarah, and I'm a representative from the Organization for Containing Extraordinary Phenomenon, or OCEP. We're working towards creating a safer environment for all of us."

"OCEP is an organization dedicated to understanding and managing extraordinary phenomena." Right lady chimes in. She makes the same gesture with her other hand. "These are unusual and sometimes dangerous events that occur, and we work tirelessly to protect communities like yours from their potential harm."

"We're currently gathering signatures for a petition to raise awareness about the importance of funding for scientific research into these phenomena. By signing this petition, you're supporting the efforts to keep our communities safe and informed. Your signature can make a significant impact!"

"O-Okay? Uh huh? Sounds pretty good? I guess?" You realize they're trying to box you in. No way but through. You hold your hand out and Leftie gives you the petition in question.

There's two boxes of categories. All other signatures except for the owner's, the hostesses', and Ed's are gibberish letters. What the fuck.

"Sir, we worked really hard on collecting those signatures..." Leftie starts muttering. Her entire body tenses up and you brace yourself for the tears. If you could scowl, you would.

"Ah, ah. Ah, ah." Rightie can't believe it. She looks at you, then at the petition, then back at you, like you've just murdered her partner.

"So?" You growl. There's that good feeling again, the feeling of dominance over the scene. "Get more signatures."

"Sir, we worked really hard on collecting those signatures..." Leftie repeats, staring at nothing. "Sir, we worked really hard on collecting those signatures..."

"Can you fix her?" you ask Rightie. You're getting riled up again, but the fear and the discomfort keep creeping in, like the taste of a bad cocktail mix.

"Ah. I. Uh. Can you please repeat the question, sir?"

"I just said-"

"Can you please repeat the question, sir?"

You must have flipped the switch for executive functions to OFF. They just keep repeating themselves. Completely bricked. Ah well. You reach into their pockets and start looking for loot. There's nothing on Leftie, nothing on...

There's a small hard paper in Rightie's pocket. It's a business card. There's just a lot of gibberish letters embossed on the malk-white paper like the petition, but the address is left perfectly coherent...

You've kept your cool and a secret is revealed! You acquired the coordinates to an OCEP containment site.

You step away from the binoculars. Those two weirdos can go freeze to death out here, you don't care. All the energy leaves you. You feel extremely tired. You are tired of bothersome women, and from the debriefing with SILVER. You know it is only Company policy, but you cannot resist. You are tired of the day's demands, physical and mental. It must be very late at night, certainly. You flap your wings. It's too cold.

You want a drink. You step into the clean and pleasant café. It is well lighted. The light is very good and very bright, and the bar is polished. The barman is still there. Ed likes to stay late and the old man permits him. For there are those who need a light for the night, those who need the café...

"Ed," you chirp in your real voice. You don't ever snarl at Ed, even if your voice is embarrassing. "The one with the honey, lemon. Warm."

Ed sets down the glass mug and a little metal stirrer. The steam feels good against your face. You unfurl your proboscis and the whiskey burns down the whole length of it, like the sudden recall of the word "irony." You pause. You squeak repeatedly as you laugh.

"Ed."

"Yes, LEAD?"

"I've met a girl. I don't really know her name, but... She smells really nice. Know what? Let me tell you about all the shit I had to deal with today..."
>>
"WITH REGARDS TO MISTER LEAD." SILVER's immaculate handwriting can be read even without your glasses. Just for you (and for any others), he gives the large print treatment. "WE CANNOT GIVE YOU A LEAD FOR YOUR INVESTIGATION TODAY, BUT WE CAN GIVE YOU HELP FOR YOUR SERVICES RENDERED. - S"

Nigger is purring neotenously as you approach, but you walk past in your excitement. Not now, gattino. You undo the neat spidersilk ribbon...

You inspect the vial. Even though it seems to be filled with that puke-green fluid, it feels a little heavier than it should. The enclosed instructions book looks intimidating in its distressingly dense font, but SILVER has helpfully written his own summary in red pen:

"Ether Solutions Has a Solution Just For You
Type HCV19 "ORACLE" and Informant Communications Manual:"

"WITH REGARDS TO MISTER LEAD. 1. TAKE YOUR MEDS. 2. WAIT FIVE MINUTES. 3. SPLASH VIAL UPON NECK. 4. WAIT UNTIL THE INFORMANT GETS SETTLED, HE WILL KNOW WHERE TO GO. 5. REPORT TO CONTROL FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. -S".

...

You were busy playing with lil' Nigger when you saw the microphone in the corner of your eyes. You put down your magcat ("Mrow?") and check yourself in the mirror. There's a radio headset growing out from under your head, just above the thorax. There's no pain or discomfort where it's sprouting out. It might as well been there since you matured. Tapping on the microphone produces a little feedback in your right side.

Huh.

You press the PTT button and speak. "Control, this is Agent LEAD. Control, do you copy?"

"Agent LEAD, this is Officer SILVER." His voice comes through, clear as night. "Let's review the Mission."

"Your Objectives are two-fold:

1. Investigate the last known location of the Survey Team.
2. Retrieve any equipment and remains.

"The Survey Team was sent down to chart the territory of tunnels and establish an exploration outpost on the 5th strata of the Suburban layer. This is one of deepest expeditions into a Black Zone to date. However, the team's signal was lost several hours ago."

"In exchange for the recovery of its fallen, the City's Department of Health and Sanitation is willing to provide the Company with the vital maps and geospatial intelligence necessary to mount our own expeditions into the deeper Suburban strata."

"You will be provided with the proper equipment for depth diving, including a specialized gas mask, air cylinders, armored wetsuit, and air analyzer. Stay alert against the danger of igniting accumulated gas in the sewers. Creating sparks by striking metal or simply shooting that handcannon of yours can cause a catastrophic reaction with the methane and other gases in the air."

"The Department has shared the Survey Team's final communications with us. Our intelligence division has determined the main active threat in the area to be:"
>Unusual underground phenomena, including inconsistent topography and spacetime anomalies.
>Sections of tunnels used as dumping grounds for Company experiments and biological waste. Also, sewer crocodiles are real.
>Those... things wearing gas masks and gray jumpsuits. Officially documented as an undocumented tribe, the City has deemed them homo sacer and thus, should be treated as "kill on sight."

We're not gonna be talking a lot this mission, best have something to deal with the dark, the deep, and the embarrassing. Given that a lot of the threats we can select also involve multiple opponents, I doubt merely having one boost to force will see us through the encounter when we may be in for a prolonged fight. Plus we already fight good.

>"Black Zone? Mind clarifying that, at least?"

You feel tingling sensation as the sound of flapping wings comes across the receiver. Oh boy, he's definitely going to *elaborate* this bit.

"Think of Zones like the layers of the Ocean. White is surface zone, closest to the lights of the City, Gray is below White, and Black is at the very bottom. The relative danger of each Zone increases with depth."

"This rather simple threat classification system was established decades ago by N Company during its first expeditions within the City proper and to the surrounding areas. Most City Departments and Companies like ours use these terms, but ordinary people would simply call them 'good,' 'bad,' and 'worse neighborhoods.'" You snicker.

"Let's review the location of your Mission first."

"Black Zones are contested areas of high danger, often marked by the presence of hostile factions and highly unstable, widespread anomalous phenomena. For instance, radio signals and light sources become difficult to keep operational. Black Zones are of the abyss. Somewhere under Nevada, there true darkness. Relentless, hopeless, savage, illimitable. Human beings cannot persist for long in those conditions..."

"... Huh."

"Gray Zones are areas of Company interest due to infrequent and discrete anomaly appearances within these regions. Agents are usually sent into Gray Zones to recover very unusual, very profitable anomalies and minor oddities, which leads to factional conflicts of interest. A word of advice: I wouldn't stick around if the lights are flickering in a Gray Zone. Few survive being trapped inside during a Blackout event."

"White Zones. These are your 'normal' locations, such as the City streets, Beetleburgers, residential districts, and so on and so forth. But what is normal, really? It isn't difficult for a White Zone to become a Gray Zone with enough time and murder." You can feel his disapproval all the way up from here. Your antennae twitch.

"Just like last time, please be discrete, Agent. Killing is a powerful tool in your capable hands, but it is not always in your best interest nor your Objective."

>"If I have to choose between the remains and the equipment, which is more important? Who's remains or which equipment is most valuable to the client?"

"Hoooh. You will not have to choose; the extraction pack in your assigned equipment has more than enough charges to secure the entire team and all else that remains. In fact, that same pack will be your method of personal exfiltration. All that is required is the time and safe space to calibrate the pack before you can send things back to the Urban layer."

"But. If you are forced to secure only one corpse, try to find that of Captain Axel. He will have the most sophisticated equipment out of the entire team as well as a backup of the collated data from the expedition." A heavy pause. Then he's muttering, more to himself than you. You can't quite hear it but...

"... always was the truest, stanchest old chap in the world... shame I found out this way ..."

...

Figures that the old man has his own reasons for seeing this through.

Maybe that's why he called you down for the Mission, someone to get it done and done right. Heh.

>"Were last known coords included in those final comms? I can't investigate if I don't have a location."

"Naturally. The team's final coordinates will be provided on your assigned navigation system."

>"Is a spare NVG pair included in that depth diving kit?"

There's silence on the line at first. Then a snicker.

"... You're a moth, LEAD," SILVER drawls. "And weren't you the one bragging about your 'superior sense of night vision' at the last Company party? Yes, indeed! That was also when you got stuck on the flypaper while you were half-drunk! Ha-ha-ha—" You are struck by the sudden need to fly right into a bug zapper and die. Of course SILVER would fucking remember that; he's got all the dirt on everyone in this Company, the sly bastard. "— ha-hah."

You hang up, you're real getting sick of this long-winded prick.

You hate sewers and you're starting feel real sick inside.

You are NOT wearing your usual badass police coat, but this horrid armored wetsuit instead. It's thick and tight and too damn warm, and it's chafing your carapace and folded-up wings. It's like walking through someone's mouth from how wet and hot it is.

The smell is fucking atrocious. You can't think of any worse place to bleed out in than here. All the sewage and waste water and garbage and shit pouring down these tunnels like blood down the veins of the earth, pipes and pumps rushing and circulating miles and miles in every direction, and you running around like some rat in a pumping station maze.

You're wide awake thanks to that mmm yummy yummy modafinil mushroom-tasting extract. Thanks to that, you sense all of this happening around you with greater clarity than before. At least there's drugs which help suppress the smell — there's drugs for anything and everything in America — but the accumulated stench of human waste is still unbearable.

Anyway.

You need to focus. You're still on the 4th strata down and are looking for a way down. The service elevator broke down, so you pried open the doors and continued on foot.

You stop moving and listen. Here comes the stench of hounds and the sounds of multiple footsteps. Seems like a small group, maybe four to eight people. A superbright beam of light is coming around the corner, cutting through the dark like a knife. There's no time to call for Control; in a few moments, they'll see you.

How do you want to begin?

Traits and Equipment:
[CRUELTY] Currently 2d6. Increases in strength as the overall Scenario escalates in TERROR.
Breaker Bullet (FORCE, 2d6 or Special). Manufactured by B Company. You have THREE of these impossibly powerful bullets. Used to fire a "breaking" effect and an ordinary bullet.
Company Depth Diving Gear (INSTINCT, 2d6 and Passive). Robust gear set used for subterranean combat and depths exploration. Includes tools and high-tech items such as diver reel, folding shovel for clearing fatbergs (and bashing heads), diving dosimeter, cameras drones, etc. The night vision goggles had a note on it: "JUST IN CASE - S." This equipment can be burned in an emergency, but you'll be down several tools...

That's the way to do it! Nice 6.

Anyway. I'm currently looking for other potential themes of Officer SILVER, unless you guys think these are sufficient. Something jazzy and/or mildly authoritative is necessary.
1. (Lone Survivor - The Director [Extended] [HD]) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsCvWF8THKA
This calming theme is better suited for debriefing/results.
2. (Ruby Quest OST - The Room Is Boring) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rLkKvbUf-Q
This is suitable for when SILVER starts rambling like an old man.
3. (Ajoura - Marshall, Carter & Dark, Ltd.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeK97iKL0t0
This seems sufficient overall, I think.

Here's the theme for Mister LEAD. A bad man doing bad things to bad people.
(Coconuts - Silver Lights) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcMz3aAZDv4

Going to see if I have to draw a new OP image myself (likely) or ask someone else (unlikely; requests were not answered) with LEAD in a cool pose. Tried AI generation and it sucks!

Your internals are set and secured and you feel fully prepared to do what must be done. You put your will over a weak mind and successfully force yourself to ignore the absolute discomfort of submerging yourself chest-high into the crud and sludge. Just focus, focus on the Mission, just lie back and think happy thoughts, dreams about nice-smelling mothwoman mates, yes, yes.

Muffled by the water, you hear so many running footsteps above you, keeping pace with the trot of their own hounds. Orders are barked and the stray dogs reciprocate with their own. All this agitation in the air; those Gray shits are on the warpath again, certainly. You feel a distant sense of dread in knowing they're fighting their own battles down here, under the earth...

The barking of albino dogs is getting farther away. You are drifting further and further downstream, slowly but surely and quietly. You catch onto a stray thought to distract yourself. Only these Gray assholes have the knack in taming the strays of the City. Blind mutants act as loyal and faithful hounds to these monsters in jumpsuits. Lightning-fast reflexes, uncanny instincts, and razor-sharp teeth. They say that they are not quite dogs, but descendants of a dream of dogs. SILVER probably said that, eh?

Eh?

There is a little gray man kneeling down by the edge of the path. He has a makeshift spear on his back and he is just staring at the dark waters, scrutinizing all the dark shapes moving down the tunnel vein, like ships passing through the night.

Then he turns his head.

The two of you stare at each other for a precious moment. You both understand. Only one option here.

Wordlessly, he takes up his spear in both hands and you—
>>
(Judge Bitch - Hot Plates) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gATKeoPnlh4

"MAURICE!!!" The cries of the Grays echo up and down the sewer pipe, in hellish terror. Your new friend rushes down the hall towards the commotion until you are alone in the murk. You just manage to straighten yourself when you hear, then see, the largest, meanest crocodile to ever stalk the City's sewers come crashing down the tunnel.

aaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA—

Maurice is absolutely gigantic. He is swollen to the size of six men and his limbs are filled with strength. His back has rows of hermetic scales like chainmail, his hide is filled with harpoons and his head with fishing spears. His mouth is a doorway, ringed about with fearsome teeth. There is nothing in his eyes but pure hatred, malice, and a brutal intelligence entirely devoted to figuring out how to kill and eat you.

[THE VIOLENCE HAS ESCALATED.]
[THE VIOLENCE HAS ESCALATED.]

In a matter of seconds: The Gray men pile on top to try to wrestle the Goddamn sewer Leviathan into submission. It almost works, this live burial under the writhing pile of limbs and weapons. You furiously paddle through the waste to climb onto solid ground. They seem to have gotten—

Then Maurice *explodes* into movement and catches one of the houndmasters into a lethal deathroll. You hear the familiar sound of a neck cracking as the Gray seizes up and falls limp between his jaws. The corpse is swiftly torn apart by Maurice's next rolling revolution. Blood and scattered chunks of flesh and bone spill into the water and into the air.

All of the blind dogs are barking. Everyone is screaming and thrashing and fighting for his life, altogether. Dozens of Grays are raining blows upon the crocodile, but he doesn't seem to be hurt at all as he continues to trash and struggle. A flick of his tail caves in the chest of a man unfortunate to get too close. Your secondary arms start to wave as the panic surges through the air and the mad melee continues.

HOLY FUCK, it's coming this way!

You take out Big Iron and consider your options:
>RUN BIG MOTHNIGGA! Take flight, laughing and wailing, into those hidden side access tunnels of antiquity.

You feel the heavy trigger of Big Iron in your hands and the taste of death pheromones on your breath. Your will is strong and your gun is very, very large.

With most of the Gray army sent reeling, Maurice breaks away and puts on a burst of speed as it covers the distance! An entire ton of crocodilian hatred comes barreling down the corridor. Everything seems to slow down. You stare death in those reptile eyes. There's the feeling of being drunk yet focused, unstoppable but afraid.

YOU WILL FIGHT

Actually, one more question. [THE VIOLENCE HAS ESCALATED.] here >>5798485

Is that what is buffing our [CRUELTY] to 4d6 like before? Or was that a sign that Maurice was getting stronger from its own ability because it is the one assailing the greys and receiving the benefits of being the object of terror while we aren't because we aren't really terrorizing anyone, nor attacking a sane rational being?

Because if we are getting the 4d6 Cruelty buff from the scenario and not our new Talent then surely we still need to roll the additional die from said newly bought talent and perhaps not need to spend the bullet.

Thanks to >>5800436 for giving me the idea to go back and check.

You bring your leg upward and prepare to crush Maurice's skull. The crocodile is gaining speed, breaking into a furious gallop! Closer. Closer! Now!

You work your legs like a guillotine and swing down, the kick hammering dead onto its target! Pain explodes up your leg; the mass of bone and scales is as solid as iron! The jaws of the beast are slammed back down, giving you the chance to rear up for another kick—

Faster than you can react, Maurice jerks his entire body to the side, sideswiping your other leg with his tail! You plunge into the deep sewage and Maurice bears down upon you, his teeth clamping upon your leg with tremendous pressure! You try to aim Big Iron, but then the weight of the monster slams you down to the very bottom of the water. Your organs feel fit to burst!

-CORPUS
CORPUS: 3/4

Get off scum! You strike out blindly into the murk with terror, fear, rising anger and hatred. You keep trying to aim the Big Iron, but, as if that monstrous intelligence senses what you will do with that Bullet, Maurice starts to thrash about even harder! The teeth are gouging, cutting, tearing, and all the while, you can feel the terrible tension building up in that musculature, which will spell your certain death...

-CORPUS
CORPUS: 2/4

It's all glancing blows against those scales like serrated plates, prying the jaws like this is impossible, so you change tactics and start rolling along with him. This fucking crocodile is entire weight classes above, but you reach forward, find his head, and gouge at something soft. He writhes and you redouble your effort, struggling as hard as you can to get free, with all of your hands, wildly, desperately—

You push it back. Hard. And there is no missing from this distance. The barrel of Big Iron is pressed against the scales and the thought of making it suffer, of Breaking its teeth into bone shrapnel crosses your mind but—

You Break the grip upon your leg and Maurice cannot keep holding on! Something hurtles into the water, you reach out, and jam the spear right into his upper jaw! He can't bite down! So you surge forward, cramming the gun right down into his gaping maw, and—

Ker-crack!

From under the drink, the tremendous potential of the Breaker Bullet is unleashed. You Break through Maurice's body from the inside! The muzzle flash from inside his guts hits your senses like a fucking bomb. All you hear afterward is the sound of bones crunching as they shatter.

You are thrown back and out, slamming against the hard stone walls of the sewers. A spray of guts and gore and sewage comes raining down in your wake.

Everything is ringing and blinding and the entire world hurts hard. As you lay back, soaking in filth and exhaustion, you know that the Leviathan is dead.

Goddamn, you fucking love your job.

[The Scenario is calming down.]

(After The Party by Kevin Richard Martin) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaVkQ6tIYvc

The Leviathan is dead, but you're not safe, not down here, not yet. About as snug as bug in a rug in a blender. Footsteps. You're hurt, but the thought of rest is terrifying. You fight against the pain, staggering, regaining balance, and bring Big Iron up once more.

The hunting party is coming this way. Sightless hounds are growling and the Gray are on the prowl. You keep your distance as a few Graymen rashly and repeatedly shove past their comrades to get to you. Most are wounded but you do not want to be within arm's reach. Their deathgrip has killed Agents before, from what you've heard and what you've felt...

In the distance, you can hear more of their particular gait, spasmodic and unnatural: a sudden burst of running footsteps into silence, an abrupt cessation, then back into running at full speed. Deadman's Walk. Dozens are moving out there, but moving past this scene. One appears at the edge of your vision, but his head sharply turns up and behind him and he goes still, as if listening to someone else's silent and secret orders, before nodding and turning away.

"Maurice is dead, Maurice is dead," the accursed men are saying among themselves, in that same disgusting monotone which they all share, a verbal mark of Cain. One cheers, utterly exuberant, but he falls silent after the sound leaves him and he fades among the unmoving crowd.

"Explain yourself," the spear-wielding one says. His weapon no, yours is dripping with blood, a stolen trophy of your kill. The others just stare and stare, murmuring among themselves and to the empty air. No words, just nonsense, at least from this distance. "Syndicate?"

It's almost impossible to determine anything else from their (lack of) body language. There's a sense of underlying agitation in the air. Choose your words wisely.
>"I'm just passing on by to the lower levels."
>"I'm working for the Company. Step aside and you all walk away alive."

I'm guessing they don't like them since they dislike red and blue? And so on. Then one laughs. He jabs his fat finger at you repeatedly, with the same robotic thrust each time.

There's no joke, at least, none you can hear, but they all share in the laughter. It's a familiar sound and it gets a rise out of you. Yes, it's one of your own laughs thrown back at you — loud, deep, hard, and mocking, echoing up and down the tunnels.

There's that prey feeling again; predators all around, ready to feast if they turn their dread attention upon you. Then, pure resentment. The thought of instantly killing everyone when you fire your gun crosses your mind. Each bullet is worth more than these scumsucker's lives.

But in the end, you simply don't care enough to do that. All that matters here is reaching your Objective. Just walking away from all this is fine. You're the biggest man here and you could give less of a shit about these miserable lowlifes living around in the bottom of the literal shitter.

Even as they laugh, the hunting party is wading into the water, hacking apart floating chunks of crocodile with decisive cuts from their knives, splashing and murmuring all the while. Scant seconds have passed and they've already lost interest in you. Chop, chop, chop. Everything's fine, get back to work onto the bigger and better projects in our station in life.

There's only one Grey standing on "dry" land. He's glaring intensely at you.

"Go west. Left. Elevator," Spearman says tersely, his voice somehow audible above the commotion. He reaches into a pocket and throws a pristine bruise pack at your feet. You take it. "Payment rendered. Get out of here before we kill you, you fucking insect nigger."

He laughs hard once, then joins his fellows. You get moving. Forget it, LEAD, just keep your cool.

Looks like that's all for now...
>>
Clean outside, sterile within. Bloodied claws cut from gripping those sharp crocodile scales tear open the packaging. You apply the bruise pack gingerly to the worse tear in your leg, but there's no pain as you expected there to be; the wound closes instantly on contact. The hole in the wetsuit is no longer there as well.

Now where the hell is west? The navigation system gives off a dim light, but the little dot representing you keeps jumping across the quadrants on the screen, even as you stand completely still at the tunnel junction.

Something's not quite right in the air. Stinks of course, but there's the subtle trace of ozone suffusing across the darkness of the waters. The concrete bottom of the tunnel seem to be melding into T Company station tiles and the stonework of the walls is becoming more and more ancient. The ever-present turbulence and dripping of pipework are simply... not there.

This space is compromised. Looks like you'll need to get your bearings the old fashioned way, relying on your senses and understanding of the land...

Become less sensitive to insults and no-no words. It will make you a stronger and saner person. 4chan is the last place on the internet where you can say NIGGER FAGGOT KIKE SPIC BITCH CUNT and more freely without consequences or illegality. More often than not slurs aren't even used as insults here, except by very heated arguing anons or during /pol/-related moments. People call each other "my nigger" or playfully going "you faggot" from time to time, or other times it's for emphasis, and so on. That it disturbs and filters out overly-sensitive normal people that wander in or occasionally post is also a good thing. The internet is also more fraught with insecurity and weakness nowadays, from political hyper-polarization and hypocritical morality due to the decay of irl. If you are new to /qst/ or to 4chan as a whole, I suggest to do the common newfag advice of "lurk more". This means staying silent and not posting, but instead reading and observing and trying to understand board/thread culture, developing your own self and not being so anal about things in life. This isn't reddit or facebook or twitter or other cancer social media... yet.

>We're in the Black, but we know something few people ever get an inkling of. The Sprawl must grow, the City's Hunger eclipses even that of the inky darkness. When N Company conducted their first examinations of the abyssal dark and the phenomena therein, they realised the only way to push it back permanently was Sunlight. Ever since then the City has crept ever deeper into the deep below, the Suburbs gradually becoming Urban blocks via the same tech that powers our extraction packs and the Warp-in discs; beaming in Sunlight directly from the surface. We can find emergency extraction stations in the broken spacetime of the T Company tunnels, used for when employee get trapped, we just have to reverse the function with a little fiddling and set the coordinates for the Surface, oh, and they're pay-per-use, even for employees of T Company. Figures, right? If we can't find one of those then we can risk fiddling with our own extraction pack to get an emergency use out of it, at the risk of burning some of our valuable charges needed for the mission and our own extraction. If even that fails, well, we've actually been down here before. Just close your eyes and step to the left. Think of where you want to go and go with the current. SILVER didn't understand our first question for the faux-ignorance it was, his analogy of the zones and the depths compared to that of an ocean was more apt than he realised. These spacetime phenomena are natural parts of the deep dark, if you know the currents then you can rise higher or sink deeper at your leisure, assuming you are willing to risk your sanity and health. Luckily, we're acclimated, having been almost as deep before. This'll only hurt a little bit.

Rolled 6, 3, 4, 1 = 14 (4d6)

You're down in the deep dark. Endless writhing corridors spread beneath the City, an industrial labyrinth of pipes and pumps. 'S like intestines, like veins. All you can do now, without a map nor a guiding light, is follow the current to your destination. You listen intently to the blood of the City softly gushing through the pipework, attuning your steps with her heart...

There's only one way to go, walking with the gas and the flow. Down.
>[ACCESS] Roll d6. The first FIVE rolls will be tallied. (+1d6 from Navigation talent, +1d6 from personal knowledge in write-in.)
>Burn any traits or equipment?

>Write in?

[Information: I will sometimes roll for the Opposition in a Conflict.

1, 2, and 3 now count as successes. Having more successes across all of your dice pools (ex. [CRUELTY] successes + FORCE successes) than the Opposition means LEAD achieves his declared goal during a Conflict.

The highest number(s) in a dice pool determines which pool will influence the narrative the strongest. Domination moves things forward. For example, LEAD rolls 4d6 FORCE into (5, 5, 5, 5) against an Opposition of (1, 2, 3, 5). The Opposition wins the Conflict with three successes, but LEAD's FORCE dominates. In narrative, the other guy gets away with his life (a miraculous escape!) But LEAD will have knocked all his teeth down his throat and stolen his business card. In the next scene, LEAD shows up at his workplace at 12 PM with a smile and an ice pick.

Talents will also not only roll another dice, but add one guaranteed success. 4d6 ACCESS leading to (1, 2, 3, 4) means four successes.]

So we aren't taking the sum of our rolls and hoping to beat a DC anymore? Only 1-3s count as successes? Do criticals not exist anymore, no more criticals sixes? Is this just for opposed rolls or will it be the default system going forward?

How does the 'highest #s dominate the narrative' thing work? In the example you gave, would the opposition rolling a 6 instead of a 5 change anything, or does us having more higher numbers still matter more than rolling one higher number than any of ours? Is this mechanic biased towards us, or will the opfor influence the narrative more if we roll all successes but no high numbers while the enemy completely fails yet gets all high numbers? I sort of get what you are going for with the dicepool type influencing the narrative, but having non-successes give us (or them) more narrative influence is very counter-intuitive. Like, we can still win and have big narrative impact with combined dicepools by say, succeeding a bunch in Cruelty but rolling high but with no successes in FORCE, but sometimes we won't be using multiple dicepools, and again, it's just very counter intuitive.

Still, the auto-successes for talents are nice. We basically get one success at everything we are already good at by default since we have gunplay and terror talents.

A few addendums:
1. Going forward, you will need to declare how many [CRUELTY] dice should be used before we start rolling for a given CONFLICT.
2. In the future, I will give certain items an EMERGENCY flag, so you can burn them any time during a Conflict (ex. after the Opposition roll).
3. Since LEAD has a COMBAT focus, he will always get an additional 6 to FORCE rolls against the Opposition. A scenario where LEAD does NOT dominate will be LEAD: 6, 6, 4, 4, 1 and the additional 6 from Focus; and Opposition: 6, 6, 6, 5, 4, 4.
4. Beating the Opposition's successes by X amount of your own successes means getting better results. Ex. 1 success over the other guy is good, 4 is fucking terrific!

>>5802795
No more DC, and I haven't done "6 as crits" so far.
Yes, only 1, 2, and 3 count as successes.
This will be the default system going forward.
The Opposition die will be rolled for determining success and resolution of an entire scene/task as well risky Conflicts against the City, the Tunnel, etc., important individuals (ex. Maurice if I had switched earlier), etc.

If the other guy had gotten a single 6, he would have dominated the conflict even with LEAD's multiple 5s AND he would have won really hard with all those successes. LEAD really rocked and rolled with his one dice pool of all 5s, thus failing, but that's just the way the dice fall.
Next Conflict, I will declare how many dice I will roll for the Opposition before doing so, so you guys have a heads up on how to tackle the situation (ex. roll this many [CRUELTY] dice, use this item, execute this plan, etc.).
If the enemy dominates AND you succeed, it's a case of "you successfully do X BUT..." and we go from there.

What I have in mind for this system is:
1. LEAD is a badass apex goon and can take on mooks without a sweat or a dice roll.
2. I will only call for rolls against an Opposition, all else is be narrative/player choice.
3. LEAD's only real Opposition are environments, organizations, major tasks, other Agents and Agent-tier people, etc.
4. LEAD will go berserk and can do something terrible if he loses control over himself (ie. [CRUELTY] dominates over FORCE and Opposition).
5. Don't lose your cool.

I honestly have no clue how this Don't Rest Your Head system is going to play in practice, so let's try it out and we can determine if it works or not. We can always switch back to a simpler system if it turns out to be too clunky, stupid, or unsatisfying.

Also, since I've just organized this system out more, I'll give you all this one time chance to decide whether to use [CRUELTY] or not. The Opposition is dominating with a 6 and LEAD is succeeding by 1 success.
>Roll how many [CRUELTY] dice? Only THREE maximum may be rolled (decreased TERROR -> less effective [CRUELTY]). Roll with your vote.
>None at all.
>>
If there's another system which can fulfill what I have in mind, I'll keep an eye out and listen to what you suggest.

>Haven't done 6 as crits
>>5782862 At the bottom of this post you say 6s are crits and also serve a similar function to the new 'high rolls influence the narrative' thing.

Not sure if they were ever actually ever used that way before being changed, haven't went back and checked, but it is there.

I like the emergency flag addition.

I sort of like the changes to cruelty/stuff in general regarding that. It seemed like you were going for a 'relying on [Cruelty] as a crutch' can have negative consequences but it just kinda never came up. This seems like it MIGHT finally make that aspect of what you were going for come out more.

>OPFOR leading
Shouldn't we be leading? 3, 2, another 3, plus autosuccess via Navigation talent for 4 succeses for us versus their 2? Furthermore, we have a combat focus, per your newest addition/clarification we should be tied with each of us having one 6.

>I vote to roll 3 [CRUELTY] dice.
>>
>>5802847
>>5802831
Wait, I'm dumb and got confused part way through writing that. This is still the ACCESS roll, I somehow thought partway through writing that that we were fighting RED syndicate, not merely navigating through the zone still. The prompt to roll cruelty dice threw me off and made me think we were in a fight.

Honestly, I know we can always roll cruelty, but I don't know how it'll apply here. Unless we just Kool-Aid Man our way through the tunnel walls or something crazy like that. Of course if we ARE in a fight then our combat focus die would apply, but I assume I was just being retarded.
>>
>>5802847
Huh, I don't think I brought up the 6 crits rule ever again after that.

Anyway, dice pools are
OPPOSITION: 6, 3, 4, 1
ACCESS: 3, 4, 2, 3, 5 + 1 success from Talent
CRUELTY: 2, 1, 6

Now LEAD is really succeeding, with FOUR SUCCESSES above the Opposition, BUT the Opposition still dominates over both the [CRUELTY] and ACCESS pools.

Fucking dammit, I knew I am missing something to explicitly state: LEAD's dice pools share successes, but do not combine their dice rolls.

Anyway. I will sleep, then I will write the results.
>>
>>5802860
>OPPOSITION: 6, 4, 3, 1
>ACCESS: 5, 4, 3, 3, 2 + 1 success from Talent

>>
>>5802831

>>5802857
AND I misread your redtext. I thought it said the opfor was dominating and leading in successes. Still, unless they also have a talent granting them an autosuccess, I think we should be succeeding by 2, not 1. So I at least got that right, probably.

Your path is oddly straight, as you follow the downwards drains. All this gas just seems to follow your steps instead of the other way around. It's rather heartening to cut through the twisted space so easily, all those years of stalking through the streets of the fallen City paying off in the here and now.

And yet...

Your hands are busy, too busy, annoyingly so. You strike out from the dark, killing all of the Gray men as they come down the halls and across your path. Some of them seemingly materialize out of thin air, out of strange and sharp angles where no man should fit. They run in a circle, looking around, confused at their surroundings. You don't give them a chance to get their bearings. One, three, five. crack crack crack. They may not be men — there's something too degraded within them to walk among you as fellow men — but they all die as a man does. You watch them as they crawl and writhe in murk and let loose their death rattles in the scant less than seconds between each pistol whip. Mute and tenacious bastards. Can't get no satisfaction like this...

Out of nowhere, you hear it. Somewhere down the halls or perhaps right behind you? A distant twisted echo carried on unstable acoustics is going phu-nk-phu-uuuunk-p-hunk. A pneumatic rifle, maybe two. The sounds of vicious close combat are getting closer.

A shiver goes through your soaked fuzz. You don't recall anything being said about a second rescue party from the H&S in the briefing...

[Something wicked this way comes. TERROR level increased.]

You hurriedly step left and to the side. There's a light at the end of the hall. And just like that, you feel suddenly, desperately inexplicably... safe.

There's a nondescript payphone installed into the nearby alcove. Next to it, there's a set of stairs heading downward. You feel relieved at not having to face an elevator again.

In lieu of quarters, you simply whack the payphone until it spits out the required coinage. Here, you can contact Control in a more stable fashion, allowing for an item requisition to take place.
>Requisition a piece of equipment (FORCE or INSTINCT)? (Roll 3d6. You will also have to wait for it to arrive.)

Motha, we aren't gonna be talking with the reds, give us the good shit.

Thought about taking battle trance, but we have the phone for that. Sure, there is a risk we may be interrupted before we get it, be forced to retreat and give it up to the enemy, or to take an unfavourable fight. I think we'll be fine though, especially once we overheal.

Memento because Maurice was a real one and accidentally the strongest motherfucker this side of the planet, may as well take home a keep sake.

First things first, you need to make a phone call. The moment your claw taps on the receiver, it starts ringing. Huh. Something about this is... You pick it up.

"Control, this is Agent LEAD," you chirp, muffled through your own respirator. "I need weapons, equipment. I need more bullets."

Silence. Silence? You strain to hear and just faintly, there's labored breathing coming through the other end. You wait. And wait. Then the other guy chuckles. You hang up in disgust.

Fucking prank callers.

You dial in the Company line and repeat your request. It takes a bit for your call to connect, but the Company always picks up when you're in a safe space while on a Mission. It's the only time the Company takes calls from you. SILVER must have explained it long ago, but you don't care to ask why or for a repeat.

"Copy that, Agent. We'll send some medication down to your coordinates. ETA in 5."

"Good girl." You hang up.

You spy with your many eyes... another welcome sign of civilization, the health station. However deep they go, the Depth Divers of the H&S install these emergency devices near the hazardous environments they've mapped out and conquered. Prying open the panel reveals a rather full internal reservoir of medicine. You stand where the station indicates and a rather vicious-looking hypodermic needle extends out ready to transpierce standard H&S armor...

But you dodge, swiftly.

Something is still lodged in your leg wound. You've seen the results of induced regeneration over an embedded object. It's a very effective method for pain and infection, but you'd rather avoid those for yourself. You pry it out...

Hmph. You turn the crocodile tooth this way and that under the lone payphone light. It fits rather neat on a little length of paracord. Smells like plaque and blood and shit, like a mouth full of broken teeth. He certainly was a tough old bastard, but not tough enough.

You check the navigation device and start to walk in the direction of the dot...

A human scream of agony mixed with metallic screeching echoes down the tunnel. You pause. The wailing continues. Multiple male and female voices are screaming in unison. Just as quickly as it started, the screams simply stop. All the raging terror is suddenly replaced by a vacuum. You swing the beam, right, left, right. Down this tunnel, up the other. There's no one there.

Fuck, where did—

[INSTINCT 3 - SUFFICIENT] You shine your lamp down at your feet.

Just inches away from grabbing your leg, is a disgusting claw of fused meat and metal. Long silver wires for fingers are about to scratch deep and take hold. A sharp inhale is your only warning before it strikes.

You stamp down hard. Bones crack and metal crunches. A pale terrified face peeks through the floor like a diver reaching for air. Without a sound, the hand and its owner recede downwards, slipping through solid stone.

You aim your gun directly down, finger on the trigger, then stop. There's no trace of that freak. The underhalls are empty. It's just you and the dust you've kicked up now.

Now you've seen everything. You keep Big Iron at the ready in another arm. Phasing... What was that? Didn't look or sound anything like Warp-In or Warp-Through tech. The thought of it following you crosses your mind for a moment.

You stop mulling things over and start walking through the corridors.

Here is a series of catwalks over an empty abyss. Chains rattle and jingle as you brush them past and step through the veil of tormented industry. The groaning of machinery underfoot once again. Still deeper depths...

You flash your light down. You can't find the bottom, the walls just keep going down, down, down. There's a long trail of dried viscera running down the edge. You are sure human blood doesn't turn that black when it dries. old sins

What the hell is the purpose of this place? You murder the thought instantly. Everything about this place is putting you on edge. It's a waste of time to psyche yourself up wit these kinds of thoughts. Just keep moving forward, LEAD.

Your own tracking device indicates you are very far from the remains of the expedition. Your own dot has to find that cluster of others. Little man on the screen is still moving away. Still kicking, eh?

Let's begin.
You see before you...
>A long winding stairwell leading down. The old blood trail goes alongside it. Fresh signs of a struggle are present.
>The red emergency lights of an ordinary maintenance tunnel. Must have been activated lately.
>A formerly barred off hallway. The iron bars are bent as if by a tremendous force.
>A spiraling, twisting hallway with a door barely visible at the end. Somehow, it hurts your brain just to look at.

INVESTIGATION PHASE - START!
Objective: Locate and extract the Survey Team.
Progress: [0/100]

[Information: LEAD will always gain Progress during the Investigation phase, even on failed rolls. Successes will speed up Progress gain, while Domination will usually shift the Scenario in LEAD's favor.]

How do you want to handle the Investigation?
Tunnel's Opposition Rating: 6d6
>Brute Force. Roll FORCE + ACCESS. Generates more Progress, but comes at a risk of gaining TERROR, prompting an Opposition reaction, or entering an encounter.
>Steady Search. Roll INSTINCT + ACCESS. Takes more time, but lower risks as above.
>Use traits or equipment?

Free write-ins.
>Look for what clues and how? (Looking for specific clues will give information on the Scenario, Objectives, etc. LEAD will not look for anything specific by default.)
>Conclude what? (Making a correct conclusion about the Scenario or Objective will add to your Investigation's progress.)
>Contact Control. (Ask a question?)
>Use equipment?
>Write in.

Based on Fear the Dark quest's tracking system. Let's see how this plays out.

Traits and Equipment:
- [CRUELTY] [ANY, 3d6.] LEAD's personal Trait. Increases in strength as the overall Scenario escalates in TERROR. Domination means more sweet, sweet suffering, even if it costs you your mind and safety...
- Breaker Bullet. [FORCE, 2d6. SPECIAL USE. EMERGENCY.] Special ammunition carrying a "breaking" effect. Very broad applications. ONE LEFT.
- Depth Diving Gear. [FORCE or INSTINCT, 2d6. UTILITY.] Robust paraphernalia used for subterranean combat and depths exploration and surveying (ex. shovels, rope, air analyzer, and NVGs). If you want a tool, you probably will have it.
- Crisis Ampule. [ANY POOL, EMERGENCY] Upon use, replaces non-success dice results (starting from 4s, to 5s, to 6s) with the corresponding numbers: 1, 1, 3.

SPECIAL USE - Can be used outside of Conflicts.
UTILITY - Can be used up for either FORCE or INSTINCT Conflicts. Passively useful as well.

Do we still have to burn the depth diving gear to get the 2d6? It is no longer clear how it works or even how it ever worked. The previous Passive description made me think it had the obvious narrative utility of allowing us to take a dive in the drink safely or ignore gas, but also that we'd maybe(?) get 2d6 passively but we obviously didn't. So it seems we have to actively burn it for a bonus, but then do we definitely burn it like a one time use thing or is it only lost depending on the context?

> Depth Diving Gear. [FORCE or INSTINCT, 2d6. UTILITY.] Robust paraphernalia used for subterranean combat and depths exploration and surveying (ex. shovels, rope, air analyzer, and NVGs). If you want a tool, you probably will have it.

Ignore this if we have to lose it permanently to get the bonus.

>Look for what clues and how? (Send our camera drones ahead. Check our dosimeter, check our depth gauge, watch for any sudden skips in either. Briefly put our NVGs down and look at the blood and surroundings, look for any infrared light from electronics or an abnormal amount of light even on low power settings or using passive settings.)

The prior description of our depth diving gear includes camera drones. Are our NVGs passive or active NVGs, or are they fancy future-tech ones with both?

>Conclude what? (We've literally entered the underworld, the land of the dead. Where no light can penetrate. The face we saw was a ghast swimming through the inky black trying to get to the light in our eyes, the metaphorical air it was searching for. Or maybe we're just paranoid and waxing lyrical, the darkness brings out the imagination to prevent the mind from dwelling in itself overlong.)

>>5805478
Previously it was stated [CRUELTY] or anything in brackets could be used in any scenario, sort of like the current SPECIAL USE description. Does that still apply now?
>>
>>5805475
>>5805512
Also, in addition...
>Contact Control. ("Control, I'm Deep, no light works, NVGs no good in this darkness either. Encountered a critter that can swim through the walls and the ground. Not Warp-through tech. Please advise.")

If anything we're ahead of the reds. I'm not worried about them ambushing us if they intercept this. It's a race now, with the environment our mutual obstacle. We may very well not encounter each other at all if one of us reaches our objective long ahead of the other.
>>
>>5805512
>>5805514
Burning depth diving gear -> get the 2d6 for FORCE or INSTINCT + YOU LOSE THE GEAR AND WILL SUFFER.

PASSIVE flag is more a case of "essential/passive/automatic/you can assume it's being used," like you already have a gas mask and will not die by inhaling sewer fume or you already have a shovel to help bypass an obstacle. I apologize for the confusion with making PASSIVE a flag. Also, the Gear is pretty handwavy and mostly background narrative in nature; if you have a write in requiring specialized equipment, LEAD's Gear will probably have it and I will write him using it.

NVGs are fancy. Camera drones are those used in sewer operations, look into a pipe remotely for maintenance purposes. Since LEAD doesn't need to do that as his job, it's not mentioned.

[CRUELTY] can be used in any case. Apply now, yes.
>>
>>5805562
Okay, thanks for clarifying. In that case, just ignore the >>5805512 use of the depth diving gear. My vote probably won't win, but if it does I don't want that included in there.

>gear pretty handwavy, black box with lots of generically useful stuff

Good to know, though it makes it kinda hard to 'be creative in using all of the tools available to you' when many of them are all rolled up in a generic 'you have lots of useful diving stuff' and we don't know what all of them are or the explicit limits of what we can reasonably use the gear for. Not to put pressure on you, it's understandable if you don't want to look up all the minutiae of IRL diving gear plus make up stuff for this setting. I'll just assume that if it wasn't previously explicitly mentioned as being in our gear that we don't have it, better to assume it is just good IRL-equivalent gear.
>>
>>5805562
>>5805599
Or rather, ignore the burning of the gear for the bonus dice, I still want the use of it passively to search for clues.

"Control, I'm in Deep. No lights present down here. I made contact with an entity that can swim through the walls and the ground. Didn't seem like Warp-Through tech. Please advise."

On the other end, you hear sobbing filtered through a light haze of static. What?

"Control, come in. This is Agent LEAD." vee nineteen vee nineteen come in this is no time for

[TERROR level has increased.]

"Control! Requesting advice on dealing with unknown entity. Report?"

"A-Agent. Ahem. This is Control." Her voice is back to normal. Judging from its heat signatures, the entity appears to be a bionically altered humanoid. The signatures were sporadically appearing around your location but right now, the entity is not in your area."

"In addition, I have been experiencing abnormally high signal interference. Your connection with me is becoming unstable. Cause unknown. My suggestion for now is to keep moving towards the Objective and to minimize contact with the walls."

"Copy that."

Looks like the suppressing nature of the Depths is taking effect. The longer you stay down in the Suburban layer, the sooner radio and other communications start to cut out. How long have you— No. Only a few hours at most.

Something else must be affecting your signal. That fucking thing in the walls is the prime suspect. If it can "burrow" through solid matter, the fact that it isn't continuing its assault on you is means it's either busy with something else, it just lost interest, or, less likely, it wants you alive and is playing with you.

Dammit. It's not like the entity will purvey an answer. That glimpse with the flashlight showed a face which used to be human. That tells you all that you need to know about dealing with the entity. Your trigger finger twitches.

Forward.
>>
(Fear & Hunger OST - God of the Depths) https://youtu.be/r1zcdi8QWEE

A long winding stairwell... You can't seem to move your own legs. You can't stop the feeling, so you take one of your camera drones, then pause. Pause and think, LEAD.

You're not a detective by any account, but you can make do with your gear.

Without your primary mothman sense of smell, you rely on man's greatest sense: sight. Your eyes alone are straining even with the flashlight's glare. These NVG goggles will help a little in increasing your field of vision. High intensity light reveals small traces of spilled blood apart from that long, old stain. You see lots of disturbed places where the dirt and dust have been scraped from fighting. Yes, this is the right path.

Radiation, normal levels according to the dosimeter. Depth, stable and no fluctuation, more than 500 feet deep. Tossing a spare hose nozzle head and hearing it clatter confirms there is a bottom (or at least, more stairs). A long length of diving reel is lowered over the edge and comes up unharmed. Seems to be no spatial anomalies ahead. Good, good. You stow away the drone for now. More useful for small pipes and crevices, not for general survey.

Even with all this work to confirm where you are, your brain is squirming. There's an inescapable sense of dread as you shine your light without ever seeing the bottom. The stairs just seem to keep going down and down.

Maybe you're dead, walking around towards the iron-embraced underbelly of some Godforsaken underworld... but then where's the overwhelming fear? The punishment for your sins? Time keeps passing, so you can't be dead. You are still somewhere under the City.

Your work is not yet done.

What you do know is that you have taken the lead. RED team doesn't seem to have breached down here yet. Just knowing that puts a pep in your step.

You adjust your regulator, check the pressure on your air tanks, and prepare to follow the path, to descent to unknown depths below...
>>
Conclusions:
1. An unknown entity is tracking you. It's humanoid and seems to be a source of radio interference.
2. RED team is far behind.

Writing up an H&S lore dump, just for fun. One important bit is that Depth Diving members have access to their own form of emergency extraction pack. Since no one made it back, something must have gone catastrophically wrong, leading to LEAD being sent to pick up and put together the pieces.

Right now, you guys can roll up to 4 [CRUELTY] dice in total (+2d6 from current TERROR level), so that would be one, two, three, all four, or no dice at all. Just roll dice with your declaration or lose your chance when I roll for Opposition.
>>
>>5806945
>>
>>5806890
Thought I might as well try and explain this, despite not being good at succinct explanations. Here's how I understand it.

We want more successes than the opposition. Successes are 1s, 2s, and 3s. 4s, 5s, and 6s are not successes, but are narrative dice, essentially, also called Domination. We want the most rolls of the highest number. For example, having one 6 is better than having four 5s, and having two 6s are better than having one 6. We have essentially two 'tracks' that matter: Successes (1-3s) and what QM has termed Domination (4-6s).

Ideally we'd want the opposition to get weaker domination rolls, but still roll enough domination numbers such that they don't end up with more successes. So, we'd want something like 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 6 for us, and 1, 3, 4, 4, 4, 4 for the enemy. We have more successes, and we have a 6 versus their many 4s, so we win on both. It'd be bad for us if they had 2 6s and the rest in successes because then they wouldn't be 'wasting' a bunch of dice on useless domination.

Conflicts (most of the scenarios in which we have to roll dice I'm guessing) have an order of operation, like we have to declare cruelty dice before the or at the beginning of the conflict, traits/equipment with the EMERGENCY flag can be used anytime, usually after the opfor has rolled in order to try and salvage the moment for us.

Each stat's dicepool's domination rolls only count for itself, but our successes between all pools are shared and summed up. Example|:

[INSTINCT: 2, 3, 4]
[ACCESS: 1, 3, 6, 6]

[Opposition: 1, 1, 1, 6, 6, 6]

Our successes from both pools are combined, we win and do what our selected greentext prompt/write-in plan says we want to do. Our Access rolled higher domination than our instinct and thus takes precedence narratively over our instinct, or would if we won the domination contest. We didn't though since the opfor rolled more 6s.

That's everything that matters. There are minor things like our talents giving 1 extra die, and our Combat Focus selected in the very first vote of the quest giving us an automatic 6 on relevant rolls, but hopefully that is written plain enough or with enough examples that you can understand it.

You light the way and make your way down the stairs. The path is clear to you even if the pressure keeps increasing.

You follow the team's tracks into a warren of indistinguishable brick tunnels and endless empty rooms. You step past smashed apart plastic crates, through busted metal doors, and over another shelf, hastily thrown to its side. The walls are marked by heavy blows and scratch marks. It must have been a frantic egress, but why come this way?

Marching ever forward, you find yourself standing in a rocky area. This must be another one of the many natural cave systems under Nevada. You must be reaching the edge of the City's expansion. It is difficult for the City to continue because, without a proper map or survey team, how will she know where to go? For all you know, you surmise, you might be the first moth to step foot upon these grounds; one giant leap for mankind.

Then you swing your flashlight over to the bodies.

You are not unsettled by the sight of corpses; you've made many of them yourself. No remorse over cold, rotting flesh. But these are fresh. Very fresh and many in number. The spilled blood might as well be steaming from how hot it is.

In the center of torn apart Grey limbs and bodies is an indescribable, towering mass of gore and flesh. You succumb to prey instincts as you keep looking. Even your imagination can't help but to conjure up an image of a hellish, vaguely humanoid horror, two stories tall, barely clothed in tattered rags. Its face is grotesquely stretched out, its limbs deformed to unrecognizable outgrowths. A harpoon is plunged deep through leathery white flesh, into the still-beating heart, and out the other end. Looks like the thing was pinned down and then swiftly gutted of its malformed organs. Oh God, that they still writhe and squirm and pulsate with that unnatural vitality. It's too difficult to keep looking yet too close not to think about it...

-COMPOSURE
COMPOSURE: 1/2

Hmm. You have to bite the bullet, now that you've "adapted" to the sight. You look up and away as you put your boot against a hard bit of flesh and rip out the harpoon for inspection. Looks like the ones used by H&S members working on the Urban layer. In fact, judging from the markings and handle, it is a harpoon used by the Street Sweepers. Why the Hell is it doing all the way down here?

You could extract it immediately, but it would be better to extract a whole bunch of equipment or corpses at once, rather than do the entire extraction process for one item.

While there are no members of the Survey team here, you find an older path of blood-stained tracks leading out of this part of the caverns...

You are in a tight maintenance hall when the ventilation shafts open and a breath of fresh Urban air is sent down. The pressure and depth is still in line with a deeper layer, but you must be ascending back up towards 4th strata now. How fortunate, a spatial twist at this depth usually makes things—

Then, somehow, somewhere, right above your head, you hear the unmistakable sound of a pneumatic rifle firing, over and over. Shit. jinxed it, man You don't know where they're coming from, but it finally sounds like the RED team has arrived onto the scene.

A specific slightly-larger blood pool? Somewhere the wounded person must have rested at before continuing to get away from the attack site. It should be on his path at some point, no doubt. If not here, then further in.
>Look for what clues and how?
"The walls are marked by heavy blows and scratch marks." but could they have been made by our mystery wall-phasing monster? Or that two story tall pale thing that got harpooned? Or something else entirely? Examine those limbs on the thing and ONLY it's limbs, then think back to the hand you crushed of the wall-phaser. "A disgusting claw of fused meat and metal. Long silver wires for fingers about to scratch deep."
Either of those monsters could have done that damage to the brickwork of the tunnels here, but who is the most likeliest based on the shapes of their "natural" killing tools?
>Look for what clues and how?
That harpoon, these greys... Is this the same hunting party that left us after Maurice was slain? Is this harpoon the spear that one leaderlike grey was using, or is it just a whole other group of greys being ganked by a creature of the darkness? Think back to what you saw after Maurice...

THEN, IN THE WARRENS

These marks on the walls...

They remind you of the weapons used by Street Sweeper teams on the Urban layer. This division of the H&S is equipped with their signature harpoons and conventional firearms, alongside the traditional Department's obstacle-removers like the sledgehammer, the shovels, the water pressure jets, and on and on. Some of these marks are not from their weapons, deeper, more feral...

The Department is full of tenacious bastards. Not just in the sense of being hard to kill. You've learned that antagonizing one branch of Health and Sanitation means antagonizing the entire City. How foolish you were then and so young, when you did not yet know how to love the City you live in...

You get a weird feeling all of a sudden.

Something is very wrong. You find yourself asking again, uselessly, why is a Surface team all the way down here?

LATER, IN THE CAVERNS

The spear bastard from earlier is dead. His brains are coming out of his ears and his guts spilling out onto his lap, but those hands of his are still clenched in a death grip. If it weren't for those mortal wounds, you might think he is just resting, only for this moment, about to stand up once more and continue the vicious hustle for his homeland. The spearman must have hurled his harpoon and in that single hit, rent that hideous heart with all of his inhuman hate. It is clear that this Greytider went down fighting as a man. You kick stone dust over his body out of highest respect... then spit on the corpse for him being a rude motherfucker.

Hah.

Now this thing... It doesn't seem to be augmented with any bionics and it is much, much larger than the man-sized wall-phaser. This devil from the Deep is another entity, separate from the broken cyborg which first attacked you. Until you find its body or put a bullet into its head, you can "safely" assume the phaser freak is very much alive and active.

Hmmm. Everything is coming together. The Survey team must have been lost down here and were constantly assaulted during their Mission. Their terrified retreat and the light they bring down with them must have chummed the waters, brought the entire 5th strata crashing down upon them, and this Grey hunting team followed, fought, died.

There is still that one survivor out of this whole mess.

The harpoon feels heavier in your hands...

You hear a sharp metallic inhale. The reaction is instant. A pale arm reaches out of the corner, shoots right for your head, your hands move—

[FORCE 5 - EXCESSIVE] Big Iron cracks out a shot into the right arm and the offending limb sails off in an arc!

Sinewy wires and machine viscera spray into the air! The arm jerks back and fades into the concrete. A look of horror is written on the surfacing cyborg, but you don't stop to relish in its disarmament. You muscle past and rush straight ahead.

It is so, so close now. The sounds of steel crashing against steel, water splashing in a storm drain, the grunts and barking orders. You swivel your head and look down the grate you stand upon. There! In the darkened goggles and iron bowler hat!

IT'S THE CAPTAIN!

He stands alone in the pipe, fighting off three operatives in blood-red armor. Just as you thought, somehow beating you to the punch, is the RED team! A giant in ant-like power armor advances upon your target, rearing back with his hydraulic claw for another strike. His comrades follow close behind, one aiming with a long rifle and one in a red beret holding his pistol at the rear.

The largest takes another forward lunge, but the Captain throws himself to the side and retaliates valiantly with a swing of his own! The blow from the war hammer causes the giant to stagger backwards, but you see the Captain suddenly falter. Life-giving fluids are spilling from punctures in his pressurized suit. Death is sure to come, if the RED team does not give it to him first.

You are currently standing on a sort of open catwalk above the incredibly narrow corridor below. If you drop down right now, you will fall in front of the giant, next to the Captain.

You have the element of surprise. What's the plan?

I guess for extra good measure we could also try using the perfumed knife to stab. We do have some extra arms due to being a moth. I think.

You guys are making me feel old.

Lets combine them and add some stuff on top.

>Warm up our extraction kit preemptively, time it so that this will be a short fight, one way or another we are getting out of here shortly after we land next to the captain. Wield the harpoon in one arm, Maurice's tooth and the perfumed knife in two others, Big Iron in our main hand. Open up the fight with our last Breaker Bullet, target the giant with the hydraulic claw. Then jump down on the red operatives with the long gun and the pistol, their ranged weapons will not avail them once we get close in and show them a real monster. Empty the rest of our bullets on the giant or anyone left alive. Then run over to the captain yelling "friendly, friendly, friendly!" so he doesn't mistake us for a deranged sewer monster and extract right away with him.

Or in other words, some combination of all of these >>5810692 >>5810696 >>5810703 plus the addition of warming up our extraction pack before hand. If indeed it is something that needs "charging" before its use.

I like using the multilimbs to our advantage. We could Big Iron the rifle guy (support buddy) or the beret guy (leader type) while we surprise eviscerate the giant (giga nigga). I'm all for this
>our last Breaker Bullet
I still wanna save it. We can use it for noncombat shit too, and I want to see how it does there.
>their ranged weapons will not avail them once we get close in and show them a real monster
Agree
>run over to the captain yelling "friendly, friendly, friendly!" so he doesn't mistake us for a deranged sewer monster
Could also yell something else he understands for all we know.

Ah, you're right, we should if we are the clear victor here. My main concern is the captain though. To quote our briefing *"If I have to choose between the remains and the equipment, which is more important? Who's remains or which equipment is most valuable to the client?"

"Hoooh. You will not have to choose; the extraction pack in your assigned equipment has more than enough charges to secure the entire team and all else that remains. In fact, that same pack will be your method of personal exfiltration. All that is required is the time and safe space to calibrate the pack before you can send things back to the Urban layer."

"But. If you are forced to secure only one corpse, try to find that of Captain Axel. He will have the most sophisticated equipment out of the entire team as well as a backup of the collated data from the expedition."*

He's wounded and possibly dying, I doubt we can treat him with the supplies on hand, not to mention this isn't the cleanest environment to be operating in even if we did. Extracting him is a priority. However, now that I've gone back to read said briefing, I realise that we'd waste to much time spinning up our extraction pack, there is a fight going on after all, we don't have time to waste. I just wanted to have the pack ready to go in case we failed to incapacitate all of the red team members and the situation turned on us.

>>5810669
Taking into account this old info I'll amend >>5810759 to skip setting up the extraction pack, we'd waste to much time. Just keep the rest of the write in.

>>5811001
We're getting promoted after this job, I think we'll gain more bullets. I think they are just 'conceptual' munitions, if we shoot them at a wall for example I think they'll make a big tunnel through the wall, or if we shoot it at something with eldritch powers then I'm sure it'll disrupt said powers.

Your arms fill your hands. A tooth, a harpoon, a beloved knife, and Big Iron are at the ready. You take a deep breath. The ant-like power suit operative stomps forward once more and you hop over the side of the catwalk.

"WE. GOT. HOSTILES!" The Leader shouts, his hand reflexively and robotically shifting upwards, and he fires. You barely register the impact to your chest as you hurtle downwards, landing directly on top of the Heavy!

-CORPUS
CORPUS: 4/4

Your limbs move in unison. Slice, gouge, destroy! The claw reaches up to crush you in an iron grip. You duck and scuttle to his other shoulder like the giant bug you are. The wind of bullets brushing past gives you an incredible rush! There! You find the weak point again, where the helmet connects to the high collar, and continue your work! You shriek in anger as you smash the last of its sensors and are just about to pry off the helmet like a beer tab when—

"DISPLACE!" The Support rifleman lunges forward, red afterimages tracing his sudden rising movement, and his knee smashes right into your center! Another impossible movement into an exoskeleton-crushing tackle carries you off of his comrade and further into the murk! FUCK deja vu!

Your opponent is on top for the second time. The rifle hangs off his side, but before you reach out, Support fumbles in a pouch and take out a wicked long combat knife! Your secondary limbs drop their weapons, reach out, and grab his joints before the blade finds its mark. The armor is too robust to wrench apart or pinch down. It's too close to aim the Big Iron. And the blade is just inches from your face—

crunch

The Captain comes swinging in with a hammer blow to Support's head! The limp body crashes against the side of the tunnel and goes still.

"Come on now! Back on your feet!" You take his hand and the Captain lifts you up, but there's a sharp noise and he chokes and falls to his knees.

"GOD! DAMN! BASTARD!" Smoke billows forth from the RED Leader's revolver. He cocks the hammer again.

The Support is trying but cannot get up, stunned from the sudden blow to his head. The Heavy swivels his ruined helmet and starts surging towards your position.

"MISTER. YOU. ARE. GOING. DOWN!"

Behind you, the Captain takes a canister out from his bandolier. He weakly raises his arm, crosses himself with the other, and the Depth flare ignites.

(Talent: Navigation) You remember your clashes with the H&S. A vehement terror takes hold and on instinct, you recoil from the inimical light...
(Depth Diving Gear) But you are protected from its effects by your wetsuit!

A radiant glow floods the tunnel.

Rolling one FORCE dice. I say that if the rolls look dice, we should use some CRUELTY dice.

>>5811788
Oh god, we're a native! No wonder we have the affect of your average psycho. The skirting chasing makes sense now.

>FORCE Roll d6. The first FIVE rolls will count. (+1 Talent: Gunplay)

Rolling 2 dice for force.

>Roll 5 [CRUELTY] dice

>Use our last Breaker Bullet.

>>5811794
I suggest we use all five cruelty dice, and then use our Crisis Ampule to turn any Domination dice rolled in Cruelty into successes. Remember, per the new ruleset, it sounds likes rolling high domination in Cruelty is really bad for our sanity and possibly health, I suspect we'll lose control and potentially end up attacking Captain Axel. That'd get us on Silver's bad side, they seemed to be old friends.
>>
>>5811788
>>5811799
To be clear, those were for the force dicepool, I'm not rolling for cruelty yet, just voting that we do in fact use them.

Remember, we aren't likely to roll all of them in domination, and our ampule will turn 3 domination dice into successes. So best use all the available cruelty dice imo.

Rolled 6 (1d6)

>>5811788
Final force roll. If someone rolls before me while I write this up then just count it for the cruelty rolls.

As for the plan...
>Toss the harpoon at the Leader, spear him through! He hasn't displayed the durability of the Heavy or the afterimages of the Support. Break the Heavy with our Big Iron. Pick up our mementos with our secondary claws and skitter up the wall above and past the heavy like the bug we are to the catwalks above. The captain seems well suited to deal with the heavy, whereas this narrow space doesn't suit our talents despite our personal affinity for up close violence. Trade fire with the Support, before dropping down to tie him and the Leader down so they can't help the now sensor-blind Heavy. Make sure to tell Axel about the weak point where the helmet meets the collar.
>>

>Roll 5 [CRUELTY] dice
>Use our last Breaker Bullet.
>>5811864
+1 to the plan

>>5811788
>2 cruelty rolls
>>5811897
I expect [CRUELTY] to dominate and for LEAD to do something terrible like rip apart the captain.
>>
>>5811903
So did I, hence me suggesting we use the Crisis Ampule should that happen. However, given our rolls so far, I think unless we roll a 6 now and our opponents do not roll more 6s then that shouldn't happen.

>Breaker Bullet (FORCE, 2d6, Special). Manufactured by B Company. You have four of these impossibly powerful bullets. Used to fire a "breaking" effect (ex. breaks bones, breaks bread, breaks confidence, breaks hearts) as well as an ordinary bullet (ex. if this is used to break someone's heart, she's probably going to die from the bullet now wedged in it).
If only we used the bullet to break the enemy Captain's confidence or leadership, or something else unique

>>5812191
I want to save Crisis Ampule to save the Captainon the fight ending, then have him back us up to where his crew are dead. This way we can salvage ALL the H&S Survey Team and their gear in one fell swoop. Reap the BIG PROFITS. Maybe we can use the extraction kit to loot the RED Team bodies too? Or maybe one of their bodies (the Support?) has a medkit or something to stabilize Captain Axel. We need our VIP alive and kicking.
>>
>>5812191
>BREAKER BULLET [bravery]
>>
>>5812191
NOW I wanna bullet up
>Use Breaker Bullet -> RED Leader's bravery

>>5812212
The RED Leader is up and firing.
The RED Support is stunned from the hammer blow. ("The Support is trying but cannot get up, stunned from the sudden blow to his head.")
The RED Heavy is up and rushing in our direction, but he's gimped in senses. ("...you smash the last of its sensors and are just about to pry off the helmet...")

In this situation, what is the better choice? RED Leader's bravery and confidence, I assume. He crossed himself when he used the depth flare- a clear sign of fear and trepidation. Despite his PUNCTUATED. BLUSTER! He must be afraid of drawing other unknown low-depth baddies to this location. Are there more of RED here or just these 3 fuckers? Wait hang on
>>5796999
>Members of this squad are highly motivated and well-equipped, though few in number.
And then
>>5807708
>you hear the unmistakable sound of a pneumatic rifle firing, over and over.
And now here we got the Support wielding a rifle. Must be the same guy we heard before, above. I think this is the last obstacle for us to overcome unless we do go for the rest of the Survey Team while we're here
>>
>>5812224
Wait no I am dumb. Our VIP Captain Axel is the guy popping the flare. Our enemy is the RED Leader. Even so, going for the Breaker Bullet on RED Leader confidence is a good play here
>>
>>5812191
I'll back the others and say use the Breaker Bullet to break the Leader's confidence.

>Use Breaker Bullet -> RED Leader's bravery

>>5812226
Yeah, hence why I always capitalized the L in Leader when referring to the guy with the pistol and beret. It is how the OP post refers to him.
>>
The Captain's arm falls to his side, his breath wheezing and straining behind his mask. He's been pushed to his absolute limit. "God, help me."

The Heavy is bearing down upon you. In your state of hyperfocus, you hear the whining of servos in power armor.

The Leader fills his hand and you realize that he's not aiming for you. The world slows to a crawl.

In that decisive second, you take aim...
