Idea for a game. Modern setting.

Some people, PCs included, have "talents." These are chosen at random, it's pure luck of the draw.

The talents are all the 8th and 9th level spells from D&D 3.5. You get one, useable at will. 9th level talents require a round of focusing before use.

How many rerolls should the players get to make sure they don't wind up with... actually, reading through them, there's not a single 8th or 9th that wouldn't make a badass superpower, except some of the cleric defensive buffs. But, how fucked are they if the BBEG got Wish?
    >> Anonymous 11/29/10(Mon)16:10 No.12970653
It would be easy to just play a straight superhero game.
    >> Anonymous 11/29/10(Mon)16:17 No.12970708
    >>12970601

Probably reroll, or just remove a spell like that from the roll list? It's pretty game breaking.

As for the setting, I can dig it. I think it might work better if there was a giant catastrophe/event where a great number of random people got said abilities. PC's all do of course, and must deal with the fall out of people getting fucking crazy powers all over the place.

If only SOME people have powers and the rest don't, it will for sure, withing a few years, be some heavy cracking down on people with powers, ala Watchmen, X-men, etc.

What if its only the aristorcracy?

One thing I liked about 7th Sea was the magic being in the hands of the nobles, and all that ended up entailing. Have every character playing a non-casting class, or if you want to go further, Aristocrats. Have it all set at court or at courts. Political intrigue is lots of fun. When everyone is known to have some great power, but its nature is often obscured or hidden, it gets even more fun.

Roll 1d81 for your power. Check details at http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/spells.htm if you don't know the spell.

Some similar abilities, but no spell is on the list twice. Useless abilities removed, and Wish reserved for an NPC. Some of these aren't great for PCs, but the world is more interesting because someone, somewhere, has the ability.

Yeah, but without the tights and all the baggage that comes with the genre. Or with it. Screw it, play x-men, this just makes for a cool random-power list. Some abilities lend themselves to widespread destruction, others to more subtle action. Some are only useful for countering other people with powers. Let's see...

Hmm, a good one for a hero to have. In D&D, the point of energy drain is that it prevents the enemy from using high-level abilities. So, in the supers setting, it can shut down someone's talent... or kill them, if I keep up the drain. Not world-conquering good, but still PC-worthy.

    >Incendiary Cloud

    >An incendiary cloud spell creates a cloud of roiling smoke shot through with white-hot embers. The smoke obscures all sight as a fog cloud does. In addition, the white-hot embers within the cloud deal 4d6 points of fire damage to everything within the cloud on your turn each round. All targets can make Reflex saves each round to take half damage.

    >As with a cloudkill spell, the smoke moves away from you at 10 feet per round. Figure out the smoke’s new spread each round based on its new point of origin, which is 10 feet farther away from where you were when you cast the spell. By concentrating, you can make the cloud (actually its point of origin) move as much as 60 feet each round. Any portion of the cloud that would extend beyond your maximum range dissipates harmlessly, reducing the remainder’s spread thereafter.

    >As with fog cloud, wind disperses the smoke, and the spell can’t be cast underwater.

Do you guys think we could just transplant these spells into d20 modern and get the desired effect, or should we look to different systems altogether?

    >Prismatic wall creates a vertical, opaque wall—a shimmering, multicolored plane of light that protects you from all forms of attack. The wall flashes with seven colors, each of which has a distinct power and purpose. The wall is immobile, and you can pass through and remain near the wall without harm. However, any other creature with less than 8 HD that is within 20 feet of the wall is blinded for 2d4 rounds by the colors if it looks at the wall.

    >The wall can be destroyed, color by color, in consecutive order, by various magical effects; however, the first color must be brought down before the second can be affected, and so on.

    >Wall 4 ft./level wide, 2 ft./level high

    >Red: Stops nonmagical ranged weapons. Deals 20 points of fire damage (Reflex half).

    >Orange: Stops magical ranged weapons.
Deals 40 points of acid damage (Reflex half).

    >Yellow: Stops poisons, gases, and petrification.

Miracle is like wish, but totally dependent on whether the deity involved wants to help. Cast wish as often as you're willing to pay the price, but do NOT pester a god needlessly.

Of course, miracle is less subject to the "literal genie" problem.

My custom game is like this, except more along the lines of Xanth.

And each of the five hub dimensions around the characters is a certain genre: Horror (Lovecraft meets Ravenloft), Magic (High fantasy), Technology (Steampunk post apocyliptic), Realism (Wild West), and Unrealistic (Super Heroes Utropolis). Each hubworld leads into any dimension that is that theme, Unrealistic leads to John Woo and Anime, Horror to World of Darkness, Fantasy to Dungeons and Dragons, Science to Star Wars / Trek, Realism to Modern Day etc etc.

Each character gets one unique reusable power that follows it's own custom rules me and the player design for game balance. Players can pull a character made from any of the 300 gaming books I have or whatever they want: nazi wookie assassins, vulcan steampunk journalists, elven bitter gunslingers, super hero alchoholic vagabonds, psychic circus masters.

Then they jump dimensions and face anything that's up to their power level. We rarely use character sheets or dice and every single group laudes it as the single funnest game they've ever played.

I will be releasing the official gamebooks soon in any Anon wants one.

You know what setting this concept would be great to combine with? Highlander.

Whether you ran it as "kill everyone else and then you get all the spells if you're the last" or "kill a guy and get his spell", it would be awesome. Have the players roll just like we've done here--no rerolls. Watch as they find ways to cunningly use their powers and attempt to keep their status hidden so that they don't get targeted before they can make a move against a rival.

Just killing them shouldn't be the requirement.
There should be some sort of ritual eating of their heart done at a specific time of day or night.
That way people with less combat-oriented abilities could gain powers through alliances, subterfuge, or whatever other means.
    >> Anonymous 11/30/10(Tue)05:14 No.12978428
    >>12978375
Nah, no need for that. Whoever the closest person (who had powers to start) is to the guy who died--that's the one who gets his power. That's how Highlander did it, and it works more than adequately for manipulators, trapsetters, or summoners. Also adds another layer of potential tactics to the game.
