88 KB DesuQuest help thread plz Anonymous 01/03/10(Sun)20:43 No.7413923
So my mate just brought DesuQuest from our FLGS, and we're rolling our characters. Currently we have a Miku class Magical Girl, a Bookworm class Glasses Girl and an Android class Mecha Girl. For the sake of party balance, I am going the party's Tough Girl but I need help working out which class goes the best with her.

Currently I am thinking of going Athletics Team class, as Fitness and Popularity go way up. However, if I do that I have to wear the athletics uniform and won't be able to get the Miniskirt bonuses for Powered High Kick. So I was thinking that I just remain a Schoolgirl class and pack on the Diet points, keeping a handful for Unrealised Cutie.

Am I even doing it rite? Any help will be appreciated guys, as we're fighting aliens first. Thanks.

    >>7413923

First thing's first: tough girls are the entire party's backup. That said, you should try and peak her fitness. While I appreciate what more popularity would do for her appreciation rolls, you should leave that to the bookworm in the party.

With that in mind, I would go the athletics team class (probably more track than swimteam). I know that sacrificing the bonuses to your PHK that a miniskirt would give is regrettable, but if you pack on the diet points and add a secret admirer you can have latent bonuses that, while not quite as powerful, have some uses outside of combat.

I played a one-shot a while back with some scans. My Secret Mage class Magical Girl got wiped out by a gang of Delinquent Girls in town. GM told me that they dragged her behind the bike for a bit. Feels bad man.

I've found that a Classrep character is the best to go with Tough Girl. You've got the willpower bonus from being a Tough Girl mixed with the leadership ability of the Classrep. It's a great combination. Especially if you take the Boyfriend Edge, and he can be a member of the student council because of the Classrep's Popularity rank.

It lets you do a good job of being the Tough Girl while being good at politics as well, and everyone knows that the game is all about politics.

Plus, there's great synergy with your Intimidation abilities from being Tough AND the Classrep.

I had indeed considered that, although our Miku is becoming the party's face since she took the Friendly Face and Shining Personality traits. I was thinking that if you didn't have to double up I should concentrate on max power output, as it were.

My group just ended a campaign last week. My Hikikomori class Idol was awesome in it. The social modifiers cancel each other out which puts you a cut above other Hikikomori. Plus it's the only build I know where you can start with both the Fanbase and Diligent Producer traits while still having enough skills to function on your own.
    >> Lace 01/03/10(Sun)21:14 No.7414321
    >>7414162
Well, if the Miko is the face, maybe student council isn't good. Though you can still be Classrep and play up the political aspects instead of the social ones. The Miko can be the Face, but you're the power behind it. Classreps are pretty good at being manipulative, and you can always get the Illicit Favor ability and get your own mini-Yakuza going.

Though unless you do get a mini-Yakuza, going with the manipulative Classrep won't really be as useful as a Tough Girl. You could always be a Yankee. Then intimidation is your only social skill, and you get to start with a bokken and proficiency with it. There is that hit to Reputation with adults, though.

Wow, do you enjoy playing almost useless characters or something?

What was your Hikikomori's Otaku Focus? Don't tell me you picked something useless like Trains. I hope you at least went with Photography or something.

Kendo Club could work too. Shinai isn't as good as bokken but the extra combat feat makes up for it well enough.

    >>7414411

I balk at Kendo Club because it is available to quieter builds like Glasses Girls. Besides, while Kendo needs a high Finesse, Baseball Team gives you bonuses for merely being a Tough Girl.
    >> Anonymous 01/03/10(Sun)21:28 No.7414543
    >>7414361
You're not thinking enough if you consider it useless. Consider the long term benefits of Otaku Focus: Dance with the Producer giving double skill ups. It's only weaker than your regular idol build until level 5 and then everything shoots through the roof.

Anyone have online info about this?
    >> Anonymous 01/03/10(Sun)21:42 No.7414755
The main problem with Powered High Kick is that it looks like Tough Girls get the most mileage out of it, when the reality is that it's really designed for Mecha Girls (who can get their combat stats boosted fairly easily without sacrificing the miniskirt bonus) and Magical Schoolgirls (who can already get large miniskirt bonuses and increase the miniskirt bonuses of non-Magical Schoolgirl skills).

Clubs are boring for a Tough Girl. You have to keep up your Reputation to be in them, and the Tough Girl build is ALL ABOUT the troublemaking.

    >>7414543
Dance...? Eh, I guess. I still think Photography would be better. Occult would be good, too, but that's only if your GM is using the rules in Demons, Ghosts, and Spirits, Oh My! which he will be, if he knows anything. It's only the best splatbook there is.

You must have missed the part about automatic success on songs your level and below when your combined Dance and Music are triple the audience's level. The fanbase lowers the average and by level 5 you should have Dance 25-30. Hikikomori Internet bonuses mean you can almost pick any song you'd like.

You've got to go with the -right- clubs for a Tough Girl.

Motor club. Think Oh! My Goddess here, people. Naturally crosses over with a lot of stuff- Tough, Mecha, and anything techno-nerdy will fit in just fine, and the stereotypical garage/shop classroom they meet in is an easy way to hide things that teenage girls really shouldn't have. You can do what you need to in order to keep yourself going, and still not worry about Reputation loss. It'll generally fit in with being a "butch girl that likes bikes and shit".

"Machine gun? No, that's an exhaust pipe for a Honda 4-stroke engine..."

    >>7415066
What? Where are you getting this from?

Didn't you read the errata on that? It's only if your Dance OR Music is triple the level. That's hard to get at level 5.

    >>7415267
I don't know about that but it's not like my build even has any music skill beyond prerequisites for songs. Even alone it's enough dance to work on just about everything you'd need it for.
    >> Anonymous 01/03/10(Sun)22:36 No.7415613
Well if your party already has its a designated face character and her politics scores are solid then you should really consider the Dropout. Take your Partial Schooling bonus in Baseball Team or Kendo Club, depending on your personal preferences, and then focus on the Ruffian Seductress path. This will compound any combat bonuses from your club choice and open up many new options with Streetfighting and/or Improvised Weaponry AND give your group back-up political power with the Tease and Blackmail abilities. Try to convince your GM to let you take the Stalker feat with the subject being the weakest party member. As soon as they fail in combat or social scenarios you get insane bonuses. Otherwise take the Abused feat for ridiculous damage mitigation and an OH SHIT button rage if you can qualify for the Yandere follow-up feat.

The bonuses for Kitty Ears boost their Popularity when facing opponents weak against Cuteness in non-combat situations, and the Giant Anime Sword is a good perk if you take the Specific Anime Character perk. But I know myself, and I know there's a downside I'm not seeing. Thoughts?

The japanese rpg scene being what it is, then it's also pretty newbie friendly considering the amounth of crunch.
The quik-play character creation rule for people that have never tried rpg (or who just want to be fast and simple about it) essentially consist of making a few choices and off your go to play.

The book basicly suggest that you don't worry about the statistic too much for the first game, and just focus on what kind of character you want to play.

Pick Girl type, apply the noted stats, abilities and skills, no rolling or anything.
Pick Class, apply modifier to stats, skills, and add what ever skill and abilities you get out of it.

finish of with some costumising by applying a handfull of skill and stat point as you want and your character is ready to go.

And it got a hilarious replay with the rules used either explained in sidebars or page refered.

overall, a pretty good system for introducing people to rpg (unless they rage at anything remotely weeaboo I guess)

I rolled a Bookworm class Mecha Girl with wireless connection (essentially DQ version of jack of all trade bard. can do anything with decent modifiers if enough time is giving to look it up on the net, but with chances of critical failures) and played her as this erratic walking encyclopedia who randomly qouted sources from the net, which wasn't allways true.
Needless to say, very few bothered even listening to her when she started spouting about monsters stalking the school, including the other PC, untill they experienced wierd stuff themself.

the GM had to homebrewed insanity rules though, which we in my characters case fluffed as bugs piling up, due to conflicting information between what she experienced and what she could verify on the net. (one player suggested a nice idea of letting the insanity manifist as obsessive browsing of /x to the point of being distracted from what's happening in the real world, that we rolled with)

pic. related, it reminded me of the game.
