I like your character designs, OP.

    9. Probably a sorcerer of some kind. He looks angry. Don't want to mess with this guy.
    10. Confused, but cute. I wouldn't think her trustworthy.
    11. Bizarre, but not off-putting.
    12. The dress makes me think of a cleric or something, and if it wasn't for the horrid teeth/tongue/lobster claw, I would think this character is trustworthy.
    13. Monocle, beard, hearts. This guy's a gentleman, even if he's a half-orc.
    14. Nya~. Not going to trust her, too playful.
    15. Maybe he doesn't care about eating the birds and is going to eat me instead. Color me hesitant.
    16. DERP. No. Looks like a fishy shaman, and almost as derp as the lion from yesterday.

    10. She looks lost, and a bit cloudcuckoolandish. Either she's not a threat to me in any possible way, or she's a really damn good actor.
11, 12, 15, and 16 are unreadable to me. They're alien enough I'd simply throw them into the neutral category until I'd some other way of figuring them out.
9 looks dangerous, not that I'm saying he's bad, just that I'd have to know more about him.
13 looks to be more of an old man. Judging by my other beastman friends, I'd say he's probably fairly dependable, though he is looking at me rather suspiciously.
14... I don't know anything about feline types. I know I wouldn't trust my cat, but I don't know anything about this woman.

    Just to clarify why...

A catperson is somewhat predictable in their mischievousness. As a race they have rarely been described as otherwise.

Trusting in some form of evolution theory, I can predict most of what the others would want as base urges and would likely betray me for, the treefolk however; is highly unpredictable. What would cause plant like to become sentient in the first place besides magic? What would be their wants and needs beyond soil, sunlight, and water. I would be least able to understand 11 and therefore, least able to trust him.

10 Is the most trustworthy, looks like she'd do anything for you, help you in anyway she could.
Of course depending on how dark the setting is she could give up your information, but you could plan for that.

16 Is the least trustworthy. Hes the only one with death imagery and those eyes man, those eyes.

I can't help but laugh at how much /tg/ automatically assumes that the monstrous ones are the ones that need to be trusted. Too many comic books and hollywood blockbuster actionfilms have them hard for the antihero/antivillain concept.

15 I could trust... to try to devour my pancreas the moment my back was turned... or maybe they'd just not bother, and come right for it. 12 is not much better.

16 looks like a Rape elemental or something.

11 looks lawful-neutral, I'm immediately thinking "ents" from LotR.

9 is YOU N'WAH! Could probably only trust him as long as he profits. My first thought is "mercenary"

10 I'd assume to be too helpless for most situations. I'd trust her not to stab me, but wouldn't trust her to *not* cow to the slightest intimidation

14 I wouldn't really trust. My immediate thought is "Kender-like personality". Still, the character design is getting me all HNNNNG. While I can't stand furries that have snouts, most of the Japanthromorphic designs are pretty much just "Human Girl that happens to have animal ears and smiles with a colon-three", rather than "Upright dog who thinks he's people" you find in the west.

Most trustworthy is the Orc-looking character in 13. Sure, he's an orc, but he also reminds me of a priest for some sort of vegas wedding chapel. The only thing you'd have to worry about is him marrying you to 16 during a night of hard drinking.

Also, I enjoy the ribbon comics, and miss the weekly episodes.
    >> Anonymous 10/27/10(Wed)23:01 No.12595078
This one is really very interesting compared the the previous 8, a lot more focus on reaction to alien faces I guess? Regardless your art really is nice, Ribbonfag, it's good to know you're not a hack who only does cheese cake.

    Anyway:

9 looks hostile on initial glance but that's mostly reaction to the scars, he's grim but looks steadfast as well. He's also shirtless which suggests a lack of status, within humanoid culture at least. I'd trust him in a fight.

10 looks like she's taken aback, it feels like she doubts me to some degree. I'd say she's no back stabber but she's not going to be with me 100% either. Might go over my head if she thinks I'm wrong.

11 looks kind of like a muppet, like the cookie monster. He doesn't look overtly threatening but I don't feel comfortable about him either.

12, man I really can't judge. I think his face is stuck like that and the limb on his head is for gesturing to show emotion, or something. Complete unknown.

13 seems like a good sort, I'd shop at his store/take his advice/do some jobs for him. Looks reserved but he's an old orc so that's understandable. I'd trust him with money.

14 is an interesting one, she doesn't look as immature or frivolous as your typical cat girl is. Yeah, surprisingly I'd say she can be trusted quite well.

15? I doubt it's even intelligent, not evil but nothing with teeth like that is going to be friendly. Absolute predator even if it is sentient.

16.... Do not know what to make of it. It's either going to sacrifice me to it's volcano god and eat me or it wants to know if I like surfing.

    tl;dr

14 most trustworthy, then 9/13. 15 for least trustworthy. Also, interesting aquatic theme.

09 - Lots of scars and a rather mean look, but that doesn't exactly mean he's totally untrustworthy. Maybe just clumsy...?
10 - She looks shocked at the notion, which might strike some as suspicious. Then again, we'd likely be just as quick to suspect her of treachery as we would to bone her.
11 - Some sort of cycloptic treant... it'd probably make for a good familiar or underling, but to trust it?
12 - You just lost my vote...
13 - This one... confuses me. Orcs are typically pegged as savages, and I've never seen one with a monocle or a shawl... one with hearts on it, no less. I'm watching you...
14 - Some sort of catfolk... well, it could be worse, but I wouldn't trust her around shiny things, at least. The rest is debatable.
15 - He just keeps those birds around as a quick snack, doesn't he?

16 looks like he could be most, but at the same time, I wouldn't trust him because he looks creepy. 10 seems trustworthy, but also looks like a cover. I'd trust 9 just because he looks more annoyed to be bothered than guilty of anything.

The interracial ones are hard to judge though. 11, 12, 15 are probably best judged by their own race who can see their expression more accurately.

    2. Shifty pothead. No dice.
    3. DERPlion. I won't expect him to stab me in the back, but he's probably a fuckup.
4.This guy seems legit, however, devil horns usually means he's a shithead. Gotta use detect evil.
    5. young girl. Will either stab me in the back or DERP up my plans. No dice.
    6. Grumpy Turtleman. Seems kind of like an asshole. No way, jose.
7.Bedroom eyes elf. Trying to seduce me, probably to steal my kidneys. No way.
8.INTENSESTAREdwarf. Seems kind of creepy. avoid him.
    9. Scarface drow or something. Also creepy.
    10. Confused glasses girl. Does not seem outwardly malicious, probably scatterbrained, will not trust with explosives, magic items, or money
    11. Treeclops. This guy seems friendly, plus, he's a tree. He gets a pass.
    12. Sadcrabface. I dont' want to deal with your problems, stop waving at me.
    13. Orc Marriage councilor. No way, bro, I ain't getting involved.

15 most because you can trust somedaye he'll probably try to eat your fucking face.

10 least because she doesn't need those glasses, it's clearly an attempt to make herself seem less threataning and as such she should be viewed as the least trustworthy.
    >> Anonymous 10/28/10(Thu)00:23 No.12595753
    Most to least trustworthy:

    10, 9, 15, 14, 11, 13, 12, 16

10 is just... completely disarming. Nothing about her betrays any reason to distrust her at all. That in itself could be a reason, but I choose to ignore it.

9 seems to just have the 1000 yard stare. He's been through a lot, and life has hardened him. He'd like Broof from Doraleous, if Broof were an actual war veteran. Doesn't smile much, but is a total bro.

15 just seems like a natural creature or fae that looks menacing. Of course, it's totally possible that it just likes birds, and would eat me the first chance it got, but as it stands, it seems pretty tame, if not intimidating.

14 seems like she'd be more trouble than she's worth, unless she was a nympho or something. Even then, I'd still have to rescue her silly ass every other week.

The rest... rub me the wrong way. 16 is evil incarnate, and you can't convince me otherwise.

    2. Nihilist spoiled nobleman's son. Smile and nod, get away before he wants me to do anything.
    3. Goofy guy. Probably won't stab me in the back but I'd not rely on him as an ally.
    4. Smile seems sincere. I'd trust it as long as it didn't have an advantage over me. Would probably fuck if female.
    5. Young girl, probably naive and trusting. Would trust while in the city, would protect when outside. would NOT rely on her to be useful. would fuck.
    6. Grumpy toad. probably wants me to rid his swamp of some sort of pest but try to get away from paying me. Don't accept hospitality, be polite and keep my back free.
    7. Seems like a nice girl. If she had a reason to look at me like that, I'd trust her (just saved her cat or returned the necklace her father gave her). Would fuck

    10. Wide eyed girl (literally and figuratively), probably first time she's seen an adventurer. More or less same as 5. Though I'd be wary of her if we met in an uncivilized area. Would still fuck but not spend the night.
    11. Treant. Would trust.

9 - Looks irritable, but not unreliable. I'd trust him, but make sure I don't get on his nerves.

10 - Seems harmless, but either cute or annoying. Likely both. Probably best to avoid her for the sake of my sanity.

11 - Eh. Looks nice enough... but something about him unnerves me. Best not to get close.

12 - Seems like a pretty friendly guy (no, really; look at that expression, and the claw even looks like it's waving), but perhaps not trustworthy. A bit of a... friendly used car salesman look in a way, only some sort of priest.

13 - An orc... with a monocle. And heart-patterned clothing. ...Sure, why not?

14 - Hm. Looks like a typical enough catgirl, if perhaps not as energetic. Probably best to get to know her first, in case she's a thief or something, but afterwards... likely as reliable as anyone.

15 - This thing LOOKS dangerous, yes, at first. But once you look closer... well, the birds are hardly frightened, and its pose looks more innocently curious than anything. If it doesn't attack, trust it, but never turn your back on it.

16 - ARGH. No. Thank you, OP. I'll be seeing this thing in my nightmares. ...Not trustworthy, obviously. Is that a skull necklace?

I enjoy these threads, but I do hope there is some statistical data you are taking from these, with a decent methodology.

Seeing a pseudo-study of neckbeards and their automatic reactions to facial characteristics would be very cool.

For the question at hand, considering

    Most:

10, looks legitimately surprised, hard to fake, at least for me, would not really have a reason to distrust.
9, Combination of worried or irritated, /shrug
14, a cat is fine too,

    Neutral:

13, Orc, niffty, but maybe temperamental, hearts seem to 'protest too much' as the saying goes
15, Has physical characteristics of a vicious predator, but his is impossible to read being so alien, I would give him/her the benefit of the doubt until his/her actions showed intent.

    Least:

    11, wut
    12. um
16, Jesus fucking Christ, stop looking at me.

Anyways would want to talk to them first.

Fukken xenos everywhere. I hate trying to evaluate xenos.

    From most trustworthy to least:

13 is weird. He's an orc, but he looks perfectly civilized. His expression isn't hostile, and god knows his garb isn't either. All in all, I think I'd trust him. He's not a demon or anything, just an orc.

10 Looks pretty trustyworthy. As long as she has a somewhat decent reason for giving me that surprised look, I'd trust her. If not, I probably wouldn't, because that means she's got some sort of problem with me likely.

11 looks strange. Is he actually smiling or is his mouth stuck like that? But his expression SEEMS welcoming, and nature spirits are usually not super evil.

9 looks fucking dangerous. How much that worries depends on which side he's on. If he's on my side, I'd trust him with just about anything. He doesn't exactly seem the deceptive type, just the angry type.

14 I am biased about, because cats are fucking sociopathic. Thus I am disinclined to trust anything cat-like. That said, her actual expression seems pretty friendly... but again, with catfolk, I don't trust that it's not a "I want to toy with you and stab you til you bleed to death" expression.

12 and 15, HOLY XENOS BATMAN. Terrifying motherfuckers, both of them. Of the two of them, 12 looks slightly less threatening due to clothing which assures me he's at least SOME kind of civilized (even if that civilization possibly likes to eat mine). In either case, do not want.

16 GAH KILL IT. Crazy ass staring fish freak thing with a skull pendant? NO THANXS. Probably kill me soon as I go to sleep.

This is, quite possibly, one of the worst threads I've seen on /tg/.

    9. Ex-slave, or POW. While I would be inclined to trust him, strong survival instincts may bury honesty from time to time.

    10. Student. Until I get to know her, don't trust her as far as I can throw her - I was a college student once myself.

    11. Plant. Generally untrustworthy.

    12. Merchant. If cash is on the line with a contract, you can trust him... just make sure to check the wording of said contract.

    13. Unsure. Can't get a read from this guy.

    14. Feline. Can't trust them to follow their word, but their instincts? Every time. Not so much trustworthy as very predictable.

    15. If the birds like him, he's okay with me. Trust animals. Always.

    16. Nice guy, but don't trust his stories. There's only one person he's ever "mated", and that's his fucking mom. A massive bundle of issues.

    2) Looks too aloof to trust, but he'd be pradictable. "Oh, and these are my servants. Let us in, while armed, we are important." Lawful Neutral?
    3) Looks like a goddamned kid in a candy store. I'd trust him to try, but not to succeed. Take him along, and get him some levels. Then, he might be useful.
    4) He looks relived and happy, likely that I'm talking to him instead of telling him to go back to hell, daemonspawn. He'll be trustworthy so long as I'm not an asshole to him.
    5) Content. Looks like she's just happy to talk to me. With a cloak and some hair-ornaments, she looks like a helpful daughter of nobility. The Anti-#2.
    6) Welcome to Sword-Mart, get your shit and get out! If not a shopkeeper, then I can expect him to complain to high hell, but not to betray me.

    12) Sure, he's nice and all, but goddamn I will always shudder when he looks at me. Trust, barely.
    13) Low trust. Seems like a chaotic neutral. "Hearts and Monacles, old bean!" Might have some nice stories at his age.
    14) Moderately trust. Will likely be impulsive, as is her nature. Listen for the bell to know where she is at all times. Otherwise, she seems fine, and excited to get to adventure.
    15) Makes me think of Garrus from Mass Effect, but less of a Bro. Sure, the Birds like him, but they like crocodiles and hippoes, both of which can maul people hardcore. Both are also true neutral. Trust like #13.
    16) I don't want to know what's going on in your head. I'll act nice, but you're not joining my party. I'm sorry, but we're "Overstaffed" right now.

Most: #4. If he thinks I'll die for him, he'll do the same for me.

To all the "hurr durr you guys are so gullible, you can't judge someone on their looks derp herp" people:

You'd be right if it wasn't for the fact an artist was asking the question. OP is, I assume, going to use what they've learned in order to help develop a character in a VISUAL MEDIUM. Seeing as all you're going to learn about these characters is going to be from a page it's essential to encode as much information into that limited space as possible.

So by identifying trends in how people react to the character designs the artist can adapt what they learn to how they portray a character. So in the future when it comes down to "I want to depict this character as trust worthy" then they can look at the results they've gathered and apply them.

Stop being so bloody autistic and answer the question properly.

    Most -> Least

15 - Animals trust him. He also, due to his appearance, doubtlessly knows that he is horribly ill-suited to delicate interpersonal schemings and deception.

13 - Deceit? He's too old for that shit, got no time to pussyfoot around matters. He also wears what he likes, not what makes him more elegant/acceptable. (see: Hearts)

9 - If he was any sort of manipulator, he'd not bear so many scars from having to handle shit personally. He'd also grow his hair longer and wear more clothing in an attempt to downplay his scars, as well as keeping a much more approachable expression on his face. But nope, he doesn't give a shit about what you think of him because he's not out to make you think anything.

10 - It's incredibly difficult to convincingly fake a genuine look of surprise. Also, consider I'm a male that she's speaking to; If her intention was to deceive, she'd have chosen apparel more flattering than clunky, thick-rimmed glasses and that broad, plain(not the alluring type of plain) choker.
    >> Cú Airúath Siblaid !!9x1vEuGv9ER 10/28/10(Thu)19:25 No.12603868
    >>12603861

11 - Trees. Long-lived. Likely inclined to not involve himself with risky plotting and bullshit, finding more appeal in just minding his own business. If he was inclined to worm his way into people's good graces to further his own interests, He'd undoubtedly prune and groom himself and his branches, etc. to make him appear more noble and majestic.

14 - The muscles high in her cheeks/around her eyes aren't crinkled up: that's not a real smile. I can't get a read on her intent, and someone who's not naturally open and expressive of their emotions has generally become so out of a need to constantly hide them.

16 - I cannot divine its gender. Its garb gives me no indication of its status/wealth/sensibilities and its smile at the mouth matches its eyes far less than 14's matches hers.

12 - Its anatomy is so horrendously impractical as to undoubtedly be the result of a supernaturally affilcted race, meaning that a standard, reliable tendency amongst them to read intent in each other's faces is highly unlikely, and therefore, as it wears the fine vestments of a higher class, probably got where it did by either being ungratefully born into its station of wealth and excess or achieved it through wholly shadow-veiled machinations. Kill this fucker if he proposes to be allies. On the spot, no fucking hesitation.

10: The Cactus: This thing will kill you and drink your blood for water.

11: Tree dude, some kind of hippy M.O. Probably doesn't care about anything other than that, so long as everything leaves it alone.

9: Grizzled war vet elf: Trust with your life, but not your money or your wife. Also may have a tendency to backstab as a survival trait.

10: The Clutz. The moment you trust her with something, it will go wrong in some kind of accident, and then she try to help fix while making it worse. Possibly a woobie good for fucking, but not much else.

12: Stoner far-spawn. Gets high, munches on other stoner's brains exclusively. Sits around on couch all day without a job.

16 Fish. Insufferable idiot. Will misinterpret what you ask every fucking time. Will screw up job every fucking time. Would be the star of a children's cartoon for such antics.

It's just artist insight, which probably counts for less than what everyone else observes, because I'm acting on prejudices that exist even before the picture's finished. But, I'll go ahead, because, like I just said, it doesn't matter all that much.

    9. I tried to make him super stern, but he ended up just "kinda" stern. I group him with 8 in terms of trustfulness.
    10. Originally, she was smiling and had a skull motif, but I think that pushed it too far in one direction. As she is now, I think the glasses really dominate her persona, and I can't think of her beyond being on the level of a kindly librarian.
    11. His eye at first was a lot friendlier looking, and he looked so friendly you'd want to hug him. Now, I don't trust that eye for a second.
    12. The hat. Even despite him being all alien and monstrous, I can throw that all away by just him being a different species. But that hat. It's like a mix between a ushanka and the pope hat. I don't know, but I'm wary. He seems like he'd try to convert me to his cult.
    >> Anonymous 10/28/10(Thu)21:36 No.12605122
    13. Grim orc? Plus monocle? Hmm... uh... heart shawl! I think the heart shawl really makes him who he is. I envision him as a grumpy ass, but he loves his family to the point where he wouldn't just not refuse an odd gift, he'd wear it (albeit reluctantly).
    14. She's cute, but not in a purely demure manner. How can you not trust her? I felt odd, adding her in, because I thought she just seemed way too trustworthy, and she'd upset any sense of balance.
    15. Monster with birds. Not exactly very deep, but I do think that the birds do give him a kinder edge than they would a crocodile. If he had a class, it would probably be druid, and you could trust him to be all naturey. Though, he's definitely a predator, so I hope he doesn't eat people.
    16. I thought most people thought fat, jolly people were trustworthy. Apparently, giving them fish eyes, fish lips, and an otter skull makes him the spawn of the devil. I don't know, but he seems pretty friendly to me.

In the end my personal opinion is, from most to least,
    14,13,9,10,15,16,11, 12

I find it interesting to make my prejudices, and then see what sort of persona you were aiming for when you began drawing them. As for reading other people's observations, that's most of the fun in this thread. It's almost like watching someone watch a movie.

Most is 13, he has fucking hearts on his scarf. Least is 16, that shit is just disturbing. Nothing sane smiles like that.

I'm going to trust 14, just to be different.

No, that's me and two other people that keeping doing that. (I think. If it IS one of you fellow chitinfags aroused by 15 then no judgements from my end)

If it makes you feel better, I find fifteen kind of scary and distrustful looking. That's not to say that the character can't be charming or a bro, but that's what my gut instinct tells me.

    Yeah it's pretty interesting.

I still say I wouldn't fucking trust 14. Cats are sociopaths.

Do you know why they play with food? Because they're afraid of it. If you disable a cat's fear response it'll go straight for the kill instead. This basically means the playing with food behavior is meant to slowly wear down cornered prey until it's completely incapacitated... then om nom nom.

    Also, everything in this:

I am half convinced that people will never truly understand everything a cat does. Regardless, these creatures shall lie on my chest and be stroked.

I would only put my trust in 9 or 11.. The rest just look too herpa derp.

For least, I'll have to go with 10 and 12. Number 10 just looks completely blank and number 12 is the fucking KING of derp.
