    They call it Jacob's Fire.

The we were losing the war against the tyrant-wizard Jacob Stoneheart. The rumor was that he had found a way to make himself utterly indestructible. His greatest servants, the Eidolons, could not die as long as their master lived. And so the Council of Sages created a magic that could unmake, unbind, and consume anything. They sent a small band of heroes to slay Black Jacob and save the world from domination.

It worked too well. The Basalt Citadel erupted in flame, the stone crumbling to gravel and ash, and even the ash burning. The fire spread. Unburied bodies, lying in the fields from months of war, finally received their cremation. Grass burned, and soil beneath that.

The army retreated from the growing blaze, marching from sunup to sundown to outdistance the inferno. They were joined by a second army; refugees, unfed and directionless, with no plan but to flee the devouring fire. Behind them, the horizon glows red, and black pillars of smoke stain the heavens.

Everywhere, the days grow dark as ash paints the sky gray. The sunsets are magnificent. In a year, the entire world will be burning.

Are you a bad enough dude to save the material plane?

Yeah, sure. A bottle of holy water will put out a portion of the fire a little smaller than a campfire. The doused material is still vulnerable to reignition.

Ordinary water actually burns, albeit slowly. It's mesmerizing to watch.

Alright, everybody out of the universe, come on now people, time's a wasting.

Nice, er, word-putting-together skills, but yeah, we need to know if there's actually any way to douse this fire, anything that it can't burn, etc. Maybe we could work out some kind of flying castle dealie, but that's kind of a hollow victory.

Glad you like it. I was just listening to a song, and it gave me an idea for a campaign where the world was in deadly serious, immediate and present danger, and saving it is up to the PCs.

Not that no one else is gonna give it a shot.

Imagine the young high priestess of Myria, Goddess of fertility, healing, and the life-giving waters. At the head of a column of ten thousand faithful, she marches toward the blaze. Anointed with holy water, her silk vestments clinging to her body, and joyfully leading the congregation in prayer, she marches into the flames. Miraculously, the fire parts and is forced away. Ash beneath their feet and certainty in their hearts, the flock marches forward, their hymns loud enough to drown out the roar of the inferno to their left and right.

The heat is drying the high priestess's robes. Soon, her skin is covered in ash, streaked with sweat.

The fire inches closer. The priestess prays louder, the hot air searing her lungs.

The congregation's singing falters, and takes on an edge of desperation. On the edge of the mob, someone is licked by fire, and screams.

Flame rushes in from all sides. In Myria's holy shrine, the Fountain of Life slows to a trickle and dies.

Problem is, the initial spell conjured enough fire to kill one BBEG. Now, a large portion of a continent is burning. Conjuring that much away is gonna take some doing.

The fire's not unstoppable. When the wind brings bits of flaming debris, people smother them quickly. You can put small fires out with water, the same way you can actually drown a fire in gasoline. Easier, really because water doesn't burn as fast as gasoline. Much of the problem is that the fire is already so large.

Can anyone think of a solution that's not as bad as the problem? Or is it time to evacuate to another plane?

I confess that I didn't have a win condition planned, but I'm not going to shoot things down unreasonably. I'm open to suggestion. If I ran this, the idea would be fore the players to come up with an ingenious way out of an apocalyptic situation... not to make them despair and burn. Although naturally there's gonna be a lot of rioting, looting, and suicide cults until the problem is addressed.

Either this god (or djinn) could decide to way overreact and humanity must now adapt to live in a world of scattered islands, he could be dismayed that even his water burns and OHSHI-, or he could be the new villain to be stopped, instead of the fire.

That'll work for a while... the fire isn't spreading downward as quickly as it's spreading outward, but it does burn soil and rock.

Year by year, you'd have to move deeper. Magma below, fire above, and all around, the underdark... ancient terrors routed from their lairs as the fire eats down, blind empires dealing with outsiders for the first time in centuries...

Even if the PCs don't manage to stop the fire, leading the evacuation (in whatever direction it goes) could be a hell of a campaign.

I'd probably start the game in media res. After Jacob Stoneheart went down and the fire began to spread, the armies gathered to oppose him scattered. The PCs are the leaders of one fragment of the army. Maybe they're officers, maybe they've just got personal reputations; regardless, the soldiers, and the refugees who have started following them, are looking to them for leadership.

The long-term game involves finding a home for these people, and then maybe stopping the fire and reclaiming the Ashlands.

Utilize prescribed burning and the massive amount of labour the armies afford to create swathes of safe black between natural barriers of mountain and water. Mandate frequent patrols downwind of the fire to find and extinguish spot fires.
    Then wait for rain.

This is assuming of course that this fire acts naturally. If it's magically fueled and can jump oceans and fuel lacking zones, well...

I'd personally build a large underground shelter (dare I say, vault?) and wait for the fire to pass.

Excellent if some of the PCs want to play warforged or evil characters. And I think a mix of good and evil PCs might actually work in this campaign, as long as everyone's willing to be mature. I say we run with Jacob Stoneheart being alive and wanting to stop the fire and save the world.

If his power is bound to the material world, which is slowly being consumed, then it's possible that he could survive and escape the initial inferno. However, he was unable to douse the fires surging across his body, now Jacob is a writhing in agony, levitating himself above the ground to prevent his fire from spreading further, his powers, and sanity, slowly ebb away and so to does his ability to keep himself alive.

The PC could encounter him by chance when they hear reports of small outbreaks of The Fire spreading ahead of the main front, I don't know what he could tell them or how he could help, but it would be awesome.

As for escaping the fire, I can think of two things:

Pick an island, and island, and gather another council of wizards, evacuate as many people as you could to it, and then levitate it above the all consuming flames. Short term solution because you'd eventually run out of food, though that would depend on the size of the island. Oh, and they'd have to stop it from falling apart.

2.Nuke the site form orbit, it's the only way to be sure. If the fire can be put out by cutting off its supply of air, blowing it out, or just smothering it then a large enough explosion might be able to stop it.

An epic-level anti-magic zone attached to a wizard who has flying abilities and a spell that makes him not need to breath. He soars above the fire, nullifying the magical properties in a wide area. Probably a cone-shaped AOE ahead of him would be best, so he doesn't have to be directly over the area to be extinguished.

On the ground, or perhaps travelling with him in the air, a bunch of clerics and druids conjure vast quantities of water and rain, dousing the nullified areas. Of course, those areas will be vulnerable to the magical fire when the wizard moves, but if the squad keeps moving, maybe they can beat the fire back bit by bit.

A few such squads, depending on the size of the fire, might be able to contain it and drive it back to its source.

Create a spherical bubble around the flames that leads to the Elemental Plane of Fire. The runes and such creating this effect would be located on the outside.

You then try to teleport the entire portion of the planet you've just englobed to somewhere else. If you have a moon, send it there and have a corresponding chunk of the moon replace it.

    Sounds romantic.
    "The moon's bright tonight, darling!"
"The moon's bright every night. It's on fire, remember?"

Too bad there's no air on the moon.
Maybe if you could just put a bubble around it 'till it exhausted all the air and put itself out... but maybe as soon as you free it again, the residual heat sparks it up and it's raging again. Also I'm not sure how you would get enough powerful wizards to band together to do it in the first place.
What about the areas where it's already been burning for some time? Assuming it expands in a ring, eventually the center will be all ash. You could just go to the far end of the earth, wait for it to reach you, then teleport back to the original center, where there's no more fire anymore.

Unless the ash burns or it's actually burning through the earth and the rock is igniting so the planet is gradually getting smaller. Those are kind of dumb though... maybe it's better to just wave your wand and have it that wherever the fire is burning, it never goes out.

This makes for a wonderful "hopeless but everyone's trying one thing or another" impending apocalypse campaign. Hordes of peasants, animals, and creatures would be fleeing, and the wealthy nobles or the mages with a degree of power would be fleeing to the kingdoms farthest from the source, where they have a little time to furiously research ways to stop the fire before it consumes the entire world.

The sea burning is a wonderful mental image. I wonder what happens to the mountains where oxygen is thinner? Maybe weak flames slowly creep up and kill anyone trying to hide up there.

This is a magical fire, so I think that what it's doing is actually converting everything in its path into more fire, not just burning things like a normal non-magical fire would.

The more common of them tend to just be regarded as your typical doomsayer, but there are a few of them who actively seek to harness the chaos of Jacob's Fire for themselves. They don't want to put out the fires, but they'd love to be able to control it and use it as a means to power.
