    Let's talk about slavery.

Like, let's not be faggots and moralfag about it too damn much or fucking have a thousand pictures of elves being sold into slavery.

Let's fucking honestly talk about it, how it can be used constructively in campaign or character backstory, and its pitfalls in being used such a way.

    And please.

    For the love of God.

It adds an element of alien, by making it clear the setting isn't like the modern world, and allows for clear, easy to grasp moral situations.

A slave gets instant sympathy and creates several questions. Having areas where slavery is legal contrast nicely with places where it's illegal.

Receiving a slave as payment or a gift from a grateful but immoral person puts characters on the spot nicely.

My character is not trusted by his party. He's Evil, but he's Lawful Evil.
He's hatched a plan that I'm waiting for my DM to allow me to execute.

Too many of the party are wizards and have alter self or what not.

He's going to suggest to the mostly good party a very profitable venture that will also destroy a slave market.

First, he will get the non-female members to whatever-spell-of-their-choice into some hot, female slave ass for him and the party's rogue to "Sell" to the slave market. Then, he'll go away with his payment, Dimension Door back in with their stuff, arm them, and lay waste to the place. Profit and trust, all at once.

From a Good perspective, slavery is despicable. Worth going to war over.

From an Evil perspective, slavery is inefficient. Slaves are less productive than freemen entrapped by clever laws. They're also a constant risk for escape and revolt; the extra security necessary eats up a lot of resources. Realms generally fare better without slavery. PR is a consideration, too.

    Slavery works.

You'll generally see slavery being using in the background of any successful society.

It might not always be called slavery, and people might not always know it's even happening but it'll be there.

This applies from ancient times well through modern times, and will probably continue in the future.

My point is even good societies are going to have it in some form or another so trying to fight it is pointless as a plot.

They are not necessarily cheaper. Consider that you have to take in the added cost of taskmasters/guards to keep them in line, plus any of your business/property they could fuck up in the even of a rebellion. Beyond that, they'll be less productive because they don't want to be there and have no incentive to give a fuck about anything. A free man will do twice the work of a slave since he has the opportunity for a raise/promotion.

Surprised no one has mentioned indentured servitude.

A fairly substantial number of people settling America from Europe were indentured servants. Sell yourself into "slavery" for a few years in exchange for passage and a parcel of land at the end, with a contract mandating a certain level of treatment, and go.

It's a much more viable system since you don't have to whip those old guys to death when they can't carry anymore. There's no lingering resentment or slave rebellions to worry about, and so long as the country is expanding, there's always demand for them.
    >> Anonymous 12/08/10(Wed)01:43 No.13072879
Slavery might not be as efficient as clever capitalism, but it can be a pervasive idea nevertheless. Throwing magic into the mix changes the formula as well - stuff like detect thoughts and charm person add a whole new awful dimension to the suffering of enslaved peoples. The concept of high-level evil characters makes slavery more effective as well - who cares if the slaves revolt, when they pose no threat to you or your friends?

Then there is racism - humans are pretty bad historically for de-humanizing their own kind, I can only imagine how bad it would be for monstrous races. (orc gladiators are iconic, but still pretty bastardly to put a humanoid in that situation when you think about it) And monstrous races, like freind Neogi a minute ago, should have no problem heaping abuse on us ugly bipeds until we learn our place.

I'm an NE slaver right now, actually. It's legal, after all, in fantasy Rome.
I'm crafty as fuck, so I never sell a slave without using him to impregnate one of the breeding slaves, thus creating future profits. Slaves can be sold for many different purposes, after all. An elf will be bought for different reasons than an orc. Same with half-humans.
Humans are a toss-up, so they're always dependable.

The people living legally in 1st world counties have it made.
    >> Anonymous 12/08/10(Wed)01:45 No.13072899
shit like maquiladoras and sweatshops isn't really slavery under any meaningful definition thereof. It's shitty work that doesn't pay enough to put kids through school to get better jobs so there will always be workers, but they are in no way owned by their employer. It's just that they lack the skills and mobility to get hired by an essentially identical company right next door.

slavery implicitly demands ownership and a right to buy and sell. About the closest you can get is companies creating whole communities and paying their workers in company chits so they can't live anywhere besides company owned housing and can't shop anywhere but the company store. But most places have made that illegal.

Freeing a sweatshop worker is as simple as getting them fired, or convincing them to quit. But then they're unemployed. It's like if you kill a slaveowner and set the slaves free and then just leave. Fucking lot of good that is going to do them. About all they're free to do is beg.
    >> Fuuuuuuuuck Yooooooooouuuu guy 12/08/10(Wed)01:45 No.13072900
Well, it depends on the kind of slavery you're talking about. Lets use America as an example. Pre-revolution slavery wasn't that bad. While indeed the slave was just that, a slave, it was a pretty good deal. The slave owner was required to take care of the slave, that is provide a roof and food. Considering the times, that was quite a lot one could ask for. Of course the slave had to work for the owner, usually around 6-8 hours, but in his free time he was free to do whatever the hell he wanted. Including work someplace else to earn money. He could also apprentice himself to somebody and learn a trade skill. Usually with the goal of saving enough money to buy there freedom. There were laws against killing slaves. While there were no laws against abuse, it was socially frowned upon the owner to do so. This is the "good" kind of slavery.

Played in a campaign that touched on slavery. I had a wizard who was in his later years, and bought a slave off the markets after making sure to select one that had not been mistreated in any way.

Across the course of the campaign, she began to question why I treated her more like family than property. Questions that were dismissed by my grumpy old wizard.

One day, while organizing my scrolls, she came across a name she hadn't seen before on a letter addressed to me. When she inquired, instead of the grumpy old man routine, I figured I'd explain why I took her in in the first place. The other players were genuinely curious as well, as I'd been dismissing their inquiries into the matter.

A man who lives for so many years eventually meets somebody he loves. Sometimes, they even get married and have children. And sometimes, these children don't always get happy endings.

I'd had all this in mind from the beginning, but to make a long story short, I'd used slavery as a means of adopting a child to replace the one I'd lost. Why slavery? Because despite the fact that I was a grumpy mage, I had a kind heart. I chose a girl who hadn't slipped too far down the darker alleys of life, and took her in before anybody had a chance to submit her to horrors other would have to face. I cared for her, and when all was said and done and my wizard was dying of age... she called him "father". Not "master".

Who says I have to be evil to have a slave? Sometimes, circumstances make all the difference in the world.

Cease your syphilitic rambling. Slaves are expensive and problematic. Far from being able to "send them wherever you want," you must assign them only to duties that present no escape or revenge opportunities. You must purchase or abduct them, feed them, train them, house them, guard them, discipline them, control their breeding. They're a tremendous drain on resources.

A freeman, meanwhile, will beg you for a job, work HARDER if it thinks you might fire it, arrange its own housing and such, improve its skills in hopes of higher wages...

Really, the cost in coin of "employees" is far less than the cost in resources and aggravation of chattel.

Settings with slavery can have some interest fluff-based implications.

Look at ancient Pompeian Rome: all the wealthy had slaves do the menial labour, resulting in unemployed (and possibly starving) underclasses.

Look at the drives of the economies, at who supplies slaves, the kinds of roles they are expected to play in society, and how they related to their masters.

Perhaps a cmapaign where Slaves have Rights is a big part of the moralfag church of the group. Oh, they still feel slavery is a perfectly healthy institution: just so long as the slaves are treated nicely, that's all.

Perhaps your party is a combination of slaves and masters (the mage is the slave-tutor who educated his master's son, the young fighter).

    just some thoughts

I'd say it is all about worker supply. If workers are plentiful, by all means pay a few a pittance and let the rabble fight to replace them when they fall.
If workers are not in such great supply, slavery can be a decent alternative for many kinds of work. Especially where conditions are favorable (ie. leaving the compound means freezing to death before being eaten by bears, rebellion can be countered by calling and cancelling the food shipment, they need to build their own shelter anyway, and where the slaves pose no physical threat to their masters) why bother paying them?

    >"What, and go back to the farm and work myself thin making a tenth of what I do here? We are all glad the factory came, we do not go hungry now if the rain is late, and we have new clothes and televisions."

3rd world factories aren't up to 1st world living standards, but they're still a big step up from pre-industrial first-world living conditions. People work there voluntarily.

The mages are sent on missions for the parties the guy contracts out to, and they bring the girls along to serve as heavy, HEAVY weapons.

The thing is, mass slavery is only really feasible for unskilled labor. And for unskilled labor, you can always just go somewhere and pay people just enough to live on. It costs less than slavery, because it's basically outsourcing the feeding, clothing, housing, etc. of your workers to the free market instead of doing everything yourself and soaking all the costs.

Plus, sweatshop workers have fewer expenses. You don't have to guard them, and if they get too sick to work, you can just fire them and hire someone else. The cost to you will be the sum total of their training, instead of the cost of a whole slave plus training.

Additionally, many places with legal slavery will be concerned with excessive slave deaths, whereas in a sweatshop, you can just send them to go fuck off and die somewhere else.

so if you have a huge influx of captured citizens, just put them in ghettos and put your factories around them.

Yeah there shit but so is the country your putting them in its not like your going to give everyone white labcoats and air filters when they have aids.
The only thing people are getting butthurt about is the fact that people are making money of it.
They wouldn't be complaining if these people died farming dirt for a nickel every week.

Oh, you really can. There's plenty of far wacko territory to explore. NPR and the BBC World News are just liberal compared to the average American.

But even so, examine the thesis here. The liberal line is "big corporations bad, don't exploit the poor third-worlders," right? They ran a report about how, to their surprise, a preponderance of workers in 3rd-world factories were glad to have their jobs and said their lives had improved once the factories came to town.

    Either:

NPR not liberal, bur rather is secretly shilling for the corporations

    Or

NPR discovered a story that defied their expectations and political bias, and decided that journalistic integrity demanded they report it anyway.

In our heart of hearts I'm sure we just hate rich white people.

You see if there was a bootilicious black woman in power I don't think I'd complain as much, especially if she showed off and gave lap dances or blow jobs to anyone who asked for one.

But, since the people in power are fucking us, we tend to throw the 'sympathy burden' onto people who are actually suffering so we can rise up.

It treats it realistically in Its campaigns. Feeble human psychology often necessitates a form of double-thought wherein the meat knows its practice is immoral but does not act in the name of convenience. The meat believes it is a moral creature but retains slaves and does not recognize them as deserving of its own rights.

Its players became offended when seeing slavery on occasion. It turned on the first to complain, the peon fast food worker, and devoured him to set an example to the others. It has had no complaints since.

Hmm... considering slavery in my PF game. Last campaign, slaves were being kidnapped and bought off of traders to be sacrificed by the dozens. The party came upon rooms literally stacked high with the decaying corpses of former townsfolk.

We whooped his ass, and then again in court.

Then he turned into some sort of skeletal construct. So we delivered a third ass-whooping. That one killed him.

...that said, I'm considering getting my character to go and find some. Other options are undead (unreliable) and constructs (expensive), so taking in a couple slaves, clothing them, supplying their needs, basically maintaining them as he would other military equipment, this could be a viable option. What he needs is people to haul, place, and rig bombs. No combat required.

Here's a case of indentured servatude that brought together the party.

So I play this gigantic orc barbarian from the Northern lands. He is sleeping peacefully in the third story of a city inn. It has a nice view of the stables and wagons outside.

But his dreams haunted him. There were kittens nibbling on his ears. He tried to ask them to play nice but they would not come off. So he tried to grab them and take them off but they kept coming back on. Eventually, he flipped into rage mode and grabbed them and threw them off. Turns out, he grabbed his pillow and threw it out the window. However, in his delerium of waking up (and his low wisdom and intelligence), for some ungodly reason... he thought he threw the kittens out the window.

    He liked kittens.

So, to save the kittens, he immediately crashed out the window, surprising his cohorts. He promptly fell three stories into a wagon, owned by a rich noblemen. Who happened to be another PC. Now, the one overlap of both this society and the orc's Northern society is that one may either duel or do work when things are accidently broken.

The Nobleman, flustered, immediately started screaming duel until the orc stood up in all his barbarian glory. Then he stopped screaming duel. The orc turned out to be very friendly and even offered to do work. He didn't mean to break the wagon. He just wanted to save kittens.

It was then that the Indentured Servatude officially began, and that was how the party got together.

My slaves can buy themselves back at x5 the price their master paid for them, to help compensate them for the cost of clothes and feeding until that time. No it is not my obligation to pay them anything. They work whenever there´s something to do. Otherwise they are free to do as they please. The entire region considers slavery legal, their slave collar is large and impossible to remove without tools. Fashion demands everyone keeps shoulders and neck exposed. If you hide your neck, you are assumed to be a fugitive slave.

Slaves are free to work on whatever they want while they have free time. A farmer doesnt works ALL the time. Sure, he has to plow the fields and plant the seeds, but theres this time between seeding and harvesting when hes free to do whatever, as well as during winter. He can carve, build, or whatever to earn money for himself.

When he has the money, he can buy himself free and be accepted as a member of society,

Well I made a contribution towards it here:
    >>13073874

Also, a story. Years ago, I was GMing in the WotC channels, when the party was getting ready to attack a gnoll fortress. The MM at the time said the gnolls kept slaves with a 3:1 rate to their own population, so i mentioned that the gnolls had a lot of slaves, and the players began planning how to rescue the slaves or protect them during the fight.

Then a WizO, the mods of the WotC channel, dropped by and told me i was banned unless i stopped mentioning slavery.

"But, gnolls are evil. They have slaves, the party wants to rescue them"
WizO: "Slavery is racist and evil, you cannot speak of it on a family friendly site like this"
"But, WotC printed in the MM that gnolls have slaves, Your company brought it up, and we are trying to rescue them! isint that good!?"
WizO: "No! is slavery, you cant talk about it!"

So we left and started playing on mIRC and eventually OPENrpg.

This is a explanation of slavery through humanity´s history.

I would have demanded proof of someone being offended, if no one was, where's the harm?

I said something like this. The conversation was pretty long, but I tried to shorten it up

"Someone could come in and see this"
"See people fighting to free slaves?"
    "Yes! see the word slave!"
    "You... you kidding me, right?"

Farming has always been shitty work. Only with modern methods are there higher paying skilled jobs in farming, and even those aren't exactly top on the list of get-rich-quick schemes.

Substance farming is often brutal. If you fuck up or there is a drought or natural disaster there is a very real chance you can starve to death. The odds are in your favor that you will not starve to death, and substance farming is, if anything a tried and proven method for getting food on average, but its pastoral charm is pretty much nonexistant when it's your sorry ass pulling weeds all day every day.

Why slavery? Let's see, I can work the fields myself (no, it sucks), pay out the ass to hire people to work it for me (and they'll keep demanding raises, breaks, etc.), or I can just buy a bunch of slaves, let them do the shit jobs, and beat them when they complain. If they die of exhaustion, heat stroke, malnutrition, or beatings, I can go out and buy/capture a new one.

Sexslaves? Train 'em properly so they have no skills outside of pleasing me and make sure they know they're useless; their only means of survival is keeping me happy, running away means they'll just die of ignorance in the wilderness or get caught and given an even worse fate. Sexslaves are exclusive to you, so you don't have to worry about diseases or raising other men's children.

If slavery was financially unsustainable or impractical, WHY DID EVERY CIVILIZATION ON EARTH PRACTICE SLAVERY AT ONE POINT OR ANOTHER? Why does it continue today in Africa and the Middle East, or as sweatshop labor just about everywhere?

Slavery exists because you can treat people like property and make a profit off of it. Slavery never ended because it didn't make financial sense, it only ended because of moral indignation or slave revolts.

Throughout history, slavery usually started like this:

"Fuck, this work sucks! It's hard as shit! You know what, next time we catch a bunch of those assholes from the neighboring village trying to raid our shit, let's just keep the fuckers in chains and make THEM do this shit for us. We don't even have to pay them for the work, just feed them barely enough to stay alive."

"Dang, she's hot. Hey hottie, wanna fuck?" "No." "Fine. I'll offer your dad a bunch of money to get him to let me have you." "No, you can't buy my daughter."

*stabs dad, takes all his valuables, burns the house down, kidnaps his daughter, and spends the next thirty years raping her regularly and forcing her to push out seven of his children.*

"It's good to be the king."

    "What's a king?"

"It's a word I made up that means you're all my bitches. Now get back to work, I want a feast tonight and you got some wheat to harvest."

    >implying you wouldn't pay out the ass to clothe, feed, maintain, and guard slaves, who historically do even shittier work than hired help.

Hiring minimal income unskilled workers is like slavery, except instead of taking care of all their shit yourself, you pay them a pittance to take care of their own shit. It's considerably cheaper and less of a hassle, especially on the large scale.

Of course, you have the equally viable serfdom system, where you just own land and collect rent from the people who use it in the form of whatever they make. And I'm pretty sure it's in the form of a fixed amount, so if there's a drought or whatever, they have to go into debt with you or fucking starve.

Serfdoms never get any development in fantasy games. You generally just accept that there are a bunch of shitshoveling level 1 commoners milling about in fields and move on to the interesting part of town. Slaves get rescued, but there's no help for the working man.

Hell, for that matter, not even Marx cared about them. His "working class" was the factory workers and other lower class city dwellers, not the lower class tenant farmers. Throughout history, fucks have seldom been given about the serfs.

Industrial processes become more efficient, AFTER you get over the initial hump of them being less so.

That's actually part of the reason Asia didn't have a native industrial boom like Europe did - their methods for farming, etc were TOO efficient, and so there was never a reason to switch over to mechanized versions originally.

That's only because Marx's theories weren't intended to be applied to feudal societies. Marx's communism as a step to be taken AFTER capitalism; that is, a society was supposed to reach capitalism first, and then move on into communism.

Uh....there are farmers in an industrial society. In the 19th century, most people were rural. Everywhere on earth. Feudalism is something else entirely.

Peasants were always conservative because it was in their interest to be so. Generally Kings were the enemy of their oppressors: the nobility. Leftists, on the other hand, represent the bankers and the merchants.

NPR seems like it TRIES to be as objective as possible.

It does the best job of that that I've seen from a news organization.

And you probably haven't read anything Marx ever wrote, eh?

I played an indentured servant in an RT game once. He was a Deathworlder who got snatched up by some slavers, shoved into the blood pits (where he promptly killed the fuck out of everything they threw at him) before being bought up as a bodyguard by the Rogue Trader character, who was passing at the time.

As far as he's concerned, she took him away from a whole lifetime of shit that wanted to horribly disembowel him and then gave him food, shelter, a name, and most importantly of all: A big gun and a fucking awesome hat. He'd take a bullet for her without hesitation (and on one memorable occasion, has taken a powersword to the chest for her).
The fact that she occasionally shouts abuse and throws things at him when she's in a bad mood doesn't phase him at all, because frankly, throwing knives hurt less than serrated claws.

Agreed- even when they fired what's-his-face for racist statements on Fox News, they covered the news regarding some people's outrage against them because of it.
