9 KB Doppleganger Damacy XI TempDM !!WBgKxxhAACV 05/29/10(Sat)15:11 No.10138220
The basic premise: You started out as a generic creature with no voice, no skills, feats, or special abilities whatsoever, and every stat at 10.
Whenever you eat a creature you acquire one of its traits. Permanently. For the purpose of this quest, that means I'll give you a short list to choose from.

Last night, shit went down. A group of adventurers whose path you've crossed before tracked you home, and made their move. Now, the building where you've been staying has been gutted by flame. Claire, the girl who saved you and took you in, is missing--presumably captured. Even your cat is gone.

You fled after coming close to death. Finding a temporary place to sleep, you healed most of your injury and took a new appearance. It's early morning now, and word will be spreading through the city of last night's events. Your sleep was plagued by terrible dreams, which fled from your grasp when you woke.

You don't know who they are, except by scent. But you know this: you will find them. You will kill them. You will eat them. And you will rescue Claire.

What is your plan of action?

You put your nose to work and hit the streets. Heading methodically to tavern after tavern, you stay peeled for a whiff of the four scents you smelled last night. You're met with dismal luck for a good while--all that soot from last night's fire must have mucked with your sense of smell. Or the sword-for-hires are keeping their heads down. You can't be sure.

Then, you hit a lead. Two of the scents from last night. They were at the tavern at least four hours ago, maybe more. There's just enough scent hitting your nose to confirm they were there, but it's proving difficult to do more than that.

    Action?

They're adventurers in a righteous fury in 3.5, they do what they want.

Well we're a hivemind doppleganger on a quest thread. Those SOB's don't stand a chance.

I say we make with the smalltalk and find out anything that might have been heard. Also potential winecellars/ secret routes to the sewers that the adventurers might have taken.

    >Everyone is still sleepy and won't like to raise head to look into the sun. We can simply keep our head low after the jump.
You can go ahead and jump around, but keep in mind that:
    1) People are bustling about and moving. Sleepytime is past.
    2) Tracking by scent is going to be very difficult at this point just by following the scent as closely as possible. Trying to track while leaping about, nowhere near to where your quarry passed (THEY weren't using the roofs), is going to prove nigh-impossible.

    >What is the difference between skill focus and skill feat? Like, skill focus: diplomacy / skill feat: diplomacy?
Skill focus feats each give you +3 to the listed skill.
The +2/+2 skill feats are a bunch of ones that give +2 to two different skills (say, Bluff and Intimidate, or Diplomacy and Sense Motive).
Skills also have ranks that can be gotten without feats (in fact, that's the default way to get them, the feats normally just give you a boost to some of a character's skills).

She made us promise not to kill more people. We went to the Cuthbert church and no one was there. We looked around it a bit but found nothing and left for the other church, where we found the Cuthbert cleric. He restored our Con and we scouted some information from him and the tavern, and found out that the adventurers (leader is named Soveliss) planned to make their move tonight. We hurried back to the apartment, Claire/Morsel were gone and there was obviously a scuffle (smelled of burnt hair). There was a paper left and we (stupidly) read it. Explosive Runes, left us at 2HP and threw us back at Claire's alchemy stuff, which caused a fire. We ran for it, broke into Borat's house, ate him for his appearance and a bunch of birds he was keeping in his house to restore our HP. We slept in his bed.

They should be still in that little squat building there, it's been abandoned for a bit but that just means free housing if you clear the rest out you know, so they did but I suspect they won't actually stick around long because they looked awful worried and word was that their job last night only might or might not have worked. But since you want more to know well you got Soveliss tellin' them all what to do they don't mind of course cause he's a decent sort even for an elf, not that you see many of them these days after the war unless you're going to the swamps. You head over via a different route to the building mentioned. It's shaping up to be a hot day outside. Not a cloud in sight, and even most of the birds are staying in the shade. Just a hawk wheeling overhead and a few sparrows darting about. The building itself is set a bit away from its neighbors, and is a squat brick single story. You might be able to still jump and glide on top of it from another building if you want. This is all visible while still a ways back before you're likely to be noticed from the house; you can get closer and see more detail if you'd like.

    Also...
    1) The party has access to magic. Maybe moreso than Beltboy. This has lead me to suggest that the soul-sucking magic user we discovered earlier may have decided to take us out before we can become a problem for him. It's a likely course of action to point us out to those who hold a grudge against us, pinning some of his victims onto us as well to avoid suspicion. If so, he's dangerous, as he is more ruthless, pro-active and cooridinated than we are. (side note: we don't know what those two high wizards look like... might be worth looking into)

    2) The Explosive Rune may have had two purposes. While the first is obvious (killing us), we seem to be missing the second: now they know that what they've been tracking is intelligent enough to read (hence not under direct control of Claire). Where before was speculation, now is certainty. Intelligent prey requires different tactics than animalistic predators. Since we left no body behind, they will expect retaliation now; my suggestion is to give them unexpected retaliation -- change our own modus operandi.

    3) By telling Claire what we are (to a limited extent), we may have eliminated her plausible deniability. Not only that, but if she's allowed to compare notes with the adventurers, she might discover that the dwarf was eaten AFTER meeting her (rather than our alleged stopping once we discovered sentience). This may not even be an issue though, if the first speculation holds true; Claire may well be the soul-sucking magic user's next victim.

Random question, does volunteering to sage posts delay the autosage?
Because if so, I'll just start posting all my responses in sage to keep auto at bay

    Guess we are charging
remember to inject some poison in his ass.
if we need to retreat from this encounter then lets have them carry around a bitchy mage who is even more bitchy because he is poisoned.
    >> Anonymous 05/29/10(Sat)18:04 No.10141019
Between charge and feces, I'd go with charge.

...we probably could've come up with a completely different strategy, though, right? But for some reason, it felt like an "only one of these two" choice.

    This is fucking stupid.
We can't take the guy on.
    He's prepared a spell.
    He's aware of us.
Just hide behind a corner and wait until his back is turned.
If people are seriously going with the fling feces route, do it, but still hide behind something.
