    Right, the goblins:
    The goblins are on good terms with the halflings, since they can go to the surface there to trade with them since the air is so moist.
    They sometimes get along, sometimes not with the gnolls and the elves. Different groups either trade with or raid them.
    The Gnolls are more interested in trading with the goblins and putting up with them out of the two, since they are very heavy into trade and commerce. However, because they live on large ocean vessals, they make a delicious target for goblin strike raids, using the vent pressure systems to appear form no where, strike, then disappear just as fast.
    The elves are more negative toward the goblins, since they rever the sea and see the goblins as a bit of a stain upon it. The goblins raid them at times, however it is more difficult to do so than with the gnolls, as the elves mostly live on tropical islands, making them stationary, making hit and run tactics harder, even though the gnolls are more well armed. The goblins mostly trade with the island elves and raid the ones that live on mobile waterworld like structures.
    The goblins would like to trade with the gnomes, howeve the gnomes are very secretive, so very little trade is actually done between them, making gnome bubble good an expensive goblin commodity.

    Finally, since the goblins are so aquatic, they don't do much trading with other races, instead doing it indirectly through halflings and gnolls if they require goods from races they do not trade with. This is especially true of the dwarves, since they live up in th sky, and the goblins live in the sea.
    The goblins highly value the goods from the hobgoblins, with their drugs and mind altering effects, important in their secrect dark cults and useful in drugging the lower castes into complaicency. However, to get them, they trade indirectly, trading through their allies, the halflings for what they require.
    I think that sums up their relations pretty well. If I am missing anything, feel free to fill it in.

    There's some options for handling the situation, if moon is decided to be inhabited. What I can think of is a) atmosphere extending all the way to the moon, b) artificial and narrowly travel-capable "wind tunnel" extending through space, stolen from Last Exile, and c) disqualification of Earth physics. Which, uh, actually, a) and b) both kinda fit into, along with everything else in the setting.

    Say. What actually should be the basic theme of the setting, anyway? Scientific, mythological as in "ancient hero did this and that, which causes sun to rise and fall now", or deific, as in everything goes by creation and will of the gods? Or something else altogether?

    The Halflings:
    The halflings are interesting. They are a bundle of opposites. On one hand they are jolly people, while on the others they are powerful necromancers. They are willing to do much trade, and yet are a very xenophobic people, keeping mostly to their own family lines to the extent of inbreeding. They also have no belief in souls, and no qualms about using their voodoo kajun necromancy to reanimate their people. This is actally quite commenplace, with a large amount of the population of halflings being reanimated in some manner or another. These are not considered slaves, nor are they. They are members of the Halfling community like any other halfling. In fact, it is common for the power heads of families to be liches, with the current most powerful one being a demilich and a pelvis (and a real ladies man). More to follow

    On the moon, I'd have to say that I really like the Moon/Demons Sun/Celestials duality, each ruled by a "god"-dragon, using Fey as shock troops against eachother.

    More important than anything else, it completely removes both from the equation. They are real, if you want to use it for something, but they are so removed from everything else that goes on on Teegeeia that it practically doesn't matter.

    Are the demons the grand design of the divine Orchitect? Is the sun really a god, as the dwarves teach? Do the two dragons remotely care about their kobold worshippers?

    These things are still open for debate, which is more important than influential moonfairies.

    I made a little checklist of events from real-world history that could be used to define some things of the setting. Answer as you fancy and then dicker 'til an understanding on what is useful and what is not is found, please.


    1: Separate culture spheres within races, yes/no?
    1b: Real-world/fictional base material for said cultures? Example: Sumerian orcs, Babylonian orcs, Hammerite orcs, completely homebrew orcs?

    2: The culture to produce the first, most widely used calendar system. Possibly particular scholar within group?
    2b: The current date on said calendar system.

    3: First surviving instance of written tradition, global and culture-specific? Contents, subject?

    4: The beginning date of transition from oral to written tradition: birth of codes of law and "reliable" historical records, transition from myth to antiquity? If, when, by whom?

    5: Surfacing of organized religions, when, where, by whom? Cross-race/culture spread, yes/no? Direct divine influence, yes/no?

    There's a ton of others to come up with, but I hesitate to spam too much in one go. It might be a bit much already. Have fun, hope it's of some use.

    The halflings do trade with a surprising amount of people.

    As previously meantioned, the trade extensively with the goblins. However, they also trade a great dea with the hobgoblins, their herbs and narcotics very valuable for trade and for their own use, whether recreational or in their dark voodoo rituals.

    Some of the braver halflings hunt trolls, since it is by their necromatic arts that troll flesh can be preserved for use, and is quite valuable. Useful in their constructs (and reanimated family members) for it's regenerative powers, the fat is usually traded to the gnolls, who then trade it to the gnomes.

    They also raise a special kind of alligator. This alligator is very, very tame, and is kept as pets, like we would a cat or dog. These gators shed their skins, which is used in products such as leathers, or used as a shell for reanimation into flesh golems, used as work horses in the living gator's sted.

    They also have their own narcotic mushrooms and poisons that grow in the swamp, traded to both the hobgoblins wishing to bolster their own considerable variety and to the goblins.

    As far as is currently known, the xenophobic halflings do not trade with other groups besides those meantioned most of the time, although there is always the odd occasion. They mostly get what they need through a cycle of trade from these main three. What they can not get, they reassure themselves they do not need. They are a willful people, proud of what their families can do.
    Despite the lack of trade, the gnolls trade with them when they can, since their necromatic treasures have many uses and are valued by many societies.

    1) Apart from tribe-by-tribe differences (tower-by-tower for orcs) I'd like to say "No". This makes sense in the real world, but in a fantasy setting, we end up with the pitfall of "Elvenhood". Sea elves. Wood elves. Forest elves. High elves. Low elves. Dark elves. Night elves. Sky elves. Sea elves. Water elves. Moon elves. Sun elves. Black elves. Earth Elves. Elf Elves.

    On the Orcs, though, I'd like to say Sumerian architecture, Babylonian culture.

    2) Different calendar systems for different peoples. Makes it possible to just ditch you in the setting and say "Hey, it's Year X". You can completely avoid continuity issues in some cases thanks to this - "But didn't Z do Y in X?" "No, that was a different calendar. He did that many years ago. When in uncertain. Calendar issues between races, you see".

    3) Humans. Definately humans. They were the dominant race before whatever Cataclysm befell them. Other than that, again, chalk it up to the different races. No shared alphabet, although I'd say that the current dominant one should be Orcish. It looks like a mix between Sanskrit and Runes.

    Yes, I'd say the orcs for the calender. Unless they all use a calender system of the older kingdoms, before humanity fell and such. Players would prolly go by the orc calender, unless they had a specific reason not to, in the compaign they are in. However, it is possible for them all to have their own basic way to keep track of time, and then the standard ancient human way. Like orcs tell time by their own calenders, but between the orcs and the humans if communication were had, they would use the ancient calender that they could both agree on.

    I'm not too familiar on Eberron, though. Basicly, faith drives divine magic. It was mentioned in the first thread, so there's really no need for real gods. The dwarves believe in an inanimate object, the Sun - but they also apply ONLY divine magic, despite this.

    There's a constant skirmishing going on and every year, during Tarrasquemas, a huge clash, offering the groundbound species and dorfs with a magnificent sight.

    Sometimes, a few half-melted, scorched pieces of armor or weapons reach the ground, usually only surviving if they hit sand or water.

    Here, I think I'll write my own bundle of suggestions. Take 'em as you want.

    1: Yes please. Inter-tower competition and differences out of plain spite.
    1b: Free-for-all. Using ancient and more obscure languages for naming templates for different culture groups could be useful, for example, but not direct carbon-copying of real-world cultures.

    2: The Orcish builder's almanac, reputedly an amalgamation of lore from the observations of early tower-builders on suitable times of towerbuilding. "Spring good for building, beware of storms in summer, heavy winds in autumn. Wear extra underwear for winter, don't let cement freeze."
    2b: That's a hard one. Drawing from the previous selection, depending on how old the first towers are.

    3: At least 2000 years old; either of orcish or dwarven descent. Fierce competition between the two groups exists of it's origin. Subject: the many competitions and exploits of great ancestral kings of both races.

    4: Hm... a little redundant, now that I think of it. At least 2-3k years ago. I would expect flying city cultures to require a fair bit of time to mature. Mythical or historical setting? I pick mythical, for the novelty and flexibility of it. Codes of laws: yes for orcs, gnomes. Dwarves might even have written constitutions. The rest, not so likely. Perhaps gnolls would have a viking-styled "thing" rulership system, something akin to proto-democracy on the deck of an ogring ship.

    5: Equal in age with written tradition. The more agressive the race, the more widespread and militaristic the religion. Orcish religions might be very widespread. Great big yes for Eberron-style religion and gods.

    We know gnolls have a system of ancestor worship. They take their dead and have them frozen solid, although I am not sure what they do with them then. Use them as statues to honor and look over them? Or perhaps some ritual shattering, in which the pieces are used somehow?

    The gnomes don't have an actual worship, I don't think. Rather, before they die, they add their own mind and personality to the vast collective bubble. This is similar to illithids and the elder brain, except good. In the bubble, their minds still exist and are alive, joined with the collective, still able to be connected to the unconcious connection and joined dream and such. I suppose this is what is sought for guidance and knowledge as well, as it possesses all the wisdom and guidance and experience of all who's mind reside within.

    Like at some point western science had a consensus that meteorites were just folklore and that no stones could ever fall from the sky.

    As for terrible dragons, we have two monsterously powerful dragons that pose as gods. I'm not sure we want more dragons than that.

    Do we? I'd prefer not to, really. Dragons overall are just boring. Either we make them intelligent, and then we have the problem of actually carving a place for them that makes sense (why aren't they interfering? If they are so powerful, why don't they, X, Y, Z). If we make them beasts or animals, then there's really nothing interesting about them anyway.

    If need be, can't we just go for "Winged lizards"? Huge, mean motherfuckers, but purely animalistic. Can only use their wings for great, enormouse leaps (several kilometers), not long-term flying.

    We could go with the real-world-history choice of people using "dragon" for a catch-all term for a big, mean monster, too.     Yeah, well, people are going to school and what not, I'm gonna dump some ideas here throughout the evening here though.

    I was thinking about names, and more specifically, what is the naming standard for the various cultures?

    Orcs - They want to sound classy, sophisticated and suave, but can't lose that raw animalism that they have ingrained in their very genes, giving them names that are easy to recognize.

    For example;

    "Thrallexander Fangstream"
    "Lok'Tharian Towerstrum"
    "Orchius Rawrifun"

    Seeing as they are not as clanbased as other cultures, family names are not as important as your vocation. You almost always have an additional name, to tell from which tower you are decended.     Dwarves, living in thin air needs all their oxygen for more important things, so their entire language is as short and direct as possible, names included. Two-maximum three syllables is often enough, and this sort of leads to the dwarf having lots more of different sounds for various letters and symbols than we do.

    For example,
    Lo'Bo is pronounced different from Lo-Bo, which is pronounced different from LoBo which is pronounced different from LoBó, etc.

    Naturally, family is marked in different ways, wearing a special type of braid in your beard, a marking on your fore-arm or something.

    For dwarves, I'd actually suggest uniforms. Not military uniforms, but simply distinguish people from the clothes they wear. I think it was said that their clothing is distinctly egyptian-like (but in darker colors, to match their architecture and culture, more stone/grey than gold/yellow). I think much of their hair would be concealed or braided into whatever fashion is going on, and they tend to burn themselves, making identification of social status or position based on tattoos/markings hard. Some priests are scarred all over their faces, I'd imagine.

    A khat (a headdress worn by the egyptian nobility/pharahos) should only be allowed to be worn by priests. The colors blue only by nobility. Things like that.

    Compare it to how Red Wizards of Thay are the only ones to be allowed to wear Red in Thay, in Forgotten Realms.

    I have two Swampland fauna:

    The Megasquid: With the extremely thick, moist air of the swamp, life has taken many an unexpected turn. This behemeth stands as tall as an elephant, with two long armlike tentacles instead of a trunk, and 8 more long squid legs, as thick as elephant legs. The moist air keeps it hydrated and is thick enough to support it's relatively soft body, with nearly pure muscle giving it the rest of the strength it needs to walk on land. It lacks the tusks of an elephant, but still possesses the powerful squid beak, said to be able to crush a golem in some of the tougher, older megasquid. It is an omnivore, focusing mostly on plant life, though it is not picky if the opportunity arises. Instead of ink, it's habitat and diet has led it to be able to shoot acid, thought to be a defence against the trolls that roam to far into the swamp, looking for an easy target. Some have been trained to be powerful beasts of burden, although the species is not domesticated. It is large and strong enough to grab a halfling in each tentacle and throw them both into it's gapping maw, swallowing them whole.

    Humans, still bitter over losing their imperium still rolls with archaic names, where you have long, dwindling names that mention parents, grandparents, great-grandparents etc.

    For example:

    "Frederick Andreas Elistor Fenderburg-Sturgisnaht, Son of Archduke Hemeldor of The Blazing Empire, Descendant of the Maximillian House" and something of the sort.

    Seeing as they are nomads, their name is the strongest link they have to their past, and they wear them with pride.

    The second is the Squibbon, lurking where the trees are close together and the air is moist. As the name might have tipped you off, it too is squidlike in appearance. But don't think it is any friend of the megasquid, which views squibbons as a rare treat. These squid creatures swing through the trees, like a monkey, but with more agility and skill, from it's lack of a skeleton and 8 arms. Their muscular bodies are powerful for their size, but they are relatively cowardly, not picking a fight with any creature larger than itself. It possesses five eyes, on various places on it's body, to better allow it to view the swampy jungle around it. Unlike the megesquid, if the squibbon were to encounter a troll, it would use it's agility, speed and grace to outrun and outlast it, outnumbering the trolls three arms by a whopping 5. Squibbons are delicious however, and not as acidicly sour as the megasquid. It's ink is said to possess important properties in the writing of magical scrolls, and is highly valued for it, worth the pain of catching one wild. There have been attempts to farm raise them, but they have all been varying degrees of unsuccessful. The best way to catch one is to take advantage of it's curious and playful nature; they are quite an intelligent creature, and at times naive.

And the reciever not only gets the looks, he gets the smell, the sound, everything perceptible about a person is easily transferred in a bubble.     More Fauna: The Splake, or Split-snake. The front have seems normal, if large for a snake, but it splits into two tails about a third of the way down. This allows the Splake, which is at least 12 feet long, to swim similar to a dolphin and even "stand" upright when it need to strike with it's mouth. It can even use the two tails to push itself up through the air, pouncing on unexpecting prey above in the trees, such as a squibbon. And when surprise is not enough to take down a foe, it uses it's two tails to increase it's constricting abilities, for a painful, crushing kill. We are only lucky that the Splake is not poisonous, as surprise and strength are quite enough for any animal.

    Darom Blocksetters Durp

    The remains of the only floating dwarven citadel to ever fall, due to the idiocy of the dwarven cleric, Darom Blocksetter.

    He who attempted to bargain with the winged elves for passage, only to have them strike down the peace party, and surge en masse reaching the control point and destroying the holy foci of the clouds which brought down the ship.

    The winged elf colony was destroyed in the following shockwave, collapsing their roosts high up in the Featherlite mountains. It serves as a reminder to all dwarves the lunacy of negotiating with lesser creatures.


    As well, have minotaurs live in cave systems built into the mountains, perhaps having an uneasy alliance with the winged elves, serving as infantry troops whilst they attack from above. Also at war with the dwarves because the dwarves keep eating their mountains.

    Halflings have quite a complex naming tradition, what with their godfather-controlled families. In official documents, the Godfather's name decides the last name of all the members of his Family. The first name is seldom used, as a nickname more often than not always surface a couple of years after they join the Family. Furthermore, what with the necromancing going around, a persons real name carries quite a lot of power as one needs to know it to cast various hexes on you. So the nick-name is as much "street-cred" as it is a protection from hexmasters and other magical evil-doers.

    Yeah, the hobgoblins could maybe have some distant common ancestor, and the naming tradition stuck. Also, the elves would perhaps use other things than just fish as totem-animals. (Or of they did, have more poetic names for them than just slapping the -fish-suffix on random words).

    I'm thinking the hobgoblins use what we would traditionally call "dwarven names", to signify strength and power. Every hobbo gets to choose their own name when they reach a certain age, and this is done under a heavy drug-trance. Names are not as important to signify family- or clan connections, face paints and tattoo's is used for that.

    Kenku live in caves near the top of mountains, fierce enemies with the dwarfs, allied with minotaurs who live in the base of their mountains for protection and when they go to war they have powerful infantry to support their aerial hit and run guerrilla tactics. Kenku and minotaur fucking hate dwarfs because the dwarfs keep destroying their homes by dropping their great citadel ships down and snipping off pieces of mountain for the ore and stone there in. (the mining practice is from the original thread)

    Minotaurs should live in quiet mining colonies. Never bothering other races taking the calm of the cow instead of the wrath of the bull. They produce metal ingots and gems which they trade with many other races. When provoked however they are fierce warriors. They have no spellcasters though. They worship neutral idols relating to their labyrinthine caves as opposed to named gods.

    Kenku worship the open air and freedom, as well as trickery and deceit. They excel at subterfuge, and are weak melee fighters but fairly talented archers and they have a limited number of wizard priests who serve to enthrall and goad the masses using illusion magics. They also live symbiotically with the minotaurs who provide them with tools and weapons whilst they serve as healers, diviners (of ore and the like), & early detection system for threats.

    Also, if they are to be different, perhaps not always have them be the top part bull only. The amount bull or man differs from individual to individual. Sometimes, on a rare occasion, one is born entirely bull or entirely man. In both these cases, the creature is of the same intelligence and suc as their parents, just lacking in one of the halves. If a full bull, it is given a place of honor and cared for. If it is a man, it is cast out of the tribe, or worse.

    Eh, until either myself or another can really make interesting kenku, lets just cut em out. The minotaurs as pacifists however could be interesting. They mine out the mountains below and trade with the surrounding races. They worship the mountain they live in, revering its spirit and believe each stone they cut has a spark of divinity or a soul in it. They're communion involves a great deal of meditation and they are powerful hand to hand fighters. Basically they aim to become sturdy as the rock they mine. Perhaps leaders of their religion/philosophy gain the ability to mine rock barehanded and deliver crushing blows to their enemies. In times of war they meet in a congregation where all minotaurs may cast a vote, as opposed to a single monarch. They elect a war leader (usually the highest ranking philosopher/warrior) to lead the warriors and a labyrinth leader (to organize the homes defenses and prepare the non-combat types)

    Hope war never comes but make sure every man woman and child can fight like a cornered dragon. kind of philosophy.

    Humans are few remember. Although they seem to cover much of the map, these are small numbers in each dot, barely more than a handful in most. They are just eching out however they can. As a result of them being so spread out, they tend, while still being very similar to each other, to be more varied in culture than other races, especially between those that live in the great endless desert, and those that dwell in the great endless plains.

    Kenku get regularly enslaved and abused by the dorfs. The dorfs, with their absolute love of flight see Kenku, birds that have LOST the ability to fly, as something of a perversion of nature.

    The least compassionate dorfs have fun droppin their slave Kenku off from great heights.

    The minotaur WERE slaves to humans, perhaps playing a part in their downfall, perhaps just freeing themselves as the human empire fell.

    Now the minotaur despise humans, slaying any they seem though luckily, they very rarely do, inhabiting such different parts of the world.

    Though despising humans, the minotaurs are fascinated by Ookluke, offering sacrifices on holy sites along the mountains, wishing to gain power and build a new empire of their own.

    The hardy minotaurs are readily hired by the gnolls and kenku, usually as warriors, sometimes as heavy workers of some capacity.

    Though unable to use magic, after hundreds of years being used as slave-troops under humanity, some minotaurs can sense the direction of powerful magic in a few mile radius.
    This works on them like a bad smell, aggravating them, though they can control themselves up to a point.

    Guy from original thread (Not OP, just that's the thread I was in.).

    I think there's a golden opportunity being missed here.

    First, 'dwarves' are sacred (to dwarves). No dwarves may be executed, killed, etc.

    If a dwarf commits a crime (murder, arson, sabotage, atheism), the dwarf is given a parachute and thrown from the city. A REAL dwarf would rather die with honor than live on the ground, so the killing is done by the executed itself.

    Because of this, many dwarves end up living out their days in shame on the ground. These 'outcasts', like all dwarves, enjoy flying, and find the ultimate profession to be a low-altitude airship captain, engineer, or sailor. Exiled from the great cities, they are forced to trade and coexist with other races, and their talents are valued highly.

    Exiled dwarves and non-exiled ones avoid eachother at all costs, as a confrontation might end up with combat, which neither side wants.

    Incidentally, I was the Anon with the Rakshasa Mages idea; I mainly meant it as an excuse for cities when the only ones were either Dwarven, flying, Orcish, towers, or Elven, flotillas. But I think it could still work; Rakshasas that construct/grow/adopt a city as their center of wizardly power, (Including a wizards tower at the center), and it's every wizard with a city and wizard's tower against every other wizard w/ city and Wizard tower. (I've read Sourcery recently, I like the idea of mages sending potshots at their rivals towers from half a continent away.

    I think of the Gnomes as lawful Neutral. They are all connected, however slightly, and thus are able to communicate and act better as a whole than the average race. Neutral because they honestly care not for the struggles of other races (although none of the races seem to either). Perhaps lawful good.

    Gnolls I see as true neutral, traders and sailors, living their lives on the seas, they have no true alliances, simply trading with all nations they are able to, gaining much strength in the process.

    Halflings... difficult, since they have so many contradicting ideas. I'd say chaotic neutral, with their care going mostly to their own family, and though an "organized" group, they still are rather mad to an outsider looking in.

    Hobgoblins would be neutral good, I'd think. They have too much order to be chaotic, but are not orderly enough to be truly lawful. They care for their people and their spirits dutifully.

    Humans would also be true neutral: it is hard to take a stand when you live in a vast desert, just barely making it by. Sure they have honor and strength, but survival of themselves and their people is important.

    Goblins would probably be chaotic evil. They do trade with other groups, such as the elves, gnolls and halflings, but they at the same time raid them (besides the halflings). They also have strange, secret dark cults.

    Humans and orcs have a very strained relationship. It is most natural, as the humans used to be the "dominant", if you will, race on in Teegeetia but due to the Second Cataclysm, they were cast down from their high pillars, and landed in the dirty sand. The orcs have now claimed much of the old human cities, as well as their civilization in general. This did happen many hundred years ago, but the few humans who are left refuse to acknowledge this as only natural, that all empires must fall. This rivalry is mostly amongst humans, as orcs couldn't care less about what a few ragtag groups of sand-people think.

    This makes the everyday life for a human nomad group quite complicated at times, especially when they are forced to do business with the orcs, trading tarr-poop (glass) for materials and food not found in the desert. However, nowadays it is mostly the older generations who still hold this grudge, the younger humans realize that they will die out, if they not seek aid with the orcs, who, considering all the other races, are most like us.

    Now, what this Second Cataclysm was, and for that matter the First, I shall have to think about.

    I like 'em all, though the original AoWII campaign PISSED ME OFF because I spent the fire levels leveling up my heroes into unstoppable badassess, and then had to start the water levels all over again.

    I liked the bit from the first thread about them being speed freaks; religious celebrations almost always include races, they breed horses that are the fastest in the world, a good horse is worth it's weight in gold. Having an affinity for air and fire, if you will, from the speeds they and winds they love and live in, and the blazing heat of the deserts they rule.

    Believe that if when they die, the soul is let free as a wind spirit, able to literally travel as fast as the wind. Use charms that, if they die with one, prevent them from being brought back with necromancy.

    I'd think both once and twice about bringing a gnome on such a venture. The gnomes are all connected through the hive-unconsciousness, and the longer a gnome stays away from the mother-bubble, as well as the bubble-cities, he becomes increasingly depressed. A link to his entire people slowly eradicating away, day by day.

    It would be some plot hook to drive this gnome out into the world.

    Don't forget, there are humans outside the desert. That is just their main land. The humans outside the desert don't get along with humans that remained in the desert, and vice-versa. We haven't quite set aside what the humans outside the desert are like though, although we know they do not have the tarrs. Perhaps they are similar to plains indians, following the herds.

    Hey, we've got to get our ancient Netherese dungeons and ruined cities SOMEWHERE. Anyway, 'smart orcs' feels like we're just switching it up for the sake of the switch.

    Orcs concentrate on castles, spires, and of course, stretching-into-the-heavans towers. (Likely magically reinforce, only built on the best of areas (Which are valuable enough that orks will wage wars for good bedrock foundations))

    Humans have ancient, weathered, decaying cities, rumored to be haunted, some infested with demons, with artifacts of the Ancient Empire (whatever it was) waiting to be claimed.

    (I'm vaguely imagining the Ancient Empire to have some sort of Roman-style Empire.

    Occasionally, sites still identifiable will be discovered, for instance, a certain section of the Great desert, rumored to be a battlefield outside a legendary lost city, where nothing grows. Even for a desert, no insects live in this area, no plants, no animal even ENTERS the area, and where corroded black remnants of armor and weapons can still be found among the sands.

    I feel we have yet to discuss one of the major factors in any new setting; Magic.

    We already have halfling necromancy, dwarven sun worship (where the power of belief grants them magical powers more than any actual god.) Furthermore, the hobgoblin shamans, as well as the elves practice a more primitive spirit worship, where "ghosts", or residual soul energy lingers on in our world, and a mind correctly attuned to them could harness their power and perform extraordinary feats. "Correctly attuned", in the hobbos case, high as fuck, and with the elves it is more of the constant exposure to the Sea of Spirits (their name for the oceans).

    However, this still implies that there is another dimension to the world, a dimension of energy, which is just beyond our grasp. Now, seeing as all the previously mentioned uses of magic never is tapped straight from the "Energy" but always use some sort of middle-man (necromancy is just a matter of never getting the energy to leave a body etc.), gives me the sense that penetrating the Energy-barrier straight up is a nigh impossible task for any mortal. Therefore I propose that direct mages, or wizards more or less doesn't exist at all. Sure, you could have people more or less in tune with the Energy, but no means exist that will enable them to fully use their potential without dying or something. Entire sections of Orcish (as well as ancient Human) universities have been devoted to Energy-studies, but none has found a solution...yet.

    How about instead of the legs being bull, they are normal human legs, and the torso, arms and head are bull. You may wonder how they manage to do battle without actual hands, just hooves. But that is because you forget that the minos are masters of unarmed combat. They need no metal gauntlets, their hooves are naturally harder than steel, with blows strong enough to send heads flying, should the time come. However, they are a naturally peaceful, meditative race, which is thought to be why they have been enslaved before.

    I still say that how much bull and how much man a minos is is randomly determined at both. They are born looking like the classical minotaur, but in their first few months of life, their body porportions shift around, until they come to their final shape. some minotaurs have cloven feet and horns. Others just have strong arms and hooves. The The shape their body takes and forms to decides their fate in life, which caste they are sent to.

    Minotaurs are generally slaves, used particularly for grunt work and menial labor, utilizing their incredible strength.

    Some, however, are free, and wander the land as mercenaries, laborers, or whatever.

    The human desert-tribes tend to get on well with minotaurs, as the tremendous strength of one lends it great ability in combat, something they can readily respect.

    I like it. Magic is used through ritual or natural skills or other such things, not so much through spells. For instance, Humans are the ones who can become sorcs, seen by their people as blessed by their religion, given the strength to shape the world. This isn't powerful like a normal sorc however, it is more raw from lack of training or finesse. Dorfs have a spiritual, more cleric-y magic, halflings are necromancers. Gnomes are psions. Goblins could be warlocks, making dark pacts in their shadowy cults for their powers. How is this sounding?

    Tarr are like mini tarrasques, however tarrasques are not violent in this world, but rock eaters. Tarrs eat sand in the vast deserts the main humans we discuss live in, and poop out molten glass. The finest molten glass around, useful for trading and making into various wares the humans need.

    I think they should be a caste society, one that is generally peaceful if they can be. They are the society where monks come from, meditative, able to shape the strength of their own bodies. The magic their people can gain is an extension of this, and the way their bodies are each different. Some of the minos are shapeshifters.

    I think I like the societal magic so far endorsed. ie. no FUCKING FIREBALLS UP YOUR ARSE wizards, but rather the shamans, druids and priests, with the jovial necromancers having it as part of their culture.

    So while this is a high-magic world, the magic is not concentrated enough to allow the usual antics.

    Maybe there are magicka of different kinds?
    The sun-magic for dorfs, warmth and light.
    The sea-magic for elves, maybe this is what makes the sea-ogres tallow so good?
    The air-magic for the orcs, to keep their towers from toppling.
    The earth-magic for the tarr, and at a lesser extent, for the humans.
    The life-magic of the halflings.

    And now I think that sounds a bit too much like MtG, but meh.

    I think the Rakshasas, if they are to be a part, should be the classic 'tome, spellbook, alchemy, etc' wizards, and, of note, the ancient human civilization were once the greatest wizards in the world (Anyone can become a wizard). Rakshasas are generally the most powerful wizards.

    This allows for anyone to get standard wizard-magic, if they can get their hands on a tome and the willpower/intelligence to use it.

    Possibility; Wizardry can either vastly improve your natural magical affinity (Humans would be air and/or fire, elves would be water/sea/ocean, dwarves, fire and understanding air (for aerodynamics, of course), orcs earth, etc, etc.), or allow you to gain skill in things outside your affinity?

    Yeah, that's kinda what I was going for. Different cultures have developed different ways to tap into the Energy. Humans are seemingly just born with an affinity to magic, without needing much in rituals and other stuff. They can't do very impressive things, but sand-bending, starting small fires is still very useful for a nomadic tribe. This fluke of genetics has caused some to speculate that humans of ancient times (before the Cataclysm) had indeed mastered the art of tapping into the Energy, and that the Energy somehow made an impression in their very blood, passing it along generation after generation. Not much of the Great Human Cities remain, and those few ruins that still stands, are reputadely haunted with spirits, and maybe even horrid Creatures of Energy that have slipped through some crack in the Barrier.

    And the gnomes collective unconsciousness is powerful enough to weaken the Barrier, granting them some very special abilities. (psion, that is)

    However, I am not sure about orcs.
