    >> Anonymous 12/17/10(Fri)06:29 No.13187428
Incomprehensible is a good trait for them to have. How they actually function is a mystery. They're never as big after heavy rain, and a smouldering patch of ground means a thousandlegged goldenspider's den was penetrated by the flow of water. This is fatal for the "younger"* spiders as their lifespark is extinguished, while the larger ones lose legs and size.

*"Younger" is a misnomer, given the state of flux the weather imposes on their bodies, it's possible to have a tiny (and unfortunate) spider hundreds of thousands of years old.

I would say they grow naturally over time, and naturally migrate away from rainfall that decreases their size. They are attracted to fire, however, and make a beeline for them. They can often be found preceding or after a wildfire, and some people see them as a bad omen for this. Static populations can occasionally be found at volcanic sites, but these are the exception.
    >> Anonymous 12/17/10(Fri)06:33 No.13187451
So they are semi-divine beings made of heavenly flames, worshipped by many wild tribes (Golden armoured barbarians!) and feed on faith, growing bigger and stronger with the amount of believers they have. Inevitably, one day they will burn down their temple, giving birth to a lot of new golden thousand legged spiders while mostly destroying their believers home. The newborn spiders then need to find a new tribe before their fire extinguishes.
    >> Anonymous 12/17/10(Fri)06:34 No.13187461
    >>13187438
They consume flammable material, obviously. But only things that burn easily, as their spindly legs don't burn particularly hot on their own. A larger spider can concentrate its efforts and burn down a tavern roof, but once the fire starts burning on its own, the spider no longer gains nutrients from it. It singes things more than burns them I guess. Making the huge ones rare and ancient.

That's fine then. They're migratory and mysterious, they feed from flammable materials (or maybe emotions, according to some accounts) and are attracted to large fires. Barbarian tribes who worship them sometimes try to capture and attract a spider to live in their fire temple by setting fires. Many other religious traditions attribute them with some kind of purpose or significance, while common folklore is suspcious of the creatures, associating them with coming wildfires or storms.

It'd be nice of them to be able to communicate from time to time. Nothing clear and easily understandable though.

If a goldenspider leg touches bare human flesh sometimes you can catch fragments of its thoughts, memories and dreams. Usually it just burns you, like touching a hot oven.

It may be a rite of passage for the shamans and witchdoctors to communicate with a thousandlegged goldenspider - not only one may glimpse at an unknown or forgotten truth, it also teaches the value of endurance, dedication and sacrifice.

It makes it cooler when the shaman who had great visions for the spider has massive leg-shaped burns crisscrossed across him and a charred, blackened shamanic mask. Maybe a goldenspider picks up on memories associated with things it burns, and passes fragments of those memories along, sometimes, to those burned by it?

Well, it has a thousand legs and moves at a blinding speed. More serious burns would mean basically instant death. Though we can work around it, i'm not exactly a burn expert, unless having some rather serious burns once counts.

    >Maybe a goldenspider picks up on memories associated with things it burns, and passes fragments of those memories along, sometimes, to those burned by it?
Sounds good. So you'd have it's own thoughts [incredibly alien, like having it think of a meadow on another continent, the current planet alignment, and have it calculate the trajectory for a glide there including some truly fucking weird variables for fun], glimpses of memories of people of ancient times, and maybe the general empathic payload of, let's say, a tree that was touched by a leg, or a boulder that shattered after a goldenspider hugged it.

It was decades ago, before even your father was born. A chilly, crisp morning, one of those when you can taste how cold and fresh the air is. A vile undead mage appeared to kill us all and raze our homes. The battlemages were rendered useless with hexes, the guards were overwhelmed by a horde of lifeless abominations, and a powerful dome was erected around the city to let noone run away. While the minor undead dispersed looking to kill anything with a pulse, the liche itself started some devilish ritual that made the fallen rise again. It went for half a day, which felt more like half a century in hell, with no hope and no mercy.

After dusk a beacon of hope came, a shining star gently fell on the city. A being of pure light glided past the seemingly impenetrable barrier and landed on the far side of the market square where the lich stood. The incantation stopped, the ancient mage looked at the being and shrieked, summoning all its minions to the fight. Only there wasn't one. The creature of light circled the lich curiously, while attacking skeletons and zombies were losing limbs just from coming into contact with it. The spider of light was just as unfazed by the unholy magicks the lich was throwing at it, until a frost lance went through it, washing the entire market square in prismatic brilliance.

    >>13188445
The thousandlegged goldenspider leapt at the lich, spearing it to the ground with its many limbs, and then lowered itself to devour it whole, leaving but a shadow burnt into the cobblestones. Then it took a second jump, to the bell tower of the old city hall, which went up in flames immediately. For a full night the fires raged, leaving nothing but the stone tower with a cracked bronze bell lying on the ground after it smashed through many floors. Inside the bell there was a smaller spider, no larger than the torso of a man, confused and frightened as it couldn't navigate its way from the bronze cradle. A hand was extended, and the golden being caught it, climbed up and jumped, dancing in the sky before vanishing over the horizon.

That's why the ugly old ruined tower still stands, and that's how i got these scars.

Seems to imply it's made of positive energy, not fire.

Maybe they could just be spiders of a type of energy.

well, they're extremely positive. It wasn't written with D&D in mind though, so yeah, i had to read what positive energy does.

Anti-undead, basically. Sorry for the assumption, I liked the story.

Nice and Dawwww at the little spider. So is it attracted to evil energy now? Or is it just randomly floating?

I think I've got the ecology of these things I will use down for my games. I'll post it later if I can be bothered. Bump for now.

Well, I've got a Stone Age/Primitives campaign going, and I will definitely be adding this.

With how much time they've spent arguing Sun god vs. River god vs. Snake god, I can't wait to see how they react to this.

I started doing a quick summary and realised that I need to change them to eating or drawing energy from the fire rather than the materials, which is at odds with how this has gone so I'll just leave it.

It's really suited to that kind of vibe. Maybe you can get your Sun God tribesman to convert.
