Oh no /tg/! Anon is totally out of weed!
Post images for him to make a quest out of, and we'll all have some fun.

Failing quest-worthy pics, I guess epic art dump.
Pic unrelated, if that's even possible.

    >Boats

The salty breeze through the open porthole rustles the papers on your desk. You reach out swiftly to keep several documents from spilling to the cabin floor, feeling your stomach lurch, more with excitement then with the gentle rocking of the boat to which you have become accustomed. In fact, you can hardly remember the feel of solid earth beneath your feet. You tke a deep breath to quell your anxieties, gathering several of the more pertinent research and rolling it up into your leather scroll case.

There comes the expected knock on your cabin. The captain, a gruff but fair man of weathered stature and beard, shifts his bulky frame into your cabin.
"We've arrived, your Eminence," he says. There is a touch of tired dismissal in his voice, not quite resentment, as he pronounces your title, almost an after-thought.

Looking out the porthole, you can see the dark treeline of the island, its single craggy peak splitting what is otherwise a cloudless blue-on-blue of sea and sky. You have come here on your first appointment as Court Alchemist following your mentor's tragic death. These are the first steps of your solo career, and you are expected to perform admirably. While the soldiers and sailors aboard this vessel are instructed to bring the glint of Imperial steel and the flutter of the Imperial flag to these shores, it is your task to plumb the depths of the forgotten jungles and unplundered wilderness of this new paradise.
    What is your name?

"Good day Eminence," come the murmured hospitalities and inclined heads of the crew as you make your way up the creaking wooden stairs, your wide-brimmed hat blocking the brightest of the suns' rays. The primary expeditionary crew has already returned from the preliminary search of the beach and immediate jungle.
"We'll sleep on the ship for the time being, until we can erect permanent shelter off the beach," Captain Speer muses, scratching his beard, eyes hidden in the vast crevasses carved by years of staring at the shimmering horizon.

"Let's go ashore then, shall we, Gillivers?" the captain says. You nod your head absently, double checking that your various salves, regeants, potions and tinctures are in place on the multitude of pouches covering your alchemist's clothes, woven of fabrics soft enough to incite the jealousy of the crew and adorned with gems both decorative and protective. You step gingerly onto the skiff hanging overboard, lowered along with the captain and a half-dozen musketeers to the choppy seas, small waves bobbing your smaller craft as you are rowed deeper into the small bay towards the blinding white beach sand. You feel the churning excitement in you again. Unspoiled land, flora and fauna both exotic and, most likely, mystical. You chance a glimpse upwards , drawing a sharp breath and looking away. The Second Sun is brighter here, far brighter than its twinkling torchlight seen from Imperial lands.

Sun of course is a colloquialism, and an inaccurate one. The Second Sun is not a heavenly body insofar as the brightest sages can tell, but merely some sort of...event, some beacon, some say a tear in the Aether itself, through which slip the threads of all the world's arcanity.

You come out of your musing, rubbing at your eyes to get rid of the trails caused by the sun and its fiery, unnatural counterpart. A pair of the musketeers have jumped into the shallows and are towing the boat ashore. You will have the run of the beach while the crew begins to fell trees for construction.

You make your way down the beach, your feet sinking into the loose powder of the fine sand. You hear the trudging of your assigned escort's heavily booted feet behind you as your eyes wonder at the scenery around you. You feel safe with him there, but you'd probably feel safe even if he was absent; the island is quiet, only the rustling of the wind through the trees, lofty and evergreen. The looming peak is ringed with clouds, suggesting the vague threat of a storm, but you don't think anything will come of it.

Your escort and bodyguard, a young man named...Sebastian something, you can't recall, follows you stoically and silently. The position of Court Alchemist is a highly respected one, as your mind holds the secrets of the dragon powder that fills the Emperor's cannon as well as the salves and regimen of potions that have kept him alive well into his fourth century. There are rumors among the commoners, rumors even you have overheard, that the Alchemists represent a vastly underestimated political authority, that they are in essence their own governing hierarchy, but you are too green to have yet experienced such games of intrigue and power.

You stop to examine the hard green fruit of one of the trees cresting the beach, prying it open with your deft fingers. You slip several of its seeds into a bottle hung around your shoulders, one of many empty specimen containers. You are admiring the tiny plant when movement catches your eye, past the beach and into the jungle beyond. An animal of some kind, perhaps even natives, though none were found on the first tentative foray.

"Sebastian, how safe are these jungles?"
"F...fairly, sire," your guard responds, seemingly surprised to be addressed. You suppose you haven't really done much talking, spending most of your time in your cabin, isolated in your intellectualism from the gruff physical camaraderie of the crew and the soldiers on board.
"That is, we found nothing that seemed an imminent danger," he adds, musket hefted lightly across his shoulders, saber ready at his side. Confident in your safety, you step into the low underbrush.
"Well then, let's take a bit of a look around," you say, your guard obediently following you into the foliage.

As the noise of the sea fades behind you the jungle seems even more peacefully quiet. You spot several worn-down portions of underbrush that would suggest dog-sized creatures use the forest floor as trails. Ahead of you the trees grow closer, the light dimmer filtering through overhead. Squinting, you think...no, certainly, it is...you see a human figure, lithe and tanned, flitting among the trees further into the jungle. Sebastian's head is craned back to gaze through the canopy at the filtering sunlight.

Your pace quickens as you rustle through the brush, intrigued. There was no mention of natives; perhaps you are merely witnessing some slender form of ape making its way through the trees? Motioning for Sebastian to keep up, you tread carefully into the deeper underbrush, when your steps fall to a stop, Sebastian nearly running into you.

In a small clearing up ahead, you can see pale blue lights, dancing listlessly through the air, and your heart catches in your throat. Wisps? Physical manifestations of arcane energy, created only with extreme difficulty in an Aether Crucible, in labs of Alchemy that no common man will ever see, here flitting about like insects in the broad tropical sunlight. There is no doubt about the goldmine this island represents; the Empire could search for forty thousand years and never find a land more rich in the pure, unbridled arcane. You are so caught in your reverie that your eyes fail to notice the shimmer against the tree-trunk. Your ears perk up at the faint spark, and you are bowled over by Sebastian, tackled to the ground in a flurry of scrolls, bottles, and armor.

Scrambling to your feet, you see the doglike legs, the quadruped form, rising into the truncated torso, twin arms bearing crablike pincers, a squat, tumor-like head hosting a motley bouquet of stalklike eyes perched atop flickering mandibles. Your hand traces its way to your wheellock pistol, safely ensconced in its leather holster.

You draw your pistol shakily, backing away from the creature. The nymph-like humanoid you saw earlier is nowhere to be seen. Instead you see the jungle floor around this hideous beast blurring, tiny flecks of blue light like fireflies across its skin. Could it be using magic somehow? Really truly bending the threads of the arcane to its simplistic, bestial purposes?

It rushes you, and with no time to consider alternatives, you pull the trigger, feeling the gravelly scrape of the wheel against the metal designed to produce the spark for the dragon powder.

You feel the flash of the powder, the glowing particle of alchemical resin bursting from the barrel of the gun. Unfortunately your shot is wide; your are mostly untrained in firearms, and your panicked state makes for poor accuracy.
You hear the musket's report, and the crablike creature skitters to the side, dull black blood splashing onto the jungle floor. Sebastian drops his spent musket, drawing his saber coolly. The creature circles you cautiously now, snapping its claws in challenge. You hear a few more electrical-sounding snaps, and two more of the creatures seem to materialize from the air, preceded by a strange shimmering. Sebastian moves between you and the creatures, his face cold and beaded with sweat.

You grapple furiously for your Sunsphere, backpedaling and stumbling over roots and stalks. You twist the two halves of the sphere, hearing the hiss of the two elements within combining.
"Sebastian! To the beach!" You shout before lobbing the sphere into the midst of the beasts. It impacts on the ground as Sebastian turns away from it. Light erupts violently from the sphere as it shatters like an egg, a small pulse of wind emanating from the blast and rustling the leaves around you. You hear the creatures' call, a chilling hiss, as you pound your feet through the jungle, hearing the rattling of your guard's armor behind you.

You burst out of the trees to see that the other crewmembers have dragged several felled trees onto the beach. Captain Speer is smoking a long thin pipe, overseeing the work of his men. He turns with interest and then concern at your approach.

"What on earth-?" he murmurs. "Gillivers, what in the Abyss is going on?"

"In the jungle, natural arcane aggressors, some kind of biomagical hybrid perhaps, or a sort of arcane construct, made to mimic flesh and animalistic sentiment."
"In the Emperor's tongue, for pity's sake!" The captain looks exasperated. You pant heavily for breath.
"...monsters," you croak as a half dozen of the centaur-like crustaceans erupt from the treeline.

The crew bursts into chaotic, yet well-oiled response. Muskets are fired into the charge, driving the first wave back and stopping the direct onslaught. A pair of crewmen push the skiff into the shallow waves, motioning for you to get aboard. You don't need to be told twice, scrambling into the shallows, almost heedless of getting your various powders and envelopes damp. Almost.
    >> StonerDM !em3oEn8LAg 07/31/10(Sat)02:08 No.11453759
The remainder of the crew falls back, and while the creatures splash into the shallows after you, they seem a poor fit for the waters, and quickly retreat to pacing on the beach claws clacking and mandibles hissing aggressively. They watch you all the way back to the ship, where the crew is waiting assembled on the deck. Captain Speer seems flustered as he steps off the skiff, watching the beach with dark eyes as he paces the deck excitedly.

Eyes shielded from the sun by the hat that somehow remained on your head, you watch the tiny figures skitter back and forth on the sands, heaving a sigh. Arcane paradise this island may be, but this won't be a simple task of gathering specimens and running experiments. Subconsciously, you begin running through dragon powder formulae; the crew may well need more than they brought.

A ways down the sands, away from the still-scuttling horde of vicious beasts, you see, or think to see, a slender humanoid shape standing on the beach, eyes shielded against the sun, watching your ship bob slowly at anchor.

    >That's it for tonight. Interest seems middling, but I'll shoot an email to all the old players and try to drum up some excitement. as for criticisms none on the quest its self but I'll be over in the corner shredding the notes I had jotted down to run a quest almost exactly like this and was planning to run in fall -grumble- no respect -grumble-

I'm happy to see you back Bro I was worried when Blood Quest had to end on a schedule that we would never get another quest for you.

I would say you should set a time frame for the quest end that way it keeps the pace from slowing way down.
