    *****Alt1977******

Of course you know about Julius Amirani. I'm sure there's not a person in the world who doesn't nowadays. Julius Amirani, founder of Alt/1977, owner of no less than 4,400 patents on technologies ranging from biotechnology to advanced materials science to electronic device manufacturing. Julius Amirani, net worth of 1.15 trillion dollars.
Until 1977, I was the president of Texas Calibrations, the foremost designers and creators of integrated circuits in the modern world. In 1977, our 'microprocessors' could execute one million instructions per second. A single processor manufactured by our engineers could make calculations ten thousand times faster than a human being, and for a thousandth the cost. We had more computing power coming out of our labs every day than the human race had ever seen before. For all that, in the space of a week, my company was destroyed, my stock devalued, and my facilities purchased for a pittance by Julius Fucking Amirani, who made our state-of-the-art technology look like banging rocks together. June 5th, 1977 was the day my life as an executive of the most important company in human history ended.

For... it must have been only weeks, but it seemed like years, I didn't think there was any recourse. Watching him soar to fame like nobody had ever known, watching him unveil technological milestones as if they were just minor upgrades... for a man who ran an industry based on slow progress, it was murder. As it turns out, however, Amirani's technologies have bitten more than just me. My plants had tens of thousands of workers, all replaced by machinery. And in one more twist, it turns out computer scientists are very, very good at making bombs.

Sooner or later, Amirani will pin me down. He's done it to so many others I've fought with. So, until then, let me tell you the story of Alt/1977 as I've found it over these years, and let me tell you of a world we never got to experience, a world he stole.

And please turn off your pocket Hi-Fi while I'm talking to you, it's very rude, you know.

The search for something, anything to base our suspicions on started a full year and change after the company had already taken the world by storm. It had, in that time, rooted itself so deeply in every country, in every sector of the economy, in every human life that just getting a few people and some flashlights together was a hell of a task. We didn't want to use any of their technologies, you see; we didn't know if they would react violently, or at all. It wasn't about attracting their attention back then, it was just nonviolent protest, you know, a boycott. It turns out it was probably the best move we ever took, not using their equipment to do our investigations.

We didn't have a plan, or a leader back then. To be honest we didn't need one. It was me, Fred Wheeler -- the guy from Intex, our main competitors back in the old days -- and a girl, I can't really remember her name. I really wish I could.

So, this entire thing, this started... well, we heard some rumors about Kruhl. That letter, you've seen it, I'm sure. Before then, the only way we opposed Alt/1977 was in spirit. We didn't like how they were colonizing the data frontiers of the world, we didn't like how monolithic they were, and that was the only protest we offered. But Wheeler, you know, he made a career out of seeing patterns where others didn't, and he was always a fan of Niven and Heinlein and those scruffy lot. Wheeler, he got this crazy idea in his head, you know, this stupid theory. He'd had it for a while, but that letter, that got him really going, and Wheeler when he had an idea was something out of mythology.

Wheeler simply insisted that they could not have this technology, so it must have come from the future. It simply must have. And he said that if you can go back in time, it's got to be a hell of a thing, and it must leave signs.

Now I didn't argue with that last bit, because the first part was so stupid that I didn't even try to argue. I guess it's because I never took Wheeler too seriously, I spent four years of my life hating the guy's every move. I never really listened to the guy until he thrust a greasy photocopy of that letter at me.

"You remember Jenna, head of Developing Technologies at your place?" he starts, all excited.

I probably said something about Jenna. It was most likely bad. Jenna had once turned me down for a date. I never liked her much, and I wouldn't start now, especially with Wheeler talking about her.

"Look at the fucking paper, Mike, we'll talk about your abandonment issues later."

Letter from Steven Kruhl, one of the "Golden Four" of Alt/1977, to Julius Amirani, President of aforementioned company. Letter dated September 21st, 1978. Date is three days prior to author's death.

I finally decided to go back to 2010. I know, we decided we were in this for good, but I miss my family, Jules. I've lived a year of parties and drugs and fun and money, but I'm a scientist from MIT, not a rockstar. I want to go back to doing things that are tough and break your back and make you feel like you'll never make any progress. At least that was fun.

(I ran out of Alt1997 images)

I'm sure you can imagine the rest. Wide-eyed ranting, yelling, speculation, doubt, skepticism, betting, and finally after a lot of alcohol me and him and an intern at my small printer repair company who we only took along because she had batteries for our flashlights in her car ended up at Alt/1977's International Headquarters. Jenna let us in. We didn't see her again, you know. I didn't say anything to her when she buzzed us through into the Corporate Wing, though I'd do anything to go back and -- no, no, that's the kind of thinking that put us here.

We didn't know quite what we'd do, we were pretty drunk to be honest, but as it turns out Wheeler was about to start something all the unshaved literature majors in the world could only dream about. And I was going to get shot at, for the first time not by an ex-wife. In fact, I was going to get shot at quite a bit over the coming hour and a half, which wasn't really as fun as I had always imagined it had been. I guess executives make bad action heroes, and it's not really fair when you only armed yourself with a small handheld light and veins full of whiskey.
    >> Anonymous 06/22/10(Tue)10:34 No.10664546
The security systems for the facility gave us no trouble. Jenna had, before she left, done something. I never asked her, again; I never bothered, I really should have. Whatever she did, the automated security never stopped us, no guards came to get us -- well, at first.

I'm not clear on the details. The alcohol was still in our systems, and the maps to the building were terrible -- not that I'm good with maps anyway -- but after a little while we left the Corporate Wing, passed through Materials Procurement and went down an elevator marked "SECURE AREA ACCESS" to the coldest room you've ever been in. It must have been twenty below zero in that room, and we were dressed for a warm early fall. I'll freely admit, the last though that ran through my head before the scene in front of us hit me was what the intern was wearing and what it'd show in the cold. I feel horrible for that.

The room was the size of a damn city block. The walls were draped in gold-shielded cable and cyrogenic pipes crisscrossed the ceiling, covered in frost. Halogen lights glowed from circular portals recessed into the walls. In the middle of the room was a machine two stories tall and uglier than anything you've ever seen, all exposed wires and poorly-fitted panels. In front of a small door to the inside of the device, slightly ajar, stood the richest man in history, holding a gun, standing over the fresh corpse of one Steven Kruhl, and looking at us with blankly.
    >> Anonymous 06/22/10(Tue)10:34 No.10664550
"What--" Wheeler began, but Amirani didn't give us a typical speech about his motives. He raised his gun and shot at us.

I don't... it was a tense few seconds, and all I really remember was the smell of blood, that coppery smell you can't really misplace. I can't tell you exactly what order it happened in, or how, but Wheeler and I were back in the elevator, Amirani didn't manage to kill us, and the girl, the intern, she had a hole in the front of her head about the size of a dime. The back of her skull was mostly missing. Wheeler threw up on her legs and I tried to push her into the corner, I'm not sure why, but I felt like I had to. The elevator dinged and after a few seconds I realized that meant we could leave. I tried to pick up the intern, but she was heavy and... I couldn't, I really couldn't, so instead I grabbed Wheeler and pulled him to his feet. He vomited again, on me now. I pushed him away and screamed something at him, he screamed back, and we ran down the hallway away from the elevator as fast as our legs could carry us.

We were lucky, in a sort of rational way. There was no big ALARM button on the wall of the chamber Amirani was in and the only way to get anywhere that had any sort of contact with the outside world was to go up the elevator Wheeler and I took. Amirani had a good few minutes of waiting before he could even sound any alarms. By that time, maps and my poor sense of direction be damned, our legs had carried us almost to the side exit we came in at. Just before my hand hit the doorbar the loudest siren I'd ever want to hear started blaring and a single guard poked his head out of a side door. A whole bunch more... five, ten, I don't know, were right behind him. I reached my car just as the gunfire started up. Wheeler was yelling at me to do something, I was trying to unlock the door, somewhere along the line we were in the car and driving away, a bullet hit the left-hand mirror, and we hit the highway. No one chased us.

Jenna's car, by the way, was still there in the employee parking lot we had used, next to ours. I didn't realize what that meant until later that night, but when I did, it made my stomach turn. In the fifty feet between the door and her car she must have gotten caught up, or detained. Whoever had gotten her had missed our entrance by seconds. They must have known she did something, but thank god it took them a while to figure out what.

It took us a good three hours of driving before we got to my parents' old home. We half expected commandos to be in the closets or something, but as it turns out a beat-up Torino Cobra that never saw proper maintenance in its life has no tracking devices on it, and we were never seen between leaving the Headquarters and arriving at the crappy, run-down cottage my parents bought when I was a kid and had loved so much. Some hours later found Wheeler and I sitting in the den, and he was looking at me with tears still in his eyes and blood covering his face. My flashlight lay on the coffee table, a small package of batteries lying next to it. I never got closer to understand Amirani than at that moment, thank god.

She may have been nameless but she was the first person to die for our cause -- maybe the first. I don't know if anyone ever got as far as we did, only to be caught under less fortunate circumstances. Both of us, we were just executives, we never wanted, never asked for anyone's death. We certainly never wanted to see it. Both of us, Wheeler and I, we didn't talk about it that night, but we knew what had happened, and we both knew if it was possible we'd go back and just forget the whole thing.

That night, though, that night... settled something. Without words, we realized that going back wasn't going to help anyone, even if it was (as it turned out) possible. Without going back, then, we had to fix this, and that meant all we could do was go forward.

I just had a great idea for this artist to do. Make a series of drawings revolving around a world where modern military weapons, B-2 bombers, helicopters, etc. were taken back to WW2 or possibly even WW1 and reverse engineered.

Here we go, beginning the backstory. This section is from another new character. I think you'll like him.
    ###################################

Memorandum from Professor Đuranović (Theoretical Physics). Date on document illegible, along with some portions of the text. Recipients unknown. Paper shows signs of being burned with an added accelerant. Bottom half of document missing, assumed immolated.

If this is to work, it would need either the most extraordinary containment structure ever devised, or it would be one-way. To be frank, my calculations estimate an energy release of 3.4x10^20 joules of energy -- almost the same amount in 82,000 [illegible]! -- for the system you've proposed. While the [illegible] will soak up some of that energy, we cannot with our current technology hope at all to stop the blast from simply [illegible] a large portion of the East Coast of America and going on to cause the single largest mass extinction event since the Permian-Triassic.

I cannot, ethically, allow any further research into this means of temporal manipulation. I'm [illegible] this project, and if [illegible, end of document]

Yeah, I remember the press conference they had when Mr. Kruhl died. I remember that I had to tell Dan, he did what I did for Mr. Amirani, he wasn't needed no more. That wasn't something I liked doing. But, yeah, the press conference...

"I personally resent the implication that Mr. Steven Kruhl's passing is to be seen as a blow to the company. To me, this is not a matter of business, this is a matter of losing a close and personal friend."

As always I stood at the back of the press conference, making sure not to show any of the reporters that I was armed. I was a bodyguard, I had to be armed, and people, they kind of know that, kind of understand that, but no one likes it anyway. It's hard to explain. I guess they wouldn't know I'd be more likely to draw to kill Mr. Amirani than to help him.

I know that might confuse you, because to be honest I'm the guy saying that and it confuses me. I'm not a thinking guy, you know. I didn't know how to spell my name until I was 8. Alexander Antonie, it's not that hard! But I'm, you know, I wasn't hired to think for the guy.

I guess that means I didn't really find any of the stuff I did intentionally, I just kinda found out things, small things at first that made me ask stupid questions. Even then, with what I knew, I didn't piece anything together until I was asked to get rid of two bodies, one tortured and one shot, on the same night. I mean, I'd gotten rid of a few bodies before, but I knew the one, that girl, and she was nice. She talked to me when I was just guarding an increasingly empty box of donuts on lunch breaks. And she didn't even look like... she didn't... after what they did... I don't want to talk about that, and you don't even know what happened yet, so I'll back up.

So, back when I was hired, this was... maybe, two weeks after the whole Alt/1977 thing exploded. I don't know anything about economics and stuff, that's above my head, but I'm good at protecting people and that's all they needed, so the guy who made a billion dollars in half a month hired me to protect him, and for over a year that's what I did. I did my job well, you know. I took that bullet from that fellow, Jobs or Gobs or something, in December '77. I was on the news for that, my pop called me up when I was in the hospital to tell me how great of a service I did saving the life of the greatest human being in history. My pop hadn't talked to me in years.

He was wrong, though. A good bodyguard, they don't go pokin' around in trash when they're bored. Bodyguards are always around really sensitive secrets because the people they're guarding are so important, and speakin' frankly you're supposed to try to not learn anything. See, normally, I was really good at not learning -- heh, you know, because I said I'm stupid? I don't learn? I'm not smart, you know so... yeah, okay, you probably get it. Sorry. So I was bored one day, musta been back in early '78 because I still had the long hair then, while Mr. Amirani was in a conference and asked me to just stay in his office for a while. There wasn't nothing to do in there, and he was in that meeting for a long time, but that's part of the job.

That girl asked me if she could have his trash, and I said sure, because I guess she wanted to throw it out. She dumped it all over her desk and started sorting through it, though, and I knew she wasn't supposed to do that, so I told her she shouldn't. I'm supposed to restrain people if they start prying, but you know, she was pretty and talked to me -- not much, I mean, I never learned her name, but she talked to me and sounded interested. She asked me if I knew anything about Mr. Amirani, and I told her that he liked to go on walks and ask me to tell some girls he wanted some company once in a while. She didn't like something I said, because she gave me a look, but then she asked if I'd want to know more, and I said sure, because I need to know this guy to protect him.
    >> Cr9 !PLAN9M8Wsc 06/22/10(Tue)17:32 No.10671601
So she pushed a paper in my hands, and it said at the top "Roadmap for Release, 1978" and had a bunch of stuff on it that looked nothing like a map I ever saw at all. It was all numbers and fancy names. I didn't know what to do with it, but she explained it to me, there, back in the secretary office for Mr. Amirani in early '78. And I didn't know it, you know, how much what we were doing mattered to the guys who I ended up workin' for. It turns out me, old Antonie, the guy who fell off the gym roof in '59 and came out smarter, was important for what I knew. Hah! And, my poor mom, bless her wherever she is, she always said it was my heart what would make me worth knowing. I guess she might be right, though.

It sounded kinda stupid to me back then, what her idea was, but I guessed that if we go forward in time someone might figure out a way to go back, and so I gave her a chance. Plus, as I said, she was pretty, and she talked to me, and it gave us time together. When I got the chance, I used my security clearance to get into Mr. Amirani's office, got his trash, and we sorted through it, and me and her, we thought about things. We never told anyone else, I mean, I sure didn't, she told me one day I couldn't, and I didn't. I never told anyone until well after she was dead, and even then it was hard because I thought she wouldn't want me to, but what they did to her, what... I mean, I needed to tell someone because I needed someone to help.

I gotta thank that lady. When she was alive, she was the first person who made me think I could put things together on my own and showed me how to do it. When... after she wasn't alive no more, she gave me the reason to keep doing it. I wish we had taken the time to breathe once in a while during those little get-togethers so I could hear her tell me her name. I know it, now, but I can't use it, you know. She never told it to me. Wouldn't be right.

Right now there are supposed to be more gaps than knowledge. He knows things, and assumes you know things, that you don't. As I write this and the world I'm trying to get down gets a bit more complete, you'll start figuring out what they're talking about. For now, here's some unwritten stuff that'll help you figure out what's going on.

The guy talking is Mr. Amirani's bodyguard. He's talking some time after all events have taken place to a figure we have not heard anything about, who is taking notes and recordings of these people for reasons still unknown. He is the same person that the Executive from the first part is talking to.

He starts this part trying to talk about a press conference held after Steven Kruhl's death, presumably having been asked about it, but ends up talking about something that he clearly wants to talk about more. The Recorder doesn't interrupt this.

The 'Jobs or Gobs' guy is Steven Jobs, who (if it weren't for Alt/1977) would have launched the Apple II to great success on June 5th, 1977. He is apparently bitter about his company, like so many others, being rendered totally obsolete, and tries to kill Amirani in an apparently famous encounter that the Recorder is, therefore, expected to know about. Of course, we the readers do not know of this, but that much could have been pieced together anyway.

What they find, the Roadmap for Release, documents technologies Alt/1977 is planning to introduce over the coming year -- technologies they clearly already know exist and anticipate.

The girl is Jenna, from the first part. He has to dispose of her body, and Kruhl's, on the day they die. He resents this, and it is the impetus he has for apparently starting to plot against Mr. Amirani. Presumably he did not recognize that he had to dispose of Kruhl's body. How he could not know that this was Steven Kruhl, whom he shows he is at least familiar with, is left unknown.

    Any other questions?

The newfag is strong in this one.
It is very much relevant to /tg/ if not for any reason other than this being a story for a game.
Don't worry, I know you most likely came from /b/ so you are used to seeing the shit all over the place on a message board, but you will begin to understand. If not, slowly become used to the variations of threads we have here.

Taking a break at this point.

The next part, I think, should detail a skirmish in Ukraine between Warsaw Pact regulars and a small group of soldiers from the British Army -- RGR, maybe -- paradropped in to support the UK-Ukrainian conflict in its infancy. I'm not sure about that; world conflict requires a world, which requires backstory by the bucketful. That implies hours of work researching and speculating and plotting.

But this much is known, I want cracks in the world. I don't want NATO and WP staying nice and tight. I want fissures, I want alliances being broken as a new, third power -- A/7 -- emerges. I want the UK being the head of NATO, I want America (and Canada, maybe, though the difference between the two might be cloudy) in its own deluded paradise of technology, unassailable with its technological advantage. I want everyone else left out in the cold.

I want a lot of angry people. I want them all looking in one direction. I want to see the walls of Eden from the outside.
