    Hey, guess who?

Just the weekly thread and whatnots. We didn't actually game this week, but it seems to be kind of a thing that we do this every week. Plus, I could always just detail what happened in previous games or whatever.

Looking for advice and the usual planning and machinations.

Well given the recent turn of events, it seems that she might not be that far gone down the evil path, or however we want to put it.

So working with her, at least going off of what she describes her position to be, seems like a viable option actually.

Considering I want to do that, that is. I think depending on what will happen next game, will determine how I proceed.

Well I said last thread, baisically my guy's returning to the city, and there he's going to find out who the mole is.

Nothing violent, just know who, and proceed from there. After that, seek the services of a mystic to council the spirits of dead comrades for any info on the crimes of past that he may have missed in trying to catch out "that girl". After the mystic and counciling, he's going to depart from the police department, but get some "off limits" things before leaving.

From there, probably spend some time going around with the gypsies, leave the country too maybe. We'll see where it goes from there.

    ---

That was the general aim of this thread, just figure out if that's a good course of action, and if so, any other plans to add in for next time, and a bit further out. We're still deliberating on the long term, but right now we can do what we want and need.

As I said, we didn't game this week because of Thanksgiving, so I could also probably write out some other game in the past, like the Formal Ball event, or encountering the Lich or the Outsider, or the first TPK, or any number of other games, I could write those out while people deliberate on what's best to do next.

THERE CAN BE NO NEGOTIATING WITH THIS FIENDISH WOMAN.

She cannot be forgiven for her transgressions. Make her think you're on her side if you must, if only for your own survival and that of your family. Meanwhile, avoid her eyes and ears when you can and plot against her in secret. Discover the intricate details of her massive political gambit, find out exactly what it all hinges on, then destroy that which supports it in order to bring it all crashing down upon her head like a raging typhoon.

But she's innocent! She came clean and admitted her wrongs! You've convinced me, I'm going to forgive her and join up with her!

But seriously, anyway, I think most if not all of her plan would hinge on her position. Which depends entirely on her Son. At least in Spain. Back in Germany/Prussia, tearing her down would be much trickier, given that she's more deeply rooted.

On a related note, is anyone interested in me recounting a prior game, or will this be just straight up good meaty discussion?

Ok, Outsider it is. I was figuring people would want to hear about either that or the Formal Ball anyway, as they seem to be the two events in our game around which most of the action focused.

    ---

Anyway so, the Outsider, that was awhile back. So as has been established, Nemo and the inventors have been going around the world in the last few years looking for trade and raw supplies to build some country/utopia of their own.

The game has been basically centered around these inventors showing up from time to time looking to trade and bringing with them amazing new tech, which countries have sought to acquire. This has been mostly the background plot, with things like dealing with the old world and magic, and other various crimes intermixed.

Okay, you've admitted she's much better at this whoel subterfuge thing, both as a player and a character, yes?

Time to go over a few ground rules: You are moving WAY too fast. The reason for the whole, "Hey, I know where everybody you care about lives, and I'm going to force you to live a lie in front of them!" thing came from you poking around where you shouldn't have. Not yet, anyway. Yes, chain of evidence, things being destroyed, etc. Unfortunately, this doesn't help that you were building evidence against her (Stage 4) when you needed to be focusing on Building Back to Normal (Stage 1).

First you Build Back to Normal, then you Make Friends, finally you Drop Off The Grid For Upgrades, then you Build Up Evidence, and finally you Return To Confront Her. You showed your hand way too fast, she knew you were against her, and she confronted you.

Now, the fact is, she seriously fucked up. The mental torture of having you squirm, living a lie to save your family was golden. But then she proceeded to hit you too heavilly with the threats at the lake, which will harden you against her. Seeing this, she tried to pull a Sympathy Changearound, which her earlier threats undercut, and which was too hastilly built to be very convincing.

You need to find the mole, but that's low priority right now. Higher priority is working on a plan to convince her you're not a threat, and, if you're lucky, convince her to actually help you.

After all, stealling from your enemy to strengthen yourself is doubly effective in combating them.

It didn't seem to make sense though, why Nemo and his lot would start trading with the world again so brashly, when they'd maintained a strict non-intervention policy before this, to the point that people didn't even know they existed.

But, for whatever reason, they started trading and buying and selling. Mostly with Europe because that's where most of the inventors came from, but not exclusively Europe.

And so every once in awhile, an inventor would show up in some country, and it was our groups job to find out what was going on, track, and possibly obtain any tech and supplies traded from the inventor.

    >I say trading again, but I should have said interacting with, as they more or less showed up out of the blue one day.

Anyway so, overtime we found out bit by bit that Nemo and his lot had encountered something out in the Pacific that was causing allot of trouble for them. We didn't know what, where, or why, but it was the reason they began to interact with the world, seeking supplies and aid for their cause.

All we could assume, was that it must have been quite something if it was able to stall them and their vast technologies, though we were unsure of how they came to this problem of theirs. If it was in building their nation, or simply in exploring, or something else.

Personally, here's what I'd try to do:
1 - Talk to your family about That Girl. Make sure you can get letters to her. This will be important later. Tearfully relate to family that just ebfore your accident, you were afraid things might be falling apart between you. And that since your accident, she's been particularly emotionally distant, ask what they thought about her during the stay. Drop some potentially romantic overtones, but make it seem accidental, and downplay it. One or two at most. This is for them to gossip about to her. So swear them to secrecy not to mention it to That Girl.

2 - Be extremely careful in continuing your current case. Suspect everyone. If need be, drop it completely. If anyone offers help, tell them you're not interested anymore. Be seen to visibly move on. Let her think she's won. Because she needs to for you to live.

3 - I know a lot of people want you to ditch the wheelchair. Don't. She's using it to keep tabs on you? Good. Keep important discussions, especially about her, to written word written away from the chair. Use the chair to plant phoney intel. To make sure this works, the first full week of the chair's use (after leaving the family, and during your stay as well), keep detailled journal entries. Do so afterwards as well, on your cases and trials adjusting to your crippled state. Mentioned her often, her strength for overcoming it (In case she does read it somehow through the chair). This is to set up a pattern to hide those true written intel transactions later.

They never let on the nature or urgency of their problem, but we could figure out this and that from our interactions. Eventually though they did make clear to us, of a betrayal and crushing defeat. Both in interaction, and from observing the state of their equipment and health of them and their men.

Apparently, while struggling against the threat, one of their own became corrupted, or learned some new truth/belief system. They promptly turned on the other inventors, but what should have been a simple put-down turned into a full-fledged defeat when the turned inventor wielded not only their tech against former allies, but immense, strange new powers.

In this combination, the corrupted decimated a large number of inventors, and withdrew from the scene, becoming to them, and the rest of the world, an "Outsider".

4 - Eventually, you'll need to leave your current life behind to move on. Being a cop won't get you anywhere, and having her watch you could be disasterous if you ever learn magic. The chair will be most useful here, because when you fake you murder by gypsies, it'll help point to it being you if the chair is iconic. Be prepared to actually be beaten and spill a lot of blood for your fake death, because you want this ironclad. Family and friends will see your living as a miracle, That Girl as a sign of Doom. Obviously, metagamey, something will be up. You can't hide that, but if you play your cards right, you might be able to convince her you're secretly snooping on whether she's had a true change of heart or not instead of building up to oppose her.

Might actually make her weaken her position a bit to show you her "true self." Will also be a good cover for if you flub searching for evidence against her at that stage of your growth. This is why you need to start building that cover story now.

Don't push the cover, or make it opbvious. Little hints here and there. So few that you yourself doubt she'll pick up on them. If she'd more devious then you, that'll be the maximum before she suspects a trap.

First rule of being clever is always to know how others act when they think they're being clever. Better to lay it on so thin she never knows taht was your intent then to make it obvious it's a lie.

Sucked for the inventors, that one of their own turned against them, but we didn't really figure it would affect us, just that the Outsider would show up sometime later and side with a country. That country would gain an enormous advantage over anyone, but beyond that our concerns were limited.

Well show up she did, but not even remotely in the nature we expected; revenge. As we learned, the Outsider being Irish in origin sought to take vengeance on England and those they believed to have wrong their people and country the most.

And so they showed up one day and brought with them much suffering.

Basically STep 1 is using her network of friendship with ehr family as your first source of disinformation. You want her to think you're hurt about what she said. That your refusal to join with her was more because of clinging to what she's done in the past, and troubled thinking now she's not there for you to rail against.

And of course, for your family to have clearly misinterpreted that as hints of a relationship. Basically, you want then to talk to you about her on her behalf, so she can see your inner turmoil against her without needing the mole to do more then confirm you're not focused on bringing her to justice anymore and are following her instructions.

So in Step 4 she might think she could still turn you to join the group. Which is you end-all goal for her. You want her to think you can be swayed to her side, but that it'll take a lot of work, and that if she gets too close personally, it'll force you away.

The hope is that she'll try to convince you without ever talking to you personally. Through go-betweens and agents, whom you can lie to more easilly then her with her Straddle of Truth.

So that instead of killing you, she wants to convert you. That way, if ever you fuck up horribly, or come back too weak to take her out, you get captured instead of killed.

While wrecking England's shit, the Outsider preached (not literally, but by their actions) a vision of a return to the old world and magic. This was most prominently demonstrated when they went around the English coastline, decimating city and town indiscriminately and outright, uninhibited by defenses or navy. Left behind was only tracts of clear ocean and earth.

Of note, their displays of power caused more than intended destruction, and places on the French coastline and even Norway and Spain and shit felt the backlashes of the attacks. It was just worst, by far, in England.

Actually her Straddle of Truth, scouring for truth, cornering someone for the truth, whatever you want to call it, she could do since birth (she was born with magic potential/capabilities).

However since she cybered herself up she can no longer do it. Even if she shed all her augmentations (the ones she could at least; limbs, eye, etc...), I don't think she could do it.

So don't have to worry about that.

Anyway so the Outsider went about on rampage, and besides people trying to attack or stop them, were people seeking to negotiate or ally with them.

Most everyone was treated indifferently, except for practitioners and followers of the old ways and natural magic. This includes not only human practitioners, but natural and magical creatures such as fey, elementals, spirits and the like. Also as simple as common animals and fauna, which seemed to gain intelligence while working with and assisting the Outsider; either some other aspect of their power, or simply latent capability unlocked by them.

Anyway so they went about wrecking shit, assisted by a veritable army of old world and natural magic practitioners and followers, as well as countless animals and magical beings.

There were various ways they did what they did and wiped people out, but the Outsider themself went about in their submarine using a combination of high tech and immense magic to attack, defend, and otherwise complete their goals. Their powers were mostly water-related though, as they never went on land, and simply extended the range they could travel and affect in their submarine by causing tidal waves, hurricanes and shit, and simply raising the water level wherever they went.

The thing that was a shame I suppose, was that while England was getting decimated, no one really bothered to help, except America. Everyone else sort of just watched and waited, taking in information on this strange attacker and their abilities, perhaps what they could learn and other stuff like that. Besides, what did they care? It was a potential future threat being taken out.

Anyway so, it wasn't until that the Outsider's actions started having a collateral effect on other countries, and that inventors and Nemo started showing up, seeking to build a temporary alliance to put down this threat.

So in a wonderful display of unity and agreement, many nations agreed, at least for a short while, to join together against this common menace. And so forces were scrambled, and what resulted was a fleet of several nations navies, intermixed with Nemo and his inventors and their vessels, coming to the aid of America and England against the Outsider.

The battles were immense, and taking place in the waters above what used to be cities, and the joke is, even with all the amassed force (of note though, some countries didn't put in all their effort, I'M LOOKING AT YOU FRANCE) it looked like the Outsider would still probably win.

However, for some reason (I suppose they didn't realize that they were poised to win, we learn later why), they tried to retreat, carving a large swathe through our forces and attempting to flee through and probably to Ireland or further North. Either way they were just trying to get away.

With a blockade descending from the north though and the amassed (although still reeling) forces consolidating from the south, the Outsider chose to flood-travel their way as far as possible into England's west side. Overtime they could probably have made their way across the country, but in such short notice, although it was far inland, they weren't even close to accomplishing their goal.

I suppose they were just holding out until they could muster enough power to actually travel across the width of the country. They looked poised to succeed, given the Outsider's direct water and magic defense, and the allied animals, natural magic users, etc... defending from the land (and many in the water as well).

We had them trapped though, confined to a valley/mountain range, more or less.

Is anyone still interested? I don't want to keep posting if people would rather do this some other time.

So we had them cornered, but they were pretty well boxed in. So assembling a bunch of frigates and most of the inventor ships, we sailed inland to take the fight directly to the Outsider, while ground forces occupied their allies.

After struggling all the way (our group specifically had to switch vessels twice because ours kept getting sunk), we finally converged in a big mass around the Outsider's vessel such that they couldn't escape and couldn't risk using too powerful feats of magic.

So it mostly dissolved into ship-to-ship fighting with boarding and and skirmishing and whatnot. The fighting was intense, but eventually most if not all of the Outsider's followers (in the immediate battle) had been subdued or taken prisoner, and it was just the person themself.

Still, easier for her to believe lies if she only gets secondhand info. Then she can arrange it however she wants. Rule number 2 of being a crafty bastard: People will see the patterns they most want to see. This helps hide little fuck-ups as long as you keep your head down and the pattern going.

If teh chair is bugged, having the gypsies openly angry/bitter towards you, with you being polite and always playing up your debt to them for saving your life will play into her expectations.

If you lay into your info being less valuable intel (avoiding the more racist police and finding places to stay that are more tolerant if not accepting) you could paint your crippling as having made you see the injustice she suffered, but be angry at how she could turn around and turn even more injustice on others.

This personal quest for justice plays into you wanting to be a cop again, and makes your "murder" all the more foul. Plus, if you couch all your characters actions about justice and being a cop, it might make the cover of snooping into her to fidn the facts about her actions and change of heart more convincing. Giving her the Justice of having a chance to turn around that you didn't give her the night she broke you (And she shall pay).

But never forget all these plans are long term. Don't rush, don't get obsessed with what to do next, focus on the now. You'll know when to hit Stage 2. Mostly because Stage 1 will have petered out opprtunites to advance your character.

And here we are! Again, heavy references to The Protomen. I imagine this kind of Requiem only emerges if Markus becomes disillusioned with justice, and in turn, The Police Requiem represents the shell of a hero being stripped away to the uncaring machine underneath.

Yeah, that makes sense. Whether or not she wants to suspect is up to her, but she'd be silly to suspect for no reason.

Simple steps to follow I believe.

So in the end it was just the Outsider holding off against tons of soldiers, sailors, and anyone in between throwing themselves at the threat. They were doing a good job blasting people away like flies, but eventually it got to be too much and after some lucky shots and hits, our group along with others were able to actually subdue them.

And everyone can take a deep breath as their forces begin to scatter, the waters everywhere recede, and forces converge on our location.

Of note though, we all found it odd that the inventors referred to the Outsider as Eileen.

One of the English officers goes to unmask the threat (they'd always been wearing an old-fashioned diving suit), and what do we find but a young woman, couldn't have been older than 25.

Eileen O'Brien, the pretty redhead poised to drown England, and plunge the rest of the world into the natural ways and magic of the old world. Quite a bit of shock at first. We expected some sort of magical fiend or eldritch horror, but she seemed entirely normal.

Anyway so allot of people wanted to kill her then and there, but the English there (majority) were staunchly opposed and actually defended her from everyone, even the inventors whom more than anyone else just wanted her back, for whatever purposes.

Eventually land forces converged on our position and either made everyone leave or head back to their ships. Our group remained unaligned, and so were allowed to remain for a good while after most other had been sent away.

After all the consolidating and everyone getting ahold of normalcy again, what ensued behind the scenes of the mass celebrations all over, were all manner of dark dealings and politicizing that amounted to what was to happen to Eileen and her holdings.

The final rulings were that the English got Eileen herself, while Nemo got her submarine and most of the tech, while everyone else got portions of it that they had gotten in the fighting and battles. Nemo and the inventors left, furious over the matter (they'd rather have Eileen than her sub and tech), while all the other countries sent aid and shit for reconstruction and the like, but were by and large bitter for helping out and losing much for small compensation.

England meanwhile despite suffering the most of everyone, came away from the situation the best, with Eileen herself whom they locked away in some dark place to be drained of whatever she knew through interrogation and whatnot.

All in all though, the crisis had been stopped, and the world could go back to normalcy at least for awhile.

Anyway so the crisis was averted, and things calmed down for awhile. Lots of stuff went on in the background, socially, politically and the like, but nothing we were vested in.

We fought the Outsider and all we got was her stupid helmet. We just went back to Germany and that was that.

One thing that stood out though, that I feel was pretty bad, was that all of Eileen's allies were hunted down and killed, many of them just animals and such. And in general, not just England but all over Europe, natural magic followers, and animals and creatures, magical or not, were persecuted, hunted, and killed. Even those not involved with the Outsider whatsoever, which was most of them.

Real shame, that you used to be able to walk into a forest and meet fairies, converse with tree spirits, share lunch with kobolds, and see centaurs or a unicorn perhaps go by. After the Outsider though, no longer. Ironic that those she sought to help, she ended up hurting the most.

Still though we got her helmet. Our groups leader took it for himself, but after he got killed, it got given to our superiors as evidence, but I was able to get it for myself later. And I still have it. Apart from it's visual description, it's described as smelling like the sea, a woman, and betrayal... or is that a lost dream?

And that is the story of the Outsider.

    So! I guess that's that.

I told a story of a past game, and we got through plenty of amazing advice, and some bitchin art.

Good thread, if a bit short, I think. Plenty of other past stories, but I can go over those another time, I wouldn't be able to fit another in the thread. Plus it's pretty late and people following the thread seem to be waning.
