Cast, recent events, glossary, etc. Beware giant walls of text. Feel free to just ask me instead if you're confused or joining now.

You've succeeded in defeating and mostly capturing intact a numerically superior enemy taskforce. The modified Leviathan virus you uploaded to the Exigency home worlds should halt any immediate reinforcements and perhaps even force its leaders to reconsider the wisdom of their latest aggression. Your people are in high spirits. They look to you with hope and something approaching worship. They know you are not infallible, but their trust in you is absolute.

The actual situation of your ragtag fleet is much more precarious than the mood would suggest. Without your direct uplink to the helm, the VSD Auspicious has reverted to a barely functional barge just shy of completely falling apart. Admiral Flint himself almost became a casualty aboard the ship. Due to the damaged powergrid, his life support failed in the middle of surgery. His doctors are trying their best to revive him from his coma, leaving you in command for the foreseeable future. While your reinforcements are in a better state than the Auspicious, once again you've run into the same problem that plagued you when you first captured the Hierarch. Everything comes down to logistics.

Then logistics is something that we will need to address.

Do we have any shuttles capable of hyperspace travel, and are Major Medine and Major Pax aboard?

    >4chan is slow for me right now. still posting.
    Yes they're both aboard.

    Your forces:
VSD Auspicious (Victory class. Heavy damage to hull and computer systems)
    IS Ephemera (Strike cruiser. Repaired.)
ESD Hierarch (Imperial class. Light damage to hull.)
ESD Oracle (Tector class. L+ infected. Moderate damage to hull)
ESD Counterpoint (Imperial class. L+ infected. Bridge deck destroyed. Moderate damage to hull.)
ESD Stone Wolf (Imperial class. L+ infected. Heavy damage to hull and main reactor.)

    9 Squadrons TIE Fighter
    4 Squadrons TIE Bomber
Three mixed battalions (~2000 ground troops)
    Various Shuttles, probes, support vessels.
    Various ground assault vehicles.

The local planet is fortunate enough to host a small naval academy. By taking on their numbers and other groundside personnel, and invoking the right of conscription, you could muster close to 50,000 crewmembers. That's only enough to crew the Auspicious, Ephemera, and two of the larger warships at near optimal capacity. Without conscripts you would only have enough people to fully crew one ISD. You've seen firsthand the peril of taking a ship into combat with only a skeleton crew. The Hierarch's biggest contribution to the last battle was psychological. It scored only three turbolaser hits throughout the entire firefight.

Meanwhile, you must contend with over 100,000 prisoners who continue to behave only as long as they believe they cannot effectively fight back. Should their mood change, you might have a mutiny on your hands beyond the scope that even you can deal with.

And finally, repairs. The only shipyards in the sector designed to service the massive Imperial Star Destroyers were in Procca Major and Dantus. One is gone, and the other is in the firm grip of the enemy. The supply depot at Lidaan, the commercial docks at Harridan, and the abandoned factory ship you discovered near Arah all hold some promise, but restoring your most damaged warships full to combat readiness will be very slow going.

As I recall, the Factory Ship our probe found was using an Imperial security code 8 years old. Either of the two majors, being from Imperial Intelligence, may know of it. We can also go through our own droid memory and the memory banks of the Ravenous and any archives that remained on Redspire City from the Sector Fleet Command for those codes.

My one main concern is if Farlander should go to the factory ship as well. Being a droid, we can interface with the ship directly, even if we don't attempt to control it.
But this is Star Wars, not Star Trek where the captain of the ship and his senior staff regularly go on ground missions.
We will also need to innoculate the factory ship, and provide it with the kill-code for the Super Leviathan.

    >my bad. missed your latest find on the map.

You receive one small piece of good news. It appears the Exigency disabled most of Commander Senn's squadron before they received the retreat order. According to her, "the bad food and worst lodgings felt just like basic" but her people are unharmed from their brief imprisonment. They're requesting permission to return to active duty.

Commander Vosk tells you the fleet needs a minimum of 6 days to complete rescue operations and perform enough minor repairs to make all ships hyperspace ready. Now that you have some time to plan, what are your immediate orders?

Why would any government call themselves "The First <anything>". They would just call themselves The Empire, possibly with some descriptive words in there to describe what type of empire they were... Roman, British, Ottoman, etc. Empires don't usually get ordinal numbers until at least the second one... Second Reich for instance. Obviously whoever designed that money in the picture was a rebel since they must be plotting the downfall of the empire and the rise of some other one after it.

It's too bad we don't have an industrial factory that specialises in carbonite; otherwise, we could freeze the Exigency personnel in carbonite until the end of the war.
Are there any prisons or at least tracts of land on Vanguard that we could settle the prisoners on until we can properly process them?

After some digging and suggestions from Madine you find out the derelict vessel is an Exterminator class prison factory ship. For those with the access to know, they have a rather fearsome reputation for turning the alien inhabitants of entire worlds into slaves for the Imperial war machine.

To prevent prisoners from hijacking the ship, they must receive approval from a monitoring site before every hyperspace jump. It's possible that due to the chaos at Imperial Center the codes were never sent.

Commander Vosk is to coordinate the repairs; critical systems first, such as reactors and propulsion on the ISD Stone Wolf and VSD Auspicious.

I am going to say that we're going to need to conscript the inhabitants of the naval academy to crew the Auspicious, Hierarch, and Oracle.

We need to speak with Captain Tanner, to see what he is willing to do.

And finally we need to prepare Majors Pax and Medine, as well as an engineering team to go to the Factory Ship to recover it.

    >We need to speak with Captain Tanner, to see what he is willing to do.
Captain Tanner is stuck in a bit of an awkward situation. From the little interaction you've had with him, you get the sense he's gotten himself into a bigger mess than he intended and now has no clear direction to go. He can't exactly just fly home, what with the whole abetting treason thing, but he's not looking to get involved in an extended military campaign that he has not particular attachment to.

Immediately begin disinfecting the computers of the Oracle. We'll probably use it as part of our squadron.

You don't know where those codes might have been sent from, or what they may be. Madine tells you there's a chance the techs can dig up a passable security code from 8 years ago but they're not sure if it will work.

The ship is controlled by a droid brain. You might be able to appeal to its mission and commandeer it.

You know very little about the ship's specifics. That you found any reference to it at all was already a welcoming surprise.

Well, if Captain Tanner doesn't wish to put his crew in the line of fire, we perfectly understand. We do not outrank him, and technically he is not under our authority (seeing as he's attached to Imperial Center and we're a Sector Fleet on the Outer Rim). If we were an organic, we'd likely persuade him to join our cause.
    But we're a droid.

Offer Captain Tanner to stay here in Procca Major, help Redspire City keep the Exigency troops from getting out of hand, and repairing the Counterpoint and the Ravenous, until the war ends or he gets a communique from Imperial Center ordering him to come back.

Your chief engineer thinks bringing either the Counterpoint or Stone Wolf into a fight before a major overhaul would be something crazy enough that only you'd attempt. The Stone Wolf would be slightly easier to command in battle with its bridge still intact.

He's sending people to purge the Oracle. The Hierarch is still seriously undermanned but in much better shape. Those two ships are your strongest assets at the moment.

    Cloaking device...?!

The important thing to remember about cloaks here is that while you can't see them, they can't see you either. It sucks as a weapon for an ambush but if it's just something wanting to get away, it can go anywhere in short order, even if it doesn't jump to hyperspace... it can slow-boat a safe distance away, and then jump.

Try to look for the wake of a ship, if there's any way to scan for it.

Have the computer system on the Oracle on high alert and don't accept handshakes from the beacon.

You uplink with the probe droid. The bandwidth is limited. From what you can tell, the beacon is receiving a message from Dantus, but due to its infected state, cannot relay the message. It's performing the backup procedure of approaching the nearest friendly warship to deliver the message manually.

Amazingly the 50m diameter beacon does possess some sort of cloaking device.
    >> Darth not-appearing-in-this-game !jxrVRQy2To 10/14/10(Thu)19:08 No.12444937
The beacon has received a transmission from Dantus intended for the ESD Oracle. An "Admiral Sarn" wishes to speak to Admiral Lethridge. You haven't had the chance to make a holoscan of Lethridge but you did speak to her at length. You could believably fake the codes and her voice in a sound only transmission, or ignore the request for now. The fact that anyone is sending you a message probably means they were able to avoid L+ infection at least temporarily. Ignoring the message could cause them to send someone to check up on the system, but taking the message and letting slip the truth will definitely cause them to send someone. What do you do?

Now that it's relaying the transmission the beacon has stopped moving. You can redirect it to another location but it no longer appears to be posing a threat. You could easily modify the signal you transmit to make it appear to originate from any ship in the fleet, regardless of where the beacon is located.

Sarn pauses, perhaps expecting you to fill in some other detail. When it becomes obvious you've finished speaking, he replies.

"I see. Unfortunate. Central command would have preferred securing the ship intact. Did you capture the defector or determine how it was able to evade Leviathan? The virus has reached threat level 6 ahead of our estimates. You know how crucial the information aboard that ship can be, especially now.

You scan the Exigency databases for reference to "threat levels". Their government uses a logarithmic scale to measure the material impact of potential disasters. Level 6 is any catastrophe potentially beyond their government's ability to address. Clearly the Exigency fleet knows what's happened in their home systems and are worried.

Excellent. Transmit the program immediately. One of our communication ships was already infected by a transmissions from the home systems. We've initiated quarantine, but Leviathan is adapting a lot faster than we can analyze, much less counter. Colonel Yularen is enjoying his 'I told you so's far too much. Okay, great. I just remember a couple of threads back, OP mentioned that either giving our side the cure of infecting the Exigency were mutually exclusive things, so I'm looking for a way that we can still give the Exigency a hard time while restoring any remains of our side to full functionality.

Also, possibly once this war is decided, offer to upload the cure to the holonet. Hopefully, by this time we'll have successfully reconstructed the original spy virus. We'll certainly upload the real cure, but now with the spy virus tagging along, so that now ships might be cured but we'll have all kinds of information on them.

Is there any way for us to transmit the L+ virus ourselves into the Exigency ships?

Perhaps we could use the beacon to deliver the virus. Come out of hyperspace, activate the cloak while moving towards the ESD Terror, and open up a communications channel to infect their systems.
If they don't know that the beacon is there, they won't know where to look for it.

The Leviathan kill codes works against all versions of the virus. You have different inoculation codes that protect against different versions of the virus, but those are only any good if they're installed on an uninfected computer. You might be able to write a version of the kill code that will self delete after it cleans a system. Sending it into the field would be risky, just like everything else you're doing.

Sending the probe will depend on the Exigency not being able to track their own cloaked ships. It's possible, but not certain.

You are lead to engineering, close to the droid brain. The ship holds a molecular furnace. Usually the furnace would be run by prisoners. This ship has modified to refine raw materials from a nearby planetoid and assembling its own "helper" droids.

While uploading your somewhat threadbare music collection, you also take the chance to download a copy of the logs, an unobtrusive process.

As you suspected the ship was stranded in this system some 8 years ago. The officers attempt to override the navicomp restrictions but gave up and fled on shuttles, stranding the prisoners. One of them managed to connect with the droid brain, and through a great deal of ad hoc modifications, killed the rest of the crew and automated the ship to a great degree. However he was still unable to start the hyperdrives on the factory ship or any other craft the ship built. He finally headed to Arah 87 days ago at sublight speeds on a ship that could only hold a month's worth of supplies.

You are a long way away from Aeten, but the ship was tricked to believe it had reached its destination so that it would activate the molecular furnace.

They already have a commando team down on Dantus attempting to bring the planetary shield down. As soon as that shield goes down, Dantus will surrender.

Your intrusion programs slices through the droid brain like a vibroknife through, well, through a droid brain. Everything is going well. Cade lets out a fair approximation of a scream. Strange it had so much difficulty singing.

The racket dies down eventually. A new voice echoes across the halls.

"Hello sons o' bitches. The name's Talon Karrde. That's prisoner 24808 to you. I knew you bastards would try to get back your ship one day. Sorry I couldn't be there the see the looks on your faces, but do stay and enjoy the show. See you in hell."

The picture is of the man is replaced by a handy display of the furnace power levels.

You hear Major Madine's voice over the comms. "We have a situation, Captain. I'm sending my people to the flight deck. We could try to save the ship by jettisoning aft from the command deck, but it'll be a long shot."

You could also try to shut down the overload through what's left of the computer, also a long shot. Or as always, try something else.

there's some food for thought. Did we agree previously to use the ISD Stone Wolf as opposed to, say, the Oracle? I wasn't here, but I'd like to voice a point of opposition. Since we're going to be siege-breaking, a Tector's increased ventral armor as well as its focus on ship-to-ship combat make it superior to any of our other vessels as a vanguard unit. We should at least put a modicum of effort into getting it into ready shape, either as a lead combat unit or, if still undermanned, as a sort of battering ram

And either way, you killed an innocent AI. I mean seriously. FARLANDER is a droid/AI. Yeah, I'm soooooo sure he agrees with your meatbag outlook on Droids being expendable. Just because he was designed to be doesn't mean he necessarily likes it.

You would have had a 78% chance of success if Karrde had not be a very bitter man who had nothing better to do than brood over revenge for 8 years. You might have caught Karrde's sabotage if you had convinced the droid to lower its guard. Then again, you might have not. Too late to think about that in any case.

    >>12446653
Rushing to the flight deck would be the easiest escape route. You'll lose the ship, but you and most of the crew should survive.

Attempting to detach the power generators from the command deck with Madine has less odds of success but is not impossible. If you fail you'll be somewhat shielded from the overload and might survive in the vacuum. If you succeed the ship will need major repairs but will still be recoverable.

Trying to overcome the hardware damage AND sabotage program to regain control of the ship will be the most difficult of all, and if you fail you're going down with the ship. But if you succeed you could save everything.

That's the difference between good judgment and "Oh noes, I made one mistake! I AM NOT WORTHY!" Just because our outlook isn't to be a cliched evil AI doesn't mean that we're suddenly of a mind to consider all AIs to be expendable. A sentient being is a sentient being, organic or otherwise.

Continuing as another character, possibly from another side could work though. But that's just my two cents.

So you're unwilling to admit that characters can change and adapt to situations to prolong their lives/existence? The point of this is to have fun, which, if the quest ends because we die, is very hard to do. If you can only have fun with a character who is so rigidly tied to one ideal and experiences no change or character growth, well, fine. Who am I to tell you what to like? But when what you're doing ends the fun for the rest of us, then you've gone too far.

But 4-8C Farlander is specifically a droid with adaptive programming that still adheres to the Imperial Creed via both his hard-coded programming and through personal choice.
As such, he would view Cade as both a danger and an embarrassment. A danger, because it has shown a willingness to kill anyone that threatens it or its father, and is not acting as an Imperial droid should and relinquishing control to an Imperial authority figure. And as an embarrassment, as a droid should not be this simple-minded.

Also, while I agree that 1 opinion shouldn't be enough to dictate actions, others did not come together to vote down my suggestion until well after the gambit was in play.

Who are you to say how he would view him? You are not Farlander. You do not get to decide by yourself how he chooses to see things, even if your choice of having him be a loyal Imperial was chosen in the first thread. You are seriously giving yourself and your views far too much credit and weight. A character in a quest is defined by his actions and the amalgamation of everyone's opinions in the thread, not just you. If some of us say that he is capable of change and that he might act differently than how you see him, it's just as valid as your opinion.

At least I've been vindicated and proven right, as shown by your actions ending the quest. You are left without a foot or any appendage at all to stand on.

As you said, your opinion has just as much weight as mine when it comes to deciding the actions of a main character. But your choices and opinions didn't get chosen, while mine did. Then by your argument, that the character of Farlander is an amalgamation of the choices made by the players, my opinion of Cade and the decision to wipe him was Farlander's choice.

If you had wanted Farlander to survive so badly, or for the quest to continue on so much, then why didn't you vote for one of the safer options, like running to the flight deck or going to the command deck?

Altered Beast aside, I'll be disappointed as fuck if it turns out we have a backup copy of ourselves floating around after we just went into musings on our mortality in this very thread and, more importantly, our actions had serious consequences for us.

A new character would be fuckawesome though, because I love the quest. I just don't want to see it cheapened by lowering the stakes.

We already lost the factory ship, and lost Farlander.
Even if his backup were to be activated, it's already been said that his droid brain is unique to the Farlander Project, which was shutdown. So we might have used 1 continue in the form of a second Farlander droid, but that's all we get.

If it's made sufficiently apparent that this was a one-time only resurrection, I think it could work just as well to reinforce the main character's mortality. Because now we KNOW there's no more backups, and if we screw it up again, there's no more continues left.
And now that we know that the DM is willing to kill and end the quest if things go badly for the main character, then players will be far more careful and conservative in their choices.

For example, Zerg Quest has had many instances of disastrous consequences for the players, and though their Cerebrate never died, they are now very careful in their choices and I don't believe that the tension is diminished any.

But would it? Would it really invite the players to continue to be reckless and brash, taking unnecessary risks?
Or would it make them take it more slowly and carefully?

I think seeing their character's own mortality, coming face-to-face with the fact that the main character can actually die, will make people more likely to be careful than to become nearly-suicidal and confident in their immortality.

For all of the people decrying Farlander hacking into the child-droid brain and shutting it down, I would like to point out that this droid was originally an Imperial Factory Ship droid whose purpose was to enslave and work to death its prisoners.
Its current state is likely the result of tampering by Karrde, who butchered the original droid's programming into submission.
Can you imagine what it must have been like, having one of your own prisoners come up to you, open up the hatch to your brain, and not only make you serve him, but to love him as a father?

    Was Madine our XO?
Come to think of it, who was our "second-in-command"?
It would be pretty awesome to continue the quest from there. Now we not only have the colossal difficulty of the issues farlander was dealing with, but now we don't have a super droid brain to help us. We're just a normal, sentient creature trying to do his/her best with what we've got, and having to rely on our luck to see us through.

Stepping back the abilities to human-level would certainly add some pressure, and probably cost us much in terms of the story/campaign, which would provide some real consequences beyond just farlanders' death.

One of the reasons I like Farlander so much is because it turned the Imperial Ideal on its head, that a droid could follow it better than a human could. It's like Grand Admiral Thrawn; and alien able to command the loyalty of his Imperial troops not in spite of Imperial creed, but because of it.
