Dear /tg/ how do you go about building lego spaceships?

Start at the bottom? the middle bit? plan a general shape? free-form?

You want to try avoiding building from the bottom. If you get stuck in the mindset of building from the bottom, your creations will be limited because you won't think to build in lateral directions. Think in all three dimensions when building with Legos.

    Holy shit, Turanic Raider corvette/gun.

Holy fuck. I just can't believe I never thought of this before. Fuck Dwarven Forge; build an entire dungeon with Legos, use little Lego men as miniatures, and you can do it all for a fraction of the cost and trouble of using anything else.

Sadly, all the old lego stuff I actually own is psychadelic-colored and rather unsuitable. I'll have to find a GINORMO BOX-O-LEGO somewhere, hopefully at a discount.

They are the best dungeon crawl map making medium ever, bar none. The DM can quickly and cheaply create a fully detailed dungeon, the players can create their own mini-figures, and everything is completely modular and rebuild-able.

    My strategy (microscale):

Pick a piece or small combination to use as the hull. I've been using gears lately for a UFO shape, but anything with studs all the fuck over everywhere works fine.

    Engine & guns:
Decide which pieces look best to you. Some guys use levers for guns, some use minifig hands, some (me) like binoculars. Any stud with a transparent orange cone works good for an engine.

Then you're basically done. Play around some more.

Lego minifigures are roughly the correct size, yes. My buddy made an entire Space Marine army out of Legos, including ten Tactical Marines, 5 Assault Terminators, 5 Scouts, 5 Assault Marines, 2 Rhinos, 2 Land Raider Crusaders, and a pair of Land Speeders. The minifigs aren't exactly right, but they work well enough. They're a bit too tall, so leave off helmets and make your bases for them thin

It's limited in that you can only use pieces currently available for mail-order or in Creator sets.

As in, as soon as a set goes out of print they release a patch that removes the bricks in the set from the available selection.

    Retarded I know.

One of the problems I have in trying to come up with designs is that I lack many of the core pieces needed to make miniature ships. Cameras I have (although I'll have to dismantle my mini Y-Wing Fighters and mecha army), but the little squares with studs on every side but the bottom? I only have two, and I don't have any idea where either of them are. My lego collection is currently spread ankle-deep on the floor of my walk-in closet.

I actually never used the one I have for anything, other than the original set that is. Always preferred sound in my mind. But as the years went on, the wiring started failing and it would make sounds without anyone pressing the buttons. It would be 3 AM when a 12 y/o me was awoken by the engine going off in my closet. I was terrified of it after a few days of that. Something was controlling my legos! Eventually buried it under a mountain of other pieces, but not before removing the batteries...

GZG ships are a bit smallish.
Frigates and Destroyers are usually 1 - 1.5 inches long
    cruisers are about 2 - 2.5 inches
    battleships about 3 inches
and dreadnoughts are about 4 inches long.

I used to have a plastic model of this. It was yellow.

I had no idea what it was, I was like 8 at the time.

Like any creation, build parts and stick them together. You're not following instructions so you will reassemble significant parts of the ship halfway through.

Now that is something, a nearly perfect scale venator.

I once did some math, assuming 2 studs = 1 metre,
an Imperial Star Destroyer would be 3000-3050 studs long, or, about 10 feet, assuming 2 studs = 1 CM.

Full thrust guided missile frigate. Mass 20, thrust 4, 6 hull boxes, 4 heavy missiles, 47 CPV. Either the missiles look too big or the scale of the rest of the ship is off..
