    >locked, cocked and ready to rock!

The battle swirls around you, the 98th warlords, Collin and yourself puch a group of heavy duchy swordsmen back towards the unassailed fortification, the enemy near their breaking point. Off to your left Garus' and his Legionary battalion are shredding through a unit of Duchy light infantry; the lattes baradiches while no doubt devastating against light infantry, individuals fighting as a group and cavalry are all but useless against the heavily armored, highly trained Imperial soldiers. To your right you can hear Blackbirdj cussing and cursing at the Ork warriors, the untrained undisciplined mob being shredded by the slightly larger lacertan skirmishers. Further to your right, Jayne is backing her wing back into the listing fortification, and Cornelius is bracing his men to recieve a charge, from what you cannot see at this angle.

    >battle map inbound, roll for combat, and if you decide to issue any commands roll for that as well. Laelith, Scaly, Fluffy are waiting your command to enter the fray, the scrub archers are at the last outpost yet, send a runner if you want them

At first you thought the form of these swordsdwarfs was simple, but after having an old hole in your chainmail re-opened, and another gash left on your right thigh you realize just how wrong you are. Of course the dwarf who re-opened your mail shirt lost his head, and the one who opened your thigh is now on the ground bleeding out. Seeing their commander getting opened up has no good effects on the dwarves of the 98th, but they fight on nonetheless, continuing to batter their once mighty foes back. You shout to your mercenary battalions, but a blow to your helmet confuses your words, and while the Blackmoore freeblades DO charge your target for them, the Neshtefield Mymidons stop short when they realize they will be charging through a freshly opened firing lane.

You lay into the flagging dwarves with a vengeance, your meteorite blade piercing weak spots in the Duchy infantries armor left and right, your face constantly bombarded by the spray of hot blood. You ruin an enemies sword, cleaving its hilt from the blade with the force of your blow, carrying through to put your blade through one cheek, then the other; a spray of blood and teeth trailing the blade as you prepare to behead the unfortunate with a backstroke. Before you land the blow, you notice the dwarves kneeling in surrender, dropping your arms; should you behead this dwarf it will be a signal to slaughter the unit, show mercy and they will be taken prisoner. To your right the 196th continue their butchers work, as do the blackmoore freeblades to your left. You hear a primal roar from the same direction, and see two units of Lacertan Berserkers charging down the pathway, one makes contact with Cornelius and his men, the other angling towards the back of the surrendering dwarves. Behind you the ranged engagement continues, and you can hear Laelith announce her arrival with a gout of flame into the remaining caltrops.

    >botch used... at least you got your orders off
You shout out to Sansa and Aurelius to get these prisoners out of the way before signaling to Uurist and his men to meet the Berserkers had on; before promptly tripping on a corpse and having the whole unit rush past you and into the berserkers, which turns out to be a rather messy affair. You hear Laelith scream in pleasure as she sends three of the Eternal Torches burning wildly out of control, immolating more than a few and smashing their morale. You scream at Aaryn to get his men moving to clear out the other fortification, and order Jayne to hit the other group of berserkers in their flank, which she does with quite a bit of zeal. As the battle rages on around you, you suddenly need to ponder where you are needed the most.

I'm patently shocked that these rag-tag troops with no nationalistic type loyalty hold together. I mean, in reality 50% losses meant a well disciplined unit was shattered way past the point of recovery. Even 30% losses on gallic barbarians meant they were probably broken. That's 3 out of every 10 men dead or dying.

Rome was unique in that they had "espirit de corps" as it was later known. Most armies in that period broke pretty early into the fight.

Not that I'm saying it's bad the way it is, but we're not going to have any campaign staying power with losses like these. Modern militaries can only sustain heavy losses because of rapid reinforcement and huge long-distance supply trains. Even then, troops are rotated out of combat on a 50/50 basis to preserve morale and reinforce the units.

It's apparent the rebel's leader is a heavily charismatic type, he can make veteran mercenary units "volunteer" for extended service simply by hanging around him for a couple weeks. Magic is probably involved and our enemies should be considered fanatical cultists that will fight until all hope is lost far beyond normal morale, especially his elite troops like the Lacertans.
    >> Anonymous 10/21/10(Thu)22:39 No.12528924
    >>12528885
That's a good point, I suppose this is an exceptional situation. I was expecting to be able to beat his army mostly because of superior morale and discipline, though. If they hold together and can inflict losses like these on our legions... I'm not liking our chances at all. We'll probably wind up losing 1/4 of our most elite troops (warlords, legions, and cavalry) in this fight. And it's not even the majority of his forces.
    >> Anonymous 10/21/10(Thu)22:42 No.12528954
Question, what are the combat and command rolls for? Is combat for just personal combat or all combat with all units? And is command just commands we give or does it impact the entire army's morale/movement/combat effectiveness?
    >> Anonymous 10/21/10(Thu)22:46 No.12528985
I don't know if it's that bad. These numbers are probably going to be pumped back up after the fight. Medical tech was a roman advantage too so we are probably just looking at the number of men still in fighting shape rather than ones still alive.

You shout out to have a runner sent to get the scrub archers, and for some of the less seriously wounded men to watch your new prisoners here. As you pull your spear from the corpse you left it in, you see Laelith raise her arms as if in prayer, before sweeping them out like some mad symphonic director, raising them up again, arms at her ears; the flames that she started before now enveloping the fortification, while it isnt likely that ALL of the men manning the blockhouse are dead, none will be alive by the time the magical blaze subsides. Aaryns men skid to a halt mere feet from the inferno to a chorus of curses as Laelith collapses to her knees, head down, panting and sweating profusely; after that much effort she will not be of much use again for quite a while... she must have heard the rumors about the torture chambers of the DragonBone Palace then.

You hurl yourself back into the melee as the front of Jaynes cavalry wing pierces the loose formation of berserkers far side. You immidiatly fall into a deadly dance, avoiding obsidian greatblades, thrusting your spear with deadly precision, every thrust cleaving a joint, opening a chest or splitting tendons, you feel invincible as you carve a bloody swath through the berzerkers, untouched by their massive weapons.

Ahead of him Jayne is wheeling her wing around for another run through the berzerkers as you continue your fighting, a few blows to your shield knock you back to reality, and a rather nasty kick to your shin reminds you that these are warriors bred you are fighting, even if you are winning. As the Myrmidons hammer into the berzerkers they simply cry out in glee, to filled with rage and bloodlust to care about their situation yet. The 99th moves into a firing position and begin killing off the fleeing Duchy infantry, Gais' men are catching their collective breaths now that they are unengaged, the dwarves aren't showing the signs of exhaustion yet, but they have a higher endurance then men.

"A PALTRY 4 BATALIONS AND THE BLACK DISCIPLES!?!?!?!" Blackbird shouts as if insulted, while he is doing an excellent job of energizing his orks, he isnt doing you any favors. You attempt to extract yourself from the melee swirling about you, only to take a gash to your recently recovered shoulder and be knocked to the ground. your spear a few feet ahead of you, you draw your gladius again, and kill the offending Lacerta before you rise, and are drawn right back into the melee, blood seeping from your wound. The substitute captain of the 50th scouts has the unit form a firing line, in preparation for the inevitable charge, and Jayne is forming her cavalry into a wedge. Gaius and Kyria are making short work of gathering your wounded and enemy prisoners, their men already looking better rested for the light labor, and the berzerkers are quickly being dismantled by flank charges.

You feel a tremor shoot through the ground, and its not just from the blade your caught on your shield, although the blow does send spikes of pain running down your injured arm. Your target is approaching. Gaius leads his men in a rather complex shortening and lengthening wheel, there is much swearing, but he manages a flank charge. Jaynes Uursan are pawing the ground and howling in rage at the approaching enemy reinforcements, and Aurelius is cursing at his men to move faster. Kyria isn't cursing, but leading by example, running at least 10 feet ahead of her men as they attempt to set up another firing position at the mouth of the corridor your foes are approaching down.

The remaining Berzerkers are handily crushed, and after more than a little shouting you are able to set your maniple in a good position to recieve this charge.

In the center is Khaless and his Black Disciples, to either side a batallion of Duchy Heavy Zweihanders, and a mercenary light infantry outside that. You figure you have enough time to have your wounds dressed in the field, and maybe change armor before the charge hits. "Commander" Laelith interjects "If you wish I could sear your wounds shut, healing fire was not amongst the powers I was gifted with, but disowned by the Sucubus Queen I may be able to use it if you wish..."

You summon Collin over to you after you strip off your even more battered chainmail "Why arent you in any armor? if you want you can have your pick of what the dead no longer need, and I can see that you get a suit if you wish." you state bluntly, as Laelith, her face scrunched in concentration stares into her flame, it moves from a blazing furious yellow to a warm low red. You strip off your pants as well, Collin seems unfazed by the sight of his commander in his smallclothes as he replies "Thank'ye fer offerin, but a kilt an me shirt are nearly to damned hot'in a battle as it'is. My sword's all the protection Ai need. Trained for a hun'rd years'ta make it as much'a part'a me as my cock, so it works fine." he replies, walking back to the warlords. You can feel more than a few sets of eyes on you as the indentured men in your supply element bring forth your crimson platemail.

As Laeliths fire begins to envelop your wounds, you feel them heating up, and you can feel that heat drawing blood through the veins near the wounds. The blaze pulls your skin together, and you can feel your body doing its best to grow the skin back to protect your muscles from the excessive heat, despite the lack of burning. When Laelith stands you can feel the wounds sealed; though you can tell that if your are careless they will tear back open. Within a few moments you have been strapped into your armor, and saunter your way to the front of the 98th warlords. You find yourself staring down two blocks of humans in chailnmail, one group wielding broadswords and circleshields, the other battleaxes. Behind them the Black disciples and Duchy Zweihanders. They will be charging you any moment.

We should aim for the lizards first with arrows. They are lightly armored and pack a mighty punch.

Do we get, like, feats or something based on the stuff we do? That would be cool. Like an epic leadership feat ingame would give us the option to choose the higher of the two rolls for our command after the fact, and we would be regarded as a hero. Or maybe the fact we've stuck ourselves in the thickest fighting every time gives us an inspiring reputation that increases morale of the unit we are in and word of our skill in combat will spread among the legions? Maybe three botches in a row would give us a "Victory from the Jaws of Defeat" feat where we get an extra reroll. Things like that. Just food for thought.

A torrent of arrowfire greets the charging enemies, and the mercenaries smash ineffectually against your legionaries phalanx. The back portion of the enemy charge advances slowly, taking the arrows mostly, although the Black Disciples are intercepted by the frenzied remains of your Ork Warriors, though Blackbird hangs back. You dont realize why until you looc closer at the approaching Lacerta, they are some of the largest you have ever seen, all in black warpaint, at first you thought them somehow posesed, with their oversized claws, too-bulky forearms and abnormally shaped heads, crowned by long black horns. But as the Orks reach the ordered mob, you realize it is obsidian armor, glistening in orks blood it looks incredibly sinister. You would scarce call it a fight in fact. As one of the orks is lifted up and flensed above a ravenous Lacerta Blackbird retreats back towards your lines, half laughing, half glowering.

Warrior is the swap, you get the better combat roll, and a slight bonus to combat.

Level-headed is a bonus to commanding when in combat.

you will have a chance to get more of these as time passes and I see fit; depending on what situations arise

Warrior seems way better out of those two, since if we aren't in combat we get no bonus from either but if we are in combat Warrior can help both stats with the switching.

Level headed sounds cooler in my opinion. I think we try to be more of a level headed commander than a warrior commander, to be honest. Warrior is simply a better ability.

So, like we can only swap the rolls once?

Not worth it then, at all. Maybe if it let us auto-1 a roll at will some time in our career. Maybe. But the perm bonus is better. Level Headed gets my vote.

Warrior is a permanent -5 to combat rolls, level headed is the same for commanding from a fight. with a 13/97 split for the swap one either your gettin your shit rocked, or your men are gonna do whatever seems best to their captains (or lack thereof)
    >> Anonymous 10/22/10(Fri)02:39 No.12531069
Have Laelith explode those elementalists if she can. Otherwise now would probably be a good time to explode the torches of the elites, so they start freezing in the middle of combat.

Will this have any effect on us in the future beyond the numbers? Because if it's a roleplay thing I vote levelheaded, because that's the longterm way I see Justinian going. If it's entirely a numbers thing then warrior, because combat rolls being bad has fucked us up way way worse than command rolls being bad.

"For Dengar!!!" you cry, hurling youself at Khaless, who floats several pieces of stone up to him, molding them into plates gloating a few inches from his bare chest. At the Same Moment Laelith causes the fire contained in several of the fires contained within the crystals around each of the Disciples necks, the explosions most certainly kill the wearers, but do a splendid job of blinding everyone near them, including you. Which is why you only barely manage to get your spear past the stone plates, leaving a nasty deep gash across the dwarfs chest, and a new hole in his arm. As Khaless backs away from your attack, collecting himself you notice that the battle would be a rather close affair were it not for Laeliths efforts. You begin to shout orders, but a trio of fist sized stones smack into your new helmet, drowning out your words and knocking you back a few steps, turning to look, you see a pair of wicked looking obsidian blades in your foes hands.

To your left, the 50th has fallen back, and the Freeblades are trying their best to take down the Duchy heavy infantry, but things arent looking very good for them.

To your right, Kyria has her battalion take one last, devastating, point blank volley at the Zweihanders, her men drawing their battleaxes just in time to meet the assault of the armored dwarves. To her left Jayne is thundering through the light infantry, driving a hard line to support Kyria. you can hear your bests approaching you, and Wulf shouting at his charges, trying damn hard to keep them in line in this battle.

The scream of steel on steal holds your attention on Jaynes charge through the light mercenaries and into the Zweihanders for just a hare too long, as you find yourself on the ground with two obsidian blades in your shield arm, once again rendering it nearly useless, as the dwarf on top of you raises his blades to go for your head, a black blur slams into him, the aurachnospecs cracking stone plates, and reaching around them to snip and slice at any flesh that Fluffy can find. You rise, discarding your shield and drawing your sword as Khaless ends your respite by sending a rather large rock into your beasts thorax. "Keep your beasts out of this" the dwarf spits as the melee swirls around you and your foe.

The myrmidons are still stationary, confused by your alternating battle cries and orders, the rest of the battle continues on as before, although Kyria's dwarfs are setting another firing line so that they can fire into the Zweihanders as soon as the Freeblades are out of their way.
