You look at the outpost, it is manned by about 50 men, each wielding a broadsword and a short-bow and in chain-mail. near the center of it is a large crystal, it is slowly pulsing, in time with the sand in an hourglass on a pedestal next to it. After about 30 minutes the crystal emits a bright flash, and one of the men flips the hourglass back over. Taking these outposts will allow you to have total surprise on your enemies in the re-claimed ruins, but how will you time this assault when the outposts are half a days march from each other in ideal conditions?

As I recall, the idea last session seemed to be to bypass most of the outposts using the tunnel network, and only take down the last one via an attack from their rear.

The flashing crystal is a new thing though that wasn't mentioned last time.
Is it a beacon used to stay in communication with the next outpost?

from what you can tell, its a signal flare, an arcane lighthouse really. Khalless must have robbed the Duchy blind of arcane items to have things like this though.

    >your are at the side tunnel near the first outpost
    >> Anonymous 10/20/10(Wed)20:32 No.12516818
Okay, so the signal must be to indicate that all is well. The window of opportunity seems to be 30 minutes, and if all that is needed is to keep the signal going is to turn the hourglass over when time is up, then it should only need 2 or 3 men working in shifts to keep it going.
I would prefer to try eliminating each of these outposts one by one, and keeping up the appearance that nothing is wrong, preventing reinforcements from arriving during our main assault.
But that goes against the general consensus from last time.
We'll need to get some consensus, whether to stick to the battle plan from last session or come up with a new one.

If I'm reading the tunnel map right, we should be able to hit the 1st, 3rd, and 4th posts using flanking attacks.
Or we could avoid them all entirely, meaning we don't fight 200 soldiers and definitely maintain surprise, but will have to contend with at least 50 enemy soldiers coming in to reinforce the enemy base camp attacking our rear during the main fight.

    You won't regret it....I don't think.

I say we bypass them only to come out in between the middle two. We have how long before the Ruins we are heading towards is notified exactly again? I recall about a 6 days. I'm not sure. We COULD do a coordinated attack that is us hitting each outpost at the same time then regrouping at the last one. However, that could be dangerous because we would be splitting up.

I see no reason not to take them. It'll let us move faster along the tunnels with the carts, and in the worst case scenario where we have to retreat, we don't have to worry about our rear and we might be able to use these barricades for ourselves. Plus, we can grab some of those nifty signals.

Not these items but it will be a nice bonus. In terms of taking the outposts, we need to do it with speed. Send our scouts/rangers/hunters to the further outposts while we hit the first with the mercs and then crush the one we cannot hit via side tunnels.

How long would it take to set up an attack on barricades 1, 3 and 4 at once? If it doesn't take too long, it might be worth doing that. We also might want to send some men further up the side tunnels to make sure no messengers get a message back to the main camp.

Send scouts/rangers/hunters. They're trained in sneaky, and can fight well. Time attacks to go off immediately after the next pulse, and for our heavy units to bumrush the #2outpost say 15 minutes after that. Or as soon as outpost #1. Is capped.

After that,we leave a squad of peasant archers at each beacon, and everyone else reforms at the last outpost for our assault.

The only worry I have in taking these barricades is that earlier it was mentioned the forces that will be sent to check up on the supply caravan could come from either ruins. Logically to me, it seems more likely the caravan would come from the ruins where it was sent, since they'd be the only ones who know it hasn't returned but I believe an older thread said it could be from either. If we take the barricades, we won't be able to stop the new force from alerting the ruins if they come from the one we are about to attack.

Alternatively, I would suggest when we take #2, we use one of the mercenary units to try to get in close for a surprise attack.

With a nod to Uurist the detachment you are with descend upon the outpost as if you were vengeful ghosts. Expertly placed crossbow bolts singing through your units ranks to kill any enemies before they can fire into the Warlords. As you charge , spear and kite shield ready you can almost feel each footfall on the stone. You vault over the low wall between the side path and the main outpost; your ferreted spearhead passing through the mail of the unlucky mercenary you chose as if it were butter, killing the man before you land. You try to pull back on your spear, but don't use enough force and it sticks on a bone, you watch the battle end around you before it begins overwhelming force and surprise leading to a complete slaughter, bloodless on your side. You finally pull your new spear free, stumbling forward and knocking over the hourglass as it bottoms out. Luckily your reflexes are good, you catch it on the inside of your shield, roll the glass flinging it up into the air, catching it and placing it on the pedestal. "Tripped a bit there commander?" Uurist asks, arching an eyebrow.

    >will you go with the mercs to the second outpost, or just send them ahead... the signal for the charge will be the other mercs spotting their hired comrades inside the outpost so...

Approaching the tent, you see Finian sitting up, looking confused "Commander, what happened to me? how long have I been out?" the dwarf asks.

"You were out of controll in the last battle, you charged into a rather large group of enemies in your grief-filled rage and got yourself severly injured. Your battalion is almost universally in a state of depression, were you not so severely injured and emotionally distraught I would feel inclined to punish you. However as it is I feel you need something to take your mind off of your current misfortune in your personal life. I have a piece of meteorite ore for you, feel free to do with it as you wish." you reply curtly, one of the repaired sections of your mail catching on an older part of the coat as you hand the reclining dwarf the piece of ore.

"Commander, I... I feel that I should lead my men in the next battle. Please, give me a chance to redeem my actions." The dwarf pleads, his eyes affixed on the ore.

"We will discuss this once my preparations for the battle are complete, at the front-most enemy outpost. Until then enjoy your ore and rest, you most likely still need it." At that you salute Finian and move to the front of Uurists unit again. By the time you reach eyeshot of the outpost, you can see your men already mingled with the enemy, every few minutes the signal blinking thrice in rapid succession. At your signal, all three units involved in this assault will charge.

With a mighty bellow you announce the charge, and propel yourself forward, bounding off several larger rocks to vault into the outpost, driving your spear through a pair of enemy mercenaries as the enemy mercenaries who had crossbows drawn are cut down by your Freeblades. You pull your spear free of the slain men, nearly beheading another mercenary on the back-swing; before plunging it into another mercenaries chest. With a mighty roar you flick the impaled corpse into another foe, before leaping on him yourself, decapitating him with the bottom of the kite shield strapped to your left arm. As you rise the 65th is reaching the outpost as the Myrmidons cut down the last fleeing enemy.

We should attack to the right first. It will shorten the distance we need to traverse the calthrops, and more importantly it means that after a short distance we will be out of the firing line of the left hand garrison. The right hand one will block fire. Not only that, but there will be far fewer arrow slots on the right one firing at us too, since we will be going to the side of it rather than across the front.

After we take out the one on the right we can sweep into the left from behind, mostly avoiding the rain of arrows. These defenses are poorly constructed.

The rest of Garus' battalion should aim to serve as a shield from the oncoming arrow fire I think. To clear the fortifications, we should send in the light infantry while the rest of our men work to just get inside the ruins and not in that death trap. If necessary, Cornelius or one of our scout units can help the light infantry clear the fortifications. Might be worth trying to gather the caltrops for our own defence. I think the warlords should be our shock, shielding themselves behind the armored cart. Behind them should be the remnants of the legion, testudoed up. This combined with the shields on the dwarves should keep losses minimal.

I don't believe the bear cavalry should be used as a spearhead because of all the possible archer fire. They should follow in after engagement so they don't get slammed by archer fire, only some slight peppering from the left before ducking behind the shielding walls of the right hand fortification.

With a quick nod of your head, Garus and his best men push the Battle-wagons forwards, screaming at the top of their lungs, and reaching a rather impressive speed. Caltrops fly out of their way as they plow through them, and then the wagons slam into the fortification. They strike the stone with such force that the fortifications grow several large cracks in their stone base. You see the palisade on top fall apart as well, but not completely; the impact knocks down both the human bowmen inside the fortifications, and the Lacertan Skirmishers on top of it. Off to your right you hear Uursan roaring as Jayne directs her wing around behind the first fortification. Directly ahead of you stands a block of duchy Heavy Swordsdwarfs, in full plate armor, wielding long thin zweihanders, with oversized triangular gauntlets on their fists. You and Collin are pushed along with the charging Warlords towards this unit, you figure you have enough time to shout one command before you are in combat.

You shout for the ranged units to open fire on the Duchy light infantry and for your legionaries to get their asses to the center before the melee is upon you. Shield strapped to your arm you move to attack the nearest dwarf, your spear blances off of his gauntlet, hard, the dwarf falls back with the momentum and the warriour behind him steps up expecting to fight, instead he takes a spear through the throat you had intended for his comrade. the looser formation these dwarfs are in makes sense now; you think to yourself as you catch a blow on your shield, then trip the dwarf before he can move to the back of the unit. You run your spear into his gut, pull the weapon out and dodge the next strike in one fluid motion as you continue to analyze their tactic. as one dwarf loses his momentum or is wounded, he falls to the back of the unit, allowing a fresh dwarf to take his place. Satisfied with your appraisal you look around the battlefield, a spray of bolts issues forth from the scouts and rangers, Sansa's repeating bow downing several Lacerta, the rest of the ranged dwarves focusing on the charging Light Dwarves.

In the center of the melee you are in you can see Colin squaring off against the leader of this unit, their blades nearly a blur of activity, a circle of corpses surrounding them, and the rest of the fighters giving the pair a wide berth. You hear the rest of your maniple approaching as you see a bright flash emit from the far fortification for a brief moment, all to the deranged tempo of arrows burrying themselves into the shields of a tetsudo, accented by javelins piercing through the shields to slay the shields bearer.

As the rest of your batalions make their way through the mouth of the ruins you can hear the sounds of alarm going up throught the enemy camps. with a trio of quick jabs you kill two enemies and wound another, but any further attacks are halted as you are forced to deflect a blow on your shield again. You look over to Collin, who is sweating profusely now, both he and his opponent begining to catch blows on their blades, Collins footwork thrown off by his lack of armor and the increased necessity of dodging, it is obvious that the first to land a blow in that fight will be the victor. Gaius re-positiones his tetsudo as Cornelius, and Blackbird follow Jaynes path behind you, Arthurias' freeblades running in attempt to keep up.

The sounds of slaughter can be heard from the inside of the rightmost fortification, the weakend structure shaking the Skirmishers back to the ground as the mighty Uursan and their riders inadvertently hit the walls. The barrages of ranged weapons fire continue, as the light Duchy battalion moves to flank your Warlords.

Why aren't the 196th protecting our flank? God damn it, Gaius. Get over there.

Also maybe we should go help Colin? Or do dwarves do that whole single combat to the death thing?

Command roll. Have Jayne move out to flank the heavy dorfs now and have the infantry continue to move past the fortification and move in to mop up the right fortification. Have the 196th meet the light dorfs before they can flank the warlords while the archers pepper the light infantry more.

    >>12520341
I think the Uursan should make sure that they've broken the guys before disengaging. Retreating while still engaged is a good way to get killed. Besides, We have fast troops coming around too.
    >> Anonymous 10/21/10(Thu)02:43 No.12520387
Okay, I have a question. How did these guys get formed up into battle ranks so fast? This was a complete surprise assault. I assumed it would be a huge rout.

We're never going to be able to take 2000+ troops if we have to play meatgrinder with them. Especially when some of them are, apparently, qualitatively equal to highly trained imperial armies judging by the dwarves we are fighting right now.

You continue to wade through the enemy dwarves, trying to keep your blows as efficient as possible, knowing there is a long fight ahead of you. You look off to your right in enough time to see Collin knock his foes blade aside, take off the right arm on the back-swing, the run his blade through the captains gut. The Highland dwarf steps over his dying foe and shouts "TAKE THAT YE DUCHY BASTARDS!!!" before throwing himself into the suddenly demoralized swordsmen.

"Beat'em back lads!!" Uurist shouts, and the whole formation of Warlords begins advancing as they smash and cleave, coating their arms and armor in gore. To your left Gaius orders his men to leave the Tetsudo and charge with expert timing, intercepting the Duchy light infantry just as they are about to hit your now moving flank. You hear Jayne shout something about enemy reinforcements coming from the right entrance to the courtyard as you give a dwarf a third eye-socket where his forehead was.

A loud roar announces the Orks reaching, and climbing up the fortifications to your right to meet the Lacerta, their odds arent good in your opinion, but at least there will be that many less javelins headed your way to worry about.

454th into the Lacerta. Either the Orks or the Legionnaires will catch them from behind, and as glass cannons they should be hideously punished by such a pincer movement. Jayne knows what she is doing, we will just have to trust her judgement.

Everything else looks good. Our rangers and scouts should probably start moving up the center.

    >gah, I'm gettin tired as well here. I think I'll call it for tonight and be back at about 8pm thursday

As you thrust your spear into another dwarfs chest, it catches on his armor, after two good yanks, one nearly dislocating your shoulder as your armor is struck as you pull; the second causing you to get a nice new gash along your left side, you abandon the weapon in the corpse, drawing your blade and wading back into combat. You try to shout out for the Neshtifield blades to move in to aid the orks, but a solid blow to your helmet renders the shout indecipherable, the orders cascade away from what you want from there, the scouts advancing in one direction, the rangers staying put, the hunters picking their way through the caltrops to get better shots at the other half of the skirmishers. Cursing yourself inwardly you hack down another dwarf.

The 454th didn't charge to support the orcs? With such high training you would think they would be able to do that without orders.
