In a medieval fantasy world, my journey begins.

Basic Concept
This is a reverse Quest. The players (You) take the place of the QM, and decide the situations, create elements of the setting, and arbitrate the result of the player's (Me) rolls into success or failure.

After many days of travel, I approach the City with the Red Walls. While the journey was long, many sellswords and adventurers have come to this city because...
>Of the treasure rumored to be in the dungeons below
>A wealthy lord is promising riches to anyone who can cure his sick daughter

Rolled 2 (1d6)

^This Roll determines my Magic Lore^

I am a Scholar, or sometimes called a Sage, with specific interest in this far off, and somewhat mysterious city. Hungry for knowledge, I work for an order of scribes known as the "Wick-Key"; represented by the candle and a key. Those who follow the order of the key keep secrets, and those who follow the candle find and illuminate more. I belong to the Order of the Candle; and I have come here seeking illumination.

However, it is inevitable that those who seek and guard knowledge learn things. I have gained access to arcane secrets and knowledge- in other words- a tiny bit of magic. My magic is specialized, and is nothing compared to fantastical creatures or more powerful practitioners of the magic arts, who may or may not even exist. However, the lore I have plumbed has granted me secrets and powers which are very real.

My lore is...
>1) Lore of Flowers
>2) Lore of Songbirds
>3) Lore of Scissors
>4) Lore of Twine
>5) Lore of Mist
>6) Lore of Cobblestone

This mystic lore has granted me a special ability. Using this magic, I have...
>Spells which conjure & control the Lore's subject or emulate its effects and symbolic meaning in other beings or objects. These spells are strong, but limited in number of uses.
>A magic object made of/related to the Lore which is extremely useful or special in some way. Its use is unlimited, but the Lore is useless without the object.
>The ability to evoke the Lore in spiritual or psychic combat as a form of attack or defense, or otherwise use it to bolster my abilities.
>Perception over the Lore which can divine truths and secrets that no normal person could.

My name is Tanric Trifle and I am a scholar for the Wick-Key within the Order of the Candle. Seeking secrets and truths- I just so happen to have a very special gift. I can talk to birds. This magic ability may have been something I was born with, or may have awakened as a result of my many studies over the course of my life- sketching and observing the habits of birds- I began to understand their tweets and songs- finding secret meanings beneath the noise. Only trouble? They don't often have anything valuable to say...

My skills and abilities I have learned, as well as the results of my studies, have given me the following bonuses to various rolls and situations.
>I am quite knowledgeable about magic, history, law, natural sciences, engineering, and astrology. For rolls relating to knowledge or lore on these subjects, I gain +3
>I am polite and well versed in etiquette, the many peoples of this world, and their cultures. For rolls relating to polite conduct, debate, persuasion, and introductions, I gain +3

Quest Rules
In order for a vote/response to be considered valid, it MUST follow the following format. The player (Me) will roll a d20 and ask a yes or no question, with bonuses to actions that are relevant to the characters stats and abilities. The resultant roll determines which of the following responses must begin your response.
>(16-20+) Yes, and...
>(11-15) Yes, but...
>(6-10) No, but...
>(1-5) No, and...

The “And” responses are total successes or failures, with an additional detail, complication, or advancement embedded in the response that enhances the result- either success or failure. The “But” responses are more partial successes or failures, but with an element of the opposite to balance the situation. For example, if the roll was “Do I manage to help beat back the Orcish attack?”, the responses may be-
>Yes, AND you gained respect among your fellow warriors.
>Yes, BUT reinforcements are on the way.
>No, BUT you gravely injured the Orc's leader.
>No, AND you ended up getting captured.

Success and Failure are meant to move the Quest along, and any ridiculous or story-ending response (No, AND you were killed by the Orcs) will simply be ignored or reworked into something more usable. Remember, this is YOUR Quest, so you should make sure everything that happens is interesting and moves the story along!

Rolled 11 + 3 (1d20 + 3)

^This Roll is for the Prompt at the Bottom^

Finally, I have reached the City of the Red Walls. Wanting to gather as much knowledge as I can for the Wick-Key, I stop outside the city to enjoy a light lunch and sketch the outskirts of the city and its skyline. The impressive wall of the city, its main feature, stretches around the vulnerable citizens and buildings within- and is meant to protect them in times of trouble. Across the horizon, I see fields of farmers and game-forests meant to feed the people, and a nearby river rich with fish and fresh water to also provide for the people within. I know the inside of the city must contain a granary where these foods are stored to protect them, as well as a vault of riches- possibly a keep or guild-hall where the leaders and rulers of the city can meet or extend their power.

But even so, Ive seen few other travelers on the road and heard few tales of the city. I watch the city closely to make mental notes on the type of society I am about to enter...
>Cosmopolitan mix of many races and demihumans living in an egalitarian society.
>Society of humans with a sizable minority of subhuman creatures making up a lower caste.
>Poor villagers and rich lords in a very hierarchical human society.
>An unusual people you have never encountered before (Specify)

After my lunch and initial sketch, I know I have to actually visit the place and poke around to get any useful data for my research journals. While some scholars of the Wick-Key may simply fill in their books with hearsay and speculation- I have intergrity. Despite the trouble it gets me into sometimes...

I approach the city on food, suddenly being stopped at the gate by a heavily armored guard. He seems gruff, and violence is definitely not my strong suite. He steps into the path to stop me.

“Halt! State your business!”
“Hello, my good man. I am a Scholar, here to visit this fine city and catalog its rich history and people! I have no goods for sale nor intend to cause any trouble. I also have the coin to pay my own way without burdening the citizens within with charity. Surely, you will allow me to pass?”

"Yes- but first, my check out for tattoo!"
"Huh?"
"Gangs bad! Offend priestesses. Take off clothes!"

Ugh. How annoying. In order to get a better look- the guard takes off his helmet revealing something underneath. He isn't a human, he's some kind of feralized, mongrel creature beneath. Hairy, with large bat-like ears and a pig's snout, with sharp teeth and beady, dim-witted eyes. How strange, I could have sworn I saw regular humans beyond the gates.

It's especially unfortunate he's so adamant- because I actually do have a tattoo.

"Huh!?"
"Come now- as I explained, I am not from around here. I assure you, it will not match any "gang" tattoos in your recollection."
"It isn't but... why you have!?"
"It's mystic and arcane significance towards the advancement of knowledge would not be of any relevance towards you."

The guard looks it over- though I've certainly raised his suspicions, it is true that it's not like any of the ones he's seen. Surely he'll put together that I am not one of these "gang" members he speaks of.

But the question is; what is the reaction to my tattoo?

The guard looks over my tattoo, but above all else, seems confused.

”What's that?!”
“As I've explained. It has nothing to do with your “gangs”, it is a mystic tattoo. The significance will be lost on you.”
”...Well, alright, doesn't look like any gang stuff I've seen. But I'm watching you!” He squints. Then, lets you pass into the city.

Well, glad that's over! Taking my things, I manage to continue on and finally enter the City of the Red Walls, just with the knowledge I'm probably on thin ice. The guard was a bit of an oddity, sure, but thinking he was a one-off, a miscreation or unfortunate sod, I look around the city to see it is far from the truth.

Within the city, I now understand the social order here. The city is ruled not by the men, like it is in most parts, but instead by the women. The women here are also extremely beautiful- long and fair hair, shapely bosoms, and adorned in jewels and gold. They seem to have some power over the spiritual and magical beliefs of these people. But then, look over the men! They are beastly, the same as the guard at the gates! These beings, only partially human, are treated as little more then livestock- dressed in rags and beaten when they do not obey- and they always obey. Despite being tall and strong, the women here treat these men-things like dogs, only valued for their strength and unquestioning obedience. What a queer society. I've have never seen anything like it! I feel quite a bit of pity towards the menfolk here, being a man myself, though I am nothing like these unwashed, unshaven half-animal men that skulk around the red clay alleyways.

Rolled 18 (1d20)

^This roll is for being Sneaky^

I hurriedly take down my notes. The city's basic layout and social structure are quickly written down and sectioned away, my sketches of its skyline filling in the back of my pack. I fully intend to gather everything that I can; I must fill out the research papers and give as full and accurate of a report I can for the Wick-Key. After all, the truth is a constant process. While not exactly hostile, the people here are seeming to choose to ignore me- which is all the better. I'm used to that treatment, and it helps the impartiality I am required to uphold for my office.

As I creep through the city, I rub the brickwork and take samples of the dusty red clay that falls off, stashing them away in my pack. But as I move through the seedy alley between the buildings, I hear whispering. Could this be one of the gangs the guard spoke of? Or could it be something else? I creep closely, hoping to not be detected.

Hey guys. So for some reason I just really don't feel any desire to continue this quest anymore. I know it was a bit of an experiment and I really wanted to see how it goes, normally I tough stuff like this out for a bit longer, but I just don't feel like it's different or interesting enough to continue running it. It's a shame too because I really wanted to try the collaborative QMing type of Quest, but maybe I just don't find your plot concept interesting enough to be the "player" in to be honest. I'm not sure why, I just know I'm not going to enjoy this one any longer and am going to bail out early. Sorry.

I was thinking of the Wikipedia thing as the jumping off point for my character as a Scholar with the main quest being something fitting like uncovering a conspiracy or investigating a secret, but the players would have to choose that, making it harder to have overarching themes work.

I also did a poor job of expressing the idea of myself being the player-character early on. (I also couldn't stop writing "You" instead of "Me" when describing scenes so i had to edit every post like 3 times.) I had a sort of pseudo-mechanical character creation idea where I was picking my characters skills, class, and/or race based on the players choices. So if it had been more combat or exploration heavy quest goal, I would have gone with a more combat focused character with my bonus to rolls being based on strength or fighting. I knew I wanted to have 6 total stat points and let the players choose how my magic or fighting-style worked, but it just wasn't interesting once I started and I knew I wasn't going to enjoy it so I stopped. Maybe I'm suffering a bit of QM burnout?

In an extremely strange twist of fate, literally just a few hours after I ended this Quest prematurely, my computer started having serious issues and I do not have access to my drawing tablet anyway. it was a very strange coincidence that worked out, because I probably would be unable to update this Quest for at least a few days, if not longer. This is not a call to pity, by the way, I just thought it was an incredible coincidence my first flaked Quest was just before my computer I've used for every Quest I've run died. QM curse? Or divine punishment?

>>5789830
No offense but I certainly couldn't run a Quest like this at all without veto power. I'm not going to do monkey people again or "mammary matriarchary". I don't think I did a good enough job differentiating this from a normal quest or anything but I'm not going to run garbage just to make it "authentic".

Once again my apologies for this Quest. I still really want to try the concept again some time, especially using the Yes, AND system which I quite like for Solo RP and narrative focused games. This one just didn't grab me.
