    9 KB Doppleganger Damacy XXIII TempDM !!GKvElBvNwF/ 10/23/10(Sat)22:03 No.12549831
    >The basic premise: You started out as a generic creature with no voice, no skills, feats, or special abilities whatsoever, and every stat at 10. Whenever you eat a creature you acquire one of its traits. Permanently. For the purpose of this quest, that means I'll give you a short list to choose from.

The amethyst eye pierces the shadows, hounding your footsteps. Your lungs are prepared to melt, awaiting orders; one final push but it will not be enough. The eye looms. Your legs have warmed a thousand glowing furnaces, now the fire goes out. The eye is here. The earth could swallow you up to no avail, gaze locked you are found, found, gone to ground no more. The eye grows, gleams, growls and howls--a booming, shrieking laugh everywhere, eardrums bidding tearful farewell. You are trapped, you are marked, you are small--

You wake up in a sweat.

It's been a while since the last thread, so we'll have a quick recap.

    >LOOK RECAP
You woke up in the city of Thurminham without memories, equipment, or anything remarkable about you. Except, that is, a powerful need to eat--and the ability to acquire traits from the things you ate. Which you proceeded to do both of, in spades. This has attracted its share of notice from various parties, besides decimating the city's cat and bird populations.

You became acquainted with Claire, a fledgling wizard, when she pulled your unconscious self off the street--since then you've been split between eating her and befriending her, but have let her live so far. You started using her place as shelter and her courier service as cover; that changed when revenge-driven adventurers kidnapped her and set an ambush for you there. The trap nearly killed you and managed to burn down the entire building. You escaped, barely, and sought out your attackers on more even terms.

In the course of striking back at the adventurer party, you teamed up with a nameless bodysnatcher, able to take over the bodies of other beings by burrowing into their bloodstreams. He seemed to think the two of you had some sort of connection; most curiously, you could not acquire a trait from eating any body he had been in. You parted on good terms after the battle, him leaving in the body of a large human barbarian.

Claire lost a lot of her innocent outlook on life after the kidnapping and torture by the adventurer party, and seems to care a lot less about other people coming to harm. She's been helping you, most recently copying down maps and information from the library for you.

    OH HELL YES

    WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?
    >> TempDM !!GKvElBvNwF/ 10/23/10(Sat)22:06 No.12549854
You've also learned that the sewers are a decent, if dangerous, place to hunt; that there seems to be a war brewing with a lich-ruled nation to the north; and that the country is waging an almost guerrilla war with lycanthropes who have a presence in the nearby forest. Oh, and Morsel, the cat you bought, is still missing.

You were then found by Karreesa, a member of a cult attempting to bring a being they call the Devourer into the world. She thought that you are a splinter of this being, and had been generally obeying your orders because of it. She sent word out for a large chunk of the cult to come to Thurminham. The non-essential members should start arriving within a couple days--some of them voluntary meals for the taking. The crucial cult members are busily preparing another ritual to bring the Devourer to the current plane of existence.

Then you met Gaul, the Right Arm of Heironeous. You sought him with an ambush ready and prepared for a dangerous battle; you left him with a new hope for tomorrow. Rather than a fanatical religious butcher, he turned out to be a friendly and brotherly sort--as well as a cunning warrior. As your conversation grew in length, you began to wonder if perhaps, this sort of path might be one you could follow. You left with the promise to meet again tonight.

Arriving back at the cult safehouse, Karreesa accused you of being a fraud, and you killed her before she could warn more than the two cultists present. You now have her knowledge of the cult's organization--and know now that she paid someone in the underworld to spy on you. She was to meet him today at an outdoor restaurant, but you decided that it would be far better if you arrived for a personal date with the guy.

Also you just had a terrifyingly realistic dream. But that's enough recap for now; if you have questions ask, but I'll post the stat block and we can get this show on the road.

Busy in an unbelievable way. Internet connection isn't the greatest either, and seems to always go down at the worst time. Scheduling out here so that the regulars can be present is annoyingly difficult, to boot.

I just want to go on record as saying that whatever happens, we're going to need to be a whole hell of a lot stronger than we are now to survive long term. We need to feed, one way or another.

We could ally with Gaul, or maybe we could find a way to deal with one powers that be in a military sense against the shapeshifters. But no matter what, we need to be stronger.

There are plenty of ways we can strengthen ourselves as well, not the least of which by strengthening our allies such as our fledgling wizard compatriot. That being said, there are plenty of hunting grounds I'd recommend, but I won't go off on that unless someone asks me to.

Uh, yeah, that book. You nabbed it off a studious fellow leaving the library, whom you ate to sharpen the mental axe. Not that you took a look at it yourself.

"It's really great! It, um, it's got some interesting suggestions on the crafting of magical items. It would take most of the gold we have--or maybe more, but I hope not--but I think I can use some of the ideas the book suggests to get started on an amulet that would keep an eye on your well-being, and even give you a little one-time healing if you were in a bad way. "I can go buy some of the healing ones, but that'll cut into our funds quickly; I'm already not sure if we'll have enough for the amulet. Speed ones I can crank out all day with the right equipment--but all my alchemical supplies are so much ash right now. I'll get started on the amulet at least, it's going to be a tricky bit of business to make it the way I want to and I may need to get a favor from a priest."

You find the open-air restaurant without difficulty. Even that boy you ate in your first night knew about it, if only because its signature dish of a live octopus, all the way from the coast, wrapped around a stick. At least for the normal clientele, it's an unusual experience as the small creature frantically flails inside the stomach while being digested. You doubt you'll ever have a chance to know the feeling.

The main building and the round tables outside it are painted bright, cheery colors, and the restaurant is doing good business with the sun shining brightly. Looking around, you're pretty sure your target hasn't shown up yet--however, there also seem to be a dearth of places to hide.

The octopus is an unusual sort of rubbery taste. Since you won't be feeling it bounce around in your stomach, you figure that you might as well enjoy the taste now. A pity it's so small. You finally swallow, and you see the reaching darkened hallway, with doors available to you.

Continuing with an idea, can the next time we level, we take an ability to partially shapeshift? For instance, hiding a crocodile bite, or a pair of wings? The more points we put in the ability, the more we can hide? Then after 4 or so upgrades, allow full shapeshift?

An easy scent to follow, given the amount that he started sweating during this exchange. He departs with a curt nod. The moment he's out of eyesight, you're up and speedily following.

He's taken several simple measures that would do well to throw off regular pursuit. However, with your nose, you're far from regular--and he must not have seen your ability here.

A door closing ahead of you coincides with his strengthening scent. He must have gone in there.

You scale the alley wall and look down the sides of the building, careful to avoid notice from the street in front. Odd. There's not a single window--at least on any of these three sides of the building--on either the second or the third floor. Just solid brick.

This trapdoor can wait until you can come back, perhaps with a prybar or sledgehammer--perhaps with lockpicking skills.

As you munch on octopi that a moment ago were squirming with googly eyes, you wonder if your actions today were really keeping with the desire you felt to become the Left Arm of Heironeous.

You met with Gaul, The Right Arm of Heironeous, last night. Currently the only one imbued with power by Heironeous--possibly his only worshiper, he wasn't clear. You decided he was a bro, and a crafty bastard, not a CLEAVE AND SMITE sort of paladin. Then the idea came up that hey--maybe there's an opening for a Left Arm. Eating people left and right isn't exactly paladin-y though, even if the rules Gaul follows are pretty loose.

Clothes are valuable property in a society where mass textile production is fairly new.

Hiding and sneaking are valuable skills in almost any society. Being able to scale a sheer brick wall means that all sorts of avenues are open to you.

You head back to the inn, and find Claire busily at work. She smiles in surprise at seeing you, until you drop the bombshell. "We need to move. There's a chance that someone might try and harm you again, and until I can ensure this doesn't happen, I need you to keep a low profile. I'm sorry."

Well yeah we can. Let's see, people could:
    1) Skillfully tail us, like that ranger did
    2) Get a dog and scent-follow us
    3) Scry us
    4) CSI all the disappearances and the bloody splatters we've left there
    5) Probably something else too

    >CSI: Doppleganger

    I'd watch that.

For the final episode they're just about to find the doppleganger and cuff him, then it turns out he stole one of the crew's appearances and then proceeds to eat all the rest of them.

Shit, have we deserved any kindness this whole time? Even at the beginning, she took us in after we'd been shot by a poisoned bolt and passed out, just because she was a decent person.

I suppose we should start being more liberal with our hug policies...

I think we can count the hugs we've given/received in this quest on one hand. Possibly with two fingers or less, even.

Does this make Doppleganger Damacy the opposite of Ruby Quest?

    so, are we resolved?
In the future be nice to Claire?
Help her and try to make her happier?

I'm down with being nicer to Claire

If we're being nicer to her we should at least see if we can sniff out her lost cat at the next opportunity.

I thought we agreed that Morsel has long since gone from the scope of Doppleganger Damacy to forge his own path as the King of the Streets.

I don't recall agreeing to anything of the sort. In any case, it's no skin off our nose to roll track scent when we're out on the streets going from place to place.

perhaps we begin to encounter the effects of him becoming king, teams of assault cats wandering around taking out dogs, orphan children, and halflings.

finding him might be equally cool. train him to sit on our shoulder for ++cool
