165 KB Marching into hell Anonymous 06/15/10(Tue)00:43 No.10501437
    I'm playing a paladin in a kinda Egyptian-themed campaign.

When we started, all of the good gods had been slain and buried in dreamless sleep throughout the deserts of the world. This pretty much meant that everyone went to one of the lower planes when they died.

The party was made up of escaped slaves and disenfranchised nobles and soldiers. It took us a long time, but we finally managed to find the corpse of one of the good goddesses. We managed to revive her, and she's now this NGt undeadish mummy-like goddess of healing and the keeper of the gateway to the good planes for the newly dead.

That took a long time though, and during our struggles we lost one of our own.

She was an escaped slave, like my character. She was the free-spirited CG rogue to my stoic LG paladin. We grew really close, and we were planning on getting married and starting a family once this mess was finally over for us.

One session we got captured. The priests in power were going to sacrifice us one by one as an example to other potential rebels. We were going to be sacrificed in such a way that our souls would be branded as property and thralls of Hell or the Abyss, whichever would have us.

A lot of us tried to throw ourselves before our comrades, to sacrifice ourselves while giving the rest time to escape.

My fellow slave knocked me out, and took my place on the altar.

We escaped two days later, after losing her.

Half a year later, and we've made a lot of progress. Unjustly taken souls are even being wrested from hell and the abyss by what newly risen gods of good we've managed to find.

Unfortunately, those that were branded are still trapped in the lower planes.

We continued on with the campaign. My paladin had grown grim during this time, without his companion by his side and knowing where she was now.

Then we finally met her again.

A demon lord had taken note of us, and what we were doing. He had claimed our friend's soul, and crafted her into a slave just as she had been in life. She was now a marilith, eternally subservient to her new master and more than willing to butcher us all.

It's been traumatic every time she has faced us. We've either had to flee, were forced to kill her and send her back to the abyss, or had to watch as she tormented us with the sight of her doing horrible things to herself just to fuck with us. One time she forced me to hack her apart before she murdered a child she held hostage, just to get to me.

I"ve had it. I'm freeing her. I'm getting her back.

The DM hasn't said anything about any possible way to free a branded soul. We just know that it binds her to the demon lord.

I don't know if it's possible to free her or make her what she once was. But I have to try.

What can I do, /tg/? Love has to be able to find a way to overcome.

    >> Anonymous 06/15/10(Tue)00:55 No.10501641
The DM has been allowing her old player(who is now playing a spoiled exiled noble girl) to make will saves to exert a little bit of the marilith's old personality over her actions. Most of the time it doesn't work, but it has turned up some neat results here and there.

I think that gives us an avenue of opportunity, but I want to get this right. We don't want to lose her again.

Can that cut it on its own? Maybe it could break the brand, but she'd still be a marilith, right?

It is very rare that any soul turned into a demon or devil retains any memory of its former life, beyond an all-consuming hate for something that wronged it.

You are very lucky that your heart's desire holds onto some shred of her love for you.

Anyhow, sounds like you need to find the lost god or goddess of love and/or marriage and demand that you get your satisfaction.

    I'm thinking about it.

The few good gods we have so far are distant most of the time. They're still weak and can't come out of hiding on the upper planes very often without bringing a shitstorm down on their own heads, but the DM has made it clear that they're doing all they can.

The NG mummy-ish goddess is one of redemption as well. I hate to say they OWE us, but I'm hoping they can help us out here.

Just want to get everything right before running into the abyss. LG, planning, contingencies, you know.

Shit, if I have to I'll drag her out of the abyss and get her imprisoned in the NG afterlife and just try to redeem her after I finally die if it comes down to it.

Oh yeah, and afterward purify her soul with the blinding light of your own goodness. Once she has come back to her old self the two of you can rip a whole through the hells and transcend back to the material plane. For bonus points both of you should take the Living Saint (or whatever it is really called) prestige class from Exalted Deeds.

Your GM has done what all (good)GMs aspire to do: Create a setting so immersive that the players want things that are (ostensibly) outside of the scope of the game.

Stick to your guns. Save the girl, but never comprimise your morals. Love will conquer all, and your character will be the proof. It's all in the willpower (though I hear the dice play a hand too)

Can't talk for your DM, bor, but here's how I'D do it if I ran your game.

First, she's a demon now. You're gonna need a wish/miracle to reverse that, and it ain't happening while she's bound. This is a high-standard/low-epic deal, so don't plan on being able to DO it until 17+, but before then is a good time to build to it.

You're gonna need the cooperation of one of those resurrected gods of yours, possibly "bought" with a good arduous quest. Then, you go down to Hell, find big Mister Demon Lord, MURDER HIM BEYOND DEAD, as in, use holy artifact sword, given by Healing-Goddess for that quest you did her, to nail his head to a fucking altar. Then subdue your marilith lover, drag her kicking and screaming back to the land of the living, and drop a 5,000 XP, level-losing wishacle to bring her back.

    How's that sound?
    >> Anonymous 06/15/10(Tue)01:10 No.10501927
I hate to say it, but besides the emotional investment there's also the added appeal of possibly redeeming her without her losing her marilith form.

Because, you know, Egyptian paladin X Egyptian CG marilith. Think of the monuments.

There's evidence that the original personality is underneath all this 'loooool evil!' bullshit, so I'd offer a ritual similar to a Wishacle that doesn't seem to be 'I'm going to rape your mind and soul with Good until you're good again, DAMMIT'. That idea kinda bothers me, even if it IS Good (in the D&D sense).

And then you'll have to deal with the aftermath. Pict fucking related.

Once your allies are gathered, wage an ethereal war of pre-biblical proportions to free those still bound to . If Helena had the face that launched a thousand ships, your love for her will be the one that frees a billion souls.

    Find the demon lord
    Destroy him
No, don't 'kill him', don't just send him back to the eternal slumber that awaits all deities should they be "killed" - obliterate him. Leaving nothing left behind. Wipe away his very existence from the minds and memories of every sentient thing on the planet.

    >> Anonymous 06/15/10(Tue)01:27 No.10502221
What you really need to do is a bit of time-warping shenanigans, carefully arranged to avoid a major paradox.

You're going to need to reach back to the very moment that the Demon Lord turned her into a marilith and swap her marilith-soul with her human soul. Preferably, do this after you've somehow removed the control brand; for that purpose, I recommend killing the Demon Lord.

Of course, the most dickish way to deal with the Demon Lord possible (and yet an awesome one) would be to somehow trick him into putting on a Cursed [Whatever] of Alignment Inversion that's rated for beings of his power. Since you happen to have a Goddess of Redemption on your side, you should be able to get an item like that made. Once you've turned him to good, you can just ask him to free the souls he's kept in torment.

And doing this to a Demon Lord isn't as shady as doing it to a lesser being would be, because there's literally no chance at all of ever redeeming him by any other method.

    >The way the DM runs his games is that souls are completely indestructible, but there are still some terrible things that can be done to them. They can still be reduced to to vestiges and banished to the Outer Dark, for example.

Unacceptable. This deity had taken the soul of your love and twisted her like a puppet to taunt you, all while keeping her out of your reach.

    This will not stand.

Find a way to wipe him out, some ritual or ancient secret to permanently "slay" a deity. Make an example of him to any other deity that would dare to try this again on a mortal in love - whether they be from Heaven or Hell.

Alignment doesn't matter, states of mortality don't matter. No ancient laws of magic or physics or the universe or even the rules in the game book matter.

Deities may have the cosmic power, but humanity has the cosmic potential - and love will be the thing that unlocks it. Every being capable of sentience will know this fact the moment this deity...this monster...is wiped away from existence.

Need to break down a plan. Specifics are good.

    1) How are you going to get into the Lower Planes? Can you comfortably exist on them as a Lawful Good mortal? Will you need to bring your own food/water or can you subsist of what is there? How long can you stay there? Who are you bringing with you? A small adventure team? An army? An army backed up by good gods?

    2) How will you find your friend? What will you do when you do find her? Will you be capable of assaulting a Demon Lord's home on his home turf? Do you actually need to kill him or can you just distract him long enough for a snatch and grab? How will you break the Demon Lord's control of her? What do you do if you can't? Are you able/willing to kill her if it becomes necessary?

    3) Escape. How are you going to get out of the Demon Lord's keep/estate/cave/etc.? His region? The Abyss itself? Are you able to **quietly** transport what could be a very unwilling Marilith through the lower planes? Will you be able to leave the Abyss with your woman? What condition will she be in upon her rescue? Will rescuing her allow her to be brought back to life, or is this just a matter of "freeing her soul so she can go to a better place?"

You need to know everything you can because this is one of those missions where everything has to come off without a hitch. Also, think about the priority of your objectives and at what point you're willing to say "This isn't working" and cut your losses. Is this attempt worth your characters life? The life of your entire party? What effect would your deaths have on the cause of good within the campaign world?

Consider all of these questions, both in-character and out-of-character. Is your Lawful Good Paladin willing to risk the fate of the free world on getting back his love?
    >> Anonymous 06/15/10(Tue)01:39 No.10502386

    I shouldn't say this, but:

In the setting, bisexuality is no big deal. Relationship values have gotten fucked up a bit while the good gods were buried, but before that it wasn't considered unusual at all.

It's not unusual for rulers, nobles, anyone rich to keep a harem on the side even after marriage. The harem is often shared amongst some couples. This was also the standard before the good gods fell. The main thing that's changed since then is the general shittier treatment of the harem members.

This is pretty standard for the time period as I recall.

    Anyhow, here's what you do.

    1. Go on epic quest to find the Demon Lord's Truename. It probably exists somewhere, even if it's on a half-dissolved scroll in a chest on the bottom of the ocean. FIND IT.
    2. Revive as many gods as possible. This will help you get more allies, obviously, and you probably won't have to ask too much to go after the demon lord to get the branded souls back - the gods seem to want to do that anyways.
    3. MARCH INTO HELL.
    4. CLEAVE AND SMITE.
    5. WIZARD CASTS UNNAME.
    6. Apply Sanctified template to Marilith.
    7. Hot snake sex.

Bonus points if this song is playing at some point:

If it works as it does in vanilla DnD, you kill Deities simply by destroying them on their home plane. This is usually fucking difficult even for epic level characters though, since Deities tend to have even MORE power on their home plane than normal, and can shape it at will.
    >> Anonymous 06/15/10(Tue)02:59 No.10503555
have you tried destroying her corporeal body and trapping her soul with a spell? once you've objectively got her soul itself, you can take it to the good goddess and work that deific mojo at their leisure. I'm sure the whole redemption thing is a lot easier on her home field.

Of course if that's not an option, you should try outsourcing the work.

your lover is imprisoned by a demon. you can work with that. there's only one thing beings of primordial evil hate more than do-gooders like you, and its each other.

find yourself a devil. It shouldnt be hard, since the bad guys are running this shop.

its an easy deal. you tell them, 'look. I'm going to go fuck up a ton of demon shit. this already benefits you. All I want is one soul. you get me that soul, and I can make it really easy for you to fuck up a ton of demonic shit, this is already gonna happen, lets put it in writing."

Naturally, there's your paladin instinct. Maybe you'll fall for this.

You know what I think though? You won't. You're Number One with a Bullet on the good guy list. There aren't enough good guys going around the upper planes for them to be too picky about where they're sending the holy power, and if they can't pull a Jesus on one lost lover's soul, then maybe you should lay the law down right there.

Go grey guard. get in the murky section of the alignment spectrum, and turn evil on evil. its pretty obvious that the good guys aren't going to deliver any time soon, and that demon lord has the better part of eternity to make your girlfriend fuck herself with pinecones.

    So steal his mantle.

Defeat him in combat and absorb his strength. Cast him down, and all his evil, all his blasphemy, all his power, make it yours. And as the vile energies course through you, with all the effort in your soul, free her.

You probably won't survive untainted. Not with that level of depravity within you. But with her free, she can become your lifeline back to normality, a saving grace who will atone you.

Raped with a swarm of snakes while she was being recrafted into a marilith.
Torn to pieces repeatedly, violated, then reconstructed.
Forced to eat the eternally reconstituting flesh of her dead parents as they begged her to stop.
Being so broken that she no longer had to be forced to keep eating.
Made to bath in a river of broken glass made from molten desert sand.
Raped repeatedly by succubi and incubi until she managed to turn the tables and start raping them in turn.

It wasn't broadcast to the other players but that is now what definitely happened to her. Out of the entire group I"m the only one that knows about any of it in game because she whispered it into my ear during one of our post-marilithed encounters.

So I'm definitely burning to get her the hell out of there.

And wondering what the fuck her player gets up to when she's unadvised.

The paladin kneels before a small, unadorned stone that marks where the ravaged remains of his love rest, and whispers a solemn promise to the fiend that lay miles beneath his feet-- the fiend and the soul it holds captive. The promise is simple and meant for both of them: I'm coming for you. And so he begins his journey, the quest he has given himself, a mission at which he can only succeed or die. Death, as the sees things, is a preferable fate to inaction. This thought gives fills him with vigor as he presses on to the mountain at the center of the world and through the vast desert surrounds it. It is a place not meant for mortals, with stinging sands and air so hot it blinds the eyes. Each day, at the sun's scorching midday zenith, the temperature is greater than the one before it, the light brighter, the ground more parched. No, the sun is not getting closer. He is getting closer to it.
    >> ಠ_ರೃ 06/15/10(Tue)05:08 No.10505585
The paladin reaches the mountain, a massive spur of jagged, sand-pitted granite that seems to pierce the heavens. He does not balk at the sight; he climbs. For weeks he ascends the rocky pyramid, gradually shedding his armor, and then his weapons, and finally his very traveling supplies as the mountain's towering bulk grows evermore unforgiving and tiring. One day, a short while before noon and in air so thin one might not see their own breath-- even were the air not burning hot-- he finds himself on the summit staring east. "Soon," he mutters between pained breaths, the sun infernally bright against his face.
    >> ಠ_ರೃ 06/15/10(Tue)05:10 No.10505613
The paladin stands alone atop the crown of the world as the approaching noonday sun races towards him. His compatriots could not join him this day, though they wanted nothing less. But it was not meant to be, for there is only room enough for one more on the solar barge. With a brief inhale of what felt like all the air the mountain had to offer and a running jump seconds before noon, he leaps into sun. He lands hard against the deck of the boat of the sun god, and thinks himself blinded for a moment. But he can see the hands before his face. All else is bathed in brilliant light, nebulous and ethereal as if he were not worthy to behold it. He is humbled by the sight, the sight of the unseeable.
    >> ಠ_ರೃ 06/15/10(Tue)05:11 No.10505649
Near him, though, the paladin sees something else on the solar barge. It is a set of armor, as magnificent as it is menacing, and beside it a massive broadsword. Jets of holy fire dance about and within the armaments, almost begging their use as the righteous flames swirl about his outstretched hand. And with the briefest of touches he knows exactly what they are: gifts from his friends. What they could not offer in body they offered in spirit, camaraderie, friendship, hopes, dreams, and even a hint of jealously, all to the gods and done every day during his long journey. The gods gave their prayers form; he must give them purpose. After donning the holy vestments, he wonders if, and prays that, the only things that might quench the flames that lick about him are not the scattered tears striking his breastplate.
    >> ಠ_ರೃ 06/15/10(Tue)05:13 No.10505675
Some hours later, the paladin stands at the prow of the sun god's barge as it plunges into the western ocean. As the boat is quenched and its radiance subsides, the water is replaced by an endless underworld sea of demons and devils, wretched souls and hellspawn, all with business with the barge and all simultaneously vying for its attention. But his business is not with them. He has no time for them. A scant ten hours might not even be enough time for the task before him. But to entertain doubt is to invite cowardice and so again he leaps.

His arms outstretched as a diver might, the paladin jumps from the solar barge's bow. The heat that his face has know for many days is replaced by a frigid howling wind as he plummets past the tormented countless of Duat. Deep in its depths, far below him, he can see a pair of faces that have haunted him for as long as the heat had. Strangely, at this far a distance, he can make out their faces as if they were before him. Both are twisted in rage, but it is their eyes that speak the loudest. In one set the hints of surprise and terror, whilst in the other a slowly growing tear. The paladin's lips curl into a smile. What, did they think he was bluffing? or worse, lying? Just who the hell did they think he was?

Why not use the demonic brand to learn the Demon Lord's true name? After all, it probably contains it in there somewhere, given that it binds the soul it's applied to with the Demon Lord's own soul.

And thinking about that, I highly recommend breaking the binding before you do anything that would destroy the Demon Lord. Preferably, that you subvert the bind at the source, so that it affects everyone who's been linked to the Demon Lord's soul. Otherwise you stand a good chance of accidentally obliterating every branded person along with the Demon Lord.

Sorry, OP. Only thing I can think of is to kill the Demon lord and replace him. Once you're subsumed his title, power, and authority, you could nullify his contracts and free his slaves. This will, likely, result in you forfeiting your paladin powers, though the good gods might see fit to offer you a better retirement plan than 'swap levels for fighter'.

Alternatively, if she is a demon now, then all the same rules apply to her regarding binding and warding. You can summon her with the correct rituals. You can bind her or trap her in the correct wards. Once imprisoned you could try to determine the extent of the damage to her soul and psyche. Maybe even fix some of it. IF the damage is 100% deep, all the way to her core, then a Helm of Opposite Alignment might revert her to her previous self. If it's more superficial and her behavior is due to direct control that she wants to fight but can't, then wishes/miracles might be able to loosen that control. Hell, Protection From Evil outright breaks all supernatural mind control, and it's only level 1.

I really can't recommend anything else anyone else hasn't, call that massive favor the good gods owe you, as well as anyone else that has any level of considerable power, grab artifacts and things of power; then go straight through hell to get your love back, and make that Demon Lord sorry for what he's done to her and all others.

Wow, can't believe this is still up.

Talked it over with the group.

    Operation is Go.

We play twice a week usually, so we should have the results in a few weeks hopefully.

It has some really good stuff in it. I believe the racial variants our DM is using came out of that boxed set. He came up with the setting on his own though.

I think the cosmology in Hamunaptra is set up as something more specifically Egyptian in flavor and structure. Our campaign seems more like the standard cosmology with Ancient Egypt laid over almost everything.

Wish/miracle could work but that's smalltime.

If you really want to save her soul, put the evil god that controls her soul into an eternal sleep.
