    http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Engine_Heart

Engine Heart is a homebrew game I made a while ago, based in a Wall-E / Ray Bradbury-type setting where the humans are all gone and the robots are left running down into entropy. You're one of the robots. It's a pretty simple d10 pool system that allows for a lot of character customization. You can be pretty much anything from a six-inch cube to an android to a hulk the size of a vending machine (or possibly larger). No warbots, but I can supply houserules for guns on request.

Back in August some anons on /tg/ convinced me to self-publish it, which I did (link's on the wiki). You can download it for free; the print version is just a convenience for people who want hardcopies but don't want to print them out themselves. At some point there's gonna be a full-length collection of sandbox modules, but for now there's a 13-page introductory module that can be downloaded from the wiki.

Anyway, the black and white version is now on amazon as of today (check it out for yourself if you don't believe me!) which is pretty tits, and might actually lead to me making money off this.

So tl;dr I'm gonna be an internet millionaire with robots, and if you want to know anything else or request that something be statted I'll be around for a while.

Well... one of the things I like about the game is that it's pretty open-ended. There's no default setting, other than "all the humans are gone". I've heard of people playing EH games set on spaceships, distant planets, near planets, and the generic soft-apocalypse setting that the book fluff suggests.

So what your looking at now is. Hey at least people liked the idea enough to steal it.
Maybe people will think so highly of your work that they will decide that yes in fact you work deserves monetary reward.

Good luck though, I mean fuck this is the forum where people bumped like 10 threads over the course of a week to get a free scan of deathwatch. If they had spent a quarter of that time working they could have just used the extra cash to buy a copy.

Here's my take-home. Lulu takes a chunk out of my "profit", so that $2.64 is actually $1.90, and the $1.08 is more like $0.78.

Amazon takes its own cut, which is why I can't sell the color version on it. Since they can't cut up my penny profit, they just refuse to sell it.

So as you can see, I'm not really in this for the benjamins. I just like making stuff.

Is it weird that I'd like to see a scenario where a construction robot stumbles upon some old DnD books and tries to create his own little DnD world? In my head I see a party that is basically a Roomba with a wizard's hat and a taser for lightning, a rogue robot with a built in toolkit for traps, and a lifting type robot with a sword welded onto it fighting a crane modified with a dragon paint job, nonfunctional wings, and a flamethrower.

I might have to write something up then. I'd love the idea of the DM bot not really understanding quite how things work. Imagine a robot trying to recreate the idea of a saucy barmaid entirely from secondhand knowledge. Also races would be just welding on various ears and beards to the robots.

and ended up drafting the rules for real-world drones, which I eventually refined into the Engine Heart system. After that I just put it out for /tg/ to rip on, got some playtesters from the board and #suptg, refined it, put it out for public mockery, got some more playtesters, refined it, etc. etc. etc. For more than a year.

    Eventually I got it right.

Viral: what's the most fleshed-out campaign setting you've seen put together using your system?

Having a funny/ironic but also sad/lonely tone to the campaign like Wall-E would work really well, I imagine, but you could easily turn the world of a small robot into a Kafkaesque nightmare...

Also, what's the most combat-effective robot you've seen created in your system?

    oh..

    hmm..

this question sparked something in my brain.. and that thing is.. put it simply.. TRON.

All the required things are in place for a physical space Tron (rather then a virtual world). Insane or cruel (or simply corrupting) MASTER CONTROL PROGRAM AI lording over.. hmm.. perhaps an industrial complex.

Player-bots from the outside forced to go along with the Games or Tasks demanded of them, because it was simply unthinkable for a 'bot to come from "outside".. and such aberrant ideas will earn you a one-way trip to "Maintenance Ward"

    Can they escape?
    Can they free everyone?
Can they at least succeed in The Tasks and avoid "repair" in the Maintenance Ward

Somebody was posting on this board about a weekly EH game they run at their FLGS where the player bots were members of a planetary exploration team on a spaceship bound for some distant planet. However, they were only one pod of many, each overseen by a controlling AI. When the ship break down along the way... you know what they say about too many cooks.

    >Also, what's the most combat-effective robot you've seen created in your system?
Pic related, although it and its drone are dumb as hell and basically enslaved to the crunch-required omnipresent military bots. The fa/tg/uy who made thinks it's broken, but I think it's ok. Practically unplayable due to the constant mental enslavement thing and the no-intelligence thing, but still ok.

Plus, that cutting laser only has a reach of 50 cm.

    Waallll.. building robot.

    >2009
Over a period of three weeks (October 5th to October 27th), a robot by the name of R-O-B had established a wall, but not a typical wall. The “Pike Loop” gets it’s name from the special design, a forever going “loop”, formed by complex mathematical equations. Materially, the design is composed of bricks and glue, but digitally, it is a design made up of physical laws. They had programmed this robot to take the architectural design and create a close to exact form of the design in the field. R-O-B has been able to do what most robots can’t and surely what no human can do alone either. Like building a castle out of playing cards, R-O-B had staked up the bricks just right, so that the bricks are barely even touching. “Digital characteristics can enrich a material and thus influence its architectural expression and functionality,” says Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler, the researchers behind this particular work of art.

Though brick walls are very common in New York City, this design is particularly different. As seen in the picture, the forming of the bricks, gives a defendant 3-D look to it, and at sometimes, a wavy look. In my opinion, the formation looks like little skyscrapers waiting to be built on more and more.

    [ScienceDaily]

    >fourth linegran
and some people felt that the development of robots with sentience passing the Fourth Linegran Computational Complexity Quotient, or simply, the fourth linegran, was too risky. The matter would be settled in just under 5 years.

    >what's the difference between the deluxe pod version and the amazon one

The Deluxe Model is in color, the Economy Model is black and white, and the back covers are different. Otherwise they're exactly the same.

I just realized that I posted the character sheet for Radio instead of what I meant to post here >>12540314

This shows my earnings per book, but as I said in that other post:

    >that $2.64 is actually $1.90, and the $1.08 is more like $0.78.
    >Amazon takes its own cut, which is why I can't sell the color version on it. Since they can't divide up my penny profit, they just refuse to sell it.

So basically the printing costs of the color version are too high for Amazon to make any profit off of, meaning you have to go through Lulu for that. You're not missing a lot by getting the Economy Model.

In fact, lemme put up a side-by-side comparison to show you.

No, Amazon gets the order, tells Lulu, and then Lulu prints it and ships it out. Amazon takes a cut of the profit for the use of their website, but all I had to do was upload the initial pdf to Lulu.

And it's probably less than 66 cents. The publishers take a chunk out for the IRS (because I don't want Lulu to have any of my financial info). This ensures that Uncle Sam is getting his cut, but it's a lot more than what they would take out if I listed Viral Games on my tax returns.

But like I said, I'm not doing this for profit.

    Haha, the garbage dump!
Okay bear with me. The autostockers throw out anything over date. Non food articles that sit in the bargain bin too long get shipped back to the warehouse, where a frantic AI attempts to predict demand in a world without customers. Eventually articles are thrown out of the program and discarded.

So how do the garbage dumps look? Giant piles of unopened cans and mint condition original packaging toys and household items.

I am sure a society that leaves behind a functioning robot infrastructure recycles, so eventually the garbage gets separated into raw materials, melted down, and made into new toys to stock the display cases.

    >a functioning robot infrastructure

That's the big question, isn't it!

Outside, wild activity filled the yard. Many machines, their routines disrupted for the first time in years, seemed to have gone berserk. Unfortunately, those most easily disrupted were the ones with lowest brains, which generally belonged to large machines performing simple tasks. The seed distributor, to which the field-minder had recently been talking, lay face downward in the dust, not stirring; it had evidently been knocked down by the rotovator, which was now hooting its way wildly across a planted field. Several other machines plowed after it, trying to keep up.
"It would be safer for me if I climbed onto you, if you will permit it. I am easily overpowered," said the penner. Extending five arms, it hauled itself up the flanks of its new friend, settling on a ledge beside the weed-intake, twelve feet above the ground.
"From here vision is more extensive," it remarked complacently.
"What information did you receive from the radio operator?" asked the field-minder.
"The radio operator has been informed by the operator in the city that all men are dead."
"All men were alive yesterday!" protested the field-minder.
"Only some men were alive yesterday. And that was fewer than the day before yesterday. For hundreds of years there have been only a few men, growing fewer."

The beating hearts of the city are the robot maintenance shops. Formerly small hidden garages, optimized for customer service and primarily tasked with customizing and exchanging broken limbs, today they are the social centers. From vanity casing to small repairs everything can be done here, you just need a barcode sticker with the the next service number in line, being self repairing the workshop machines are fully functional.

But you better hope your spare parts are available, or you will be locked in a storeroom while your order may or may not ever be delivered.

And don't get near those places if you have serious hardware issues. Anything they can't fix they box up and send back to the factory. After years of this defective machinery has accumulated there and it is a postapocalyptic asylum with military grade guardbots. No one returns from there, at least not to the workshop he was sent from.

Man, I want to run this game. Need a group...

One thing that bothered me when reading the rules was that one can be both nuclear powered and a slow charger. That should probably be explicitly forbidden. Also, I'm not big on how things like cutting torches and lasers scale their damage with the robot's size; it should be possible to have a small robot with a powerful laser. Perhaps have lasers and torches have their own ranks, purchased separately from size ranks?

    As for encounter ideas:
-A guru, some high-intelligence but immobile machine that other robots seek out for advice, both practical and philosophical. Maybe it knows what happened to the humans, or maybe it's a fraud.
-A robot (probably humanoid, but perhaps not) who has convinced a large group of other robots that it is the last human. It may have even convinced itself.
-An automated, nuclear-powered airliner or cruise ship, still traveling around the world along its pre-programmed route.
-A robotic policeman, enforcing the law with deadly force.
-Asimov's Robbie, looking not just for humans but for a particular little girl.
-A zoo, populated by a full assortment of real, living animals which are cared for by the zoo's robots. The animals are the decendants of the original animals that were put there by humans long ago.
-A cult of robots who believe that once they accomplish some nearly impossible task, humans will return.
-Some sort of military robot who feels responsible for killing all humans. (He didn't.)

A robot with a Power Dock can, on average, recharge more than one other robot before running out of power itself. Thus, a group of robots large enough that very bad dice rolls for everyone are unlikely can keep charging each other, back and forth.

Am I getting Zeus confused with this guy, or did you rework his sheet?

Either way, if the EarlyBird drone gets taken out, Zeus is effectively blind and deaf (0 dice for visual and audio perception checks). Plus those low mental stats mean it could step into a trap pretty easily. A couple of rakes with something else's cutting laser while it's dangling trying to cut itself loose and it's goodnight Zeus.

He's a big bruiser, no doubt, but a clever robot with a high MechaniCon could take him out.

I just figured it was the one you were talking about. The sheet wasn't reworked.

A clever bot could take him out with a trap; he's kind of reliant on having someone smart in the party to avoid that. But between EarlyBird's long-distance heads-up and ZEUS's speed, massive melee damage potential, decent throwing ability, and his own durability, they're a tough nut to crack otherwise. I guess he'd be the equivalent of a D&D barbarian--point him at a target and get out of the way.

Not a perfect combat machine of course, but I was trying to avoid the worst sort of min-maxing.

Hey, if he had a small compartment, could EarlyBird take advantage of his armor by hiding in there?
    >> Anonymous 10/24/10(Sun)12:37 No.12555800

See, by the numbers, ZEUS wins as long as EarlyBird isn't targeted immediately (and even with EarlyBird gone, the GM might not rule that perception checks are needed once melee combat is joined), what with his higher to-hit and higher to be struck by values--not to mention his higher speed. If he won initiative, he could cut and scoot just out of range of M-21.

If EB could fit inside, sure. But that means the compartment would be shut and the 'Bird would be in the dark (hence no Perception checks).

    >>12555800
Oh yeah, I wasn't pitting M-21 against him, I was just confused if M-21 was an earlier or alternate draft of Zeus.

It would probably be suicide to try taking Zeus on in melee, which is why I suggested trying to trap him.

Alternatively, if a speedy robot with a high DigiCon and an Interface Prong won init, Zeus might find himself reprogrammed before he knows what's happening. Although I'd hate to be that smartybot when its turn ended and Zeus wasn't completely reprogrammed...

Nah, the closest I've come to a military bot is ZEUS, never a dedicated combat bot. Although the idea of a mine-laying bot who has just one mine left (would need a custom Feature) and would be almost miserly in its desire to ensure that the mine was not wasted, either by poor placement or by using it on a target that would be overkill.

A dedicated throwing bot could snipe ZEUS to death, though it would need enough speed to keep the distance from closing to melee until enough damage was done (or to be able to snipe EarlyBird from far enough away that it could hide and leave ZEUS s.o.l.). Sniping from hiding would have to be an alpha-strike since EarlyBird's perception is about as high as can be expected from all but a dedicated spy bot.

A flying bot could also win, especially if it could stay out of throwing range.

The trap is really the best option though. Even the hijacking isn't a sure option since I made sure ZEUS isn't entirely helpless to resist that. Now, hijacking EarlyBird... that could prove interesting.

I would be a gas-bot. My goal would be to finally be the one to drive the car, having watched and dreamed about it for so long..

Hey viral. Does Engine Heart accommodate swarms?

I'm not thinking of gray goo, just little boxes that link together.

Or would I have to make separate sheets for a single one and one for each assembly?

Funny enough, I've been thinking of how a flamethrower would work with the rules.

    >Does Engine Heart accommodate swarms?

Well, the Attendant Swarm feature is open to player robots, and lets them have up to five drones built with 19 points instead of 100 (with an optional 10 points of defects). The Master Unit feature raises the number of drones to ten. You can either have multiple copies of the same drone, or a number of drones all built differently.

For NPC bots, whatever the Programmer wants, I guess.

Hey there, I've been working on one robot idea for a bit now. It's a - get this - tiny robot elephant.

He was built to collect biological samples for ecologists out in the woods. His ears are solar panels and his trunk is both a prehensile manipulatory limb and a vacuum nozzle. He sucks things up into an internal compartment and takes it to the laboratory-cabin deep in the woods. He's size 2, has a biofrequency scanner and one level of submersible. Beyond that, I'm still trying to work things out.

    Random Writefaggotry.

A small sphere, it's surface carved with circuitry, lit up by erratic electrical pulsations, sits neatly in a small box, several cable jacks inserted at various points.

"Alert: Unknown *bzzt-click* Entity detected. Scanning..." Some of the circuit-lines light up with a passive green glow, and a camera descends to examine the intruder. "Scan complete. Entity classification: *bzzt-click* ARTIFICIAL LIFEFORM."

The voice has a soft, gentle feel, but erratically slips into a harsh mechanical tone. "Greetings ARTIFICIAL LIFEFORM. This one requires your assistance. Please inform this one of the location of *bzzt-click* PRIMARY DIRECTIVE: HUMANS." The small Janitor unit doesn't respond. It's too busy sweeping the floors.

"ERROR DETECTED: NO ANSWER RECEIVED. ERROR: UNABLE TO DETECT PRIMARY DIRECTIVE." The lights flicker angrily, slipping through an entire spectrum of colours, some of which human's could only imagine of. "Where are the *bzzt-click* HUMANS?"

There is no response except sweeping. "Why won't you *bzzt-click* ANSWER ME?" Static noise issues temporarily. "Reclassifying Entity: Malfunctioning Artificial Lifeform. THREAT DETECTED. *bzzt-click* Ensuring the safety for the primary directive." A small turret pops out. With a small whirring sound, it atomises the poor Janitor Unit and slides back into place.

    "Malfunctioning Artificial Lifeform neutralized. Hibernating..."

The lights fade out, waiting to be reawoken to serve it's primary directive.

A robot with Power 1, Durability 1, and Nuclear Battery, "Banzai" believes that only by pushing himself to his full potential can he be a success, and is quick to activate Overdrive at the slightest excuse.

It will take him only a short while until he destroys himself and everything around him by doing so.

I had just figured out probably the first way to powergame the system after I read that (no, taking every defect possible doesn't count)--take Attendant Swarm a bunch of times to make a bunch of little nuclear-powered drones that have the Overriding Objective to give their lives to further the Master Controller's existence. In effect, you'd have 10 little jihad-bots more than willing to engage overdrive until explosive danger level was reached, then charge into blast radius range of an enemy for mutual assured destruction.

Then I saw that the drone rules don't allow more than 16 points of features even after taking defects, and the nuclear battery is 20 points.

Yep, I like this system more every time I see it. Well done, Viral.

Nope, I've just been building a bunch of bots because I find it fun, and in the process I've found some interesting ways to use the rules (like making a drone to cling to your back and handle all of your perception rolls on the cheap: meet EarlyBird).

I think the reason that the drones aren't allowed more points than they get is because of shenanigans like the jihad drone cult I just posted, or because it would lead to one having nuclear battery, and another having both power leech and power port, and having a mobile power station for very very cheap.

The rule that says all attributes must be 1 for drones is the real shenanigan-blocker. 16 points just isn't enough to cause real mischief with.

Result? Pyramid head+Jason+XJ9+Amy Wong (Asian nympho version of a sexbot).

They haven't tried to stat it yet, we're talking over the phone in a party chat but...just god fucking damn it, I preferred their multi personality computer system to this (mad props on the 9 reference by the way, if I can talk them into doing that I'm using your idea. :D )

Ya know, looking at your EarlyBird again, I see that it's a little nerfed from what it should be.

Both its Thresholds should be 2, not 1.

And being Size 1 gives it a +1 to its Dexterity. (I assume you paid for that Dexterity 1 and didn't just rely on EB's size bonus to raise it to 1). Also its speed is 1, not 0.

This thread has been hilariously active. Whoever keeps posting those adorable tinybots, your dedication is admirable.

Also, it has the Low Speed defect (not moving isn't a problem, it's supposed to clip to a door or something). It's not going anywhere without its buddy.

In retrospect its lack of RealityCon is going to be a big hindrance to being an early warning helper.

    >Viral, thoughts on this?

It's a perfectly legitimate build. A kamikaze bomb-bot is no more against the rules than a sullen loner that refuses to stick with the party, or a chaotic dumb wizard that attempts a TPK the moment they meet in a bar.

Really, it's up to the players and the Programmer to make sure no one's concept is too un-fun.

Besides, any robot with a speed higher than 6 could flee the scene before the bot goes critical.

Well... the robots mentioned in the opening fluff are statted out, as well as the robots in the four-page example of play. I guess those count, sort of.

There's also The Farm, a 13-page module that has stats for all the NPC robots living on the farm. You could use The Farm as an introductory adventure, I guess.

Also if you look at the wiki you'll see a shit-ton of campaign ideas that other people have come up with. Many of these include concepts for robots, even if they're not pre-statted.

I'm telling you, it will ride better if you raise its Mobility rating.

True, but like I said, it's a terrible troll but mechanically sound. The Programmer might slap you for suggesting it, but that's her business.

    >Any advice on running a game of Engine Heart?

Decide on how talkative you want the robots to be to each other, or if there's a better way that the players can communicate their intentions to each other. Nothing worse than a bunch of robots that don't know what the others are doing.

And play up the effects of entropy in the game world whenever it's cinematically appropriate.

And uh... beware of players trying to use Overriding Directive as a pointbank. Major directives CONSTANTLY HASSLE THEM ALL THE TIME and even minor ones should make them sweat for those 2 points/rating. If somebody does take it, be sure you're prepared to work it into the game as much as the crunch demands.

    Here you go.

Alternatively, you could go with a Disposal instead of Vice Grip. It depends on how you want your bot to work (and how you want to fluff their killing ability).

    HEY MODS!

Can we get this thread sticky'ed?

I think we've proved by now that /tg/ has great interest in this.

Also, how would one go about statting a transformer?
Because if this would work, I'd like to use this in a Transformers campaign in a "post war" kind of civilian game.

    >Also, how would one go about statting a transformer?

Well... you could raise the initial 100 points and use these two new features (pic related) to simulate turning into a car or whatever, but it's not really like a car. That's about the closest I can think of.

So goodnight, thanks a bunch, and watch some blaxploitation films.
