    196 KB Gladiator Manager Noxii !!7QBgUoRZH/p 08/21/10(Sat)06:48 No.11764346
The roar of the crowd. Ten thousand souls roaring and stomping their feet, eyes focused on the blood caked sand of a colosseum, where the fate of man, beast and monsters are decided.

Truly there is no more exciting game underneath the burning rays of the Dark Sun.

But in the roar of the crowd the savvy hear the clink of an endless waterfall of ceramic coins. There is money to be made in these games, and you do not have to risk your skin to acquire it.

In the harsh world of Athas, you have the resources and the drive to open up your own gladiator training school. You will have two business associates who are allied in your endeavors. What is your background?

    >I am an aging veteran gladiator. I do not have many resources, but I have earned my freedom and lost none of my martial skill. I can train the maggots in the arts I know and none is better at detecting that inner spark that separates a doomed slave from a future legend.

    >I am the slave of a local Templar. I have managed the gladiator stables since I was a boy and have mastered the secret art of finance. The previous manager was ripped apart by a Gaj. I have my master's resources at my disposal, but failure risks his displeasure.

    >I am a noble's son. With a fair bit of seed money and my two companions, this endeavor is far more palatable to my father than nights of broy and wenching. As a noble, I know the mechanisms of power than run the city state, and how to use my influence to cut a better deal.

    >I am an ambitious slaver. Years of dealings in the flesh trade has left me with a good enough amount of seed money to grab an opportunity by the balls when I see it. The other slave sellers? Pfah, I know HALF of them. Tilken Half-nose still owes me money so he'll swing me a better deal. My experience in the wasteland traveling with caravans lets me make arrangements for a quick get away if the need ever arises.

Two more votes and it will be confirmed.

Also we need a name (serious options only pls, roman/greek/persian fine too!) and a starting City.

The city will be our home base where we have a small gladiatorial school.

    >Raam, the city of Strife. High amount of chaos and corruption.

    >Tyr, the Free City. Ruled by the Templar Tithian

    >Balic, City of Sails

In our day they called us Marcus Attilius, we were once noble, but the debts owed by our house demanded we sold ourselves to the Arena to fight. We cared not what the mob called us, only that we won through, with the honour and courage that our station demanded.

    Tordek, the Mul Veteran Gladiator

    Advantages:
    >Fame – you are a minor celebrity in Raam. Some of the young templars that bet on you (and against you) remember you now they are approaching their middle age. Kids still sometimes play ‘Tordek and the Giant’ in the streets. You hardly ever have to buy your own drinks.

    >Freeman – you are the master of your own destiny. You can move from city to city and own slaves.

    >Veteran’s Eye – You can identify fighting styles fairly quickly and design tactics to counter foreign styles. In addition you have an instinct for telling when a slave has that survival spark or an opponent is going to be trouble.

    >Trainer – you can train your recruits in all standard and military weapon types. Also you can train your recruits in the Exotic proficiencies you know.

    Exotic Specialties
    ---------------------
    Cahulaks
    Giant Fighting
    Hoplomachus
    Dual punching daggers
    >Gladiator – You are just as deadly as the day you stepped out of the arena.

    Disadvantages:

    >Uneducated – you are illiterate and cannot do more than basic sums. Finances are currently beyond you. Untrustworthy souls may take advantage of you.
    >Wound – you have an annoying scar. On the plus side you can tell if it is going to rain. It may flare up at unopportune times.

I'd suggest buying three literate slaves and sending the first two to die horribly in the arena on minor pretexts, then telling the third that as long as he keeps the books faithfully, we'll manumit him after X years, but if we find that he's taken a cracked clay coin we'll flay him alive ourselves.

    Your Holdings

    >800 ceramic pieces
Not a lot since you sunk most of your money and time into building the school. Considering a blooded gladiator (level 2) goes for around 200 ceramic you have to spend wisely.

    >Gladiator School
    consisting of:
    -Single quarters for 3 gladiators
    -Barracks to house 10 gladiators
-Small beast pen (think size for 10 desert wolves)
    -Office (often your bedroom)
    -Sand field
    -Messhall
-Misc Cheap wooden practice weapons. Lots of them

    Illiene – Mindbender/Bookkeeper
A charming tattooed bald man, Illiene is a shark, quick to snap up opportunities. A psion who was previously owned by House Stel, Illiene has bet on you from day one and earned his freedom. Still associated with his merchant house, Illiene is semi-autonomous and fully devoted to your business endeavor. Few are the days he has drunk you under the table.

Beastmaster would be a good choice. (Buy the cheapest slaves we can find and have them eaten by whatever as a warmup show.

We might also want whatever passes for a healer, assuming they can keep someone alive after being stabbed in the guts. Sometimes gladiators have to die in the arena, but we should make DAMN sure we've gotten our money's worth first. Having a sawbones who can heal 'em up, graft a blade onto their stumps and send 'em back out to fight is going to be a big part of that.

Yeah. Based on your choice of starting background one would be locked in to cover your weaknesses.

    Some thoughts.

+Weapons can brake. I will write up sometime about which materials (bone, obsidian, stone, wood) are better for what type of weapons (piercing, slashing, bludgeoning) but it may not even matter. Will be close to 2nd ed rules.
+Upkeep of Property - I may revisit this sometime in the future but for the moment the food/water is taken care of.
+How are we doing combat? - Cinematically. I'm relying a bit on the Character Builder and the current class synergism.

This is okay but I'd rather get slaves from a slaver than a moneylender, because slavers from a slaver are more likely to be broken, physically fit and may have other qualities that make them good gladiators. Additonally, slavers from a slaver are getting an upgrade to their conditions, not a downgrade from a bad debt.

So the main argument for a moneylender then, is the money. While this is useful we will have to turn a profit anyway to survive, and so it becomes less useful as we progress. I am thus more drawn to a slaver, who also has medical training, than to a moneylender who helps us ultimately less.

Geb is a minor functionary in House Stel who got wind of your business plan with Illiene. Knowing a ceramic opportunity when he saw it, Geb got transferred from the slaver caravans to Raam proper. Technically under the command of Illiene in the Merchant House, Geb is a half-elven who knows the psychological tricks to keep slaves in line and in the best condition. Not a military man, he noneless has a minor psionic talent and is trained in the shortbow and longsword, for personal use. Many years of travel with the caravans has given him some minor wilderness experience and training at the best use of herbs to keep slaves fed and healthy.

The slave market is a glaring cacophony of sound and putrid stink when compared to the
the cool shade of the slums you just came from. Instinctively your hands caress your bone punch daggers, and fat merchant looks at you nervously for a moment, but there is no threat to your coinpurse. Not yet at least, you think, peering at ‘Hawkeye’ a slaver associated with House Stel. Illiene is beside you, humming a drinking song he picked up in the brothel yesterday and sliding the beads on the lacquered wooden abacus back and
forth, his telekinesis creating small pops and whiffs of ozone as he calculates the people on the selling block.

‘Alright Torak,’ he says, ‘we can chose from the wretched, the unskilled slaves, and the premium slaves they have today.’

‘The wretched are really only useful for practice against our new recruits, but on rare occasion we might find someone worth saving there.

‘The unskilled slaves are a notch above. They are mostly healthy and usually commoners taken from a raid or builders the nobles no longer have use for.

‘Criminals are a mixed bag. Often they are violent, quite often mad, and sometimes they are just not worth it because they have unfound wounds or illnesses.

‘The premium slaves they have on display…oh hey look at that,’ he whistles as a fierce green eyed elfen lass, clad in Nibanae blue silks is lead to the holding pen. ‘Heh. Looks like some noble is selling off a concubine today. They usually go for the price of a good gladiator.’

‘Anyway the gladiators lined up are a Thrikreen warrior, some lost insect without a clutch. There is a human greatsword wielding fighter, a half-giant battlemind, a dwarf shaman and a gith monk.

Usually the gladiators will go for 200 c a piece abouts. Now I have pull with Hawkeye, but I can only sway ONE purchase down 20%. Its your call.’

We need to find one or two with potential, and train them a little in secret. Then hire as many criminal psychopaths as we can and offer even odds on everyone in the betting. Worst case scenario, we don't make any money on the bets. Best case scenario, we win big on the betting, and have a couple of popular gladiators as well.

You surmise the Greatsword Fighter could take advantage of opportunity attacks the Thrikreen sets up for him. And the Thrikreen, while not uncommon, always excites the crowd.

    >Since I think this is fucking hilarious

Back at the compound Geb greets everyone all and looks over your new stock. As the ruffians come out of being 'processed' and delouced they file into the middle of the arena. The Greatsword Fighter looks on smugly. The Thrikreen moves his antennae curiously. The elfen lady remains stoic but watchful.

'THIS is a SWORD' Tordek booms as he drops a wooden practice sword to the ground. 'You! Attack me!' One of the biggest criminal bruisers picks up the sword dumbly and brings it overhand in a long sweep to intersect with Torkek's head. At the last second, the Mul's twin punch daggers come unsheathed and block the sword in an 'x'. A quick twist of the wrist disarms the criminal, followed up by a lighting fast knockout blow to the jaw. The criminal slumps down. 'Now HE will not be sleeping in a bed. Grab the rest of the swords you wretches and earn your sleeping quarters. Only the strong survive here.'

Just good business, we have to see how well they fight already. We probably want to repeat this for a while, or, as an idea, split the slaves off into two groups. One trains under the human fighter, one under the Thri-kreen. Every second day you'll train one of the groups. At the end of the week the two groups fight, and that's how we decide who gets the beds permanently.

The Shaman has barely enough time to raise his hand and begin to chant...when a shadow overtakes the sun. A rather large, rather sinewy, muscular shadow.

With a greatsword. The first strike connects with wicked force, but the shaman turns at the last second and the sword only seems to give a moderate bruise. Panting the shaman quickly summons his elemental spirit, a minor spirit of athas and then rubs the earth over his skin in a flash of movement (action point). His skin grows a deeper brown as this layer of elemental protection ...does absolutely nothing (32 damage or something) as Unstoppable slams down the blade in a brutal strike against the shaman's side of his head.

The shaman collapses, ears bleeding and is dragged off.

    Unstoppable flexes and grins.

I trust our Thri-kreen to be a ridiculous badass, as befits lone members of his race. But rolling anyway.

    Good thread, I enjoyed it.

I'm looking forward to the next one.

how about coming up with training ideas for our criminals and wretches?
    >> Anonymous 08/21/10(Sat)12:32 No.11766610
    >>11766579
Well, I'm the guy that suggested we split them up to train in shifts under Kr'ktt, Unstoppable and ourselves then make the different groups slug it out, and then repeat under a different trainer.

    I agree, let's be productive.

Hmmm. Do we want to provide group combat, or more along the lines of dueling? Because as one Anon said, people are fine with watching the helpless be butchered, or a thrilling fight between the skilled, but middle ground pisses them off. We could just present the 20 wretches as they are, split into two teams at random, and have an assortment of weapons in the middle of the field where they're at.
    >> Anonymous 08/21/10(Sat)12:36 No.11766651
we could have the nonlethal fight for a good bed become a daily thing
    >> Anonymous 08/21/10(Sat)12:40 No.11766692
    >>11766651
I said this too; but after a while we should phase this out. My suggestion was to do this every day for a week, in tandem with:

    >>11766610
And then after a week have the big brawl between the different groups to decide who gets the beds on a permanent basis. Or for the next month. Or week.

    >>11766639
Some of these guys just won't take to a weapon. I don't see any reason to -not- exploit potential on our regimen. If we really, urgently need more fodder then it's always going to be cheap as shit at the slave market. But a good fighter won't be, and as long as we keep training we might get one.
