HOPEFULLY less Asian wars in this one...

The Fiddle is your bread, and your voice is your butter. You tell stories and sing song, to entertain is your livelihood...

    The Town and your Inventory:
The town has a Town Hall that looks like it used to be a big house, a stable, and Inn, a Tavern, a Shop, a Guardhouse with a few cells inside of it, and a Blacksmith's at the edge of town.
And, for gods know what reason, they seem to be building something on a hill overlooking the town...
Also, you have only a few personal possessions. You have the clothes on your back, one more set of clothes in your pack, your Fiddle and its case, a small tin of polish and resin, and a knife hidden in your boot, you never know when a girl will have to defend herself!

You have just received a meal from the Tavern owner for 4 copper. He has also been forced by his wife to give you a meal this evening in exchange for playing in his bar that evening. You still have quite some time before that, so you have decided to go up to the construction site and play for the workers up there.
    >> Anonymous 01/08/10(Fri)05:11 No.7484752
Note to self: Have a chat with tavern owner's wife at earliest opportunity when the shift ends for the workers.

Better hurry to the construction site, they may still be eating lunch and have some change from buying it!

Well let's walk up to the site then.
    >> Indonesian Gentleman 01/08/10(Fri)05:12 No.7484770
Agreed; let's check out the site. What construction is it? Maybe we can give an appropriate song about it.

You'll make a point to talk to the angry but nice kitchen lady when you can. But right now you need to get up the the construction site!
As you get closer it looks like it's some kind of tower they are building. That explains the giant hole int he ground a few miles away.
The workers are sitting near the base in the shade, eating. Oddly enough, there seems to be almost as many women as there are men.

What kind of song shall you play?

You're fingers fly as you go faster and faster, the woman keeping perfect pace. Soon your bow blurs as you pick the pace up again. The crowd is leaning foreword now, wondering who will lose who.
With a final burst of speed you finish the song a few seconds before tho woman. She is a a little brethless and red inthe face, but as soon as she gets air into her lungs she begins to laugh.

You introduce yourself as Janis Ivanova, ask her about maybe accompanying you tonight, about the weather, and finally and inquire about the tower. Miranda nods. "That is a northern name, not many people from here know those songs. You are either the daughter of an immigrant, or very far from home. I'm no farmer, but as for the tower... well the town counsel decided that building a fortified structure would scare off bandits and kobolds. Maybe it will attract the army's attention, but the village would rather it didn't. And I would love to watch you tonight, but I don't know if my throat can handle another go at you."

The invitation to the tavern at night is more of a friendly invite for a night of fun with songs and the flowing of ale for all those in the establishment to enjoy.

Ask her how she knew about the little lullaby we played to begin with. Depending upon her answer I suggest we either press forward with it or politely leave and return to town and explore the town in-depth more, figure out exactly where the main business establishments are at.

When you ask Miranda about the lullaby, she smiles again. "When I was younger, I traveled to the north. I was helping a small village with wolfs when I heard a young woman singing it to her baby one night. I asked her to teach me."
You tell her that yes, you are from the north. And that you won't tax her voice any more. "Well I thank you for that! And who knows, maybe that wee little lass was YOU?" She looks up towards the sun. "Well, back to work, this tower won't build itself yet."

Waving goodbye, and smiling at some of the young men admiring you, you head back to the town.
The Town is very small, it wasn't even on the map you saw in the last traveler's inn you stayed at. All the buildings seem to be built around the center of town, which has a small fountain of clean water in it.
The noticeboard has an announcement about a town meeting next week, and that free lessons will be given to anyone who wants to learn to read and write on the second floor of the town hall in the evenings.
Both seem to be at least a few days old.
It seems you have 3 or 4 hours until the sun starts setting.

You get a drink and decide to check out the vendors... well VENDOR, the town only has one shop.
A bored young lady sits behind the counter with a small book. When she sees you she sits up. "Oh hello there! You're new!" Her eyes look at Elisabeth's case. "Cor, what's that?"
The shop seem to carry basic things like rope and seeds and food, but also has a few nicer things locked in a glass case at the end. Including a fancy blue comb, a few rings, and a long knife.

Laugh a bit at the irony of the posting about the "free lessons to learn how to read and write" on the bulletin board (the people who would want to do this can't because they don't know HOW to read or write).

Check out what the vendors have to sell and try to strike up some small talk with them. If they ask for some tales or songs give them a quick little fairy tale or a verse of a song and if they want to hear more to invite them to the town when they close up shop for the evening.

You take out Elisabeth and pluck the strings. The woman's eyes light up. "Oh wow! I wish I could do that! I only seem to be useful hittin' things on the head." She stands up and you now notice she's about a head and a half taller then you. And her arms are thicker then you first thought. "You have a gift miss. Name's Tabitha. But you can call me Tabby, everyone else dose." After you finish you invite her to the Tavern, and ask about the items in the case.
"Oh them? Special? Nah, just fancy. Except the knife. Its really well made and balanced. Not magic though, I've never seen real magic before."

I doubt that this town has any "magical" items (assuming we're talking about a fantasy setting) just based on the size of the place.

In any case, tell her a bit about Elizabeth and play a quick little uplifting tune for the woman. Make note of the prices of the items in the shop, taking note of the price for some rope, a waterskin, a traveller's cloak/robe, flint and steel, a sleeping mat and possibly a whetstone (hand-sized device used to sharpen blade edges, though that would probably be at the blacksmith's shop). Invite her to the tavern when she closes up for a performance by ourself for the patrons.

Depends upon what setting this is. I doubt we're a DnD Bard and more of bard in the traditional sense of a travelling minstrel and knowledge of lore.

Also a lot of the people (especially women) in town seem well-built. Ask if everyone has helped out in the construction of the tower at some point, or helped till/seed/harvest crops in the fields.

I think it's only for the purposes of those who love their crunch. Ghost Sound and Prestidigitation were originally intended as "parlor tricks" to keep in theme with the bard mythos, nothing wrong with that. It's creative role-playing that can make them be useful (that, and proper GM-ruling to not make Prestidigitation able to do/mimic so many damn things).

Saying goodbye to Tabby, who is currently yelling at a couple of kids who tried to steal some candy, you step across the street to the Tavern. You poke your head into the kitchen and see...
Well she isn't fat... But she IS big like... Well not to sound cheesy here, but shes built like a brick house. A little shorter then you, but she MUST have some dwarven blood in her somewhere... "Oh hello little miss! And how is the bard doing?"
You don't even pause, you've seen a fair portion of the world and you know better then to be rude. She smiles as you tell her you've invited most of the town for some song and dance. "Well at least they'll be doing more then drinking, like normal. And don;t you let my husband get to you. He's worried that if word gets around everyone will want something of him."

Well well well... Assuming that what he aid is true, that explains why Miranda is strong and can carry a tune. Probably helps out the village every now and then during your bandit/kobold raids when the guardsmen need help too.

And - assuming we're talking DnD bard rules - we can't wear chainmail yet unless it's made of mithril (gotta love your mithril materials) because normal iron/steel will mess with our spellcasting.

For now ask if they've ever made a metal instrument, like a flute or an ocarina. Describe what they are if need-be. Otherwise invite him and the blacksmith to the tavern tonight for the show.

"That... wassssn't me Miss. That was S-s-sampson! He's really skilled! It's a shame he lives here and not in a bigger city, he could make a lot of money. He was trained by Dwarfs!"
