dear /tg/, I present to you a world for your consumption.

This is a world of layers; of plateau-like islands that peak out of shroud of heavy, otherworldly fog. This "miasma" is what separates the world, you are either above it, free from its strangling grasp and able to bask in the glory of the sun or you are below it, illuminated only by the strange things that grow within its domain and the bolts of arcane lightning that strike without warning.

There are no oceans here, but water is by no means in short supply. Many of these islands posses lakes and streams fed by underground springs and other such sources, but more fascinating are the rivers suspended in air by the interactions of ley lines and the miasma itself providing civilization a vital conduit between the Bright World's islands without having to venture into the lower lands.

Next you'll be telling me there's a huge equatorial stream that drives global trade, and people ride inside hardened submarines that harness the particular currents that will take them to their destination a-la that scene in Finding Nemo and that's pretty awesome.

There could be whole communities built on this principle. Think of it: if you all fall at similar velocities, you're motionless relative to one another (obviously this requires streamlining large objects to match the speed of a falling person), and can glide between places by banking into the wind.

With a very large ribbon of cloth at the top to create drag to pull the top of the building upward.

From there you just make sure their terminal velocity is in the sweet spot for humans to be able to either slow down(by spreading the body out against the win) or speed('standing' or diving) up enough to get from one to the other.

The monks confine themselves to the monastery until they have achieved mastery over the four winds, and can slow themselves to a gentle stop on the nearest plateau. From there, they travel the world, using their powers to aid those who need them and teaching to others the ways of the Free Fallen.

But there was one... one who was not content with simply controlling his fall. He sought to fly upward, against the flow of All That Is, to become more than he was made to be...
