There is only one truth to both love and war. Make the first move.

Whether you’re trying to get into a pretty lady’s panties or about to shove your blade into a man’s throat, always make the first move.

Never act second.

Your Father’s words chime inside your mind, and you don’t know why, but you feel like you should follow Hinato. If only to bring her back to the campfire safe and sound. You make your excuses to the family and get up to go after her. They wait until you’re out of earshot to burst into good natured giggles as the old man puffs on his pipe and says “Oh, to be young again…”

Following her tracks into the forest next to the campfire leads you into a winding path through low branches and high wind, your afro catching a few twigs along the way. Deeper and deeper you go into the woods, and after ten minutes of searching, the wind carries rough voices to your ears.

“Look what we got here, boys. A pretty girl. Are ya lost, girlie? Wanna play a… Game?”

Then you hear screams. Hinato’s voice ripping through the air. You rush off towards the sound, and finally you reach a clearing in the woods. Hinato, her kimono torn in places with a large man on top of her, trying to snatch a kiss from the young girl. Surrounding them are four grinning men, some with their cocks already out. Your blood curdles at the sight, and unconsciously, your hand falls to the hilt of your Father’s blade, it’s lucky coin jangling and clinking in the wind.

>With your new fangled revolving pistol, you’re able to shoot all five of the bastards without reloading. Time to see if all that hunting in the mountains paid off.

>Draw your sword and rush over to them. You can probably cut off the head of one of them and disembowel another before they even realize what’s happening. They’re too distracted with their “game”.

>Toss a rock at the skull of the one on top of Hinato, yell some slurs at them and then hide and wait for them to come. It’ll be easiest just to pick them off one by one while they search the woods for you.

Without hesitation, your arm moves of it’s own accord. Your revolver flashes out from the back of your hakama, it’s copper barrel glinting in the moonlight. Your thumb cocks the hammer back as you take aim. Just as you exhale, you pull the trigger.

CRACK!

For a second you’re surprised by the different sound the revolver makes compared to the tanegashima, a dryer sound reports from the pistol, like twigs snapping. Or bones breaking. Then you make that sound appear again and again, the clearing lit up by short bursts of light. One by one the men fall, first the one on top of Hinato, her face splattered with the blood and brains of her attempted rapist which only causes her to scream louder. It’s been a long time since you’ve fought men, but nine months of hunting with Hinata’s rifle has sharpened your aim all the same. You score headshot after headshot, and in ten seconds, all the men lay dead.

The first one you shot is still on top of Hinato, and she’s still screaming. Walking over to her, you struggle a bit to pull the corpse off of her. Even with the dead man off of her, she still screams, her eyes wide and wild. This is… Bad.

You squat down a few feet from her. You look at her as she screams and screams, blood all over her face and soaking her torn kimono red. It strikes you in this moment just how beautiful she is. Then the moment passes and you’re just in another killing field, the bodies strewn around you while a poor girl screams her head off. You don’t say anything, nor do you make a move to try and comfort her. That would just make it worse. So you wait, and before long she runs out of screams. Then there’s just the tears. Now you ask her.

“Are you okay? Did they hurt you?” Through tears she sniffles out “N-no… They… They didn’t hurt me.” You stand up and offer her your hand as you say “Then come on. Your family’s waiting for you.”

Wordlessly she takes your hand, and you pull her up off the ground. Then you guide her through the woods. Halfway to the camp you run into the father, the mother and the older sister, all wielding weapons. They must have heard the screams and gunshots and came running. “Hinato!” Shouts the mother as she runs over to the traumatized girl. “Oh, what happened to you?” She says as she wraps her bloody daughter into a fierce hug. “T-t-there were... Men. T-they… Rokutaro s-saved me.” Stutters Hinato, still in shock from everything that happened.

“You saved her?” Says the father, speaking for perhaps the first time since you met him nine months ago. “Yes sai.” You say, bowing your head a little to the man. You look up when you feel the mans hand on your shoulder, surprised. He then gets on his knees and bows deeply to you. Your cheeks turn red as he says “Thank you, warrior sai. Thank you so much.” The mother, with her arms still pulling Hinato into an embrace, says to you “Stay the night with us, Rokutaro. Eat our food. It’s the least we can do to repay you.”

You accept their offer, following them back to camp. The mood has definitely soured however, and everyone remains mostly silent as they finish up their meals. You however make sure to go for seconds, then triples of the delicious food on offer. For one, it has been a very long time since you’ve had a palatable meal. You did grow used to Hinata’s cooking after a while, but you never grew to like it. And secondly, you don’t know when you’ll be able to eat this good again. It’s a long way to Neo-Tokyo, after all.

Hinato barely touches her food. You can’t blame her. You want to say something to comfort her, to make her feel just a bit better, but nothing comes to mind. You can kill a man in a hundred different ways, but it seems you can’t think of a single thing to help Hinato. The grandfather elects to keep watch for the night, and as you lay down to bed the pungent scent of tobacco fills the air. You toss and turn in your sleep, dreaming of Hinato’s attackers. You cut and shoot and stab and punch and bite, but nothing you do can stop them from hurting her. When you awaken, the sun is just barely below the horizon, and the rest of the family is asleep. That is, except for the grandfather, who eyes you from underneath his bushy eyebrows.

>Leave the family and continue your journey west to Neo-Tokyo.

>Leave the family and continue your journey west to Neo-Tokyo, but leave some money for them. (You have 130 Nu-Yen)

>Wait for the family to wake up, and join them on their journey to Neo-Tokyo. You can’t help but wonder what would happen to them if you left them alone. And… You feel you owe them, somehow.

4 for leaving them all behind, 1 for traveling with them. Writing now.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4HWvsGs0rY

As you get up to leave, the old man says “Off to the road again, eh Rokutaro?” Turning to look at him, you say “Yeah.” The old man sighs, blowing out a great puff of smoke as he does so. “Traveling alone can often be a painful thing, sonny. Why don’t you stay with us for a while?” The thought did cross your mind, you admit to yourself, but you don’t want to trouble this family any more than you already have. It seems bad luck and bad men trail behind you like an evil wind. “No thanks, sai.” Is all you say.

You take a couple more steps down the path before the old man speaks up again, “One day, you’ll find someone that your heart will force you to stick with. I hope for your sake that they’re a good one.” Turning your head, you regard the old man for what may be the final time. “I hope so too.” You finally say, and then you leave them behind. Steadily and stolidly you tread down the path, and before long the camp and the family within it disappear around the next bend. Hopefully they can get to where they’re going safely.

Hopefully…

For the next few hours, you pass through the countryside without incident, the sun lackadaisically arcing overhead. You take a break as the dirt path morphs into asphalt, sitting cross legged on the road. The great city of Neo-Tokyo lies within eyesight, it’s metal skyscrapers shining in the light like a dazzling jewel. After a while of resting, your head dips down just a bit as you start to doze a litttle. Gracefully, almost tenderly, a knife is held to your throat. You feel a sting as the blade ever so slightly dips into your neck, just enough to draw a small bead of blood.

“I’ve never liked killing kids,” A silky masculine voice speaks up behind you, “So I’ll give you a choice. Give me the headbands and your head can remain attached to your neck.”

All at once your senses fire up just as an emotionless coldness envelops your body.

With a blade to your throat, there’s not much you can do. However… You’ll just have to bet it all on being able to shoot him when he relaxes his guard. “Fine.” You hiss through gritted teeth. “Take them.”

“Good boy.” Says the voice behind you, and you feel his hand undo the 99th headband from your forehead, unceremoniously ripping it off of you. With the blade still held to you, he then reaches for the 100th tied around your bicep. You just have to grit your teeth and bear it. Your moment will come soon…

“You’re gonna go for the pistol, aren’t you?”

Your blood runs cold. He saw through your plan! “Can’t say I blame you.” Says the man, the blade digging a little deeper into your neck. “Still, we can’t have that now, can we?”

“Nighty night.”

With blinding quickness, the tanto is removed from your throat, and you have just enough time to turn your head to see the hilt of it rocketing towards your forehead. Then it connects, and your vision goes all swimmy. You envision yourself getting up and shooting the bastard, but you pass out before you can even raise up by one leg. The last thing you see before slipping into unconsciousness is the mans sneering face, chiseled and slightly effeminate with a snake tattoo on his cheek that reaches down to his neck.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………

You awaken swaddled in thick blankets and surrounded by blurry figures, your head a torrent of pain. Then, a familiar voice: “Rokutaro, you’re finally awake!”

Hinato’s voice.

>>5926843
While your months spent living with Hinata may have softened you up a little from the feral kid you were at the start of the quest, it's tough to say whether that played into it. Perhaps more so that your repeated victories against low level opponents lowered your guard just enough. Staying in a group would have probably prevented this from happening, yeah, or at least made it harder for him to sneak up on you.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiLLVKE6d20

You struggle to spit out the words, the exploding pain in your head going off in neatly timed intervals like orchestra cannons. “My weapons…” You rasp, your confident question getting choked halfway up your throat. The fuzzy figure in front of you comes somewhat into focus as it leans in closer, Hinato’s voice saying “Huh?” Your hand whips out unconciously, grabbing Hinato’s wrist and pulling her in closer. You squeeze just a bit too hard as you hiss “My weapons…! Where are they?!”

“Ow!” shouts the young girl as she yanks her hand back. “T-they’re here, in your room!” You lean back into your tatami a bit, relaxing a little. At least you still have your weapons. Then it strikes you: You just hurt Hinato. Unintentionally, but… “I… Sorry, I didn’t mean to grab you like that.” You try. “It’s okay.” She says, still rubbing her wrist. “Where am I?” You ask, finally taking a look at your surroundings. A small room, sparsely furnished except for a dresser and a single lightbulb hanging from the wooden ceiling. “You’re in the Dragon Egg Inn. We found you lying in the road. I… I thought you were dead, at first. What happened to you?”

“I got jumped.” Is all you say.

“Oh…” Hinato says. You then try getting up, and once you find that you have no difficulty doing so, you walk over to your weapons, your head radiating flashes of intense pain every couple of seconds as you do so. Your Father’s sword, leaning against the wall. And your new pistol, laying on a bit of cloth on top of the dresser. Next to it is your komuso. For all the good it did you. Once you’ve slid your Father’s sword into your belt loop and tucked your revolver into the back of your hakama pants, you decide on a course of action.

Going out right now, with a pounding head, scattered thoughts and in the middle of the night, would be a mistake. First, you ask Hinato if they saw anyone, anyone at all, that was suspicious on the road. “No… No, we didn’t see anyone. Until we ran into you again, that is.” Frustrated, you politely (although somewhat awkwardly) shoo Hinato out of your room and then hunker down for the night. Positioning the tatami so that it would cushion your back against the wall, after a while you fall asleep.

You wake up just before the crack of dawn, as always. While you wait for the innkeeps to wake up and start on breakfast, you think about how best to get started on tracking down your headband thief.

>Go back to where that bastard jumped you and search for any tracks or identifying marks.

You get up off your makeshift bed, feeling your joints easing back into action. The blurred vision is gone, but the headache is still going on strong. At least you can think clearly now. You get a move on while it’s still dark out, the morning sun suspended behind the mountains to the east. The same mountains you spent nine months on. The place you could have once called home. Shaking your head free of such sentimentality, it only takes you around thirty minutes back down the road to reach familiar surroundings.

Right where the dirt path turns to asphalt, you find your ambush site. Now it’s time to put those tracking skills you spent so much time sharpening to the test.

Tracking a man is a bit different than tracking game, but the principles are the same. First, you go to exactly where you were ambushed. The asphalt makes it trickier, but there are slight mud marks on the road that share the same impression of your sandals. That’s where you were dozing. Picking out the thief’s tracks from the mess of tire marks and smattering of what could be dozens of different travelers is a bit more difficult, but eventually you find one that sticks out. Single line impressions in the dirt path, single line mud tracks.

This particular walker was wearing single teeth geta sandals. Most people don’t wear them because of how difficult they are to maintain balance on, but they are fantastic for forcing you into a good sword stance at all times, and they lack the distinctive click-clack of sandals, making them excellent for anyone who wants to be stealthy. While you can’t be sure, you think this is your man. You follow the tracks down the road a ways, matching them as they eventually veer off road. This close to Neo-Tokyo, all the woods have mostly been cut down, so you don’t have to worry about catching twigs in your afro as you walk.

The tracks end suddenly in the middle of a field. It’s strange, because there’s nowhere for them to have disappeared to… That is, until you notice a square indentation in the grass at your feet. A… Trap door? Leaning down to the ground, you place your head against that square of grass. Listening for any kind of sound, you focus your mind. Eventually, you can make out a low hum coming from beneath the earth. Strange…

>Open the trap door and enter the hideyhole.

You make off a ways back from the trap door, hiding inside a choice patch of rather tall weeds. Just to make sure you’re certain not to be spotted, you cover yourself in tufts of grass that you pick off from the patch.

An hour passes with no activity. The sun has finally peaked above the horizon, bathing the field in the firey glow of the rising sun.

Another hour passes and nothing happens yet again. You shift around in your position to look around your surroundings, making sure that you’re not about to be ambushed again, but the coast is totally clear.

By the third hour, you watch with amusement as a family of deer clip clop through the field, one of them actually walking over the grass covered trap door. Although your rumbling stomach is beginning to annoy you.

You’re beginning to think that at least no one is coming, and chances are no one’s home either. You remain on guard all the same. Better to be prepared for anything than get caught unawares again. Still… You’re growing tired of the waiting. Maybe you should just go ahead and hop down the trap door and see if there’s anything you can find, even though you doubt the thief is actually inside his bunker right now.

>Fuck it. Go and enter the bunker.

>Keep waiting. Something will have to happen eventually, you’re sure of it.

>Head back to the inn and get lunch. While you’re there you can ask around if anyone has heard anything about your thief. After all, nothing’s stopping from coming back here again.

After hours of waiting, you’re beginning to think that no one’s there. Or if they are, they’re not coming out any time soon. So you decide to head back to that square indentation in the grass and take a looksy for yourself. If you’re lucky the thieving bastard is asleep in his bunker and will be easy prey. And if it’s empty, you could find some info that could lead you to the prick. Walking up to the trap door, you give it a glance over for any handle or latch to grab on to, and when you see none, you take your Father’s sword and wedge it into the crack between the trap door and the dirt.

After a bit of force, the trap door pops open just enough for you to slip your fingers inside, gripping it and pulling it aside. Under the trap door is a hole with a ladder leading down into a surprisingly well lit tunnel, halogen lights buzzing all the way down. You wait a moment at the top, your ears pricked and listening for the slightest sound. Hearing nothing other than the buzz buzz of the lights, you climb down the ladder. If you were expecting a vast underground complex with winding halls leading gods know where, then you in for a disappointment. The ladder leads to just one small room, with a bed, a chest, a rack on the wall full of daggers of all shapes and makes, a desk covered in vials full of liquids of various colors and little else.

On the almost utterly bare wall in front of the ladder is something that is of some real use: A wanted poster with your thief’s face on it. Turns out the man who stole your headbands is an assassin of some kind by the name of Akashi, with a sizable bounty on his head. The portrait on the wanted poster is a damn near perfect likeness, that same sneering grin, that same snake tattoo that winds from his left cheek down to his chest. 5000 Nu-Yen to anyone who brings him in dead or alive, huh? You rip the poster off the wall and stuff it into your pocket, it could come in handy. Now it’s time to see if there’s anything in this small bunker that could help lead you to the fucker.

>Roll 3 1d100 to see if you can find any useful information on where to find Akashi.

You search the room up and down. Nothing under the bed, and you’re wary to touch any of the vials. Probably poisons of some kind. Finally you check out the chest, which unfortunately has a lock on it. You could shoot the lock off, but shooting your pistol in such an enclosed space could do some serious damage to your ears. Still, needs must, so you pull out your copper plated revolver and rip off thick wads of blanket from the bed and stuff them in your ears before taking aim at the lock. Praying to any God listening that you’re not about to deafen yourself, you pull the trigger.

CRACK!

The lock flies off the chest with a great snap sound, not that you could make it out over the intense ringing in your ears. If you didn’t have the forethought to plug your ears beforehand, you’d probably be deaf. Opening the chest, you find three unexpected things:

The first, a notebook with most of the pages ripped out. The only remaining page has just one sentence jotted down in a noble, elegant script: Number 89, Noriko Katsumi, is currently in a whorehouse in the Ling district of Neo-Tokyo. This complicates things, because that particular whorehouse is under the guard of the Kyshina Clan, the yakuza that rule over that particular district. Gotta be careful about how I go about taking Mr. Katsumi out… Last thing I need is a yakuza family after my head on top of everything else.

The second, a picture of a beautiful young woman. On the back of the picture are the words Remember our promise.

And the third, a large block of white powder wrapped in plastic. Drugs, most likely. Either Akashi is an addict or he’s holding onto this stuff to sell later.

Well, at least now you know where he’s most likely headed. Seems your thief is the ambitious type, deciding to jump ten ranks in one go with Mr. 89. Now all that’s left is to decide if there’s anything in here worth taking.

>Take the poison vials. While you have no idea what the effects of each vial would be, you’re certain they’re all deadly in their own way. And having an extra edge in battle never hurts.

>Replace your dragon printed tanto with one of the daggers on the wall. There’s a dark steel one that’s caught your eye in particular. Dark steel is extremely rare and inherently poisonous, and each cut with a dark steel blade weakens the opponent more and more.

>Take the picture of the pretty young lady. You’re not sure, but you feel it may come in handy.

>Take the drugs. When you get to Neo-Tokyo you could probably find somebody to sell it to, and it can’t hurt to supplement your income a bit.
>>

We can use the drugs as an 'in' with the Yakuza, maybe? Schedule a meeting to discuss providing them with product, but really sue it to get close to Mr. 89? We can't strike without a headband, but we know Akashi's coming for him and carrying OUR #100, so we can challenge one then the other, retake three headbands in one fell swoop.

Letting out a low whistle, you reverently take the dark steel dagger off the wall rack. Pulling it out of it’s sheathe, you take a look at it, careful to keep your fingers away from the edge of the blade. It’s a wicked looking thing, it’s blade twisted cruelly into something like a spiral. Loved by assassins for it’s poisonous effect, but only able to be acquired by the especially wealthy ones, what you’re holding in your hand is a thing of terrible, lethal beauty.

Next you take the vials. There’s a dozen total on the desk, each a different color with presumably a different but deadly effect. The thought had crossed your mind months ago after your duel with the mountain tiger to use the painkillers the village doctor had given you to poison your Father’s blade, and now you have something much better than mere painkillers. A cruel smile appears unbidden on your lips as you bundle the vials together with a piece of string, wrap it tightly in more ripped bed cloth and stuff it into your pocket.

Finally there’s the drugs. You’re not even sure what kind of drug it’s supposed to be, although you are at least certain that it is drugs. Perhaps you can sell it when you get to Neo-Tokyo. Or, a crazy thought whispers in your mind, you can use the drugs yourself in a pinch to give yourself an extra edge in battle. Looking at the picture of the achingly beautiful woman one final time, you decide to leave it behind. You wonder what Remember our promise written on the back was about, but it’s no matter. You don’t give a shit about your thief’s personal history.

Climbing out of the bunker, you take a deep breath of the fresh summer air, the hot sun arcing high overhead.

>Get started on traveling straight to Neo-Tokyo. No time to lose, either Akashi kills his target and becomes that much harder to track down, or he gets killed and the odds of you ever finding the 100th headband again go up in smoke.

>Head back to the Inn and go see the family. You never properly thanked them for saving you when you were unconscious and paying for your room in that Inn. You feel as though you should get that done first before you start your hunt proper.

You consider heading back to the Inn to properly give thanks to the family. After all, they saved you from who know’s what sick bastard might have found your unconscious body and paid for a room at the inn on top of that. But no, unfortunately you gotta get started on your hunt for Akashi as soon as possible. Every moment, every second counts in this game, and you can’t afford to waste any more time.

You follow the trail of tracks back to the asphalt road, and with your new air cushioned sandals the walk is a hell of a lot more comfortable than it would have been with your old busted ass sandals. After about thirty minutes, you come upon something rather unusual. A rough looking man standing on the side of the road, dressed in a leather jacket and jeans. Next to him is a red motorcycle, an older model by the look of it. Covered in stickers, the thing is damn near an antique. What makes this scene especially unusual is what the man is doing: In front of him is an easel with a half finished painting on it, the man occasionally swiping and brushing here and there after taking long looks at the mountains to the east. It seems to be a painting of the mountains, but instead of the natural greens and blue’s you’d expect, it’s a technicolor explosion of pastels.

The man doesn’t seem to notice you as you walk closer to him.

>Hold him up with your copper plated revolver and steal his bike. Sure, you don’t know how to ride a motorcycle, but how hard could it be? And with such a vehicle, you’ll zip to Neo-Tokyo a thousand times faster than you would just by walking.

>Offer to pay him to give you a ride to Neo-Tokyo. You’re not about to stoop to banditry. You’re not some thieving dog.

>Walk on past him. Something about this man smells like trouble. Best to just keep on going.

Something about this man makes your hair stand on end. He looks pretty innocuous, just another punk with a thing for painting. You can’t make out any weapons on him, and he still hasn’t even cast a glance at your way, but…

Your hand hovers at the grip of your blade unconsciously as you approach him. “Hey, sai.” You start, about fifteen feet away from him. The man doesn’t turn his head from his painting nor do his hands stop their beautiful work as he replies “Hey yourself, kid.” After applying a few more strokes to his canvas, he turns to face you. Your blood runs cold when you catch sight of it.

The 44th headband! The high collar of his leather jacket concealed it tied around his neck, the tattered cloth sports a few bullet holes as well as burnt edges. No wonder you felt on edge approaching this man, he’s almost certainly killed more men than you can count. Suddenly you feel as though you’ve entered into a life or death situation just by entering this man’s presence. You sense no killing intent from him, but-

“Hey, kid. You got something to say to me or are ya just gonna keep on staring?”

He’s returned back to his painting by the time you work up the nerve to ask “Can you give me a ride to Neo-Tokyo, sai? I’ll pay you.”

“Pay me? Keep your money, kiddo. How about this: I’ll ask you a question, and if you answer correctly, I’ll give you a ride to Neo-Tokyo, free of charge.”

“...And if I answer wrong?” You ask, hesitant.

“I’ll beat you to death with my bare hands.”

Your heart skips a beat, as all at once the mans demeanor shifts, his entire posture perfectly set to dash over to you in two bounds and make good on that promise. Now you sense the killing intent, and it’s overwhelming. The sound drains out of the field around you, as an icy coldness envelops you. “F-fine.” You say, “What’s the question?”

“How does a man die? What kills him?”

Alright, losing the will to live is the way a man dies. Just like Father said. Writing now.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7Cn6AOQKJ4

You gulp. You’re certain that this man could make good on his threat. Never before, except maybe when you fought the tiger, have you felt such an intimidating presence. And he’s not even that highly ranked. Is this the power of the upper tiers of headband owners? What of the number 2? And the number 1…

And then, resounding in your mind like the crack of a pistol comes your Father’s words.

A man doesn’t die when he’s shot. He doesn’t die when he’s stabbed, or poisoned. He dies when he loses the will to live. Always remember that, boy.

Your Father was right, of course. Drunken bastard though he may have been, he had a certain kind of wisdom when it came to certain things. And so without hesitation you answer Mr. 44.

“When he loses the will to live. When he loses the will to grow, and change. When he stagnates, rotting before his heart even stops.”

The man regards you for a long moment. His eyes are inscrutable, his face unreadable. Are you about to meet your end because you couldn’t somehow provide the right answer? Then the silence is broken, as the man laughs uproariously. “AHAHAHAHAHAHA! The look on your face kid, oh I got you good! You were actually afraid I was gonna kill you, hah!”

You stand there, dumbfounded and stunned. He was just… Fucking with you…? You weren’t ever in any danger?! Then suddenly, the man stops laughing. “Still… That’s a good answer, kid. Real good answer. You’re no stranger to death, I’m guessing. I’d say you earned that ride of yours. Just let me finish my painting first.”

“The name’s Jack, by the way.”

Your hearts still pounding, even if he never actually was going to hurt you. You want to be angry that he was just messing with you, but you can’t muster the rage. That was… Terrifying. Keeping a certain distance from the man, you wait for both your heart to settle and for him to finish painting. And as you wait, you consider your Father’s words. The will to live, huh…?

MAD DOG JACK

TOP SECRET

KAMAGIJUTSU CORP INTELLIGENCE REPORT ON THREAT LEVEL GAMMA SUBJECT: JACK ANTOLINNI AKA MAD DOG JACK

Subject was sighted entering Neo Tokyo, as of the writing of this report, exactly Two (2) weeks ago. Subject was sighted visiting the Blush soapland at least Three (3) times during the first two days of his stay in Neo-Tokyo. Subject was sighted getting into an altercation with local yakuza family Kyorei-gumi, in the Aikino district at The Stray Sheep Bar during his Third (3rd) day in Neo-Tokyo. Local security forces were alerted of the altercation, but upon learning that it was the subject in the middle of the altercation, the security forces refused to appear. Altercation ended with the death of Fifteen (15) members of said yakuza family, and the hospitalization and maiming of Thirty Four (34) more.

On the next day subject was spotted entering the headquarters of the Kyorei-gumi. Thirty Two (32) minutes later, subject was seen exiting the building. Upon inspection, every member of the Kyorei-gumi inside the building was found deceased, totaling to a number of Sixty Seven (67) casualties. The Kyorei-gumi were well known human traffickers, and it is suspected that this was the main reason for the subjects destruction of the yakuza family. For the next Nine (9) days, subject was not sighted by our agents. It is this agents suspicion that the subject became aware of our tracking him.

On the Fourteenth (14th) day, subject was spotted leaving Neo-Tokyo, seemingly possessing only an Ryitsujin-35 Model Motorcycle, an easel, a canvas and painting supplies. The reasons for subject entering Neo-Tokyo are unknown at this time, but it is this agents suspicion that he is seeking to duel the Thirty Ninth (39th) headband owner, Threat Level Beta subject Black Kaiser (no other aliases known).

Several hours after leaving Neo-Tokyo, subject was sighted conversing with a young boy. Connection between the two are currently unknown, and as of the writing of this report, both are currently on route back to Neo-Toyko.

END OF REPORT

SUGGESTED ACTION FOR SUBJECT: AVOIDANCE AT ALL COSTS.

ROKUTARO

It only took Jack another hour to finish his painting, although you remained on guard the entire time, your hand always hovering near the hilt of your Father’s blade. Your instincts forced you to, despite yourself. The legend that headband owners are always fated to meet seems to be true. Jack tries to strike up a conversation, but you just aren’t in the mood for it. Not that you’re much of a talker to begin with. Finally, Jack finishes his painting, and after showing after he shows it to you, you must admit that it is rather beautiful, if a bit odd. The mountains you spent nine months of your life on are ablaze in a wash of color in the picture, pinks clashing with blues clashing with reds and purples.

“Ya know, these actually go for quite a lot.” Jack says. Of this, you’re not surprised. You can think of a million rich assholes who would love to possess a painting by a headband owner, especially one of such high rank as Jack. After he straps it to the side of his motorcycle, he says “Welp, lets head off kiddo.” You ride in the back of the motorcycle, your arms wrapped around Jack’s side despite yourself. You’ve never moved this fast in your life. The countryside zips by, and you watch with no small amount of wonder as gradually it shifts from a few country side houses, green grass and wide plains to brick work buildings that stretch high above and claustrophobically flank you on both sides.

Eventually Jack comes to a stop in a rather shitty looking neighborhood. “Alright kiddo, this is where we part. Good luck on whatever the hell it is you’re doing in this shithole of a city. See ya!” And then he’s gone, his motorcycle flying around the corner of a building before you can blink five times. Alright. You’ve finally made it to Neo-Tokyo. Now it’s time to figure out just how the hell you’re gonna track down Akashi.

>Just start walking. Get a feel for the city. Sure, you don’t know where the hell you’re going or where the Ling district even is, but you’ll figure it out. You always do.

>Ask around for directions. Most of the people in this neighborhood look like they’d shank you for a single Nu-Yen, but needs must.

You cast a glance around. This place really is a shithole, barely above a slum. You take your coinpurse and shove it down the front of your hakama pants. Gang bangers, dealers and druggies loiter on every corner. Some boom-bap rap emanates from a ghetto blaster over the shoulder of a man with more gold around his neck and fingers than probably within his pockets. Keeping a hand on your Father’s sword, you start exploring. Most pay you little mind, and you think your Father’s blade and the copper plated revolver tucked into the back of your pants wards off most would be muggers and thieves.

You walk for maybe ten minutes, already wishing you were back in the wilderness. At least there a man lived on his balls and his skills. Here is a place that is truly wretched. You sneer at a bum who holds out a cup with a handful of Nu-Yen jangling in it towards you. Rounding a corner, you finally come upon a likely spot for filling your belly: A little hole in the wall with a neon pig sign hanging above the entrance, the words PIGGLY WIGGLY shining in neon next to it. Through the windows you can make out several people sitting, eating and talking.

It’ll do.

You pass a man puffing on a strange smelling smoke as you walk through the front door, your nose twitching at the scent. Then the heady odor of that man’s smoke is replaced with the more familiar scent of smoked meat. Your stomach rumbles. For a moment everyone turns their head to look at you, and your hand tightens it’s grip on your Father’s blade. Then the moment passes and it’s like you’re not even there. Walking up to the counter, you squeeze the plastic pink pig with the words SQUEEZE ME written on it in black marker. A few moments later and large black man with long dreads comes out from the back. “What can I do for ya, son?”

You’ve got some money to spend. Looking at the menu on the wall behind him, you think for a moment about what to get.

You order a rack of ribs, some fries and some pop. Treat yourself, why not. After nine months of Hinata’s cooking, you think you may have forgotten what good food is. The man gives you a ticket with a number on it and tells you it’ll be about 15 minutes. Winding through the small crowd inside the restaurant, you take a seat at the booth next to the window, and with your back to the wall, you watch the world roll on by. For some reason, you think you’re looking forward to the pop more than anything else. When was the last time you had real soda pop? Three years ago? No… Four. That night.

That night your Father died.

You were just seven years old then, and he still hadn’t quite beat the kid out of you yet. Sure, he had taught you all he knew. A handful of techniques, how to end a man’s life in two dozen different ways. How to survive, above all else. And of course, the attitude. Even now, your Father’s words on attitude ring through your mind, and it brings a small smile to your face.

“What are you, crying? Listen up brat, ‘cuz I’m only gonna tell ya this once. Don’t you ever feel that the world has been unfair to you. In this world, men deserve what they get. Even you, brat. Even me. Next time you feel like crying, then get the FUCK out of here and don’t ever dare show me your face again!”

You were three when he gave you this pep talk. And to be honest, it was probably the most important thing he ever taught you. You’re not sure how many times those words saved you from just… Letting go. Giving up. Crawling under a porch, curling up and waiting for death to take you. You hear your number get called, shocking you out of your reverie.

When you’re back at your table and feasting on the delicious meal, you marvel at the taste of the soda pop. Is this… Real sugar? You shake your head at your earlier sentimentality. If he had been hearing how you were thinking just now, you know exactly what he would’ve done. Cuffed you over the back of the head and apply another of his sage life lessons. But as you eat, you still can’t keep your mind from drifting back to that night.

Your Father…

>…Your Father, drunk as a skunk. As usual. A handful of new faces at the dive bar. Ugly faces. Sneering faces. A pretty girl. The rest is history.

>After your Father was killed, you had to fight off the men yourself. You killed them all. A grin with too much teeth by half appears unbidden on your face as you think about it again.

>A few hours later, the town showed up to your Father’s dojo. They were sick of the bullshit. The dueling. The drunken harassment. The trouble that seemed to crop up at any place he set foot in. There was another fire. And then you, screaming off into the night with just your clothes, and your Father’s blade.
