disclaimer: first time on this board and first time having the guts to start a thread so its gonna suck, but sucking at something is the first step to being kind of good at something, so here we go

january 29th, 1949. it's freezing cold. snow is seeping through the cracks in the wooden ramshackle roof. you're hunched over in the attic, gripping the wood furniture of your late fathers .30-06 rifle, accompanied by two of your closest friends. you've known them for so long, that you can't remember a point in your life when they weren't by your side. one, a slender and lithe-bodied 6'4" teenager named Kjell dressed in a torn military camouflage outfit. the other, named Jacob, significantly shorter but still just as skinny. you could see each one of his ribs through his lightly transparent blood-stained shirt. on one shoulder was wrapped several layers of yellowed bandage, from a wound long since healed. your stomach begins to rumble. you've been here for days.

you try your best to be silent. the only thing you can hear is the heavy breathing of your friends and the footsteps of the people in the house below you. you hear one of them start to speak in a very strange and unfamiliar accent;
> "Well, Ms. Chernakova, I suppose I had bad info. We will be on our wa-"
one of the floorboards creaks loudly next to you as Kjell shifts his position.
> "What.. was that?"
you hear an old woman's gravely voice, wrought with stresses and cracked with age, with a thick Russian accent start to speak.
> "Oh, probably just the squirrels! damn rodents, we've had issues with them for years."
you hear the footsteps of the person walking to where the entrance to the attic is.
you look into Kjell's eyes, once a beautiful color of blue, filled with hope and optimism has been mercilessly drained to lifeless pools of despair. you feel like you could drown in the endless gripping tides of his gaze. a million words had been said in that split-second moment, without a single movement of the lips.
what do you do?
>rack your rifle and prepare to defend yourself
>hope that they don't detect you

you pull back the bolt of your rifle, chambering a round. 6 rounds are in loaded within the internal magazine. the clicking noise of the hammer being pulled back, as well as the sound of the metal banging together when you pulled the bolt back, alerted whoever was searching for you to your location. no turning back now.
> "WHO IS THAT?"
he cocks the hammer of his pistol.
>BANG!
he fires a round through the roof and narrowly misses Jacob's leg. Jacob, practically unfazed, stays completely still, putting his hand over his own pistol that he has holstered on his waist.
Kjell panics and kicks in the trapdoor.
In this split second, you can see the man and what he looks like;
he has what looks to be a mask made of stone on his face, and horrid scars covering the remainder of his head. he's entirely bald, dressed in a fully black suit with black, blood stained shoes.
he has a strange insignia on an armband, depicting a hawk's talon with some text on it. you can't make it out in the moment, however, as he turns to the now burst open attic trapdoor, brandishing his pistol at the entrance, ready to fire.

>jump down at him
>take cover and jump further into the attic
>fire a round at him
>>
Ooohhhh, I'm intrigued. What are we going with here? Evade the KGB post-Iron Curtain victory? Truman's nukes setoff a worldwide nuclear winter? We're yids in the Baltic?
I vote:
>Rack your Rifle (Slowly/Quietly)
What type of rifle is it? Springfield 1903, M1 Garand, or something else?
>>
>Max Payne Shoot-Dodge out of the way (remain in the attic)
>>
>>5782327
you don't know the specific model of the rifle, your father died before he ever told you. all you knew is that it's been used to kill 3 people before, signified by the 3 tally marks scratched into the stock
>>
Is it bolt-action or semi-auto?
>>
>>5782334
it's bolt action
>>
No further questions your honor.
>>
>>5782325
>fire a round at him
>>
>>5782330
you stay in the attic, awaiting the inevitable hailstorm of bullets sure to come to flush you out of it. you cover your ears, as do your friends, as they scurry to spread out as wide as possible, while not revealing their position.
>BANG!
one shot goes through the attic and grazes Jacob's leg. almost immediately, you can see the agonizing pain he goes through as he clenches his teeth violently in an effort to not make any more noise than necessary.
you hear the pistol's hammer cock back again, but you hear running footsteps and the sound of the the old woman and the man wrestling.
you hear Ms. Chernakova scream "G-GET OUT OF HERE BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE! HE WILL GUIDE YOU!"
you hear some banging noises, and then some punches and cries of pain, but eventually
>BANG!
a round goes off and fires off through a wall.
>BANG!
the old woman cries out in pain for a moment before succumbing to the wound, almost immediately.
you hear the man slowly walk back towards the attic.
after a moment, he walks away, and you hear him say something in a foreign language. whatever it was, you hear shuffling of footsteps, and the slamming of a door. the house is empty.

Jacob tears his left sleeve off and uses it to bandage his leg. he lowers the ladder and climbs down to the floor of the house, wincing in pain after putting weight on his leg. he steps in the fresh blood of the kind old Russian woman who hid you and fed you for days, and the stench of death hung in the air. you and Kjell step down next, and examine the brass left behind by the gun. the insignia is carved onto the casing.
on it, there is the talon of a hawk, and text that reads, in big bold letters, "SURRENDER YOURSELF"
you go into the kitchen to see the tables laid out with now half-eaten, cold food, and some drawers and cabinets remain open.

i think this is going pretty well so far

the three of you walk out of the molded and rotting door, barely held on by a single hinge. the frigid air drains you of all the warmth left in your body as you gulp down breaths of icy cold air. the smell of smoke and ash fills your nostrils as you start to shiver near-violently. outside in the yard, there's a shovel strewn about the ground. ahead of you, down the street there is a lighthouse on the coast. to the left, there's a street with an alleyway, where the homeless and impoverished have built a shanty-town network of tents and blanket insulated cardboard forts.
to the right, there is a large government building, made entirely of marble. its presence is overbearing, compared to the rest of the slums. in large text, it reads "THE OFFICE" with two massive posters on either side of the entrance, depicting the yellow, beady eyes of a hawk. the gaze of the bird seems to penetrate you to your soul. you shudder.
suddenly, you think of Ms. Chernakova. she deserves a proper burial.
you go back, and bury her in the yard before leaving, using some 2x4's as a makeshift cross. your friends help with placing her down into the grave.
you push the shovel down into the ground, and place your rifle on your back.
Kjell suddenly proclaims,
> "I think we should go to the shantytown. Likeminded people in our situation would probably welcome us, or at the very least not turn us away."
Jacob responds to him with
> "Don't the Enforcers check that place too often? We have to be fugitives, after that encounter."
Kjell looks solemn for a moment, but finally mutters
"I think it'd still be a better option than a light house."

thank you

you walk down the street, the snow crunching beneath your worn shoes. you feel the bitter cold in your bones as you walk, and eventually reach a spray painted wall that reads
"VILLAGE VISTA -->"
you walk further down the alleyway. it opens up into a small clearing where tents and people lay, wrapping thin blankets around themselves, huddling together. there are some people licking at the scraps of rusty sardine canisters. you can see their hands shaking as they attempt to muster the strength to put the food in their mouths. there were some torches put up for warmth, and a large campfire in the center, and a small area with cans of spraypaint labelled "communal paint". sprayed across the walls from end to end was graffiti. it depicted religious figures, families, gravestones, and above them all was a defaced propaganda poster for The Collective, who are the reigning government of the country.
Kjell sits down in one of the empty tents, and invites you two inside.
as Jacob limps his way in, you sit inside comfortably with him. there's just enough room for all 3 of you to lay side-by-side.

> "Goodnight, guys." Kjell says, as darkness falls upon the sky like a blanket.
you close your eyes.
you dream of some place on a tropical island. you feel the warm sunlight on your skin as you sip water and have a food supply that's not just the bare minimum to survive, but is actually enjoyable. the crashing tide on the shore goes back.. and forth.. and back.. and forth.. as you pay attention to it like the rhythmic motion of your breathing, you notice the waves seem to get larger, and larger.. until eventually, the roaring tsunami in front of you, 50 feet high, sweeps you away.

you blink open your eyes and feel the ground around you is wet and cold. the snow had melted overnight. your friends had gotten up before you, and were sitting outside the tent, now in the moderately warm sunlight of the mid-day hours. you haul yourself to your feet, and hear commotion outside. people are standing around and talking, clinking beers together and drinking, and it seemed as though even if just for a moment, morale had been on the rise.
you look around at the people's eyes. they're baggy and lifeless looking, but filled with deterministic hope. they've been surviving somehow.

you go up to a group of three people enjoying beers by themselves. they're not talking much, but they seem to be of alright spirits.
you ask them about the insignia you saw. something about a talon's claw?
one gives you a dirty look, but eventually sighs and capitulates.
"that symbol you saw was the mark of the Enforcer. they're the lowest level goons who are basically the foot soldier army of the Collective. if you ever see someone wearing a patch with that design on it, you can be assured they don't have good intentions. they beat people for politically stepping out of line, they beat people for 'uncouth behavior', they beat people for whatever reason they feel like beating people that morning. they're monsters."
you ask about the shantytown.
"well, we were all driven out of our homes. we're fugitives. we have people on guard, who hide out in the windows of the buildings to either side of us, ready to shoot down any Enforcer bastards who wander too far from the Office. we built this place from whatever materials we could find on the streets. these tents are made of clothing we could salvage from streets. we're safe here. we get our beer from an overseas smuggler who brings it here for minimal cost. people have been really happy since we started getting shipments of alcohol again, many of us haven't had a lick of the stuff in years."

you ask about the enforcers.
"those guys? yeah, they're the goons I told you about," he began, "the ones who wear the talon on their arm. during the early days of The Collective taking power, they tried to rule by propaganda alone. rallying our spirits, and whatnot. when too many counterrevolutions sprung up due to them becoming more and more tyrannical by the day, they began running a secret operation on children to build their army. they began putting them through rigorous and agonizing training for years, and melting a stone mask to their face to dehumanize them and the end of it. they're not people. they have no thoughts or free will, no conscience to guide their morality. they created their own language to deter people from knowing their plans, but, after capturing one of the bastards and torturing him for all he knows, we managed to crack about a quarter of their alphabet, and we know what a few words mean. the fucker must've been brainwashed down into every crevice of his brain, because after a while, he just hardened like a rock. didn't matter what we did to him, his trap was closed. so we shot him in the head, and strung up his body for a few days, kind of.. as a message. Where the hell are we, the Baltic?
>>
>>5783163
you ask them about The Collective.

> "The Collective's the newly ruling government. After the war ended in '47 with that near-miss nuclear incident that could have wiped out everything from Hell and back, people thought the world needed more 'stability.' The Collective rose as a small party demanding "some liberty to be given, in the name of safety." they claimed that everyone would be taken care of. i suppose they weren't lying, but they did definitely 'take care of us.' one time, i tore down a poster of theirs once, and they had their Enforcer goons kidnap both me and my brother, beat us to an inch of our life, and release us out on the cold street, where they thought we'd die. they had a chalk outline and everything! so much for safety, i suppose."
he takes a long drag of the cigarette in his hand.
> "they built one of those Office buildings in each of the cities throughout the country, and use them as a sort-of hub to resupply their men and do all sorts'a weird shit. some people spread this rumor that, if you put your ear up to one of the walls at midnight, you can hear the screams of the people they experiment on, as well as the screams of the new Enforcers having their stone mask melted onto their face."

>(first time drawing in several years. tell me how I did.)
while deciding on what to do next, you see a poster on the ground (picrel). you reach down and pick it up. it has the words, "PEACE. STABILITY. SECURITY." written behind the posing Enforcer in the center. it's depicting an Enforcer, and apparently, it's a recruiting advertisement. not sure who the hell would want to recruit, seeing the blood and burn scars behind that mask. you fold it up and put it in your pocket.

you ask the man in front of you about that nuclear incident he glossed over.

> "Well, near the end of the war," he begins, pondering for a moment before continuing, "the leaders of the world thought it'd be a good idea to wave their dicks around and threaten nuclear bombs at each other. Our president actually fired some, and we saw the trails of fire as they left the ground. As they soared through the air, we thought we'd be seeing some warheads pointed right back at us at any minute. but.. they never came. some sat there for hours. some for days. some turned to anarchy, and started raping and killing people for the rush of it in what they believed to be their last moments, but the nuclear annihilation never came. apparently, they never reached their target, and fizzled out somewhere over the ocean. the bunker that the leader was in was then breached by hundreds of people. they publicly executed him the next day, and the new leader they appointed was none other than The Collective."

you thank the man for the info he's given you, and head back to your tent where Kjell and Jacob are already sleeping soundly. looking up at the sky, you think it's most likely near midnight. you've been talking to that guy for a while. either way, you settle in and sleep.

you're back at the same beach you were at last time, and the waves are hitting the tides peacefully. you decide to get up, and sit at the closest point to where the tide is, but just far away to where no water can reach you. it's warm beneath your feet. you sit down, and pick up a handful of sand. you can feel every particulate that snakes its way through your fingers and falls back down into the endless mass of sand beneath you. you hear the ground start to shake. not again, you think to yourself, but it's simply too late for that.
your bones are like 100lbs weights, and your every muscle is locked in place, as you find yourself unable to move.
then, like a flash, the ocean pushes all of its weight over you like a blanket, and you feel yourself carried by the current.

you wake up. you were just hit by a bucket of water. you feel the bruises on your body as, what you assume to be anesthetics, begin to wear off.
>SMACK
you get hit in the face by the butt of a gun.
an Enforcer looms over you.
you look around at your surroundings. your hands are tied behind a rickety wooden chair, and you're in a padded room with yellowed mattresses on the walls. there is a single hanging light, slightly flickering as it shines down on you. there's a locked metal door in the wall to the left of you, and through the heavily armored window you see that you're on the inside of The Office building.
> "TELL US WHAT YOU WERE DOING IN CITIZEN 1-9-4-3-9-2-6-9'S, ALSO KNOWN AS ANASTASIA CHERNAKOVA'S HOUSE ON THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 29TH, 1949." the voice booms loudly in your ear.

you spit at him, nearly hitting his shoe. the Enforcer doesn't seem to flinch at this, but instead leans back and stands upright, pulling a small .22lr pistol from his suit pocket. he places it directly on your left eye. you can see the bullet for the split second when light sneaks its way in after he racks the slide.
he cocks the hammer back and asks you again, in that same monotone voice,
> "THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE. TELL US WHAT YOU WERE DOING IN CITIZEN 1-9-4-3-9-2-6-9'S, ALSO KNOWN AS ANASTASIA CHERNAKOVA'S HOUSE ON THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 29TH, 1949."
you hear the sound of a door handle rattling. >BLAM!
you hear the sound of a shotgun blast. you look to your left. the Enforcer lowers the gun for a moment and does the same.
Kjell, wielding a double-barrel 12 gauge shotgun kicks the door in. Jacob is standing right behind him. The Enforcer points the gun up at them,
>BANG!
but is promptly put down with, judging by the massive holes immediately created in his chest, buckshot. potent.

"You okay?"
you try to speak, but you cough up some blood instead.
Jacob walks through the door and sees you, and the look on his face immediately turns alarmed as he sees the state you're in. he unties you.

Kjell hauls you up and carries you over his shoulder. Your legs are numb. Your arms are numb. Everything is numb. you need rest.

you make it out of the building, and they send 4 or 5 more Enforcers to chase you away. gunshots strike a man who was carrying a torch in the leg and back, some narrowly missing Jacob and Kjell
> "I already got shot once," Jacob pants, "I'd really like to keep that number down."

> "These assholes have near infinite soldiers. Only 5 or 6 of them coming out to deal with us means we've got a pretty high chance to get out of here." Kjell says in between breaths. "We gotta lose them!"

last post for the night

you turn a corner, and signal everyone into the abandoned grocery store. the walls of the entrance are- were, made of glass, now shattered to pieces. the door was made of glass as well, with the top frame of the door being miraculously intact. there's vines and brambles growing on the floor, and the smell of mold hangs in the air, stagnating.
you, Kjell, and Jacob all hide beneath the clerk's desk. some hide behind shelves, others hide in the stalls of the bathroom.
you hear the Enforcers marching towards you. the pounding footsteps are so muffled, yet they feel loud enough to be deafening. your stomach churns. you look to your friends.
you hear what sounds to be an authoritative voice call out directions in that same strange language. must be a commander or something. you hear him yell the word "fuck!" in said language. it's one of the first words deciphered by the shantytown residents. priorities.
no matter. you hold your breath and, after what felt like a year, you hear the footsteps leaving the area, trodding away until it eventually is so quiet that it fades out from your hearing range.

you leave the safety of the abandoned shop and look around. the other shantytown residents decide to go back to the tents. some stay with you. a 6' man named Isaac, and a young teenage girl named Sarah. Isaac wields a rusty pipe, and Sarah clutches a cobbled together shiv in her hand. you start to hobble down the cracked and broken sidewalk in front of you, laden with potholes and garbage strewn about it, and as you approach the towering spire, the pungeant smell of seawater fills your nostrils. you can see the coast, the tide lapping at the rocks beyond. they've been made smooth after centuries of erosion. you enter the creaky, neglected, moldy front door of the lighthouse, and are presented with a spiral staircase leading to the lantern of the tower.
you trudge your way up, smelling mildew and rot as you ascend. as you approach the top of the stairwell, a disheveled man with an amputated leg, a full, greyed and yellowed patchy beard is looking despondantly out into the horizon. he has a cigar in his hand. your friends stay behind, and you go up to approach him.
he glares at you with piercing eyes. you try to make yourself appear calm, even infront of this soul-rending gaze.
he speaks in a gravelly voice, cracking every so often,
> "I saw that whole thing happen. Your friends breaking into The Office? They weren't paying attention to this city before, focusing on the biggest one, about 60 miles west. After your little stunt, word got around that they're sending a force to 'modernize' the town."
he pulls out a small, rusty key.
"You'll know when this will be useful. keep it on you, always. Now get out of here, before they spot us talking."

you cautiously back away, and your friends wordlessly descend the staircase once again. you stand at the entrance of the lighthouse once again.
You hear the sound of an engine, and see 4 Enforcers huddled together in a car drive past. They've got ladders and what looked to be crates of equipment. You couldn't tell what was in them before they sped off.

it's February 2nd, 1949. (will start keeping track of the days. this will be important soon.)

it's midnight by the time you get back to the ramshackle town. people have mostly stirred into sleep, and not a sound can be heard over the tents are flapping in the bitter cold wind, and you feel nearly every inch of your skin begin to shiver. you walk over to where the soup line is, and take a small clay bowl of steaming hot broth back to your tent. it's got some vegetables and noodles in it, and the steam emanating from it makes your mouth water. you drink the soup and it settles in your stomach. you feel energized for the first time in weeks.
as you settle into sleep, you don't dream this time. it's empty blackness. you feel so alone. the nothingness envelops you. you feel like you're falling a million miles down into it as it swallows you whole.

you wake up.
you hear the scratchy, radio-like sound of a voice.

"LONG LIVE THE COLLECTIVE. SURRENDER YOURSELF. LONG LIVE THE COLLECTIVE. SURRENDER YOURSELF."

you rub the sleep out of your eyes, and wake up. your friends haven't gotten out of bed yet.
you walk down the alleyway exit, past the sign that reads "VILLAGE VISTA", past the garbage cans and disposals, to the sidewalk outside. you look up at the streetlamps that line every block of the city. there's something different about them.
there's some kind of.. metallic object, blasting the words out of it. you've heard of these. they use them in the biggest cities. they call them 'sirens', and until now, they haven't been used.
wires are shoddily and hastily strung up across the former streetlamps, with barbed wire around the base of the streetlamp. most likely to deter would-be sabotage attempts.

you look up at the sky. there's a zeppelin flying above, with the image of an eye on it.
"THE COLLECTIVE SEES ALL." is painted across the side of it.
that old man was not lying, they amped up propaganda efforts tenfold.
you hear the sound of marching. 20 or so Enforcers are marching down the street, with a man leading them infront, his stone mask painted red. they're carrying some really good rifles.. if only you could take them.

quickly, you duck behind a garbage can and peek over. the group of Enforcers walk in lockstep with eachother, as if they were a single entity. you see one glance at where you were for a moment and stops marching. his commander doesn't notice him breaking the march. he draws his pistol and begins walking towards the garbage can, slowly and cautiously. you don't have much time to prepare.

>take out your rifle and prepare for a fight
>run back into the alleyway and alert everyone to the incoming attack
>pretend to be a homeless guy sleeping (roll d20 for deception check)
>hide inside the garbage can

My condolences, one day AIPAC & the ADL will lose their grip on America, & when they do there will be nothing left for Pissrael to hide behind from their crimes.

silently, you crawl inside the tumbled over garbage can and pull the lid over you. you nearly gag from the smell but try your best to keep your nose closed and breathe through your mouth. you feel a slimy sensation on your left hand. it's a discarded banana peel. you shudder and pull your hand away.
you freeze as you hear the terrifying footsteps get louder and louder as they approach you. you hold your breath as every moment feels like eons. the stench envelops you as you hear the footsteps encroach and just when you think you're about to hear a gunshot, and a fade to blackness.. you hear an angered voice scream out something in that language the guy at the shantytown talked about. hesitantly, you hear the footsteps turn the other way.
cautiously optimistic, you wait 5 minutes before exiting the garbage can. the coast is clear.
you walk back into the shantytown.
you see the men gathered around in a circle, around a man with his face down in the ground. you can't see through them, though, but you do notice that every single one of them have a gun, knife, or blunt weapon pointed directly at the cowering body lying on the floor.

you push through to see what's going on.
there's an Enforcer with a slightly cracked mask, showing the horrid burn marks on his face.
you can see blood staining his uniform.
shakily, with his hand in front of his face, his voice trembling as begs the horde of people crowding around him,
> "I ABANDONED MY POST! I'm TIRED OF WORKING FOR THEM! I- I WANTED TO JOIN YOU! I.." his voice cracks.
> "I had a name, but I forgot it a long time ago. Now, I'm just known as.. 'Enforcer ID #139.' "
he sags his head.

one resident screams
>"HOW DO WE KNOW WE CAN TRUST YOU?"
pushing the pistol in his hand further forward.

> "You.. don't, but I- I- I have.. I have info! Valuable info I can share!" desperation shakes in his voice.

>take out your rifle and blow a hole in his head
>listen to what he has to say
>hit him in the face with the butt of your gun and force him to start talking
