    1.33 MB Zeonquest Pt78 One Year Later I apologised on 4chan !!857o4GkKJgy 10/08/10(Fri)12:28 No.12373425
Welp, whilst not EXACTLY a year ago, this is the nearest friday at least. So like Easter, this counts.

Basically a year ago, I embarked on a project that I'd secretly been wanting too ever since I read Ruby Quest one christmas spent in a holiday apartment in Portsmouth on my sisters (or brothers I forget) laptop.
I waited a full 8 months for the initial surge of quests to die down, and then began.
At which point something like 5 or 6 new quests started up alongside me (Slugquest, Charmander Quest and I think Frost Giant quest were amongst them if I recall)

Anyway, it's been a full year since then and a lot has changed. My computer for one, as apparently Zeonquest was just TOO AWESOME for it, causing it's power supply to die. My health, my RPG group, my job in Community Radio, all have been and gone since starting this project.

So, a year on. What are YOU guy's proud about?

    YOUR ORDERS?
    >> I apologised on 4chan !!857o4GkKJgy 10/08/10(Fri)12:29 No.12373435
Also: If anybody actually ever USES that image as a wallpaper... don't expect to EVER find your icons again.

    Unless you have a Mac.

Incidentially, if you want any of my old wallpapers for Zeonquest, you can ask.

I am proud that we have been kicking the Federation's ass, and would have given Amuro and the White Base the spanking they so richly deserve, if not for plot armor.
I can't complain too much, since it's that very same plot armor that's kept us alive so far.

So let's get out there and start some shit and fuck up the Federation's day again.
    >> Anonymous 10/08/10(Fri)12:34 No.12373476
I've been doing the same thing I've been doing, sitting in front of the computer idly watching the hours slip by.

Also I had a landscaping job for about 5 months before they laid me off.

I'd say the biggest thing for me would be keeping Garma alive!

Of course, we did also manage to start a Zeon civil war at the beginning of the main Feddie counterattack...

Talk to Garma. Does he have any immediate missions for us to do? Should we start planning for a sneak attack on Luna II, preceded by a commando raid to sabotage their life-support and space defense systems? Or should we get ready to be orbitally inserted into the Rio Grande Defense Line to tear the Federation buildup there a new asshole?

Other than that, get our suits repaired, give the unit some downtime, and write up commendations for our infantry. Oh, and put in promotions for most of our unit. I think Jolyne, Elain, Zolomon, and Bernie needed promotions, and commendations for Calvin and Hovis.

In the long run that's probably to your benefit, as it cleany divides Zeon into - Gihren's faction & Everybody else. So when things finally finish, you've got a way of escaping a fair few of those warcrimes charges.

As long as you win this Civil war.

That and keeping Ramba Ral alive.

I've gotta rush to work so I dont have much time. Once things get rolling can we talk to Garma about us taking a side trip to Pezun. I'm sure they'd like to get our combat data after all of the fighting we've been through.
The Mashiba Team, us and our mechanized infantry team should be debriefed on what we know about Fed Assault Carriers.

If/ when we get to Pezun ask them about the following:
-Gelgoog upgrade packages including magnetic coated joints
-Kampher Flight type with Gouf flight type legs
-Beam Sniper MS to counter GM sniper

-A UMP compatable fighter that could be armed with beam weapons to counter the Federation Core Booster.

I've been working on fighers on /m/ for the past week and eventually came up with pic related.

The Gelgoog Jaeger already does that, now that we have it. Apparently its beam machinegun has a sniper mode.

Well, after the battle for the orbital zones is finished. Garma begins organising the forces and resources that managed to make it up here. He's ordered several Pazock Cargo ships to begin transferring the resources and forces to the nearest friendly base.

Which in this case, is Pezun. Which in the aftermath of what Gihren tried last time, has now largely thrown in with the Legitimacy.
Even Garma's beginning to acknowledge that something more definate has to be done about Gihren sooner rather than later. Although no specific orders from him yet.

Anyway, given the badly mauled nature of the Outer Heaven, you've been ordered to limp your way there and get repairs.

    -----

One of the things I'm most proud of was Elaine. Seriously, she was supposed to be just a throwaway namedrop character to make up your numbers whilst you were in the Deep South for the Hildolfr Campaign, and also a man.
You lot however, were not having any of it, and seven, eight months on, she's one of the principal members of the team, and if we ever get as far she's probably going to have her own Quest for Double Zeta.

I've got to run so I'll drop off my 2 cents. We've done a good job excuting the combat part but it's time we become political animals.

    IC:
Zeon is currently in turmoil due to the civil war and now the feds know this. One way we can help even out this disadvantage would be to inflict something similar on the feds.

Thus while we rest and refit, we begin studying the history of the Federation and its charter for any chinks in its armour.

    OOC:
This really means finding out about the Visk Foundation and the lost charter. We'll probably have to find incognito to help out.

That PROBABLY still happened in some form then. Remember, White Base still had an Africa arc, but instead of Ramba Ral, you had Char hounding them all the way backed up with the antagonists from Gundam: Cross Dimension on the SNES.
IE: The crazy psychopathic penal troopers in Efreets and Zaku's with Flamethrowers.

I mean, you already know that they lost their Guntank somehow.

Of course, by having the Wulfgar Team assigned to Char, they weren't able to stop the delivery of the Pixy Gundam to the federal forces, hence you having to face 4 of the buggers in Odessa.

Does anybody remember what the teams current ranks are?
I may have lost track at some point...

We all know that David's a Commander, Zolomon is either an Ensign or Lieutenant JG. Elaine's probably one of the Petty Officer ranks still, as is Hovis. The Outer Heaven, following the trail of cargo vessels and Escorts, makes Pezun in 18 hours. The engines are struggling with all of the extra work you've had to do. Plus large sections of the ship have had to be sealed as they're open to deep space.

Eventually however you make inside. The docks of Pezun aren't the best for dockwork, and the sealed drydocks of Solomon or Grenada would have been better, but not even Mauser was sure if you could make that far.

As you dock, all non-essential crew are promptly kicked off into the station itself.
Waiting for you at the end of the umbelical tube is your old CO: Wolfgang Strauss, now sporting the markings of Captain. Looks like he's managed to stay ahead of you in rank yet again.
He greets you happily and shakes your hand, and then greets Zolomon as well.

"It's great to see you all made it out of Odessa alive. When we heard the news we all feared the worst."

"It could have gone better, and we were hours away from taking Jaburo." You tell him.
He ushers you inside the station, and tells you to find some accomodation whilst your here, and to then come find him in the Officers mess, where you can swap news and stories.
Pezun's administration desk is swamped with the extra influx of work, but they manage to secure you rooms and offices in the habitation areas.

01 (Prototype) was destroyed in Canada. Amuro's in the 02, and from the sound of it it's about to give out any day now between Char hounding it across Africa and Amuro's own abilities. Bandit is currently in posession of the 03, we just encountered 05, and the Mudrock, 06, was destroyed in the second Jaburo raid.

So, only 01 and 06 have been destroyed so far.

In a flash, you could say?

Anyway. You do the paperwork and put the rest of the team on leave. Although you're dog tired, you did still promise to talk with Strauss in the mess hall before the end of the day.
You page him and make your way there.

In the mess hall you don't spot anyone famous like last time. Which is probably a good thing, it was pretty noisy when Dozle had been there, what with his wife about to give birth an all.
You find Strauss and settle down at a table with a drink. You don't take anything alcoholic, you don't think you'd be able to stay awake if you did, and talk about what's been happening.

You trade stories about Jaburo and Odessa with his stories about how the Civil war's going.

Apparently things are still rumbling on. Neither side so far has been willing to start a pitched battle the size of the one that started it near A-Boa-Qu, and even small scale battles like the one you had here at Pezun when the Loyalists wrecked the Gelgoog labs are pretty rare.
It's mostly been small scale skirmishes, often only ending in one or two casualties as one side realises it's got the losing hand and backs down.
Neither has made any big pushes to take rival territory yet. It's been mostly subterfuge and politics. Which is what Ramba Ral and his team are doing now, in some Loyalist Side, trying to get them to switch over some way.
Strauss confesses he's not sure how long you've got until somebody flinches and things get really bloody.

Anyway. so you trade small talk about things back on earth vs here in space for about an hour longer before you're able to make your excuses and drag yourself back to your bunk. Where you promptly crash.

When you wake up, 12 hours have passed, and your necks stiff, but that's nothing a pressure shower on a high heat can't handle.
You've got mail on your electronic station confirming a one rank increase for everybody, and a cosign for multiple Medals of the Knights Cross (in service of defending this great nation against odds thought impossible. Exact words.)
There's going to be an awards ceremony in what looks like about 5 hours or so. Luckily your dress uniform survived all of the combat you've been doing.

Gyan Variants listed are the Mass Production Gyan, whose designation appears to have settled on GMS-14, the G probably standing for Granada, where most of the work on the Gyan was done before final testing in Texas Colony, and so you don't confuse it with the Gelgoog.
Anyway, aside from the MP variants, the High Mobilty, Cannon, Marine and Kreiger variants are all listed as being tested. There's also a blanket call for any Gyan pilots to donate their combat recordings for further study.
The purpose of the test seems to be a) to test out the Gyan Cannon, and b) Hash out a clearly defined tactical role for all of these variants.
You DON'T see Cima's apparently custom model listed.

Are you sure? I don't think he made full Lt. Just the JG. I mean we both started at Corporal, David got a full promotion to Lt JG after you got put in command of your own squad. But they couldn't justify promoting Zolomon quite as much as this and only bumped him up to PO 1st Class. He then made Ensign, and then Lt JG. So he's probably now LT.
We can't promote him any higher than that though, since Commander (our rank is just above his)
Unless somebody was to upgrade you to Lt. But that letter appears to have been lost in the post.
It might make a suprise showing during the awards ceremony later today though.

Okay: The test shows that with Hovis in the Val Valo, the excercise calls for a three man team, swapping out with two others from other units (who have already booked.) So three people for this test seems to be all you can spare.
They'll be a joint excercise with all three squad as a company level operation at the end.

You've kind of got it backwards, most of the internals from the Act Zaku project made their way into the UMP and the Gyan and Gelgoog in the first place. Plus theirs an uncomaptible size difference.

As for getting everyone else's suits and/or joints magnetised, Ookawara and the team say that they'll try to fit it in in between repairing the ship.

    Now.

    Onto the combat test.

    Ah, missed your post somehow.
An enhanced reactor is probably possible, as your's was always a little tempermental with it being so bleeding edge at the time. But since the Gelgoog and you capturing that Trojan Horse, things have progressed a little. A more conventional (although still top-tier) reactor could probably be fitted quite easily.
As for maneouvability verniers, the techs say that again, they'll see what they can do. They probably won't add any new ones, just try to increase the Ooomph (it's a technical term) of the ones you have.

Anyway. You, Zolomon and Elaine decide to take the role as squad 3. This means that you'll be going last in the exercise. Jolyne opts to take part in Gyan tactical exercises, as does Calvin, who's probably board if having to pilot second string Mobile Suits all the time (well, excepting the Pezun Dowdage.)
You see Hovis suit up for combat in the Val Valo and head off.

For the purposes of a fair test, you've all been given MS-07FZ Zaku Kai's to pilot.
From what you can tell the general brief of the mission is to find a way to defeat the mobile armour. Then discuss tactics with the other two teams and try to has something superior out.

On the plus side, going third gives you the best oppourtunity to watch the other two teams first, plus you get time to pick your weapons loadout.

You play close attention to the Val Valo, it appears to be probably the pinnacle of the Bigro's evolution. Fast, agile and heavily armoured and armed. The curved armour smacks heavily of a design still not adapted to a beam rifle warfare world, but it's speed and several of it's weapon systems should negate that.
Your primary worry is the lightning emitter pods that it's using (on a low power setting so as not to damage anybody) to stun it's targets. Plus it has a massive amount of attack vulcans, and the Mega Particle Cannon is EASILY the largest you've seen fitted onto an MA.

    ANY INITIAL THOUGHTS?

Since we're on Pezun I have to ask. What ever became of those essays we were working on?

I imagine the one about policing and controlling the parts of Earth Zeon occupies isn't really important anymore, what with us slowly losing ground. But the one about combined arms would probably still be useful in space, and because the Earth front will definitely need to make the most of everything we got to keep the Feddies at bay.

The best approach vector for attacking it is going to be the upper rear or front arcs. The majority of the Val Varo's weapons are built for attacking head-on, and it's bottom is guarded by those massive battle claws it has. Coming in from behind may open us up to leader attacks, but we should be able to spot those beforehand. Unless Hovis gets tricky.

The problem will be coordinating an attack run. Val Varos are stupid fast, so you'd have to be extremely precise to intercept it like this, otherwise it just blows past you and you fly right into the cloud of leaders it just dumped in your face, or you come in too soon and get a mega particle cannon blast for lunch.

Which means that there are many, many ways that it can leak out. There is a silver lining in that fact, as it will likely add to our respect in the eyes of some of the Federations leadership, which could help with a peace deal or at least a cease fire.

Okay, so whilst you're going through your weapons options you watch the first team give it a go.
Since you'll be piloting Zaku Kai's you don't have any beam options, you'll have to use a more standard bullets and explosives lineup.

None of the other Teams are from companies or divisions that you're familiar with. This is not usual, a lot of mixed companies, battalions and even individual squads and MS were thrown together after Odessa, and these exercises are (you suspect) as much for merging these disparate forces into a cohesive force again as they are for testing out new tech.

The first squad attempts a bait and ambush technique, using wide looping attack runs to try and attack on the flanks whilst one guy with an 880 barely supported by his Zaku's frame to try and keep Hovis's attention.
In theory it's a good plan, but you've seen Hovis multi-task four gun turrets against enemy tanks and whilst engaging in an over the horizon artillery duel in his Rhino.
As you expected when the flanking units appear he disrupts them with a swarm of mini-missiles before stunning them in place with two sets of Plasma Leaders. This gives him the time he needs to finally push forwards and peg the decoy with his particle cannon.
He then loops around and finishes the immobilised MS with his claws.
    First round to Hovis.

The second team seems to lack subtlety, although you have to admire their bravey (or stupidity whichever) as they attempt to charge the Val Valo so as to put themselves outside of the effective range of it's gun.

Problem is then that you're in range of the claws. Computerised pressure systems measure the Mobile Armour take out two of them fairly quickly, the third takes longer to dispatch as it trys to hack its way into the cockpit, but he's eventually able to swat him off with his claws.
Nevertheless, you see that the MA registered some damage this time. Last time the Decoy couldn't even shoot straight.

    Looks like it's your go.

You could string together some panzerfausts and have a lure drop them while Hovis is chasing him. That will be a lot harder to see than the chainmines. When those go off in the Val Varo's face have Zol dive in and slap some chainmines on the top rear of the Val.

We should probably have David pretend to be the reckless Zol so that Hovis is expecting him to rush in to melee instead of the actual Zol. Elaine can be the bait. David should look for openings while Zol rushes in when the fausts go off.

I don't know if that counts as cheating though since we are utilizing Hovis' knowledge of his teammates against him.

Do you mean grenades or Panzerfausts? PZF's are hand-held rockets, if you leave them dangling they'll just fly off wherever.

But otherwise, the decoy uses these to keep the Val Valo distracted (maybe even damage it a little) whilst you come in as a second distraction from the bottom, looking to melee with it, whilst Zolomon comes in from the top and applies the Chain Mines.
If this provides an opening the rest of you do as well.

Some kind of trap maneuver, but the apparent trap (getting the MA to follow the decoy with the det packs) is just a distraction for the others to line up shots with panzerfausts. If the MA sees through it and goes after the other two, then the third can go after the MA with chain mines.

Anyway, I say we take the MMP-80, since it's probably going to last us longer, and the extra punch will help against MA. Take the accuracy hit and give Elaine the 360, since probably won't affect us as badly as the Rakaten did the other team.

And use the chainmines if we get the chance, but don't rush in. Team 2 tried that and got steamrolled. It's inevitable that we'll get in range anyway, especially Zolomon, so we should use them as weapons of opportunity.

Chain mines pretty much ARE Det Packs though.

Your plan hashed out between the three of you, you take up starting positions and begin. Taking a looping path, you give the impression of trying to flank along the sides like team 1, but then quickly alternate with a vertical movement instead.
Meanwhile with her Dom Bazooka, Elaine keeps the pressure on the Val Valo, the accuracy is better as you notice Hovis having to take blasts on the claws to try and keep his main body safe. He's returning fire with vulcan array's and megaparticle shots but's he's not hit anything yet.
On the other-hand according to your readouts his claws heavy armour is still holding.
Intent on giving him something else to worry about you ramp your thrusters to maximum output and charge from underneath him your Heat Hawk prepared, you fire one handed with your SMG. Some shots go wide but you get his attention and he manages to blunder into a Stickbomb Grenades as he does so. Damage register tell you his left hemisphere sensors have been damaged. A lucky hit, but you aren't complaining.
The large form swoops around with obscene grace and brackets you with bullets, mindful of a third opponent it launches a web of crackling lightning behind it to deter Zolomon.
It then fires it's beam cannon at you.

Risking the bullet damage, you dodge out of the way, the Zaku Kai doesn't have the speed you've gome to expect from the Act Zaku however, and you're leg is bathed in green light. Simulated warning signals and overload failures follow, but you manage to keep the suit's reactor from quenching, or exploding.
Bullets pang of your heavy armour as well. But don't penetrate.

You see Zolomon, having finally gone around the Plasma Leaders move in on his own attack, unfortunately, with your attack stalled he spots Zolomon and fires a salvo of ventral rockets at him, Zolomon responds as usual.
By throwing a heat hawk at them.
The spinning blade flies through the small munitions, detoating enough to cause a sympathic chain reaction that takes them all out. The hawk itself flies out of the other side of the paintcloud and heavily bounces off the side armour of the Mobile Armour, leaving a great shocking pink line across it's dorsal armour.
The data feeds report a simulated engine power reduction of 20% to you.

Using one leg you push yourself backwards, trying to get some distance, and also trying to keep Hovis off balance with renewed fire from your SMG.
Zolomon continues to charge the Val Valo, now bearing the Chain Mine. The MA's crab like pincers lash out and Zolomon entangles them with the Chain-Mine. They grab his left leg before he is able to detonate them. You reports tell you Zolomon's leg below the knee has been "destroyed".

Before the paint clears your data-feeds are already telling you that the arm has been completely destroyed, and the explosions have reduced the armour of the cockpit area down to 70%.
Now legged however, Zolomon's maneouvability is reduced and Hovis closes in again to try and finish the job with his vulcans and beam guns.

Then out of seemingly nowhere, Elaine makes her comeback. Hovis spots her as she closes and swings the Val Valo around and brings his last Pincer arm up to face her, still spewing bullets. She fires her Bazooka at it at point blank. Already weakened by her previous shots, this time the arm damage registers as total, and the Val Valo discovers itself in close combat without any close combat weapons.

To his credit, Hovis reacts well, and tries to scare her off by alpha-striking everything he has in her direction, and gunning his thrusters to maximum to try and get so close that he can't miss.
All however this actually results in however is him ramming his cockpit into a brace of 4 grenades.

Luckily though they don't mind so bad, since they know who you are.
You talk them through the practicalities of fighting on a three dimensional plane, and also in the vital importance of killing the target as quickly as possible, especially when it's as lethal as a Mobile Armour. But also in not rushing your assault or not taking care.
You ask Pezun Control to reset the exercise.
Maybe the other teams will do better now.
You doubt it though, Hovis is probably learning from this as well...

You realise somewhat belatedly that you're actually enjoying yourself for a change. Best enjoy it whilst it lasts you guess.

    TO BE CONTINUED...
    HAPPY ANNIVERSARY EVERYONE.

    OMAKE

"The Federations dramatic turn of fortune in the later months of the war have been attributed to several things. A larger manpower base, the creation of MS Scale Beam weapons by Dr Minovsky, The Gundam, and also the tactical treatise Mobile Suits in Action, by David Lister, the famous Zeon ace.

It was this treatise that showed Revil a way to make use of their vast older Tank armour reserves in concert with their fledgling Mobile Suit divisions, something that had been eluding them until that point.
It was these tactics, as well as Listers discussions on Mobile Suit mobility and the tactical function of the Dodai Flying Platform in particular which would enable the federation to win the battle of Odessa when it seemed as if Zeon had stalled their advance.

How such a work made it's way to the Federation is actually a tale in and of itself. The Musai Cruiser Zasaramel after leaving Pezun for a refit and to take on new mobile suits was ambushed by a federation patrol group along the skirmish zone of Luna II. Both escorting Mobile Suits were destroyed by a clever use of local terrain by several squads of the relatively new Ball.
Rather than face destruction the Captain of the ship surrendered, and the ship was boarded. Whilst the captain had time to purge the central database. Several stray files that he happened to be reading at the time survived.
One of these was a rough draft of a combined arms strategy that had been making the round in Pezun whilst he was there. It was of course the MSiA doctrines. Which, were then transmitted to General Revil, presumably as a gift rather than a document of vital import. It's believed that the Captain of the leading Salamis thought it would make an interesting curio for the General.
He was more right that he realised, and the book quickly began making the rounds amongst the top echelons of the Federation GHQ thanks to Revil. From that point on, General Revil would have a deep respect for David Lister, and the Nachtmaren.

    The Zeon Captain.

Apparently lost his balls when faced with titanium ones so we'll relive him of those too.

Well, on the bright side, he might actually listen to us if we bring an offer of a cease-fire.

I just realized that we don't know where Char is.
We need to find out where that slippery fucker is, and make sure that he doesn't cause any trouble. Just because he knows that it was Gihren that killed Zeon, doesn't mean that he won't still go after the rest of the Zabi family and destroy Zeon in the process.

Well it looks like we've asked the techs about giving most of the suits in our unit magnetic coating, but no they didnt get down to anything like that today.

We really should take the opportunity to try out the various Gelgoog types before we ask to get a custom one fitted out. Talk to the techs in charge of rebuilding the MS-14 program and ask how it's going.
Worst comes to worst we can have Elaine's High Mobility Type modified into a Jaeger before we leave.

I really hope that everything culminates in a cease-fire and peace treaty being signed rather than a surrender, and that David meets Revil face-to-face at the talks. Both have a book written by the other to be signed by their respective authors.

I think that first we need to keep tabs on Char, and we can keep it IC by checking if he went with Garma, and what Garma wants us to do. After our R&R and Repair and Refit at Pezun is completed, we should really take out Gihren. The faster that his faction is neutralized as a major threat, the faster Zeon can concentrate on forcing the Federation to a standstill and getting a cease-fire signed.
