You are Suzume Toranaga, the Fishing Sparrow. You are currently trying to prevent a war between the Lion and Scorpion from destroying your Clan's Lands.

Last week you fought and defeated a rogue spirit called Ezo Wolf, sealing it within an arrow. You have emerged from the forests of Kitsune Mori and are riding hard towards Kyuden Asahinabachi, the castle of the Wasp, hoping to get there before sundown. Up ahead on the road your companion Shinji of the Wasp has spotted two riders wearing the Lion Mon heading in your direction.

    What shall you do?

Hiding with three samurai equipped with horses is much less feasible than when we were alone and on foot. Accordingly, I think that we should continue riding towards our destination, and keep an eye on the Lions.

You are on the open road, so in all likelihood the Lions have seen you. They may not see the danger as of your group only one, Shinji, is wearing armor.

    >>10171263
They are likely scouts for the upcoming invasion that have slipped through one of the smaller passes in the mountains between your lands and Lion lands.

Currently the Lion are preparing to go to war with the Scorpion and plan on cutting through the lands of the Fox, Sparrow, and Wasp to attack the Scorpion from a more open position as opposed to going through the mountain passes that they are sure the Scorpion have heavily trapped.

Actually you are in Wasp Lands, but the situation applies as Shinji is of the Wasp Clan. As you get closer you can see that Shinji is somewhat annoyed to see the Lion in his clan's territory when war is about to break out.

As you speak up the Lion that put away the papers says, "My apologies, little Sparrow, our journey takes in the opposite direction and we have no time to waste on the chirping of little birds." With that they begin to maneuver their horses by when Shinji speaks up.

"Your traveling papers, please, Lion-san.," says Shinji as he holds out his badge marking him as an Emerald Magistrate. "If you do not have proper traveling papers, you will be required to report with me to Kyuden Asahinabachi, to explain yourselves to Lord Tsuruchi."

The Lion slaps down Shinji's Badge with the flat of his spear. "We do not have to take orders from a clan of rabble who can't even afford swords," says the second Lion as the badge falls into the dust in the road.

Shinji's face turns crimson with rage and you see Hikaru reaching into the sachel at her hip.

"Hah, these lands will belong to the Lion clan soon enough, and the Lion are the right hand of the Emperor's Law," sneers the Lion as swings his spear your way, narrowly missing you.

Hikaru draws a scroll from her sachel and begins chanting. The other Lion curses and tries to charge her, only to be cut off by Shinji.

You free your sword and prepare to strike, but you are unused to mounted combat. If you choose to stay on your horse, you must make a raise without any effects in order to keep your balance.

Your attack roll is 6d10, keeping the best three. If you roll a 10 the die explodes and you use the rightmost digit of your post for next die continuing left until you run out of 10s. Calling raises makes a harder by 5 but can generate greater effects such as targeting a location (2 limbs, 3 head) or dealing greater damage.

You leap from your horse and quickly subdue the barely mobile Lion. A quick inventory of their possessions turns up the following:

    2 Daisho
    2 Yari (Spears)
    2 Suits of Light Armor
    2 Riding Horses
    6 Koku (gold coins)
A map of the region marked with locations of possible invasion routes.

Simple Etiquette tells you that all but the Daisho are perfectly legal spoils of war. Though getting one of the suits of armor off would require you to become unclean by handling the dead. The proper way to handle the Daisho is with respect and to return them to the Clan of origin after the conflict is settled.

Though you do have a prisoner that you can have take care of that as well...

The armor will need to be resized to fit someone else. Something that can be done fairly quickly at almost any armory, though you'd probably want to remove all the Lion themed fittings and replace them with something more appropriate, again something that can be done fairly easily.

You strap the prisoner to his horse and sling his partner's body to the other horse. Your handling of dead flesh has reduced your honor to 0.0 until you can go to a shrine and purify yourself at which point it will be restored.

As you now have to lead two horses you are slowed down and will arrive at the Castle of the Wasp fairly late, Shinji estimates that you would arrive at around 11pm.

Do you wish to push on or make a camp for the night?

It's more dishonorable to fail due to being poorly equipped, or demanding funds from our host or lord when such is readily available. But then again, I am a Scorpion.

    >It's more dishonorable to fail due to being poorly equipped,
No, its not. Its FAR more dishonorable and spiritually unclean to take the belongings of the dead. On top of that its even more dishonorable to blame your failure on your lack of equipment.

    >or demanding funds from our host or lord when such is readily available.
No, its still not. The entire purpose of being able to ask your lord for funds is so that you are not improperly equipped, otherwise he is a poor lord. Also being reduced to looting corpses is insulting to your lord, since you're implying HE can't provide for you.

    >But then again, I am a Scorpion.
And a shitty one at that.

No, actually, there's a pretty damn big difference between killing someone in open combat (not a duel, but a battle) and removing useful items they won't be needing anymore and just looting any corpse you come across.

One of the Lion is just unconscious. His stuff is fair game.

As for the dead one, the only things we're taking are his spear (a generic weapon) and his money (generic cash). His personal belongings are either being cremated with his body or returned to his clan.

The founder of the Monkey Clan was a peasant who stole a dead samurai's swords.

Since Toku was a writer's pet character (I don't want to say Mary Sue, but...) he got rewarded with an entire fucking minor clan instead of just being executed on the spot.

Yeah, I don't know anything about the fluff, except if you actually read any L5R rulebook you'd see I'm right. They make it a point to say looting corpses is a big no-no, for pretty much all the exact reasons I stated.

Well, the prisoner's armor goes without saying.

The dead guy's armor, assuming it wasn't trashed by the blow that killed him, would be tricky to get off without more additional corpse-handling than I'm comfortable with.

Except that, as already stated and explained, this is different from buzzarding around and looting corpses. Also, if you have to use childish memes to make your argument, you're either a troll or underage b&. So, no, not mad, just finding you pathetic.
    >> Anonymous 05/31/10(Mon)03:38 No.10174042
    >>10173918
Actually, the real reason they make a point of it is so that L5R players don't fall into the trap of seeing enemies as walking bags of loot.

That's not a threat in this situation.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I believe your pancreas has a date with the point of a tanto, and I wouldn't want it to be late.

You push on through the night and arrive at Kyuden Asahinabachi shortly before the Hour of Togashi. On being recognized you are let in. You head straight for the and Hikaru oversees your purification, your honor is restored to 3.4. You lost 4 pips of honor for taking the Lion's possessions (1 pip) and for willfully handling the dead (3 pips).

Exhausted you take a quick bath and are shown to a room where you quickly fall asleep. The next morning you, Hikaru, and Shinji are called in to speak with Tsuruchi and Ryosei.

Tsuruchi and Ryosei are sitting before a large table with a map of the region laid out on it. On the map there are several blocks marked with unit designations. Most of them are Lion Orange.

Tsuruchi congratulates you on your capture of the Lion scouts and their plans. He also mentions that your daimyo has sent word that he is mobilizing the Sparrow forces and sending them to Kyuden Asahinabachi. They should be arriving in the next couple of days.

Knowing the routes the Lion are considering, Tsuruchi hopes to trick the Lion into thinking one of their routes in lightly guarded. By using the terrain, Fox magic, Wasp harassers, and Sparrow skirmishers he thinks that the three Minor Clans can give the Lion a bloody nose that will make them think twice about using them as a doormat.

When you mention this Tsuruchi shows you reports that several groups of scouts have been spotted. He believes he has figured out the pass they are taking but is waiting for a report from the men he sent to investigate. He takes this as the Lion expect a few not to return.
