    Ok /tg/

For this exercise, try and come up with a truly disturbing, unsettling, outright creepy BBEG which will make your PC's feel unsafe to even approach. This should be a character that when view from a distance is an interesting and awesome character, but up close and opposing you is nothing nightmare fuel behavior.

I want a character that, the moment I mention his POSSIBLE presence in an area, all the players will immediately think "Oh crap, it's THAT guy!"

An easily defined outward appearance, a gimmic, and genuine combat muscle with DM willingness to let him kill a PC or two to make a point.

Watch Darker than Black. Since your pic is anime, you'll probably appreciate it all. Hell, you just need the first episode.

Every 'contractor' in the series is born without empathy. They only act out of self interest and do not operate based on pity or regret. A few eps in, there's a scene with a contractor getting the shit tortured out of her. She screams and writhes while her fingers are broken, then calmly notes that if she really knew the information she'd have betrayed her employer by now, and if <protagonist> were a contractor then he'd understand this, because the only thing she could care about is herself. It really highlights how fucking insane they are, and they're what I use as my model for sociopathic villains.

I've always had a thing for BBEGs that play off the player's backgrounds. Of course, if you're not running a very RP-heavy game, that's hard to do, but something like a pretty normal looking guy who, whenever the players approach him, his face becomes someone from their past that either frightened them or they feel responsible for the death of, etc. Psychological investment. Of course, it's easy to make the guy a mage or something who specializes in illusion magic, playing off fears and personal regrets.

    I dunno, just musing.

Ridiculously tall, thin and pale, white-haired old man. Morbidly obsessed with hygiene, to the point that he regularily casts circle of death several times a day without a care of who gets shafted by it to "get rid of the germs" and the like. PC's are low enough level to die of the spell.

A twelve year old girl, dressed in a school uniform. Her legs are fragile but heal rapidly, meaning that as she walks her legs snap and splinter, through the skin in parts, before healing and snapping all over again when she takes her next step.
The left arm and shoulder of her body are bloated in places as if with large, putrid goiters, and her right is snapped toward the wrist, straying from blue and darkening to her black fingertips. As she travels the arm swings from the break loosely, but if she needs to she can raise the hand using the break as an extra joint.

Her neck is likewise broken, and lolls freely with gravity. Her eyes have been torn from her skull, leaving bloody trails down her face.
In combat she can cause a person's blood to boil or bones to explode, or she can wield her own of these offensively, spraying with boiling blood or tearing out bones which explode on her command, usually after throwing or stabbing.
Her small body is covered in Daemonic runes and a large Mark of Chaos Undivided, but unless the Daemon is using it's stronger powers they don't burn through.
The Daemon is a Prince, and it's personality is that of an artist. It will follow a person, learn of them, delve into their fears and failings and then torture them horribly, giving the victim it's undivided attention.

"If you're like me, which means you've spent a very long time doing this kind of thing, you'll understand that every person's pain is special. Everyone bleeds, screams and shits themselves in their own special way. I could drown this whole world in blood... But where's the fun in that? I like doing it one person at a time."

He needs to have an unnatural obsession with the PC's

Also try to focus on your player's "weak point"

So the BBEG would have brother complex/foe yay to the most homophobic of the group

The attention whore would be pretty much ignored by him

the prideful one would be have some feature that the BBEG pities.

Make him a generally nice guy, always willing to help those in need, always up for a nice, jovial chat. Even while he unemphatically slaughters women and children in bestial ways to fuel his blood magic or something. And he can't stand them screaming and shying away in terror when they grasp his ritually disfigured/scarred face due to some clothing/masking failure.

    Oh, mother, dear,
    We sadly fear,

We had a Lawful Evil BBEG, and a Chaotic Evil one (This guy.) They weren't even working together. Lawful was doing her whole 'master plan thing' and Chaotic was fucking everyone's shit up. In fact, our last fight was a showdown with the Chaotic Evil bastard himself RIGHT AFTER the fight with the Lawful Evil bitch.

the man is white always seems like such a nice, genial man, helpful and polite. this is because he's a psychopath, playing the role of kindly middle aged man. the PCs find out his real nature when he brutally beats a street urchin to death in front of then for tugging on his sleeve to beg for money. and then he just turns back to them, splattered with blood, and picks up where he left off talking like nothing happens. when the PCs confront him, he shouldn't have any trouble beating them unconscious, but he never seems to kill them.

sometimes when they wake up they discover he's left them "presents", which can range from a bloody knife and severed hand, to a rotting and mutilated corpse, to a small pouch of teeth and coins, all covered in dry blood. because deep down he knows the PCs are his friends. he just has to make them understand.

Describe the things happening instead of the BBEG. He could very well be a child or a dog or a small furry cat. It doesnt matter, just make it covered in black fog/smoke. They can get glimpses of the THING in the fog but not in its entirety. Give them little details after every encounter but DON'T overdo it.
In my experience the best thing that works out is to have the PC come across the fucker in a very silent forest scene with the thing mutilating/killing/eating some sentient being. When it notices the PCs LET THE PCs KNOW. It might range from nosebleed to outright redout. Mosquitoes suddenly appearing, frogs raining from the sky. ANY crazy and disturbing shit happening when they see the BBEG.

A construct that was built for scientific and medical research. It seems to be highly intelligent and adaptive. It prioritizes life and research above all else. However it gives no thought to quality of life, often turning people into horrifying abominations in the name of "helping" them. It is surrounded by many of abominations that it has created and controls a great deal of wealth due to the fact that it performs its horrific procedures and research for less than scrupulous nobles at a high price.

It can be persuasive and charming and if you did not know better you would swear it was a sentient creature. However, underneath this all is a construct unwavering in its devotion to its mad procedures.

What I keep coming back to is a BBEG who isn't a guy at all, but an infection, a possession, or some sort of psychic phenomenon.

There are signs, subtle things at first. You start fidgeting, one specific sort of nervous tic. You develop a recurring dream that seems clearer and more detailed every night. An unusual turn of phrase pops up in your conversation. You start remembering things that didn't happen to you. Before you know it, you're thinking like him, and you don't even realize it.

When the PCs work out that someone near them is about to turn into the monster that they've killed five times already... when they walk into a village where *everyone* is showing the tell...

THE ASHEN EMPEROR OF DUST AND DESPAIR

Deep in the gray sands of the Underworld of the South lies a stark black tower, constantly pouring out deep funnels of black cloying smoke. This Citadel is the Crematorium King’s Castle, the lair of the Ashen Emperor of Dust and Despair, a Deathlord seen amongst his fellows as oracular and powerful. He is an emaciated figure of black char and ash, a wasted away corpse burned to a veritable crisp. He can not speak; his lower jaw, tongue, and much of his insides, burned away completely. He sits, slumping in his dark soulsteel throne, a few equally burned tattered rags wrapping his figure, with eyes of piercing glowing red embers, and has barely moved in the centuries since his coming to the Shadowlands.

He does speak though, in a fashion. Attached to his chest with terribly heavy chains are four ghosts of small children, fastened by their necks with vicious looking bolts through their necks. When he is alone, they mill about, fighting with each other, crying, sleeping, doing things four sad little ghost children would do when left to their own devices, chained to an unmoving, uncaring Deathlord. It is through these children that the Ashen Emperor of Dust and Despair channels his voice, his will, and his Virtues.

He always looks beaten and bloodied, his lip cut, his eyes blackened, nursing never healing wounds, but with defiant eyes saying that despite his painful state, he would not back down. This boy was beaten to death by his drunken father, born of cruelty it is all he knows. Whenever the Emperor speaks of war, of torture, or when he is angry, it is through this impotently angry little boy, yelling childish threats and names and gloriously describing the pain and harm his servants should inflict with a sick child’s glee.

The second one is the youngest, about four summers of age. She has dark hair, neatly braided, but left to tangle and gather dirt for decades. She keeps a headless rag doll with her at all times. She died during the Contagion, even though she was one of the rare children immune to the disease. But she was the only one among her whole village. For weeks she stayed by her dead mother's side, trying to wake her up, shaking her, trying to find food in the house. She represents the Emperor's Compassion, and she is usually always crying and caring to her doll as if it had lost it's mother just like her. When he is sad, merciful, or simply trying to be non-threatening (which should be noted is always a ruse), he speaks through her. Her throat, sore from constant crying, always sobbing and sniffing, is a calm respite from his wrath.

The third child is the tallest, and the oldest, a noble-looking girl of 13 years of age. She has long, straight black hair, and her head and nose drips black blood. Her eyes are wild, one lazy and badly unfocused, and her mouth sags at one side. She was a Shogunate princess, loved and doted upon to her every whim by her parents. She was spoiled rotten, and would never take no for an answer, and such was her death. Denied something she longed for, she threw a tantrum that lasted two days, until an aneurysm in her brain caused her instant and sudden death. She represents the Emperor's Conviction, and when he refuses to give up, or when interrogating, or when commanding someone to do something, she speaks for him. As such, he uses this ghost a lot, and her strong but malicious voice has worn on most his servants.

The last is a very quite little boy in a brown burlap robe who keeps close to the Emperor if he can. He was a young Immaculate alter boy in a far flung Threshold temple, and the daily stresses of managing the conversion of barbarians drove the three monks who watched him to let out their tension with the loyal altar boy. He was abused badly, in ways clearly not approved of in the Immaculate Texts, until one monk began to try deeply sinful sexual experiments on the boy. Finding himself not stricken down instantly by his sin, the monk told his fellows, and convinced them, equally maddened by the Wyld, to try their hand at the poor boy that was taught to keep his mouth shut about what they did with him in the dark of night. He died in silence, choking to death on rather unpleasant juices. He speaks for the Emperor's Temperance and when he needs to put a leash on his excesses, even his other more violent Virtue-Children, or those of his deathknights, the silent lad speaks up with a wavering voice and a tear in his eye.

ue to his many-faceted nature, the Emperor, though disturbing, is considered a wise and enlightened Deathlord, and many Ghosts and Abyssals come to his court and Shadowland to emplore his advice, deliberated between his four portions of his mind and soul as represented through his children. Rarely do these internal arguments become violent, but the angry Valor and the oppressive Conviction have been known to throttle the others, or each other, if they violently disagree. When this gets out of hand, the Emperor breaks his stillness again, yanking violently on one of the chains to show which side he sides with. The children are independent entities who represent different lines of thought, different philosophies that the Ashen Emperor considers, and their external debate represent his inner deliberation over his differing opinions on any topic.

In the few recorded times his anger has brought him to slay someone personally, the children have, with but the simplest squinting of their Emperor’s eyes, moliated into mighty war-ghosts and shredded anyone within reach of their chains. None have survived the onslaught of the four monster-ghosts, but when the deed is done, and the children revert, the unwelcome sobbing of the Compassion-child and the Temperance-child, and the angry yelling and bullying of the other two fill the room with more noise then their victim ever had time to let out.

He has an utter revulsion towards physical contact with a woman. He has no doubt in the righteousness of his own cause. He appears to be pious and charismatic. He is but a man who wants what God promised him in their deal.

    medical horror

    - works best in a sci-fi or "ten minutes into the future" setting...

some doctor who made a lot of money on selling organs. turns out his 'lab techicians' (who on closer inspections mysteriously enough do not have the training required...) are actually used as living organ farms. the doctor cloned their organs inside them, but not all the organs came out right...

they all look normal on the outside - at least while clothed. they're covered in scars, and on the inside they're about as messed up as can be without them dying of it... although plenty have died, which was what led out heroes to investigate the doctor in the first place.

the doc has since 'retreated' to his private clinic/compound, guarded heavily under the guise of safeguarding his lucrative organ business - he has plenty of underworld contact since thats where a lot of his products go... if a mob boss has a bum lung, he goes to the doctor, which gives him a lot of protection.

I want to run a game with him as the bad guy now. Really one of the great villains of all time. Charismatic. Powerful. Utterly ruthless. Utterly insane. Utterly evil.

We have something kind of like that in DH. It's a Tzeentch demon who has a habit of being anyone and everyone that she feels like. It didn't get to real nightmare fuel until our psyker caught on to her psychic scent.

This is about the same time that we realized one of our friends, the voice on the radio who had been guiding us, was dead for the last day and a half. He'd been talking to us 4 hours ago.

So our psyker is trying to hunt her down as our first inquisitor shows up to save our asses, probably the 3rd or 4th time this has happened. We all revel in how awesome he is as he takes us back to the ship that's getting us back home. The psyker starts to freak out as she gets psychic impressions from the ship. The creature followed us up there.

And then it's all gone. The monster is no where nearby. She immediately questions how it came and left without any way to get on or off the ship. Then she remembers... the inquisitor just headed back to his own ship.

Sooner or later I think I'll be replacing one of them. And then the uncertainty and terror can really begin
