You are a young apprentice in a school of magic. Secluded on a mountaintop, the academy has a good view of your entire kingdom. Your ambition is to rise to the top and become the most powerful magician in the kingdom as fast as you can.
There is a problem with this. So do all your fellow apprentices.
There are twelve graduating slots per year. To become a journeyman is to gain access to much more impressive libraries full of obscure and powerful tomes and notes. Through surpassing your fellows or making sure the number of apprentices is low enough to ensure you a spot, you have to graduate this year.
    Spellbook:
    Minor Telekinesis (10lb-ish of force)
    Fire Bolt (Minor Fire Spell)

    What do /tg/?

    Actually, there's an idea.

Find a way to get to the roof of the school. Roam around, hidden; look through the windows of students until I see a spellbook. Wait until they're gone. Use the telekinesis to open the window, take the book, close the window.

THEN I get to learn some real spells.

Check room for anything useful. What are we wearing? What's the weather? What time of day is it, and when are apprentices/wizards usually active?

How easy would it be to murder another apprentice and dump their body off the mountainside? How easy would it be to play mindgames with other apprentices? What sort of qualities do the senior mages look for?
    >> Anonymous 01/06/10(Wed)00:34 No.7448865
Obviously I wait in till a student is near one another, and use TK, to push them into each other, making it look like one pushed the other. A duel goes off, and you finish them both off at the same time with a fire bolt.

Keep the process of eliminating apprentices in till only 12 remain.

    I'd put an emphasis on:
    Illusion spells.
    Mind control spells.
Logistic spells -- Teleport, Fly, Passwall, Stoneshape, etc.

On the bottom of the list, summoning or dead-raising necromany spells; then damaging spells.

Find an instructor who seems at least ambivalent to the most promising student in class. Get into pants of said instructor but ask for nothing. After a while during pillowtalk let slip you did this at first so someone would protect you from that promising student, who is possibly practicing blood magic, possibly with the knowledge/tutelage of *insert instructor you don't like*, but that you want to stay with the instructor you're sleeping with because you've come to love him/her, and that you don't even want them to teach spells you're not supposed to know yet. Cue tears as necessary.

Casting minor telekinesis in bed optional.

You are wearing a robe with your spellbook tied to your waist. You have various notes on your current spells. You just perfected your fire bolt spell.

The weather is clear and sunny. It is about noon so all your fellows are up and about.
As for throwing a body from the tower, you figure it would be pretty easy. The senior mages each look for different qualities, but power is never looked upon poorly.

The Library is the main location for study. It is filled with the notes of the former apprentices as well as some basic notes that the instructors have decided to put there. The more frail mages tend to lurk there, but everyone will go there once in a while. Two of your acquaintances mentioned that they would be looking up binding rituals this afternoon at lunch.

The Labs are wide open protected spaces for practicing spells. It is typically inhabited by groups, including the martial inclined magicians previously mentioned.

    Overworld Information?
You are on a mountain range in the middle of a kingdom mostly consisting of foothills and plains. It is in the middle of two more powerful states but through diplomacy and intermarriage your kingdom has remained independent. Your motivation for becoming a mage is mostly a lust for power, you have a natural talent, and you can live a comfortable life as a master mage.
Aside from the library containing a large amount of the magical knowledge which would be doubly as hard to find elsewhere, you know of nothing stopping you from torching it.

Is there anywhere else we can learn magic? Can we learn new spells without tutelage, be it from books or otherwise? What are the more divine powers, and are they present in the lives with mortals? If such powers are, can we make pacts?
    >> MageQuest 01/06/10(Wed)01:12 No.7449394
    >>7449331
There are no other large scale centers of magical teaching. You could try to find a mage to apprentice yourself to. All you require to learn a new spell are some basic notes, or an idea of what you are trying to do and a lot of time. You mostly learned your Telekinesis before you arrived at the academy.
There are prophets who claim to be gifted by the gods and they have power to back it up but you've never seen evidence of their existence beyond that.
As for making pacts you have heard rumours that in the VAULTS deep below the academy, there are dangerous tomes that involve making pacts with dark and dangerous spirits.

Fixed that for you. Also, we should try to find something to do with teleporting so we'll have a bargaining chip. Obviously we shouldn't spend much time on it, but if it's nearby...

I think we should tell Lian we've had feelings for her for a while, and that's why we've been distant. If she's not a good person, that would make her think she can manipulate us, and then, when we're in a good position, we could stab her in the back. If she's a good person, telling her we have feelings for her would make her more likely to trust us in the future.

    Fair enough.

You eat the sandwiches while comparing notes. She obtained books on invisibility and incorporeity. She seems to have a hand up on you in the larceny department. She tells you that the two of you can get together and work on some stuff tomorrow if you'd like. Before she leaves she says "You know, if we stay neutral and independent like we are, we'll be crushed. You're pretty good at what you do, maybe we can work together a bit more?"

You don't ask things like that on a first date.

Seriously though, it's obvious that she was asking so she would have more information on summons, such as the one we nearly got her killed by in the library. That, or she wants to join a group soon, as she's hinting at in the latest post.

If we were able to dismantle an elemental and devour it, can we do the same to spells? Sure, being a sandwich mage is funny and clever and all, but if we're a mage that specializes in countering any spell used against us and adding the power used to make it to our own power, nothing would be able to stop us.

Incorporeity would be good against Martial guys. Is it possible to cast spells while being incorporeal (how do u spell it, damn!)? I think we should ally with her. And it's time to learn to kick some ass, 'cause we already know how to DEFEND from two cabals, but we can't really harm them. And yes, that would mean FIREBALLS ]:->

The school only accepts 12 apprentices. It creates interpersonal conflict in a group if there are more than 12. They want to be the highlander, and stomp everyone else out, but can't do that if they want to start infighting.

Clearly, forming our own Cabal would be fun. I think that focusing on countering enemy magic forces us to always know what they are up to, so we need detection/scrying spells. Or learn something that will give us initiative.
    >> Anonymous 01/06/10(Wed)04:06 No.7451960
If we form sub12 cabal we'd be able to negotiate with other cabals... once they lose some members. We just need give them a little encouragement to fight between themselves.

Not if we can pull a spell apart, turning it into pure mana, as soon as it's been cast. If we train ourselves right, we could react instantly to any spell that comes our way and pick it apart and devour it.

if we pull the summoning spell apart it would either prevent the thing from being summoned, or return it to wherever it was summoned from. As for the martial cabal, with all of their spells countered and cancelled, all they have is their fists, while we still have other spells at our disposal.

If it's possible to eat all spells in same manner, it could be a good plan. But, we are turning into fire mage. We can learn incorporeity and use it with with MAELSTORM OF FIRE!(tm) burning anything aroud us. But we must prepare to fight someone fire immune. Like other students who know we use fire...
