After you finish eating and Sansa wanders off to take care of her duties for the day, you realize just how little you have to do now that this leg of the campaign is won. Degrian is still busy working on your wagons, the sound of steel on steel rings out from the training fields, and not much else is happening. The prisoners still mumble amongst themselves, the medical and mess tents are now all but silent. You eventually complete your circuit of the fort and find yourself looking out at the practice field. Collin is putting Bellatrix through a series of drills, Finian, Sansa and Aurelius are running marksmanship drills with a small group of the men from the ranged battalions, and Laelith is working with Lena off to a secluded, burnt and pockmarked area of the field.

    >you realize just how little you have to do now that this leg of the campaign is won
    Whatchu' talkin' 'bout Willis?

We got to get this fort named, prepped, and ready for the offensive. That means expanding it, and laying out fields for a significant number of men to live/train/assemble in. As well as increasing the number of watchtowers in the vicinity.

Addendum: This runtime votes for taking a few of the men not doing much and shoring up the existing defenses. Certainly, the next commander to take the fort after us will be thankful for the added defenses.

Well, did we ever get a proper name for the fort. I know I wanted Eagle's Liberty as the name, but not sure what of the others and don't wanna just basically steal this chance to force the name on it so to wait on that.

We could go ahead and get all of our men to start working in shifts with increasing the size of the fort. Making the existing fort walls basically the center of the expansion.

Pax, using our current elemental powers and perhaps a few hours(?) would we be able to create small underground areas roughly wagon-sized? Or would this be something that would need practice?

I feel it would be prudent for us to be able to create underground stashes should we need to lighten our load of heavy loot (or excessive food supplies) to be picked up as we withdraw.

We should get a list of names for our prisoners.

Then we should inform them that we are looking for extra hands doing manual labor. Any that accept will have their work count toward their freedom at the end of this conflict. Provide them with more food while they work, and any man or woman is free to work or not work on any day.

Any that choose to work say, 6 days will be released even if their random isn't paid at the end of this war.

As you approach Bellatrix and shrug off your robe she drops back into the stance Collin nudged her into, though she still doesn't sit comfortably in it quite yet. Both of you have training blades and shields that match your normal weapons, but no real protection from the solid oak other than muscle and cloth.

Collin steps back from in between the two of you, and immediately the nomad rushes you, saber in her left hand, buckler on her right, all speed and fury. Her strikes arent terribly subtle, but would be difficult for a lesser man to read, the first flurry of blows you easily ward off with your own blade. Seeing an opening left from her assault you swipe the side of her right thigh with your shield, nearly knocking her down. The Kharyncheck collects herself a few paces back from you before coming at you again, three quick jabs at your gut, all parried, followed by a sweep to your legs, which you catch on your shield, and counter with a high swipe from your blade, which she manages to catch on her buckler. After a few seconds of push and counter-push she slaps her blade into yours, breaking the lock and coming at you in the same motion. alternating between high and low rapidfire strikes. While the ferocity of the assault impresses you, the form leaves something to be desired, so you drag the tip of your blade across her gut when her buckler is out of position to keep her balance.

"What did I tell'ye?" Collin asks Bellatrix, allowing you to stealthily wipe the sweat your brow had accumulated in the few brief minutes of fighting you just went through, she has skill, thats for certain. "You put to much into the attack an'yer defence is suffering for it." he admonishes.

"But isnt the best defense a good offense?" she asks, clearly not wanting to part with her already learned techniques easily.

Eventually you find yourself propped up on your elbows, watching the sun dip below the treeline, only a few hours of daylight left, Laelith leaning against your chest, idly tracing her finger along the scars on your shield-arm. "So, what is your plan for us? I'm not too worried about marrying them all, really. Having Jayne and a posse of concubines is good enough for me. I doubt our ladies will mind, since they've been raised in this social convention and they know the realities of the situation.

Anyway, go to picnic. At picnic, converse casually with Laelith, talk about her plans for the future, dreams and shit. Encourage her to share feelings and worries and so forth; reassure her that we're with her for good. Find out her stance on fivesomes with our four girls+us. Make sweet, gentle love on the grass until she screams our name so loudly it can be heard in Uurlanth.

The political minded part of me wishes this were not so. Marrying the first noble house that becomes friendly to us? We could potentially marry into something so much better than her house if people waited longer and started trying to make new connections. I didn't realize changing all the laws so we could marry them all was on the table too. I don't think that would even be doable unless we were the Praetorian involved in that aspect of the Empire.

This is very true. At the same time, the very fact that we're with her is actively improving the status of her house... and a more powerful noble would probably wield more influence over our affairs in exchange for the increased power that they would bring. It's a bit of a trade-off.

Eh, Jayne knows that we won't be marrying her for years yet anyway. We'll score some lovin' in the meantime, cross that bridge when we come to it.

Depends on the contents of that noble house. If it's run by a woman, I'm sure our rolls would make their influence over us irrelevant since we only seem to roll well when dealing with women... Heh.

While it is true we are improving Jayne's house's prestige, part of me feels like we're missing out on something much more potentially rewarding in terms of our marriage. Of course, at the same time I think enough has been said to Jayne that we have to marry her or she'll break things off totally with us so I can't really complain too much now. Too many people have their minds set on her it seems rather than keeping ourselves open and looking around for something better.

I think that would require a damn lot of favours then... Changing the laws to let someone marry as many people as they like would be a huge change that will face lots of opposition from traditionalists and such. There's also the fact that we might have to see what the gods think about marrying multiple people if we do end up being the 7th Praetorian. For all we know, the gods might see that kind of thing as wrong and we pretty much can't go too hard against what they want if we're the 7th Praetorian.

There's "a little lovey-dovey", and then there's "I care for the others as well, but forsaking you is one thing that will never happen. That, I will swear to you." It all but explicitly names her the most important of our lovers, and implicitly- should she be feeling territorial- therefore gives her license to drive off the others who we 'care for'. Because we'd be promising that even if she did, we'd keep her and love her just the same.

I for one do not intend to keep loving our ladies if they suddenly turn bitchy and/or evil and are persistent about it. Nor do I intend to break my word. Therefore... don't make such promises.

More elementalism practice. In addition to creating underground chambers, we need to be able to create, given non-combat levels of time and focus:
-Large trenches/fissures (suitable to, say, divert a river)
-Rows of sturdy/rock spikes at substantial distances away (say, across the width of a river)

These abilities are vital to our plans for the river crossing during our upcoming invasion, so we've basically got until then to make them work or we'll need to revise our plan.

You wake up in the morning, well, you roll out of your cot actually, which hurts. Deciding to roll with it, you prop yourself up into a meditative stance. Eventually you are jarred out of it by the sensation of several bright lights in the area, despite having closed eyes, you assume that you can sense nearby elementalists with practice now, and considering the beads of sweat starting to form at your temples, you decide to not continue your meditations.

    >elementalism skill increased, you can now detect the more powerful potential elementalists in passing, if you try. Cave technique 3/8 learned.

After wiping off your face you head out into your camp to find and share a meal with Jayne. You run across her as she walks from the stables area to the mess tent. "Godd morning, Justinian." she greets you, kissing you on the cheek as she falls into step with you "Have you eaten yet?"

"Not yet, I was hoping to share it with a charming young lady, and it seems one lovely enough for several breakfasts has found me." you reply.

Jayne smiles and sliders her arm around your waist for a response. After both of you have your food and are seated outside the tent Jayne finally speaks up again. "What do you plan to do today?" she asks in between bites of food.

"Well, aside from starting work on expansion of Fort Skywatch, i hope to see how Sansa is handling the resupply, and hopefully go out to tame more Uursan with you." you reply plainly, to engrossed in the time of the day, and your food to be anything other than blunt about your response.

"The forests wont have any to catch, but if we strike South to the mountains, I suspect we could make a day trip of it some day in the future." she replies hopefully "And due to the nature of wild uursan, it would only be practical to find young cubs to raise, but by this point in winter it isnt uncommon to find a few cubs abandoned, or huddled against a dead parents corpse." she replies, a hint of sadness in her voice.

"Isnt that Duchy Land?" you ask, cautiosly

"The foot of the mountains on the far side of their borders would suffice for our purposes, and they only really care about the ruins on the surface of their nation, not the land." Jayne replies matter-of-factly

Jayne smiles "Of course not, the day after tomorrow sounds like a fine time for a day trip with my favorite commander." she replies cheerily.

"If you havent been busy, what have you been up to of late then? I have scarcely seen you over the past few days." you ask, genuinely curious.

"Do you have any idea as to the source of this illness?" you ask, worridly.

"Yes, one of my newer riders allowed his mount to go for too long without proper grooming. Some of these lowland insects carry illnesses that are quite dangerous to uursan, if easily prevented and treated. It has been more of a time-consuming nuisance to be honest" Jayne replies evenly, though the exhaustion a few days worth of constantly using her elementalism in a way she hadn't trained for is obvious.

Finished with your meals, Jayne heads back to the stables area, and you set about your search for Sansa. Unexpectedly, she finds you, looking quite distressed, and almost, frightened, though she looks enough of her usual self that you arent overly alarmed.
