    Sup /tg/.
I'm looking for ideas for what type of rooms / side-buildings to include in a Mage Academy. Library, Mess hall, Dorms, Lecture halls and Administration are obvious, but they leave the place looking very empty.

The place will be used as a "People locked inside a mansion, the final 10% who survive will be allowed to leave" type setting, so the place will need more rooms than just the few listed above. Anyone have any ideas?

    The poop room.

It's the room where all the portals for poop go.

    Wouldn't they have practice rooms?

    You know, the explosion-resistant kind?

Big open rooms for practice are a go, and I'll remember to include showers and fountains.
Some type of Shops will also be in place - restaurants, tourist stuff, weapon-resellers.
I'll include storage areas for the various foods.

As far as practice rooms go, there should be some rooms with targets, some rooms that aid in elemental binding, some which are just big open rooms, and a room with many damaging hazards for those training in abjuration.
There will be a tram. It will have a railroad.
    Gardens are also a given.

I will, however, add some temples to various gods.
An Astromancy or Observatory room is also a given.

    Survival training hall

Religious place of worship (depends on setting)

    Brig/jail or similar, for detention

Shop. What, you think that every artificer has a master artisan at his disposal? Hells no, bitches, you make half that shit yourself.

    Storage.
    Magical storage.
    EXTREME magical storage. Heavily warded.

Certain disciplines will require specialty labs, especially summoning and divination. The theoretical magical studies post-grads will require their own facility detached from the main building.

Could you expand on what this would be?

Towers, guards, guard barracks, battlements, gate. Probably not very many as it's an academy, but every place needs defense.

Is everything hogwarts magic or is the spellcasting reserved for higher purposes? If so there will be entire wings with quarters for servants, cooks, maids, beast masters, a guard, gardeners, workmen...
...kitchens, storage, cold storage, stables, workshops, sheds, laundry halls, and a headmistress to herd them all with her own apartment and study.

Wizard schools are also notorious for ancient cellar-dungeons and extensive cavernous structures which are no longer officially used, extremely dusty, and somewhat dangerous to enter at night.

If there is a hierarchy (and mages always have hierarchies) the upper echelons will have their own separate everything, maybe one or two intermediary castes as well to a degree. I mean with just 50 masters and 200 apprentices you can have a city of thousands just providing for them.

To expound further on the words of Satan:

It'll depend largely on the conventions on use of magic in your world. Is magic only intended for high-falutin' shit? Then it'll be a combination machine shop / janitorial supply room. Do you use magic to sweep a floor? Then it'll be a well-stocked break room where the janitors hang out between magicking toilets unstuck.
    >> Anonymous 01/07/10(Thu)06:11 No.7470736
...Or you go a little less hamfisted about the whole thing and divide your mages up into schools/orders/hat colors that each have their own wing/building//part of the tower. Then you ahpe the individual parts of your academy a little to their inhabitants by making the living and working arrangements reflect the magical philosophy those mages embrace.

Magic is controlled and restricted. Magic is ~available~ to everyone, but those who cast it without permission are sentenced to death.
This is because (in the setting) any spell cast will pollute the nearby area with magical residue when the spell completes. 100 spellcasters won't do much beyond give the academy frequent lightning storms, but 100,000 casters will make fiery meteors rain down and demolish the entire kingdom. Hence the restriction.
In this case, some retard in power has decided there are too many apprentices this year so he's having them all kill each-other.
    >> Anonymous 01/07/10(Thu)06:13 No.7470756
Library consists of at least 9 major rooms across three different levels, with 6 adjacent study rooms in each. 8 major lecture halls, two (adjacent) mess halls, any number of dorms, a seperate but connected (and similarly sealed off) administration. Kitchens, practice rooms between the lecture halls/libraries and the dorms. Toilets and showers. Rec rooms on the far side of the building, just beyond the dorms, one in each dorm hall, connected by stairs to eachother. Then any number of special research rooms for any variety of magical school (depends on your setting).

There are no hat colors and the schools are intermixed. There will be separate Men's and Women's dormitories, and the maintenence staff / servants / apprentices / guards / professors / administratium / traders will all have their own living and working areas.

Magic, as said, is restricted - anyone CAN learn it, but only very few are permitted to use it.

In that case, every single building you'd find on a regular university campus? You'd have that, plus some. The vast majority of the building would be dedicated to purely mundane tasks like kitchens, janitorial closets, records archives, physical plant, restrooms, dormitories, recreational facilities, etc. Unless the staff is housed off-site, repeat for every single staff member.

Any ideas for special research rooms?
We have an astromancy, a temple, a divinations room, summoning chambers for animals / golems / elementals / demons / undead (all separate), labs for alchemy, enchantment, runecraft and spell combination/spellcraft, garden will double for all that wacky nature crap, and perhaps some rooms that are resistant to the various destructive elements.
    Anything missing?

depending a bit on what level of technology, there would have to be a sewage system, heating system and water system. All of these requires personel to keep functioning, and facilities to maintain/repair them. Example, open fireplaces for heating requires chimneys, unless you want anyone inside constantly coughing, and personel to keep them functioning, as well as desing them so that they can be cleaned at all.
Generally, you'll want these type of facillities to keep hygine high, if you want to keep diseases out. You might want to consider some type of quarantine chambers, after all, who knows want kind of weird flues and poxes, or worse your students might catch with all that magic around

    >MC Escher room.
    >MC Escher maze.
the distinction is important - an MC Escher Room has a cupboard with pairs of 7-dimensional socks, and a MC Escher maze has a depressed, neurotic Minotaur and his psychotherapist.

And add a hedge maze with some nice flower beds and a gazebo. Have everybody talk about it in hushed tones and fear in their eyes, even if the speaker is the Lecturer of Battlemagic, or some other badass.

Rooms especially proofed against certain types of magic, for practicing in, games hall/sports hall, have you thought about observatories or rooftop gardens/greenhouses? Arcane Vaults for storing powerfull magic iteams are a must. secret passage ways, hidden rooms with no real function other than being hidden, rec rooms, depending on the size of your college you might want it to be self sufficeant, thefore shops and factories (if thats the right term) would also be included. laboratories, map rooms, brothel/harem?,
